INTRODUCTION: The rising prevalence of obesity has become a global public health crisis. Traditional screening tools like body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) have limitations, prompting the need for simpler, more effective alternatives. Neck circumference (NC) has emerged as a promising tool due to its simplicity, affordability, and reliability. The study aimed to evaluate neck circumference as a screening tool for obesity among female adults, alongside measuring BMI, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), WC, and NC, and establishing NC cut-off values using body fat percentage as the gold standard. Additionally, it sought to compare the predictive accuracy of these measures for assessing obesity. METHODS: This cross-sectional study, conducted from March 2023 to October 2023, involved 362 female students from a health sciences university in Western Maharashtra, India. The participants provided informed consent and underwent anthropometric measurements, including height, weight, waist circumference, hip circumference, body fat percentage, and neck circumference. Body fat percentage, measured using a bioimpedance analyzer, served as the reference standard. RESULTS: The study identified a neck circumference (NC) cut-off of 31.3 cm using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis, showing robust sensitivity (71.23%) and specificity (79.02%) for detecting obesity defined by body fat percentage. Waist circumference (WC) showed the highest sensitivity (73.97%) for diagnosing obesity in females, followed by NC (71.23%). CONCLUSION: Neck circumference is a practical, cost-effective, and reliable screening tool for obesity, offering advantages over traditional methods. Its noninvasive nature and ease of measurement make it suitable for large-scale screening, contributing to the early detection and management of obesity-related health risks. This study supports the inclusion of NC in routine clinical assessments and public health initiatives.

Objectives: Studies have shown that there are differences in clinical evaluation parameters and difficult intubation rates among different ethnic populations. In our study, we aimed to evaluate the efficacy of upper airway clinical and ultrasonographic measurement methods in Turkish population. Methods: Our study is a single-center, prospective, observational study conducted with 402 patients. All patients underwent clinical airway measurements which are routinely used in pre-anesthetic evaluation. In addition, ultrasonographic anterior neck soft tissue thickness measurements of each patient were made and recorded. Results: Among the clinical measurements, we found the neck circumference/thyromental distance (TMD) ratio to be significant with a cut-off value of 5.5 and a sensitivity of 92.9% and a specificity of 88.3%, while among the ultrasonographic anterior neck measurements, we found the skin-epiglottic distance to be the most sensitive measurement. We found that there was a positive relationship between the neck circumference/TMD ratio and skin-epiglottis. Conclusions: In our study, we found that routine measurement methods used in airway examination alone are not sufficient, and measurements that take into account the body proportions of the patients, such as the neck circumference/TMD ratio and the ultrasonographic evaluations are more useful in predicting difficult intubation.

Background: Neck circumference (NC) measurement has been recently developed as a simple and time-saving anthropometric method for predicting cardiovascular risk. Asymptomatic hyperuricemia is known as one of the cardiovascular risk factors. This study investigated the association between NC and asymptomatic hyperuricemia among the general population of Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional study examined data from 7,629 participants in the 2019-2020 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was used to identify the factors associated with hyperuricemia. Results: Approximately 10% of participants corresponded to hyperuricemia group who were likely to be male, have more comorbidities, poorer habits, and larger NC. Multivariable regression analysis revealed that NC was significantly associated with hyperuricemia in women (OR 1.17; 95% CI 1.06-1.30), but not in men (OR 1.04; 95% CI 0.96-1.12). Conclusion: A large NC is independently correlated with hyperuricemia among Korean women.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Neck circumference (NC) has been proposed as a simple measurement to identify patients with overweight and obesity. It has been found that adipose tissue at the cervical level is associated with the presence of metabolic alterations. The aim of this study was to estimate the association between NC and indicators of Metabolic Syndrome (MS) to subsequently estimate its capacity to identify the risk of MS compared to waist circumference (WC) and Body Mass Index (BMI). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out with a sample of 286 children 6-9 years old who attended six public primary schools in Jalisco, Mexico. Pearson's correlation coefficients along with sensitivity and specificity tests were performed to analyze the relationship between NC and MS indicators. Odds ratio (OR) and concordance analyses were performed considering the Kappa index. RESULTS: NC showed statistically significant correlations with all MS indicators except for LDL cholesterol and total cholesterol. The cut-off points of NC to identify MS according to sex was >27.4 cm for girls and >29.8 cm for boys. The association of NC with values above the cutoff point and the presence of MS was OR: 21.6 (CI: 7.11-65.74). CONCLUSIONS: NC represents a simple and cost-effective alternative to identify children at risk of MS when compared to BMI and WC.

