RESUMEN

Neospora caninum is an apicomplexan (family: Sarcocystidae) protozoan parasite with a global distribution. In the N. caninum life cycle, dogs and other related canids are the definitive hosts, while other animals such as water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) constitute the intermediate host for this parasite. In many countries, the water buffalo is of high economic importance, providing valuable high-quality products for human needs. Although knowledge concerning the prevalence of this parasite in intermediate animal host populations is crucial, data from water buffalo are scarce. Keeping this in mind, the aim of this study was to examine the presence and assess the prevalence rates of N. caninum infection in water buffaloes in Northern Greece, where this animal husbandry sector started to raise, as well as to determine associated risk factors, with the application of a commercially available Neospora ISCOM ELISA test kit, developed for the detection of antibodies against N. caninum in milk samples The study was conducted during January-June 2023 in a total of 172 individual raw milk samples, collected from dairy buffaloes, reared under a semi extensive system, in three different farms. Information on the status of N. caninum infection in buffaloes from Greece was so far unknown with a lack of epidemiological or risk factors associated. For the detection of N. caninum, the commercially available Neospora ISCOM ELISA test kit (SANOVIR ®, Svanova Biotech AB, Uppsala, Sweden) was utilized. Results demonstrated the presence of N. caninum in water buffaloes from Greece for the first time. All positive N. caninum animal were asymptomatic, with absence of any disease signs. The overall prevalence of infection was 22.10%, whereas the main risk factors include the presence of dogs as well as the low biosecurity measures.

Toxoplasmosis is one of the most common parasitic zoonoses and represents a significant health risk for humans, especially for immunodeficient patients. The main transmission route is by oral uptake of oocysts and consumption of undercooked meat of infected animals. Different species have been evaluated as possible reservoirs of the parasite, but few studies have been carried out to examine the role of horses in transmission of the disease. Given the proximity of these animals to humans and the widespread consumption of their meat in many countries, including the Mediterranean basin, it is important to determine the prevalence of T. gondii infection in this species. In this study, blood samples from 105 horses were collected and the presence of T. gondii was evaluated by serological and molecular methods. Antibodies against T. gondii of 12 horses (11.43%) were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), whereas 29 horses (27.62%) showed positive for PCR. Seroprevalence was related to use of the animals, being higher in horses used for dressage than in others. Purebreds had higher seroprevalence than crossbred animals. No differences between breed, sex or age were found. The results of this study confirm the presence of T. gondii infection in horses, highlighting the need to analyse the meat of this species before human consumption and to control of this infection in horses, as they could be an important reservoir of this zoonotic parasite.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne viral zoonosis caused by a Nairovirus, Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV). Despite its wide geographical distribution, the epidemiology of CCHF in northern Africa is incompletely understood and its occurrence in Algeria is virtually unknown. The present survey aimed to determine the prevalence of CCHF antibodies and to identify the potential risk factors associated with CCHFV seropositivity among the one-humped camel (Camelus dromedarius) in southern Algeria. A total of 269 camels selected randomly from slaughterhouses in three wilayas were employed in the study. Sera sampled were tested for the presence of CCHFV-specific IgG antibodies using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). CCHFV seropositivity was recorded in 255 out of 269 camels accounting for a prevalence rate of 94.8% (95%CI = 92.14-97.45). The seroprevalence by origin was determined to be 97% (193/199) in imported camels and 86% (49/57) in local ones (p > 0.25). Tick presence (OR = 12.35, 95%CI = 1.41-107.43, p < 0.05) was recorded as the only potential risk factor for contracting CCHFV. This study shows for the first time that camels are exposed to CCHFV in Algeria with a significantly high seroprevalence. It also underlines the need for further research to investigate the broader extent of circulating CCHFV in the country, whether in humans, animals, or ticks.

