RESUMEN

Purpose: Sintering procedures influence the properties of zirconia. This study evaluated the effect of varying sintering rates on flexural strength (σ) of 3, 4, and 5 mol% yttria (Y) containing monochrome (Mo) and multilayer (Mu) zirconia. Materials and Methods: 270 specimens (width×length×thickness = 11.2×20×1.5 mm) were prepared from Mo and Mu of 3Y, 4Y, and 5Y zirconia and randomly sintered at regular (RS: 10 °C/min), fast (FS: 35 °C/min), and speed (SS: 70 °C/min) sintering (n = 15/group). Three-point bending test was determined for σ. ANOVA and Bonferroni test were analyzed for significant differences of σ (a=0.05). The microstructure and crystalline [monoclinic (m), tetragonal (t), and cubic (c)] phases were evaluated by SEM and XRD.Results: σ of zirconia was affected by zirconia type, shade pattern, and sintering rate. Significant higher σ for 3Y>4Y>5Y (p<0.05). Significant greater σ for Mu>Mo (p<0.05). Significant reduction of σ upon SS than RS and FS (p<0.05). However, no significant effect on σ upon varying sintering rates within each type of zirconia (p>0.05). SEM indicated greater grain size in 5Y than in 4Y and 3Y. XRD indicated higher t phase in 3Y, whereas higher c phase in 5Y. Mo indicated a higher c phase than Mu.Conclusions: σ was influenced by Y content (3Y>4Y>5Y), shade pattern (Mu>Mo), and sintering rate (RS@FS>SS). Nonetheless, no influence of varying sintering rates on σ for each type of zirconia, suggesting sintering zirconia with RS and FS for expecting higher σ and at SS for acceptable σ for chair-side cost-effective restoration.

RESUMEN

Chinese porcelain with an optically clear colored glaze, imported to Europe from the Kangxi period (1662-1722, Qing Dynasty) onwards was highly collected by the French Elite of the 18th century. The bright colors with a clear, shiny glaze were unlike anything produced in Europe at that time. The colors of enamelled artifacts (on biscuits or already glazed porcelain) can be fully monochrome or consist of associations of large monochromatic areas with or without application of gilding. Non-invasive portable XRF and mobile Raman analyses have previously shown their effectiveness in the characterization of (colored) glassy silicates. In this study, we compare the Raman signatures of twenty-one Chinese artifacts fully-or with major monochrome area (sancai)-decorated with blue, turquoise (or celectian blue), honey-yellow, green, eggplant, and red color. Different types of glazes are identified and confirmed by pXRF: lead-rich, lead-poor-alkali, lead-doped alkali, and alkali-based compositions. However, an unexpected low level of lead is observed in the turquoise glazes, likely to optimize the gloss. Raman spectroscopy appears more reliable to compare the Pb content than pXRF. This work presents Raman spectral signatures of glazes that can potentially be used for non-invasive object classification and counterfeit detection.

RESUMEN

Animal growth is closely related to glycolipid metabolism, and the liver is the main organ for glycogen storage and fat synthesis in birds, but whether monochromatic light affects glycogen and lipid synthesis in the liver is unclear. Therefore, in this study, a total of 96 Arbor Acre (AA) broilers at posthatching d 0 (P0) were raised under 4 kinds of light-emitting diode (LED) lights, white light (WL), red light (RL), green light (GL), and blue light (BL), to posthatching d 21 (P21) and 35 (P35). The results showed that the liver, abdominal fat, and abdominal fat indices gradually increased with increasing age under monochromatic light treatments. The liver glycogen and triglyceride (TG) contents also showed an increasing trend. Furthermore, compared with those at P21, the mRNA levels of glycogen synthase (GS), glycogen synthase kinase-3ß (GSK-3ß), and protein kinase B (AKT1) in the liver were increased in the WL and RL groups at P35, and the mRNA levels of acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) and apolipoprotein B (APOB) increased in all groups at P35. At the same time, the total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and liver superoxide dismutase (SOD) contents increased in all groups at P35 compared with those at P21. In addition, at P21, compared with WL, GL and BL promoted the serum glucose (GLU) and TG contents by increasing the mRNA levels of GS, GSK-3ß, glucose-6-phosphatase (G6PC), ACC, and fatty acid synthase (FAS), but no effect on the proliferative ability and damage of hepatocytes. At P35, RL promoted the hepatic glycogen and TG contents by increasing GSK-3ß, AKT1, ACC, and APOB mRNA levels, and the serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST) levels were increased than in the WL group. These results suggest that the effects of light color on liver glycogen and lipid synthesis in broilers changed with age, and also provide a theoretical guidance for scientific use of color of light information to improve productive performance in broilers.

