OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of staining, glazing, and polishing on the survival probability of monolithic crowns manufactured with preshaded stabilized zirconia with 5 mol% of yttrium oxide (5Y-TZP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Monolithic crowns in the shape of an upper canine (1.5 mm of thickness) were manufactured by CAD/CAM, adhesively cemented on metallic foundation, and divided into 6 groups (n = 21): C (control), S (staining), G (glazing), P (polishing), SG (staining and glazing), and SP (staining and polishing). The survival probability was determined by step-stress accelerated life testing with a load applied to the palatine concavity of the crown. First, the specimens were subjected to a single-load to fracture test (SLF) and next to the fatigue test (5 Hz, thermocycling immersed in water varying 5-55°C), including the light (n = 9), moderate (n = 6), and aggressive (n = 3) loading profiles (load ranged between 20% and 60% of SLF). The survival probability was calculated considering the cycles for failure (CFF) and fatigue failure load (FFL) and illustrated using a Kaplan-Meier graph. The comparison among groups was performed using a Log-Rank test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: The mean value of SLF was 586.7 N. There was no difference among groups in survival probability, considering CFF and FFL. CONCLUSION: Staining, glazing, and polishing can be performed safely without damaging the mechanical behavior of 5Y-TZP monolithic crowns. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Staining is used to characterize and improve the esthetic of zirconia monolithic crowns. It can be used to reproduce the color gradient in the cervical region of the crown and pigmented grooves. This study showed that staining, glazing, and polishing did not affect the survival probability and the use of finishing procedures (glazing or polishing) after staining did not improve the survival probability of zirconia monolithic crowns.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effect of polishing and bleaching on the recovery of lightness, color, whiteness, and relative translucency parameter (RTP) in CAD/CAM materials and changes in these properties when another staining in coffee was conducted after the treatments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Disks of Lava Ultimate (LU), Vita Enamic (VE), IPS Empress CAD (EMP), IPS e.max CAD (EMAX), and Vita Suprinity (VS) were (1) not treated (control), (2) polished with Proxyt or (3) Ceramisté, (4) bleached with Opalescence PF or (5) Whiteness HP Blue, and (6) air polished with Clinpro Prophy Powder. CIE L*a*b* color coordinates were registered at baseline (R0), after staining with coffee for 30 min daily for 36.5 days and treatment (R1), and after another staining (R2). Differences (R1-R0 and R2-R0) in lightness (ΔL00), color (ΔE00), RTP (ΔRTP00), and whiteness (ΔWID) were evaluated by mixed repeated measures ANOVA and 95% confidence intervals (α = 0.05) and interpreted in function of their respective 50:50% PT and AT thresholds. Topography was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). RESULTS: In LU, Opalescence PF and Proxyt decreased Δ L 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta L}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , Δ E 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta E}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {\mathrm{R}}_0\right)} $$ , and ΔWI D R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta \mathrm{WI}}_{\mathrm{D}\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ and showed lower Δ L 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta L}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , Δ E 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta E}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , and ΔWI D R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta \mathrm{WI}}_{\mathrm{D}\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ . In VE, all treatments decreased Δ L 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta L}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , Δ E 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta E}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , and ΔWI D R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta \mathrm{WI}}_{\mathrm{D}\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , whereas Δ L 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta L}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , Δ E 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta E}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , and ΔWI D R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta \mathrm{WI}}_{\mathrm{D}\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ were lower in Opalescence PF than in the control group. In both moments, ΔE00 and ΔWID in EMP (also ΔL00) and EMAX were higher in Opalescence PF than in the control group, from which the other treatments did not differ in R1-R0. In EMP, Δ E 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta E}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ in Whiteness HP Blue (also Δ L 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta L}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ ) and Proxyt were also higher in comparison to the control group and in VS, Ceramisté decreased Δ L 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta L}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , Δ E 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta E}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , and Δ R T P 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ \varDelta RT{P}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ , whereas Opalescence PF increased ΔRTP 00 R 1 - R 0 $$ {\Delta \mathrm{RTP}}_{00\left({R}_1\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ . Δ E 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta E}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ of Ceramisté and ΔWI D R 2 - R 0 $$ {\Delta \mathrm{WI}}_{\mathrm{D}\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ and Δ R T P 00 R 2 - R 0 $$ \varDelta RT{P}_{00\left({R}_2\hbox{--} {R}_0\right)} $$ of Proxyt were lower than those of the control group. CONCLUSIONS: The most suitable treatment to recover the lightness, color, whiteness, and RTP without changing these properties after another coffee exposure is material-dependent. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Although the effectiveness of the treatment was material-dependent, Proxyt was the only treatment that promoted clinically acceptable changes for both LU and VE, while for purely ceramic materials, this condition was observed with Ceramisté and Clinpro Prophy Powder.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the effect of toothbrushing cycles on surface roughness (Ra), gloss (GU), and morphology of two zirconia finishing and polishing protocols. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An ultra-translucent zirconia disc was sectioned into rectangular plates (12 mm × 7 mm × 3 mm) and divided into two groups according to the polishing and finishing system used (diamond rubber abrasive/DRA or glazing/GLA). Bovine enamel (BEN) plates with the same dimensions were used as a Control. Specimens of zirconia and enamel were analyzed for Ra and GU (n = 11) and surface morphology by scanning electron microscopy (n = 3) before toothbrushing (baseline) and after 15,000 and 30,000 toothbrushing cycles. Ra and GU data were analyzed by ANOVA two-way and post-hoc Tukey's test (α = 0.05), while the surface morphology was analyzed qualitatively. RESULTS: The Ra decreased significantly after 30,000 toothbrushing cycles for DRA and GLA zirconia ceramics. DRA showed a higher GU at the baseline, after 15,000 and 30,000 toothbrushing cycles than GLA and BEN. Toothbrushing polished the zirconia, creating a smooth surface, while no changes were observed for BEN. CONCLUSIONS: The increase in toothbrushing cycles (30,000) changed the surface roughness of DRA and GLA zirconia ceramics. DRA zirconia presented the highest GU, which did not change with toothbrushing.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of airborne particle abrasion (APA) on micro-tensile bond strength (µTBS) to dentin using different air-abrasion/polishing powders. METHODS: The bonding effectiveness of G2 Bond Universal (G2B), used in etch-and-rinse (E&R) and self-etch mode (SE), was tested on bur-cut dentin and dentin air abraded/polished using six different powders (aluminum oxide 29 µm (AO29) and 53 µm (AO53), aluminum trihydroxide (AT), sodium bicarbonate (SB), sodium bicarbonate soft (SBsoft) and bioactive glass (BG); Velopex). Adhesive-composite resin specimens were immersed in distilled water at 37 °C for one week and cut into microspecimens. Half of the specimens were subjected to 50,000 thermocycles (aged). Immediate and aged µTBS to dentin were measured. Statistical analysis was performed using linear mixed-effects (LME) modeling (p < 0.05). RESULTS: Comparing the aged bond strengths to air-abraded/polished dentin with bur-cut dentin, pretreatment with SB and SBsoft in combination with G2B used in E&R mode, and BG air polishing in combination with both application modes (E&R, SE), resulted in a significantly higher bond strength. Dentin bond strength was only significantly lower when air abraded with AO29 and using G2B in SE mode. Aging did not significantly influence bond strength for both application modes (E&R, SE), except for AO29 and AT-treated dentin, where bond strengths decrea sed significantly using G2B in SE mode. In general, G2B reached significantly higher bond strengths on air-abraded/polished dentin in E&R mode than in SE mode. CONCLUSION: Air-abrasion/polishing did not impair dentin bond strength using G2B, except when dentin was air abraded with AO29 and using G2B in SE mode. Air polishing positively influenced the bond strength to dentin in specific groups. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: APA is safe concerning bonding to dentin. The E&R application mode is preferred using G2B as adhesive on air-abraded/polished dentin. Air polishing with BG positively influenced dentin bond strength for both application methods.

