RESUMEN

Summary: Background. Gibberellin Regulated Proteins (GRPs) are small glycoproteins that induce allergy to various types of fruit. This study aimed to evaluate co-sensitization to cypress pollen and other molecules responsible for fruit allergy, such as nsLTP (Pru p 3), PR-10 (Bet v1), and Profilin (Bet v2). Methods. Sixty subjects sensitized to peach GRP (Pru p 7) were consecutively recruited from four Italian centers: 28 males and 32 females (mean age 37.9 years; range 11-79). Specific IgE for Pru p 7, Pru p 3, Bet v 1, Bet v 2, cypress pollen extract (Cup s), and Cup a 1 were determined in all subjects. Results. Sensitization rates to Cup s, Cup a 1, Pru p 3, Bet v 1, and Bet v 2 in the entire studied population were 90.0%, 83.3%, 45.8%, 40.0%, and 30.0%, respectively. In subjects residing in Northern Italy, the respective sensitization rates were 96.4%, 80.0%, 50.0%, 73.3%, and 40.0%, while in those residing in Southern Italy, they were 83.3%, 86.7%, 40.0%, 6.7%, and 20.0%. The only significant difference was observed for PR-10 (p less than 0.0001) Co-sensitization to PR-10 was found to be associated with a reduced risk of anaphylaxis (OR: 0.125). Allergic reactions were most commonly triggered by peach (26/40), followed by orange (12/40), with other foods being less frequently implicated. Conclusions. This study confirms a high association between sensitization to Pru p 7 and cypress pollen and highlights a high percentage of co-sensitization to nsLTP, PR-10, and profilin. PR-10 emerged as a protective factor against anaphylaxis.

RESUMEN

Novel D-A1-A2-π-A organic sensitizers (FZ-sensitizer), utilizing spiro[fluorene-9,9'-phenanthren]-10'-one (A1) and benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole(A2) moiety as two auxiliary acceptors, are synthesized and applied in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) and hydrogen production. By incorporating a bulky A1 and A2 between the donor (D) and π-bridge moiety, structural modifications inhibit molecular aggregation, while the carbonyl group enhances the capture of Li+ ions, thereby delaying charge recombination. Furthermore, the extended π-conjugation broadens the light absorption range and enhances the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of FZ-2 under AM1.5 conditions, achieving up to 5.72%. Co-sensitization with N719 and FZ-2 shows PCE of 9.60% under one sun. Under TL84 indoor light conditions, the efficiency is 29.69% at 2500 lux. FZ-sensitizers also exhibit high efficiency in photocatalytic hydrogen production. The hydrogen production activities of FZ-2 are 9190 µmol/g (1 hour) and 76582 µmol/g (12 hours) respectively, while those of FZ-1 are 7430 µmol/g (1 hour) and 64004 µmol/g (12 hours), indicating that FZ-2 can inject charges into TiO2 more efficiently and utilize them for water splitting. Stability testing of photocatalytic water splitting after 12 hours shows a turnover number (TON) of 4249 for FZ-1 and 5378 for FZ-2.

RESUMEN

Constructing artificial photocatalysts with panchromatic solar energy utilization remains an appealing challenge. Herein, two complementary photosensitizers, [Ru(bpy)3]2+ (bpy = 2,2'-bipyridine) and porphyrin dyes, have been cosensitized in metal covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs), resulting in the MCOFs with strong light absorption covering the full visible spectrum. Under panchromatic light irradiation, the cosensitized MCOFs exhibited remarkable photocatalytic H2 evolution with an optimum rate of up to 33.02 mmol g-1 h-1. Even when exposed to deep-red light (λ = 700 ± 10 nm), a commendable H2 production (0.79 mmol g-1 h-1) was still obtained. Theoretical calculation demonstrated that the [Ru(bpy)3]2+ and porphyrin modules in our MCOFs have a synergistic effect to trigger an interesting dual-channel photosensitization pathway for efficient light-harvesting and energy conversion. This work highlights the potential of combining multiple PSs in MCOFs for panchromatic photocatalysis.