INTRODUCTION: Due to the cross-reactivity between SARS-CoV-2 and common human coronaviruses, previous infections with these viruses could contribute to serological or cellular cross-protection against severe COVID-19. However, protective immunity may not develop, or pre-existing immunity could increase COVID-19 severity. OBJECTIVE: To determine the seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against HCoV-NL63 and HCoV-HKU1 and correlate previous exposure with COVID-19 signs in patients from Villavicencio. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A cross-sectional retrospective study was conducted. ELISA technique was used to search for IgG antibodies against HCoV-NL3 and HCoV-HKU1 in patients with positive RT-qPCR results for SARS-CoV-2. Patients were grouped according to COVID-19 clinical characteristics in four groups: group 1: asymptomatic (n = 23); group 2: hospitalized (n = 24); group 3: intensive care units (n = 24), and group 4: dead (n = 22). RESULTS: The overall seroprevalence of IgG antibodies against HCoV was 74.2% (n = 69; 95% CI: 65.3-83.1), with 66.7% of HCoV-NL63 (n = 62; 95% CI: 57,1-76,2), and 25.8% of HCoV-HKU1 (n = 24; 95% CI: 16,9-34,7). Based on crosstab analysis, prior exposure to HCoV-NL63 was associated with protection against severe COVID-19 (p = 0.042; adjusted OR = 0.159; 95% CI: 0.027-0.938), and previous coinfection of HCoV-NL63 and HCoVHKU1 was considered a positive association to severe COVID-19 (p = 0.048; adjusted OR = 16.704; 95% CI: 1.020 - 273.670). CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study addressing seroprevalence of HCoV IgG antibodies in Colombia and Latin America. Previous exposure to HCoV-NL63 could protect against severe COVID-19, whereas patients with underlying HCoV-NL63 and HCoVHKU1 coinfection could be hospitalized with severe signs of COVID-19.


Introducción: Debido a la reactividad cruzada entre SARS-CoV-2 y los coronavirus humanos comunes, las infecciones previas con estos virus podrían contribuir a la protección cruzada serológica o celular contra la COVID-19 grave. Sin embargo, la inmunidad protectora puede no desarrollarse o la inmunidad preexistente podría generar COVID-19 grave. Objetivo: Determinar la seroprevalencia de anticuerpos IgG frente a HCoV-NL63 y HCoVHKU1, y correlacionar su previa exposición con los signos de COVID-19 en pacientes de Villavicencio. Materiales y métodos: Se realizó un estudio retrospectivo observacional analítico y transversal. Se utilizó la técnica ELISA para buscar anticuerpos IgG contra HCoV-NL3 y HCoV-HKU1 en pacientes con resultado positivo de RT-qPCR para SARS-CoV-2. Los pacientes se agruparon según los signos de COVID-19 en cuatro grupos: grupo 1: asintomáticos (n = 23); grupo 2: hospitalizados (n = 24); grupo 3: unidad de cuidados intensivos (n = 24), y grupo 4: fallecidos (n = 22). Resultados: La seroprevalencia general de IgG anti-HCoV fue de 74.2 % (n = 69; IC95%: 65,3-83,1), con 66,7 % de HCoV-NL63 (n = 62; IC95% :57,1-76,2) y 25,8 % de HCoV-HKU1 (n = 24; [IC95%:16,9-34,7). Según el análisis de las tablas de contingencia, la exposición previa a HCoV-NL63 se asoció con protección de una COVID-19 grave (p = 0,042; OR ajustado = 0,159; IC95%: 0,027-0,938) y la previa coinfección de HCoV-NL63 y HCoV-HKU1 se asoció con padecimiento de signos clínicos graves por COVID-19 (p = 0,048; OR ajustado = 16,704; IC95%: 1,020- 73,670). Conclusión: Según la literatura revisada hasta la fecha, este es el primer estudio sobre la seroprevalencia de anticuerpos IgG de HCoV en Colombia y Latinoamérica. La exposición previa a HCoV-NL63 podría proteger contra la COVID-19 grave, mientras que los pacientes con coinfección subyacente de HCoV-NL63 y HCoV-HKU1 podrían resultar hospitalizados con signos graves de COVID-19.