RESUMEN

Aim: Our aim was to gain an idea about testicular injury by comparing the reduced volume, which is one of the indirect indicators of testicular damage in undescended testes, and by evaluating the reduced microvascular blood flow by superb microvascular imaging, and also to determine whether superb microvascular imaging modes could detect microvascular blood flow in more detail in the decreased volume of undescended testes. Material and methods: We compared testicular blood flow in undescended testes via conventional Doppler imaging, color superb microvascular imaging, and monochrome superb microvascular imaging techniques with contralateral normally located testis and normal control group. Each sample of testicular tissue was evaluated using a qualitative method. Spot color encoding and linear flow color encoding counts determined in testicular parenchyma were counted separately and expressed as numerical data. The localization of the examined testes in the grayscale was noted (proximal inguinal canal, medial inguinal canal, distal inguinal canal, and scrotal). The volume of undescended testes was calculated automatically via a formula for volume. Results: Monochrome superb microvascular imaging is significantly superior in visualizing the vascularity of undescended testes compared with color Doppler, power Doppler and color superb microvascular imaging (p = 0.001). Also, undescended testes have a significantly lower blood flow compared with contralateral normal testes (p = 0.001). The volume of undescended testes was significantly lower than the contralateral normal testes. Conclusions: The volume, structure and blood flow are indirect signs of testicular damage in undescended testes. Monochrome superb microvascular imaging can detect vascularity in undescended testes better than the conventional Doppler imaging technique and color superb microvascular imaging. Based on our findings, we can report that monochrome superb microvascular imaging can be used to evaluate testicular injury and vascularity of undescended testes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Conventional ultrasound (US), which include gray scale US and Doppler US, is the first-line imaging modality for the evaluation of renal allograft; however, conventional US indicators have limitations. OBJECTIVE: To explore the application value of shear-wave elastography (SWE) combined with monochrome superb microvascular imaging (mSMI) in renal allograft chronic rejection (CR). METHODS: From November 2021 to February 2022 in the Lanzhou University Second Hospital, the US features of 54 patients with renal allograft were retrospectively analyzed. Patients were categorized into two groups: stable group(n = 44) and CR group(n = 10), with clinical diagnosis as reference standard. The vascular index (VI) on mSMI and parenchymal stiffness were measured in the middle cortex of all renal allografts and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were drawn to evaluate the feasibility of differentiation. Statistically significant US features and biochemical indicators such as creatinine were scored, and the results of the scores were analyzed by ROC curve. RESULTS: The VI on mSMI of the stable group (49.5±2.0) was significantly greater than that of the CR group (33.8±5.9) (P = 0.028). There was a statistically significant difference in parenchymal stiffness between stable group (16.2kPa±1.2) and CR group (33.9kPa±6.6) (P = 0.027). The sensitivity was 90% and specificity was 81.8% of the scores in the differentiation of stable group from CR group (cut-off value, 2; P = 0.000). CONCLUSION: SWE combined with mSMI may help differentiate stable renal allograft from renal allograft CR and have the potential application value in the diagnosis of renal allograft CR.

RESUMEN

This study explored the detectability of category 3 or higher microcalcifications using 5-MP color and monochrome monitors. Contrast detail mammography phantom with polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) images were observed in color and monochrome by five radiographers, and the image quality figures (IQF) were calculated based on the gold disc locations identified. Five radiographers and two radiologists observed 200 mammograms from 100 patients (including 36 with microcalcifications) and rated the microcalcifications. The results were analyzed using area under the curve (AUC) and jackknife resampling. A paired t test was used for statistical analysis (p < 0.05). The mean IQF of color and monochrome monitors were 10.73 and 10.49 (30 mm PMMA, p = 0.653) and 8.47 and 8.74 (50 mm PMMA, p = 0.774), respectively. The mean AUC of color and monochrome monitors were 0.917 and 0.936 (p = 0.335), respectively, with windowing and magnification. The detectability of microcalcifications was not significantly different between the monitors.

RESUMEN

Conversion of standard cameras to enable them to capture images in the ultraviolet (UV) and infrared (IR) spectral regions has applications ranging from purely artistic to science and research. Taking the modification of the camera a step further and removing the color filter array (CFA) results in the formation of a monochrome camera. The spectral sensitivities of a range of cameras with different sensors which were converted to monochrome were measured and compared with standard multispectral camera conversions, with an emphasis on their behavior from the UV through to the IR regions.

