RESUMEN

Following the description of Eugenianaraveana in 2016 from the cloud forest of the Cofre de Perote volcano, Mexico, the doubt about the existence of another unlocalized and sympatric species of Eugenia remained. After years of searching, the second endemic species of the Cofre de Perote volcano, Eugeniasarahchazaroi, is presented here. It belongs to the section Umbellatae, and is described, illustrated, and compared with E.naraveana and E.coetzalensis, recently described from Veracruz, the second state with the highest diversity of Eugenia in Mexico. The species is only known from the type locality and is classified in the Critically Endangered CR B1+B2(a,biii) category of the IUCN Red List conservation assessments.

RESUMEN

Chagas disease, considered a neglected disease, was initially confined to rural localities in endemic areas; however, in recent years through the process of urbanization and migration of infected people, the disease is gaining importance in urban environments. The presence of the vector in urban areas in most cases is due to the passive transport of vectors, but recently, its presence seems to be linked to vector adaptation processes associated with climate change. This paper reports the occurrence of an infected triatomine in the peridomicile of a house in an urban area of Córdoba, Veracruz, Mexico, where the species found is described, the molecular characteristics and resistance to BZN and NFX of the Trypanosoma cruzi isolate obtained, as well as serological data of the dwelling inhabitants. These urban disease scenarios make it possible to generate new scientific knowledge and enable the creation of new control strategies for Chagas disease vectors.

On 25 August 2021, a single female sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) was found stranded dead in Playa Tuxpan, Veracruz, Mexico. Skin biopsies were obtained and screened for the detection of various potentially pathogenic bacterial genera, using conventional polymerase chain reaction and sequencing of the positive amplicons. We recorded, for the first time, the presence of Vibrio paraheamolyticus in skin samples from P. macrocephalus in the Gulf of Mexico. Additionally, we discuss 29 records reporting strandings of sperm whales from six states of the Mexican Republic. Most of the records are concentrated in the Pacific Ocean. Our findings increase the inventory of bacteria reported in P. macrocephalus worldwide, summarising the knowledge of stranding events in sperm whale populations in Mexico.

PURPOSE: The objective of this study was to molecularly characterize Mexican isolates of T. cruzi obtained from infected triatomine bugs (the vectors of T. cruzi) and to evaluate their susceptibility to Nifurtimox (NFX). METHODS: Three isolates obtained from Triatoma dimidiata (collected in the State of Veracruz) and one isolate obtained from Triatoma bassolsae (collected in the State of Puebla) were molecularly characterized and the expression of genes associated with natural resistance to NFX was analyzed by qPCR. RESULTS: Molecular characterization by PCR showed that isolates Zn3, Zn5, and SRB1 belong to the DTU TcI, while isolate Sum3 belongs to TcIV. The latter was also confirmed by sequencing of mitochondrial genes. Isolate Zn5 was the most sensitive to treatment with NFX (IC50, 6.8 µM), isolates SRB1 and Zn3 were partially resistant (IC50, 12.8 µM and 12.7 µM) and isolate Sum3 showed a high degree of resistance to NFX (IC50, 21.4 µM). We also found an association between decreased NTR1 or OYE gene expression with NFX resistance. CONCLUSION: Our results also evidenced a high variability in the susceptibility to NFX of these T. cruzi isolates Central and Southeastern Mexico, suggesting the presence of naturally resistant isolates circulating in the country. These results have important implications for defining treatment policies for patients with Chagas disease.

