RESUMO

From the most ancient RNAs, which followed an RNY pattern and folded into small hairpins, modern RNA molecules evolved by two different pathways, dubbed Extended Genetic Code 1 and 2, finally conforming to the current standard genetic code. Herein, we describe the evolutionary path of the RNAome based on these evolutionary routes. In general, all the RNA molecules analysed contain portions encoded by both genetic codes, but crucial features seem to be better recovered by Extended 2 triplets. In particular, the whole Peptidyl Transferase Centre, anti-Shine-Dalgarno motif, and a characteristic quadruplet of the RNA moiety of RNAse-P are clearly unveiled. Differences between bacteria and archaea are also detected; in most cases, the biological sequences are more stable than their controls. We then describe an evolutionary trajectory of the RNAome formation, based on two complementary evolutionary routes: one leading to the formation of essentials, while the other complemented the molecules, with the cooperative assembly of their constituents giving rise to modern RNAs.

RESUMO

The pressing challenges in waste management have motivated this comprehensive study examining prior research and contemporary trends concerning innovation and waste management. A meticulous investigation of 2264 documents (1968-2024) was conducted using bibliometrix R-tool to analyse Scopus and Web of Science databases, offering a holistic global perspective. Heightened societal concern about waste management, driven by soaring waste production from consumption patterns, requires urgent exploration of effective waste elimination and transformation systems. This study provides a comprehensive summary of the topic, delving deeply into its complexities. Through thorough analysis of global trends, it constitutes a significant stride towards identifying effective solutions, offering valuable contributions to both scientific understanding and practical applications. This research pioneers a comprehensive synthesis of innovation and waste management issues, showcasing originality and substantial contributions. The identified collaborative networks expose a lack of transnational cooperation, potentially hindering waste management innovation. Future research around waste management innovation should focus on synergies among competitors within the same industry and across industries to minimize waste and maximize resource utilization, 4.0 technologies, global waste chain impacts and challenges along with solutions for developing countries.

RESUMO

Background The use of artificial intelligence (AI) is not a recent phenomenon, but the latest advancements in this technology are making a significant impact across various fields of human knowledge. In medicine, this trend is no different, although it has developed at a slower pace. ChatGPT is an example of an AI-based algorithm capable of answering questions, interpreting phrases, and synthesizing complex information, potentially aiding and even replacing humans in various areas of social interest. Some studies have compared its performance in solving medical knowledge exams with medical students and professionals to verify AI accuracy. This study aimed to measure the performance of ChatGPT in answering questions from the Progress Test from 2021 to 2023. Methodology An observational study was conducted in which questions from the 2021 Progress Test and the regional tests (Southern Institutional Pedagogical Support Center II) of 2022 and 2023 were presented to ChatGPT 3.5. The results obtained were compared with the scores of first- to sixth-year medical students from over 120 Brazilian universities. All questions were presented sequentially, without any modification to their structure. After each question was presented, the platform's history was cleared, and the site was restarted. Results The platform achieved an average accuracy rate in 2021, 2022, and 2023 of 69.7%, 68.3%, and 67.2%, respectively, surpassing students from all medical years in the three tests evaluated, reinforcing findings in the current literature. The subject with the best score for the AI was Public Health, with a mean grade of 77.8%. Conclusions ChatGPT demonstrated the ability to answer medical questions with higher accuracy than humans, including students from the last year of medical school.

RESUMO

Post-genomic implementations have expanded the experimental strategies to identify elements involved in the regulation of transcription initiation. Here, we present for the first time a detailed analysis of the sources of knowledge supporting the collection of transcriptional regulatory interactions (RIs) of Escherichia coli K-12. An RI groups the transcription factor, its effect (positive or negative) and the regulated target, a promoter, a gene or transcription unit. We improved the evidence codes so that specific methods are incorporated and classified into independent groups. On this basis we updated the computation of confidence levels, weak, strong, or confirmed, for the collection of RIs. These updates enabled us to map the RI set to the current collection of HT TF-binding datasets from ChIP-seq, ChIP-exo, gSELEX and DAP-seq in RegulonDB, enriching in this way the evidence of close to one-quarter (1329) of RIs from the current total 5446 RIs. Based on the new computational capabilities of our improved annotation of evidence sources, we can now analyze the internal architecture of evidence, their categories (experimental, classical, HT, computational), and confidence levels. This is how we know that the joint contribution of HT and computational methods increase the overall fraction of reliable RIs (the sum of confirmed and strong evidence) from 49% to 71%. Thus, the current collection has 3912 reliable RIs, with 2718 or 70% of them with classical evidence which can be used to benchmark novel HT methods. Users can selectively exclude the method they want to benchmark, or keep for instance only the confirmed interactions. The recovery of regulatory sites in RegulonDB by the different HT methods ranges between 33% by ChIP-exo to 76% by ChIP-seq although as discussed, many potential confounding factors limit their interpretation. The collection of improvements reported here provides a solid foundation to incorporate new methods and data, and to further integrate the diverse sources of knowledge of the different components of the transcriptional regulatory network. There is no other genomic database that offers this comprehensive high-quality architecture of knowledge supporting a corpus of transcriptional regulatory interactions.

