RESUMEN

An ab initio evolutionary search algorithm was combined with density functional theory (DFT) calculations to predict a series of 2-D BxNy (1 < x/y ≤ 2). Particularly, B5N3 and B7N5 monolayers have sufficiently low formation enthalpy and excellent dynamic stability that make them promising for synthesis in experiments. Electronic structure calculations reveal that B5N3 and B7N5 monolayers possess an indirect band gap of 1.99 eV and a direct band gap of 2.40 eV, respectively. The calculated absorption coefficients for B5N3 and B7N5 monolayers are significantly improved in the low end of the visible region compared with that of 2-D h-BN. Moreover, our calculations reveal that both B5N3 and B7N5 monolayers have high electron carrier mobilities. The narrow band gaps, high carrier mobilities, strong near-ultraviolet absorption, and high synthesis possibility of B5N3 and B7N5 monolayers render them promising new materials for application in novel electronics and environmentally benign solar energy conversion.

RESUMEN

Inspired by the successful synthesis of alkaline-earth-metals-based electrides [Ca24Al28O64]4+(e-)4 (C12A7:e-) and [Ca2N]+:e- and high-throughput database screening results, we explore the potential for new electrides to emerge in the Sr-P system through a research approach combining ab initio evolutionary structure searches and experimental validation. Through employing an extensive evolutionary structure search and first-principles calculations, we first predict the new structures of a series of strontium phosphides: Sr5P3, Sr8P5, Sr3P2 and Sr4P3. Of these structures, we identify Sr5P3 and Sr8P5 as being potential electrides with quasi-one-dimensional (1D) and zero-dimensional (0D) character, respectively. Following these theoretical results, we present the successful synthesis of the new compound Sr5P3 and the experimental confirmation of its structure. Although density functional calculations with the generalized gradient approximation predict Sr5P3 to be a metal, electrical conductivity measurement reveal semiconducting properties characterized by a distinct band gap, which indicates that the newly synthesized Sr5P3 is an ideal one-dimensional electride with the half-filled band by unpaired electrons. In addition to presenting the novel electride Sr5P3, we discuss the implications of its semiconducting nature for 1D electrides in general and propose a mechanism for the formation of electrides with an orbital level diagram based on first-principles calculations.

RESUMEN

We propose a new formulation of the correlation energy functional derived from the transcorrelated method in use in density functional theory (TC-DFT). An effective Hamiltonian, HTC, is introduced by a similarity transformation of a many-body Hamiltonian, H, with respect to a complex function F: HTC=1FHF. It is proved that an expectation value of HTC for a normalized single Slater determinant, Dn, corresponds to the total energy: E[n] = ⟨Ψn|H|Ψn⟩/⟨Ψn|Ψn⟩ = ⟨Dn|HTC|Dn⟩ under the two assumptions: (1) The electron density nr associated with a trial wave function Ψn = DnF is v-representable and (2) Ψn and Dn give rise to the same electron density nr. This formulation, therefore, provides an alternative expression of the total energy that is useful for the development of novel correlation energy functionals. By substituting a specific function for F, we successfully derived a model correlation energy functional, which resembles the functional form of the screened exchange method. The proposed functional, named the extended screened exchange (ESX) functional, is described within two-body integrals and is parametrized for a numerically exact correlation energy of the homogeneous electron gas. The ESX functional does not contain any ingredients of (semi-)local functionals and thus is totally free from self-interactions. The computational cost for solving the self-consistent-field equation is comparable to that of the Hartree-Fock method. We apply the ESX functional to electronic structure calculations for a solid silicon, H- ion, and small atoms. The results demonstrate that the TC-DFT formulation is promising for the systematic improvement of the correlation energy functional.

RESUMEN

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are promising for applications in a wide range of fields because of their unique properties. Hydrogen boride sheets, a new 2D material recently predicted from theory, exhibit intriguing electronic and mechanical properties as well as hydrogen storage capacity. Here, we report the experimental realization of 2D hydrogen boride sheets with an empirical formula of H1B1, produced by exfoliation and complete ion-exchange between protons and magnesium cations in magnesium diboride (MgB2) with an average yield of 42.3% at room temperature. The sheets feature an sp2-bonded boron planar structure without any long-range order. A hexagonal boron network with bridge hydrogens is suggested as the possible local structure, where the absence of long-range order was ascribed to the presence of three different anisotropic domains originating from the 2-fold symmetry of the hydrogen positions against the 6-fold symmetry of the boron networks, based on X-ray diffraction, X-ray atomic pair distribution functions, electron diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, photo absorption, core-level binding energy data, infrared absorption, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The established cation-exchange method for metal diboride opens new avenues for the mass production of several types of boron-based 2D materials by countercation selection and functionalization.