BACKGROUND: Mexican population databases for autosomal STRs are scarce, and no previous studies have been performed with the Qiagen Investigator 24plex GO! AIM: To analyse the frequency of 21 autosomal short tandem repeat (STR) loci and forensic parameters in individuals from Veracruz state, Mexico. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A total of 234 unrelated individuals were analysed with the Investigator 24plex GO! Kit, which includes the following autosomal STRs: TH01, D3S1358, vWA, D21S11, TPOX, D1S1656, D12S391, SE33, D10S1248, D22S1045, D19S433, D8S133879, D2S1338, D2S441, D18S51, FGA, D16S539, CSF1PO, D13S317, D5S818, and D7S820. Allele frequencies, forensic parameters, and relationships with neighbouring Mexican populations were estimated. RESULTS: The STRs analysed were in Hardy-Weinberg Equilibrium (HWE). The combined matching probability and combined PE were 1.5266 E-24 and 0.999999988711, respectively. The D18S51 and SE33 loci presented the highest Ho (0.8974 and 0.8932) and PE (0.7902 and 0.7815), respectively. The highest PIC (0.9337) and PD (0.9894) values corresponded to SE33. Conversely, D22S1045 had the lowest PIC and PE (0.5533 and 0.3546, respectively). A population cluster among southern Mexican populations, which included non-differentiation between Guerrero and Veracruz states was detected. CONCLUSION: The forensic efficacy of the 21 STRs analysed by the Investigator 24plex GO! Kit was evaluated in the Veracruz state. Moreover, new population clusters that have not yet been described and are related to geographic regions were identified, and these are in agreement with previously reported ancestral differences.

Background: Currently, at the global level, human food is mainly based on a few crops extensively cultivated as monocultures. Climate change, changes in land to agriculture and cattle raising, as well as the scarcity of water all affect and reduce the possibility of cultivating alternative crops. One way to face this global problem is to promote the knowledge, production and consumption of native food species on a regional scale.For this study, two databases were constructed for the Gulf of Mexico Province: 1) edible plant species with their corresponding common name, category of use, plant organ(s) utilised as food and type of management; 2) distribution records of these edible species. These species, in addition to being part of the biological diversity of Mexico are of high nutritional, cultural and gastronomical value and have been present in the diet of the inhabitants and ethnic groups in the region since pre-Hispanic times. New information: This study presents the native edible plants of the Gulf of Mexico Province, an area inhabited by 15 ethnic groups. The main novelty of this contribution is the edible plant species database, which includes the records of 482 species that belong to 101 families and 268 genera. We also present information rarely reported in an ethnobotanical inventory: 1) category of food use, 2) category of plant organ used, 3) common name, 4) type of management and 5) the georeferenced distribution of species occurrence in the Gulf of Mexico Province.

ANTECEDENTES: El estado de Veracruz se ubica en el sureste de México y presenta una alta prevalencia de tuberculosis (TBC) y drogo resistencia. Sin embargo, la composición de los genotipos circulantes es poco conocida. OBJETIVO: Caracterizar la diversidad genética de la TBC en la jurisdicción sanitaria V del estado de Veracruz. MÉTODOS: Estudio transversal realizado en aislados clínicos de pacientes con TBC residentes de la jurisdicción V. Se determinó la sensibilidad a medicamentos de primera línea. La genotipificación se realizó mediante espoligotipificación y MIRU-VNTR 15 loci. RESULTADOS: Entre los 74 aislados analizados se observó resistencia a un fármaco en 44 (59%) aislados. Linaje L4 (EuroAmericano) se presentó en 73 aislados. Se identificaron cinco sublinajes; H (40%), T (22%), LAM (16%), X (13%) y U (7%). El 32% de los aislados se agrupó mediante su espoligotipo y 40% en 10 complejos clonales. CONCLUSIONES: Es la primera descripción sobre la estructura genética de TBC en la región central de Veracruz. La diversidad de genotipos podría contribuir a su dispersión en la región. Esta información será útil para el desarrollo de intervenciones y reducir el impacto de TBC en la población.


