RESUMO

The aim of this study was to investigate the correlation between depressive symptoms and the occurrence of oral mucositis in children with oncological diseases treated at a reference hospital. This was a cross-sectional study conducted with individuals aged 4 to 18 years, diagnosed with primary neoplasms. Data was collected by using a questionnaire that assessed the degree of oral mucositis according to the World Health Organization index, the risk of oral mucositis according to the Child's International Mucositis Evaluation Scale, and depressive symptoms using the Children's Depression Inventory. The data were analyzed and subjected to Spearman's correlation, chi-square test, and Fisher's exact test, considering p<0.05. A statistically significant correlation was observed between depressive symptoms and the degree of oral mucositis (p = 0.044), and also between the "pain" variable within the risk of oral mucositis and depressive symptoms (p = 0.021). Based on the findings, it can be inferred that oral mucositis may be associated with the development of depressive symptoms and may be influenced by the individual's hospitalization, thereby affecting the quality of life of pediatric patients.

RESUMO

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the surface roughness among 3 types of glass ionomers (GI) before (no polishing) and after polishing with three different materials. Methods: 20 discs for each GI group were obtained (A-Ionolux; B-IonoStar Plus; C-Ketac). Those groups were subdivided according to finishing and polishing: subgroups 1 (control) - no polishing, 2 - polishing with prophylactic brush and pumice paste, 3 - Enhance tips with water, and 4 - Sof-Lex system with Easy Glaze and polymerization. For each disc face, the total distance analyzed was 2.88cm (6x48mm). Then, the roughness was compared using the Kruskal-Wallis with Bonferroni test, with significant data if p<0.05. Results: The mean of roughness within Group A was lower for subgroup 4 (1.07±0.54 µm) and higher for subgroup 2 (2.33±1.17 µm). Within group B, B4 had the lowest mean of roughness (0.93±0.38 µm) and B2 (1.24 ± 0.78 µm) the highest roughness. Within group C, Group C4 had the lowest mean roughness value (0.84±0.54 µm), and C3 had the highest mean (2.48±1.05 µm). After polishing, subgroup 4 had the general lowest values for surface roughness (mean Ra 0.95), followed by subgroup 1 (Ra=1.27), subgroup 2 (Ra=1.89), and higher values for subgroup 3. All intragroup analysis for A, B, and C were statistically significant. Group A presented the highest roughness (p<0.05), and no statistically significant evidence existed between groups B and C (p>0.05). Conclusion: The reduction of the roughness of the materials is dependent on their composition and the polishing and finishing techniques applied.

RESUMO

Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare clinical periodontal conditions in HIV-positive people on HAART with an HIV-negative group, in addition to investigating factors associated with periodontitis in the entire sample. Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. Data were collected by oral clinical examination for the diagnosis of periodontitis, review of medical records, and application of a questionnaire containing personal data, deleterious habits, and oral hygiene habits for the other variables. The results were analyzed by Pearson's χ 2 test and Student's t-test. A logistic regression model was constructed for the multivariate analysis and periodontitis was defined as a dependent variable. The analysis was performed on the entire sample (HIV+ and HIV-) and also on the group consisting of only people living with HIV. Results: Individuals older than 43 years old and with HIV were more likely to develop moderate and severe periodontitis (47.80 and 4.84 times, respectively). When analyzing only HIV+, in addition to age (OR = 2.795; CI = 1.080-7.233), the use of nonnucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NNRTIs) (OR = 2.841; CI = 1.135-7.112) was also associated with moderate and severe periodontitis. Conclusion: It was possible to observe a higher prevalence of periodontitis among individuals with HIV, showing an association between the virus, advanced age, and moderate or severe periodontitis.

