RESUMO

One of the main factors that influences the fertility of cattle in grazing systems in hot tropical climates is heat stress. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of season, breed, hormonal and physiological condition on the quantity and quality of cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) and embryos produced in vitro, from Romosinuano (RM) and Tropical Milking (TM) donors. Three ovum pick-up and in vitro fertilization (OPU-IVF) were performed, one per season: hot dry (HD; 10, 10), hot humid (HH; 9, 9) and fresh dry (FD; 7, 10) in RM and LT donors. Serum levels of cortisol, insulin and glucose were measured, in addition to heart rate (HR), respiratory rate (RR) and rectal temperature (RT). Effect of season x genotype interaction (p ≤ 0.05) was observed in all COC variables and only in cleavage embryos (CLI) (p ≤ 0.05). Body weight (BW) affected all COC variables (p ≤ 0.01), except unviable (UNV) although affected degenerated embryos (DEG) (p ≤ 0.01) and total blastocysts (BLAST) (p ≤ 0.01). Cow age only affected viable COCs (VIAB) (p ≤ 0.05), code one blastocysts (BC1) and BLAST (p ≤ 0.01). Cortisol affected total COCs (COCsT), VIAB and total matured in vitro (TMIV) (p ≤ 0.01), as well as CLI, BC1 (p ≤ 0.01) and BLAST (p ≤ 0.05). Insulin affected COCsT (p ≤ 0.01), UNV (p ≤ 0.05), denuded oocytes (DE) (p ≤ 0.01), BC1 and code two blastocysts (BC2) (p ≤ 0.01). Glucose affected all COC variables (p ≤ 0.01), except UNV and all embryo variables except BC2. HR affected COCsT, DE, TMIV (p ≤ 0.01), CLI, BLAST and DEG (p ≤ 0.05). RR affected COCsT, UNV, VIAB, CLI (p ≤ 0.05), BC1, BLAST and DEG (p ≤ 0.01). RT only affected DE, VIAB (p ≤ 0.01) and BLAST (p ≤ 0.05). The seasonal climatic year variation of Veracruz and changes in physiological and hormonal variables have diverse effects on the cumulus-oocyte complexes and embryos produced by RM and TM donors.

RESUMO

This study conducted in Sergipe State, Brazil, aimed to investigate the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the surface water of five rivers, determining their sources, spatial and temporal variations, and ecotoxicological risks. Correlation and principal component analyses were utilized to identify the relationship between PAH concentrations and water sample properties. Results indicated higher PAH concentrations during the rainy season, attributed to increased run-off and sediment resuspension. The composition of PAHs suggested a main petroleum source with organic material combustion in minor scale. Ecological risk assessment revealed potential risks to the ecosystem, emphasizing the need for continuous monitoring of PAHs pollution. This study highlights the importance of understanding and mitigating PAHs contamination in rivers to protect aquatic ecosystems.

RESUMO

The present study investigates molecular-based PCR techniques to estimate the prevalence of fish pathogens in southwest Mexico where recurrent mortality in the tilapia cultures has been observed. Sample of internal organs and lesions of Nile tilapia were taken and analysed in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2022 to detect bacterial pathogens using PCR. No samples were taken in 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The real-time PCR conditions were optimized to allow a qualitative reliable detection of the bacteria from fixed fish tissue. A total of 599 pond- and cage-cultured tilapia from the southwestern Mexican Pacific (Guerrero, Oaxaca and Chiapas states) were analysed. In this tropical region, during 2018 and 2019 water temperatures of the tilapia cultures were generally with the optimal range to grow Nile tilapia, although extreme values were recorded on some farms. Most of the tilapia sampled were apparently healthy. No Francisella sp. was detected in any sample, and Staphylococcus sp. was the most prevalent (from 0% to 64%) bacteria from the three states over time. Low prevalence of Aeromonas sp. was found, from 0% to 4.3%, although the fish pathogen Aeromonas dhakensis was not detected. Sterptococcus iniae was only detected in Chiapas in 2019 at a low prevalence (1.4%), while the major tilapia pathogen S. agalactiae was detected at a high prevalence (from 0% to 59%) in the three Mexican states. This is the first detection of these pathogenic bacteria in rural farms using real-time PCR and constitutes a great risk for tilapia aquaculture in Mexico, as well as a potential dispersion of these pathogens to other aquaculture areas.