RESUMEN

Background: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a prevalent public health concern globally, significantly impacting quality of life. In Thailand, the prevalence of AR is rising, with grass and weed pollen identified as primary outdoor triggers. Objectives: This study aimed to (1) assess patterns of pollen sensitization in Thai AR patients and (2) investigate correlations between demographics/clinical data and SPT results. Methods: A total of 121 individuals aged ≥18 years with clinically diagnosed AR were recruited. Skin prick testing (SPT) was performed using a panel of commonly encountered tropical grass and weed pollen extracts. SPT wheal sizes and clinical symptom scores were recorded. Correlations between SPT outcomes and symptom scores were analyzed. Results: Among the participants, 104 (85.95%) exhibited positive SPT reactions to at least one pollen type. Nutsedge (76/121), para grass (57/121), and Bermuda grass (48/121) were the most frequently identified allergens. Hurricane grass elicited the strongest reaction, evidenced by the highest average wheal size (6.2 mm). Poly-sensitization was observed in 77 (63.6%) of the SPT-positive individuals, with most cases involving two different pollen extracts (35/77). Notably, AR severity positively correlated with both average wheal size and the number of positive SPT tests. Conclusion: This study highlights nutsedge, para grass, and Bermuda grass as major allergenic pollen sources for Thai AR patients. Including nutsedge, hurricane grass, and careless weed in clinical SPT panels is recommended for improved diagnostic accuracy. Additionally, the positive correlation between AR severity and pollen reaction strength emphasizes the importance of implementing patient education and avoidance strategies.

RESUMEN

Among the emerging photovoltaic (PV) technologies, Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs) appear especially interesting in view of their potential for unconventional PV applications. In particular, DSSCs have been proven to provide excellent performances under indoor illumination, opening the way to their use in the field of low-power devices, such as wearable electronics and wireless sensor networks, including those relevant for application to the rapidly growing Internet of Things technology. Considering the low intensity of indoor light sources, efficient light capture constitutes a pivotal factor in optimizing cell efficiency. Consequently, the development of novel dyes exhibiting intense absorption within the visible range and light-harvesting properties well-matched with the emission spectra of the various light sources becomes indispensable. In this review, we will discuss the current state-of-the-art in the design, synthesis, and application of organic dyes as sensitizers for indoor DSSCs, focusing on the most recent results. We will start by examining the various classes of individual dyes reported to date for this application, organized by their structural features, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses. On the basis of this discussion, we will then draft some potential guidelines in an effort to help the design of this kind of sensitizer. Subsequently, we will describe some alternative approaches investigated to improve the light-harvesting properties of the cells, such as the co-sensitization strategy and the use of concerted companion dyes. Finally, the issue of measurement standardization will be introduced, and some considerations regarding the proper characterization methods of indoor PV systems and their differences compared to (simulated) outdoor conditions will be provided.

RESUMEN

Giant power conversion efficiency is achieved by using bifunction ZrO2 : Er3+ /Yb3+ assisted co-sensitised dye-sensitized solar cells. The evolution of the crystalline structure and its microstructure are examined by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy studies. The bi-functional behaviour of ZrO2 : Er3+ /Yb3+ as upconversion, light scattering is confirmed by emission and diffused reflectance studies. The bi-function ZrO2 : Er3+ /Yb3+ (pH=3) assisted photoanode is co-sensitized by use of N719 dye, squaraine SPSQ2 dye and is sandwiched with Platinum based counter electrode. The fabricated DSSC exhibited a giant power conversion efficiency of 12.35 % with VOC of 0.71 V, JSC of 27.06 mA/cm2 , FF of 0.63. The results, which motivated the development of a small DSSC module, gave 6.21 % and is used to drive a tiny electronic motor in indoor and outdoor lighting conditions. Small-area DSSCs connected in series have found that a VOC of 4.52 V is sufficient to power up Internet of Things (IoT) devices.