RESUMEN

A previous study showed that melatonin (MEL) membrane receptors 1b (Mel1b) and Mel1c promoted the secretion of growth hormone (GH) in chick adenohypophysis cells under monochromatic green light. However, the intracellular signalling pathways of these two receptors are unclear. Therefore, cultured adenohypophysis cells derived from chickens exposed to monochromatic green light were treated with MEL, Mel1b- and Mel1c-specific blockers, protein kinase A (PKA) inhibitors and adenylate cyclase (AC), or AC activator in vitro to explore the signal transduction mechanism that promote the secretion of GH. The results showed that Mel1b and Mel1c participate in MEL-mediated green light-induced secretion of GH in chick adenohypophysis cells. However, MEL increased cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) levels, and p-PKA protein levels were blocked by a Mel1b-specific antagonist but not a Mel1c-specific antagonist, which indicated that Mel1b affected the secretion of GH via the AC/cAMP/PKA signalling pathway. Moreover, Mel1b and Mel1c both activated ERK1/2 to regulate the secretion of GH. In addition, intracellular and extracellular Ca2+ channels were also involved in secretion of GH in chick adenohypophysis cells. These results demonstrate that the MEL mediated green light-induced secretion of GH in chick adenohypophysis via the Mel1b/AC/PKA/ERK1/2, Mel1c/ERK1/2, and intracellular and extracellular Ca2+ channel signalling pathways.

RESUMEN

Lack of rapid, non-destructive, and precision sorting and grading automatic tools for quality and safety assurance of mango fruit, in India, limits its share in the global market (< 1%) despite being the world's largest producer. External defects on the surface of mango fruit are very common and a major cause of quality deterioration as well as degradation of market value. The goal of this work is, thus, to develop a computer vision system for defect detection of mangoes using monochrome cameras and to check its potential for detecting the defect. Considering the above facts an algorithm was developed and its performance was evaluated based on accuracy, efficiency, and average inspection time. The average accuracy and efficiency of the developed algorithm for defect detection was obtained as 88.75% and 97.88%, respectively. Monochrome computer vision systems are very successful and have great potential to detect various common external defects such as a black lesions, mechanical damage, etc. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: The online version of this article (10.1007/s13197-020-04939-9) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.

RESUMEN

An image analysis method for identifying marbling on exposed boneless pork loin surfaces was developed, solving the problem of influences from uneven lean colour. Comparing results from RAW and JPEG images of the mid-loin pork chop showed that, except at very high marbling levels, estimation of %IMF (intramuscular fat) was similar with both image types (R2 = 0.72 and 0.74 respectively). Marbling calculated from JPEGs was positively related to %IMF, but also diverged as %IMF increased. Estimations of %IMF at the mid-loin chop from JPEGs of external loin sites showed marbling on the posterior face to be the most strongly related (r = 0.72, P < 0.0001), followed by the ventral surface (r = 0.62-0.64, P < 0.0001), and the anterior face (r = 0.56, P < 0.0001). For on-line application, computing speed is important. This study suggested that an image capture system could be reduced to the capture of a cyan-filtered monochrome JPEG image for analysis.

RESUMEN

It has been drawing much attention that type 2 diabetes mellitus is closely associated with increased incidence of numerous cancers and their poor prognosis. Consequently, malignancy has been recently recognized as one of diabetic complications in addition to various conventional complications. Furthermore, it is well known that the prevalence of renal cell carcinoma (RCC) is drastically increased in hemodialysis (HD) patients. Therefore, screening of RCCs in HD patients is a very important and urgent issue as there are no highly sensitive tumor markers for RCCs. Monochrome superb microvascular imaging (mSMI) is a relatively new Doppler ultrasound technique and is useful especially when evaluating very slow blood flow state, because this allows for imaging microvessels with low velocity in the absence of a contrast agent. Thus, mSMI might be also useful when contrast enhancement is not obvious on CT and/or contrast-enhanced ultrasonography using perflubutane or contrast agents are contraindicated. Moreover, it has been reported that mSMI could effectively detect vascularity of renal malignant tumor than benign renal mass in nondialysis patients. We propose that mSMI of ultrasonography could become one of the very useful methods for detecting RCCs at an early stage with high sensitivity in HD patients.