RESUMO

A 23 factorial design was performed to analyze the performance of a mini-split air conditioning system under several psychrometric air conditions at the evaporator inlet, similar to Tropical Caribbean region conditions. In addition, a search for new energy-saving opportunities was performed. The results showed that interactions between the temperature of the air inlet, the humidity of the air inlet, and the fan speed level are significant in the mini-split energy performance under Caribbean climate conditions. Hence, working on an oriented energy savings control strategy is necessary. Therefore, this study recommends developing a fan speed control scheme, generating energy savings of around 10% in the air conditioning unit.

RESUMO

Chironomus sancticaroli is a tropical species, easy to grow and to maintain in laboratory cultures. It has a fast reproduction cycle, under adequate conditions, around 30 days, allowing it to have many generations per year, an important criterion for selecting a test organism in ecotoxicology. Its life stages include: eggs, four larval instars (one planktonic and three benthic), pupa and adult (midges) This study aimed to: (1) review the methods for C. sancticaroli cultivation and its use in ecotoxicological tests, (2) establish a laboratory culture of C. sancticaroli, presenting the difficulties and discussing the ways to overcome them. Early 4th instar larvae was the most used in acute studies, while the 1st instar larvae (early 1st instar) was the most used in chronic studies; 96 h and 28 days were the most frequent durations in acute and chronic studies, respectively. The most common endpoints evaluated were organisms' survival and development, and most of the ecotoxicological studies using C. sancticaroli were performed in laboratory. Most of the tested contaminants were pesticides and these had the most adverse effects on organisms. Most mesocosms with environmental contaminated samples did not show adverse effects on C. sancticaroli. Chronic and field studies as well as those testing the effects of the mixture contaminants on C. sancticaroli were still deficient. Keeping the laboratory environment and equipment effectively sanitized was important as well as maintaining stabilized conditions of temperature, photoperiod, physical, chemical and biological water quality in cultures.

RESUMO

The baseline values for metal(loid)s in soils are known as a tool for the evaluation, prevention, and monitoring of the environmental quality of the soil. The main aim is to propose baseline values for metal(loid)s through the analysis of the concentrations in soils within natural areas; additionally, this study attempts to assess the environmental quality of soils in agricultural areas. The study was developed in the Piedemonte Llanero from Colombia a region with more than 5000 mm year-1 of pluviometry. A total of 90 soil samples were collected in agricultural and natural areas. Chemical analysis was conducted by acid digestion following the method EPA 3050B and determined the metal(loid)s (Al, As, Fe, Cd, Cr, Cu, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb, and Zn) through ICP-OES. This is the first time that baseline values are proposed for a region in Colombia. The values proposed (expressed in mg kg-1) are Cd (0.3), As (2.8), Cu (9.9), Ni (10.2), Pb (11.3), Cr (21.1), Zn (28.2), Mn (83.8), Mg (348), Fe (22,775), and Al (28,975). These values are comparatively lower than those reported for other regions in Latin America and the rest of the world. Also, agricultural soils are not contaminated. The possible explanation is as a consequence of the intense washing caused by the intense rainfall of the place. The results also demonstrated that the soils in this region are not contaminated. Finally, these advances will allow public and private organizations to establish criteria for the environmental and sustainable management of soils, especially on agricultural activities.

RESUMO

The deposition of trace elements around a pulp and paper industry in Morelia, Mexico, was evaluated using two lichen species as biomonitors. Samples of the foliose lichen Flavopunctelia praesignis and the fruticose lichen Usnea ceratina were collected in two remote areas and transplanted at different distances and directions from the pollution source. Lichen samples were exposed for 4 months (1) around the industrial area and (2) in their native habitats (control sites). We investigated the bioaccumulation of 11 trace elements in lichen thalli, and we compared the response of the two lichen species. To identify possible common sources, we evaluated the relationships between trace elements by correlations and cluster analyses. Our results showed that Cd was a good tracer for air pollution from the pulp and paper mills. In samples of Usnea ceratina exposed around the industrial area, Cd was significantly higher than in the remote area. Within the study area, trace element contents increase with the distance from the source, and they showed high depositions in the direction of prevailing winds. Moreover, we were able to detect groups of elements with similar behavior and common origins. Our results indicated that Flavopunctelia praesignis showed a higher capacity to accumulate trace elements than Usnea ceratina.

