RESUMEN
Holtbyrnia anomala is a bathypelagic platytroctid widely distributed in the Atlantic Ocean. In this contribution, we report, for the first time, the occurrence of this species in the tropical southwest Atlantic. A single specimen was collected in 2000 on the continental slope off Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at an average depth of 1158 m. This report also represents the first record of Holtbyrnia anomala in the Brazilian Economic Exclusive Zone.

We aim to provide reference values for military aircrews participating in hypoxia awareness training (HAT). We describe several parameters with potential biomedical interest based on selected segments and slopes of the changes in oxygen saturation (SatO2) during a standard HAT. A retrospective analysis of 2298 records of the SatO2 curve was performed, including 1526 military men aged 30.48 ± 6.47 years during HAT in a hypobaric chamber. HAT consisted of pre-oxygenation at 100% and an ascent to 7620 m, followed by O2 disconnection starting the phase of descent of SatO2 until reaching the time of useful consciousness (TUC), and finally reconnection to 100% O2 in the recovery phase. Using an ad hoc computational procedure, the time taken to reach several defined critical values was computed. These key parameters were the time until desaturation of 97% and 90% (hypoxia) after oxygen mask disconnection (D97/D90) and reconnection (R97/R90) phases, the time of desaturation (TUC-D97) and hypoxia (TUC-D90) during disconnection, the total time in desaturation (L97) or hypoxia (L90), and the slopes of SatO2 drop (SDSAT97 and SDSAT90) and recovery (SRSAT97). The mean of the quartiles according to TUC were compared by ANOVA. The correlations between the different parameters were studied using Pearson's test and the effect size was estimated with ω2. Potentially useful parameters for the HAT study were those with statistical significance (p < 0.05) and a large effect size. D97, D90, R97, and R90 showed significant differences with small effect sizes, while TUC-D97, TUC-D90, L97, L90, and SDSAT97 showed significant differences and large effect sizes. SDSAT97 correlated with TUC (R = 0.79), TUC-D97 (R = 0.81), and TUC-D90 (R = 0.81). In conclusion, several parameters of the SatO2 curve are useful for the study and monitoring of HAT. The SDSAT97 measured during the test can estimate the TUC and thus contribute to taking measures to characterize and protect the aircrew members.

Study Design: This was a retrospective longitudinal observational study. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the results of cervical sagittal parameters on preoperative and postoperative lateral radiographs in anterior cervical discectomy and fusion (ACDF). ACDF is believed to change craniocervical parameters and thus cervical curvature using polyetheretherketone (PEEK) or titanium cages with or without self-locking as well as an anterior plate, the latter of which has not been shown to provide better clinical or radiological results. Overview of Literature: Cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) is a common degenerative pathology that can affect one or more levels and treatment has varied over time trying to maintain sagittal parameters within acceptable values where the ACDF is the main treatment. Materials and Methods: The study was performed in patients with CSM who underwent anterior cervical discectomy, and their pre- and postoperative radiographs were analyzed using Surgimap software a few days before and 3 months after surgery. Results: Fifteen files were included in the study. Statistically significant sagittal balance variables were observed in cervical lordosis (CL) with an increase of 4.73° (P = 0.019) and T1 slope (T1S)-CL with a decrease of -5.93° (P = 0.007). Conclusions: CL and T1S-CL showed favorably modified values when performing ACDF using stand-alone PEEK cages without the need for self-blocking or an anterior plate.

This study aimed to investigate the sustainable use of recycled plastics, specifically polypropylene (PP) and high-density polyethylene (HDPE), in the manufacture of geogrids for geotechnical and civil engineering applications. Plastics were collected from a recycling center, specifically targeting containers used for food, cleaning products, and other domestic packaging items. These plastics were sorted according to the Möbius triangle classification system, with HDPE (#2) and PP (#5) being the primary categories of interest. The research methodologically evaluates the mechanical properties of PP/HDPE (0/100, 25/75, 50/50, 75/25 and 100/0% w/w) composites through tensile and flexural tests, exploring various compositions and configurations of geogrids. The results highlight the superiority of pure recycled HDPE processed into 1.3 mm thick laminated yarns and hot air welded for 20 to 30 s, exhibiting a deformation exceeding 60% in comparison to the PP/HDPE composites. Through SolidWorks® Simulation, it was shown that the adoption of a trigonal geogrid geometry optimizes force distribution and tensile strength, significantly improving slope stabilization efficiency. Based on the results obtained, a laboratory-scale prototype geogrid was developed using an extrusion process. The results underscore the importance of careful composite design and yarn configuration selection to achieve the desired mechanical properties and performance in geogrid applications. It emphasizes the potential of recycled plastics as a viable and environmentally friendly solution for stabilizing slopes, contributing to the reduction in plastic waste and promoting sustainable construction practices.