BACKGROUND: The leading cause of death in older people is cardiovascular diseases. Several studies have found that neck circumference (NC) is a simple anthropometric marker associated with adiposity. The aim of this study is to estimate and validate NC cut-off points as adiposity markers and analyze their association with cardiovascular and chronic metabolic diseases in older people. METHODS: A cross-sectional study in 358 non-disabled, community-dwelling older people (71.7 ± 3.9 years) living in Santiago de Chile and participating in the HTSMayor study was conducted. Measurements of body composition and cardiovascular risks were evaluated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association of NC with cardiovascular and chronic metabolic diseases. NC cut-off points were obtained to predict obesity, abdominal obesity, and adiposity. RESULTS: The best performance values of neck circumference relative to obesity and adiposity were obtained with respect to abdominal obesity (40.6 cm in men and 34.2 cm in women). Higher NC values were associated with a higher area under the curve (AUC) for men and women (men: AUC = 0.84; women: AUC = 0.86). NC was significantly associated with a higher risk for diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.95), hypertension (OR = 2.42), acute myocardial infarction (OR = 4.36), and comorbidities (OR = 2.01), and a lower risk for sarcopenia (OR = 0.35). CONCLUSIONS: This study shows that NC is a useful tool for detecting abdominal obesity, obesity, and adiposity in older people and that a higher NC increases the risk of chronic diseases.

BACKGROUND: Neck circumference (NC) has been proposed as an indicator of upper trunk adiposity and a potential indicator of metabolic risk. The objective was to evaluate NC and its correlation with body fat percentage (BF%) and other indicators of adiposity in children with normal weight, overweight, and obesity. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 112 children 5 to 10 years of age were included in the outpatient clinic from a public hospital. Measures of weight and height to calculate BMI (kg/m2), NC, mid-upper arm circumference, waist circumference, and tricipital skinfold thickness. Body composition measurements were performed using an electrical bioimpedance device (BIA). The relationship between anthropometric variables and BF% obtained by BIA was determined using Spearman correlation tests. Multivariate models were constructed with BF% as the dependent variable and anthropometric parameters as independent. RESULTS: In the entire group, there was a direct correlation between NC and BF% (r = 0.50, p < 0.001), but lost statistical significance in the case of normal weight. The relationship maintained its significance in subjects from the overweight and obesity groups. In multivariate models, BMI exhibited the highest correlation with BF%, followed by waist circumference and mid-upper arm circumference; for NC, the R2 value was 0.30 (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: Neck circumference is useful in the screening of population groups with the advantage of not requiring any specialized instruments for its measurement other than a tape measure. BMI and waist circumference were the best indicators of general and central adiposity, respectively.