RESUMO

Nineteen species of Anguilla Schrank, 1798 are globally distributed in the world, however knowledge on the biogeography, species diversity and ecology of the 13 species of tropical anguillids in the Indo-Pacific region is highly limited. This study examined the diversity of tropical anguillids found in North Maluku of East Indonesia, which is known to have unique and highly heterogeneous habitats, complex oceanography, high biodiversity, and representativeness of Asian and Australian fauna. By means of molecular identification, two tropical anguillid eels, A. marmorata Quoy & Gaimard, 1824 and A. interioris Whitely, 1938, were confirmed to be distributed in North Maluku. This study also examined the mitochondrial DNA haplotype diversity of A. interioris, as it could contribute to our understanding of the biogeography and life history of this eel species. Our molecular analyses showed the presence of the same haplotypes along the different locations in the Indo-Pacific region. Although more samples and DNA markers are required to provide more support, the results suggest that the larvae of A. interioris from potentially different spawning sites in the Indian and Pacific oceans could be mixed together due to the complexity of oceanic currents, and when these migrating larvae reach maturity, they would likely spawn with the local eels.

RESUMO

To date, evidence regarding the performance of secondary metabolites from larval stages of sea stars as an anti-predation defense relates only to a few species/specimens from a few geographic ranges. Unfortunately, this hinders a comprehensive global understanding of this inter-specific predator-prey interaction. Here, we present laboratory experimental evidence of chemical defense action in the early developmental stages and adults of the sea star Echinaster (Othilia) brasiliensis from Brazil against sympatric and allopatric invertebrate consumers. Blastulae, early and late brachiolarias of E. (O.) brasiliensis were not consumed by the sympatric and allopatric crabs Mithraculus forceps. Blastulae were also avoided by the sympatric and allopatric individuals of the anemone Anemonia sargassensis, but not the larval stages. Extracts from embryos (blastula) and brachiolarias of E. (O.) brasiliensis from one sampled population (João Fernandes beach) significantly inhibited the consumption by sympatric M. forceps, but not by allopatric crabs and A. sargassensi anemone. In this same site, extracts from adults E. (O.) brasiliensis significantly inhibited the consumption by sympatric and allopatric specimens of the crab in a range of concentrations. Whereas equivalent extract concentrations of E. (O.) brasiliensis from other population (Itaipu beach)inhibited the predation by allopatric M. forceps, while sympatric individuals of this crab avoided the only the higher level tested. Then, early stages and adult specimens of E. (O.) brasiliensis can be chemically defended against consumers, but this action is quite variable, depending on the type (anemone or crab) and the origin of the consumer (sympatric or allopatric).

RESUMO

The development of a strategic protocol is fundamental to the control of Rhipicephalus microplus. The efficacy of different strategic tick control protocols (Day 1 to Day 119) using commercial acaricides according to R. microplus burden on bovines was evaluated. Female ticks (4.5-8 mm in length) were initially counted on cattle to form four groups of bovines with low and high tick burdens (treated and control), with 10 animals each. The animals were then (Day 0) kept in different paddocks, and the bovines from the two treated groups received their first treatment. The main difference in the protocols was the use of a spray formulation on animals with high tick burden. Additionally, the criterion for animal re-treatment (treatment interval) during the proposed strategic protocol was evaluated according to tick length by visual inspection - if 30% of the bovines of a group presented ticks < 4 mm between their legs and dewlap, the treatment was applied, which could change the originally proposed intervals. The number of days for which animals from the treated groups remained without acaricide administration (palliative control, ≥30 tick females < 4 mm) after the end of the strategic tick control protocol was recorded. Tick counts and visual inspection were done weekly until days 203 and 119, respectively. The results showed that the adopted protocol was successful based on calculated efficacy. Mean efficacies from Day 7 to Day 119 were 86.1% and 96.1% for treated groups with low and high tick burdens, respectively, and mean tick count did not differ between them (P > 0.05) but did differ from their respectively controls (P = <0.0001). The use of spray formulation at the beginning of the protocol for animals with a high tick burden helped to avoid harmful tick infestations. Visual analysis of tick length anticipated the proposed treatment intervals. Treated groups remained without palliative treatment for 70 days, while control groups needed treatment every 28 days. It was concluded that strategic control protocols must be developed according to tick burden, and tick length can be used to indicate when treatment needs to be applied.