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the surface roughness among 3 types of glass ionomers (GI) before (no polishing) and after polishing with three different materials. Methods: 20 discs for each GI group were obtained (A-Ionolux; B-IonoStar Plus; C-Ketac). Those groups were subdivided according to finishing and polishing: subgroups 1 (control) - no polishing, 2 - polishing with prophylactic brush and pumice paste, 3 - Enhance tips with water, and 4 - Sof-Lex system with Easy Glaze and polymerization. For each disc face, the total distance analyzed was 2.88cm (6x48mm). Then, the roughness was compared using the Kruskal-Wallis with Bonferroni test, with significant data if p<0.05. Results: The mean of roughness within Group A was lower for subgroup 4 (1.07±0.54 µm) and higher for subgroup 2 (2.33±1.17 µm). Within group B, B4 had the lowest mean of roughness (0.93±0.38 µm) and B2 (1.24 ± 0.78 µm) the highest roughness. Within group C, Group C4 had the lowest mean roughness value (0.84±0.54 µm), and C3 had the highest mean (2.48±1.05 µm). After polishing, subgroup 4 had the general lowest values for surface roughness (mean Ra 0.95), followed by subgroup 1 (Ra=1.27), subgroup 2 (Ra=1.89), and higher values for subgroup 3. All intragroup analysis for A, B, and C were statistically significant. Group A presented the highest roughness (p<0.05), and no statistically significant evidence existed between groups B and C (p>0.05). Conclusion: The reduction of the roughness of the materials is dependent on their composition and the polishing and finishing techniques applied.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of two finishing techniques, glazing or polishing, in comparison with the as-cut condition, on the biaxial-flexural-strength (BFS) of a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate ceramic (ZLS). Cylinders were milled from CAD/CAM blocks and sliced to obtain disc-shaped specimens (ISO6872:2015). Polished and glazed specimens were processed following the manufacturer's instructions. Thirty-three specimens were obtained for each condition and microstructural and BFS/fractographic characterizations were performed. BFS and roughness data were analyzed using Weibull statistics and ANOVA one-way with Tukey post-hoc test, respectively. While a rougher surface was observed for as-cut specimens, smoother surfaces were observed for polished and glazed ZLS at microscopical evaluation and confirmed through surface-roughness evaluation. X-ray spectra depicted a glass phase for all groups and characteristic metasilicate, lithium disilicate, and lithium phosphate peaks for the as-cut and polished specimens. Glazed specimens showed higher characteristic strength than polished and as-cut specimens, which did not differ significantly. While higher Weibull-modulus was observed for the polished than for the as-cut specimens, no statistically significant differences were noted between glazed and polished, and between glazed and as-cut specimens. ZLS presents higher strength when glazed, and polishing increases the structural reliability of the material relative to the as-cut condition. Both finishing techniques reduced surface roughness similarly.