RESUMEN

We designed a compact, real-time LED-based endoscopic imaging system for the detection of various diseases including cancer. In gastrointestinal applications, conventional endoscopy cannot reliably differentiate tumor from normal tissue. Current hyperspectral imaging systems are too slow to be used for real-time endoscopic applications. We are investigating real-time spectral imaging for different tissue types. Our objective is to develop a catheter for real-time hyperspectral gastrointestinal endoscopy. The endoscope uses multiple wavelengths within UV, visible, and IR light spectra generated by a micro-LED array. We capture images with a monochrome micro camera, which is cost-effective and smaller than the current hyperspectral imagers. A wireless transceiver sends the captured images to a workstation for further processing, such as tumor detection. The spatial resolution of the system is defined by camera resolution and the distance to the object, while the number of LEDs in the multi-wavelength light source determines the spectral resolution. To investigate the properties and the limitations of our high-speed spectral imaging approach, we designed a prototype system. We conducted two experiments to measure the optimal forward voltages and lighting duration of the LEDs. These factors affect the maximum feasible imaging rate and resolution. The lighting duration of each LED can be shorter than 10 ms while producing an image with a high signal-to-noise ratio and no illumination interference. These results support the idea of using a high-speed camera and an LED-array for real-time hyperspectral endoscopic imaging.

RESUMEN

Laser metal deposition (LMD) is an advanced technology of additive manufacturing which involves sophisticated processes. However, it is associated with high risks of failure due to the possible generation of cracks and bubbles. If not identified in time, such defects can cause substantial losses. In this paper, real-time monitoring of LMD samples and online detection of cracks by an infrared monochrome pyrometer (IMP) could mitigate this risk. An experimental platform for crack detection in LMD samples was developed, and the identification of four simulated cracks in a 316L austenitic stainless-steel LMD sample was conducted. Data at temperatures higher than 150 °C were collected by an IMP, and the results indicated that crack depth is an important factor affecting the peak temperature. Based on this factor, the locations of cracks in LMD-316L austenitic stainless-steel samples can be determined. The proposed technique can provide real-time detection of cracks through layers of cladding during large-scale manufacturing, which suggests its relevance for optimizing the technological process and parameters, as well as reducing the possibility of cracks in the LMD process.

RESUMEN

Carbon dots (CDs) that exhibit emission over the whole visible spectrum are desired for use in light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Here, CDs displaying tunable fluorescence over the whole visible region are synthesized. Different concentrations of CDs are uniformly dispersed in epoxy resin and coated on 405 nm LED chips to obtain monochrome blue, cyan, green, yellow, red, and deep red LEDs that yield a color gamut covering 99.4% of the National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) standard. These monochrome LEDs display similar high stability. Furthermore, warm and neutral white LEDs are produced by coating cyan- and red-emitting CD layers on 405 nm LED chips, achieving color-rendering indexes (CRIs) of 96.4 and 96.6, respectively. Two fluorescent conversion layers derived from one material at different concentrations simplify the preparation of high-CRI white LEDs. The uniform weak changes of the cyan and red photoluminescence peaks during operation ensure the high stability of these CD-based white LEDs. This research provides a new avenue to develop low-cost, easy-to-prepare CDs with tunable emission colors as alternative phosphors for LED-based high-performance displays and lighting.

RESUMEN

This paper presents the effects of offset pixel aperture width on the performance of monochrome (MONO) CMOS image sensors (CISs) for a three-dimensional image sensor. Using a technique to integrate the offset pixel aperture (OPA) inside each pixel, the depth information can be acquired using a disparity from OPA patterns. The OPA is classified into two pattern types: Left-offset pixel aperture (LOPA) and right-offset pixel aperture (ROPA). These OPAs are divided into odd and even rows and integrated in a pixel array. To analyze the correlation between the OPA width and the sensor characteristics, experiments were conducted by configuring the test elements group (TEG) regions. The OPA width of the TEG region for the measurement varied in the range of 0.3-0.5 µm. As the aperture width decreased, the disparity of the image increased, while the sensitivity decreased. It is possible to acquire depth information by the disparity obtained from the proposed MONO CIS using the OPA technique without an external light source. Therefore, the proposed MONO CIS with OPA could easily be applied to miniaturized devices. The proposed MONO CIS was designed and manufactured using the 0.11 µm CIS process.