RESUMO

The present study characterized the macrobenthic fauna found on a muddy-sandy tidal flat of the Amazon coast in areas with and without the presence of Diopatra cuprea (Bosc, 1802) (Onuphidae: Annelida) tubes. In addition, a brief review of records of D. cuprea on the Brazilian Amazon coast is presented. Samples were collected in February 2014 in two different areas: (1) an area in which D. cuprea tubes were present, and (2) a control area, in which worm tubes were absent. A total of 21 taxa were found, of which 10 were associated exclusively with D. cuprea tubes. Although richness did not vary significantly among areas, there were changes in the abundance and composition of species and trophic guilds. In the area with tubes, there was a higher abundance of filter-feeders and the presence of species adapted to consolidated and muddy substrates. Our results and those of other studies indicate that D. cuprea commonly presents low density in the Amazon coastal, and its tubes are typically scattered widely in the intertidal zone. The present findings add knowledge about the presence of the bioconstructor in coastal areas and reinforce the role of tube-building polychaetes as ecosystem engineers.(AU)

RESUMO

Myxozoans of the family Myxobolidae are common parasites in fish. The diversity and ecology of the species of the genus Unicauda are poorly known, which hampers the understanding of the distribution and prevalence of this group of parasites. In the present study, cysts containing parasites whose morphology was consistent with the genus Unicauda were found in the circumorbital region of the ocular conjunctiva of the freshwater fish Moenkhausia grandisquamis Müller & Troschel, 1845 (Characiformes: Characidae) and Triportheus angulatus Spix & Agassiz, 1829 (Characiformes: Triportheidae). The spores have an oval body and long caudal appendage, with a mean total length of 65.2 ± 5.9 µm and width of 5.2 ± 0.7 µm, with two oval and symmetrical polar capsules of 4.9 ± 0.5 µm in length and 1.4 ± 0.2 µm in width, containing polar filaments with five or six coils. An integrated comparative analysis of the morphological characteristics of this parasite and partial sequences of the SSU rDNA gene supported the identification of a new species of histozoic parasite of the genus Unicauda found in fish from the Tocantins River basin, in the eastern Brazilian Amazon region. The new species was denominated by Unicauda tavaresii n. sp.

RESUMO

The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of gestation length, season at calving (autumn-winter vs. spring-summer) and calf sex on birth weight and incidence of retained placenta (RP) in crossbred lactating dairy cows. A total of 187 parturitions were evaluated in a commercial dairy farm at Alto Paranaiba region, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Cows that did not release the placental membranes within the first 12 hours after calf expulsion were diagnosed with RP. At birth, calf sex was registered, and birth weight was estimated by using a weighing tape. The incidence of RP was 36.89% (69/187). The mean birth weight of the calves (41.73 kg) did not differ among the calf sexes and seasons of the year at birth (P > 0.05), but the cows with below-average gestation lengths (274.4 days) calved lighter calves. Furthermore, the season of the year at calving and calf sex had no influence on RP incidence (P > 0.05), although a higher incidence of RP was observed in cows that had shorter gestation lengths (49.44%) and calves below-average birth weights (51.76%). In conclusion, cows with shorter gestation lengths produce lighter offspring and have a high predisposition to RP.

Active fires are considered to be the key contributor to, and critical consequence of, climate change. Quantifying the occurrence frequency and regional variations in global active fires is significant for assessing carbon cycling, atmospheric chemistry, and postfire ecological effects. Multiscale variations in fire occurrence frequencies have still never been fully investigated despite free access to global active fire products. We analyzed the occurrence frequencies of Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) active fires at national, pan-regional (tropics and extratropics) to global scales and at hourly, monthly, and annual scales during 2012-2017. The results revealed that the accumulated occurrence frequencies of VIIRS global active fires were up to 12,193 × 104 , yet exhibiting slight fluctuations annually and with respect to the 2014-2016 El Niño event, especially during 2015. About 35.52% of VIIRS active fires occurred from July to September, particularly in August (13.06%), and typically between 10:00 and 13:00 Greenwich Mean Time (GMT; 42.96%) and especially at 11:00 GMT (17.65%). The total counts conform to a bimodal pattern with peaks in 5°-11°N (18.01%) and 5°-18°S (32.46%), respectively, alongside a unimodal distribution in terms of longitudes between 15°E and 30°E (32.34%). Tropical annual average of active fire (1,496.81 × 104 ) accounted for 75.83%. Nearly 30% were counted in Brazil, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Indonesia, and Mainland Southeast Asia (MSEA). Fires typically occurred between June (or August) and October (or November) with far below-average rainfall in these countries, while those in MSEA primarily occurred between February and April during the dry season. They were primarily observed between 00:00 and 02:00 GMT, between 12:00 and 14:00 within each Zone Time. We believed that VIIRS global active fires products are useful for developing fire detection algorithms, discriminating occurrence types and ignition causes via correlation analyses with physical geographic elements, and assessment of their potential impacts.