OBJECTIVES: This laboratory study evaluated the effect of three polishing systems on the surface roughness and gloss of resin composites. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty specimens (6 mm Ø × 8 mm) were fabricated from each of three resin composites: Z 350 XT (nanofill), Harmonize (nanohybrid), and Estelite Omega (supranonofill). All specimens were photopolymerized using a multi-peak LED curing unit (VALO-Standard mode), having a exitance irradiance of approximately 1000 mW/cm2 against a polyester strip (PS). 2 mm was then removed from the irradiated end (finished) using #320 abrasive paper (F). Specimens were then randomly polished (P) using a one-step (1S) (OneGloss), two-step (2S) (EVE Diacomp Twist Basic CA), or 3-step (3S) (Astropol P) system (n = 10). For PS, F, and P groups, surface roughness (Ra) was measured using a surface roughness tester, and surface gloss was measured with a glossmeter. For each specimen, the percent recovery to the PS value (%R) of surface roughness and surface gloss were calculated. Data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA, followed by Tukey's test. Surface roughness and gloss values were submitted to Pearson's correlation test (α = 0.05). All statistical testing was performed using a pre-set alpha of 0.05. RESULTS: The interaction term [resin composite × polishing system] was significant for both surface roughness (p = 0.001) and gloss (p = 0.0001). For all resin composites, the 2S and 3S systems provided a higher %R of surface roughness and gloss compared to those of the 1S system. There was a negative correlation between surface roughness and gloss, but only a few combinations showed strong correlations. CONCLUSIONS: The 2S and 3S polishing systems provided surfaces having greater smoothness and gloss compared to the 1S system. The ability to recover surface roughness and gloss was dependent on type of resin composite filler classification. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The 3S and 2S polishing systems were more effective in achieving PS values than was the 1S system for all tested resin composites. However, individual polishing systems performed differently depending on type of resin composite.

RESUMO

Antivenom therapy is a critical intervention for treating the more than 5.000.000 envenomation accidents that occur each year around the world. These immunotherapeutic drugs are mostly produced following techniques developed more than fifty years ago with minor changes. Aggregate content has been described as one of the main causes of early adverse effects after intravenous administration of antivenoms. In this work we propose the introduction of a final polishing step to traditional antivenom manufacturing processes aimed at lowering the aggregate content in the final product. The refinement step proposed in this work is based on the selective capture of immunoglobulin aggregates by a cation exchange monolithic stationary phase. We show that this media can effectively remove aggregates in the final product under isotonic ion-strength and mildly acidic conditions following a negative chromatography strategy, thus making it a useful technique for producing higher quality products.

Even after more than six decades of dental composite invention (1962), there is still controversial information about the time in which composite restorations should be polished in order to avoid marginal gap formation at the tooth-composite interface. The aim of the present study was to analyze the influence of adhesive strategy, the type of dental composite, and polishing time on marginal gap formation (%MG) at the tooth-composite interface. Class I-like cavities were hybridized with a universal adhesive system (Single Bond Universal) through two strategies: selective enamel etching (SEE) or self-etching mode (SEM). Cavities were filled with two types of dental composites: nanofilled (Z350) or bulk fill (Filtek One Bulk Fill-ONE), and polishing was performed immediately or delayed for 7 days (n = 5). %MG was evaluated by using a 3D laser confocal microscope. As flexural modulus (FM) and degree of conversion (DC%) are determinants of marginal integrity in dental composite restorations, these properties were evaluated for both composites. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). Cavities hybridized following the SEE strategy presented lower %MG (p < 0.05). Z350 showed higher %MG than ONE (p < 0.05). There was no difference in %MG between the polishing times when the SEE strategy was used (p > 0.05). Z350 presented higher FM than ONE (p < 0.05). DC% was found to be not significant (p > 0.05). The results suggest that selective enamel etching (SEE) is a better strategy for producing less %MG in composite restorations with enamel margins irrespective of the time in which the restoration is polished.