RESUMO

This work aims to characterize religious and secular moralities in the West from a critical-diachronic point of view, seeking to identify spaces that cover moral relativism in solving complex bioethics issues. Concerns such as the destination of surplus embryos, for instance, usually raise polarized positionings without consensual solutions. With the presuppositions introduced on western culture through several events, mainly the principle of laicity, the view of morality widened. This work is reflexive, meta-ethical, with an interdisciplinary approach. It is a national and international literature review regarding the main points on religious and secular morality. We concluded that the present moral overview certainly includes moral relativism based on essential morality, one which can be represented by moral strangers and moral friends.

In this work, we formulate the following question: How the distribution of aminoacyl-tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) went from an ancestral bidirectional gene (mirror symmetry) to the symmetrical distribution of aaRSs in a six-dimensional hypercube of the Standard Genetic Code (SGC)? We assume a primeval RNY code, two Extended Genetic RNA codes type 1 and 2, and the SGC. We outline the types of symmetries of the distribution of aaRSs in each code. The symmetry groups of aaRSs in each code are described, until the symmetries of the SGC display a mirror symmetry. Considering both Extended RNA codes the 20 aaRSs were already present before the Last Universal Ancestor. These findings reveal intricacies in the diversification of aaRSs accompanied by the evolution of the genetic code.

RESUMO

With the rapid development of digital signal processing tools, image contents can be easily manipulated or maliciously tampered with. Fragile watermarking has been largely used for content authentication purposes. This article presents a new proposal for image fragile watermarking algorithms for tamper detection and image recovery. The watermarked bits are obtained from the parity bits of an error-correcting code whose message is formed from a binary chaotic sequence (generated from a secret key known to all legitimate users) and from bits of the original image. Part of the codeword (the chaotic bits) is perfectly known to these users during the extraction phase, adding security and robustness to the watermarking method. The watermarked bits are inserted at specific sub-bands of the discrete wavelet transform of the original image and are used as authentication bits for the tamper detection process. The imperceptibility, detection, and recovery of this algorithm are tested for various common attacks over digital images. The proposed algorithm is analyzed for both grayscale and colored images. Comparison results reveal that the proposed technique performs better than some existing methods.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT The Medical Malacology Collection (Fiocruz-CMM) was inaugurated in 1993 and is located at the René Rachou Institute in Fiocruz (Belo Horizonte, MG, Brazil). The collection has about 16,000 limnic mollusks of medical and veterinary importance. Information about each specimen is stored in an electronic Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and is available on the Centro de Referência em Informação Ambiental (CRIA) webpage. A QR Code system was implemented for convenience: it can be printed in reduced format with flexible representation on different surfaces and has a low cost of implantation. A script in PHP language was developed to load the spreadsheet in XLS format using an open-license library, PHP-ExcelReader. A PHP script was created to read and process this spreadsheet line by line and generate individual HTML pages, which were formatted with the Bootstrap tool. Then, the PHP QR code was used to create the images of the QR codes corresponding to each specimen. The QR codes were printed and affixed to the lids of the bottles containing each specimen. Using a device with a camera and internet access, the QR code redirects to the file with the information for each mollusk. The use of QR codes at Fiocruz-CMM facilitates the organization of the collection and allows quick and easy access to information about each specimen.

