RESUMO

The aim of this paper is to analyze the formative and evaluative activities involving statistical graphs in the new textbooks for Chilean rural multigrade education. The methodology is qualitative, at a descriptive level and uses the content analysis technique. The sample is made up of the six primary education textbooks distributed by the Ministry of Education for rural multigrade schools. The results show the predominance of the bar chart, semiotic level 3, the task of calculating and the personal context in both types of activities, although with respect to the reading level, it is evident that level 4 predominates in the formative activities and level 2 in the evaluative ones. According to the results, it is recommended to incorporate graphs proposed by the curricular guidelines of the Ministry of Education, which are absent in textbooks as well as to include evaluative activities that require reflection on the nature of the data, context, representation and conclusions obtained from them.

RESUMO

3D printing has entered the medical field as a visualization tool that allows the manufacture of three-dimensional (3D) models that physically represent the anatomy of a patient in need of analysis to improve surgical results. This article analyzes the literature around reported study cases that make use of anatomical models for their surgical processes' planning, focusing on obtaining the quantitative results of each one of them. A search of case studies was carried out in the main medical databases such as PubMed, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, among others; to obtain the most relevant results of the 56 selected articles, the information of each study was analyzed and categorized. These articles presented figures and data about the benefits that are considered more representative to measure the positive impact of this technology. These benefits are summarized in variables such as the decrease in surgical time, greater accuracy in the diagnosis of pathology, blood loss reduction, and decreasing operating room costs; owed to an improvement in the surgery planning. It was found that in all the cases analyzed there was an improvement in the surgical results related to these variables, which were summarized in macro figures that combine this improvement quantitatively. In the analyzed studies, it was evident that there is great potential in the use of 3D printing for presurgical planning, being as the results of these analyzed interventions were better when using this technology. In addition, it was found that the results obtained initially, before applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were mostly of a qualitative nature; expressing the perception of researchers regarding the positive use of this tool in the field and evidencing an opportunity for this research to focus on concrete and technical information to show in numerical terms the effectiveness of this tool, to demonstrate the cost-benefit that it has for the field.

RESUMO

Science and art have been connected for centuries. With the development of new computational methods, new scientific disciplines have emerged, such as computational chemistry, and related fields, such as cheminformatics. Chemoinformatics is grounded on the chemical space concept: a multi-descriptor space in which chemical structures are described. In several practical applications, visual representations of the chemical space of compound datasets are low-dimensional plots helpful in identifying patterns. However, the authors propose that the plots can also be used as artistic expressions. This manuscript introduces an approach to merging art with chemoinformatics through visual and artistic representations of chemical space. As case studies, we portray the chemical space of food chemicals and other compounds to generate visually appealing graphs with twofold benefits: sharing chemical knowledge and developing pieces of art driven by chemoinformatics. The art driven by chemical space visualization will help increase the application of chemistry and art and contribute to general education and dissemination of chemoinformatics and chemistry through artistic expressions. All the code and data sets to reproduce the visual representation of the chemical space presented in the manuscript are freely available at https://github.com/DIFACQUIM/Art-Driven-by-Visual-Representations-of-Chemical-Space- . Scientific contribution: Chemical space as a concept to create digital art and as a tool to train and introduce students to cheminformatics.

Introduction: in Chile, the circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus began on March 3, 2020, triggering a rapid increase in cases in the country. Epidemiological and mobility data were essential to prevent the spread and severity of the infection. However, the limitation of being extrapolated from higher levels of administrative division to lower levels has made decision-making difficult. One way to solve this is to analyze and visualize infection data in its local context, such as data collected from Primary Health Care.Materials and Methods: a study that analyzed and visualized, using Microsoft Excel, Stata, and Looker Studio, 173,881 SARS-CoV-2 tests performed in the Viña del Mar Municipal Corporation (366,981 beneficiaries) during 2021-2022.Results: there were 33,633 positive cases for SARS-CoV-2, of which 11,084 were in the age range between 30 and 49 years. CESFAM Dr. Jorge Kaplán had the highest positive cases (5,838), while CECOSF Villa Hermosa had the lowest number (628). CECOSF Sergio Donoso and Santa Julia had a notable number of positive cases between 0 and 14 and 70 to 79 years, respectively. Discussion: there was a significant re lationship between the number of samples and positive cases by sampling site, jurisdiction, population per capita served by jurisdiction, and spatial distribution. Conclusion: The methodology used allowed for the analysis and visualization of SARS-CoV-2 infection data by jurisdiction, which the municipality can use to observe trends and generate strategies.