Considerando o uso de brocas para remoção da resina residual após descolagem do braquete e a possibilidade de injúrias à superfície do esmalte após o uso dessas brocas, este trabalho teve como objetivo realizar um estudo experimental, para avaliar a variação do aspecto superficial do esmalte de forma qualitativa, por meio da avaliação com imagens topográficas do esmalte dentário, utilizando-se a Microscopia Eletrônica de Varredura (MEV), a qual permitiu ilustrar e avaliar a superfície do esmalte após a fase de polimento final, realizada por dois métodos: taça de borracha ou escova Robinson. Foram utilizados 25 dentes pré-molares humanos, obtidos a partir de exodontias em pacientes que procuraram voluntariamente o curso de Residência em Cirurgia da Clínica Odontológica Universitária da Universidade Estadual de Londrina. Os dentes foram divididos em quatro grupos: A, B, C e D, contendo 6 dentes cada, de acordo com as brocas utilizadas para a remoção do remanescente adesivo e o polimento escolhido, além de um dente como "controle". Foi avaliada a rugosidade superficial do esmalte após a remoção da resina e a superfície do esmalte após o polimento com as duas opções apresentadas. Os resultados mostraram que, por observação e inspeção, as brocas removeram a resina residual de todos os dentes, porém, causaram riscos e ranhuras, como evidenciado nas imagens em MEV. Concluiu-se que não houve diferença estatística entre os métodos de polimento e que ambos foram importantes para a redução das marcas abrasivas, proporcionando uma superfície mais lisa do esmalte.


Considering the use of specific burs to remove residual resin after bracket debonding and the possibility of injuries to the dental enamel after using these burs, this study aimed to verify the variation in the enamel surface appearance in a qualitative way and evaluation with topographic images of the dental enamel. The use of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) allowed to illustrate and evaluate the enamel surface after the final polishing phase using two methods: rubber cup or Robinson brush. Twenty-five human premolar teeth were obtained from extractions in patients who voluntarily sought the Oral Maxillofacial Surgery Residency at the Dental School from the State University of Londrina; the teeth were divided into four groups A, B, C and D containing 6 teeth each according to the burs used to remove the remaining adhesive and the chosen polishing, in addition to one tooth as a "control". Dental enamel surface roughness was evaluated after resin removal and enamel surface after polishing with the two methods presented. The results showed that by observation and inspection, the burs removed residual resin from all teeth, however, caused scratches and grooves as evidenced in the SEM images. Based on the results, there was no statistical difference between the polishing methods, and both were important for the reduction of abrasive marks and provided a smoother enamel surface.

During the manufacture of ceramic restorations there is an important step of finishing and polishing and the effects of different types of these procedures on the surface characteristics of ceramics are not known for sure. AIM: To evaluate the effects of various surface treatments and immersion in coloring substances on the roughness, microhardness, and color stability of CAD-CAM monolithic ceramics. MATERIALS AND METHOD: The ceramics used were lithium disilicate reinforced with zirconium dioxide (Suprinity), lithium disilicate (E.max) or leucite (Empress). They were subjected to two surface treatments: glazing (group G) (n=20) or mechanical polishing (group P) (n=20). Then they were divided into two subgroups (n=10) to be treated with the staining substance (coffee or water). Roughness, microhardness and color were measured before and after treatment. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and multiple comparisons were performed with Tukey tests at 5% significance level. RESULTS: Roughness was lower in all tested ceramics after polishing than after glazing. Microhardness was the same for polished and glazed E.max, higher in glazed than polished Empress, and higher in polished than glazed Suprinity. Analysis of the effects of glazing and polishing on the individual ceramics showed that the ΔE2000 and ΔWID data of the E.max ceramic subjected to polishing showed greater change. Mechanical polishing is a good option for surface treatment of monolithic ceramics. CONCLUSION: Glazing was inferior and less satisfactory than polishing. Glazing generates changes that can lead to color instability.


