RESUMO

Objetivo: probar la versión adaptada al español de la Escala de Bienestar Psicológico de Ryff en población argentina y analizar su consistencia interna y evidencias de validez basadas en la estructura interna y en la relación con otras variables. Método: se trabajó con dos grupos de participantes: uno de 3228 adultos argentinos (población general), con edades comprendidas entre los 20-83 años (M= 42.21; DE= 13.17). 81.9 % de género femenino. El otro grupo, de 153 estudiantes universitarios, edades entre 18-57 años (M= 26.71; DE =7.53), 85 % de género femenino. Resultados: A través de un análisis factorial confirmatorio pudo observarse un buen ajuste del modelo de Ryff, con cargas factoriales apropiadas. La confiabilidad se analizó mediante fiabilidad compuesta. Los resultados indicaron una buena confiabilidad para todas las dimensiones. Se analizaron las correlaciones con variables teóricamente relacionadas: ansiedad, depresión y personalidad. Se observaron correlaciones estadísticamente significativas en las variables bajo análisis, en el sentido esperado. Conclusión: esta versión del instrumento mostró un ajuste muy bueno, buena confiabilidad y asociaciones descriptas previamente de las dimensiones con variables de ansiedad, depresión y personalidad. Se considera que esta versión es adecuada para ser utilizada en población argentina como herramienta para el estudio del bienestar psicológico desde el enfoque eudaimónico, tanto en el ámbito de la investigación como la clínica.

Conclusão: Esta versão do instrumento demonstrou um ajuste muito bom, boa confiabilidade e associações previamente descritas das dimensões com variáveis de ansiedade, depressão e personalidade. Esta versão é considerada adequada para uso na população argentina como ferramenta para o estudo do bem-estar psicológico a partir de uma perspectiva eudemônica, tanto em pesquisas quanto em contextos clínicos.


Aim: To test the Spanish-adapted version of Ryff's Psychological Well-Being Scale in Argentine population and analyze its internal consistency, validity evidence based on internal structure, and its relationship with other variables. Method: Two groups of participants were studied: one consisting of 3228 Argentine adults (general population) aged 20-83 years (M = 42.21; SD = 13.17), 81.9 % female, and another group of 153 university students aged 18-57 years (M = 26.71; SD = 7.53), 85 % female. Results: A confirmatory factor analysis revealed a good fit for Ryff's model, with appropriate factor loadings. Reliability was assessed using composite reliability, with results indicating good reliability across all dimensions. Correlations were analyzed with theoretically related variables, including anxiety, depression, and personality, revealing statistically significant correlations in the expected direction. Conclusion: This version of the instrument demonstrated a very good fit, good reliability, and previously described associations of the dimensions with variables such as anxiety, depression, and personality. This version is considered suitable for use in the Argentine population as a tool for studying psychological well-being from a eudaimonic perspective, both in research and clinical settings.

To reduce influenza-associated morbidity and mortality, countries in South America recommend annual influenza vaccination for persons at high risk for severe influenza illness, including young children, persons with preexisting health conditions, and older adults. Interim estimates of influenza vaccine effectiveness (VE) from Southern Hemisphere countries can provide early information about the protective effects of vaccination and help guide Northern Hemisphere countries in advance of their season. Using data from a multicountry network, investigators estimated interim VE against influenza-associated severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) hospitalization using a test-negative case-control design. During March 13-July 19, 2024, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay identified 11,751 influenza-associated SARI cases; on average, 21.3% of patients were vaccinated against influenza, and the adjusted VE against hospitalization was 34.5%. The adjusted VE against the predominating subtype A(H3N2) was 36.5% and against A(H1N1)pdm09 was 37.1%. These interim VE estimates suggest that although the proportion of hospitalized patients who were vaccinated was modest, vaccination with the Southern Hemisphere influenza vaccine significantly lowered the risk for hospitalization. Northern Hemisphere countries should, therefore, anticipate the need for robust influenza vaccination campaigns and early antiviral treatment to achieve optimal protection against influenza-associated complications.

