RESUMEN

Data on the life strategy of A. angustifoliae (population fluctuation in buds and on leaves, emergence and migration to the overwintering sites), as well as its temperature-dependent emergence from overwintering sites at constant temperatures, were determined. The eriophyid mite overwintered into buds and the density of active mites inside them from winter 2017 to spring 2018 was higher than that in winter 2018-spring 2019. In the second half of March 2018 and in winter 2018-spring 2019, the mite density inside the buds decreased gradually with a peak of emergence occurring at the beginning of plant blossoming. Population density on leaves increased in summer, reaching a higher and later peak in 2018, and gradually decreased in autumn with mites migrating to overwintering sites. A lower developmental threshold of 4.5 °C was calculated. About half of the mite population was estimated to emerge from the overwintering sites at an accumulation of degree days ranging, on average, between 85.5 (at 20 °C) and 104.4 (at 10 °C) degree days above the assessed threshold.

This study aimed to describe updated information on the basic reproductive biology of Sphoeroides annulatus females and potential use of the gonadosomatic index I G as input data to assess length at 50% maturity ( L 50 ) and identify the breeding season. From April 2014 to December 2015, 767 females were analysed along the north-west coast of the Mexican Pacific Ocean. Both immature and mature females were represented in the total length ( L T ), which ranged from 81 to 440 mm, and the smallest mature female was 92 mm (new record for the species). Gonadal maturity phases were assigned through histological analysis. A I G threshold value I cut was established using the lower whisker value for maturity phase spawning capable (2.06%). The monthly variation of I G supported the annual spawning seasonality, and the presence of reproductively active mature females I G ≥ I cut coincided with the observed periods with histological data and the peaks for both seasons 2014 and 2015. Also the presence of reproductively inactive I G < I cut mature females confirmed the nonreproductive season observed from January to April 2015. Estimates of L 50 were based on the cumulative proportion of reproductively active mature females: both datasets showed a 'bumpy trajectory'. Considering the functional form of data and models, a second objective was to verify if each dataset presented a simple or double sigmoid trajectory and select the most suitable model through the Akaike information criterion. For both datasets, the best fitted model was the double sigmoidal M DS , while the single sigmoidal M SS had low performance and did not have statistical support. The M DS provided a L 50 value ca. 254 mm L T for both data sets. A trade-off between the model's correct fit and a reliable L 50 value was found, but this fact is not always considered when calculating the maturity, resulting in biased parameters. Correct data fitting may seem trivial, but the consequences for the conservation of immature individuals could be dramatic, affecting the population recruitment. In conclusion, the histologically calibrated I cut was suitable for classifying females of S. annulatus into reproductively inactive or active types, with an agreement percentage of 99%. The I cut  = 2.06% can be useful for subsequent studies for this species.

In this study, the triacylglycerol structure of vegetable oils was removed and the effects of this removal were observed on the antioxidant efficiency of γ-oryzanol. A sigmoidal-model was used for calculating kinetic parameters relevant to the initiation and propagation phases during the peroxidation of soybean, corn, sesame, and olive oils as well as their fatty acid methyl esters. Removing the triacylglycerol structure caused an increase in the antioxidant activity of γ-oryzanol (26.49%) by affecting both inhibitory mechanisms, i.e. hydrogen-donating (7.80%) and electron-transfer (14.72%). Unexpectedly, the antioxidant performance of γ-oryzanol continued even when the induction period had ended. During the propagation phase, the highest antioxidant activity was observed in the fatty acid methyl esters of soybean oil (3.86) based on hydroperoxides decomposition. An evaluation of how the endergonic activated complexes formed could indicate that the removal of the triacylglycerol structure increased the effective collisions between the γ-oryzanol molecules and free radicals.

The present research investigates the effect of different pretreatments on glucose and fructose consumption and ethanol production by four Saccharomyces cerevisiae wine strains, three isolated and identified from different wine regions in Turkey and one reference strain. A mild stress temperature (45 °C, 1 h) and the presence of ethanol (14% v/v) were selected as pretreatments applied to cell cultures prior to the fermentation step in synthetic must. The goodness fit of the mathematical models was estimated: linear, exponential decay function and sigmoidal model were evaluated with the model parameters R2 (regression coefficient), RMSE (root mean square error), MBE (mean bias error) and χ2 (reduced Chi-square). Sigmoidal function was determined as the most suitable model with the highest R2 and lower RMSE values. Temperature pretreatment allowed for an increase in fructose consumption rate by two strains, evidenced by a t90 value 10% lower than the control. One of the indigenous strains showed particular promise for mild temperature treatment (45 °C, 1 h) prior to the fermentation step to reduce residual glucose and fructose in wine. The described procedure may be effective for indigenous yeasts in preventing undesirable sweetness in wines.