RESUMEN

Background: Food allergy to peanut and soybean, both legumes, is highly prevalent. The consumption of other legumes and legume protein isolates, some of which may be considered novel foods, is increasing. This may lead to an increase in sensitization and allergy and may pose a risk for legume-allergic (e.g. peanut and soybean) patients due to cross-reactivity. Objective: This study investigated the frequency of co-sensitization and co-allergy between legumes and the role of different protein families. Methods: Six legume-allergic patient groups were included: peanut (n = 30), soybean (n = 30), lupine (n = 30), green pea (n = 30), lentil (n = 17), bean (n = 9). IgE binding to total extracts, protein fractions (7S/11S globulin, 2S albumin, albumin), and 16 individual proteins from 10 legumes (black lentil, blue lupine, chickpea, faba bean, green lentil, pea, peanut, soybean, white bean, and white lupine) was measured by line blot. Results: Co-sensitization varied from 36.7% to 100%. Mono-sensitization was only found in soybean (16.7%), peanut (10%), and green pea-allergic (3.3%) patients. A high frequency of co-sensitization between the 7S/11S globulin fractions of all 10 legumes and individual 7S and 11S globulins was observed. In peanut and soybean-allergic patients, co-allergies for other legumes were uncommon (≤16,7%), while in green pea, lupine, lentil, and bean-allergic patients co-allergy for peanut (64.7%-77.8%) or soybean (50%-64.7%) was frequently seen. Conclusion: Co-sensitization between legumes was high, but generally not clinically relevant. Co-allergy to other legumes was not often seen in peanut- and soybean allergic patients. The 7S and 11S globulins were likely responsible for the observed co-sensitization.

RESUMEN

The use of new natural dyes derived from Leucophyllum frutescens and Ehretia microphylla as well as their combination in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) has been explored for the first time in the current work. The primary pigments that sensitize the semiconductor TiO2 films were found to be carotenoid, anthocyanin, and chlorophyll. Pigments from Leucophyllum frutescens and Ehretia microphylla were designated as LF and EM, and their mixture blended at volume percent of 50:50, 75:25, and 25:75 were labeled as LE1, LE2, and LE3, respectively. The absorption range, emission intensities, and the functional groups of the dyes and dye-loaded TiO2 photo-anode films were analyzed using ultraviolet-visible, photoluminescence and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The surface morphology of bare and sensitized TiO2 films was identified through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). To evaluate the photovoltaic performance of the fabricated devices, the current-voltage characteristics, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis and incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency measurements were performed. The study found that the co-sensitized cell LE2 outperformed both single and mixed dye-based cells, achieving a maximum conversion efficiency of 1.33% with a Voc of 516 mV and a Jsc of 2.55 mA cm-2. This synergetic effect of natural dyes proved the superior performance of DSSCs with co-sensitization.

RESUMEN

This review provides a global overview on Rosaceae allergy and details the particularities of each fruit allergy induced by ten Rosaceae species: almond/peach/cherry/apricot/plum (Amygdaleae), apple/pear (Maleae), and raspberry/blackberry/strawberry (Rosoideae). Data on clinical symptoms, prevalence, diagnosis, and immunotherapies for the treatment of Rosaceae allergy are herein stated. Allergen molecular characterization, cross-reactivity/co-sensitization phenomena, the impact of food processing and digestibility, and the methods currently available for the Rosaceae detection/quantification in foods are also described. Rosaceae allergy has a major impact in context to pollen-food allergy syndrome (PFAS) and lipid transfer protein (LTP) allergies, being greatly influenced by geography, environment, and presence of cofactors. Peach, apple, and almond allergies are probably the ones most affecting the quality of life of the allergic-patients, although allergies to other Rosaceae fruits cannot be overlooked. From patients' perspective, self-allergy management and an efficient avoidance of multiple fruits are often difficult to achieve, which might raise the risk for cross-reactivity and co-sensitization phenomena and increase the severity of the induced allergic responses with time. At this point, the absence of effective allergy diagnosis (lack of specific molecular markers) and studies advancing potential immunotherapies are some gaps that certainly will prompt the progress on novel strategies to manage Rosaceae food allergies.