Durante a confecção de restaurações cerâmicas existe uma importante etapa dos procedimentos de acabamento e polimento. Os efeitos de diferentes tipos desses procedimentos nas características superficiais das cerâmicas não são conhecidos com certeza. Objetivo: Avaliar os efeitos de vários tratamentos de superfície e imersão em substâncias corantes na rugosidade, microdureza e estabilidade de cor de cerâmicas monolíticas CAD-CAM. Materiais e Métodos: As cerâmicas utilizadas foram dissilicato de lítio reforçado com dióxido de zircônio (Suprinity), dissilicato de lítio (E.max) ou leucita (Empress). Foram submetidos a dois tratamentos de superfície: glazeamento (grupo G) (n=20) ou polimento mecânico (grupo P) (n=20). Em seguida, foram divididos em dois subgrupos (n=10) para serem tratados com a substância corante (café ou água). Rugosidade, microdureza e cor foram medidas antes e após o tratamento. Os dados foram submetidos à análise de variância e as comparações múltiplas foram realizadas com testes de Tukey ao nível de 5% de significância. Resultados: A rugosidade foi menor em todas as cerâmicas testadas após o polimento do que após o glazeamento. A microdureza foi a mesma para o E.max polido e vidrado, maior no Empress vidrado do que no polido, e maior no Suprinity polido do que no vidrado. A análise dos efeitos do esmaltação e polimento nas cerâmicas individuais mostrou que os dados ΔE2000 e ΔWID da cerâmica E.max submetida ao polimento apresentaram maior alteração. O polimento mecânico é uma boa opção para o tratamento superficial de cerâmicas monolíticas. Conclusão: A aplicação do glazing foi inferior e menos satisfatório que o polimento, gerando alterações que podem levar à instabilidade da cor.

Objetivo: avaliar in vitro o polimento sobre resina acrílica quimicamente ativada (RAQA), por meio da rugosidade de superfície (Ra). Materiais e Método: Foram confeccionadas 40 amostras de RAQA, com dimensões de 10 a 10 x 2 mm, e foram divididas em quatro grupos (n=10): ausência do acabamento (AA); Ausência de polimento (AP); Polimento químico (PQ); Polimento com borrachas siliconadas + Escovas (PM). Os espécimes foram avaliados no quanto a rugosidade média (Ra) antes e após o envelhecimento em água destilada em uma estufa por 60 dias. Três medições de Ra (µm), na horizontal foram realizadas e calculada uma média para cada espécime. Os dados foram analisados de forma descritiva e inferencial, ANOVA de medidas repetidas e teste de Tukey com nível de significância de 5%. Resultados: Inicialmente, o grupo AA teve os menores valores de Ra e o grupo AP os maiores valores de rugosidade, com média e desvio padrão respectivamente 0,17 (±0,11) e 0,52 (±0,10). Após o envelhecimento, o grupo AA teve as menores médias e o grupo PQ os maiores valores de Ra, sendo 0,38 (±0,20) e 1,33 (±0,32), respectivamente. Os resultados evidenciaram diferença estatística significante quando as amostras foram submetidas ao acabamento com brocas. Conclusão: A RAQA necessita de polimento após acabamento com brocas, uma vez que a ausência de polimento comprometerá a lisura de superfície do material.(AU)


Objective: to evaluate in vitro polishing on chemically activated acrylic resin (RAQA), using surface roughness (Ra). Materials and Method: 40 RAQA samples were made, measuring 10 to 10 x 2 mm, and divided into four groups (n=10): absence of finishing (AA); Lack of polishing (AP); Chemical polishing (PQ); Polishing with silicone rubbers + Brushes (PM). The specimens were evaluated for their average roughness (Ra) before and after aging in distilled water in an oven for 60 days. Three horizontal Ra (µm) measurements were taken and an average was calculated for each specimen. Data were analyzed descriptively and inferentially, using repeated measures ANOVA and Tukey test with a significance level of 5%. Results: Initially, the AA group had the lowest Ra values and the AP group the highest roughness values, with mean and standard deviation respectively 0.17 (±0.11) and 0.52 (±0.10). After aging, the AA group had the lowest averages and the PQ group the highest Ra values, being 0.38 (±0.20) and 1.33 (±0.32), respectively. The results showed a statistically significant difference when the samples were finished with drills. Conclusion: RAQA requires polishing after finishing with drills, as the lack of polishing will compromise the surface smoothness of the material.(AU)

ABSTRACT During the manufacture of ceramic restorations there is an important step of finishing and polishing and the effects of different types of these procedures on the surface characteristics of ceramics are not known for sure. Aim: To evaluate the effects of various surface treatments and immersion in coloring substances on the roughness, microhardness, and color stability of CAD-CAM monolithic ceramics. Materials and Method: The ceramics used were lithium disilicate reinforced with zirconium dioxide (Suprinity), lithium disilicate (E.max) or leucite (Empress). They were subjected to two surface treatments: glazing (group G) (n=20) or mechanical polishing (group P) (n=20). Then they were divided into two subgroups (n=10) to be treated with the staining substance (coffee or water). Roughness, microhardness and color were measured before and after treatment. Data were subjected to analysis of variance and multiple comparisons were performed with Tukey tests at 5% significance level. Results: Roughness was lower in all tested ceramics after polishing than after glazing. Microhardness was the same for polished and glazed E.max, higher in glazed than polished Empress, and higher in polished than glazed Suprinity. Analysis of the effects of glazing and polishing on the individual ceramics showed that the ΔE2000 and ΔWID data of the E.max ceramic subjected to polishing showed greater change. Mechanical polishing is a good option for surface treatment of monolithic ceramics. Conclusion: Glazing was inferior and less satisfactory than polishing. Glazing generates changes that can lead to color instability.