As a result of intensive anthropogenic activities, population growth and unplanned urbanization, enormous quantities of organic and inorganic pollutants are discharged into the environment every year. The primary hazardous substances of concern regarding their environmental load and health effects are heavy metals. Heavy metal pollution of aquatic ecosystems, including resources of drinking water and water intended for food processing, has been of increasing interest. Biosorption technology is a promising strategy, as it utilizes industrial or agricultural wastes to remove metals from aqueous media passively, and they represent efficient, cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternatives to traditional adsorbents such as activated carbon. In this paper, the efficiency of biosorption of copper and chromium ions was examined using different agricultural waste biomass - sugar beet shreds, poplar sawdust and wheat straw. The possibility of applying a parallel sigmoidal (PS) model to describe the biosorption process was investigated to confirm its applicability to different types of biomass and various kinds of heavy metal ions. The results showed that the biosorption of copper ions using poplar sawdust and wheat straw consist of two steps. The moiety of one step in the overall process, defined by the parameter p, was determined to be 0.85 for poplar sawdust and 0.86 for wheat straw. These values, being less than 1, clearly indicate that the process consists of two simultaneous, kinetically different steps that shift in their dominance over the process and thus could be successfully modelled by the PS model. These studies also deal with the phenomenological examination of an unusual breakthrough curve obtained for the chromium ions biosorption by sugar beet shreds, by the comparative view of the process flow and changing the pH of the effluent. The clarification of the appearance of a double curve with a negative trend in one part allows adjusting the biosorption conditions to avoid the initial blockage of chromium ion binding to the adsorbent and thus increase the adsorption process efficiency.

This study aims to study the freeze-thaw (F-T) resistance of asphalt mixture incorporating styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber by using the established complex master curves of the generalized Sigmoidal model. Asphalt mixture samples incorporating styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer and basalt fiber were manufactured following the Superpave gyratory compaction (SGC) method and coring as well as sawing. After 0-21 F-T cycles processing, a complex modulus test asphalt mixture specimen was performed to evaluate the influence of the F-T cycle. Besides, according to the time-temperature superposition principle, the master curves of a complex modulus were constructed to reflect the dynamic mechanical response in an extended range of reduced frequency at an arbitrary temperature. The results indicated that the elastic and viscous portions of asphalt mixture incorporating SBS and basalt fiber have decreased overall. It could be observed from the dynamic modulus ratio that the dynamic modulus ratios of specimens were more affected by the F-T cycle at low frequency or high temperature. Thus, in the process of asphalt pavement design and maintenance, attention should be paid to seasonal frozen asphalt pavement under low frequency and high temperature.

We used species-area relationships (SARs) to investigate the effects of habitat loss on lemur biogeography. We measured species richness via visual surveys on line transects within 42 fragments of dry deciduous forest at the Ambanjabe field site in Ankarafantsika National Park, Madagascar. We measured human disturbance and habitat characteristics within 38 of the 42 fragments. We measured the distance between each fragment and the nearest settlement, continuous forest, and nearest neighboring fragment. We fit 10 candidate SAR models to the data using nonlinear least squares regression and compared them using Akaike's Information Criterion (AIC). To determine how habitat characteristics, as well as area, influenced species richness, we ran a hierarchical partitioning procedure to select which variables to include in generalized additive models (GAMs) and compared them using AIC. Contrary to expectations, we found that lemurs form convex SARs, without a "small island effect", and with the power model being the most likely SAR model. Although we found that four variables (area, survey effort, and total human disturbance, and mean tree height) independently contributed greater than 10% of the variation in lemur species richness, only area was included in the most likely model. We suggest that the power model was the most likely SAR model and our inability to detect a "small island effect" are the result of Microcebus spp. being edge tolerant and capable of dispersing through matrix, scale issues in the study design, and low γ-diversity in the landscape. However, more study is needed to determine what role human disturbance plays in influencing species richness in lemurs.