BACKGROUND: The state of Veracruz is placed in southeastern Mexico and has a high prevalence of tuberculosis (TB) and drug resistance. Nevertheless, the composition of circulating genotypes in the central region of the state is partially known. AIM: To characterize the genetic diversity of TB in the sanitary jurisdiction V of the state of Veracruz. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among clinical isolates from patients with TB living in the jurisdiction V, in Jalapa Ver., Mexico. Sensitivity to first-line drugs was determined, and genotyping was performed by spoligotyping and MIRU-VNTR 15 loci. RESULTS: Among the 74 isolates analyzed, resistance to one drug was observed in 44 isolates. L4 (EuroAmerican) was the major lineage identified. Five sublineages were the most abundant; H (40%), T (22%), LAM (16%), X (13%) and U (7%). Only 32% of the isolates were clustered by spoligotype and 40% were placed in ten clonal complexes. CONCLUSIONS: This is the first description of the genetic structure of TB in the central region of Veracruz. The diversity of genotypes could contribute to its dispersion. This information will be useful for the development of interventions to reduce the impact of TB in the population.

Knowledge on species taxonomic identity is essential to understand biological and biogeographical processes and for studies on biodiversity. Species the genus Tremoctopus have been confused in the past and are inconsistently identified. To clarify of the taxonomic diagnosis Tremoctopus violaceus Delle Chiaje, 1830, an evaluation of morphological and meristic characters, as well as morphometric indices and genetic analyses, was undertaken. The analyzed octopod was an opportunistically collected mature female of 640 mm in total length, with a mantle length of 135 mm and a total weight of 1.02 kg. Evidence of autotomy as a defensive mechanism for protecting the egg mass is presented. The 16S haplotype sequenced from this specimen represents the first one publicly available for this species from the Gulf of Mexico. The genetic divergence between this haplotype and those reported from the Pacific Ocean is representative of interspecific variation in other taxa, which suggests that "T. violaceus" in the Pacific Ocean (KY649286, MN435565, and AJ252767) should be addressed as T. gracilis instead. Genetic evidence to separate T. violaceus and T. gracilis is presented. The studied specimen from the Gulf of Mexico represents the westernmost known occurrence of T. violaceus and the first record from the southwestern Gulf of Mexico.

BACKGROUND: The sabellid genera Anamobaea Krøyer, 1856 and Notaulax Tauber, 1879 are two of the most attractive polychaete worms in coral reefs. Anamobaea is represented by two Caribbean species and Notaulax with 24 species from around the world, six of them previously known to tropical America. During examination of fouling biota and sclerozoans from Mexico, Anamobaea orstedii Krøyer, 1856 was found in coral reefs from the southern Gulf of Mexico and three species of Notaulax were identified to the Mexican Pacific, two of them being new species to science. NEW INFORMATION: Anamobaea orstedii Krøyer, 1856 is first reported as sclerozoan of dead coral from the southern Gulf of Mexico. An amendment to the generic diagnosis of Anamobaea is provided, based on the presence of a higher number of skeletal cells than previously recorded; height, shape and exposition of the anterior peristomial ring; the non-fusion of dorsal collar margins to faecal groove; shape of collar chaetiger and abdominal chaetae and distribution and shape of radiolar ocelli. Notaulax californica (Treadwell, 1906) is reported as fouling in buoys and docks from the Gulf of California. Two new species of Notaulax are described: the former was found in hull and dock fouling from La Paz (Gulf of California) and the second one as sclerozoan of oysters from a dock fouling in Acapulco (south Mexican Pacific). In addition, reproductive features are described for the first time for A. orstedii which is a simultaneous hermaphrodite with female and males gametes found within the same segments of abdominal region. Oocytes develop synchronously and sperm morphology (spherical nucleus and rounded acrosome, four spherical mitochondria and a long free flagellum) suggest an adaptation to broadcast spawning and external fertilisation. Species of Notaulax here examined were gonochoric, with gametes distributed in abdominal segments.