RESUMEN

Altered DNA methylation in the form of 5-methylcytosine (5-mC) patterns is correlated with disease diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment response. Therefore, accurate analysis of 5-mC is of great significance for the diagnosis of diseases. Here, an efficient enhanced photoelectrochemical (PEC) biosensor was designed for the quantitative analysis of DNA 5-mC based on a cascaded energy level aligned co-sensitization strategy coupling with the bridged DNA nanoprobe (BDN). Firstly, Au nanoparticle/graphite phase carbon nitride/titanium dioxide (AuNPs/g-C3N4@TiO2) nanocomposite was synthesized through in situ growth of AuNPs on g-C3N4@TiO2 surface as a matrix to provide a stable background signal. Next, BDN with a high mass transfer rate synthesized from a pair of DNA tetrahedral as nanomechanical handles was used as a capture probe to bind to the target sequence. The polydopamine nanosphere was applied to load with CdTe QDs (PDANS-CdTe QDs) as a photocurrent label of 5-mC antibodies. When the 5-mC existed, a large number of PDANS-Ab-CdTe QDs were introduced to the electrode surface, the formed CdTe QDs/AuNPs/g-C3N4@TiO2 co-sensitive structure could effectively enhance the electron transfer capability and photocurrent response rate due to the effective cascade energy level arrangement, leading to a significantly enhanced photocurrent signal. The proposed PEC biosensor manifested a wide range from 10-17 M to 10-7 M and a detection limit of 2.2 aM. Meanwhile, the excellent performance indicated the practicability of the designed strategy, thus being capable of the clinical diagnosis of 5-mC.

RESUMEN

Co-sensitization of two or more light-absorbing compounds on a TiO2 surface has recently become one of the most successful strategies in the development of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The specific structure of the dyes for DSSCs implies that they can partly exist in anionic forms in popular solvents used for sensitization. Our study concerns the above two issues being analyzed in detail using the example of the popular carbazole (MK2) and indoline (D205) dyes, studied by stationary absorption and emission, femtosecond transient absorption (in complete cells and in the solutions), current-voltage measurements, DFT and TD-DFT theoretical calculations. After the addition of D205 to DSSC with MK2, the fill factor of the cells was improved, and the electron recombination between TiO2 and the dyes was blocked (observed on sub-nanosecond time scales). Thus, the active co-adsorbent can take the role of the typically used passive additive, like chenodeoxycholic acid. Evidence of the concentration-dependent equilibrium between neutral and anionic forms of dyes with different lifetimes was found in acetonitrile solutions (the best for sensitization), while in ethanol solution the dominant form was the anion (worse for sensitization). Our findings should help in better understanding the operation and optimization of DSSC.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: Many plant food allergens contain homologs to the major birch allergen Bet v 1; therefore, the majority of patients with birch pollen allergy suffer from oral allergy syndrome. We studied the relevance of sensitization of Bet v 1 and co-sensitization with profilin concerning the clinical manifestations of an oral allergy syndrome. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 1119 patients with a positive skin prick test to birch and diagnostic for specific IgE to the allergen components Bet v 1 and profilin were analyzed retrospectively regarding complaints in the upper and lower airways, with demographic data as well as oral and gastrointestinal allergy symptoms. RESULTS: Patients with simultaneous specific IgE to the allergen components Bet v 1 and profilin have to deal more often with an oral allergy syndrome and intestinal reactions. They also suffer more frequently and severely from rhinitis symptoms and show a higher tendency for asthma. No increased number of systemic reactions was seen. CONCLUSION: Patients with birch allergy recognizing both allergens have more probabilities of suffering from an oral allergy syndrome, and allergologists should be aware of this in order to give better advice to their patients.