RESUMO

Purpose: To compare magnification and refocusing during phacoemulsification with the NGENUITY®â€¯3-D Visualization System (3-D) versus the conventional microscope (CM) OPMI LUMERA 700. Setting: This study was performed in the Department of Anterior Segment of the Fundación Hospital Nuestra Señora de la Luz. Design: Prospective, randomized, cross-sectional, multi-surgeon, and comparative study. Methods: This study enrolled 100 patients (eyes) scheduled for phacoemulsification to measure the number of times changes in focusing and magnification were needed during cataract surgery. Results: Our study included 100 patients. From the endpoints evaluated, "zoom-in" showed statistically significant differences for all of the four predefined cataract surgery steps (means: Step 1, 0.38 (CM) vs 0.08 (3-D); Step 2, 0.36 (CM) vs 0.06 (3-D); Step 3, 0.54 (CM) vs 0.22 (3-D); Step 4, 0.56 (CM) vs 0.24 (3-D); all comparisons, p <0.05). In Step 4, there was a statistically significant increased use of "focus-out" for the 3-D system (mean 0.16 (CM) vs 0.58 (3-D); p <0.05). "Focus-in" and "zoom-out" showed no group differences for all steps. The duration of surgery with the 3-D system was longer at each step and overall. The percentage of light intensity did not show a statistically significant difference between both systems, with a mean of 99.45 for CM vs 98.43% for the heads-up system. Conclusion: The heads-up 3-D system is a safe option that offers excellent magnification for anterior segment visualization. The surgical time is longer, but adjusting settings like light intensity and brightness may facilitate some surgical steps early in the learning curve.

Objectives: To verify human perception in relation to number of pixels, while also identifying the best puncture angle and which needle should be used, and to evaluate whether there is a difference if needle visualization software is used. Methods: 20 images were analyzed by 103 students who classified them as being sufficient or insufficient and were compared with the quality observed using photoshop. We evaluated whether there were differences between puncture angles of less than 45º and more than 45º, between IV catheter and introducer needles, and between images obtained with and without visualization software. Results: There was a higher percentage of sufficient ratings for images those that had more than 60 pixels and when the puncture angle was less than 45º, with significant associations between students' evaluations and each of these groups (p < 0.001). The percentages of images classified as sufficient were higher for images in which a IV catheter was used and also higher for those using the needle visualization software, with significant associations between the results for students' classifications and each of these groups (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The human eye classifies an image as sufficient according to higher numbers of pixels. Images of punctures at angles smaller than 45º in relation to the surface, of punctures performed with a IV catheter, and when using specific visualization software are also better detected by the human eye.

RESUMO

Extracting practical information from the large amounts of data gathered during the live imaging analysis of plant organs is a challenging issue. The present work investigates the use of the logistic growth model to analyze experimental data from root elongation assays performed in milli-fluidic devices with in situ imaging. Lactuca sativa was used as a bioindicator and was subjected to wide concentration ranges of four different herbicides: 2,4-D, atrazine, glyphosate, and paraquat. The model parameters were directly connected to standard indicators of toxicity and plant development, such as the LD50 and the absolute growth rate, respectively. In addition, it was found that realistic predictions of the maximum root length can be achieved about 60 h before the bioassay end point, which could significantly shorten the turnaround time. The combination of milli-fluidic devices, real-time imaging, and model-based data analysis becomes a powerful tool for environmental studies and ecotoxicity testing.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Transvenous embolization (TVE) of brain arteriovenous malformations (bAVMs) is an emerging endovascular technique that has shown high cure rates in selected cases. The rationale of our study was to determine authorship and worldwide institutional trends and contributions to the knowledge in this topic. METHODS: Web of Science database was used. A total of 63 articles were included based on predefined inclusion criteria, which were manually reviewed. The bibliometric analysis involved the use of quantitative bibliometric indicators and network analysis with co-authorship and co-occurrence of terms, which were performed using the bibliometrix package in R and VOSviewer, respectively. RESULTS: The first article was published in 2010, with the largest number of articles published in 2022 (10 articles). The average number of citations per document was 11.38, and the annual growth rate was 14.35%. The top 10 authors with the most scientific production on TVE of bAVMs were from France, and the most cited study was published by Iosif C in 2015, followed by Consoli A in 2013, and Chen CJ in 2018. Journal of Neurointerventional Surgery was the journal with the most articles published. The most commonly used keywords were dural arteriovenous fistula, Onyx, vascular disorders, and neurological surgery around 2016, and intervention around 2021. CONCLUSIONS: TVE of bAVMs is an emerging technique. Our search identified some scientific articles, without randomized clinical trials, but many case series from single institutions. French and German institutions are the pioneers in the field, and further research is required in specialized endovascular centers.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Pediatric surgery is a developing specialty with increasing volume in Latin America. However, the research and scientific activity trends carried out in this region in recent years are unknown. This study aimed to analyze and visualize Latin American research in pediatric surgery from 2012 to 2021. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Bibliometric cross-sectional study of scientific articles on pediatric surgery published by Latin American authors from 2012 to 2021 in Scopus was performed. Statistical and visual analysis was performed with R programming language and VOS viewer. RESULTS: 449 articles were found. Observational studies (44.7%; n = 201), case reports (20.4%; n = 92) and narrative reviews (11.4%; n = 51) were found to be the most common study designs. The published articles were predominantly monocentric (73.1%; n = 328), only 17% (n = 76) involved authors from 2 or more countries, and mostly there was no collaboration with high-income countries (80.6%; n = 362). The Journal of Pediatric Surgery was the journal with the highest volume of articles published (n = 37). The most used terms were Laparoscopy, Complications, and Liver Transplantation, and the countries with the highest number of articles published were Brazil and Argentina. CONCLUSIONS: This study found a progressive increase in the scientific activity of Latin authors in pediatric surgery from 2012 to 2021. The evidence produced was mainly from observational studies and case reports, predominantly conducted in Brazil. Multinational and international collaboration was low; the most frequent topics of interest were laparoscopy and minimally invasive surgery. LEVELS OF EVIDENCE: IV.

