Processing of berries usually degrades anthocyanin and non-anthocyanin phenolics and diminishes antioxidant activity. In Colombia, jelly produced from the fruit of Vaccinium meridionale Swartz is a popular product among consumers. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of jelly processing steps on bioactive components. Analysis of anthocyanins (ACNs) and non-anthocyanin phenolics was performed via HPLC-PDA. Antioxidant activity was assessed by the ORACFL method. The pulping step had the highest impact on ACNs, whose total content was significantly higher in the pomace (747.6 ± 59.2 mg cyanidin 3-glucoside (cyn 3-glu)/100 g) than in the pulp (102.7 ± 8.3 mg cyn 3-glu/100 g). Similarly, pulping caused a significant decrease in flavonols, procyanidins (PACs) and ORACFL values. Despite the effects of processing, Colombian bilberry jelly can be considered a good source of phenolic compounds with high antioxidant activity. The final concentration of ACNs, hydroxycinnamic acids (HCAs) and flavonols, as well as the ORACFL values in this product were comparable to those of fresh cranberry (Vaccinium oxycoccos) and black currant (Ribes nigrum). The results also suggest that the pomace of V. meridionale can be recovered as an excellent source of bioactive compounds.

A scarce amount of knowledge about the use of Colombian berry (CB) in meat products is available in the literature. This work studies the impact of the addition of CB extracts (CBE) on pork patties at three different concentrations in the range 250-750 mg/kg. CBE were characterized in terms of their polyphenolic profile and antioxidant activity [1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging capacity, half maximal inhibitory antioxidant concentration (IC50), 2,2'-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS), ferric reducing antioxidant power assay (FRAP) and oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC) tests)]. After pork patties elaboration, instrumental and sensorial colour, as well as lipid oxidation measured as thiobarbituric acid reactive substances assay (TBARS) values, were evaluated for 10 days of refrigerated storage in a modified atmosphere (80% O2-20% CO2). The total anthocyanin composition represented 35% of the polyphenolic substances of the CBE, highlighting high contents in cyanidin derivatives. Additionally, other flavonoids (quercetin and kaempferol compounds) and phenolics acids, substances positively related to antioxidant activity, were identified and quantified. In addition, the incorporation of CBE resulted in improvements in colour and lipid stability of pork patties, especially for the highest concentration used. Our findings demonstrated that CBE could be added to pork patties without impairing their sensorial profile. Overall, our results indicate that the use of CBE as a source of natural antioxidant, natural colourant, or even as a functional ingredient could be promising, but more studies are necessary to confirm it.

Andean Berry (Vaccinium meridionale Sw.) is a South American fruit rich in phytochemicals with promising anti-cancer properties as co-adjuvants to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Aspirin. This study aimed to evaluate the antiproliferative potential of Andean Berry Juice (ABJ) in combination with Aspirin in human SW480 colon adenocarcinoma cells. ABJ primarily contained 3,4-dihydroxybenzoic and chlorogenic acids. The combined treatment of ABJ (IC50 : 30.0 ± 0.11%) and Aspirin (IC50 : 20.0 ± 0.57) exhibited a higher (p < .01) antiproliferative effect than each counterpart. Moreover the same mixture displayed a lower reduced glutathione/oxidized glutathione ratio (GSH/GSSG) than the untreated cells. ABJ-Aspirin combination induced late apoptosis stage without stimulating mitochondrial depolarization and prompted phosphatidylserine relocalization. These results emphasize the antiproliferative potential of bioactive compounds from ABJ and Aspirin combinations. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: Natural products such as Andean Berry (V. meridionale Sw.) juice (ABJ) contains antioxidant polyphenols that could reduce the need to use non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, currently employed in cancer treatment, to prevent its side effects. The high abundance of polyphenols from this underutilized berry could stimulate the standardization of its production and industrial exploitation to be transformed into suitable food products delivering natural bioactive compounds with potential anti-cancer effects in vitro.