RESUMO

The osteolytic activity of odontogenic cysts and tumors is directly associated with their growth and aggressiveness. The influence of proteins expressed by epithelial and mesenchymal cells on this biological event differs between indolent cystic lesions, aggressive cystic lesions, and odontogenic tumors. The objective of this study was to compare the immunohistochemical expression of factors that stimulate (receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa-Β ligand - RANKL, cathepsin K - CatK and matrix metallopeptidase 8 - MMP-8) and inhibit (osteoprotegerin - OPG) osteoclastogenesis between dentigerous cyst (DC), glandular odontogenic cyst (GOC), odontogenic keratocyst (OKC), and ameloblastoma (AB). Paraffin-embedded sections of nine DCs, nine GOCs, 20 OKCs, 21 ABs, and four dental follicles (DFs) were subjected to immunohistochemistry. Immunoreactivity was analyzed semiquantitatively and quantitatively in epithelium and connective tissue, respectively. The proteins were immunoexpressed in epithelial and mesenchymal cells of all lesions studied. The expression of RANKL and CatK was higher in OKC, AB, and GOC (p<0.005). Higher expression of OPG was found in DF and DC compared to the other markers (p<0.005). MMP-8 expression was high in GOC and OKC. This study demonstrated the differential expression of factors that inhibit and stimulate bone resorption during the development of DC, GOC, OKC, and AB. Higher expression of RANKL and CatK was observed in more aggressive lesions. OPG appears to be one of the molecules responsible for the slower growth of DC.

RESUMO

Muscle weakness is associated with negative outcomes, in addition to being related to the pathogenesis of frailty and functional disability in the older individuals. Muscle strength and functionality are considered biomarkers of aging. Progressive resistance training (PRT) is a type of training that has been the subject of studies as it presents itself as a therapeutic option to fight the reduction of muscle strength and functionality in older individuals. However, few studies have assessed the clinically relevant gains in the levels of muscle strength and functionality of older individuals after PRT, in addition to the need of testing new PRT approaches, including individualization and periodization in training programs. Therefore, this article aims to assess the effect of an individual and periodized PRT protocol on handgrip strength (HS) and functionality in older individuals. Thus, the study sample included 69 older individuals, divided into 2 groups: case (n = 41) and control (n = 28). The case group participated in a PRT protocol for 12 weeks, with two weekly sessions. When compared to the control group, which received only health education, the individuals in the case group had a greater magnitude of improvement in all variables related to the assessed functionality (Timed up and go test, gait speed, and HS), proving the applicability of the assessed protocol to improve strength and functionality in the older individuals of a community.

RESUMO

Abstract Aim: To evaluate the chronic effects of resistance training on resting blood pressure, handgrip strength, gait speed, and Timed Up and Go test (TUG) in normotensive and hypertensive elderly individuals. Methods: Experimental study based on TREND. Hypertensive patients were diagnosed by an independent doctor. Before and after 12 weeks of progressive resistance training, we evaluated blood pressure, heart rate, body composition, Timed Up and Go test, gait speed, and handgrip strength. Results: Sample consisted of 41 participants divided into two groups (normotensive n = 28; hypertensive n = 13). We observed significant values in the reduction of blood pressure levels only in the group of hypertensive participants. In functionality outcomes, we observed significant values in all tests and both groups. Outcomes contemplate effect sizes ranging from small to moderate. Conclusion: Progressive resistance training lowers resting blood pressure levels, increases handgrip strength, and improves physical functional performance. Although the normotensive group did not show a reduction in blood pressure levels, an improvement was observed in the functional physical tests.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the oral and tracheal microbiota of patients admitted to a pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). METHODS AND RESULTS: This is an exploratory study conducted on patients aged 5 months to 13 years admitted to the PICU of a referral hospital. Two microbiological samples were collected with a swab in the posterior region of the tongue from patients receiving spontaneous and mechanical ventilation within the first 24 and 48 h after admission to the PICU. Among patients receiving mechanical ventilation, tracheal secretion was also collected in a second sampling. The caries experience was evaluated using the DMFT/dmf index, and the quality of oral hygiene was assessed based on the visual plaque index (VPI). A questionnaire was applied to obtain data on hospital routine and sample characteristics. The DMFT/dmf index was 1.66 (SD = 2.18) and the mean VPI was 43.03 (SD = 36.93). The most prevalent microorganisms were Klebsiella pneumoniae (15%). Oral colonization by opportunistic pathogens was significantly higher in patients receiving mechanical ventilation compared to those on spontaneous ventilation (p < .05). There was no relationship of VPI or DMFT/dmf with oral microbiological changes. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that PICU patients are susceptible to colonization by respiratory and opportunistic pathogens since the first hours of hospitalization.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify the association between perception of body image and oral health in school bullying among adolescents of an urban locality in Brazil. METHODS: A self-questionnaire was applied on 381 students from public school between 12 and 15 years old. The variables studied were sex, age, schooling, school bullying events, and perception about their oral health and body image. The prevalence of bullying was 29.6%. The multivariate analysis showed that those who indicated that they were criticized due to the condition of their teeth had 4.37 more chance of victimization (oral 4371 CI 2325-8218). Those who felt that oral health had little effect on their relationship with other people had 2.2 times more chance to suffer from bullying (oral 2204 CI 1031-4708) than those who did not. Among adolescents who were not satisfied with their body image, 46.7% had more chance to be a victim of bullying (oral 2467 CI 1373-4431). CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of students affected by bullying was observed. It was possible to observe an association between bullying and dissatisfaction with oral health and body image. It is important to implement and evaluate public policies on oral health, expanding access to and improving these public services offered to the population.