The treatment of carbendazim-contaminated effluents is a challenge because of its complex composition and toxicity. A promising solution lies in biodegradation and the fungus Actinomucor elegans LBM 290 shows significant potential in this regard. Thus, the aim of this study was to biodegrade MBC by A. elegans LBM 290 in a liquid medium addressing the changes in the fungal morphology and protein production. The fungus A. elegans LBM 290 efficiently remove the fungicide carbendazim, with 86.6% removal within 8 days. This degradation is a combination of biodegradation (24.54%) and adsorption (62.08%). Exposure to carbendazim negatively affected the fungus, causing a decrease in biomass and morphological changes. Proteomic analysis revealed the fungal response to carbendazim stress through increased production of Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase, an antioxidant enzyme that combats oxidative stress, and the presence of a G protein subunit, suggesting participation in stress signaling pathways. These findings contribute to understanding the strategies of A. elegans LBM 290 to cope with carbendazim exposure in aquatic environments.

El ameloblastoma multiquístico, una neoplasia odontogénica de crecimiento lento, pero comportamiento agresivo, suele manifestarse en la mandíbula, generando deformidades faciales, pérdida dentaria y desplazamiento de tejidos adyacentes. Este estudio tiene como objetivo describir el tratamiento quirúrgico multidisciplinario del ameloblastoma multiquístico en una localización inusual, destacando el compromiso de estructuras vitales y los estudios complementarios necesarios para un diagnóstico preciso. Se presenta el caso de un paciente masculino con una lesión en la hemicara izquierda, que se había desarrollado durante aproximadamente ocho meses, abarcando desde la región temporoparietal hasta la región maseterina ipsilateral. La evaluación clínica y radiológica inicial sugirió la posibilidad de un ameloblastoma multiquístico, confirmado posteriormente mediante biopsia. Como parte del equipo multidisciplinario del Hospital San Vicente Fundación de Medellín, se optó por una resección quirúrgica radical, que incluyó hemi-craneotomía y hemi-mandibulectomía, seguida de una reconstrucción exitosa. Se señala la importancia de un abordaje coordinado entre cirujanos maxilofaciales, estomatólogos y otros especialistas, así como la relevancia de los estudios complementarios para determinar el curso terapéutico óptimo. La cirugía reconstructiva demostró ser efectiva tanto en la restauración funcional como estética, aunque destaca los desafíos inherentes a la gestión de localizaciones poco comunes de esta enfermedad.


Multicystic ameloblastoma, a slow-growing but aggressive odontogenic neoplasm, usually manifests in the mandible, causing facial deformities, tooth loss and displacement of adjacent tissues. This study aims to describe the multidisciplinary surgical management of multicystic ameloblastoma in an unusual location, highlighting the involvement of vital structures and the complementary studies necessary for an accurate diagnosis. We present the case of a male patient with a lesion in the left hemiface, which had developed over approximately eight months, spanning from the temporoparietal region to the ipsilateral maseterine region. Initial clinical and radiological evaluation suggested the possibility of multicystic ameloblastoma, subsequently confirmed by biopsy. As part of the multidisciplinary team of the Hospital San Vicente Fundación de Medellín, a radical surgical resection was chosen, including hemi-craniotomy and hemi-mandibulectomy, followed by successful reconstruction. The importance of a coordinated approach between maxillofacial surgeons, stomatologists and other specialists is emphasized, as well as the relevance of complementary studies to determine the optimal therapeutic course. Reconstructive surgery proved to be effective in both functional and cosmetic restoration, although it highlights the challenges inherent in managing rare locations of this disease.