V. meridionale Swartz is an underutilized Andean Berry that has been linked to several health benefits potentially derived from its anti-inflammatory effects. This research aimed to evaluate the impact of Andean Berry Juice (ABJ) combined with Aspirin in the modulation of anti-inflammatory markers from LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. The chemical characterization of ABJ showed a high content of polyphenols, mainly gallic acid (659-75 µg/g) and cyanidin chloride (418.61 µg/mL). Compared to LPS-stimulated macrophages, ABJ, Aspirin, and its combination reduced NO and ROS production (3.26-42.55 and 17.59-65.68%, respectively). In comparison, the half inhibitory concentration of NO reduction (IC50) was found at 7.69% v/v (ABJ) and 24.48 mM (Aspirin). Compared to the pro-inflammatory control (LPS), ABJ reduced IL-1ß, MCP-1, and GCSF; Aspirin decreased IL1R1, MCP-1, GMCSF, GCSF, and TNF-α; and the ABJ + Aspirin treatment reduced IL1R, GMCSF, and CXCL10. The in silico interaction of cytokines and the prediction of potential binding interactions suggested CCR1, CCR5, and NF-kB modulation. These results showed the anti-inflammatory potential of underutilized South American berries and their co-adjuvant effect with known drugs such as Aspirin in the resolution of inflammatory-derived conditions. This is the first report of the anti-inflammatory effects of V. meridionale Swartz juice in combination with Aspirin on LPS-challenged RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Berries of Vaccinium meridionale Swartz contain a variety of phytochemicals, which are believed to account for their bioactive properties. The potential of Vaccinium meridionale Swartz pomace as a source of bioactive compounds was investigated. The dietary fiber (DF) content was assessed by the AOAC method, phenolic compounds were characterized and quantified via HPLC-PDA and UPLC-QTOF-MS. The in vitro antibacterial activity was tested against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The antioxidant properties were assessed by the ORAC and the ABTS assays. The DF content was 52.4 ± 3.7%, phenolic compounds comprised anthocyanins (ACNs) (747.6 ± 167.5 mg cyanidin-3-glucoside/100 g FW), hydroxycinammic acids (HCAs) (229.2 ± 68.4 mg chlorogenic acid equivalents/100 g FW), flavonols (335.0 ± 139.5 rutin equivalents/100 g FW), and procyanidins (PACs) (140.9 ± 33.3 mg cocoa procyanidin equivalents/100 g FW). Staphylococcus aureus was more sensitive than E. coli. The ORAC value was 250.0 ± 32.0 µmol TE/g fresh weight (FW). Results suggest that the residue from V. meridionale S. can be utilized to obtain valuable nutraceuticals for the development of functional foods.

Background:Vaccinium meridionale produces fruits with a high content of anthocyanins and polyphenols with great antioxidant capacity. Objective: produce vinegar from V. meridionale alcoholic beverages and to determine the content of bioactive antioxidant compounds, antioxidant capacity, and cytotoxic activity on colorectal cancer cells. Methods: Wine and vinegar samples were obtained by fermentation of V. meridionale berries juice, using three extractive processes: mechanical maceration (MAC), preheating to 80°C (CAL) and a combination of both (MIX). During acetic fermentation, titratable acidity and acetic acid content were evaluated. Fermentation progress was recorded and compared by measuring the antioxidant potential by DPPH, FRAP, and ORAC. Polyphenols, anthocyanins and hydroxycinnamic acids were quantified. Finally, the antiproliferative activity of vinegar was evaluated in SW480 colon cancer cells. Results: In acetic fermentation, yield and productivity were independent of extraction, indicating that they do not affect the biotransformation of alcohol into vinegar. The alcoholic beverages showed the highest antioxidant activity; after acetic fermentation, a decrease in antioxidant potential was observed in all three extractive processes evaluated. The different vinegar obtained by CAL and MIX, showed the highest values of antioxidant activity, polyphenols, and anthocyanins. The inhibition of the antiproliferative activity of vinegar was dose-dependent and showed an IC50 of 536 µg/mL. Conclusions: The vinegar prepared from V. meridionale berries presented an outstanding antioxidant and antiproliferative activity. The reason is the contents of bioactive compounds and their antioxidant power, which may contribute to chemoprevention in secondary cancer prevention.


