This study aimed to evaluate the survival of the probiotic Lactobacillus fermentum when it is encapsulated in powdered macroemulsions to develop a probiotic product with low water activity. For this purpose, the effect of the rotational speed of the rotor-stator and the spray-drying process was assessed on the microorganism survival and physical properties of probiotic high-oleic palm oil (HOPO) emulsions and powders. Two Box-Behnken experimental designs were carried out: in the first one, for the effect of the macro emulsification process, the numerical factors were the amount of HOPO, the velocity of the rotor-stator, and time, while the factors for the second one, the drying process, were the amount of HOPO, inoculum, and the inlet temperature. It was found that the droplet size (ADS) and polydispersity index (PdI) were influenced by HOPO concentration and time, ζ-potential by HOPO concentration and velocity, and creaming index (CI) by speed and time of homogenization. Additionally, HOPO concentration affected bacterial survival; the viability was between 78-99% after emulsion preparation and 83-107% after seven days. The spray-drying process showed a similar viable cell count before and after the drying process, a reduction between 0.04 and 0.8 Log10 CFUg-1; the moisture varied between 2.4% and 3.7%, values highly acceptable for probiotic products. We concluded that encapsulation of L. fermentum in powdered macroemulsions at the conditions studied is effective in obtaining a functional food from HOPO with optimal physical and probiotic properties according to national legislation (>106 CFU mL-1 or g-1).

Thermal ablation is a well-established successful treatment for cardiac arrhythmia, but it still presents limitations that require further studies and developments. In the rotor-driven functional re-entry arrhythmia, tissue heterogeneity results on the generation of spiral/scroll waves and wave break dynamics that may cause dangerous sustainable fibrillation. The selection of the target region to perform thermal ablation to mitigate this type of arrhythmia is challenging, since it considerably affects the local electrophysiology dynamics. This work deals with the numerical simulation of the thermal ablation of a cardiac muscle tissue and its effects on the dynamics of rotor-driven functional re-entry arrhythmia. A non-homogeneous two-dimensional rectangular region is used in the present numerical analysis, where radiofrequency ablation is performed. The electrophysiology problem for the propagation of the action potential in the cardiac tissue is simulated with the Fenton-Karma model. Thermal damage caused to the tissue by the radiofrequency heating is modeled by the Arrhenius equation. The effects of size and position of a heterogeneous region in the original muscle tissue were first analyzed, in order to verify the possible existence of the functional re-entry arrhythmia during the time period considered in the simulations. For each case that exhibited re-entry arrhythmia, six different ablation procedures were analyzed, depending on the position of the radiofrequency electrode and heating time. The obtained results revealed the effects of different model parameters on the existence and possible mitigation of the functional re-entry arrhythmia.

This work presents an experimental study related to the mechanical performance of a special design spring fabricated with a superelastic shape memory alloy (SMA-SE). For the experimental testing, the spring was coupled in a rotor machine, aiming to attenuate the mechanical vibration when the system went through a natural frequency without any external power source. It was verified that the reduction in instabilities stemmed from the better distribution of vibration force in the proposed device, as well as the damping capacity of the spring material. These findings showed that the application of the M-Shape device of SMA-SE for three different cases could reduce vibration up to 23 dB when compared to the situations without, and with, 1.5 mm of preload. The M-Shape device was shown to be efficient in reducing the mechanical vibration in a rotor system. This was due to the damping capacity of the SMA-SE material, and because the application did not require any external source of energy to generate phase transformation.

