RESUMO

Abstract Objective: To estimate the prevalence of sleep bruxism and its association with oral health conditions in schoolchildren. Material and Methods: Cross-sectional study carried out in public schools of Tubarão, SC, Brazil with students aged 10 to 15 years. The oral examination was performed in classrooms by dental surgeons, using the WHO criteria. Data on malocclusions, caries and dental trauma, fluorosis, bleeding gums and the presence of dental calculus were collected. For the diagnosis of bruxism, the criterion of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine was adopted. The chi-square test was used to assess the association between sleep bruxism and oral health conditions. Prevalence ratios and confidence intervals were estimated by Poisson regression with robust estimator. Results: A total of 389 students were examined. The prevalence of sleep bruxism was 22.0%. Schoolchildren with malocclusion, increased overjet and dental calculus showed a statistically higher and independent prevalence of 9.0% (p=0.003), 6.0% (p=0.006) and 19.0% (p<0.001), respectively. Conclusion: Prevalence of sleep bruxism was 22% in the study population and was associated with malocclusions, particularly increased overjet, and the presence of dental calculus.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT Objective: To study the impact of dental trauma on the oral health-related quality of life among Brazilian students. Methods: A cross-sectional study involving a representative sample of students of the public schools (n = 435) in a city in southern Brazil was carried out. Data on dental trauma were collected through oral examinations using the O'Brien's criteria (1993) restricted to fractures and avulsions. The Brazilian version of the Oral Impacts on Daily Performances (OIDP) was used in order to collect data on the impact of oral health-related quality of life. Bivariate and multivariate analysis were performed through Poisson log-linear regression with robust estimator with significance levels set at p <0.05. Prevalence ratios (PR) and confidence intervals (95%) were estimated. Results: The prevalence of dental trauma was 7.2%, and it was associated with the following dimensions: performing daily activities [(PR = 3.52 (95% CI, 1.06-11.75)] (p = 0.040), and speaking [(PR = 3.67 (95% CI, 1.24-10.86)] (p = 0.019) after adjusting for sex, age, dental caries and malocclusion. Conclusion: The prevalence of dental trauma found among this population was low, but significantly associated with oral health-related quality of life.

PURPOSE: To estimate the prevalence and severity of malocclusion and test a possible association with negative impacts on quality of life of schoolchildren in Tubarão, Brazil. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on a representative sample (n = 389) of schoolchildren. Data on oral health-related quality of life were obtained through the Oral Impacts on Daily Performance (OIDP) scale. The malocclusion indicator was the Dental Aesthetic Index (DAI). Prevalence ratios were estimated using log-linear Poisson regression with a robust estimator. RESULTS: The prevalence of class II, III, and IV malocclusion was 57.3%. The most common dental condition was overjet greater than 3 mm. Girls and older schoolchildren showed statistically significantly higher prevalence of all classes of malocclusion. There were no statistically significant associations between the most frequent malocclusions and dimensions of the impact indicator, except for the presence of overjet greater than 3 mm that was associated the 'cleaning teeth' dimension. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of malocclusion was high, but was not statistically significantly associated with impact on oral health-related quality of life.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Osteoradionecrosis of the jaw (ORNJ) is the most severe and complex sequel of head and neck radiotherapy (RT) because of the bone involved, it may cause pain, paresthesia, foul odor, fistulae with suppuration, need for extra oral communication and pathological fracture. We treated twenty lesions of ORNJ using low-level laser therapy (LLLT) and antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT). The objective of this study was to stimulate the affected area to homeostasis and to promote the healing of the oral mucosa. METHODS: We performed aPDT on the exposed bone, while LLLT was performed around the bone exposure (red spectrum) and on the affected jaw (infrared spectrum). Monitoring and clinical intervention occurred weekly or biweekly for 2 years. RESULTS: 100% of the sample presented clinical improvement, and 80% presented complete covering of the bone exposure by intact oral mucosa. CONCLUSION: LLLT and aPDT showed positive results as an adjuvant therapy to treat ORNJ.