Abstract In the disaster scenario witnessed during the pandemic caused by COVID-19, the act of defining the underlying cause of a death was no trivial matter and the increased use of Garbage Codes (poorly defined or not very specific codes) raises concerns regarding the quality of the information on causes of death in the states of Brazil. There was a significant increase in the number of deaths during the pandemic in the state of Paraíba, located in the Northeast region of Brazil, a situation similar to the national context. There were 31,107 deaths in 2020 in Paraíba, while an average of 27,000 deaths were identified for the period 2015 to 2019. Our goal was to identify and measure the excess of deaths classified with Garbage Codes in the COVID-19 pandemic in the geographic space of the state of Paraíba in 2020. The time series of deaths were obtained from the Mortality Monitoring Panel for Unspecific or Incomplete Basic Causes (Garbage Codes) of the Ministry of Health, for all months of the years 2015 to 2020. Projections of total deaths and deaths by Garbage Codes (GC) were calculated. The calculation of the excess proportion of deaths classified by Garbage Codes in the state of Paraíba resulted in 8.58%, highlighting the month of June 2020, which reached the maximum value equal to 19.42%. We expect to contribute to advance knowledge regarding the current reality of quality information on death notifications in an area of the country that seeks to make progress in this direction and to highlight the need for research in other locations in Brazil.

Despite the implementation of the Law on Intercultural Bilingual Education for Indigenous Peoples in Latin America, few countries have considered elements of their customs to build a true education in terms of interculturality. Recognizing the characteristics of each People, admits to approach the cultures under an education that affects in an accurate way in each individual. Each culture is identified through codes structured in years of history, giving identity to each People. Building education through these codes will allow under the space that represents them, to design it in terms that identify their ethnicity. Rural and indigenous populations in particular are scattered throughout the national territory, which greatly hinders the scope of education for all, and the Indigenous University of Venezuela does not escape that reality. Therefore, it is intended with this work to make a model of distance education using the codes that give it identity, designing the space that represents them, through the virtual classroom under the training program for graduates in intercultural health(AU)

RESUMO

Abstract Introduction: Professional deontology can be defined as a set of principles, values and rules of conduct to be applied in the exercise of functions and inherent to a given profession. Nephrology was one of the medical specialties most affected by the mismatch between the accelerated technological development and the ethical dilemmas resulting from it. Recently, the Brazilian Society of Nephrology (SBN) edited its code of conduct, which until then did not exist. Method: Qualitative study with content analysis of the chapters and articles of the SBN Code of Conduct, from the perspective of principlism bioethics. Results: The four moral principles of beneficence, non-maleficence, autonomy and justice were found asymmetrically throughout the document, with beneficence predominating over the others. Discussion: The SBN Code of Conduct predominantly expresses the ethical duties that an associate must comply with, but also restrictions on malfeasance, autonomy and justice, anchoring decision-making by managers and including the distribution of possible punishments. It is an unfinished document; therefore, it must be periodically revised, as expected, due to the rapid technological changes, as well as the need for constructive moderation in the relations of nephrologists with each other and, between them, with the Industry, as well as all the ethical consequences arising from these factors.

Abstract The new Medical Code of Ethics entered into force in 2019, with the Resolution CFM 2.217/2018. This article focusses on the directives of this document, seeking to identify if they reflect changes in the Society and how the ethical concepts taught during training impact the professional practice. Of qualitative character of primary and secondary data, the sample comprised 15 semi-structured interviews selected with by snowball sampling. The participants are doctors of the residency program of the Complex of the Clinical Hospital of the Federal University of Paraná. We understood that the precepts of the code adhere to human rights and to bioethics. Furthermore, the ethics taught during training was insufficient for the professionals. We concluded that, for having force of law and being based on moral principles, the Medical Code of Ethics fosters the normalization of the medical action; however, a medical conduct based on the ethical directives requires a professional update.

PURPOSE: Propose a way of coding and qualifying HRQoL following a stroke using the codes and qualifiers of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). METHODS: An observational, cross-sectional study was conducted involving 51 individuals with hemiparesis resulting from a stroke. ICF codes related to the Stroke Specific Quality of Life (SS-QOL) scale were listed and subsequently classified using the generic ICF qualifiers, which range from .0 - no impairment to .4 - complete impairment. A simple mathematic calculation was proposed to convert the SS-QOL scores into ICF qualifiers. RESULTS: The use of the ICF qualifiers revealed that the individuals exhibited a moderate level (.2) of quality of life, with mild impairment (.1) regarding upper limb function, language, self-care, and vision as well as severe impairment (.3) regarding social relations. CONCLUSIONS: The proposal presented in this study allowed qualifying 43 ICF codes related to quality of life after a stroke in a simple, standardized manner, enabling the identification of different levels of impairment on each of the domains of the SS-QOL scale. This coding standardizes the evaluation, facilitates communication between healthcare providers, and systematizes the collection of data and information on health.Implications for rehabilitationProposal for qualifying concepts related to body functions, activity & participation, and environmental factors in a simple, standardized manner. The proposed mathematic calculation is simple and easy to understand, which minimizes the occurrence of errors.Possibility to identify different levels of impairment in each of the domains of the Stroke Specific Quality of Life scale, facilitating the establishment of individualized, longitudinal care. The ICF codes standardize the evaluation, facilitate communication between healthcare providers, and systematize the collection of data and information on health and functioning.