RESUMEN

The steric shielding offered by sensitizers on semiconducting surfaces as a result of branching in the dyes used offers the less utilization of semiconducting substrate sites during device fabrication in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This work proposes a strategy to increase the coverage through the utilization of small molecules which have the ability to penetrate into the sites. The small molecules play the dual role of vacancy filling and sensitization, which can be viewed as an alternative to co-sensitization also. Hence, we show for the first time ever that the co-adsorption of catechol with Z907 as a sensitizer enhances the electron density in the photo-anode by adsorbing on the vacant sites. Catechol was subsequently adsorbed on TiO2 after Z907 as it has a stronger interaction with TiO2 owing to its favorable thermodynamics. The reduced number of vacant sites, suppressed charge recombination, and enhanced spectral response are responsible for the improvement in the PCEs. Quantitatively, both organic and aqueous electrolytes were used and the co-sensitized DSSCs had PCE enhancements of 7.2 and 60%, respectively, compared to the control devices.

RESUMEN

It is now well-established that avoiding ß-lactam antibiotics, when they are the drugs of choice, results in significantly worse long-term global outcomes for patients. Much of this avoidable morbidity has been caused by widespread warnings in electronic health care record systems not to use cephalosporins in the setting of penicillin allergy. High rates, up to 1000-fold higher than now seen, of immunologically mediated reactions were associated with early impure penicillin preparations. This instilled a rational fear of ß-lactam-associated anaphylaxis in generations of physicians. In the late 1970s, several editorial comments regarding a potential increased risk to patients given cephalosporins who had a history of a penicillin allergy resulted in the warning that became imbedded in the culture of medicine. Over the past 40 years, compelling data have been developed that refute this warning and showed that the risks of avoiding cephalosporins outweighed the benefits. In late 2017, Kaiser Permanente Southern California completely removed all warnings not to use cephalosporins in the setting of a penicillin allergy. The results have recently been published in JAMA Network Open. This Rostrum article provides some of the backstory on the establishment and removal of this warning for physicians who trained over the past 30 years.

RESUMEN

The advent of novel technologies has led to the need for environmental and economic integration. Energy consumption plays a vital role in human existence, and thereby sustainable development is the need of the hour. When the methods of energy production are discussed, renewable resources are opted to meet the needs of the future with the key resources being solar and wind energy. Solar energy is widely adapted and harnessed due to its abundance and various benefits. Silicon-based solar cells, though produced higher efficiencies, have many cons due to their toxicity and cost. Dye-sensitized solar cells have been grounded as a better alternative due to their ability to function under low light, wider angles, and low internal temperature. In this review paper, various organic metal-free dyes, and their efficiencies along with their cell parameters are discussed. These metal-free dyes are adopted over conventional ruthenium dyes due to their non-toxicity, availability, and cost.

RESUMEN

RATIONALE: The co-occurrence of alcohol consumption and sexual activity is associated with increased risk for sexual assault, sexually transmitted disease, and unplanned pregnancy among young adult women with alcohol use disorder (AUD). There is considerable previous work demonstrating neural reactivity to alcohol cues in AUD. Because alcohol consumption and sexual behavior are both rewarding and tend to co-occur, sexual cues may produce similar neural reactivity in women with AUD, possibly indicating a shared mechanism underlying reactivity to both types of cues. Alternatively, reactivity to alcohol versus sexual cues may be distinct, suggesting domain-specific mechanisms. OBJECTIVES: We investigated whether the decision vulnerabilities in AUD women regarding sexual activity were related to differences in brain activation compared to control women. METHODS: Women with (n = 15) and without (n = 16) AUD completed a hypothetical decision-making task during fMRI that presented low- or high-risk scenarios involving visual sexual, appetitive, and neutral cues. RESULTS: Results showed that sexual cues were more often endorsed by women with AUD compared to controls and elicited differential brain activation patterns in frontal, visual, and reward regions. During high-risk decisions, women with AUD failed to downregulate activation, causing hyperactivation compared to controls. CONCLUSIONS: Visual sexual cues produced reactivity like that previously demonstrated for alcohol cues, suggesting a shared or domain-general mechanism for alcohol and sexual cue reactivity in women with AUD. Riskier sexual decisions in women with AUD may be a consequence of repeatedly pairing alcohol use and sexual activity, a characteristic behavior of this population.

