RESUMO
Pesticide use in crops is a severe problem in some countries. Each country has its legislation for use, but they differ in the degree of tolerance for these broadly toxic products. Several synthetic pesticides can cause air, soil, and water pollution, contaminating the human food chain and other living beings. In addition, some of them can accumulate in the environment for an indeterminate amount of time. The agriculture sector must guarantee healthy food with sustainable production using environmentally friendly methods. In this context, biological biopesticides from microbes and plants are a growing green solution for this segment. Several pests attack crops worldwide, including weeds, insects, nematodes, and microorganisms such as fungi, bacteria, and viruses, causing diseases and economic losses. The use of bioproducts from microorganisms, such as microbial biopesticides (MBPs) or microorganisms alone, is a practice and is growing due to the intense research in the world. Mainly, bacteria, fungi, and baculoviruses have been used as sources of biomolecules and secondary metabolites for biopesticide use. Different methods, such as direct soil application, spraying techniques with microorganisms, endotherapy, and seed treatment, are used. Adjuvants like surfactants, protective agents, and carriers improve the system in different formulations. In addition, microorganisms are a tool for the bioremediation of pesticides in the environment. This review summarizes these topics, focusing on the biopesticides of microbial origin.
RESUMO
Phosphate fertilizers are applied to the soil surface, especially in vineyards in production in subtropical regions. Nowadays, phosphorus (P) is not incorporated into the soil to avoid mechanical damage to the root system in orchards. However, over the years, successive surface P applications can increase the P content only in the topsoil, maintaining low P levels in the subsurface, which can reduce its use by grapevines. For this reason, there is a need to propose strategies to increase the P content in the soil profile of established orchards. The study aimed to evaluate the effect of management strategies to (i) increase the P content in the soil profile; (ii) enhance the grape production; and (iii) maintain the grape must composition. An experiment on the 'Pinot Noir' grape in full production was carried out over three crop seasons. The treatments were without P application (C), P on the soil surface without incorporation (SP), P incorporated at 20 cm (IP20), P incorporated at 40 cm (IP40), and twice the P dose incorporated at 40 cm (2IP40). The P concentration in leaves at flowering and veraison, P content in the soil, grape production and its components, and chemical parameters of the grape must (total soluble solids, total polyphenols, total titratable acidity, total anthocyanins, and pH) were evaluated. The P concentration in leaves did not differ among the P application modes. The application of P associated with soil mobilization, especially at 20 cm depth, increased grape production. The P application modes did not affect the values of the chemical parameters of the grape must except for the total anthocyanins, which had the highest values when the vines were subjected to 2IP40. Finally, the P application and incorporation into the soil profile was an efficient strategy for increasing the grape production in full production vineyards.
RESUMO
Salvinia auriculata Aublet is a floating aquatic plant, capable of absorbing the excess of nutrients and water contaminants and can be used in effluent treatment plants. The ability to survive in degraded areas may be related to the association with beneficial bacteria capable of promoting plant growth. However, little is known about the microbiota associated with this aquatic plant and its potential application to the aquatic environment. In this sense, this work aims to identify bacteria associated with S. auriculata that could be able to promote plant growth. Eighteen bacterial strains were identified by sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene, belonging to the genera Agrobacterium, Bacillus, Curtobacterium, Enterobacter, Pseudomonas, Siccibacter, and Stenotrophomonas. All isolates produced indole compounds, 12 fixed N2, and 16 solubilized phosphate. A new strain of Enterobacter (sp 3.1.3.0.X.18) was selected for inoculation into S. auriculata. For this purpose, 500 mL of nutrient solution and 1 g of the plant were used in the control and inoculated conditions. Enterobacter inoculation promoted a significant increase (p ≤ 0.05) in fresh plant biomass (17%) after 4 days of cultivation. In summary, the present study characterized 18 plant-growth-promoting bacteria isolated from S. auriculata with potential for biotechnological application, such as the production of bioinoculants or biomass resources, to protect or improve plant growth under conditions of stress.