Seroepidemiological characteristics of human papillomavirus (HPV) in community residents reflect natural infection and can guide the reform of vaccination programs. A population-based serological survey was conducted in Guangdong Province. Serum anti-HPV IgG antibody levels were determined by an ELISA. Neutralizing antibodies against HPV6, 11, 16, and 18 were detected via a pseudovirus-based neutralization assay (PBNA). A total of 5122 serum samples were collected from community residents, including 1989 males and 3133 females, in three cities of Guangdong Province. The rate of HPV IgG antibody positivity in females was 5.39% (95% CI: 4.6-6.2), which was greater than that in males (2.36%; 95% CI: 1.7-3.1). HPV IgG antibodies were more frequently detected in females aged 51-60 years (11.30%; 95% CI: 7.6-16.0), whereas in males, the detection increased with age and reached 4.94% (95% CI: 2.8-6.9) in the group aged ≥71 years. The seropositivity of neutralizing antibodies against HPV6 and 11 was greater than that against HPV16 and 18. The serum neutralizing antibody titers in individuals who received three doses of a vaccine were 7- to 12-fold greater than those in individuals who did not receive the vaccine. The neutralizing antibody titers slightly decreased within 40 months and ranged from 0.038 to 0.057 log ED50 per month. A moderate consistency between the HPV ELISA and PBNA results was observed (Kappa score = 0.49, r = 0.249, 0.635, 0.382, and 0.466 for HPV6, 11, 16, and 18, respectively). The HPV seropositivity rate among healthy residents of Guangdong Province was found to be low among children and adolescents and to increase with age. The serum neutralizing antibody titers were significantly greater in the vaccine group than that in the control group, and this difference persisted over time, which indicated promising protection against HPV infection.

The presence of transmissible disease in livestock has a major impact on welfare and economics in animal and public health. A lack of data enables the spread of diseases due to misinformed decision-making on prevention and control. Low-resource settings face challenges in providing data, turning data availability into a development issue. For this study, a large dataset (n = 997) was collected on prevalence and seroprevalence estimates on viral (n = 224), bacterial (n = 83) and parasitic (n = 690) diseases in backyard chickens in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). These estimates originate from 306 studies identified during the screening phase of a systematic literature review. An attempt was made to classify the studies according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations'classification system for family poultry production systems. Of the studies, 98.7% (302/306) focused on a single poultry production system, while 1.3% (4/306) targeted two different production systems. Within the group of studies that covered one production system, 85.4% (258/302) were classified as â€Ëœsmall extensive scavenging or extensive scavenging,'â€Ëœsmall extensive scavenging'and/or â€Ëœextensive scavenging'. In addition, 52% (159/306) of the studies did not report information on chicken breed type. No data were found on any relevant disease for 56.9% (78/137) of LMICs, signifying a potential data gap. Of the estimates on viral and bacterial diseases, 71.0% (218/307) corresponded to diseases notifiable to the World Organisation for Animal Health, highlighting a tendency to measure disease occurrence for diseases relevant to trade. The latter might not necessarily be priority diseases for the producers, however. Furthermore, 72.3% (222/307) of the estimates originate from random samples and could be used to estimate prevalence in backyard chickens using imputation methods, thus bridging the data gap.