RESUMO

The consolidation of technology as an alternative strategy to cadaveric dissection for teaching anatomy in medical courses was accelerated by the recent Covid-19 pandemic, which caused the need for social distance policies and the closure of laboratories and classrooms. Consequently, new technologies were created, and those already been developed started to be better explored. However, information about many of these instruments and resources is not available to anatomy teachers. This systematic review presents the technological means for teaching and learning about human anatomy developed and applied in medical courses in the last ten years, besides the infrastructure necessary to use them. Studies in English, Portuguese, and Spanish were searched in MEDLINE, Scopus, ERIC, LILACS, and SciELO databases, initially resulting in a total of 875 identified articles, from which 102 were included in the analysis. They were classified according to the type of technology used: three-dimensional (3D) printing (n = 22), extended reality (n = 49), digital tools (n = 23), and other technological resources (n = 8). It was made a detailed description of technologies, including the stage of the medical curriculum in which it was applied, the infrastructure utilized, and which contents were covered. The analysis shows that between all technologies, those related to the internet and 3D printing are the most applicable, both in student learning and the financial cost necessary for its structural implementation.

RESUMO

This study examined the determinants of financial literacy (FL) and its impact on access to financial services (AFS), using data collected from rural Ghana. A two-stage residual inclusion model is utilized to address the selection bias issue. The results showed that FL is affected by household heads' age, gender, education, asset ownership, homeownership, and economics education. The results revealed that FL is significant and positively related to AFS, but its square shows an inverse relation with saving mobilization. This indicated a non-linear relationship between FL and AFS. Moreover, we find that FL has a larger AFS impact for households with high-income and male household heads relative to their counterparts. The study recommended that the government can initiate the creation of a rural committee to educate rural residents on financial issues through radio broadcasting and meetings. Our findings highlighted the importance of FL on AFS in enhancing the welfare of rural households.

BACKGROUND: The Ethics Committees of medical associations define standards of conduct to avoid improper professional behavior. AIM: To identify the areas of professional behavior with most allegations of misconduct. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Analysis of all ethical claims received at the Regional Ethics Court of the Chilean Medical Association between 2016 and 2021. RESULTS: Of 323 cases analyzed, 17% of complaints argued a failure in achieving a satisfactory standard of medical care, 15% unprofessional behavior, 14% disruptive interaction among physicians, 12% failure to fulfill therapeutic expectations, 6% poor quality of care, 6% fraud, 6% complains against institutions, 6% sexual misconduct, 6% inappropriate billing, 3% diagnostic errors, 3% inappropriate social behaviors, 1% refusal to provide a sick leave and 1% illegal practice. Only 41.5% of complaints were filed against registered physicians, thus limiting the capabilities of the medical ethical board. CONCLUSIONS: The most common complaints observed were professional misconduct and relationship problems between physicians.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The hyaluronic acid dermal fillers are employed to bring balance and facial harmony, improving the proportions and asymmetries of the structures, besides acting to reverse the signs of facial aging. The periorbital region is one of the first to show the signs of aging with periocular wrinkles, deepening of the nasojugal and palpebromalar folds, prolapse of the fat bags, excess palpebral skin, ptosis of the eyelashes, disappearance of the upper eyelid crease due to excess skin and hollowing of the upper eyelid. AIMS: To describe the lines and grooves of the periorbital region and present a practical guide to the MD CODES™ algorithm for filling this region based on a narrative review of the literature. METHODS: The literature research considered published journal articles (clinical trials or scientific reviews). Studies were identified by searching electronic databases (MEDLINE and PubMed) and reference lists of respective articles. RESULTS: MD CODES™ algorithm maps anatomical points of the face (anatomical codes) that, when treated with fillers, promote instantaneous lifting and rejuvenation. In addition to defining the points for treatment, this method identified the order of the points to be treated, that is, which points should be prioritized to cause greater aesthetic impact. The MD CODES aim to standardize facial rejuvenation and is of particular interest for young as well as more experienced physicians. CONCLUSION: Was presented in detail the regions, the aesthetic effects of the application, the technique, the volume, and the target structure undertaken in the remodeling of the tear trough, periorbital, temporal, brow, and frontal regions.