Induction motors (IM) are key components of any industrial process; hence, it is important to carry out continuous monitoring to detect incipient faults in them in order to avoid interruptions on production lines. Broken rotor bars (BRBs), which are among the most regular and most complex to detect faults, have attracted the attention of many researchers, who are searching for reliable methods to recognize this condition with high certainty. Most proposed techniques in the literature are applied during the IM startup transient, making it necessary to develop more efficient fault detection techniques able to carry out fault identification during the IM steady state. In this work, a novel methodology based on motor current signal analysis and contrast estimation is introduced for BRB detection. It is worth noting that contrast has mainly been used in image processing for analyzing texture, and, to the best of the authors' knowledge, it has never been used for diagnosing the operative condition of an induction motor. Experimental results from applying the approach put forward validate Unser and Tamura contrast definitions as useful indicators for identifying and classifying an IM operational condition as healthy, one broken bar (1BB), or two broken bars (2BB), with high certainty during its steady state.

The presence of internal rotation in sigma bonds is essential for conformational analysis of organic molecules and its understanding is of great relevance in chemistry, as well as in several other areas. However, for aromatic compounds that have substituent groups, withdrawers or donors of electron, there are no data in the literature to explain their rotational barriers. In this context, the work studied the internal rotational barriers of electron donating and withdrawing groups in aromatic compounds using the MP3, MP4, and CCSD(T) methods and the influence of substituents' nature on barrier heights was investigated through calculations based on the theory of Natural Bond Orbitals (NBO) and Quantum Theory of Atoms in Molecules (QTAIM). The results obtained showed that the CCSD(T) method is the one that best describes the internal rotational barriers, followed by MP4 and MP3 and the electron donating groups decrease the barrier, whereas electron withdrawing groups increase. Through the NBO analysis it was possible to observe that for withdrawing groups the interaction of the molecular orbitals is more accentuated promoting the increase of the rotational barrier of these compounds. Through the QTAIM analysis it was possible to show that, for electron donating groups, the internal rotation is influenced by the loss of electronic density when the substituents is perpendicular to the ring plane, however, for withdrawing groups the density is little influenced, regardless of the two conformations (minimum and maximum energy). Two molecules showed free rotation, trichloromethylbenzene and methylbenzene, and the theoretical calculations NBO and QTAIM showed that for these species there is no difference in the properties studied when there is rotation of the dihedral angle.

Ventricular fibrillation (VF) signals are characterized by highly volatile and erratic electrical impulses, the analysis of which is difficult given the complex behavior of the heart rhythms in the left (LV) and right ventricles (RV), as sometimes shown in intracardiac recorded Electrograms (EGM). However, there are few studies that analyze VF in humans according to the simultaneous behavior of heart signals in the two ventricles. The objective of this work was to perform a spectral and a non-linear analysis of the recordings of 22 patients with Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) and clinical indication for a cardiac resynchronization device, simultaneously obtained in LV and RV during induced VF in patients with a Biventricular Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator (BICD) Contak Renewal IVTM (Boston Sci.). The Fourier Transform was used to identify the spectral content of the first six seconds of signals recorded in the RV and LV simultaneously. In addition, measurements that were based on Information Theory were scrutinized, including Entropy and Mutual Information. The results showed that in most patients the spectral envelopes of the EGM sources of RV and LV were complex, different, and with several frequency peaks. In addition, the Dominant Frequency (DF) in the LV was higher than in the RV, while the Organization Index (OI) had the opposite trend. The entropy measurements were more regular in the RV than in the LV, thus supporting the spectral findings. We can conclude that basic stochastic processing techniques should be scrutinized with caution and from basic to elaborated techniques, but they can provide us with useful information on the biosignals from both ventricles during VF.

Although induction motors (IMs) are robust and reliable electrical machines, they can suffer different faults due to usual operating conditions such as abrupt changes in the mechanical load, voltage, and current power quality problems, as well as due to extended operating conditions. In the literature, different faults have been investigated; however, the broken rotor bar has become one of the most studied faults since the IM can operate with apparent normality but the consequences can be catastrophic if the fault is not detected in low-severity stages. In this work, a methodology based on convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for automatic detection of broken rotor bars by considering different severity levels is proposed. To exploit the capabilities of CNNs to carry out automatic image classification, the short-time Fourier transform-based time-frequency plane and the motor current signature analysis (MCSA) approach for current signals in the transient state are first used. In the experimentation, four IM conditions were considered: half-broken rotor bar, one broken rotor bar, two broken rotor bars, and a healthy rotor. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposal, achieving 100% of accuracy in the diagnosis task for all the study cases.