Les maladies transmissibles affectant les animaux d'élevage ont un impact majeur sur la santé animale et la santé publique, avec des effets sur le bien-être et sur l'économie. L'absence de données favorise la propagation des maladies puisque les mesures de prévention et de contrôle reposent sur des décisions mal informées. Les contextes faiblement dotés en ressources se heurtent à la difficulté de produire des données, ce qui fait de la disponibilité des données un enjeu de développement. Pour les besoins de la présente étude, un vaste jeu de données (n = 997) a été constitué, regroupant les taux de prévalence et de séroprévalence estimés d'un certain nombre de maladies virales (n = 224), bactériennes (n = 83) et parasitaires (n = 690) affectant les poulets de basse-cour dans les pays à revenu faible et intermédiaire. Ces estimations sont extraites des 306 études retenues lors de la phase de sélection initiale d'un examen systématique de la littérature. Une tentative de classement de ces études a été réalisée en se basant sur la classification des systèmes d'aviculture familiale élaborée par l'Organisation des Nations Unies pour l'alimentation et l'agriculture. Au total, 98,7 % (302/306) des études portaient sur un système unique de production de volailles, les 1,3 % restantes (4/306) portant sur deux systèmes de production différents. Dans le groupe des études couvrant un seul système de production, 85,4 % des élevages étudiés (258/302) relevaient des catégories " petits systèmes extensifs en liberté ou systèmes extensifs en liberté ", " petits systèmes extensifs en liberté " et/ou " systèmes extensifs en liberté ". La presencia de enfermedades transmisibles en los animales de granja tiene importantes repercusiones en el bienestar y la economía tanto en el ámbito de la sanidad animal como en el de la salud pública. La falta de datos favorece la propagación de enfermedades debido a la toma de decisiones en materia de prevención y control basada en información mal fundada. En los entornos de bajos recursos existen dificultades para el suministro de información, lo que convierte la disponibilidad de datos en un problema de desarrollo. Para este estudio, se recopiló un amplio conjunto de datos (n = 997) sobre estimaciones de prevalencia y seroprevalencia de enfermedades víricas (n = 224), bacterianas (n = 83) y parasitarias (n = 690) en pollos de traspatio en países de ingresos medios y bajos (PIMB). Estas estimaciones provienen de 306 estudios encontrados durante la fase de selección de una revisión bibliográfica sistemática. Se intentó clasificar los estudios según la clasificación de sistemas de producción avícola familiar de la Organización de las Naciones Unidas para la Alimentación y la Agricultura. El 98,7 % de los estudios (302/306) se centraron en un único sistema de producción avícola, mientras que el 1,3 % (4/306) se centraron en dos sistemas de producción diferentes. Dentro del grupo de estudios que abarcaban un solo sistema de producción, el 85,4 % (258/302) se clasificaron como sistema "extensivo de escarbado pequeño o extensivo de escarbado", "extensivo de escarbado pequeño" o "extensivo de escarbado". Además, en el 52 % (159/306) de los estudios no se proporcionó información sobre el tipo de raza de los pollos. Schistosomiasis remains a formidable challenge to global public health. This study aims to predict the spatial distribution of schistosomiasis seropositive rates in Hunan Province, pinpointing high-risk transmission areas and advocating for tailored control measures in low-endemic regions. Six machine learning models and their corresponding hybrid machine learning-Kriging models were employed to predict the seropositive rate. The optimal model was selected through internal and external validations to simulate the spatial distribution of seropositive rates. Our results showed that the hybrid machine learning-Kriging model demonstrated superior predictive performance compared to basic machine learning model and the Cubist-Kriging model emerged as the most optimal model for this study. The predictive map revealed elevated seropositive rates around Dongting Lake and its waterways with significant clustering, notably in the central and northern regions of Yiyang City and the northeastern areas of Changde City. The model identified gross domestic product, annual average wind speed and the nearest distance from the river as the top three predictors of seropositive rates, with annual average daytime surface temperature contributing the least. In conclusion, our research has revealed that integrating the Kriging method significantly enhances the predictive performance of machine learning models. We developed a Cubist-Kriging model with high predictive performance to forecast the spatial distribution of schistosomiasis seropositive rates. These findings provide valuable guidance for the precise prevention and control of schistosomiasis.

BACKGROUND: Equine herpesvirus (EHV) can cause respiratory, reproductive and neurological diseases in equine animals, including donkeys. The main pathogens responsible for these diseases are EHV type 1 (EHV-1) and EHV-4. In this study, we collected serum samples from 230 donkeys on 27 large-scale donkey farms to detect EHV-1 and EHV-4 antibodies. We analyzed the presence of EHV antibodies based on region, age and season. RESULTS: Out of the 27 farms, 62.96% (17/27) tested positive for EHV. Of the 230 donkeys tested, 2.61% (6/230) were positive only for EHV-1, 5.22% (12/230) were positive only for EHV-4, and 4.78% (11/230) were positive for both EHV-1 and EHV-4. The highest percentage of positive donkeys (21.28%) was found in Dong'e County. The seropositivity rate among donkeys aged 1-4 years was significantly higher compared to the group of donkeys aged 0-1 year (p < 0.05). Additionally, the positive rate was significantly higher in fall and winter compared to spring and summer (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Altogether, our findings indicate that large-scale donkey farms in the Liaocheng area have a high prevalence of EHV antibodies. Since Liaocheng is an important donkey trading market in Shandong Province, it is crucial to consider the risk of disease transmission based on our test results. This will help in early detection and prevention of EHV outbreaks.

