RESUMO
Highlights are presented of the current state of knowledge on programmed instruction. Essentially it should be thought of as a method of self-instruction, based on an emerging theory of learning, and hence having applicability in any learning situation. Basic research and objective evaluation of the applicability of the method will doubtless continue for many years. Even at this present formative stage, the potential for professional education and training deserves serious attention. Programmed instruction offers a means by which the effectiveness of teaching may be increased with consequent conservation of faculty time, in the case of formal instruction, or staff time in in-service and public education activities