Background: Early identification and treatment of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) could reduce overall mortality. Anthropometric measurements offer a simple and cost-effective method to potentially improve early detection of NAFLD and prevent its complications. This study aims to estimate the prevalence of NAFLD using the fatty liver index (FLI) and evaluate the effectiveness of certain anthropometric measurements in predicting NAFLD as diagnosed by FLI. Method: A cross-sectional analytical study was conducted with 1264 Saudi population without Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) non-alcoholic individuals at primary health care centers (PHCCs) in Jeddah city. Measurements included triglycerides, gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), and fasting plasma glucose (FPG). Measurements for neck circumference (NC), and calculations for weight-to-height ratio (WHtR) and weight-to-hip ratio (WHpR), along with FLI, were performed. NAFLD was identified in individuals with an FLI ⩾60. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was utilized to assess the accuracy of WHtR, WHpR, and NC in detecting NAFLD, with Youden's index determining the optimal cutoff points for these 3 indices. Result: The prevalence of NAFLD was found to be 30.9%. Among the markers, WHtR emerged as the most significant in indicating NAFLD, achieving an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.916; whereas NC and WHpR exhibited identical AUC values of 0.783. WHtR demonstrated superior diagnostic efficacy for identifying elevated FLI, with gender-specific cutoff values established at >0.57 for females and >0.61 for males. In all 3 markers, females exhibited higher sensitivity, specificity, and negative predictive value (NPV) compared to males. Conclusion: WHtR could serve as a useful tool in the initial clinical screening for NAFLD among Saudi population without T2DM to identify those who may benefit from more comprehensive testing. Further local studies are warranted to confirm the levels of accuracy and the calculated cutoffs.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Hypoglossal nerve stimulation (HGNS) therapy has historically had strict eligibility requirements including a body mass index (BMI) < 32 kg/m2. However, recent Food and Drug Administration approval expanded indications to a BMI < 40 kg/m2. There is a wide variability in body fat distribution. This study sought to determine if neck circumference is a better surrogate predictive variable for HGNS outcomes than BMI. METHODS: A retrospective chart review was conducted at a tertiary care center on adults who underwent HGNS implantation by a single surgeon from March 2017 to October 2021. Baseline demographic data including neck circumference, diagnostic sleep studies and post-implantation HGNS titration studies were collected. Linear regression and Spearman's Correlation Coefficient (SCC) analysis were utilized to compare neck circumference (NC), percentage of predicted neck circumference (PPNC) and BMI with the apnea-hypopnea index at effective voltage (AHI-v). RESULTS: This study included 43 patients who were middle aged (61.1 years), predominantly male (76.7%), with severe obstructive sleep apnea (median AHI 35) and mean neck circumference of 15.3 inches. Utilizing the NC and PPNC, positive correlations with AHI-v were observed (p = 0.0033, SCC = .438, and p = 0.0029, SCC = .444). While controlling for BMI, a 1-inch increase in neck circumference was associated with a 35% increase in AHI-v (p = 0.0411). CONCLUSIONS: A larger neck circumference was independently associated with worse HGNS outcomes. Further research is needed to support and confirm these findings, particularly across sexes.

Background: There were contradictory reports about the relationship between neck circumference (NC) and thyroid status. This study aimed to compare the NCs of Korean adults with or without thyroid disease. Methods: The data of 8,198 subjects (aged 40-80 yr) that participated in the 2019-2020 Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were subjected to analysis. NCs were measured by trained staff to an accuracy of ±0.1 cm with a tape measure. Multiple logistic models were used to assess the prevalence of thyroid disease by NC level among men and pre- and postmenopausal women. Results: Approximately 5% of subjects had a history of thyroid disease. In contrast to men and postmenopausal women, premenopausal women with a larger NC had a significantly higher prevalence of thyroid disease (P-value=0.025). Conclusion: A large NC is significantly associated with thyroid disease among premenopausal Korean women.

BACKGROUND: The associations of fat distribution with bone health are debatable. We aimed to investigate the associations between neck circumference (NC) and bone mineral loss among the adult Chinese population in Sichuan province. METHODS: We examined overall NC size and NC stratums (≤35 cm, 3538 cm) with bone mineral density (BMD) at the femoral neck, lumbar spine, total hip skeletal sites in 135 men and 479 women respectively, and assessed whether adiposity, lipids, and calcium and phosphorus levels, might have a biased role in the relationship of NC and bone mineral loss with linear regression, logistic regression, and restricted cubic spline models. RESULTS: The overall NC size is not independently associated with BMD at all sites. However, stratification for NC revealed that the positive correlation between NC and BMD at all sites were significant in the NC stratum 1 (≤35 cm) in women (all p<0.05) and NC stratum 2 (3538 cm) compared with NC stratum 1 using logistic regression. However, in women, no statistically significant association was observed between NC stratum 1 and BMD values after adjustment for the same confounders. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest a NC stratum-specific association between NC size and bone mineral loss in men in Sichuan province in China, but not in women.