Despite the high global impacts of canine vector-borne diseases (CVBD) due to their wide distribution and zoonotic potential, the current epidemiological situation of CVBD in many tropical and subtropical regions remains unknown. This study examines the seroprevalence and molecular prevalence of Ehrlichia canis and other pathogens causing CVBDs (Leishmania infantum, Dirofilaria immitis, Babesia spp., Anaplasma spp. and Hepatozoon canis) in dogs living on the island of Boa Vista (Cape Verde Republic). Blood samples and infesting ticks were taken from 150 dogs across the island (stray, shelter, and pet dogs). Serum samples were tested using a rapid immunochromatographic test (Uranotest® Quattro) that detects antibodies against E. canis, L. infantum, Anaplasma spp. and D. immitis antigen. Levels of serum antibodies against E. canis were measured using the immunofluorescence antibody test (IFAT). In addition, tick-borne pathogens in blood samples (Anaplasma spp., Babesia spp., Hepatozoon spp., and Ehrlichia canis) were detected by microscopy observation and/or PCR plus sequencing. The seroprevalence of E. canis was extremely high at 82% (123/150), as revealed by both immunochromatography and IFAT. Most dogs returning a seropositive test result (82.92%; 102/123) had antibody titres > 1:1280 but showed no clinical signs or notable laboratory abnormalities. Of the 123 animals testing seropositive for E. canis, 67 (54.47%) also presented antibodies against Anaplasma spp., and 13 (10.56%) showed the presence of Hepatozoon spp. gamonts in the blood smear. Ehrlichia canis infection was detected in 17.1% (25/146) of dogs tested by direct sequencing of polymerase chain reaction (PCR) products. Co-infections were detected in seven of these dogs: four dogs tested PCR-positive for both E. canis and A. platys, two dogs tested positive for E. canis and Hepatozoon spp., and one dog tested positive for E. canis, A. platys and Hepatozoon spp. Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato was the only tick species found infesting the canine study population. The high prevalence of tick-borne pathogens detected in dogs from Boa Vista Island highlights a need for improved control measures designed to prevent the transmission of these pathogens.

BACKGROUND: Seroprevalence studies have proven to be an important tool in tracking the progression of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. The aim of this study was to measure the seroprevalence of antibodies to severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in the general population of Kosovo by gender, age group and region and among asymptomatic people. METHOD: The Institute of Public Health of Kosovo conducted a cross-sectional population-based survey, aligned with the protocols of the WHO Unity Studies, from the beginning of May to the end of June 2021. RESULTS: The survey covered a total of 2204 people with a response rate of 91.8% (41.9% [923] males and 51.2% [1281] females). In May to June 2021, the prevalence of antibodies in the overall population (IgG antibodies ≥ 1.1) was 37.0%. Seroprevalence was 34.4% in men and 38.9% in women (p < 0.05), with the highest percentage (48.7%) found in the 60-69 years' age group. The overall prevalence of acute IgM antibodies (IgM ≥ 1.1) was 1% (95% CI: 0.7%-1.5%), with no significant difference between genders and the highest prevalence among participants of 60-69 years of age (1.6%; 95% CI: 0.7%-3.6%). CONCLUSION: A high prevalence of antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 was found in Kosovo before the start of the vaccination campaign. However, the results of the survey suggested that, by the end of June 2021, a desirable level of protection from the SARS-CoV-2 virus had not been reached.

A core component of every blood program is the supply of safe blood and blood products. The elevated risk of transmission through these products is due to parvovirus B19 (B19V) resistance to the virus inactivation procedures. Our study aimed to screen asymptomatic blood donors for B19V at a tertiary care hospital in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, between September 2020 and June 2021. Sera from 106 healthy blood donors who tested negative for Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg), Hepatitis C virus (HCV), syphilis, and malaria were tested for anti-B19V IgM and IgG using a qualitative indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). In the study population, 23.5% (n = 25) of donors tested IgM positive, 38.6% (n = 41) tested IgG positive, and 7.5% (n = 8) tested positive for both IgM and IgG. A proportion of 61.3% (n = 65) of the blood donors tested IgG negative, suggesting they had no past B19V infection. B19V DNA was not detected in any of the subjects. The high seroprevalence of IgM indicates that blood donors may have been recently exposed to B19V, potentially posing a risk to immunocompromised individuals and those with hematological stress. Further longitudinal studies with a larger sample size are recommended to better understand the risk of B19V transfusion transmission.