Do all birds' sex chromosomes follow the same canonical one-way direction of evolution? We combined cytogenetic and genomic approaches to analyze the process of the W chromosomal differentiation in two selected Passeriform species, named the Pale-breasted Thrush Turdus leucomelas and the Rufous-bellied thrush T. rufiventris. We characterized the full catalog of satellite DNAs (satellitome) of T. leucomelas, and the 10 TleSatDNA classes obtained together with 16 microsatellite motifs were in situ mapped in both species. Additionally, using Comparative Genomic Hybridization (CGH) assays, we investigated their intragenomic variations. The W chromosomes of both species did not accumulate higher amounts of both heterochromatin and repetitive sequences. However, while T. leucomelas showed a heterochromatin-poor W chromosome with a very complex evolutionary history, T. rufiventris showed a small and partially heterochromatic W chromosome that represents a differentiated version of its original autosomal complement (Z chromosome). The combined approach of CGH and sequential satDNA mapping suggest the occurrence of a former W-autosomal translocation event in T. leucomelas, which had an impact on the W chromosome in terms of sequence gains and losses. At the same time, an autosome, which is present in both males and females in a polymorphic state, lost sequences and integrated previously W-specific ones. This putative W-autosomal translocation, however, did not result in the emergence of a multiple-sex chromosome system. Instead, the generation of a neo-W chromosome suggests an unexpected evolutionary trajectory that deviates from the standard canonical model of sex chromosome evolution.

Phlebotomine sand flies are insects of notorious importance in public health, mainly due to their involvement in the transmission of Leishmania protozoa. Their flight activity occurs predominantly in the twilight/night period, being stimulated mainly by the need to search for food and reproduction. Despite being naturally wild, some species are able to invade anthropized environments. Present work aimed to assess the nocturnal activity and forestry-urban dispersal of phlebotomine sand flies from an ecotourism park in Belém, Amazonian Brazil. The study area comprised a horizontal transect, extending from a forest park to the neighboring urban environment, in Belém. Sampling was conducted with night-operating light traps. Nocturnal activity was assessed through time-set captures with a collection bottle rotator in the forest environment. Dispersal was assessed through captures carried out along the transect, starting from the forest edge (0 m), extending to the urban environment (50-200 m), phlebotomine sand flies were identified. Abundance, richness, diversity, and sampling sufficiency were estimated. Fourteen species were recorded in the surveyed environments, with Nyssomyia antunesi, Trichophoromyia brachipyga, and Trichophoromyia ubiquitalis being the most abundant. Nocturnal activity behavior of Ny. antunesi occurred between 8 PM and 4 AM while that of Th. brachipyga and Th. ubiquitalis occurred between 2 AM and 6 AM. In the urban environment, the 150 m site presented the highest abundance. Bichromomyia flaviscutellata was sampled in all sites. Gravid females of Pressatia choti and Bi. flaviscutellata were sampled in the urban environment. Putative differential activity between the species herein assessed and their urban dispersal observed are worthy of note, adding data for supporting vector surveillance at a local scale.

Background: Many factors, such as religion, geography, and customs, influence end-of-life practices. This variability exists even between different physicians. Objective: To observe and describe the end-of-life actions of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and document the variables that might influence decision-making at the end of life. Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study performed in the ICU patients of a private hospital from March 2017 to March 2022. We used the Philips Tasy Electronic Medical Record database of clinical records; 298 patients were included in the study during these five years (2017-2022). The data analysis was done with the statistical package SPSS version 23 for Windows. Results: A total of 297 patients were included in this study, of which more than half were men. About 60% of our sample had private health insurance, whereas the remaining paid out of pocket. Most patients had withholding treatment, followed by failed cardiopulmonary resuscitation, withdrawal treatment, and brain death, and none of the patients had acceleration of the dying process. The main cause of admission to the ICU in our center was respiratory complications. Most of our samples were Catholics. Conclusions: Decision-making at the end of life is a complex process. Active participation of the patient, when possible, the patient's family, doctors, and nurses, can give different perspectives and a more compassionate and individualized approach to end-of-life care.

This study explores how the Household Dietary Diversity Score (HDDS) and spatial visualization can inform food governance in Chile, focusing on socio-demographic and geographical determinants affecting food consumption patterns. A national household database (n = 4047), including households from 2019 (n = 3967; 98.02%) and 2020 (n = 80; 1.98%), provided by the "Family Support Program of Food Self-Sufficiency" (FSPFS) of the Ministry of Social Development and Family, was analyzed. The findings revealed that Chilean vulnerable households were led mostly by women (86.6%), with an age average of 55.9 ± 15.6 years old, versus 68.9 ± 12.9 years in the case of men. The intake frequency analysis showed that dairy, fruits, and vegetables were below the recommended values in at least half of the households, and that fats and sugars were above recommended levels. Regarding the HDDS (0-189), the national average was 91.4 ± 20.6 and was significantly influenced by the number of minors in the households, water access, food access issues, and residing in the Zona Sur. Finally, the spatial visualization showed that the Zona Central had higher consumption of fruits and vegetables, while the extreme zones Norte Grande and Zona Austral showed higher intakes of fats and sugars. These findings emphasize the importance of leveraging data insights like the HDDS and spatial visualization to enhance food security and inform food governance strategies.