The Brazilian market holds the second position globally in the beauty sector, poised to surpass the USD 50 billion mark in the upcoming years. Aesthetic procedures encompass a spectrum, ranging from non-invasive ones, such as drainage, radiofrequency, ultrasound, and cryolipolysis, to more invasive techniques, including fillers, botulinum toxin, microneedling, micropigmentation, carboxytherapy, and enzyme application. This wide array of treatments has yielded satisfactory cosmetic results for individuals who opt out of surgical procedures. However, despite being categorized as having low complexity, they still carry inherent risks. These risks are often exacerbated by the breach of the skin barrier, the exposure of organs and spaces, or the presence of implantable devices. Among the bacteria most isolated concerning this matter are non-tuberculous Mycobacteria. This study presents descriptive case reports involving three patients under the care of the Infectious Diseases Department at General Hospital of Roraima (HGR). These patients were diagnosed with Mycobacterium abscessus infections subsequent to undergoing enzyme application procedures. Although these cases involve the same microorganism, they exhibit varying degrees of severity, ranging from the development of locally nodular formations to a progression towards sepsis. These cases provide an opportunity to delve into the diagnostic subtleties and clinical implications of these infections while also prompting a critical evaluation of therapeutic strategies. Additionally, the report underscores the potential risks associated with routine aesthetic procedures.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Digital technology and gamified apps can be useful in the health care context. Gamification uses technology to influence users' actions and motivations through experiences that resemble games. Patient adherence to the enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) program is crucial for achieving early recovery after surgery and continuous monitoring is essential for obtaining good results. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to describe the development and validation of a mobile app for enhanced recovery after surgery (MobERAS), a gamified mobile health app for telemonitoring patients in the postoperative period based on the ERAS program, and to evaluate its functionality and usability and the experience of patients, health care professionals, and computer professionals with its use. METHODS: We developed MobERAS for postoperative telemonitoring, with active participation of patients in the process, and offering availability of real-time information for the health team. The app development process included idealization, interdisciplinary team formation, potential needs assessment, and product deployment. Usability tests were conducted throughout the development process with improvements, technical adjustments, and updates. After finalization, comprehensive verification tests were performed. The parameters evaluated are those that can influence the length of hospital stay, such as nausea, vomiting, pain scales, return to normal gastrointestinal function, and thromboembolic events. MobERAS was designed to be downloaded by users on their phones, tablets, or other mobile devices and to provide postoperative data. The app has a GPS that monitors the patient's walking time and distance and is connected to a virtual database that stores the collected data. RESULTS: Women undergoing medium and major gynecologic oncologic surgeries were included. We included 65 patients with an average age of 53.2 (SD 7.4, range 18-85) years. The time of use ranged from 23.4 to 70 hours (mean 45.1, SD 19.2 hours). Regarding adherence to the use of MobERAS, the mean fill rate was 56.3% (SD 12.1%, range 41.7%-100%), and ambulation data were obtained for 60 (92.3%) of the 65 patients. The researcher had access to the data filled out by the patients in real time. There was good acceptance of the use of MobERAS by the patients, with good evaluation of the app's usability. MobERAS was easy to use and considered attractive because of its gamified design. The app was rated as good or very good in all items by health care professionals (n=20) and professionals specializing in technological innovation (n=10). CONCLUSIONS: MobERAS is easy to use, safe, well accepted by patients, and well evaluated by experts. It can be of great use in clinical surgical practice and an important tool for greater engagement of patients and health care professionals with the ERAS program.