Resumen Introducción: Las especies de las clases Crinoidea y Asteroidea se distribuyen en gran variedad de hábitats en todos los océanos desde la zona intermareal hasta grandes profundidades, existen pocos registros en aguas mexicanas, a profundidades superiores a los 200 m, los escasos registros existentes datan de documentos históricos de la literatura especializada y los ejemplares se resguardan en colecciones científicas extranjeras. Objetivo: Contribuir a la recopilación de información de los ejemplares resguardados en la Colección Nacional de Equinodermos (CNE) del Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (ICML), UNAM y proveer un inventario de las especies de crinoideos y asteroideos que habitan en zonas profundas del talud de la Península de Yucatán, México. Métodos: Del año 2005 al 2014 se recolectaron ejemplares de crinoideos y asteriodeos en cuatro cruceros en el B/O "Justo Sierra" BIOREPES 1 y 2 y COBERPES 2 y 6. Se realizaron arrastres con red camaronera en 80 estaciones de muestreo. Resultados: El listado taxonómico comprende 1146 ejemplares, de los cuales 204 son crinoideos del orden Comatulida, distribuidos en tres familias tres géneros y tres especies y 942 asteroideos distribuidos en seis órdenes, 11 familias, 21 géneros y 28 especies. Se obtuvieron los registros nuevos para la CNE: Democrinus rawsonii y Atelecrinus balanoides en crinoideos. Astropecten alligator, Hymenaster modestus, Calyptraster personatus, Pteraster militarioides militarioides, Sclerasterias contorta en asteroideos. Con esta información se incrementan los registros de crinoideos y asteroideos (de profundidad mayor a 200 m) para los estados de Yucatán (16) y Quintana Roo (16).
Abstract Introduction: The species of the Crinoidea and Asteroidea classes are distributed in a wide variety of habitats in all oceans from the intertidal zone to great depths, there are few Mexican records in depths greater than 200 m, the few existing records date from historical documents in the specialized literature and the specimens are kept in foreign scientific collections. Objective: Contribute to the collection of information on the specimens kept in the Colección Nacional de Equinodermos (CNE) of Instituto de Ciencias del Mar y Limnología (ICML), UNAM and provide an inventory of the species of crinoids and asteroids that inhabit deep areas of the slope of the Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Methods: From 2005 to 2014, specimens of crinoids and asterioids were collected through four cruises in the B/O "Justo Sierra" BIOREPES 1 and 2 and COBERPES 2 and 6, shrimp net trawls were carried out at 80 sampling stations. Results: The taxonomic list includes 1146 specimens, of which 204 crinoids are of the order Comatulida, distributed in three families, three genera and three species and 942 asteroids distributed in six orders, 11 families, 21 genera and 28 species. New records were obtained for CNE: Democrinus rawsonii and Atelecrinus balanoides in crinoids. Astropecten alligator, Hymenaster modestus, Calyptraster personatus, Pteraster militarioides militarioides, Sclerasterias contorta in asteroids. With this information, the records of crinoids and asteroids (deeper than 200 m) increase for the states of Yucatan (16) and Quintana Roo (16).

OBJECTIVES: Posterior tibial slope (PTS) is an important anatomic parameter of the knee related to anteroposterior instability. Biplanar stereoradiography allows for simultaneous low-dose acquisition of anteroposterior and lateral views with 3D capability, enabling separate lateral and medial plateau analyses. We aimed to evaluate the possibility and compare the reproducibility of measuring medial and lateral PTS on EOS® images with two different patient positionings and compare it with CT of the knees as the gold standard. METHODS: This is a retrospective study including volunteers who underwent lower limb stereoradiography and knee CT from 01/08/2016 to 07/31/2019. Sixty legs from 30 patients were studied. PTS were measured using stereoradiography and CT by two radiologists. Intraclass correlation was used to calculate intrarater and interrater reproducibilities. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to calculate the correlation between stereoradiography and CT. We also compared the reproducibility of the stereoradiography of volunteers with 2 different positionings. RESULTS: The mean stereoradiography PTS values for right and left knees were as follows: lateral, 12.2° (SD: 4.1) and 10.1° (SD: 3.5); medial,12.2° (SD: 4.4) and 11.6° (SD: 3.9). CT PTS mean values for right and left knee are as follows: lateral, 10.3° (SD:2.5) and 10.6° (SD: 2.8); medial: 8.7° (SD: 3.7) and 10.4° (SD: 3.5). Agreement between CT and EOS for angles between lateral and medial PTS was good (right, 0.874; left, 0.871). Regarding patient positioning on stereoradiography, interrater and intrarater reproducibilities were greater for patients with nonparallel feet (0.738-0.883 and 0.870-0.975). CONCLUSIONS: Stereoradiography allows for appropriate delineation of tibial plateaus, especially in patients with nonparallel feet, for the purpose of measuring PTS. The main advantage is lower radiation doses compared to radiography and CT.