The Caatinga, an exclusive biome in Brazil, is the largest tropical dry forest area in the Americas. It is characterized by a semi-arid climate and various soils that harbor a great diversity of flora and fauna. Novel records of aerial insectivorous bat species in the family Molossidae in the Chapada Diamantina, northeastern Brazil are presented. The study is based on field sampling of 115 molossid bat specimens from six genera and 12 taxonomically confirmed species, along with four taxa requiring further evaluation for definitive species identification. All specimens were obtained using mist nets around a small freshwater lagoon surrounded by semideciduous dry forest. The verified genera were Cynomops, Eumops, Molossops, Molossus, Neoplatymops, and Nyctinomops. Our findings enhance the understanding of bat diversity in the Brazilian Caatinga, with the first records of Eumopsdelticus, E.bonariensis, and Molossuscurrentium. The most abundant species were Molossusrufus, Eumopsglaucinus, Cynomopsplanirostris, Nyctinomopslaticaudatus, and Molossusmolossus. Previously unreported morphological and morphometric variations for these Caatinga taxa were examined. Additionally, information on sexual dimorphism in craniodental characteristics of Molossopstemminckii and variations in the presence of the sagittal crest in Neoplatymopsmattogrossensis are provided. Based on the voucher specimens from this study, the recognized number of species of Molossidae known from the Caatinga has increased to 21. Our results offer new insights into the taxonomy and biogeography of Neotropical molossids, highlighting their importance as members of bat communities in dry forest ecosystems from northeastern South America.

Tin (Sn) metal has emerged as a promising anode for aqueous batteries, due to its high capacity, non-toxicity, and cost-effectiveness. However, Sn metal has often been coupled with strong and corrosive sulfuric acids (2-3 M), leading to severe electrode corrosion and hydrogen evolution issues. Although high efficiency and long cycling were reported, the results were achieved using high currents to kinetically mask electrode-electrolyte side reactions. Herein, we introduce a low-acidity tin chloride electrolyte (pH=1.09) as a more viable option, which eliminates the need of strong acids and enables a reversible dendrite-free Sn plating chemistry. Remarkably, the plating efficiency approaches unity (99.97%) under standard testing conditions (1 mA cm-2 for 1 mAh cm-2), which maintains high at 99.23-99.93% across various aggressive conditions, including low current (0.1-0.25 mA cm-2), high capacity (5-10 mAh cm-2), and extended resting time (24-72 hours). The battery calendar life is further prolonged to 3064 hours, significantly surpassing literature reports. Additionally, we presented an effective method to mitigate the potential Sn2+ oxidization issue on the cathode, demonstrating long-cycling Sn||LiMn2O4 hybrid batteries. This work offers critical insights for developing highly reversible Sn metal batteries.

BACKGROUND: Maternal psychological distress during pregnancy can negatively impact fetal development, resulting in long-lasting consequences for the offspring. These effects show a sex bias. The mechanisms whereby prenatal stress induces functional and/or structural changes in the placental-fetal unit remain poorly understood. Maternal circulating small extracellular vesicles (sEVs) are good candidates to act as "stress signals" in mother-to-fetus communication. Using a repetitive restraint-based rat model of prenatal stress, we examined circulating maternal sEVs under stress conditions and tested whether they could target placental-fetal tissues. RESULTS: Our mild chronic maternal stress during pregnancy paradigm induced anhedonic-like behavior in pregnant dams and led to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), particularly in male fetuses and placentas. The concentration and cargo of maternal circulating sEVs changed under stress conditions. Specifically, there was a significant reduction in neuron-enriched proteins and a significant increase in astrocyte-enriched proteins in blood-borne sEVs from stressed dams. To study the effect of repetitive restraint stress on the biodistribution of maternal circulating sEVs in the fetoplacental unit, sEVs from pregnant dams exposed to stress or control protocol were labeled with DiR fluorescent die and injected into pregnant females previously exposed to control or stress protocol. Remarkably, maternal circulating sEVs target placental/fetal tissues and, under stress conditions, fetal tissues are more receptive to sEVs. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that maternal circulating sEVs can act as novel mediators/modulators of mother-to-fetus stress communication. Further studies are needed to identify placental/fetal cellular targets of maternal sEVs and characterize their contribution to stress-induced sex-specific placental and fetal changes.