Antecedentes: Vaccinium meridionale produce frutos con alto contenido en antocianinas y polifenoles con elevada capacidad antioxidante. Objetivo: Producir vinagre a partir de bebidas alcohólicas de V. meridionale y determinar el contenido de compuestos bioactivos antioxidantes, capacidad antioxidante y actividad citotóxica sobre células de cáncer colorrectal. Métodos: Muestras de Vino y vinagre fueron obtenidas mediante fermentación del jugo de V. meridionale, usando tres procesos extractivos: maceración mecánica (MAC), precalentamiento a 80 °C (CAL) y una combinación de ambos (MIX). En la fermentación acética fueron evaluadas la acidez titulable y el contenido de ácido acético. Se registró y comparó la evolución de la fermentación midiendo el potencial antioxidante por DPPH, FRAP y ORAC. Se cuantificaron los polifenoles, antocianinas y ácidos hidroxicinámicos. Finalmente, la actividad antiproliferativa del vinagre fue evaluada en células de cáncer de colon SW480. Resultados: En la fermentación acética, el rendimiento y la productividad fueron independientes de la extracción indicando que no afectan la biotransformación del alcohol en vinagre. Las bebidas alcohólicas mostraron la mayor actividad antioxidante, después de la fermentación acética se observó una disminución del potencial antioxidante en los tres procesos extractivos evaluados. Los vinagres obtenidos por CAL y MIX, presentaron los mayores valores de actividad antioxidante, polifenoles y antocianinas. La inhibición de la actividad antiproliferativa del vinagre fue dosis dependiente y mostró un IC50 de 536 µg/mL. Conclusiones: El vinagre preparado a partir de bayas de V. meridionale presentó una excelente actividad antioxidante y antiproliferativa debido al contenido de compuestos bioactivos y poder antioxidante que puede contribuir a la quimioprevención en la prevención secundaria del cáncer.

RESUMEN El arándano (Vaeeinium meridonale) forma parte de la familia Ericaceae; es un fruto rico en compuestos polifenólicos como antocianinas y flavonoides con propiedades antioxidantes, compuestos que presentan algunas características para la inhibición de radicales libres. Se empleó un diseño factorial 23 para investigar los efectos de las variables temperatura, tiempo y el porcentaje de etanol en la extracción asistida por microondas (MAE) de los antioxidantes presentes en frutos de arándanos, como técnica alternativa, con la cual se pretende una economía destacable en cuanto al empleo de disolventes, tiempo y energía, en comparación con los procesos de extracción convencionales. Las extracciones se realizaron bajo las siguientes condiciones: temperatura (343,15 -383,15 K), tiempo (5-15 minutos), %EtOH (0-80%). Se planteó un diseño factorial, con un total de 8 experimentos para determinar la influencia de la relación de las variables en el proceso de extracción de compuestos con actividad antioxidante por el método de DPPH-, obteniendo un modelo factorial de primer orden con interacciones, bajo un nivel de confianza del 100% y R2=1. El diseño experimental y la evaluación de los resultados se realizó con el software R Studio® versión libre.


SUMMARY Blueberry (Vaccinium meridionale) forms part of the family Ericaceae; it is a fruit rich in flavonoids and anthocyanins (polyphenols), which have antioxidant properties and also shows some properties suitable for inhibition of free radicals. A 23 factorial design was performed to investigate the variables effects: temperature, time and the ethanol percentage %, on the antioxidants extraction process by Microwave Assisted Extraction (MAE). The extraction conditions were: temp (343.15-383.15 K), time (5-15 min), ethanol (0- 80%). A factorial design was performed, with a total of 8 experiments, allowing to determine the influence of the relation of the variables related to the extraction process of compounds with antioxidant activity by DPPH- method, getting a first order factorial model with interactions and a 100% reliability level and a R2 =1. The experimental design and evaluation of the results were performed with the software R Studio® free version.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is characterized by increased oxidative stress and a pro-inflammatory state. Vaccinium meridionale Swartz (known as "agraz") is a berry rich in polyphenolic compounds with demonstrated antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effects in preclinical studies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of agraz consumption on inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in women with MetS. Forty women with MetS (47 ± 9 years) were randomly assigned to consume daily either 200 mL of agraz nectar or placebo over four weeks in a double-blind, cross-over design study, separated by a 4-week washout period. Metabolic and inflammatory markers in serum and antioxidant/oxidative stress markers in serum and urine were assessed at the end of each period. Serum antioxidant capacity measured by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) method was significantly higher (p = 0.028), while urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) was lower (p = 0.041) after agraz consumption, compared to placebo. In conclusion, consumption of agraz during four weeks increased serum antioxidant capacity and decreased a marker of DNA oxidative damage in women with MetS, compared to placebo. These results suggest that agraz consumption may play a protective role in patients with MetS.