Information on pollutant trophodynamics can be crucial for public health, as contaminated food consumption may lead to deleterious effects. This study was performed in Puruzinho Lake, a remote body of water in the Brazilian Amazon from which a riparian human population obtains an important part of its animal protein intake. Samples from 92 individuals, comprising 13 species and four trophic guilds (iliophagous, planktivorous, omnivorous, and piscivorous fish) were analysed for the determination of trace elements (Fe, Cr, Mn, Ni, Zn, Ca, Sr, Cd, Sn, Tl and Pb) and methylmercury concentrations. Samples from the same individuals had already been analysed for stable isotope (SI) measurements (δ13C and δ15N) in a previous investigation and the SI data have been statistically treated with those generated in this study for the evaluation of trophic dynamics of contaminants. Methylmercury was the only analyte that biomagnified, presenting TMF values of 4.65 and 4.55 for total and resident ichthyofauna, respectively. Trace elements presented either trophic dilution or independence from the trophic position, constituting a behaviour that was coherent with that found in the scientific literature. The similarity between Ni behaviour through the trophic web to that of essential elements contributes to the discussion on the essentiality of this metal to fish. Considering the Non-cancer Risk Assessment, the calculated Target Hazard Quotient (THQ) values were higher than 1.0 for all analysed individuals for methylmercury, as well as for only one individual for nickel. No other analyte rendered THQ values higher than 1.0.

A Hydroelectric Power Plant (HPP) presents erosion problems on reservoir slopes and margins. Geomats are a biotechnical composite technology increasingly used to protect soils against erosion. Survivability or durability of geomats is essential for successful application. This work analyses the degradation of geomats exposed in the field for more than six years. These geomats were used as erosion-control treatment in a slope at HPP Simplício in Brazil. The degradation of the geomats in the laboratory was also analysed through exposure in a UV ageing chamber for 500 h and 1000 h. Degradation was quantitatively evaluated by testing the tensile strength of the geomat wires and thermal tests such as thermogravimetry (TG) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The results showed that the geomat wires exposed in the field had a greater decrease in resistance compared to the samples exposed in the laboratory. In the samples collected in the field, it could be observed that the degradation of the virgin sample occurred earlier than in the exposed samples, contrary to what was observed in the TG tests carried out with the samples exposed in the laboratory. The DSC analysis showed that the samples had similar behaviours for the melting peaks. This evaluation of the wires of the geomats was presented as an alternative to analysing the tensile strengths of discontinuous geosynthetic materials such as the geomats.

The understanding of the dynamical behavior of seismic phenomena is currently an open problem, mainly because seismic series can be considered to be produced by phenomena exhibiting dynamic phase transitions; that is, with some complexity. For this purpose, the Middle America Trench in central Mexico is considered a natural laboratory for examining subduction because of its heterogenous natural structure. In this study, the Visibility Graph method was applied to study the seismic activity of three regions within the Cocos plate: the Tehuantepec Isthmus, the Flat slab and Michoacan, each one with a different level of seismicity. The method maps time series into graphs, and it is possible to connect the topological properties of the graph with the dynamical features underlying the time series. The seismicity analyzed was monitored in the three areas studied between 2010 and 2022. At the Flat Slab and Tehuantepec Isthmus, two intense earthquakes occurred on 7 and 19 September 2017, respectively, and, on 19 September 2022, another one occurred at Michoacan. The aim of this study was to determine the dynamical features and the possible differences between the three areas by applying the following method. First, the time evolution of the a- and b-values in the Gutenberg-Richter law was analyzed, followed by the relationship between the seismic properties and topological features using the VG method, the k-M slope and the characterization of the temporal correlations from the γ-exponent of the power law distribution, P(k) ⼠k-γ, and its relationship with the Hurst parameter, which allowed us to identify the correlation and persistence of each zone.