Background: Sleep apnea, a prevalent global health issue, is characterized by repeated interruptions in breathing during sleep. This systematic review aggregates global data to outline a comprehensive analysis of its associated risk factors. Purpose: The systematic review underscores the global prevalence of sleep apnea and the universal importance of its early detection and management by delineating key risk factors contributing to its development. Material and Methods: We conducted a thorough systematic review of international medical databases up to July 31, 2023, including PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane Library, to ensure a wide-ranging collection of data reflective of various populations. Results: The systematic review identifies several risk factors such as obesity, age, gender, neck circumference, family history, smoking, alcohol use, underlying medical conditions, and nasal congestion, highlighting their prevalence across diverse demographics globally. Conclusion: Emphasizing lifestyle modifications and proactive interventions, our findings advocate for global health strategies to mitigate the risk of sleep apnea and enhance sleep health worldwide.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative airway obstruction after anterior cervical spine surgery (ACSS) can be a fatal complication. Occasionally, it rapidly progresses to complete obstruction. There are no established standardized protocols on how medical staff should assess for signs and symptoms, seek help, or facilitate airway management after ACSS to prevent unfavorable events. This study aimed to primarily describe a systematic approach by assessing the signs and treatment outcomes of airway compromise in patients who underwent ACSS. Further, it recommended an action protocol after extubation for medical staff according to patients' symptoms to prevent unfavorable outcomes. METHODS: An extensive literature search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library to identify case reports, case series, and cohort studies restricted to English and published between January 1990 and March 2023. We included cases that described the signs, symptoms, and treatment of airway obstruction after ACSS. Meanwhile, cases involving complications of other known causes, cases of trauma or occipital-cervical fixation, or those using bone morphogenetic protein were excluded. RESULTS: Twenty cases from 17 studies were obtained, and their study quality was acceptable. Four patients died, and two presented with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy. Further, five of six patients had fatal complications that initially developed within 7 h after surgery. Then, 9 (69%) of 13 patients with evidence of hematoma (69%) showed initial symptoms within 12 h after surgery. Finally, 9 of 11 patients with early-stage symptoms had favorable outcomes, and patients who developed late-stage symptoms commonly had unfavorable outcomes. CONCLUSION: The early identification of signs and symptoms and immediate treatment are important, particularly within 12 h postoperatively. We suggest a novel action protocol for medical staff according to symptom urgency, which includes the measurement of neck circumference using a string for evaluating neck swelling.

Obesity is the primary risk factor for the development of obstructive sleep apnea, and physical inactivity plays an important role. However, most studies have either only evaluated physical activity subjectively or objectively in obstructive sleep apnea. The objectives of this study were: (i) to assess the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea severity (both apnea-hypopnea index and desaturation parameters) and both objectively and subjectively measured physical activity after adjustment for anthropometry and body composition parameters; and (ii) to assess the relationship between objective and subjective physical activity parameters and whether obstructive sleep apnea severity has a modulatory effect on this relationship. Fifty-four subjects (age 47.7 ± 15.0 years, 46% males) were categorized into groups according to obstructive sleep apnea severity: no obstructive sleep apnea; mild obstructive sleep apnea; and moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea. All subjects were evaluated with subjective and objective physical activity, anthropometric and body composition measurements, and 3-night self-applied polysomnography. A one-way ANOVA was used to evaluate the differences between the three obstructive sleep apnea severity groups and multiple linear regression to predict obstructive sleep apnea severity. Differences in subjectively reported sitting time (p ≤ 0.004) were found between participants with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea, and those with either mild or no obstructive sleep apnea (p = 0.004). Age, body mass index and neck circumference explained 63.3% of the variance in the apnea-hypopnea index, and age, body mass index and visceral adiposity explained 67.8% of the variance in desaturation parameters. The results showed that the person's physical activity does not affect obstructive sleep apnea severity. A weak correlation was found between objective and subjective physical activity measures, which could be relevant for healthcare staff encouraging patients with obstructive sleep apnea to increase their physical activity.

INTRODUCTION: Our aim was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis for the association of neck circumference (NC) in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) patients as compared to non-PCOS controls. METHODS: Primarily the PubMed/MEDLINE database and others such as SCOPUS, Google Scholar, Cochrane Library, were searched up to November 15, 2023 for observational studies comparing NC in PCOS versus non-PCOS women. The mean and SD values of NC and other covariates in PCOS and control groups were extracted by two independent reviewers, and the quality and risk of bias assessment was done using Newcastle-Ottawa Scale. The meta-analysis employed combined standardized mean differences (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) to compare NC between PCOS patients and controls. The heterogeneity and validity were addressed by subgroup, meta-regression, and sensitivity analyses. We conducted a Bootstrapped meta-analysis using 1,000 and 10,000 simulations to test the accuracy of the obtained results. The certainty of evidence was assessed by the GRADE approach. RESULTS: Our meta-analysis included 9 observational studies. The PCOS patients showed significantly higher NC values than the non-PCOS controls (SMD: 0.66, 95% CI: 0.41-0.91, p < 0.0001). In the bootstrap meta-analysis, the accuracy of the observed findings was proved (SMD = 0.66, 95% CI = 0.42-0.91) for the NC outcome. No publication bias was detected in the funnel plot analysis using Begg's and Egger's tests. The 95% prediction interval of 0.036-1.28 suggests that the true outcomes of the studies are generally in the same direction as the estimated average outcome. The sensitivity analysis provided the robustness of the outcome, and no single study was overly influential on the pooled estimate. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis provides accurate evidence for significantly higher NC values in PCOS as compared to non-PCOS controls. There is no sufficient evidence on the diagnostic accuracy measures for NC in PCOS. Hence, further research on its diagnostic utility in PCOS is needed.