Objective: to evaluate the user profile and level of satisfaction of patients associated with the endodontic treatment of patients treated at the CEO of Camaçari-BA. Material and methods: The study design was cross-sectional, with a population varying from 12 to 20 year old who demanded the service during the period from December 2017 to November 2018 (n=45). Interviews were carried out to identify socio-demographic variables, as well as satisfaction assessment by a validated questionnaire (QASSaB). Statistical analysis of the data was performed, recording the mean and respective standard deviation for the continuous variables and chi-square test (χ2) for the evaluation of possible associations between categorical variables. Results: participants presented a mean age of 16.8 years (±2.067), with an average family income of R$ 972.00 and majority of females (55.6%). Among the treated teeth, 31.1% were molars, 31.1% premolars and 37.8% canines and incisors, most of which belonged to the upper arch (75.6%). The results showed that in general there was a good degree of user satisfaction with the service, but points of less satisfaction were verified, as was the case of accessibility and resolution. In terms of efficacy, patients attended by specialists reported less discomfort during treatment, but this data was not statistically significant (p=0.391). Conclusions: this study has great value since it is possible to establish comparatives and to carry out adequate planning from the identification of the need points of intervention

RESUMO

This integrative literature review aimed to analyze studies about factors associated with the utilization of dental health services by the pediatric population between zero and 15 years old, published between 2006 and 2016 and available in Portuguese, English or Spanish. A survey of articles in the Lilacs and Medline databases was carried out, using the search strategy: ("dental care/utilization" OR "dental health services/utilization") AND ("child" OR "child, preschool") AND NOT adult. To analyze the methodological quality, the adapted Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) and the Agency for Healthcare and Research and Quality (AHRQ) were used. The following predictors of use of dental health services stood out: factors associated with children or adolescents (age, frequency of tooth brushing, chronic conditions), caregivers (schooling, perception of child's dental health, perceived oral health needs), dentists (availability at night and on the weekends) and follow up of oral health by the family health team. These are inherent factors for the planning of oral health policies or programs for the pediatric population. However, these factors vary according to the context, and therefore, a contextual analysis should be conducted.

OR "dental health services/utilization") AND (child OR "child, preschool") AND NOT adult. Para análise da qualidade metodológica, utilizou-se o Critical Appraisal Skill Programme (CASP) adaptado e o Agency for Healthcare and Research and Quality (AHRQ).