RESUMO Durante a confecção de restaurações cerâmicas existe uma importante etapa dos procedimentos de acabamento e polimento. Os efeitos de diferentes tipos desses procedimentos nas características superficiais das cerâmicas não são conhecidos com certeza. INTRODUCTION: Adjustments with diamond burs on the ceramic surface can affect its roughness and decrease flexural strength. This study evaluated the effect of polishing or glazing on the surface roughness and biaxial flexural strength of a zirconia-reinforced lithium silicate glass-ceramic upon adjustment with diamond burs. METHODS: Seventy disks were prepared according to ISO 6872 and divided into seven groups (n = 10) according to different adjustments and finishing processes. Surface roughness was measured prior to biaxial flexural strength testing. The topography was analyzed using an atomic force microscope , fracture markings were identified using a stereomicroscope and representative specimens were analyzed using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS: The use of diamond burs significantly increased the surface roughness and decreased the strength of the evaluated ceramic (p⟨0.05). Polishing reduced the ceramic's roughness but resulted in flexural strength similar to that of the groups with wear (p⟩0.05). The glaze-treated specimens showed flexural strength statistically similar to the control group (p>0.05) but higher roughness, similar to those with wear. CONCLUSIONS: Polishing reduced the surface roughness but did not affect the biaxial flexural strength of the ZLS ceramic. At the same time, the application of glaze after wear increased the strength.

Aim: The surface roughness of dental restorations can decrease resin durability, since it leads to its deterioration, color variation, and loss of gloss. Therefore, the aim was to assess the surface roughness of nanoparticle resin composites, subjected to two different polishing systems. Materials and Methods: This longitudinal in vitro experimental study consisted of 32 resin specimens made according to ISO 4049-2019 and divided equally into four groups: A1: Palfique LX5 / Sof-Lex, A2: Palfique LX5 / Super Snap, B1: Filtek Z350 XT / Sof-Lex, and B2: Filtek Z350 XT / Super Snap. The samples were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h. Surface roughness was measured with a digital roughness tester, both before and after the polishing procedure. The data were analyzed with the Student's t-test for related samples, and with the inter-subject ANOVA test with two factors; considering significance at P < 0.05. Results: The surface roughness of Palfique LX5 resin with the Sof-lex system was 0.330 (CI: 0.282-0.378 µm) and 0.170 (CI: 0.087-0.253 µm) before and after polishing, respectively. With the Super Snap system, values of 0.448 (CI: 0.346-0.549 µm) and 0.206 (CI: 0.130-0.282 µm) were obtained before and after polishing, respectively. For the Filtek Z350 XT resin, the surface roughness obtained with the Sof-lex system was 0.353 (CI: 0.278-0.427 µm) and 0.134 (CI: 0.095-0.172 µm) before and after polishing, respectively. With the Super Snap system, values of 0.334 (CI: 0.247-0.421 µm) and 0.171 (CI: 0.122-0.221 µm) were obtained before and after polishing, respectively. Surface roughness did not show significant differences in all groups assessed both before (P = 0.068) and after (P = 0.335) polishing. However, before and after the application of the polishing systems, all groups significantly decreased their surface roughness (P < 0.05). Further, when comparing this decrease among all groups, no significant differences were observed (P = 0.437). Conclusion: The surface roughness of the Filtek Z350 XT and Palfique LX5 nanoparticle resin composites showed no significant differences when using the Sof-lex and Super Snap polishing systems. However, both polishing systems significantly decreased the surface roughness of the nanoparticulated resins, with this decrease being similar in all groups.