BACKGROUND: Evidence shows that motivational practices focused on utility, importance, and autonomy shape university students' motivational orientation toward learning. On the other hand, the relationship between these variables and motivational orientation toward learning is not linear and requires models that describe their behavior over time. METHOD: In this study, mathematical modeling based on system dynamics methodology is used to simulate in health students the temporal dynamics of the motivational orientation toward learning based on the behavior of these variables in different scenarios. RESULTS: The results indicate that a) Mastery is sensitive to changes in frequency when importance and autonomy practices are performed; b) the development of Mastery is critical in the first three semesters of academic life, but its loss is hardly recoverable even when practices are incorporated in subsequent semesters; c) Utility-focused motivational practices have no significant effect on the development of learning-oriented motivation. CONCLUSION: These findings have significant practical implications for higher education. Understanding the critical role of Mastery in the early stages of academic life and the limited potential for recovery if lost can help raise awareness of the importance of early implementation of motivational practices focused on relevance and autonomy.

Prediabetes is defined as a state of moderate hyperglycemia. Here, we used freeze-dried seeds of Stenocereus stellatus (white tunillo) as a possible therapeutic strategy for the treatment of prediabetes. In the aqueous extract of freeze-dried seeds of white tunillo, polyphenols were identified using the Folin-Ciocalteu technique, separated by UPLC and analyzed by infrared spectrophotometry. Five well-defined peaks with good resolution were observed in the chromatogram of the aqueous extract obtained by UPLC. Two of these peaks corresponded to polyphenols with similarity to quercetin and rutin. The subchronic oral administration of freeze-dried seeds of white tunillo for 14 days in a prediabetes model in female Wistar rats reversed hyperglycemia and glucose intolerance. Treatment with the freeze-dried seeds reversed the decrease in the hepatic expression of Akt, eNOS, and p-eNOSSer1177 but did not reverse the decrease in MnSOD, catalase, and GPx1. No changes in the expression of GPx4 and p-AktSer473 were observed in the pathological state or with the treatment but there was an increase in the expression and activity of eNOS. The bioactive compounds present in the freeze-dried seeds of Stenocereus stellatus could provide guidelines for studying the mechanisms of action through which they reverse signs of prediabetes.

This study aimed to isolate and characterize Pseudomonas native strains from the rhizospheric soil of Minthostachys verticillata plants to evaluate their potential as plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). A total of 22 bacterial isolates were obtained and subjected to various biochemical tests, as well as assessments of plant growth-promoting traits such as phosphate solubilization, hydrogen cyanide production, biocontrol properties through antibiosis, and indole acetic production. Genotypic analysis via 16S rRNA gene sequencing and phylogenetic tree construction identified the strains, with one particular strain named SM 33 showing significant growth-promoting effects on M. verticillata seedlings. This strain, SM 33, showed high similarity to Stutzerimonas stutzeri based on 16S rRNA gene sequencing and notably increased both shoot fresh weight and root dry weight of the plants. These findings underscore the potential application of native Pseudomonas strains in enhancing plant growth and health, offering promising avenues for sustainable agricultural practices.