RESUMEN

The energetics and electronic structures of native defects in anatase TiO2 are comprehensively studied using hybrid density functional calculations. We demonstrate that oxygen vacancies (VO) and titanium interstitials (Tii) act as shallow donors, and can form at substantial concentrations, giving rise to free electrons with carrier densities from 1011 to 1019 cm-3 under oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor conditions, respectively. The titanium vacancies (VTi), identified as deep acceptors and induced hole carriers, are incapable of fully compensating for the free electrons originating from the donor-type defects at any oxygen chemical potential. Even under extreme oxygen-rich conditions, the Fermi level, which is determined from the charge neutrality condition among charge defects, electron and hole carriers, is located 2.34 eV above the valence band maximum, indicating that p-type conductivity can never be realized under any growth conditions without external doping. This is consistent with common observations of intrinsic n-type conductivity of TiO2. At a typical annealing temperature and under a typical oxygen partial pressure, the carrier concentration is found to be approximately 5 × 1013 cm-3.

RESUMEN

The electronic structures of highly active Ag-based oxide photocatalysts Ag3AsO4 and Ag3PO4 are studied by hybrid-density functional calculations. It is revealed that Ag3AsO4 and Ag3PO4 are indirect band gap semiconductors. The Hartree-Fock mixing parameters are fitted for experimental band gaps of Ag3AsO4 (1.88 eV) and Ag3PO4 (2.43 eV). The smaller electron effective mass and the lower valence band edge of Ag3AsO4 are likely to be responsible for the superior photocatalytic oxidation reaction to Ag3PO4. The comparable lattice constant and analogous crystal structure between the two materials allow the opportunities of fine-tuning the band gap of Ag3AsxP1-xO4 using a solid-solution approach. The development of Ag3AsxP1-xO4 should be promising for the discovery of novel visible-light sensitized photocatalysts.

RESUMEN

Band-gap engineering of oxide materials is of great interest for optoelectronics, photovoltaics, and photocatalysis applications. In this study, electronic structures of perovskite oxynitrides, LaTiO2 N and SrNbO2 N, and solid solutions, (SrTiO3 )1-x (LaTiO2 N)x and (SrTiO3 )1-x (SrNbO2 N)x , are investigated using hybrid density functional calculations. Band gaps of LaTiO2 N and SrNbO2 N are much smaller than that of SrTiO3 owing to the formation of a N 2p band, which is higher in energy than the O 2p band. The valence- and conduction-band offsets of SrTiO3 /LaTiO2 N and SrTiO3 /SrNbO2 N are computed, and the adequacy for H2 evolution is analyzed by comparing the positions of the band edges with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). The band gap of (SrTiO3 )1-x (LaTiO2 N)x and (SrTiO3 )1-x (SrNbO2 N)x solid solutions are also discussed.

RESUMEN

The effects of in-plane biaxial strain on the electronic structure of a photofunctional material, single-layer SnS2, were systematically investigated using hybrid density functional calculations. The bonding diagram for the band gap was firstly proposed based on the crystal orbital overlap population analysis. The conduction band-edge of single-layer SnS2 is determined by the anti-bonding interaction between Sn-5s and S-3p orbitals, while the valence band-edge comes from the anti-bonding between the neighboring S atoms. It is found that the compressive strain not only decreases the indirect band gap of single-layer SnS2, but also effectively promotes the band-edges of the conduction band to realize the overall water splitting. Besides, the dispersion of the valence band of single-layer SnS2 becomes weaker with increasing tensile strain which is beneficial for the photo-excitation through direct transitions.

RESUMEN

Mesoporous Pd nanoparticles (MPNs) enclosed by high-index facets have been successfully prepared by taking advantage of successive oxygen adsorption and desorption caused by the oxidative etching effect. The as-prepared MPNs exhibit excellent performance toward formic acid electro-oxidation, which is due to the synergetic effect between the diffusion-feasible tubular mesochannels and the high index facets.

RESUMEN

The oxygen evolution reaction that occurs during water oxidation is of considerable importance as an essential energy conversion reaction for rechargeable metal-air batteries and direct solar water splitting. Cost-efficient ABO3 perovskites have been studied extensively because of their high activity for the oxygen evolution reaction; however, they lack stability, and an effective solution to this problem has not yet been demonstrated. Here we report that the Fe(4+)-based quadruple perovskite CaCu3Fe4O12 has high activity, which is comparable to or exceeding those of state-of-the-art catalysts such as Ba(0.5)Sr(0.5)Co(0.8)Fe(0.2)O(3-δ) and the gold standard RuO2. The covalent bonding network incorporating multiple Cu(2+) and Fe(4+) transition metal ions significantly enhances the structural stability of CaCu3Fe4O12, which is key to achieving highly active long-life catalysts.