Using the visibility graph algorithm (VGA), a complex network can be associated with a time series, such that the properties of the time series can be obtained by studying those of the network. Any value of the time series becomes a node of the network, and the number of other nodes that it is connected to can be quantified. The degree of connectivity of a node is positively correlated with its magnitude. The slope of the regression line is denoted by k-M, and, in this work, this parameter was calculated for the cardiac interbeat time series of different contrasting groups, namely: young vs. elderly; healthy subjects vs. patients with congestive heart failure (CHF); young subjects and adults at rest vs. exercising young subjects and adults; and, finally, sedentary young subjects and adults vs. active young subjects and adults. In addition, other network parameters, including the average degree and the average path length, of these time series networks were also analyzed. Significant differences were observed in the k-M parameter, average degree, and average path length for all analyzed groups. This methodology based on the analysis of the three mentioned parameters of complex networks has the advantage that such parameters are very easy to calculate, and it is useful to classify heartbeat time series of subjects with CHF vs. healthy subjects, and also for young vs. elderly subjects and sedentary vs. active subjects.

Remotely Piloted Aircrafts (RPAs) are commonly used as a platform for collecting images which can be processed with Structure from Motion-Multi View Stereo (SfM-MVS) to generate 3D models. However, mobile applications for mapping planning are not designed for image acquisition of vertical surfaces, such as quarry walls or large cliffs, leaving the user to a manual flight operation, which does not ensure optimal overlap between images. Here we describe a workflow, based on the Litchi App, for automated RPA missions designed to acquire images of vertical surfaces or structures.â¢An easy-to-follow 8 steps method to survey vertical surfaces using a Remotely Piloted Aircraft.â¢It can be applied to outcrops, quarry walls, high cliffs and virtually any other type of vertical surface.â¢The workflow is flexible and can be adapted to a variety of target configurations and user-defined parameters.

En este trabajo se presenta el listado actualizado de anfibios y reptiles de Ica. Las especies son comentadas, acompañadas de mapas de distribución y claves de identificación para reptiles y anfibios. Se recopiló información de registros en colecciones científicas, artículos científicos, informes de agencias gubernamentales de vida silvestre y bases de datos taxonómicas especializadas. Adicionalmente, entre los años 2019 y 2020 se realizaron evaluaciones de campo en zonas con vacíos de información. Se encontraron un total de 22 especies (anfibios 3 y reptiles 19). Los nuevos registros de reptiles para Ica incluyen la lagartija Liolaemus evaristoi y la serpiente Incaspis tachymenoides en la provincia de Chincha a 4200 y 3200 m de altitud respectivamente, la lagartija Stenocercus ornatissimus y la serpiente ciega Epictia tesselata en la provincia de Pisco a 3500 y 2800 m respectivamente. Los nuevos registros de anfibios incluyen a Pleurodema marmoratum en la provincia de Chincha (3900 m) y Telmatobius rimac en las provincias de Chincha y Palpa a 3900 y 2350 m respectivamente. La mayor riqueza y endemismos locales se encontraron en el desierto costero, mientras que, las ampliaciones de distribución y endemismos regionales se registraron en la vertiente occidental de los Andes. También, se observa que las familias Leptotyphlopidae y Viperidae, y los géneros Dicrodon, Stenocercus y Oxyrophus terminan su distribución en la vertiente occidental y la zona costera de los departamentos de Ica y Arequipa sin representantes en el extremo sur del Perú y Chile.
This paper presents the updated list of amphibians and reptiles of Ica. Species are commented, accompanied by distribution maps and identification keys for reptiles and amphibians. Information was collected from scientific collections, scientific articles, governmental wildlife agency reports, and specialized taxonomic database. Additionally, between 2019 and 2020, field surveys were carried out in areas with information gaps. A total of 22 species were found (amphibians 3 and reptiles 19). The new records of reptiles include the Liolaemus evaristoi lizard and the Incaspis tachymenoides snake from Chincha province at 4200 and 3200 m altitude respectively, the Stenocercus ornatissimus lizard and the blind snake Epictia tesselata from Pisco province at 3500 and 2800 m respectively. New amphibian records include Pleurodema marmoratum in Chincha province (3900 m) and Telmatobius rimac in Chincha and Palpa provinces at 3900 and 2350 m respectively. The greatest richness and local endemism were found in the coastal desert, while the expansion of distribution and regional endemism were recorded on the western slope of the Andes. Also, it is observed that the families Leptotyphlopidae and Viperidae, and the genera Dicrodon, Stenocercus and Oxyrophus are finishing their distribution in the western slope and the coastal zone of the departments of Ica and Arequipa without representatives in the extreme south of Peru and Chile.