Two new species of Megarthrus are described from cloud forests of the Mexican state of Veracruz: M. cavianae Rodríguez, Navarrete-Heredia Arriaga-Varela sp. nov., and Chiapas:  M. chiapas Cuccodoro sp. nov. They differ from the two hitherto known Mexican species M. altivagans Bernhauer, 1929, and M. alatorreorum Rodríguez Navarrete-Heredia, 2015, both from temperate forests of the Transmexican Volcanic Belt, by having synapomorphic features of the M. inaequalis-supergroup of species. This lineage includes all the Central and South American members of the genus, with the inclusion of these species, the distribution of the group is extend by more than 5 degree of latitude to the North. Within this lineage, the two new species share a very peculiar morphology of the male abdominal sternite VIII found elsewhere in the genus only in M. flavosignatus Bierig, 1940, and M. zunilensis Sharp, 1887, with which they form the M. zunilensis-group of species defined here.

The combustion of alkyl-lead gasolines was the primary anthropogenic source of Pb in the second half of the twentieth century. Previously deposited Pb-aerosols enriched the organic matter and Fe-oxi-hydroxides phases of soils, which long after continue being transported downstream to be an important source of Pb into the ocean. Geochemical partition of Pb was determined in estuarine sediments of the Jamapa River, southern Gulf of Mexico, by the Tessier's sequential extraction protocol. The residual fraction, conformed by siliciclastic particles, contain the highest proportion of Pb (8.6 µg/g = 70%), been the main source into the ocean. However, as the organic carbon and Fe,MnO(OH) fractions, together summed the 26% of total Pb in samples, so, it is assumed that previously deposited anthropogenic Pb, from alkyl-lead gasolines, still is an important source of this element, that is transported by the Jamapa River, enriching the coastal area.

OBJECTIVES: To identify blood donors with occult hepatitis B infections (OBIs), determine the prevalence of antibody to hepatitis B core antigen (anti-HBc) positivity and estimate the impact of anti-HBc screening on donor deferral at CETS-Veracruz (Mexico). BACKGROUND: Hepatitis B virus infection is a major concern in transfusion medicine. Mexican regulations only mandate screening for hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), and there are no requirements regarding testing for anti-HBc or use of a nucleic acid test (NAT). There is, therefore, limited information about the prevalence of anti-HBc positivity and occult hepatitis B among blood donors in Mexico. METHODS: This retrospective study examined individuals who donated blood to CETS-Veracruz from June 2014 to June 2017. All donors were serologically examined according to Mexican health regulations, and the prevalence of anti-HBc positivity was determined. A NAT was used to identify individuals with OBIs. RESULTS: We analysed the data of 28 016 blood donors. Over 4 years, the average prevalence of anti-HBc positivity was 1.05%. The risk factors for anti-HBc positivity were low education and age over 50 years. There were nine donors with OBIs. CONCLUSION: The presence of donors with OBIs in CETS-Veracruz and other Mexican blood banks highlights the need to mandate the implementation of anti-HBc screening in Mexico.

We studied HLA class I (HLA-A, -B) and class II (HLA-DRB1, -DQB1) alleles by PCR-SSP based typing in 1113 Mexicans from the state of Veracruz living in the cities of Coatzacoalcos (N = 55), Orizaba (N = 60), Córdoba (N = 56), Poza Rica (N = 45), Veracruz (N = 171), Xalapa (N = 187) and rural communities (N = 539) to obtain information regarding allelic and haplotypic frequencies. We found that the most frequent haplotypes include 12 Native American haplotypes. Admixture estimates revealed that the main genetic components are Native American (64.93 ±â€¯1.27% by ML; 55.10% of Native American haplotypes) and European (26.56 ±â€¯0.89% by ML; 28.38% of European haplotypes), and a relatively high African genetic component (8.52 ±â€¯1.82% by ML; 8.78% of African haplotypes).

RESUMEN

The larva of Phyllogomphoides pugnifer Donnelly, 1979 is described for the first time based on reared specimens to emergence, and several F-0 larvae collected in Chiapas and Veracruz states, Mexico. The larva of P. pugnifer can be separated from other larvae of the genus by the length/width proportion of structures such as prementum, ligula, and abdominal segment 10, as well as length of cercus relative to epiproct.