RESUMEN

Sensitizing wide band gap photo-functional materials under visible-light irradiation is an important task for efficient solar energy conversion. Although nitrogen doping into anatase TiO2 has been extensively studied for this purpose, it is hard to increase the nitrogen content in anatase TiO2 because of the aliovalent nitrogen substituted for oxygen, leading to the formation of secondary phases or defects that hamper the migration of photoexcited charge carriers. In this paper, electronic structures of (TiO2)1-x(TaON)x (0 ≤ x ≤ 1) solid solutions, in which the stoichiometry is satisfied with the co-substitution of Ti for Ta along with O for N, are investigated within the anatase crystal structure using first-principles calculations. Our computational results show that the solid solutions have substantially narrower band gaps than TiO2, without introducing any localized energy states in the forbidden gap. In addition, in comparison with the pristine TiO2, the solid solution has a direct band gap when the content of TaON exceeds 0.25, which is advantageous to light absorption. The valence band maximum (VBM) of the solid solutions, which is mainly composed of N 2p states hybridized with O 2p, Ti 3d or Ta 5d orbitals, is higher in energy than that of pristine anatase TiO2 consisting of non-bonding O 2p states. On the other hand, incorporating TaON into TiO2 causes the formation of d-d bonding states through π interactions and substantially lowers the conduction band minimum (CBM) because of the shortened distance between some metal atoms. As a result, the anatase (TiO2)1-x(TaON)x is expected to become a promising visible-light absorber. In addition, some atomic configurations are found to possess exceptionally narrow band gaps.

RESUMEN

The effects of interlayer lone-pair interactions on the electronic structure of SnO are explored using density-functional theory. Our comprehensive study reveals that the band gap of SnO opens with the increase in the interlayer Sn-Sn distance. The effect is rationalized by the character of band edges which consist of bonding and anti-bonding states from interlayer lone pair interactions. The band edges for several nanosheets and strained double-layer SnO are estimated. We conclude that the double-layer SnO is a promising material for visible-light driven photocatalysts for hydrogen evolution.

RESUMEN

The surface electronic structure and CO-oxidation activity of Pt and Pt alloys, Pt3T (T = Ti, Hf, Ta, Pt), were investigated. At temperatures below 538 K, the CO-oxidation activities of Pt and Pt3T increased in the order Pt < Pt3Ti < Pt3hHf < Pt3Ta. The center-of-gravity of the Pt d-band (the d-band center) of Pt and Pt3T was theoretically calculated to follow the trend Pt3Ti < Pt3Ta < Pt3Hf < Pt. The CO-oxidation activity showed a volcano-type dependence on the d-band center, where Pt3Ta exhibited a maximum in activity. Theoretical calculations demonstrated that the adsorption energy of CO on the catalyst surface monotonically decreases with the lowering of the d-band center because of diminished hybridization of the surface d-band and the lowest-unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) of CO. The observed volcano-type correlation between the d-band center and the CO oxidation activity is rationalized in terms of the CO adsorption energy, which counterbalances the surface coverage by CO and the rate of CO oxidation.

RESUMEN

Development of a new method to synthesize nanoporous metal oxides with highly crystallized frameworks is of great interest because of their wide use in practical applications. Here we demonstrate a thermal decomposition of metal-cyanide hybrid coordination polymers (CPs) to prepare nanoporous metal oxides. During the thermal treatment, the organic units (carbon and nitrogen) are completely removed, and only metal contents are retained to prepare nanoporous metal oxides. The original nanocube shapes are well-retained even after the thermal treatment. When both Fe and Co atoms are contained in the precursors, nanoporous Fe-Co oxide with a highly oriented crystalline framework is obtained. On the other hand, when nanoporous Co oxide and Fe oxide are obtained from Co- and Fe-contacting precursors, their frameworks are amorphous and/or poorly crystallized. Single-crystal-like nanoporous Fe-Co oxide shows a stable magnetic property at room temperature compared to poly-crystalline metal oxides. We further extend this concept to prepare nanoporous metal oxides with hollow interiors. Core-shell heterostructures consisting of different metal-cyanide hybrid CPs are prepared first. Then the cores are dissolved by chemical etching using a hydrochloric acid solution (i.e., the cores are used as sacrificial templates), leading to the formation of hollow interiors in the nanocubes. These hollow nanocubes are also successfully converted to nanoporous metal oxides with hollow interiors by thermal treatment. The present approach is entirely different from the surfactant-templating approaches that traditionally have been utilized for the preparation of mesoporous metal oxides. We believe the present work proves a new way to synthesize nanoporous metal oxides with controlled crystalline frameworks and architectures.