The objective of this study was to develop sigmoidal models, including three-parameter (Quadratic, Logistic, and Gompertz) and four-parameter models (Schnute and Richards) to simulate the growth of archaeon Halobacterium halobium affected by temperature and light. The models were statistically compared by using t test and F test. In the t test, confidence bounds for parameters were used to distinguish among models. For the F test, the lack of fit of the models was compared with the prediction error. The Gompertz model was 100 % accepted by the t test and 97 % accepted by the F test when the temperature effects were considered. Results also indicated that the Gompertz model was 94 % accepted by the F test when the growth of H. halobium was studied under varying light intensities. Thus, the Gompertz model was considered the best among the models studied to describe the growth of H. halobium affected by temperature or light. In addition, the biological growth parameters, including specific growth rate, lag time, and asymptote changes under Gompertz modeling, were evaluated.

O propósito deste estudo foi analisar o comportamento da frequência cardíaca (FC) versus a carga de trabalho crescente (CTC) em teste de esteira, utilizando três modelos matemáticos (linear, linear com dois segmentos de reta e sigmóide) e verificar qual o melhor modelo que possibilita a identificação de um limiar de FC que pudesse servir de preditor para os limiares ventilatórios (LV1 e LV2). Vinte e dois homens realizaram um teste incremental (re-teste: n=12), com velocidade inicial de 5,5 km.h-1 e incrementos de 0,5 km.h-1 a cada minuto, até a exaustão. Medidas contínuas de FC e trocas gasosas foram convertidas para médias de 5 e 20 segundos. Somatória dos resíduos quadrados e quadrado médio do erro foram usados para verificar o melhor ajuste. A relação FC/CTC foi melhor representada pelo modelo Lin2 no grupo teste e re-teste (p<0,05). Foi possível identificar um ponto de deflexão de FC, utilizando o modelo Lin2 (limiar de FC) em todos os indivíduos no teste (164 ± 16,6 bpm; 83,6 por cento FC MÁX) e no re-teste (162 ± 20,0 bpm; 83,9 por cento FC MÁX). O limiar de FC (Lin2PDFC) ocorreu a 9,2 ± 1,3 km.h-1 (67,9 por cento VelMÁX) e foi menor que o LV2 (LV2= 10,6 ± 1,5 km.h-1; 77,3 por cento VelMÁX; p< 0,05), mas não diferente de LV1 (8,4 ± 1,2 km.h-1; 61,6 por cento VelMÁX; p> 0,05). Durante teste incremental em esteira, a relação FC/CTC parece ser bem descrita por uma função linear com 2 segmentos de reta, a qual permite a determinação de um limiar de FC que se aproxima do LV1.


The objective of this study was to analyze the heart rate (HR) profile plotted against incremental workloads (IWL) during a treadmill test using three mathematical models [linear, linear with 2 segments (Lin2), and sigmoidal], and to determine the best model for the identification of the HR threshold that could be used as a predictor of ventilatory thresholds (VT1 and VT2). Twenty-two men underwent a treadmill incremental test (retest group: n=12) at an initial speed of 5.5 km.h-1, with increments of 0.5 km.h-1 at 1-min intervals until exhaustion. HR and gas exchange were continuously measured and subsequently converted to 5-s and 20-s averages, respectively. The best model was chosen based on residual sum of squares and mean square error. The HR/IWL ratio was better fitted with the Lin2 model in the test and retest groups (p<0.05). The Lin2 model permitted the identification of the HR threshold (Lin2HRDP) in all subjects of the test (164 ± 16.6 bpm; 83.6 percent HR MAX) and retest groups (162 ± 20.0 bpm; 83.9 percent HR MAX). Lin2HRDP (9.2 ± 1.3 km.h-1; 67.9 percent speedMAX) was lower than VT2 (10.6 ± 1.5 km.h-1, 77.3 percent speedMAX; p<0.05), but did not differ from VT1 (8.4 ± 1.2 km.h-1, 61.6 percent speedMAX; p>0.05). During a treadmill incremental test, the HR/IWL ratio seems to be better fitted with a Lin2 model, which permits to determine the HR threshold that coincides with VT1.