This work presents a method for estimating the model parameters of multi-rotor unmanned aerial vehicles by means of an extended Kalman filter. Different from test-bed based identification methods, the proposed approach estimates all the model parameters of a multi-rotor aerial vehicle, using a single online estimation process that integrates measurements that can be obtained directly from onboard sensors commonly available in this kind of UAV. In order to develop the proposed method, the observability property of the system is investigated by means of a nonlinear observability analysis. First, the dynamic models of three classes of multi-rotor aerial vehicles are presented. Then, in order to carry out the observability analysis, the state vector is augmented by considering the parameters to be identified as state variables with zero dynamics. From the analysis, the sets of measurements from which the model parameters can be estimated are derived. Furthermore, the necessary conditions that must be satisfied in order to obtain the observability results are given. An extensive set of computer simulations is carried out in order to validate the proposed method. According to the simulation results, it is feasible to estimate all the model parameters of a multi-rotor aerial vehicle in a single estimation process by means of an extended Kalman filter that is updated with measurements obtained directly from the onboard sensors. Furthermore, in order to better validate the proposed method, the model parameters of a custom-built quadrotor were estimated from actual flight log data. The experimental results show that the proposed method is suitable to be practically applied.

Quantum chaos is presented as a paradigm of information processing by dynamical systems at the bottom of the range of phase-space scales. Starting with a brief review of classical chaos as entropy flow from micro- to macro-scales, I argue that quantum chaos came as an indispensable rectification, removing inconsistencies related to entropy in classical chaos: bottom-up information currents require an inexhaustible entropy production and a diverging information density in phase-space, reminiscent of Gibbs' paradox in statistical mechanics. It is shown how a mere discretization of the state space of classical models already entails phenomena similar to hallmarks of quantum chaos and how the unitary time evolution in a closed system directly implies the "quantum death" of classical chaos. As complementary evidence, I discuss quantum chaos under continuous measurement. Here, the two-way exchange of information with a macroscopic apparatus opens an inexhaustible source of entropy and lifts the limitations implied by unitary quantum dynamics in closed systems. The infiltration of fresh entropy restores permanent chaotic dynamics in observed quantum systems. Could other instances of stochasticity in quantum mechanics be interpreted in a similar guise? Where observed quantum systems generate randomness, could it result from an exchange of entropy with the macroscopic meter? This possibility is explored, presenting a model for spin measurement in a unitary setting and some preliminary analytical results based on it.

Las hiperbilirrubinemias hereditarias (HBH) son patologías originadas por defectos en las enzimas y proteínas que participan del metabolismo de la bilirrubina. El clearence de bilirrubina incluye captación y almacenamiento en hepatocitos, conjugación, excreción hacia la bilis y recaptura de su forma conjugada por hepatocitos. Las HBH varían de acuerdo a su patogenia, presentación clínica, niveles de bilirrubinemia y tratamientos disponibles. En general son poco frecuentes, a excepción del Síndrome de Gilbert. Están las que son de predominio indirecto, como el Síndrome de Gilbert y el de Crigler-Najjar, y las de predominio directo, como el Síndrome de Dubin-Johnson y el de Rotor. En general no requieren tratamiento específico y tienen curso benigno, a excepción del Síndrome de Crigler-Najjar para el cual existen medidas terapéuticas específicas a considerar, teniendo un pronóstico reservado para algunas de sus formas de presentación. Es importante el conocimiento de estos síndromes dado el alto índice de sospecha requerido para su diagnóstico y para su diferenciación de otras patologías hepatobiliares de mayor riesgo y severidad.