BACKGROUND: Oxygen uptake efficiency slope during submaximal tests has been proposed as a more appropriate measure of aerobic capacity after suffering a stroke, since some individuals cannot tolerate maximal exercise testing. However, it has not yet been investigated whether the oxygen uptake efficiency slope is able to differentiate between healthy individuals and those who have suffered a stroke. OBJECTIVES: To compare the oxygen uptake efficiency slope during walking and stair climbing between stroke survivors and age- and sex-matched healthy controls. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study in which 18 individuals who had suffered a stroke (stroke survivors) and 18 healthy controls matched for sex and age were included. Oxygen consumption and minute ventilation were collected breath-by-breath during walking (6-min Walk Test) and stair climbing. The oxygen uptake efficiency slope was estimated by the slope of the line obtained through linear regression. RESULTS: The stroke survivors had a lower oxygen uptake efficiency slope during the 6-min Walk Test than the healthy controls (MD 498, 95% CI 122 to 873, p = .01). The between-group difference for the Stair Test was smaller and not statistically significant (MD 349, 95%CI -73 to 772, p = .10). CONCLUSIONS: Stroke survivors had lower oxygen uptake efficiency slope during the performance of the 6-min Walk Test when compared to sex- and age-matched healthy controls. This suggests that stroke survivors have worse cardiopulmonary capacity.

Esta investigación pretende cuantificar las diferencias en la razón de mortalidad materna en las provincias de la República Dominicana, considerando las distintas condiciones sociales a la que estas mujeres están expuestas. Se utilizó la información proveniente de registro de estadísticas vitales. Se calculó la asociación entre la razón de mortalidad materna y ciertos indicadores socioeconómicos seleccionados. Se calcularon las métricas de desigualdad tomando en cuenta los indicadores socioeconómicos que se hallaron significativamente asociados con la razón de mortalidad materna, resultando esta dos veces mayor en los territorios más desfavorecidos socialmente, comparados con los territorios que se encontraron en mejores condiciones sociales.
This research aims to quantify the differences in the ma-ternal mortality rate in the provinces of the Dominican Republic, considering the different social conditions to which these women are exposed. Information from the vital statistics registry was used. The association be-tween the maternal mortality rate and certain selected socioeconomic indicators was calculated. The inequality metrics were calculated considering the socioeconomic indicators that were found to be significantly associated with the maternal mortality rate, resulting in two times higher in the most socially disadvantaged territories, compared to the territories that were found in better social conditions.

Objective: to assess inequalities in the use of health services in a municipality in Southern Brazil. Methods: This was a population-based cross-sectional study conducted with adults living in the urban area of the municipality of Criciúma, state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, between March and December 2019; the research outcomes were medical consultation, dental visit, nutritional counseling and the use of the Brazilian National Health System (Sistema Único de Saúde − SUS); the exposures were age, schooling and income; inequalities were analyzed using the Slope index of inequality and equiplots. Results: A total of 820 individuals were studied; medical consultation was higher (14.2 percentage points [p.p.]), and dental visit was lower (-29.5 p.p.), in older adults, when compared to young people; dental visit (41.1 p.p.) and nutritional counseling (18.0 p.p.) were higher in individuals with higher level of education, when compared to those with lower level of education; the use of SUS was higher in older adults (21.3 p.p.), with lower level of education (-61.2 p.p.) and lower income (-51.6 p.p.), when compared to their peers. Conclusion: in order to develop public policies, these inequalities should be taken into consideration.
Objetivo: Evaluar desigualdades en el uso de los servicios de salud en un municipio del sur de Brasil. Métodos: Estudio transversal de base poblacional con adultos residentes en área urbana de la ciudad de Criciúma, estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, entre marzo y diciembre de 2019. Variables de resultado fueron citas médicas y dentales, consejería nutricional y uso del Sistema Único de Salud (Sistema Único de Saúde − SUS). Exposiciones fueron edad, educación, ingreso. Desigualdad se presentó por Índice de desigualdad de la pendiente y gráficos equiplots. Resultados: Se estudiaron 820 individuos. Cita médica fue mayor (14.2 puntos porcentuales [p.p.]) y cita dental menor (-29,5 p.p.) en ancianos, en comparación con jóvenes. Cita dental (41,1 p.p.) y consejería nutricional (18,0 p.p.) fueron mayores en más educados en comparación con menos educados. Uso del SUS fue mayor en ancianos (21,3 p.p.), menos educados (-61,2 p.p.) y con menores ingresos (-51,6 p.p.) en comparación con sus pares. Conclusiones: Desigualdades evidenciadas demuestran que políticas públicas deben considerarlas en su desarrollo.