(1) Background: High blood pressure (HBP) and obesity are significant and growing public health issues worldwide. Our study aimed to evaluate the associations of neck circumference (NC), mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC), and wrist circumference (WrC) with HBP among Lithuanian children and adolescents aged 7-17 years. (2) Methods: In this cross-sectional study, data on BP and anthropometric measurements were analysed in 3688 children and adolescents aged 7-17 years. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations between anthropometric indices and HBP. (3) Results: Overall, the prevalence rates of elevated BP and hypertension were 13.7% and 12.9%, respectively. After adjustment for age, BMI, and WC, statistically significant elevated aORs were observed for associations between greater NC, MUAC, WrC, and HBP in boys (aORs: 2.13, 2.46, and 2.48, respectively) and in girls (aORs: 2.01, 2.36, and 2.09, respectively). Moreover, per-unit increase in NC, MUAC, and WrC was also associated with greater odds of HBP in boys (aORs: 1.20, 1.21, and 1.37, respectively) and in girls (aORs: 1.10, 1.10, and 1.21, respectively). The analysed anthropometric indices presented higher area under the curve values for predicting HBP in boys than in girls. (4) Conclusions: This study suggests that higher NC, MUAC, and WrC are associated with increased odds of HBP in Lithuanian children and adolescents.

The reliability of neck circumference measurement as an assessment tool for older adults requiring long-term care remains unknown. This study aimed to evaluate the reliability of neck circumference measurement in older adults requiring long-term care, and the effect of edema on measurement error. Two physical therapists measured the neck circumference. Intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and Bland-Altman analyses were performed to examine the reliability of neck circumference measurement. Correlation analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between edema values (extracellular water/total body water) and neck circumference measurement difference. For inter-rater reliability of neck circumference measurement, the overall ICC (2,1) was 0.98. The upper and lower limits of the difference between examiners ranged from -0.9 to 1.2 cm. There was no association between edema values and neck circumference measurement error. Thus, measurement of the neck circumference in older adults requiring long-term care is a reliable assessment tool, with a low error rate, even in older adults with edema.

Neck circumference is an attractive method for determining metabolic profiles and has many advantages over waist circumference. However, the correlation between neck circumference and hepatic fibrosis has not been evaluated. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between neck circumference and hepatic fibrosis and define the optimal cut-off point for neck circumference to determine hepatic fibrosis. A cross-sectional study (n = 333) was conducted among Thai healthcare workers at Phramongkutklao Hospital who received an annual health maintenance program. Neck circumference was measured at the lower margin of the laryngeal prominence. Fibroscan® with a controlled attenuation parameter was used to measure the degree of hepatic fibrosis and steatosis by an experienced, well-trained operator. In the cross-sectional analysis, it was found that the large circumference of the neck was associated with hepatic fibrosis (r = 0.19, p = .001) and hepatic steatosis (r = 0.58, p < .001). Hepatic fibrosis (r = 0.15, p = .004) and steatosis (r = 0.53, p < .001) were also associated with waist circumference. The neck circumferences of 40 and 34 cm were the best cut-offs for male and female participants, respectively.Neck circumference is closely related to hepatic fibrosis and steatosis, which should be promoted and has a better advantage than waist circumference in the screening of hepatic steatosis.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: This study aimed to assess the potential of neck circumference (NC) and neck-to-height ratio (NHR) as predictors of future cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality in a general population from Northeastern China. METHODS: A multi-center prospective study was conducted in Northeastern China, involving 18, 796 participants. The associations between NC or NHR and the incidence of overall CVD mortality, stroke mortality, and coronary heart disease (CHD) mortality were examined using multivariate Cox regression models. Hazard ratios (HRs) and the corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated. Reclassification analyses were conducted to determine the incremental predictive value of NC or NHR. RESULTS: NC was significantly associated with the risk of CVD mortality, independent of other anthropometric measurements for obesity. Individuals in the highest quartile of NC had a 1.83-fold (95% CI 1.29 to 2.61) and a 2.40-fold (95% CI 1.45 to 4.00) higher risk of overall CVD mortality and CHD mortality, respectively. Larger NC was significantly related to a heightened risk of ischemic stroke mortality, although no such association was observed with hemorrhagic stroke mortality. Furthermore, the risk of overall CVD mortality, stroke mortality, and CHD mortality increased by approximately 1.21 to 1.25 times per 1-SD change in NC. Similar findings were observed for NHR. The percentages of correct classification of overall CVD mortality improved by 12.1% and 16.3% after the addition of NC or NHR into established models, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: NC and NHR might be promising predictors of CVD mortality, with higher values indicating greater risk.