RESUMEN

Evaluation of the severity of acute cholecystitis is critical for the management of this condition. Superb microvascular imaging (SMI) enables the assessment of slow blood flow of small vessels without any contrast medium. An 84-year-old man visited our hospital with right upper abdominal pain. Computed tomography and abdominal ultrasonography showed a slight thickening of the gallbladder. White blood cell count and C-reactive protein levels were elevated. He was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis and treated conservatively with antibiotics. Two days later, his condition worsened and percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) was performed. The patient recovered and was discharged, and his drainage was withdrawn 7 days later. On admission, color-coded SMI (cSMI) showed pulsatory signals on the slightly thickened gallbladder wall. On the day of PTGBD, the intensity of the signal on cSMI had increased. Once the patient was cured, no further signal was observed on the gallbladder wall with either cSMI or mSMI. In conclusion, the strong pulsatory signal correlated with the severity of acute cholecystitis observed with cSMI and mSMI. Illustrating the signal intensity is useful for the evaluation of the severity of acute cholecystitis.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Social cognition is commonly assessed by identification of emotions in facial expressions. Presence of colour, a salient feature of stimuli, might influence emotional face perception. METHODS: We administered 2 tests of facial emotion recognition, the Emotion Recognition Test (ER40) using colour pictures and the Penn Emotional Acuity Test using monochromatic pictures, to 37 young healthy, 39 old healthy and 37 schizophrenic men. RESULTS: Among young healthy individuals recognition of emotions was more accurate and faster in colour than in monochromatic pictures. Compared to the younger group, older healthy individuals revealed impairment in identification of sad expressions in colour but not monochromatic pictures. Schizophrenia patients showed greater impairment in colour than monochromatic pictures of neutral and sad expressions and overall total score compared to both healthy groups. Patients showed significant correlations between cognitive impairment and perception of emotion in colour but not monochromatic pictures. CONCLUSIONS: Colour enhances perception of general emotional clues and this contextual effect is impaired in healthy ageing and schizophrenia. The effects of colour need to be considered in interpreting and comparing studies of emotion perception. Coloured face stimuli may be more sensitive to emotion processing impairments but less selective for emotion-specific information than monochromatic stimuli. This may impact on their utility in early detection of impairments and investigations of underlying mechanisms.

RESUMEN

Dry imaging cameras are important hard copy devices in radiology. Using dry imaging camera, multiformat images of digital modalities in radiology are created from a sealed unit of unexposed films. The functioning of a modern dry camera, involves a blend of concurrent processes, in areas of diverse sciences like computers, mechanics, thermal, optics, electricity and radiography. Broadly, hard copy devices are classified as laser and non laser based technology. When compared with the working knowledge and technical awareness of different modalities in radiology, the understanding of a dry imaging camera is often superficial and neglected. To fill this void, this article outlines the key features of a modern dry camera and its important issues that impact radiology workflow.

RESUMEN

Objective: Evaluate the influence of monochrome LCDs with different resolutions for the quality of detail imaging and detection performance of lesions. Methods: 93 DR chest images were selected from PACS on-line, including 38 positive cases, 32 suspected cases and 23 normal cases. The positive cases were divided into two groups A and B according the diameter of pulmonary nodules. Three of high-, mid-and low-experienced radiologists interpreted the 93 images on three types of displays independently. Each observer marked their confidence of the presence of pulmonary nodule with five-point rating scale : (1)definitely absent, (2)probably absent, (3)possibly present, (4)probably present and (5)definitely present, and the visual quality of lung markings with three-point rating scale:(1) excellent, (2)free, (3) inferior. Software SPSS 13.0 was used to analyze the results. Results: For the detection performance of lesion, while detecting nodules of Group A, the areas under ROC curves were 0.643、0.686、0.739 on 2MP、3MP and 3MP display for high-experienced radiologist. Those were 0.636、0.682、0.717 for mid-experienced radiologist and 0.623、0.656、0.721 for low-experienced radiologist; while detecting nodules of Group B, those were 0.813、0.832、0.846 for high-experienced d radiologist, 0.773、0.824、0.838 for mid-experienced radiologist and 0.763、 0.7.73、0.833 for low-experienced radiologist. There were no significant differences among detection performance ofradiodiagnostic systems. For the quality of detail imaging, while interpreting the visualization of lung markings, the difference between high-and mid-experienced radiologist or between high-and low-experienced radiologist on 5MP display was conspicuous (P<0.05). But the differences of other comparisons did not reach the significant level. Conclusions: For the detection performance ofpulmouary nodules, it is comparable among different radiodiagnostic systems; for the visualization of lung markings, high-experienced radiologist could get more information on 5MP display.