Métodos: estudo transversal de base populacional com adultos residentes na área urbana do município de Criciúma, no estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil, entre março e dezembro de 2019; desfechos do estudo foram consulta médica, consulta odontológica, orientação nutricional e uso do Sistema Único de Saúde (SUS); exposições foram idade, escolaridade e renda; desigualdades foram analisadas pelo índice absoluto de desigualdade e gráficos equiplots. Resultados: foram incluídos 820 indivíduos; realização de consulta médica foi maior (14,2 pontos percentuais [p.p.]), e de consulta odontológica, menor (-29,5 p.p.), em idosos, comparados a jovens; realização de consulta odontológica (41,1 p.p.) e orientação nutricional (18,0 p.p.) foi maior nos mais escolarizados, comparados aos menos escolarizados; uso do SUS foi maior em idosos (21,3 p.p.), menos escolarizados (-61,2 p.p.) e com menor renda (-51,6 p.p.), comparados a seus pares. Conclusão: para seu desenvolvimento, as políticas públicas devem considerar essas desigualdades.

INTRODUCTION: the tibial slope has been identified as one of the factors associated with graft failure after anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction; however, its relationship with functional results has been little studied. The main purpose of this study is to determine the effect of the tibial slope on functional recovery in patients undergoing reconstruction of the anterior cruciate ligament. MATERIAL AND METHODS: we included patients with a diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament injury undergoing primary reconstruction, from May 2018 to May 2019, who had a complete radiographic and clinical record; also, the scores from questionnaires of the International Knee Documentation Committee (IKDC) and Lysholm scores were collected pre surgical procedures and throughout the one-year follow-up. The measurement of the tibial slope was performed in lateral knee X-rays from the electronic clinical record. A descriptive analysis of first intention was done, and to achieve the objectives, we compared 25 patients who had normal tibial slope that were selected randomly with 25 patients who had increased tibial slope. RESULTS: a total of 98 patients were included, 73 had a normal tibial slope (equal to or less than 12 degrees) and 25 with an increased tibial slope (greater than 12 degrees), the average age in both groups was 28.43 years for the group with normal tibial slope and 28.26 for patients with increased tibial slope. Regarding the functional assessment, the IKDC and Lysholm scores at the end of the follow-up were better for patients with normal tibial slope. Graft failure was only identified in the group with increased tibial slope. On the other hand, the comparative analysis with the control group randomly selected who had normal tibial slope, showed a better functional result assessed by IKDC score at the end of the follow-up for the group with normal tibial slope. CONCLUSION: patients undergoing ACL reconstruction and increased Tibial Slope have an inferior functional result at one year of follow-up assessed by IKDC, when compared with patients with normal tibial slope.
INTRODUCCIÓN: el slope tibial (inclinación) se ha identificado como uno de los factores asociados a la falla del injerto tras una reconstrucción de ligamento cruzado anterior (LCA); sin embargo, su relación con los resultados funcionales ha sido poco estudiada. El objetivo de este estudio es determinar el efecto del slope tibial en la recuperación funcional, en pacientes sometidos a reconstrucción de LCA. MATERIAL Y MÉTODOS: se incluyeron los pacientes con lesión de LCA sometidos a reconstrucción primaria, de Mayo de 2018 a Mayo de 2019, midiendo el slope tibial y recabando los puntajes de IKDC y Lysholm. Se elaboró un análisis descriptivo de primera intención y para alcanzar los objetivos se realizó una comparativa de 25 pacientes con slope tibial normal seleccionados aleatoriamente contra 25 pacientes con slope tibial aumentado. RESULTADOS: se incluyeron 98 pacientes, 73 contaban con un slope tibial normal y 25 con un slope tibial aumentado. Los puntajes de IKDC y Lysholm al final del seguimiento fueron mejores en los pacientes con slope tibial normal. La falla del injerto sólo se identificó en el grupo con slope tibial aumentado. Por otro lado, al análisis comparativo con el grupo control demostró un mejor resultado funcional al final del seguimiento valorado por IKDC en el grupo con slope tibial normal. CONCLUSIÓN: los pacientes sometidos a reconstrucción de LCA y slope tibial aumentado tienen un resultado funcional inferior al año de seguimiento evaluado por IKDC en comparación con pacientes con slope tibial dentro de parámetros normales.