AIM: To evaluate the use of the network of oral health services by children and adolescents with leukemia, according to the phase of cancer treatment, type of dental treatment received, and access barriers. METHODS AND RESULTS: An exploratory cross-sectional study carried out in a referral hospital in cancer in northeast of Brazil, with all children and adolescents (3-16 years old) with leukemia who used dental services and who attended the medical consultation in the outpatient clinic between March and August 2016. The analysis of the medical records and a structured interview with caregivers were performed. The majority who used only the specialized network were in a single phase of cancer treatment (49.1%), had oral mucositis treatment (79.2%), and had a time of displacement for oral health services greater than 40 minutes (92.6%). In addition, dental care was centered in the specialized network (76.8%) and during hospitalization (37.7%). CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that the oral health care of these individuals is centered on tertiary care, reflecting a deficiency in communication between the network services, as well as the nonrecognition of the basic network as a caregiver source by its users. Despite this, more research is needed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Glypican-3 is a cell surface proteoglycan that is found in embrionary tissues, and there are no studies investigating this protein in odontogenic tumor. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate glypican-3 in a series of aggressive and non-aggressive odontogenic tumors. METHODS: Fifty-nine cases of tumors were divided into aggressive odontogenic tumors (20 solid ameloblastomas, four unicystic ameloblastoma, 28 KOTs including five associated with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome) and non-aggressive odontogenic tumors (five adenomatoid odontogenic tumors and two calcifying cystic odontogenic tumors) and analyzed for glypican-3 using immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Glypican-3 was observed in seven solid ameloblastoma and eighteen keratocystic odontogenic tumors including three of the five syndromic cases, but there was no significant difference between syndromic and sporadic cases (P > 0.05; Fisher's exact Test). All cases of unicystic ameloblastoma (n = 4), adenomatoid odontogenic tumor (n = 5), and calcifying cystic odontogenic tumor (n = 2) were negative. CONCLUSIONS: This provided insights into the presence of glypican-3 in odontogenic tumors. This protein distinguished aggressive from non-aggressive odontogenic tumors.

RESUMO

ABSTRACT: Developing research, teaching and extension in university programs is fundamental to capacitate professionals for the challenging endeavors. Considering the importance of these three university functions as relevant learning practices, the objective of this study was to analyze qualitatively the development of teaching project proposals associated with extension activities, directed to the rural environmental planning in an Agricultural Production Unit, in order to identify the issues and their degree of applicability. Twenty project proposals were developed in the "Rural Environmental Planning" course to plan an Agricultural Production Unit, which were subsequently evaluated by the farmer. This discipline is part of the Bachelor's degree course in Environmental Management and Analysis of the Universidade Federal de São Carlos. The projects followed qualitative research methods using the systemic and participatory approach. At the end of the process the farmer answered an evaluation matrix of the projects. Development of the projects was particularly important for the students and for their knowledge on the various topics covered, which also resulted in factual improvement perspectives in the Agricultural Production Unit. Construction of knowledge was participatory and integrated between the students and farmer.

Objective: to evaluate the periodontal risk in patients with mental and behavioral disorders in Teaching Core Care Dentistry and Mental Health linked to Juliano Moreira Hospital, Bahia, Brazil and its association with age, gender, race/ethnicity, education level, monthly income, visible plaque index and model psychiatric care. Material and methods: 40 patients ( >= 18 years) were classified as low, moderate and high periodontal risk, through risk polygon by Lang & Tonetti (2003), and the association between periodontal risk and age, gender, race/ethnicity, education level, monthly income, visible plaque index and psychiatric assistencial model were calculated. Results: 25% of the sample presented a low periodontal risk, 35% medium risk and 40% high risk. After the bivariate analysis the plaque index was the variable associated with high periodontal risk. Conclusion: among patients with mental and behavioral disorders, users of typical antipsychotics, the majority showed high prevalence of medium and high risk periodontal and high periodontal risk was associated with the high plaque index ( >= 40%), there was no correlation between socioeconomic variables and the psychiatric assistencial model. These results may support the implementation of actions for the promotion, restoration and maintenance of oral health of psychiatric patients, assisted in different therapeutic modalities.