RESUMO
Active management practices to reduce or promote particular vegetation, known as vegetation treatments, are a common part of environmental management and they are conducted for a variety of purposes including wildfire risk mitigation, invasive species management, and ecological restoration. Vegetation treatment for wildfire mitigation in particular have increased dramatically in the Western United States in the past several decades. While vegetation treatments are common, data regarding the timing, location, and type of treatments conducted are often only maintained by the organization that conducted the work, hampering the ability of managers and researchers to understand the distribution and timing of vegetation treatments across a landscape. This dataset is a collection of spatially referenced records of vegetation treatments such as mechanical thinning, prescribed burning, and herbicide applications that were conducted in the state of New Mexico, USA and adjacent parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, and Texas. Spatial data were collected through requests to the regional or state offices for the relevant agencies (e.g., The Bureau of Land Management, the U.S. Forest Service, New Mexico State Forestry Division). The accuracy of this data collection approach was assessed by conducting more intensive data collection in five randomly selected focal watersheds across New Mexico. In these watersheds local offices of the larger agencies were contacted, as well as any smaller groups (e.g., soil and water conservation districts, municipalities, and environmental non-profits), and in person visits were made to gather any information on vegetation treatments possible. The overall dataset includes records of treatments spanning a century and includes records of 9.9 million acres of treatments conducted by more than a dozen different organizations. In the five focal watershed that we surveyed the database contained 7.4 % fewer acres of treated land than the more intensive interview approach. This spatially extensive dataset on vegetation treatments will be useful for researchers quantifying or modelling the effect of vegetation management on fire risk and behaviour. Additionally, this data will be useful to ecologists studying the distribution, movement, and habitat associations of a variety of plant an animal species. Finally, this data will be useful for research on landscape conservation and management.
RESUMO
This study evaluated the use of acerola (Malpighia glabra L., CACE), cashew (Anacardium occidentale L., CCAS), and guava (Psidium guayaba L., CGUA) fruit processing coproducts as substrates to promote the growth, metabolite production, and maintenance of the viability/metabolic activity of the probiotics Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-05 and Lacticaseibacillus paracasei L-10 during cultivation, freeze-drying, storage, and exposure to simulated gastrointestinal digestion. Probiotic lactobacilli presented high viable counts (≥8.8 log colony-forming units (CFU)/mL) and a short lag phase during 24 h of cultivation in CACE, CCAS, and CGUA. Cultivation of probiotic lactobacilli in fruit coproducts promoted sugar consumption, medium acidification, and production of organic acids over time, besides increasing the of several phenolic compounds and antioxidant activity. Probiotic lactobacilli cultivated in fruit coproducts had increased survival percentages after freeze-drying and during 120 days of refrigerated storage. Moreover, probiotic lactobacilli cultivated and freeze-dried in fruit coproducts had larger subpopulations of live and metabolically active cells when exposed to simulated gastrointestinal digestion. The results showed that fruit coproducts not only improved the growth and helped to maintain the viability and metabolic activity of probiotic strains but also enriched the final fermented products with bioactive compounds, being an innovative circular strategy for producing high-quality probiotic cultures.

OBJECTIVES: To answer whether the topical drug application can reduce in-office tooth bleaching sensitivity without impairing the color change. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This review was registered on PROSPERO (CRD42024524171). Two reviewers screened PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and clinicaltrials.gov in March 2024 independently for randomized clinical trials investigating the efficacy of topical drug application to manage in-office tooth bleaching sensitivity. The risk of bias was assessed using Cochrane's Risk of Bias tool (RoB2). Certainty of the evidence was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations: Assessment, Development, and Evaluation tool (GRADE). The meta-analyses evaluated the bleaching sensitivity and color change with RevMan 5.4 software. RESULTS: 334 articles were retrieved. The final sample was composed of four articles. Tested drugs were Otosporin, Eugenol, Ibuprofen with arginine, and Dipyrone. The meta-analysis evidenced no difference in bleaching sensitivity up to 1 h (MD, -0.39; 95% CI, -0.89, 0.11), 24 h (MD, -0.26, 95% CI, -0.71, 0.18), or 48 h (MD, 0.00, 95% CI, -0.16, 0.16). Meta-analysis for color change evidenced no difference for color change (MD, 0.03; 95% IC, -0.56, 0.61). The risk of bias was low. The certainty of the evidence was rated moderate for bleaching sensitivity and high for color change. CONCLUSIONS: Although topical drug application did not impair color change, it was ineffective in reducing in-office tooth bleaching sensitivity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: topical drug application on dental enamel is not an effective approach in reducing bleaching sensitivity, but several modifications can be made in future studies to possibly achieve a better outcome.