BACKGROUND: While hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection in children has declined dramatically in China due to the vaccination strategy for newborns, HBV infection in high-risk adults is receiving an increasing attention. The number of people who use drugs (PWUD) in China is huge, but their status of HBV infection and vaccination is less reported, especially from large samples. The related knowledge can help decision makers develop the further strategy of HBV prevention and control. METHODS: A seroepidemiological survey was conducted in all four compulsory isolated detoxification centers (CIDCs) and all eight methadone maintenance treatment (MMT) clinics located in Xi'an, China. All PWUD who were undergoing detoxification or treatment in these settings were included. A questionnaire was designed to obtain the information of HBV vaccination history of participants, and sociodemographic and behavioral data of participants were obtained from the registration records of their respective CIDCs or MMT clinics. RESULTS: A total of 4705 PWUD participated in the survey. Positive rates of HBsAg (current infection) and HBsAg or anti-HBc (current/past infection) were 5.50% and 58.02%, notably higher than those reported for the general adult population in the same province during the same period. As age increased, the anti-HBc positive rate increased with statistically significant trend. The all-negative for HBsAg, anti-HBc, and anti-HBs accounted for 28.82%. Only 18.49% were identified by the questionnaire as having received HBV vaccine. The logistic regression found that compared with identified vaccinated PWUD, those unsure if having been vaccinated and those identified non-vaccinated had a significantly higher HBV current/past infection rate, with an increasing trend. CONCLUSION: PWUD are a high-risk adult group of HBV infection in China. Of them, more than half have not received HBV vaccine, and a significant portion are susceptible to HBV. Catch-up vaccination is need for this population to prevent and control HBV transmission.

BACKGROUND: Schistosomiasis is a global public health issue. In China, while the seroprevalence of Schistosomiasis japonica has currently reduced to a relatively low level, risk of infection still exists in certain areas. However, there has been a lack of comprehensive research on the long-term trends of national seroprevalence, changes across age groups, and characteristics in spatial distribution, which is crucial for effectively targeting interventions and achieving the goal of eliminating schistosomiasis by 2030. Our study aimed to address this gap by analyzing the long-term trends of Schistosomiasis japonica seroprevalence in China from 1982 to 2020 based on the data from diverse sources spanning a period of 39 years. METHODOLOGY: Seroprevalence data were collected from literature databases and national schistosomiasis surveillance system. Meta-analysis was conducted to estimate the seroprevalence. Joinpoint model was used to identify changing trend and inflection point. Inverse distance weighted interpolation was used to determine the spatial distribution of seroprevalence. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The seroprevalence decreased from 34.8% in 1982 to 2.4% in 2020 in China. Before 2006, the seroprevalence was higher in the middle age group, and a pattern of increasing with age was observed afterwards. The areas with high seroprevalence existed in Dongting Lake, Poyang Lake, Jianghan Plain, the Anhui branch of the Yangtze River and some localized mountainous regions in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: There was a significant decline in the seroprevalence of Schistosomiasis japonica from 1982 to 2020 in China. Nevertheless, schistosomiasis has not been eradicated; thus, implementing precise and personalized monitoring measures is crucial for the elimination of schistosomiasis, especially in endemic areas and with a particular focus on the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Indian subcontinent being an important region in the fight to eliminate cholera needs better cholera surveillance. Current methods miss most infections, skewing disease burden estimates. Triangulating serosurvey data, clinical cases, and risk factors could reveal India's true cholera risk. METHODS: We synthesized data from a nationally representative serosurvey, outbreak reports and risk factors like water, sanitation and the Multidimensional Poverty Index, to create a composite vulnerability index for assessing state-wise cholera risk in India. We tested 7,882 stored sera samples collected during 2017-18 from individuals aged 9-45 years, for vibriocidal antibodies to Vibrio cholerae O1 using a cut-off titre ≥320 defining as elevated titre. We also extracted data from the 2015-19 Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme and published cholera reports. RESULTS: Overall, 11.7% (CI: 10.4-13.3%) of the sampled population had an elevated titre of cholera vibriocidal antibodies (≥320). The Southern region experienced the highest incidence (16.8%, CI: 12.1-22.8), followed by the West (13.2%, CI: 10.0-17.3) and North (10.7%, CI: 9.3-12.3). Proportion of samples with an elevated vibriocidal titre (≥320) was significantly higher among individuals aged 18-45 years (13.0% CI: 11.2-15.1) compared to children 9-17 years (8.6%, CI 7.3-10.0, p<0.05); we found no differences between sex or urbanicity. Between 2015-2019, the Integrated Disease Surveillance Program (IDSP) reported 29,400 cases of cholera across the country. Using the composite vulnerability index, we found Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, and West Bengal were the most vulnerable states in India in terms of risk of cholera. CONCLUSION: The present study showed that cholera infection is present in all five regions across India. The states with high cholera vulnerability could be prioritized for targeted prevention interventions.