RESUMO

Hepatic infection involving a parasite of the family Calyptosporidae was recorded in characiform fish from the Tocantins river in the Brazilian Amazon region. In the present study, an integrated comparative analysis of morphological characteristics, histological and structural traits, and the sequence of a partial fragment of the SSUrRNA gene provides support for the identification of a new calyptosporid species, found parasitising the hepatic tissue of the fish Triportheus angulatus, collected from the Tocantins River. This new species was named Calyptospora gonzaguensis n. sp. and had ovoid oocysts with a diameter of 19.6 ± 1.4 µm and four peripheral sporocysts, 9.2 ± 0.6 µm long and 3.9 ± 0.2 µm wide, enveloped individually in fine adhesive membrane, composed of an ellipsoid body and posterior extension, with a mean length of 2.2 ± 0.4 µm.

RESUMO

Myxozoans of the family Ceratomyxidae are common coelozoic parasites of marine, anadromous, and freshwater fish, and may also be found, less frequently, parasitizing the tissue of these hosts. The diversity and ecology of the freshwater species of the genus Ceratomyxa have been poorly investigated, leading to a knowledge gap that restricts the understanding of the distribution and prevalence of this group of parasites. In the present study, parasites were found inside vermiform plasmodia, characterised by oscillatory movements in the characiform species Hemiodus unimaculatus. The crescent-shaped and elongated spores, perpendicular to the suture line, have a mean length of 28.9 ± 2.7 µm and width of 2.6 ± 0.1 µm, with two symmetrical oval polar capsules, 1.9 ± 0.3 µm in length and 1.7 ± 0.2 µm in width, containing polar filaments with three or four coils, located near the central suture, with symmetrical lateral elongations 14.3 ± 1.1 µm in length and binucleate amoeboid sporoplasm. The integrated comparative analysis of the morphological characteristics and partial SSU rRNA sequences supported the identification of a new species of coelozoic Ceratomyxa, found in the gallbladder of H. unimaculatus, from the Tocantins basin, in the municipalities of Estreito and Imperatriz in eastern Brazilian Amazonia. The new species was denominated Ceratomyxa fonsecai n. sp.

RESUMO

The major areas of the world where viticulture is practiced enjoy temperate or cool temperature climates. When wine grapes are grown in tropical regions, edaphoclimatic factors result in distinct grape quality attributes, and production techniques also require significant adjustment. The objective of this study was to characterize the chemical compositions, in particular of phenolic compounds, of Syrah grapes grown in two location in northeast Brazil - these are also at widely different altitudes. A range of methods of phenolic extraction were used, along with classical chemical analyses including for organic acids, sugars, monomeric anthocyanins, flavonols, stilbene, condensed tannins and some of the monomeric and small oligomeric procyanidins. The regions and their diverse environments had a larger influence than harvest year. The grapes at higher altitude (Bahia, 1.100 m asl (metres above sea level) were characterized by higher levels of malic acid, anthocyanins and condensed tannins in the skins. The low-altitude grapes (Pernambuco, 350 m asl (metres above sea level) had higher levels of glucose, fructose, 3-O-acetylglucoside anthocyanins and condensed tannins in the seeds. Fruit composition was highly influenced by the region. In the low-altitude region, the grapes were characterized by higher tartaric and citric acid in the must, also of flavonols in skins and of tannins in the seeds. Meanwhile, the fruit from the high altitude, contained higher levels of malic and succinic acid in the must, and of anthocyanins and condensed tannins in the skins.