RESUMEN

Although the development of successful vaccines against coronaviruses may be achieved, for some individuals the immune response that they stimulate may prove to be insufficient for effective host defence. The principle that a relatively strong contact allergen will have an enhancing effect on sensitization compared with a less potent contact allergen if they are co-administered, may not, at first, appear relevant to this issue. However, this augmentation effect is thought to be due to the sharing of common or complementary pathways. Here, we briefly consider aspects of the shared and complementary pathways between skin sensitization induced by exposure to a contact allergen and the immune response to viruses, with particular reference to COVID-19. The relationship leads us to explore whether this principle, which we name here as "co-operative immune augmentation" may be extended to include viral vaccination. We consider evidence that even relatively weak contact allergens, used in vaccines for other purposes, can show enhanced sensitization, which is in keeping with a co-operative augmentation principle. Finally, we consider how the potent contact allergen diphenylcyclopropenone could be employed safely as an enhancer of vaccine responses.

RESUMEN

In this study, dogs with atopic dermatitis were separated into non-food-induced atopic dermatitis (NFIAD) group (n = 15) and food-induced atopic dermatitis (FIAD) group (n = 37) based on an elimination diet test. IgE reactivity for crude Malassezia pachydermatis (M. pachydermatis) and house dust mites (HDM) allergen extracts was investigated in the two groups using fluorometric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and intradermal skin test (IDST). Nine (60%) of the 15 dogs in NFIAD group and 6 (16%) of the 37 dogs in FIAD group showed specific IgE for M. pachydermatis (Mann-Whitney U-test, P < 0.01). By immunoblotting analysis, the pooled serum samples from dogs with IgE for M. pachydermatis showed IgE reactivity for 50 kDa protein of M. pachydermatis. Twelve (80%) of the 15 dogs in NFIAD group and 8 (22%) of the 37 dogs in FIAD group showed specific IgE for HDM (Mann-Whitney U-test, P < 0.01). In addition, the dogs in NFIAD group significantly show a positive IDST to M. pachydermatis and HDM extracts compared with the dogs in FIAD group. The results suggest that dogs with NFIAD are at increased risk of becoming sensitized to the normal commensal organism M. pachydermatis compared with dogs with FIAD, perhaps co-sensitization occurred due to an HDM protease antigen's, Der f 1 and/or Der p 1, proteolytic activity related epidermal skin barrier defects. Treatment to limit skin colonization may thus be especially important in NFIAD.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The impact of furry animal allergens on house dust mite (HDM)-induced allergic rhinitis (AR) is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the co-sensitization and cross-sensitization of furry animal allergens and assess their clinical relevance with HDM-induced AR. METHODS: We enrolled 268 patients with HDM-induced AR who were diagnosed with skin prick tests positive for dogs and/or cats. Specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) for dogs (e1) and cats (e2), their components (Can f 1-5 and Fel d 1-2), and other uncommon furry animal extracts were measured. Symptoms and quality of life were assessed with a visual analog scale (VAS). RESULTS: The VAS scores for the AR and asthma (AS; n = 166), moderate-to-severe persistent-AR (n = 132), and e1P (positive)-e2P (n = 89) groups were higher than those for single AR (n = 102), other AR classifications, and other AR sensitization profiles, respectively. The IgE positivity rates for components such as Can f 1-3 and Fel d 2 and those for rats, sheep, mice, cows, and horses were highest in e1P-e2P patients. Can f 1-4, Fel d 1, Fel d 2, or the combined allergens were positively correlated with VAS scores. AR combined with AS and sensitization to Can f 4, Fel d 1, or mice were risk factors for HDM-induced AR with VAS scores ≥5. CONCLUSIONS: Extensive cross-sensitization or co-sensitization was found between Can f 1-3, Fel d 2, or rat, sheep, mouse, cow, and horse extracts. Higher sIgE levels for Can f 1-4 and Fel d 1-2 or a higher number of furry animal allergens lead to more severe symptoms and a reduced quality of life. Combined with AS, sensitization to Can f 4, Fel d 1, or mice were risk factors for moderate-to-severe HDM-induced AR.