BACKGROUND: HEV is endemic in several Middle Eastern countries including Saudi Arabia, which hosts the annual pilgrimage for Muslims from around the world. One of the Hajj rituals is the sacrifice of animals, including camels, cows, goats, and sheep. HEV Zoonosis is established in swine and other suspected species, including deer, rabbits, dromedary, and Bactrian camels. HEV was identified in small, domesticized animals like goats, cows, sheep, and horses. We previously investigated HEV seroprevalence in Camels. This study aimed to evaluate HEV seroprevalence in other highly consumed ruminants in Saudi Arabia, namely cows, sheep, and goats. METHODS: Sera from cows (n = 47), goats (n = 56), and sheep (n = 67) were analyzed for the presence of HEV-IgG by using in-house developed ELISA assays. RESULTS: The highest seroprevalence was found in sheep (62.7%), followed by cows (38.3%), and then goats (14.3%), with a p-value of < 0.001. No other demographic characteristics of the animals were significantly correlated with the HEV seroprevalence. CONCLUSIONS: This study provides baseline data as the first study on the seroprevalence of HEV in ruminant animals in Saudi Arabia. The high seroprevalence found in sheep and cows must be further investigated for the potential zoonotic HEV transmission to humans. Further studies are needed to investigate the active viremia in these animal species through nucleic acid detection and sequencing to provide data on the circulating HEV genotypes among the targeted animal species. The detection of HEV in different animal products, such as milk, liver, and others, also remains an important study area to consider.

Blood transfusion has a hazard of transmission of many pathogens, including Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and other venereal infections. It is crucial to conduct epidemiological surveillance to detect the prevalence of these pathogens. The study aimed to assess the seroprevalence of T. gondii and common transfusable venereal infections among healthy blood donors in Menoufia Province, Egypt, and identify associated risk factors. Four hundred twenty individuals were recruited between January and April 2023 for cross-sectional descriptive research from the blood banks of Menoufia University medical hospitals. Collected blood samples were screened for anti-T. gondii IgM and IgG, HBsAg, anti-HCV antibodies, HIV p24 antigen and anti-HIV antibodies, and anti-Treponema pallidum antibodies. 46 (11.0%) and 22 donors (5.2%) individuals tested positive for anti-T. gondii IgG with a 95% CI (8.3-14.6) and IgM with a 95% CI (3.5-8.1), respectively, while one patient (0.2%) was positive for both antibodies. Regarding venereal infections, 12 (2.9%) were positive for HBV, 6 (1.4%) were positive for HCV, 7 (1.7%) were positive for HIV, and none of the tested population showed positivity for syphilis. Female gender, consumption of raw meat, agricultural environment, poor awareness about T. gondii, and blood group type (especially AB and O groups) were identified as independent risk factors for T. gondii infection. The study highlights the importance of testing blood donors for T. gondii and common transfusable venereal illnesses. Starting health education programs and preventative measures, such as suitable meat handling and cleanliness practices, is critical for minimizing the occurrence of these illnesses. Larger-scale additional study is advised to confirm these results and provide guidance for public health initiatives.

BACKGROUND: The safety of blood donation requires screening for transfusion-transmitted infections, including human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis, hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV). This study aimed to determine the seroprevalence of HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis in blood donors of Mogadishu Tertiary Care Hospital, Somalia from 2020 to 2022. METHODS: The records of 109,385 blood donors who attended our blood center in Mogadishu-Somalia between 2020 and 2022 were examined retrospectively. Serum samples of donors; HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV and syphilisscreening tests were studied using the microparticleEnzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay (ELISA)(Vitros, Ortho-Clinical Diagnostics, U.S) method.The distribution of HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti-HIV and syphilis positivity rates of 109,385 blood donors according to years, gender and age were examined. Kolmogorov Smirnov, Skewness, Kurtosis tests and histogram were used for normality analysis. Chi-squared test (χ2) and Fisher Exact test were used to analyze categorical data. Categorical variables were expressed as frequency (percentage). Analysis of continuous data was performed with the Mann Whitney U test. P < 0.05 value was considered statistically significant. RESULTS: HBsAg positivity was found in 0.6% of the donors, anti-HCV positivity in 0.01%, anti-HIV positivity in 0.03% and syphilispositivity in 0.3%. The results showed that among the blood donors, the prevalence of syphilis, HIV, Hepatitis B, and Hepatitis Cwas notably low. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of HBV, HCV, HIV, and syphilis among blood donors in Somalia was found to be quite low. Even if our found seroprevalence rates are low, to guarantee the safety of blood for recipients, strict selection of blood donors and thorough screening of donors' blood using accepted procedures are strongly advised.