Hereditary hiperbilirrubinemias (HBH) are pathologies originated from the defect of the enzymes and proteins involved in the metabolism of bilirubin. The bilirubin clearance includes uptake and storage in hepatocytes, conjugation, excretion into bile and recapture of its conjugated form by hepatocytes. HBH vary according to their pathogenesis, clinical presentation, levels of bilirubin and available treatments. Generally they are infrequent, except for Gilbert Syndrome. There are those with indirect bilirubin predominance, such as Gilbert and Crigler-Najjar syndromes, and those with direct bilirubin predominance, including Dubin-Johnson and Rotor syndromes. In general, they do not require specific treatment and have a benign course, with the exception of the Crigler-Najjar Syndrome, for which there are specific therapeutic measures to consider, as well as a reserved prognosis for some of their forms of presentation. The knowledge of these syndromes is important 2 given the high index of suspicion required for its diagnosis and for its differentiation from other hepatobiliary pathologies of greater risk and severity.

The mechanisms of atrial fibrillation (AF) are a challenging research topic. The rotor hypothesis states that the AF is sustained by a reentrant wave that propagates around an unexcited core. Cardiac tissue heterogeneities, both structural and cellular, play an important role during fibrillatory dynamics, so that the ionic characteristics of the currents, their spatial distribution and their structural heterogeneity determine the meandering of the rotor. Several studies about rotor dynamics implement the standard diffusion equation. However, this mathematical scheme carries some limitations. It assumes the myocardium as a continuous medium, ignoring, therefore, its discrete and heterogeneous aspects. A computational model integrating both, electrical and structural properties could complement experimental and clinical results. A new mathematical model of the action potential propagation, based on complex fractional order derivatives is presented. The complex derivative order appears of considering the myocardium as discrete-scale invariant fractal. The main aim is to study the role of a myocardial, with fractal characteristics, on atrial fibrillatory dynamics. For this purpose, the degree of structural heterogeneity is described through derivatives of complex order γ = α + jß. A set of variations for γ is tested. The real part α takes values ranging from 1.1 to 2 and the imaginary part ß from 0 to 0.28. Under this scheme, the standard diffusion is recovered when α = 2 and ß = 0. The effect of γ on the action potential propagation over an atrial strand is investigated. Rotors are generated in a 2D model of atrial tissue under electrical remodeling due to chronic AF. The results show that the degree of structural heterogeneity, given by γ, modulates the electrophysiological properties and the dynamics of rotor-type reentrant mechanisms. The spatial stability of the rotor and the area of its unexcited core are modulated. As the real part decreases and the imaginary part increases, simulating a higher structural heterogeneity, the vulnerable window to reentrant is increased, as the total meandering of the rotor tip. This in silico study suggests that structural heterogeneity, described by means of complex order derivatives, modulates the stability of rotors and that a wide range of rotor dynamics can be generated.

As a new category of solids, crystalline materials constructed with amorphous building blocks expand the structure categorization of solids, for which designing such new structures and understanding the corresponding formation mechanisms are fundamentally important. Unlike previous reports, new amorphous carbon clusters constructed ordered carbon phases are found here by compressing C8 H8 /C60 cocrystals, in which the highly energetic cubane (C8 H8 ) exhibits unusual roles as to the structure formation and transformations under pressure. The significant role of C8 H8 is to stabilize the boundary interactions of the highly compressed or collapsed C60 clusters which preserves their long-range ordered arrangement up to 45 GPa. With increasing time at high pressure, the gradual random bonding between C8 H8 and carbon clusters, due to "energy release" of highly compressed cubane, leads to the loss of the ability of C8 H8 to stabilize the carbon cluster arrangement. Thus a transition from short-range disorder to long-range disorder (amorphization) occurs in the formed material. The spontaneous bonding reconstruction most likely results in a 3D network in the material, which can create ring cracks on diamond anvils.