The use of chlorhexidine-based mouthwashes on resin composites with rough surfaces can cause discoloration which compromises the esthetic of patients. The present study aimed to evaluate the in vitro color stability of Forma (Ultradent Products, Inc., South Jordan), Tetric N-Ceram (Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein) and Filtek Z350XT (3M, ESPE, St. Paul, MN, USA) resin composites, with and without polishing, after being immersed in a 0.12% chlorhexidine (CHX)-based mouthwash at different times. The present in vitro experimental and longitudinal study used 96 nanohybrid resin composite blocks (Forma, Tetric N-Ceram and Filtek Z350XT) 8 mm in diameter and 2 mm thick, evenly distributed. Each resin composite group was divided into two subgroups (n = 16) with and without polishing and then immersed in a 0.12% CHX-based mouthwash for 7, 14, 21 and 28 days. Color measurements were performed with a calibrated digital spectrophotometer. Nonparametric tests were used to compare independent (Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis) and related (Friedman) measures. In addition, the Bonferroni post hoc correction was used considering a significance level of p < 0.05. All polished and unpolished resin composites presented color variation < 3.3 when immersed for up to 14 days in 0.12% CHX-based mouthwash. The polished resin composite with the lowest color variation (ΔE) values over time was Forma, and the one with the highest values was Tetric N-Ceram. When comparing the color variation (ΔE) over time, it was observed that the three resin composites, with and without polishing, presented a significant change (p < 0.001), although these changes in color variation (ΔE) were evident from 14 days between each color acquisition (p < 0.05). The unpolished Forma and Filtek Z350XT resin composites showed significantly more color variation than the same polished ones at all times when immersed in a 0.12% CHX-based mouthwash for 30 s daily. In addition, every 14 days, all three resin composites with and without polishing showed a significant color change, while, every 7 days, color stability was maintained. All the resin composites showed clinically acceptable color stability when exposed for up to 14 days to the above-mentioned mouthwash.

El color de las restauraciones se considera una de las características más exigidas por los pacientes, cuyo éxito final dependerá de mantenerse en el tiempo, sin sufrir alteraciones. El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar la estabilidad de color que experimentan las resinas al ser sumergidas en una sustancia pigmentante en función al factor tiempo y al tipo de pulido final realizado. Estudio experimental in vitro de tres resinas de nanopartículas: Filtek Z-350 XT® (3M), Brillant NG® (Coltene), Tetric N-Ceram® (Vivadent) donde se comparó la estabilidad de color al ser sumergidas en café. Se confeccionaron 120 discos de resinas (color esmalte A3) divididos posteriormente en dos grupos: Grupo 1 protocolo habitual de pulido Grupo 2: protocolo habitual más sellador fotocurable Biscover® (Bisco). Las muestras fueron almacenadas en agua destilada en estufa a 37° durante 24 hs para su hidratación. Se registró el color utilizando el colorímetro Kónica Minolta®. Posteriormente se sumergieron las muestras en café, y se tomó nuevamente el color a las 24 hs y a los 7 días. Los datos fueron analizados estadísticamente mediante análisis de varianza y test de compación de Tukey. Se observó que la resina que más se pigmentó en el grupo 1 correspondió a la resina Filteck Z-350 con DE: 4,68 a las 24 hs y DE: 5,53 a los 7 días. Al analizar el grupo 2 las tres resinas se mantuvieron en valores bajos de DE: 0,96 a 1,42 en ambos períodos. Al sumergir las resinas en una sustancia pigmentante, la alteración del color se va produciendo en función del tiempo. Sin embargo, el uso complementario de un sellador fotocurable como pulido mejora significativamente la estabilidad de color en estos materiales, factores que el clínico debe tener en cuenta para lograr el éxito de sus restauraciones.


The color of the restorations is considered one of the characteristics most demanded by patients, whose final success will depend on being maintained over time, without undergoing alterations. The objective of this study was to determine the color variations experienced by reinforced resins when immersed in a pigmenting substance as a function of the time factor and the type of final polishing performed. In vitro experimental study of three nanoparticle resins: Filtek Z-350 XT® (3M), Brillant NG® (Coltene), Tetric N-Ceram® (Vivadent) where color stability was compared when immersed in coffee. 120 Discs of resins (enamel color A3) were made and subsequently divided into two groups: Group 1 usual polishing protocol Group 2: usual protocol plus Biscover® (Bisco) light-curing sealer. The samples were stored in distilled water in an oven at 37 ° for 24 hours for hydration. Color was recorded using the Konica Minolta® colorimeter. Subsequently, the samples were immersed in coffee, and the color was taken again at 24 hours and 7 days. Data were statistically analyzed using analysis of variance and Tukey's comparison test. It was observed that the most pigmented resin in group 1 corresponded to the Filteck Z-350 resin with DE: 4.68 at 24 hours and DE: 5.53 at 7 days. When analyzing group 2, the three resins maintained low DE values: 0.96 to 1.42 in both periods. By immersing the resins in a pigmenting substance, the change in color occurs over time. However, the complementary use of a light-curing sealer such as polishing significantly improves color stability in these materials, factors that the clinician must take into account to achieve the success of their restorations.