RESUMEN

We found Rickettsia parkeri in Amblyomma ovale ticks collected in Veracruz, Mexico, in 2018. We sequenced gene segments of gltA, htrA, sca0, and sca5; phylogenetic reconstruction revealed near-complete identity with R. parkeri strain Atlantic Rainforest. Enhanced surveillance is needed in Mexico to determine the public health relevance of this bacterium.

Description of the pupa and redescriptions of the larva, female, male and male genitalia of Toxorhynchites (Lynchiella) moctezuma (Dyar Knab) are presented based on specimens from Mexico, providing information that helps to distinguish this species from other species within the subgenus Lynchiella. Additionally, we report the first finding of Tx. (Lyn.) grandiosus (Williston) in the state of Veracruz, Mexico.

RESUMEN

A new flea species, Kohlsia misantlensis, is described from the central mountains of Veracruz, Mexico. The hosts of this new species are the Mexican deer mouse Peromyscus mexicanus (Saussure, 1860) (Mammalia: Rodentia:Muridae) and the Mexican spiny pocket mouse Heteromys sp. (Heteromyidae). This flea species is easily recognized by the great development of sternite VIII with a tuft of seven long bristles near the apex. The new species is included in a taxonomic key for the species of genus Kohlsia occurring in Mexico.

The genus Bartonella encompasses several zoonotic species that cause emerging infectious diseases in humans. These species are transmitted to humans by hematophagous arthropods. In South America, sand flies are the most important vectors of Bartonella bacilliformis, the etiological agent of Verruga peruana. Due to the importance of bartonellosis in public health, the aim of this study was to detect Bartonella in wild populations of phlebotomine sand flies in southern Mexico. In total, 29 sand flies belonging to 6 species were collected. Only 2 specimens were positive, representing a prevalence of 8.69% (2/23). This appears to be the first report of Bartonella sp. in phlebotomine sand flies outside the endemic area of Verruga peruana in South America. Further studies are needed to clarify the relation between this bacterium and sand flies in Mexico.

The Jamapa-Atoyac fluvial system (JAFS) is tropical river system, which flows from the Pico de Orizaba, the highest elevation in Mexico, to end in the city of Veracruz, in the southern Gulf of Mexico. The geology of the watershed is dominated by Tertiary igneous rocks and Cretaceous limestones in the upper basin, and Quaternary alluvial sediments in the lower basin. Seventy percent of the land in the watershed has been deforested, and there are various urban and industrial areas. The JAFS is been widely known as source of trace elements to the coastal zone, and considered as contaminated. So, the aim of this study was to assess the environmental quality of the JAFS, using the total (TC) and the bioavailable (BF) concentrations of Cu and Pb, in surface fluvial sediments samples, in the dry (DS) and rainy (RS) seasons of the 2016. Average concentrations and ranges for the JAFS were CuT 10.2 ± 5.2 µg/g (2.2-41.5 µg/g); CuB 1.1 ± 1.4 µg/g (0.04-10.7 µg/g); PbT 5.0 ± 1.2 µg/g (1.8-10.9 µg/g); and PbB 0.7 ± 0.4 µg/g (0.1-2.0 µg/g). The BF only accounts for the ~ 10% of the total concentration for both elements, and is highly correlated to the mud content. No differences in average concentrations were found between the upper and lower bassins, nor among areas with different lithology. Cu presented higher concentrations during the RS, which suggest an enrichment of fluvial sediments from soil erosion, contrary, to Pb with higher concentrations during the DS. Although, some sampling stations, those located immediately after the Cordoba and Miguel Aleman cities, presented higher than average Cu and Pb concentrations, they did not exceeded the limits established by national environmental regulations, sediment quality guidelines, geoaccumulation index, and potential ecological risk indexes. Hence, the JAFS may be considered as not contaminated by Cu and Pb.