Berry consumption is associated with colorectal-cancer chemoprevention, but digestive conditions can affect this property. The bioaccessibility and apparent permeability coefficients of bioactive compounds from Andean Berry Juice (ABJ) after in vitro gastrointestinal digestion and colonic fermentation were analyzed. The antiproliferative effect of the fermented nondigestible fraction was evaluated against SW480 colon-adenocarcinoma cells. Gallic acid displayed the highest bioaccessibility in the mouth, stomach, small intestine, and colon. However, chlorogenic acid exhibited the highest apparent permeability coefficients (up to 1.98 × 10-4 cm/s). The colonic-fermentation fraction showed an increase of ≥50% antiproliferative activity against SW480 cells (19.32%, v/v), equivalent to those of gallic acid (13.04 µg/g), chlorogenic acid (7.07 µg/g), caffeic acid (0.40 µg/g), ellagic acid (7.32 µg/g), rutin (6.50 µg/g), raffinose (0.14 mg/g), stachyose (0.70 mg/g), and xylose (9.41 mg/g). Bioactive compounds from ABJ are bioaccessible through the gastrointestinal tract and colon fermentation, resulting in antiproliferative activity.

Background: Andean berry (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz) is a native Colombian berry with potential health benefit comparable to cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon), both rich in phenolic compounds with a wide range of biological activities. Objectives: to evaluate the effect of Andean berry consumption on blood biochemical parameters (lipid profile and glucose), anthropometric parameters (body weight, waist circumference, body mass index or BMI) and blood pressure of overweight adults. Methods: glycemia, total cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and total triglycerides in blood serum, body weight, size and waist perimeter, and blood pressure were analyzed in 25 overweight adults at day 1 and 21 after consumption of 35 g/day of osmodehydrated Andean berry. Results: a significant reduction in diastolic blood pressure (10%, p = 0.0388), systolic blood pressure (6%, p = 0.0400), BMI (1.7%, p = 0.0306), weight (2%, p = 0.0388) and waist circumference (4.1%, p = 0.0052) were observed in the participants who completed the study. However, the lipid profile did not have a significant effect, the glycemia increased significantly (6.9%, p = 0.0004). Conclusions: the results of the present study suggest that the regular consumption of Andean berry treated by osmotic dehydration is a food that may help control weight and blood pressure; however, it requires another type of osmotic agent to prevent the increase of glycemia.


Antecedentes: Agraz (Vaccinium meridionale Swartz) es una baya nativa colombiana con potencial beneficio en la salud comparable al arándano (Vaccinium macrocarpon), ambas ricas en compuestos fenólicos con amplio rango de actividades biológicas. Objetivo: evaluar el efecto del consumo de agraz osmodeshidratado en parámetros bioquímicos sanguíneos (perfil lipídico y glucemia), antropométricos, (perímetro de cintura, índice de masa corporal o IMC) y presión arterial en adultos con sobrepeso Métodos: se analizaron los parámetros glucosa, colesterol total, colesterol-LD, colesterol-HDL, triglicéridos totales en suero, peso, talla y perímetro de cintura, y presión arterial de adultos con sobrepeso al inicio y 21 días después de consumir 35g de agraz osmodeshidratado/día. Resultados: se observó en los participantes que completaron el estudio una reducción significativa en la presión arterial diastólica (10%, p = 0,0388) y sistólica (6%, p = 0,0400), así como en el índice de masa corporal (1,7%, p = 0,0306), peso (2%, p = 0,0388) y perímetro de cintura (4,1%, p = 0,0052). Sin embargo, en el perfil lipídico no tuvo efecto significativo, aunque si aumentó significativamente el valor de la glicemia (6,9%, p = 0,0004). Conclusión: los resultados del presente estudio sugieren que el consumo regular de agraz tratado por deshidratación osmótica es un alimento que ayuda al control del peso y presión arterial, sin embargo requiere otro tipo de agente osmótico para evitar el aumento de la glicemia.