RESUMO

Human Activity Recognition (HAR) is a complex problem in deep learning, and One-Dimensional Convolutional Neural Networks (1D CNNs) have emerged as a popular approach for addressing it. These networks efficiently learn features from data that can be utilized to classify human activities with high performance. However, understanding and explaining the features learned by these networks remains a challenge. This paper presents a novel eXplainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) method for generating visual explanations of features learned by one-dimensional CNNs in its training process, utilizing t-Distributed Stochastic Neighbor Embedding (t-SNE). By applying this method, we provide insights into the decision-making process through visualizing the information obtained from the model's deepest layer before classification. Our results demonstrate that the learned features from one dataset can be applied to differentiate human activities in other datasets. Our trained networks achieved high performance on two public databases, with 0.98 accuracy on the SHO dataset and 0.93 accuracy on the HAPT dataset. The visualization method proposed in this work offers a powerful means to detect bias issues or explain incorrect predictions. This work introduces a new type of XAI application, enhancing the reliability and practicality of CNN models in real-world scenarios.

RESUMO

It is crucial to develop spatiotemporal analysis tools to mitigate risks during a pandemic. Many dashboards encountered in the literature do not consider how the geolocation characteristics and travel patterns may influence the spread of the virus. This work brings an interactive tool that is capable of crossing information about mobility patterns, geolocation characteristics and epidemiologic variables. To do so, our system uses a mobility network, generated through anonymized mobile location data, which enables the division of a region into representative clusters. The clusters' aggregated socioeconomic, and epidemiologic indicators can be analyzed through multiple coordinated views. The proposal is to enable users to understand how different locations commute citizens, monitor risk over time, and understand what locations need more assistance, considering different layers of visualization, such as clusters and individual locations. The main novelty is the interactive way to construct the mobility network that defines the social distancing level and the way that risks are managed, since many different geolocation characteristics can be considered and visualized, such as socioeconomic indicators of a location, the economic importance of a set of locations, and the connection of important neighborhoods of a city with other cities. The proposed tool was built and verified by experts assembled to give scientific recommendations to the city administration of Recife, the capital city of Pernambuco. Our analysis shows how a policymaker could use the tool to evaluate different isolation scenarios considering the trade-off between economic activity and contamination risk, where the practical insights can also be used to tighten and relax mitigation measures in other phases of a pandemic.

RESUMO

Medical thermography provides an overview of the human body with two-dimensional (2D) information that assists the identification of temperature changes, based on the analysis of surface distribution. However, this approach lacks spatial depth information, which can be enhanced by adding multiple images or three-dimensional (3D) systems. Therefore, the methodology applied for this paper generates a 3D point cloud (from thermal infrared images), a 3D geometry model (from CT images), and the segmented inner anatomical structures. Thus, the following computational processing was employed: Structure from Motion (SfM), image registration, and alignment (affine transformation) between the 3D models obtained to combine and unify them. This paper presents the 3D reconstruction and visualization of the respective geometry of the neck/bust and inner anatomical structures (thyroid, trachea, veins, and arteries). Additionally, it shows the whole 3D thermal geometry in different anatomical sections (i.e., coronal, sagittal, and axial), allowing it to be further examined by a medical team, improving pathological assessments. The generation of 3D thermal anatomy models allows for a combined visualization, i.e., functional and anatomical images of the neck region, achieving encouraging results. These 3D models bring correlation of the inner and outer regions, which could improve biomedical applications and future diagnosis with such a methodology.

