RESUMEN

The National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! (ESC!) is NASN's data initiative focusing on building data capacity for school nurses, a uniform data set with standardized definitions, and promoting data infrastructure including school nurse access to electronic documentation, interoperability of educational systems and school health records, and build partnerships to increase data collection, storage, retrievable, and utilization. Each year since 2018, states have submitted data to NASN for inclusion in the National School Health Data Set. Participation is built on a tiered programing model to include school nurses at the school, state, and national level. Every state has identified a State Data Coordinator (SDC) who serves as a liaison to NASN to support ESC! but also provides support to school nurses in their state. This article provides an overview of the ESC! data initiative for the 2023-2024 school year, which includes the data from the 2022-2023 school year.

This is the second in a series of articles looking at school health data collection from identification of data points to utilizing data to share your story and submit your data to contribute to the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! This article focuses on using data to share your story. Data storytelling versus data visualization will be discussed as well as HOW schools nurses can utilize easy access programs to support this process. Building on the first article in the series, the school nurse will not only identify the WHY and WHAT related to data collection but also HOW to link school health data to educational data to increase the audience of the story and follow data sharing regulations.

This article is part of a series of articles titled "Legal Issues 101" addressing some common questions and misconceptions around the law and school health. Nursing documentation, a recording of interactions between a nurse and a patient, is a vital part of nursing care. Timely, thorough documentation allows for patient safety, risk reduction, continuity of care, and the availability of data for work process analysis. In the school setting, nursing documentation encompasses a record of student treatment in the health office as well as communication with parents, school team members, and healthcare providers. Student health records are intersected by educational and health privacy laws, which can create confusion around record management. The purpose of this article is to clarify frequently asked questions related to health office documentation.

This is the first in a series of three articles looking at school health data collection from identification of data points to utilizing data to share your story and submitting your data to contribute to the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! Many school nurses cringe at the mention of data collection. However, everything we do as school nurses is data driven. Every documented assessment, observation, and conversation provides the school nurse with data. The barriers often noted to participating in formal data collection efforts are time, workload, access to an electronic health record, and not understanding the WHY, WHAT, and HOW. The key to data collection is identifying the data already being collected and starting where you are. Data collection is not something new that you need to find a way to fit into your already busy schedule. WHAT do you currently collect? WHY are you collecting the data you have? HOW do you collect it? WHAT do you do with the data? These are all very important questions, but let's take a closer look at the WHY, WHAT, and HOW behind data collection.

Many students enter school with a previously diagnosed chronic health condition necessitating school nurse management during the school day. Common pediatric chronic health conditions include asthma, diabetes, seizure disorder, and severe allergy to name a few. In addition, students might present with a less common health condition or an injury or short-term illness requiring school nursing services. Identification of student health conditions originate from a variety of sources, chief among them being school and sport physicals. Yet, primary healthcare provider information may not be provided for all students and, when provided, may not contain a complete health history. Thus, school nurses should establish a consistent method of collecting an initial entry-into school health history intake and periodic updates for all students, along with developing a system to distinguish between parent and healthcare provider reporting of health conditions. This is no small task. The purpose of this article is to discuss principles surrounding identifying students with health conditions, along with providing a sample intake form developed in one state that is adaptable for both paper and electronic formatting collection of data.

The National Association of School Nurses (NASN) launched the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! data initiative in 2018. The data set is comprised of four main areas and has an overarching goal of identifying best practices in school health to meet the needs of students and improve health outcomes. Management of the recent pandemic might have interfered with school nurses participating in this initiative. The goal of this article is to reenergize and familiarize school nurses with this data initiative and highlight the data points added or expanded since 2018 and why they are important to school nursing practice and addressing health equity of students. This invited testimony was given during a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and Campaign for Action meeting held in New Orleans, LA. The meeting was held in conjunction with the Future of Nursing Town Hall in Chicago that focused on social determinants of health. The focus of the meeting was school health and social determinants of health. The author, serving as Director of Research for NASN, was asked to specifically focus on NASN's efforts related to data and research, as well as social determinants of health.

RESUMEN

"People listen to stories, but they act on data." This comment from a 2008 NASN Conference attendee sums up the importance of strong messages. School nurses collect data every day on their student needs. We have countless stories of what our students need to be healthy and successful at school. Combining these with a winning strategy for communicating the message can increase the influence of school nurses in advocating for their students in their schools. This article discusses ways to build a compelling message and how to successfully broadcast the message.

There are many stakeholders for school health data. Each one has a stake in the quality and accuracy of the health data collected and reported in schools. The joint NASN and NASSNC national school nurse data set initiative, Step Up & Be Counted!, heightens the need to assure accurate and precise data. The use of a standardized terminology allows the data on school health care delivered in local schools to be aggregated for use at the local, state, and national levels. The use of uniform terminology demands that data elements be defined and that accurate and reliable data are entered into the database. Barriers to accurate data are misunderstanding of accurate data needs, student caseloads that exceed the national recommendations, lack of electronic student health records, and electronic student health records that do not collect the indicators using the standardized terminology or definitions. The quality of the data that school nurses report and share has an impact at the personal, district, state, and national levels and influences the confidence and quality of the decisions made using that data.

RESUMEN

Step Up & Be Counted! (Step Up!) is a joint project of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the National Association of State School Nurse Consultants (NASSNC). The goal of the initiative is to develop a National School Nurse Standardized Data Set that will be used by nurses across the country to uniformly collect data the same way. The data will be used to determine the health of children and youth, the care that is delivered in schools, and the impact of school nurses on academic success and well-being. This article focuses on the role of the Designated State Data Champion in the initiative.