En este trabajo se muestra el desarrollo y la validación de un método analítico para la cuantificación de polifenoles totales con el reactivo de Folin-Ciocalteu (F-C),en procesos de extracción asistida por microondas (MAE), sobre frutos de la especie colombiana Vaccinium meridionale. Los resultados obtenidos en los parámetros selectividad, linealidad, repetibilidad y exactitud muestran que la metodología propuesta es confiable para evaluar el efecto de las condiciones de extracción sobre la cantidad de polifenoles removidos.


In this work, we show the development and validation of an analytical method for quantification of total polyphenols with Folin-Ciocalteu reagent (F-C) in microwave-assisted extraction processes for Colombian species Vaccinium meridionale. Experimental results of selectivity, linearity, repeatability and accuracy evidence that the methodology proposed is reliable to evaluate the effect of the extraction conditions over the quantity of polyphenols removed.

Vaccinium meridionale es una planta silvestre productora de frutos comestibles en las áreas montañosas del norte de Suramérica. Sin embargo, no hay información suficiente sobre su sistema reproductivo, lo cual es fundamental para su manejo y conservación dado que sus frutos son extraídos de forma no sostenible y hay un creciente interés en establecer la especie como cultivo. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron estudiar la biología floral y reproductiva de V. meridionale en condiciones naturales y analizar la importancia de los polinizadores en su reproducción. Para esto se realizaron observaciones y experimentos para describir su morfología y fenología floral, viabilidad de polen, receptividad de estigma, relación polen óvulo y producción de néctar. Para estudiar su sistema reproductivo se realizaron experimentos de emasculación, exclusión de polinizadores y polinización manual (autopolinización y polinización cruzada). El estudio se realizó con dos poblaciones silvestres de V. meridionale ubicadas en los departamentos de Cundinamarca y Boyacá, en la Cordillera Oriental de Colombia. Se encontró que aunque las flores tienen anteras poricidas la liberación del polen se da fácilmente sin vibración. V. meridionale presenta un gran despliegue y larga longevidad floral y hay un sesgo en la producción de néctar hacia la función femenina. Se estimó una relación polen/óvulo de 571±133, lo que clasifica a la especie como xenógama facultativa. Este resultado coincidió con los experimentos de polinización ya que en las dos poblaciones estudiadas las plantas produjeron frutos por agamospermia, autogamia y xenogamia. No obstante, se observó una fuerte depresión por endogamia manifestada en altas tasas de aborto de frutos producidos por autogamia a diferencia de los frutos provenientes de polinización cruzada que fueron retenidos por la planta desde su formación. Los rasgos florales presentados por la especie se consideran mecanismos para favorecer un gremio más diverso de visitantes florales que sólo los insectos capaces de polinización por vibración. Además, estos rasgos florales pueden aumentar la probabilidad de polinización y disminuir la geitonogamia. Igualmente la depresión por endogamia sugiere que la especie busca mantener el entrecruzamiento como su principal estrategia reproductiva. Por lo tanto, los polinizadores, en particular las abejas son fundamentales para la reproducción de V. meridionale y en consecuencia su conservación es esencial para mantener la variabilidad genética y oferta de frutos de esta especie.