PURPOSE: The pandemic has caused stress due to isolation, loss of loved ones, work and learning changes, financial instability, fear of infection, and uncertainty. It has negatively impacted mental health, particularly increasing anxiety, and depression symptoms. This study analyzed anxiety and depression symptoms over the first 25 months of the COVID-19 pandemic, considering age group, socioeconomic status, and gender. METHODS: A longitudinal study with 6 repeated measures was conducted, involving 988 adult participants from Argentina. Adapted versions of the BDI-II and STAI were administered through online questionnaires at 2, 14, 50, 130, 390, and 750 days since the start of the lockdown. RESULTS: The results showed a sustained increase in anxiety and depression symptoms up to 390 days, followed by a decrease in anxiety below initial levels at 750 days. Depressive symptoms significantly decreased after 750 days but remained higher than initial levels. CONCLUSION: Women consistently scored higher than men, lower socioeconomic status individuals reported more symptoms, and younger individuals had higher anxiety and depression, which decreased with age. Surprisingly, older individuals displayed better mental health indicators compared to the rest of the population.

BACKGROUND: The increase in cases of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) underlines the urgency of finding effective methods to slow its progression. Given the limited effectiveness of current pharmacological options to prevent or treat the early stages of this deterioration, non-pharmacological alternatives are especially relevant. OBJECTIVE: To assess the effectiveness of a cognitive-motor intervention based on immersive virtual reality (VR) that simulates an activity of daily living (ADL) on cognitive functions and its impact on depression and the ability to perform such activities in patients with MCI. METHODS: Thirty-four older adults (men, women) with MCI were randomized to the experimental group (n = 17; 75.41 ± 5.76) or control (n = 17; 77.35 ± 6.75) group. Both groups received motor training, through aerobic, balance and resistance activities in group. Subsequently, the experimental group received cognitive training based on VR, while the control group received traditional cognitive training. Cognitive functions, depression, and the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs) were assessed using the Spanish versions of the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA-S), the Short Geriatric Depression Scale (SGDS-S), and the of Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (IADL-S) before and after 6-week intervention (a total of twelve 40-minutes sessions). RESULTS: Between groups comparison did not reveal significant differences in either cognitive function or geriatric depression. The intragroup effect of cognitive function and geriatric depression was significant in both groups (p < 0.001), with large effect sizes. There was no statistically significant improvement in any of the groups when evaluating their performance in ADLs (control, p = 0.28; experimental, p = 0.46) as expected. The completion rate in the experimental group was higher (82.35%) compared to the control group (70.59%). Likewise, participants in the experimental group reached a higher level of difficulty in the application and needed less time to complete the task at each level. CONCLUSIONS: The application of a dual intervention, through motor training prior to a cognitive task based on Immersive VR was shown to be a beneficial non-pharmacological strategy to improve cognitive functions and reduce depression in patients with MCI. Similarly, the control group benefited from such dual intervention with statistically significant improvements. Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is considered a functional food due to its polyphenol content that benefits the body. The type of processing the fruit undergoes is important, as this also influences the concentrations of these compounds. The pomegranate juice was extracted by two methods: manual extraction using a manual juicer through heat treatment in a water bath (Man-P), and extraction through mechanical pressing using Good Nature X-1 equipment and hyperbaric sanitization (Mech-Hyp). Bromatological analyses showed significant differences (p ≤ 0.05) between the two treatments. When subjected to hyperbaric sanitization, the juice showed higher concentrations of moisture, soluble solids, protein, and carbohydrates. In an antioxidant analysis, the ABTS radical showed no significant difference in the treatments, with 96.99% inhibition. For the DPPH radical, the sample with the highest inhibition was Man-P with 98.48%. The determination of phenols showed that there was a higher concentration in juice that underwent pasteurization (104.566 mg GAE/mL). However, the Mech-Hyp treatment exhibited a minor concentration of phenols with 85.70 mg GAE/mL. FTIR spectra revealed that the functional groups were mainly associated with carbohydrates. Regarding ACE inhibition, it was observed that the Man-P and Mech-Hyp juices showed greater inhibition of enzyme in hypertensive patients compared to normotensive patients. This activity can be attributed to the mechanisms of action of antioxidant compounds. Both extraction methods manual and mechanical pressing resulted in increased antioxidant and antihypertensive activity. The antioxidant compounds accompanied by adequate sanitation were decisive in an antimicrobial analysis, since no pathogenic microorganisms were observed in the juices.