A systematic review and network meta-analysis was performed to provide evidence for the best polishing protocol for different types of resin composites to minimize surface roughness. A search was performed in PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, LILACS, BBO, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library on July 2, 2019 (updated in December, 2020). In vitro studies that included at least two systems for polishing resin composites and analyzed surface roughness were included. The risk of bias was evaluated. A random-effects Bayesian-mixed treatment comparison model was used to compare surface roughness in resin composites with the different types of polishers. Surface under the cumulative ranking curve (SUCRA) analysis was performed to rank the probability for the best polishing system. After removal of duplicates, title and abstract screening yielded 34 studies. Network meta-analysis was not possible for hybrid and microhybrid composites. SUCRA analysis showed that abrasive paper discs allowed greater surface smoothness for nanohybrid and nanofill composites to a probability of between 83% and 91.6%. Silicon carbide brush had a 78.2% probability of being the best system for microfill composites. The use of abrasive paper disc polishers showed a favorable result in nanofill and nanohybrid resin composites. Silicon carbide brush has a greater chance of promoting a smoother surface for microfill resin composites.

El pulido es un paso de suma importancia en el flujo de trabajo de las restauraciones cerámicas, después de realizado un ajuste con puntas o piedras diamantadas, ya que disminuye la rugosidad de las superficies tratadas. Esto repercute positivamente en las propiedades mecánicas y ópticas del material. Sin embargo, la poca literatura disponible acerca de este procedimiento hace que sea pasado por alto. Debido a esto, el presente articulo tuvo como objetivo realizar una revisión bibliográfica sobre los diferentes protocolos de pulido para las diversas restauraciones cerámicas de mayor uso: Feldespática, disilicato de litio y zirconia en sus diferentes presentaciones. Se describen aspectos relevantes sobre el pulido mecánico, la rugosidad superficial y los sistemas de pulido actuales para cerámicas.


Polishing is an extremely important step in the workflow of ceramic restorations, after adjustment with diamond burs or stones, as it reduces the roughness of the treated surfaces. This has a positive impact on the mechanical and optical properties of the material; however, the limited literature available about this procedure makes it to be overlooked. Therefore, the aim of this article was to review the literature on the different polishing protocols for the most used ceramic restorations: Feldspathic, lithium disilicate and zirconia ceramics. Relevant aspects on mechanical polishing, surface roughness and current polishing systems for ceramics are described.

Resumo O objetivo desta pesquisa foi avaliar e quantificar a rugosidade do esmalte dentário após a remoção do adesivo residual ao retirar os bráquetes. Em 30 pré-molares humanos clinicamente saudáveis, foi realizada a colagem de bráquetes no centro da face vestibular. Após 24 horas, foram descolados e foi realizado o polimento do adesivo residual com três métodos diferentes: fresa multilaminada (12 lâminas) tronco-cônico com instrumentos rotativos em alta velocidade irrigada com água; fresa redonda com instrumentos rotativos em baixa velocidade (contra ângulo) sem irrigação e fresa de fibra de vidro com instrumentos rotativos em baixa velocidade (contra-ângulo) sem irrigação. Os elementos dentários foram observados com microscópio laser confocal antes da colagem dos bráquetes. Após a sua retirada e remoção do adesivo residual, a superfície do esmalte foi observada novamente com o microscópio laser confocal, e foi utilizado o software digital OLYMPUS OLS-4100 para realizar uma reconstrução tridimensional e medir a rugosidade deixada pelos diferentes métodos de polimento. Os resultados indicaram que a fresa multilaminada em alta velocidade irrigada com água é a que deixa a superfície com parâmetros de rugosidade mais baixos. Portanto, a fresa multilaminada seria o método mais indicado para eliminar a resina residual após a retirada dos bráquetes ao final de um tratamento ortodôntico (AU)


Abstract The aim of this research was to evaluate and quantify the roughness of the dental enamel after removing the residual adhesive when removing the brackets. In 30 clinically healthy human premolars, brackets were bonded in the center of the buccal face, which were detached in 24 hours, and the residual adhesive was polished with three different methods: multi-laminated bur (12 blades) conical trunk with rotary instruments in high speed irrigated with water, round milling cutter with low-speed rotary instruments (contra-angle) without irrigation, and glass milling (Fiber Glass) with low-speed rotary instruments (contra-angle) without irrigation. The dental elements were observed with a confocal laser microscope before bracket bonding. After its removal and removal of the residual adhesive, the enamel surface was observed again with the confocal laser microscope, and the OLYMPUS OLS-4100 digital software was used to perform a three-dimensional reconstruction and measure the roughness left by the different polishing methods. The results indicated that the multi-laminated cutter at high speed, irrigated with water, is the one that leaves the surface with lower roughness parameters. Therefore, the multilaminated bur would be the most suitable method to eliminate residual resin after removing brackets at the end of an orthodontic treatment. (AU)