RESUMEN

Although compositional tuning of metal nanoparticles (NPs) has been extensively investigated, possible control of the catalytic performance through bulk-structure tuning is surprisingly overlooked. Here we report that the bulk structure of intermetallic ZrPt3 NPs can be engineered by controlled annealing and their catalytic performance is significantly enhanced as the result of bulk-structural transformation. Chemical reduction of organometallic precursors yielded the desired ZrPt3 NPs with a cubic FCC-type structure (c-ZrPt3 NPs). The c-ZrPt3 NPs were then transformed to a different phase of ZrPt3 with a hexagonal structure (h-ZrPt3 NPs) by annealing at temperatures between 900 and 1000 °C. The h-ZrPt3 NPs exhibited higher catalytic activity and long-term stability than either the c-ZrPt3 NPs or commercial Pt/C NPs toward the electro-oxidation of ethanol. Theoretical calculations have elucidated that the enhanced activity of the h-ZrPt3 NPs is attributed to the increased surface energy, whereas the stability of the catalyst is retained by the lowered bulk-free-energy.

RESUMEN

A copper(II)-oxide-based exhaust catalyst exhibits better activity than Pt- and Rh-nanoparticle catalysts in NO remediation at 175 °C. Following theoretical design, the CuO catalyst is rationally prepared; CuO nanoplates bearing a maximized amount of the active {001} facet are arranged in interleaved layers. A field test using a commercial gasoline engine demonstrates the ability of the catalyst to remove NO from the exhaust of small vehicles.

RESUMEN

A mixed-valence tin oxide, (Sn(2+))2(Sn(4+))O4, was synthesized via a hydrothermal route. The Sn3O4 material consisted of highly crystalline {110} flexes. The Sn3O4 material, when pure platinum (Pt) was used as a co-catalyst, significantly catalyzed water-splitting in aqueous solution under illumination of visible light (λ > 400 nm), whereas neither Sn(2+)O nor Sn(4+)O2 was active toward the reaction. Theoretical calculations have demonstrated that the co-existence of Sn(2+) and Sn(4+) in Sn3O4 leads to a desirable band structure for photocatalytic hydrogen evolution from water solution. Sn3O4 has great potential as an abundant, cheap, and environmentally benign solar-energy conversion catalyst.

RESUMEN

Deep impurity states associated with a substitutional nitrogen at an oxygen site (N(O)) are believed to be the source of the visible-light absorption of nitrogen-doped titanium dioxide (TiO(2)). Our comprehensive study using density functional theory (DFT) plus onsite Coulomb interaction (U) reveals that a titanium atom at an interstitial site (Ti(i)) is highly mobile and strongly binds with N(O). Hybridizations of N p with Ti d states of Ti(i) give rise to a new band at the valence band edge, eliminating the hole-trapping centers originated from the deep N(O) states. The suggested mechanism explains the photocatalytic oxidation reactions as well as the visible-light absorption observed on N-doped anatase TiO(2).

RESUMEN

We used hybrid density-functional calculations to clarify the effect of substituting chromium for titanium (Cr(Ti)) on photocatalytic activities of Cr-doped SrTiO(3). A singly negative Cr(Ti)⁻, which is relevant to a lower oxidation state of Cr, is advantageous for the visible light absorption without forming electron trapping centers, while other charge states are inactive for the photocatalytic reaction. Stabilizing the desirable charge state (Cr(Ti)⁻) is feasible by shifting the Fermi level towards the conduction band. Our theory sheds light on the photocatalytic properties of metal-doped semiconductors.

RESUMEN

A strategy of reaction-environment modulation was employed to change the surface property of a semiconductor photocatalyst to enhance its photocatalytic performance. Surface alkalinization induced by a high alkalinity of the solution environment significantly shifted the surface energy band of a SrTiO(3) photocatalyst to a more negative level, supplying a strong potential for H(2)O reduction and consequently promoting the photocatalytic efficiency of H(2) evolution. This mechanism is also applicable for visible-light-sensitive La,Cr-codoped SrTiO(3) photocatalyst, which hence, could achieve a high apparent quantum efficiency of 25.6% for H(2) evolution in CH(3)OH aqueous solution containing 5 M NaOH at an incident wavelength of 425 ± 12 nm.