BACKGROUND: Neck circumference (NC) has been associated with mortality secondary to cardiovascular diseases and other conditions. However, information on this association in the population at large is limited. We aimed to assess this association in community dwellers living in rural Ecuador. METHODS: Individuals aged ≥40 y who were enrolled in the population-based Three Villages Study cohort were prospectively followed to estimate mortality risk according to baseline measurements of NC, after adjusting for relevant confounders. RESULTS: Analysis included 1521 individuals followed for a mean of 6.4±3.4 y. Mean NC was 36.2±3.7 cm, with 509 (33%) individuals allocated to the first (25-34 cm), 319 (21%) to the second (36-37 cm), 417 (27%) to the third (37-39 cm) and 276 (18%) to the fourth (40-50 cm) quartile. A total of 211 (14%) individuals died during the follow-up. Overall, the crude mortality rate was 2.3 per 100 person-years, which increased to 5.63 for those in the fourth NC quartile. An adjusted Cox-proportional hazards model showed that individuals in the fourth quartile of NC had higher mortality risk compared with the first quartile (HR: 2.98; 95% CI 1.77 to 5.02). CONCLUSION: Larger NC increases mortality risk in middle-aged and older adults of indigenous ancestry living in rural Ecuador.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: ESPEN/EASO advocates screening for sarcopenic obesity based on the concomitant presence of an elevated body mass index (BMI) or waist circumference. Neck circumference (NC) is another simple and reliable anthropometric measurement for estimating obesity; however, its ability to detect sarcopenic obesity has not yet been established. The aim of the present study was to explore the association between NC and sarcopenic obesity in a Shanghai community population. METHODS: The study included 1542 participants (622 men and 920 women) with a mean age of 58 years who underwent an examination for the detection of obesity at baseline in 2013-2014 and received a re-examination in 2015-2016. An automatic bioelectric impedance analyzer was used to estimate body composition, and magnetic resonance imaging was used to measure abdominal fat distribution. The definition of pre-sarcopenic obesity combined low skeletal muscle mass adjusted by weight (SMM/W) with obesity which defined according to overall adiposity or fat distribution as BMI ≥25 kg/m2, fat percentage (fat%) ≥ 25% in men and 30% in women, or visceral fat area (VFA) ≥ 80 cm2, respectively. RESULTS: In both men and women, subjects with low SMM/W had a higher level of NC than those without (both P < 0.01). In turn, participants with elevated NC had a higher proportion of pre-sarcopenic obesity in both men and women, regardless of adiposity status assessed by BMI, fat%, or VFA (all P < 0.01). During an average follow up of 2.1 years, for each 1 cm increase in NC, multivariable-adjusted hazard ratios of pre-sarcopenic obesity in which adiposity status assessed by high BMI were 1.40 (1.11-1.76) in men and 1.32 (1.13-1.56) in women; in addition, such association remained between NC and pre-sarcopenic obesity assessed by high fat% or high VFA. CONCLUSION: NC is closely associated with the incidence of sarcopenic obesity, suggesting that it could be helpful for screening sarcopenic obesity in a community-based population.