Vaccinium meridionale is a wild plant producing edible fruits in the mountain areas of Northern South America. However, the fruits of this species has been under an unsustainable extraction and there is a growing interest of establishing this species as a crop; nevertheless, the information about its breeding system is scarce, which is essential for its sustainable management and conservation. This research aimed to study the floral and reproductive biology of V. meridionale in natural conditions, and to analyze the importance of pollinators on its reproduction, in two wild populations of V. meridionale in the states of Cundinamarca and Boyacá, in the Oriental Cordillera of Colombia. For this, we have made different observations and experiments to describe its flower morphology, floral phenology, pollen viability, stigma receptivity, pollen-ovule ratio and nectar production. To study its reproductive system, we performed experiments of flower emasculation, pollinator exclusion and hand pollination (self-and cross-pollination). We found that although the flowers have poricidal anthers, the release of pollen could occur easily without vibration. V. meridionale shows a large floral display, long floral longevity and has female-biased nectar production. The pollen-ovule ratio was of 571±133, which classified the species as facultative xenogamy. This result agreed with the pollination experiments because the plants produced fruits by agamospermy, selfing and outcrossing. However, we registered a strong inbreeding depression, observed in high rates of fruit abortions, after self-pollination. Unlike of self-pollinating fruits, the plant retains those produced by cross-pollination since its formation. The floral traits showed by this species are mechanisms to favor a more diverse guild of floral visitors than only insects able to buzz-pollination. In addition, these floral traits may enhance the pollination probability, and reduce geitonogamy. Moreover, the inbreeding depression suggests that V. meridionale promotes outcrossing as its main reproductive strategy. Therefore, pollinators, particularly bees, are essential for this species reproduction and conservation, and are critical in the maintenance of its genetic variability and fruits production.

Introduction: Vaccinium meridionale Swartz, of the family Ericaceae, is commonly known as mortiño or agraz. The plant is considered a functional food, with a content of anthocyanins and antioxidants similar to or greater than that reported for other Vaccinium species. However, little is known about its nutraceutical and medicinal properties. Objectives: determine the antioxidant activity and cytotoxic and antiproliferative effect of mortiño fruit aqueous extract against colon adenocarcinoma cells (SW480) and their derived metastatic cells (SW620). Methods: total phenols and anthocyanins were determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu method. Caffeoyl derivatives were determined by HPLC-DAD. Antioxidant activity was analyzed as the ability to scavenge reactive oxygen species (ROS), reactive nitrogen species (RNI), peroxyl radicals and hydroxyl radicals. Cytotoxic and antiproliferative activities were studied by MTT and sulforhodamine B. Results: the following substances were found in 100 g of lyophilized extract: total phenols (2 546 mg GAE), anthocyanins (150.7 mg C3G), chlorogenic acid (126 mg), ferulic acid (108 mg) and coumaric acid (63 mg). Hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity was 36 147.5 ?mol DMSO, whereas ROS and RNS scavenging capacity was 29 255.9 y 41 775.2 ?molTrolox, respectively. ORAC value was 41 775.2 ?molTrolox. A dose-dependent cytotoxic and antiproliferative effect was observed. IC50 value was 59.12 µg/ml for SW480 and 56.10 µg/mL for SW620. Conclusions: mortiño fruit aqueous extract exhibited antioxidant, cytotoxic and antiproliferative activities comparable to those of other berries of the genus Vaccinium, which could be partly explained by the presence of a high content of anthocyanins and phenolic acids.

Considerado un alimento funcional por su contenido de antocianinas y antioxidantes similares o mayor al reportado para otras especies de Vaccinium. Sin embargo, poco se conoce sobre sus propiedades nutracéuticas y en la salud. Objetivos: determinar en extracto acuoso del fruto mortiño, la actividad antioxidante y su efecto citotóxico y antiproliferativo en células de adenocarcinoma de colon (SW480) y sus derivadas metastásicas (SW620). Métodos: contenido de fenoles y antocianinas totales se determinó por el método Folin-Ciocalteu, los derivados caffeoil por HPLC-DAD. La actividad antioxidante se analizó como habilidad para atrapar especies reactivas del oxígeno (ROS) y del nitrógeno (RNI), radicales peróxilo e hidróxilo. La actividad citotóxica y antiproliferativa se estudiaron por MTT y sulforodamina B. Resultados : en 100 g de liofilizado se encontrófenoles totales (2546 mg GAE), antocianinas (150,7 mg C3G), ácido clorogénico (126 mg), ácido ferúlico (108 mg) y cumárico (63 mg), capacidad atrapadora de radical hidroxilo fue 36147,5 ?mol DMSO, capacidad atrapadorade ROS y RNS fue 29255,9 y 41775,2 ?mol Trolox, respectivamente, valor ORAC 41775,2 ?mol Trolox. Se observó un efecto citotóxico y antiproliferativo dosis-dependiente. El valor IC50 para SW480: 59,12 µg/mL y SW620: 56,10 µg/mL. Conclusiones: el extracto acuoso del fruto del mortiño exhibió actividades antioxidantes, citotóxicas y antiproliferativas comparables a las de otras bayas del género Vaccinium, lo que podría ser explicado parcialmente por la presencia del alto contenido de antocianinas y ácidos fenólicos.