RESUMO

Trauma in the anterior teeth is a relatively common occurrence during childhood, having as main consequence teeth with incomplete root development and open apices. Patient, male, leucoderma, 10 years old, attended the Dental Clinic of the Southern University of the State of Santa Catarina, reporting as main complaint fracture in the crown of element 11. After clinical and radiographic examination, it was possible to identify the incomplete apexogenesis of this tooth and the presence of necrotic pulp. Aiming to stimulate neoformation of mineralized tissue at the dental apex, the calcium hydroxide based dressing was used. He remained for eight months, always with radiographic control. Apexification was observed radiographically and proved through the use of an instrument introduced inside the canal. The use of calcium hydroxide as intracanal medication for eight months stimulated mineralized tissue neoformation in the apical region of element 11 and allowed endodontic treatment.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of mandibular asymmetry and investigate some associated factors. METHODS: Tomographic images of 952 individuals aged from 18 to 75 years old were analyzed. The investigated outcome was mandibular asymmetry. The explanatory variables included gender, age, absence of posterior teeth, and sagittal jaw relationship of the individuals. Statistical analyses included the chi-squared and the Poisson regression with robust variance. RESULTS: Mandibular asymmetry was present in 17.4% of the sample (95% confidence interval 15.2-20.0). In the bivariate analysis, there was an association between the variables age and sagittal jaw relationship with mandibular asymmetry (P = 0.026 and P = 0.018, respectively). However, in the adjusted regression model, the association with age was not maintained, occurring only an association between sagittal jaw relationship and mandibular asymmetry (P = 0.045), with significant difference between individuals with skeletal Class II and skeletal Class III (P = 0.013). CONCLUSION: Mandibular asymmetry was not independently associated with sex, age, or absence of posterior teeth. The only verified independent association was between mandibular asymmetry and sagittal jaw relationship.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Facial skeletal asymmetry is commonly found in humans and its main characteristic is menton deviation. The literature suggests that occlusal and masticatory problems arising from tooth absence could be related to the development of such asymmetries. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this cross-sectional study was to estimate the prevalence of mandibular skeletal asymmetries and to investigate its association with posterior tooth absences. METHODS: Tomographic images of 952 individuals aged from 18 to 75 years old were used. Asymmetry was the analyzed outcome, and it was categorized into three groups according to gnathion displacement in relation to the midsagittal plane (relative symmetry, moderate asymmetry, and severe asymmetry). Patients were sorted by the presence of all posterior teeth, unilateral posterior tooth absence, or bilateral posterior tooth absence. Chi-square test with a significance level of 5% was used to verify the association between posterior tooth absence and asymmetry. RESULTS: Results show relative symmetry present in 55.3% of the sample, as well as the prevalence of 27.3% for moderate mandibular asymmetry and 17.4% for severe asymmetry. Moderate and severe mandibular asymmetries occurred in a higher proportion in patients with unilateral posterior tooth absence. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the analyzed groups (p = 0.691). CONCLUSIONS: In this study, mandibular asymmetries did not present any association with the absence of teeth on the posterior area of the arch.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the mesiobuccal root of maxillary first molars, according to the root canal configuration, prevalence and location of isthmuses at 3 and 6 mm from the apex, comparing cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis and cross sectioning of roots by thirds. Images of the mesiobuccal root of 100 maxillary first molars were acquired by CBCT and then roots were cross-sectioned into two parts, starting at 3 mm from the apex. Data were recorded and analyzed according to Weine's classification for root canal configuration, and Hsu and Kim's classification for isthmuses. In the analysis of CBCT images, 8 root canals were classified as type I, 57 as type II, 35 as type III. In the cross-sectioning technique, 19 root canals were classified as type I, 60 as type II, 20 as type III and 1 as type IV. The classification of isthmuses was predominantly type I in both CBCT and cross-sectioning evaluations for sections at 3 mm from the apex, while for sections at 6 mm from the apex, the classification of isthmuses was predominantly types V and II in CBCT and cross-sectioning evaluations, respectively. The cross-sectioning technique showed better results in detection of the internal morphology of root canals than CBCT scanning.

To measure dental anxiety in children, determine its association with behavior exhibited during treatment and evaluate the use of informative and aversive behavior management techniques.Material and Methods:Across-sectional study was carried out with 51 children aged 6-12 years submitted to restorative dental procedures at the pediatric dental clinic of the Franciscano University Center (Brazil) between May and December 2013. Anxiety was measured using the Venham Picture Test and behavior during treatment was analyzed using the Frankl Behavior Scale. Variables were submitted to descriptive statistics. The chi-square test was used to determine associations between anxiety and categorical variables, considering associations with p-value p ≤ 0.05 to be statistically significant. Results:Twelve children (23.5%) exhibited anxiety prior to dental procedure. Anxiety was not significantly associated with age (p=0.669), gender (p=0.478), behavior during treatment (p=0.915) or behavioral management techniques (p=0.701). Moreover, no significant association was found between changes in the level of anxiety after procedure and the behavior management techniques used during treatment (p=0.828).Conclusion:A high percentage of children exhibited dental anxiety. However, anxiety prior to dental procedure was not associated with any of the variables analyzed and no association was found between changes in the level of anxiety after procedure and the informative or aversive behavior management techniques used during treatment...

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to verify two different types of interfaces in Morse taper connection implants, relating the mechanical resistance to a loosening torque that is required to separate or move the prosthetic abutment. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten Morse taper connection implants and their respective abutments were divided into two groups (n = 5), DH (double hexagon) interface and OI (octagonal implant) interface. A standard insertion of implants was performed in a stainless steel base, where each abutment received a sequence of two consecutive tightening torques at a 10-minute interval, followed by a loosening torque, which was measured using a digital torque gauge. The Student's t-test with a 5% significance level was used for data analysis. RESULTS: The results showed a statistically significant difference in the loosening torque values compared with DH torque values (p < 0.05). However, the difference between tightening and loosening torque values was not statistically significant in the OI group (p = 0.465). CONCLUSION: The study concluded that there was a difference in the torque required to loosen the abutment screws between the DH group and the OI group, with the latter showing better results.