This work proposes the slope of the phase spectrum as a signal processing parameter for the ultrasonic monitoring of the water content of water-in-crude oil emulsions. Experimental measurements, with water volume fractions from 0 to 0.48 and test temperatures of 20 °C, 25 °C, and 30 °C, were carried out using ultrasonic measurement devices operating in transmission-reception and backscattering modes. The results show the phase slope depends on the water volume fraction and, to a lesser extent, on the size of the emulsion droplets, leading to a stable behavior over time. Conversely, the behavior of the phase slope as a function of the volume fraction is monotonic with low dispersion. Fitting a power function to the experimental data provides calibration curves that can be used to determine the water content with percentage relative error up to 70% for a water volume fraction of 0.06, but less than 10% for water volume fractions greater than 0.06. Furthermore, the methodology works over a wide range of volume fractions.

Monte Carlo dynamics were used to simulate the enzymatic starch digestion. Enzyme and starch molecules were distributed on a periodic grid and allowed to stochastically interact according to the kinetics scheme S + E â P + E. Digestion of gelatinized dispersions was simulated by assuming limited mobility of starch and complete mobility of enzymes and products. The results showed that the starch conversion kinetics follows the exponential model X(t) = X∞(1 - exp (-kHt)). On the other hand, the simulation of native granular starch digestion considered non-mobile aggregates of starch molecules hydrolyzed to products by mobile enzyme molecules. The results showed the presence of bi-phasic digestion patterns, which were linked to the transition from a regular to an irregular (fractal-like) granule morphology as a consequence of the erosion of the granule surface by the enzyme action. The simulation results were contrasted qualitatively with experimental results for gelatinized and granular starch digestion.

A fourth species of the genus Rhonciscus (Lutjaniformes: Haemulidae) is described from various specimens collected by small-scale fishers from the insular upper slope of western Puerto Rico. The new species was molecularly recovered as sister to the Eastern Pacific R. branickii, to which it bears many morphological similarities. It is distinguished from other Rhonciscus species by the number of scale rows between the dorsal fin and the lateral line (7), larger and thus fewer scales along the lateral line (48-50), large eyes (9.4-10.4 times in SL), longer caudal peduncle (15.2-20% of SL), larger sized penultimate (14.7-19.1% in SL) and last (7.4-9.5% in SL) dorsal fin spines which translates to a less deeply notched dorsal fin, and its opalescent silver with golden specks live coloration. This grunt, only now recognized by ichthyologists, but well known by local fishers that target snappers and groupers between 200 and 500 m in depth, occurs in far deeper waters than any western Atlantic grunt.

Soil bacteria play a fundamental role in pedogenesis. However, knowledge about both the impact of climate and slope aspects on microbial communities and the consequences of these items in pedogenesis is lacking. Therefore, soil-bacterial communities from four sites and two different aspects along the climate gradient of the Chilean Coastal Cordillera were investigated. Using a combination of microbiological and physicochemical methods, soils that developed in arid, semi-arid, mediterranean, and humid climates were analyzed. Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Chloroflexi, Verrucomicrobia, and Planctomycetes were found to increase in abundance from arid to humid climates, while Actinobacteria and Gemmatimonadetes decreased along the transect. Bacterial-community structure varied with climate and aspect and was influenced by pH, bulk density, plant-available phosphorus, clay, and total organic-matter content. Higher bacterial specialization was found in arid and humid climates and on the south-facing slope and was likely promoted by stable microclimatic conditions. The presence of specialists was associated with ecosystem-functional traits, which shifted from pioneers that accumulated organic matter in arid climates to organic decomposers in humid climates. These findings provide new perspectives on how climate and slope aspects influence the composition and functional capabilities of bacteria, with most of these capabilities being involved in pedogenetic processes.