Introduction: This study in Argentina evaluated the impact of the growzen™ buddy smartphone app on adherence to recombinant human growth hormone (r-hGH) treatment. Methods: The adherence data, invitation dates with a link to the app, app activation dates, and height measurements entered were extracted from the growzen™ digital health ecosystem. Patients with 12 months of adherence data, aged ≥2 years at treatment start, and aged <19 years were selected both before and after app implementation. Mean adherence was classified as optimal (≥85%) versus suboptimal (<85%). Adherence before and after implementation and the pre-post effect on adherence were assessed. Results: Data for 830 patients were available. Prior to app implementation, the proportion of patients with optimal adherence was 68% (n = 348/515). Following the app implementation, out of 315 patients, 302 (96%) received an invitation with a link to the app, 225 (71%) activated their account, and 127 (40%) entered height data in the first year. There was a significant early increase in the proportion of patients with optimal adherence following implementation: 82% (n = 258/315), p < 0.001. After implementation, the proportion of patients with optimal adherence included 80% (n = 78/98) of those with an active account who did not enter height measurements and 89% (n = 113/127) of those who did. There was a significant and positive pre-post app effect on adherence (p < 0.01) in patients with an active account. Discussion: Our results show that using the growzen™ buddy app has a rapid and positive impact on adherence to r-hGH treatment, and patients who were more engaged with the app demonstrated better adherence.

Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) instability poses a considerable challenge in traumatology and orthopedic medicine, demanding precise diagnostics for optimal treatment. The pivot-shift test, a pivotal assessment tool, relies on subjective interpretation, emphasizing the need for supplementary imaging. This study addresses this limitation by introducing a machine learning classification algorithm integrated into a mobile application, leveraging smartphones' built-in inertial sensors for dynamic rotational stability assessment during knee examinations. Orthopedic specialists conducted knee evaluations on a cohort of 52 subjects, yielding valuable insights. Quantitative analyses, employing the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient (ICC), demonstrated robust agreement in both intraobserver and interobserver assessments. Specifically, ICC values of 0.94 reflected strong concordance in the timing between maneuvers, while signal amplitude exhibited consistency, with the ICC ranging from 0.71 to 0.66. The introduced machine learning algorithms proved effective, accurately classifying 90% of cases exhibiting joint hypermobility. These quantifiable results underscore the algorithm's reliability in assessing knee stability. This study emphasizes the practicality and effectiveness of implementing machine learning algorithms within a mobile application, showcasing its potential as a valuable tool for categorizing signals captured by smartphone inertial sensors during the pivot-shift test.
RESUMO
BACKGROUND: Typical propagation-based X-ray phase contrast imaging (PB-PCI) experiments using polyenergetic sources are tested in very ideal conditions: low-energy spectrum (mainly characteristic X-rays), small thickness and homogeneous materials considered weakly absorbing objects, large object-to-detector distance, long exposure times and non-clinical detector. OBJECTIVE: Explore PB-PCI features using boundary conditions imposed by a low power polychromatic X-ray source (X-ray spectrum without characteristic X-rays), thick and heterogenous materials and a small area imaging detector with high low-detection radiation threshold, elements commonly found in a clinical scenario. METHODS: A PB-PCI setup implemented using a microfocus X-ray source and a dental imaging detector was characterized in terms of different spectra and geometric parameters on the acquired images. Test phantoms containing fibers and homogeneous materials with close attenuation characteristics and animal bone and mixed soft tissues (bio-sample models) were analyzed. Contrast to Noise Ratio (CNR), system spatial resolution and Kerma values were obtained for all images. RESULTS: Phase contrast images showed CNR up to 15% higher than conventional contact images. Moreover, it is better seen when large magnifications (>3) and object-to-detector distances (>13âcm) were used. The influence of the spectrum was not appreciable due to the low efficiency of the detector (thin scintillator screen) at high energies. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the clinical boundary condition used in this work, regarding the X-ray spectrum, thick samples, and detection system, it was possible to acquire phase contrast images of biological samples.