With the widespread use of electric machines, there is a growing need to extract information from the machines to improve their control systems and maintenance management. The present work shows the development of an embedded system to perform the monitoring of the rotor physical variables of a squirrel cage induction motor. The system is comprised of: a circuit to acquire desirable rotor variable(s) and value(s) that send it to the computer; a rectifier and power storage circuit that converts an alternating current in a continuous current but also stores energy for a certain amount of time to wait for the motor's shutdown; and a magnetic generator that harvests energy from the rotating field to power the circuits mentioned above. The embedded system is set on the rotor of a 5 HP squirrel cage induction motor, making it difficult to power the system because it is rotating. This problem can be solved with the construction of a magnetic generator device to avoid the need of using batteries or collector rings and will send data to the computer using a wireless NRF24L01 module. For the proposed system, initial validation tests were made using a temperature sensor (DS18b20), as this variable is known as the most important when identifying the need for maintenance and control systems. Few tests have shown promising results that, with further improvements, can prove the feasibility of using sensors in the rotor.

Catalytic combustion is a well-developed process for the removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In order to reduce both the amount of catalyst needed for incineration and the surface area of recuperative heat exchangers, an evaluation of the use of thermal swing adsorption as a previous step for VOC concentration is made. An air stream containing ethyl acetate and ethanol (employed as solvents in printing processes) has been taken as a case study. Based on the characteristics of the adsorption/desorption system and the properties of the stream to be treated, a monolithic rotor concentrator with activated carbon as adsorbent material is adopted. Once the temperature of the inlet desorption stream TD is chosen, the minimum possible desorption flow rate, WD,min, and the amount of adsorbent material can be properly defined according to the extent of the Mass Transfer Zone (MTZ) at the end of the adsorption stage. An approximate procedure to speed up the calculations needed for sizing the bed and predicting the operating variables is also presented. In the case studied here, the concentration of the VOC stream can reach 6 times that of the primary effluent when TD = 200 °C is chosen.

AIMS: Identification in situ of arrhythmogenic mechanisms could improve the rate of ablation success in atrial fibrillation (AF). Our research group reported that rotors could be located through dynamic approximate entropy (DApEn) maps. However, it is unknown how much the spatial resolution of catheter electrodes could affect substrates localization. The present work looked for assessing the electrograms (EGMs) spatial resolution needed to locate the rotor tip using DApEn maps. METHODS AND RESULTS: A stable rotor in a two-dimensional computational model of human atrial tissue was simulated using the Courtemanche electrophysiological model and implementing chronic AF features. The spatial resolution is 0.4 mm (150 × 150 EGM). Six different lower resolution arrays were obtained from the initial mesh. For each array, DApEn maps were constructed using the inverse distance weighting (IDW) algorithm. Three simple ablation patterns were applied. The full DApEn map detected the rotor tip and was able to follow the small meander of the tip through the shape of the area containing the tip. Inverse distance weighting was able to reconstruct DApEn maps after applying different spatial resolutions. These results show that spatial resolutions from 0.4 to 4 mm accurately detect the rotor tip position. An ablation line terminates the rotor only if it crosses the tip and ends at a tissue boundary. CONCLUSION: A previous work has shown that DApEn maps successfully detected simulated rotor tips using a high spatial resolution. In this work, it was evinced that DApEn maps could be applied using a spatial resolution similar to that available in commercial catheters, by adding an interpolation stage. This is the first step to translate this tool into medical practice with a view to the detection of ablation targets.

La fibrilación auricular (FA) es la arritmia más común en la práctica clínica y por la que más se consulta en los servicios médicos. Recientemente, se ha propuesto un mecanismo de mantenimiento de la FA, el cual consiste en la existencia de uno o varios rotores que activan el tejido a alta frecuencia. La ablación es uno de los tratamientos para la FA, en FA crónica son necesarios patrones de ablación complejos, por lo que actualmente se busca el patrón ideal con un mínimo número de líneas de ablación. En este trabajo se simula la actividad de un rotor en un modelo 2D de tejido auricular humano, bajo condiciones de FA crónica y se localiza su centro de giro (tip). Se proponen y evalúan seis diferentes patrones simples de ablación compuestos por un número reducido de líneas. El estudio demostró que aquellos patrones que atraviesan o encierran el tip del rotor y que adicionalmente se prolongan hasta una frontera de conducción son eficaces en la terminación del rotor.


Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in clinical practice and the most consulted in medical services. Recently it has been proposed a mechanism for maintaining the AF, which consists in one or more rotors activating the tissue at high frequency. Ablation is one of the treatments for AF, for chronic AF is needed complex ablation patterns, so currently it has been looking for an ideal pattern with a minimum number of ablation lines. In this work activity of a rotor was simulated in a 2D model of human atrial tissue, under chronic AF conditions, and the center of rotation (tip) was located. Six different simple ablation patterns composed of a limited number of lines were proposed and evaluated. The study showed that those patterns that passed through or encloses the tip of the rotor and additionally were extended to a conduction boundary are effective in the termination of the rotor.

Recentemente, é proposto um mecanismo para a manutenção da FA, que é a existência de um ou mais rotores que activam o tecido com elevada frequência. A ablação é um tratamento para fibrilação atrial em padrões crônicos de ablação de FA necessárias são complexas, por isso eles estão atualmente buscando o padrão ideal, com um número mínimo de linhas de ablação. Neste documento, a actividade de um rotor é simulada em um modelo em 2D do tecido atrial humano, sob condições de AF crónica e o seu centro de rotação (ponta) está localizado. São propostos e avaliados seis diferentes padrões de ablação individuais compostos de um pequeno número de linhas. O estudo mostrou que as que passam através de padrões ou encerram a ponta do rotor e se estendem para além de um limite de condução são eficazes na cessação do rotor.

RESUMO

INTRODUÇÃO: o plano de tratamento ortodôntico deve considerar fatores como apinhamento dentário, protrusão dentoalveolar, discrepâncias maxilares e necessidade de alteração do perfil facial. Também se deve ter em mente as características de normalidade conforme a raça do paciente. Assim, buscando uma abordagem individual do paciente, em casos limítrofes, a terapia ortodôntica pode ser realizada com ou sem extrações. OBJETIVO: realizar uma revisão da literatura sobre a terapia de redução de esmalte interproximal como uma alternativa de tratamento ortodôntico sem extrações para pacientes considerados limítrofes e exemplificar a técnica a partir do relato de um caso clínico. MÉTODOS: para a execução da redução, usou-se brocas Carbide em alta rotação para a remoção do esmalte, discos Sof-Lex para o acabamento e polimento das superfícies desgastadas e aplicação tópica de fluoretos, visando aumentar a proteção do esmalte. CONCLUSÃO: concluiu-se que a técnica é indicada na resolução de discrepâncias no comprimento do arco dentário de até 8,5mm, a fim de evitar as extrações dentárias em pacientes com bom perfil facial. Preferencialmente, os dentes submetidos à técnica devem ser largos, com forma triangular e paredes de esmalte espessas.


INTRODUCTION: The orthodontic treatment plan must consider factors like dental crowding, dental alveolar protrusion, maxillary discrepancies and the facial profile change necessity. It must be considered that the normal characteristics changes in conformity with the ethnic origin of the patient. Then, searching for the individualization of treatment for each patient, in borderlines cases the orthodontic therapy can be done with or without extractions. AIM: To review the literature about the interproximal enamel reduction therapy as an orthodontic treatment alternative to extractions in this borderline patients and to exemplify the technic with a case report. METHODS: To execute the enamel reduction it was used the high-speed Carbide bur and Sof-Lex discs to polish the striped surfaces, followed by topic application of fluoride to increase enamel protection. CONCLUSION: Technic is indicated to solve discrepancies in the dental arch smaller than 8,5mm, to avoid extractions in patients with good facial profile. It's mandatory that the teeth to be striped must be large, triangular and with thick proximal enamel layers.