RESUMO

Among the most relevant themes of modernity, using renewable resources to produce biofuels attracts several countries' attention, constituting a vital part of the global geopolitical chessboard since humanity's energy needs will grow faster and faster. Fortunately, advances in personal computing associated with free and open-source software production facilitate this work of prospecting and understanding complex scenarios. Thus, for the development of this work, the keywords "biofuel" and "nanocatalyst" were delivered to the Scopus database, which returned 1071 scientific articles. The titles and abstracts of these papers were saved in Research Information Systems (RIS) format and submitted to automatic analysis via the Visualization of Similarities Method implemented in VOSviewer 1.6.18 software. Then, the data extracted from the VOSviewer were processed by software written in Python, which allowed the use of the network data generated by the Visualization of Similarities Method. Thus, it was possible to establish the relationships for the pair between the nodes of all clusters classified by Link Strength Between Items or Terms (LSBI) or by year. Indeed, other associations should arouse particular interest in the readers. However, here, the option was for a numerical criterion. However, all data are freely available, and stakeholders can infer other specific connections directly. Therefore, this innovative approach allowed inferring that the most recent pairs of terms associate the need to produce biofuels from microorganisms' oils besides cerium oxide nanoparticles to improve the performance of fuel mixtures by reducing the emission of hydrocarbons (HC) and oxides of nitrogen (NOx).

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to describe the anatomical outcomes of Brilliant Blue G (BBG)-assisted extensive internal limiting membrane peeling for proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) under three-dimensional (3D) visualization. METHODS: This study constitutes a retrospective case series conducted in a private retina practice, of 14 consecutive patients (14 eyes) with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment complicated by PVR who underwent pars plana vitrectomy between January 2019 and January 2020. The internal limiting membrane (ILM) was selectively stained with BBG, and perspectives were enhanced with a 3D visualization system. We peeled off the ILM beyond the vascular arcades up to the periphery. The main outcome was anatomical success, defined as persistent retinal reattachment after removal of the silicone oil tamponade. RESULTS: Anatomic success was achieved with a single surgery in 11 of 14 (78.6%) eyes, and eventual success was achieved in all eyes. The mean patient follow-up time was 12.3 months (range, 7-16 months). The mean preoperative best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA) was 2.93 ± 0.79 logMAR which improved to 1.75 + 0.91 at the last follow-up. CONCLUSION: Extensive ILM peeling allowed the creation of a cleavage plane underlying the PVR membranes that facilitated its complete removal, thereby achieving anatomically reattached retina and reducing the risk of recurrence of retinal detachment. The long-term effects of this technique need further research.

ABSTRACT Objectives. Explore how the content of the articles published by the Pan American Journal of Public Health during its 100 years of existence has aligned with the key health issues of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). Methods. A bibliometric analysis was carried out, with visualization of its results. Information on articles published in the Journal was retrieved from PAHO's Institutional Repository for Information Sharing (IRIS) for the first 75 years and Scopus for the last 25 years, until February 2022; References to Governing Bodies documents and statements by the directors were used to establish PAHO's key themes. Results. Initially, 12 573 publications were obtained and 9 289 were considered for analysis for the period 1922 to 1996, and 3 208 for the period 1997 to 2022. For the bibliometric analysis of the Scopus information, indicators such as the authors and their origin, language of publication, and number and origin of citations were considered. For the visualizations, publications were divided into five periods so that they coincided with the periods established for the analysis of PAHO's priority themes. Keyword co-occurrence maps were made to observe the evolution of published topics and relate them to public health approaches in each period. Conclusion. The topics published in the Pan American Journal of Public Health and its precursor bulletins reflect the history of regional public health and its evolution over time, as well as the key health issues of the Pan American Health Organization.

BACKGROUND: Genome-scale metabolic reconstruction tools have been developed in the last decades. They have helped to reconstruct eukaryotic and prokaryotic metabolic models, which have contributed to fields, e.g., genetic engineering, drug discovery, prediction of phenotypes, and other model-driven discoveries. However, the use of these programs requires a high level of bioinformatic skills. Moreover, the functionalities required to build models are scattered throughout multiple tools, requiring knowledge and experience for utilizing several tools. RESULTS: Here we present ChiMera, which combines tools used for model reconstruction, prediction, and visualization. ChiMera uses CarveMe in the reconstruction module, generating a gap-filled draft reconstruction able to produce growth predictions using flux balance analysis for gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. ChiMera also contains two modules for metabolic network visualization. The first module generates maps for the most important pathways, e.g., glycolysis, nucleotides and amino acids biosynthesis, fatty acid oxidation and biosynthesis and core-metabolism. The second module produces a genome-wide metabolic map, which can be used to retrieve KEGG pathway information for each compound in the model. A module to investigate gene essentiality and knockout is also present. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, ChiMera uses automation algorithms to combine a variety of tools to automatically perform model creation, gap-filling, flux balance analysis (FBA), and metabolic network visualization. ChiMera models readily provide metabolic insights that can aid genetic engineering projects, prediction of phenotypes, and model-driven discoveries.