BACKGROUND: Moderately vigorous physical activity (PA) may be beneficial for people with sub-acute low back pain (LBP), but may initially be painful for patients and challenging for physical therapists to facilitate. OBJECTIVES: This study investigated motivational interviewing (MI) delivered by physical therapists and a smartphone app for increasing PA in people with LBP. METHODS: A mixed methods cluster randomised controlled trial involving 46 adults with LBP in Melbourne, Australia. Participants attended weekly 30-min physical therapy consultations for 6 weeks. Experimental group physical therapists were taught to embed MI into consultations and patients were provided with a self-directed app. The primary outcome was accelerometer-derived moderately vigorous PA. Secondary outcomes were LBP disability (Oswestry Disability Index), functional capacity (Patient Specific Functional Scale), and self-efficacy (Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire). Between-group differences were analysed by ANCOVA post-intervention. RESULTS: There was no statistically significant difference between the experimental group and control group for PA. Between-group differences in LBP disability (MD= 19.4 units, 95% CI: 8.5, 30.3), functional capacity (primary MD= -4.1 units, 95% CI: -6.9, -1.3; average MD= -3.1, 95% CI: -4.9, -1.2) and self-efficacy (MD -11.3 units, 95%CI -20.2, -2.5) favoured the control group with small to moderate effect sizes. There were low levels of overall engagement with the app. CONCLUSION: The embedded MI intervention was no more beneficial than physical therapy alone for PA and was associated with poorer LBP disability, function, and self-efficacy. The effectiveness of embedding MI and a smartphone app into usual care for LBP was not supported.

INTRODUCTION: surgical site infections (SSI) remain a significant cause of morbidity and mortality and one of the most representative causes of nosocomial infections. The use of intrawound vancomycin in lumbar spine surgery is a potential prophylactic measure against SSI; however, evidence regarding its efficacy is contradictory. Our study was designed to research if intrawound vancomycin significantly prevents SSI in lumbar spine surgery. MATERIAL AND METHODS: this is a randomized, double-blinded, controlled clinical trial; 233 patients who underwent lumbar spine surgery, were randomly assigned to a group in which intrawound vancomycin was instilled in the incision before closure (109), or to a control group (114). The main outcome is the presence of SSI; we determined its prevalence and searched for difference between groups for association between SSI and independent variables. RESULTS: global SSI prevalence was 1.8%, in the experimental group was 0.9%, in the control group was 2.6%. There was no significant difference between these values, p = 0.622. The relative risk of SSI in the experimental group was 0.35 (95% CI 0.037-3.30), that of the control group was 2.87 (95% CI 0.30-27.16). The number needed to treat is 58.3. We did not find a significant association between the independent variables studied and the appearance of SSI. CONCLUSIONS: we did not find a significant difference in the prevalence of SSI between groups nor a significant association between SSI and independent variables.

In this paper, we address the challenge of ensuring stability in bipedal walking robots and exoskeletons. We explore the feasibility of real-time implementation for the Predicted Step Viability algorithm (PSV), a complex multi-step optimization criterion for planning future steps in bipedal gait. To overcome the high computational cost of the PSV algorithm, we performed an analysis using 11 classification algorithms and a stacking strategy to predict if a step will be stable or not. We generated three datasets of increasing complexity through PSV simulations to evaluate the classification performance. Among the classifiers, k Nearest Neighbors, Support Vector Machine with Radial Basis Function Kernel, Decision Tree, and Random Forest exhibited superior performance. Multi-Layer Perceptron also consistently performed well, while linear-based algorithms showed lower performance. Importantly, the use of stacking did not significantly improve performance. Our results suggest that the feature vector applied with this approach is applicable across various robotic models and datasets, provided that training data is balanced and sufficient points are used. Notably, by leveraging classifiers, we achieved rapid computation of results in less than 1 ms, with minimal computational cost.