BACKGROUND: Helicobacter pylori colonizes the human stomach and may affect the inflammatory response, hormone production related to energy regulation, and gastrointestinal microbiota composition. Previous studies have explored a potential association between H. pylori infection and pediatric obesity with varying results. Considering the immunomodulatory effects of early-life infection with H. pylori that can confer beneficial effects, we hypothesized that we would find an inverse relationship between H. pylori seropositivity and obesity among Danish children and adolescents. METHODS: We assessed H. pylori seroprevalence in 713 subjects from an obesity clinic cohort and 990 subjects from a population-based cohort, aged 6 to 19 years, and examined its association with obesity and other cardiometabolic risk factors. RESULTS: No association was found between H. pylori and body mass index standard deviation score (BMI SDS). H. pylori seropositivity was, however, significantly associated with higher fasting plasma glucose levels and the prevalence of hyperglycemia. CONCLUSION: While we did not find an association between H. pylori seropositivity and BMI SDS, we observed a significant association with higher fasting plasma glucose levels and increased prevalence of hyperglycemia, suggesting that H. pylori infection may contribute to impaired glucose regulation in Danish children and adolescents.

Monitoring the seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in children and adolescents can provide valuable information for effective SARS-CoV-2 surveillance, and thus guide vaccination strategies. In this study, we quantified antibodies against the spike S1 domains of several SARS-CoV-2 variants (wild-type, Alpha, Delta, and Omicron variants) as well as endemic human coronaviruses (HCoVs) in 1,309 children and adolescents screened between December 2020 and March 2023. Their antibody binding profiles were compared with those of 22 pre-pandemic samples from children and adolescents using an in-house Luminex®-based Corona Array (CA). The primary objectives of this study were to (i) monitor SARS-CoV-2-specific antibodies in children and adolescents, (ii) evaluate whether the S1-specific antibody response can identify the infecting variant of concern (VoC), (iii) estimate the prevalence of silent infections, and (iv) test whether vaccination or infection with SARS-CoV-2 induce HCoV cross-reactive antibodies. Both SARS-CoV-2 infection and vaccination induced a robust antibody response against the S1 domain of WT and VoCs in children and adolescents. Antibodies specific for the S1 domain were able to distinguish between SARS-CoV-2 VoCs in infected children. The serologically identified VoC was typically the predominant VoC at the time of infection. Furthermore, our highly sensitive CA identified more silent SARS-CoV-2 infections than a commercial ELISA (12.1% vs. 6.3%, respectively), and provided insights into the infecting VoC. Seroconversion to endemic HCoVs occurred in early childhood, and vaccination or infection with SARS-CoV-2 did not induce HCoV S1 cross-reactive antibodies. In conclusion, the antibody response to the S1 domain of the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 is highly specific, providing information about the infecting VoC and revealing clinically silent infections.

BACKGROUND: Lyme borreliosis (LB), caused by Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato (Bbsl), is the most common tick-borne disease in Europe. Although public health surveillance for LB has been conducted in Romania since 2007, the extent of under-detection of Bbsl infections by LB surveillance has not been estimated. We therefore estimated the under-detection of symptomatic Bbsl infections by LB surveillance to better understand the LB burden in Romania. METHODS: The number of incident symptomatic Bbsl infections were estimated from a seroprevalence study conducted in six counties (population 2.3 M) and estimates of the symptomatic proportion and duration of persistence of anti-Bbsl immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibodies. The number of incident symptomatic Bbsl infections were compared with the number of surveillance-reported LB cases to derive an under-detection multiplier, and then the under-detection multiplier was applied to LB surveillance data to estimate the incidence of symptomatic Bbsl infection from 2018 to 2023. RESULTS: We estimate that there were 1968 individuals with incident symptomatic Bbsl infection in the six counties where the seroprevalence study was conducted in 2020, compared with the 187 surveillance-reported LB cases, resulting in an under-detection multiplier of 10.5 (i.e., for every surveillance-reported LB case, there were 10.5 symptomatic incident Bbsl infections). The incidence of symptomatic Bbsl infection in the six counties was 86.9/100,000 population in 2023, similar to the incidence in 2018-2020 (86.0) and higher than in 2021-2022 (40.3). CONCLUSIONS: There is a higher incidence of symptomatic Bbsl infection than is reported through public health surveillance for LB in Romania. Additional efforts are needed to strengthen disease prevention and address the important public health problem of LB.