Vaccinium meridionale is a promising crop for the Andean region of South America and is currently available only in the wild. Spontaneous populations of this plant are found across the Colombian mountains, but very few published records on this plant morphology are available. A zonification study of V. meridionale was conducted in four principal areas of a low mountain forest of Colombia (Provinces of Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Santander and Nariño) in 2007. A total of 20 populations and 100 plants of V. meridionale were individually characterized and surveyed, using a list of 26 characters of morphological variables (9 quantitative and 17 qualitative characters). Our results indicated that natural populations of V. meridionale might be found in the tropical forest under a highly heterogeneous climate and microclimate conditions, at different mountain regions between 2 357 and 3 168masl. The shrubs of V. meridionale exhibited a high level of intra-population variation in several quantitative (plant height, stem diameter) and qualitative (growth habit, ramification density, presence of anthocyanins in stems) morphological characters, suggesting an environmentally induced phenotypic plasticity. Plant height, stem diameter and foliar density were the most variable morphological traits, with coefficients of variation higher than 50%. However, several quantitative characters of its reproductive potential, such as berry dimensions, rachis length and number of flowers per inflorescence, resulted with low plasticity with coefficients of variation lower than 30.2%, indicating that these characters were genetically determined. The highest correlation coefficients (p<0.05) resulted to be between fruit length and fruit width (0.90), leaf length and leaf width (0.78), plant height and stem diameter (0.60), and inflorescence length and flowers number per inflorescence (0.57). The results suggest that an important genetic resource exists for this species in the wild. Low variation in fruit size, which constitutes a target trait for plant breeders, could be useful for selection of cultivars of V. meridionale. Vaccinium meridionale es una planta promisoria para la región Andina de Sudamérica y está disponible actualmente sólo en forma silvestre. Las poblaciones espontáneas de esta planta se encuentran en las montañas colombianas y existen muy pocos reportes publicados respecto a su morfología. Se realizó un estudio de zonificación de V. meridionale en cuatro áreas principales de un bosque de baja montaña de Colombia (Provincias de Boyacá, Cundinamarca, Santander y Nariño) en 2007. Un total de 20 poblaciones y 100 plantas de V. meridionale fueron individualmente caracterizadas usando una lista de 26 descriptores de variables morfológicas (9 caracteres cuantitativos y 17 caracteres cualitativos). Nuestros resultados indicaron que las poblaciones naturales de V. meridionale podrían ser encontradas en el bosque tropical bajo unas condiciones de clima y microclima muy heterogéneas, en regiones de montaña diferentes entre 2 357 y 3 168masl. Los arbustos de V. meridionale presentaron un nivel alto de la variación intrapoblacional en varios caracteres morfológicos cuantitativos (altura de planta, diámetro de tallo) y cualitativos (hábito de crecimiento, densidad de ramificación, presencia de antocianinas en tallos), sugiriendo una plasticidad fenotípica ambientalmente inducida. La altura de planta, el diámetro de tallo y la densidad foliar fueron los rasgos morfológicos más variables, con coeficientes de variación superior al 50%. Sin embargo, varios caracteres cuantitativos de su potencial reproductivo, como dimensiones de baya, longitud de raquis y número de flores por inflorescencia, presentaron plasticidad baja con coeficientes de la variación inferior al 30.2%, indicando que estos caracteres fueron genéticamente determinados. Los coeficientes de correlación más altos (p<0.05) fueron para longitud de fruto y ancho de fruto (0.90), longitud de hoja y ancho de hoja (0.78), altura de planta y diámetro de tallo (0.60), y longitud de inflorescencia y número de flores por inflorescencia (0.57). Los resultados sugieren que en condiciones naturales existe un recurso genético importante para esta especie. La poca variación en el tamaño de fruto, puede ser útil para la selección de cultivares de V. meridionale y se constituye un rasgo objetivo para fitomejoradores. Los resultados de este estudio también pueden ser aplicados en programas de conservación para proteger estas poblaciones diversas en los bosques de montaña de Colombia.