RESUMO
OBJECTIVE: This randomized controlled trial aimed to evaluate the equivalence in the color change, adverse effects, self-perception (AS) and the impact on oral condition (IO) of participants submitted to different application protocols of in-office dental bleaching. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 165 participants were bleached with a 35% hydrogen peroxide gel (Total Blanc Office One-Step, DFL), according to the following protocols: (1) 2 applications of 20-min each (2 × 20 min); (2) 1 × 40-min and; (3) 1 × 30-min. The color change was evaluated with the Vita Easyshade spectrophotometer, Vita Classical and Vita Bleachedguide scales. The intensity and risk of tooth sensitivity (TS) and gingival irritation (GI) were recorded using a 0-10 visual analogue scale (VAS). AS and IO was assessed before and after the bleaching procedure using the Orofacial Aesthetic Scale and Oral Health Impact Profile-14, respectively. RESULTS: Equivalent color change were observed (p < 0.001), with no significant difference between groups. The group 2 × 20 min presented the highest risk of TS (76%, 95% CI 63 to 85), compared to the 1 × 30 min (p < 0.04). The intensity of TS and GI and the risk of GI was similar between groups (p > 0.31). Irrespectively of the group (p = 0.32), significant improvements were observed for all items of AS and IO after bleaching (p < 0.02). CONCLUSIONS: The 1 × 30 min protocol produced equivalent color change to the other bleaching protocols with reduced risk of TS and shorter application time. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: A more simplified application regimen of a single application of 30 min yields effective bleaching and patient satisfaction while minimizing undesirable side effects and improving patient satisfaction.

The use of remotely piloted aircraft (RPA) to spray pesticides currently occurs, but knowledge about this technology is lacking due to the different locations, targets, and products applied. The objective of this study was to evaluate the control of Urochloa decumbens with glyphosate applied using an RPA (10 L ha-1) equipped with different spray nozzles (XR 11001 and AirMix 11001). For the purpose of comparison, ground application was also performed (100 L ha-1). The deposition was evaluated by means of the quantification of a tracer by spectrophotometry, the droplet spectrum was evaluated with water-sensitive paper, and the control efficiency was evaluated based on visual measurements with percentage scores. Statistical process control was used to analyse the quality of the deposition in the area. The results showed that the application via RPA presented a greater amount of tracer on the leaves than the ground application, suggesting that the former is a good option for application, even providing a lower coverage and number of droplets per area. Both application methods were effective at controlling Urochloa decumbens. The nozzles showed potential for use in applications, with control efficiency higher than 84% from 21 days after application. The percentage of droplets smaller than 100 µm in the applications was less than 5%. No nonrandom behaviour was observed during deposition, indicating a high-quality process.
RESUMO
Black rice (Oryza sativa) stands out for its high content of bioactive compounds with functional properties that play an important role in health benefits. The phytochemical level is affected by industrial processing due to its instability to the hydrothermal process. Studies about the influence of industrial processing on the phytochemical profile of black-rice-based foods are still scarce. This study carried out a comprehensive review of the influence of industrial applications on the bioactive compounds in food products based on black rice and their health-promoting effects. Most industrial processes such as drying, storage, cooking, and extrusion affect phytochemical content and antioxidant capacity. OBJECTIVE: Analyze feelings about allergen-specific immunotherapy on Twitter using the VADER model VADER (Valence Aware Dictionary and sEntiment Reasoner) model. METHODS: tweets related to specific allergen immunotherapy were obtained through the Twitter Application Programming Interface (API). The keywords "allergy shot" were used between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2022. The data was processed by removing URLs, usernames, hashtags, multiple spaces, and duplicate tweets. Subsequently, a sentiment analysis was performed using the VADER model. RESULTS: A total of 34,711 tweets were retrieved, of which 1928 were eliminated. Of the remaining 32,783 tweets, 32.41% expressed a negative sentiment, 31.11% expressed a neutral sentiment, and 36.47% expressed a positive sentiment, with an average polarity of 0.02751 (neutral) over the 11-year period. CONCLUSIONS: The average polarity of tweets about allergen-specific immunotherapy is neutral over the 11 years analyzed. There was an annual increase in the average polarity over the years, with 2017, 2018, and 2022 having positive polarity averages. Additionally, the number of tweets decreased over time.
