PURPOSE: Endurance training improves running performance in distances where oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) is the main ATP source. Here, a dynamic computer model is used to assess possible biochemical mechanisms underlying this improvement. METHODS: The dynamic computer model is based on the "Pi double-threshold" mechanism of muscle fatigue, according to which the additional ATP usage appears when (1) inorganic phosphate (Pi) exceeds a critical value (Picrit); (2) exercise is terminated because of fatigue, when Pi reaches a peak value (Pipeak); (3) the Pi increase and additional ATP usage increase mutually stimulate each other. RESULTS: The endurance-training-induced increase in oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS) activity attenuates the reaching of Pipeak by Pi (and thus of V ˙ O2max by V ˙ O2) at increased power output. This in turn allows a greater work intensity, and thus higher speed, to be achieved before exercise is terminated because of fatigue at the end of the 1500 m run. Thus, identical total work is performed in a shorter time. Probably, endurance training also lowers Pipeak, which improves the homeostasis of "bioenergetic" muscle metabolites: ADP, PCr, Pi and H+ ions. CONCLUSIONS: The present dynamic computer model generates clear predictions of metabolic changes that limit performance during 1500 m running. It contributes to our mechanistic understanding of training-induced improvement in running performance and stimulates further physiological experimental studies.

Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is a determining indicator for cardiorespiratory capacity in endurance athletes, and epigenetics is crucial in its levels and variability. This initial study examined a broad plasma miRNA profile of twenty-three trained elite endurance athletes with similar training volumes but different VO2max in response to an acute maximal graded endurance test. Six were clustered as higher/lower levels based on their VO2max (75.4 ± 0.9 and 60.1 ± 5.0 mL.kg-1.min-1). Plasma was obtained from athletes before and after the test and 15 ng of total RNA was extracted and detected using an SYBR-based 1113 miRNA RT-qPCR panel. A total of 51 miRNAs were differentially expressed among group comparisons. Relative amounts of miRNA showed a clustering behavior among groups regarding distinct performance/time points. Significantly expressed miRNAs were used to perform functional bioinformatic analysis (DIANA tools). Fatty acid metabolism pathways were strongly targeted for the significantly different miRNAs in all performance groups and time points (p < 0.001). Although this pathway does not solely determine endurance performance, their significant contribution is certainly achieved through the involvement of miRNAs. A highly genetically dependent gold standard variable for performance evaluation in a homogeneous group of elite athletes allowed genetic/epigenetic aspects related to fatty acid pathways to emerge.

BACKGROUND: Determining maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) is essential for evaluating cardiorespiratory fitness. While laboratory-based testing is considered the gold standard, sports watches or fitness trackers offer a convenient alternative. However, despite the high number of wrist-worn devices, there is a lack of scientific validation for VO2max estimation outside the laboratory setting. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to compare the Apple Watch Series 7's performance against the gold standard in VO2max estimation and Apple's validation findings. METHODS: A total of 19 participants (7 female and 12 male), aged 18 to 63 (mean 28.42, SD 11.43) years were included in the validation study. VO2max for all participants was determined in a controlled laboratory environment using a metabolic gas analyzer. Thereby, they completed a graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer until reaching subjective exhaustion. This value was then compared with the estimated VO2max value from the Apple Watch, which was calculated after wearing the watch for at least 2 consecutive days and measured directly after an outdoor running test. RESULTS: The measured VO2max (mean 45.88, SD 9.42 mL/kg/minute) in the laboratory setting was significantly higher than the predicted VO2max (mean 41.37, SD 6.5 mL/kg/minute) from the Apple Watch (t18=2.51; P=.01) with a medium effect size (Hedges g=0.53). The Bland-Altman analysis revealed a good overall agreement between both measurements. However, the intraclass correlation coefficient ICC(2,1)=0.47 (95% CI 0.06-0.75) indicated poor reliability. The mean absolute percentage error between the predicted and the actual VO2max was 15.79%, while the root mean square error was 8.85 mL/kg/minute. The analysis further revealed higher accuracy when focusing on participants with good fitness levels (mean absolute percentage error=14.59%; root-mean-square error=7.22 ml/kg/minute; ICC(2,1)=0.60 95% CI 0.09-0.87). CONCLUSIONS: Similar to other smartwatches, the Apple Watch also overestimates or underestimates the VO2max in individuals with poor or excellent fitness levels, respectively. Assessing the accuracy and reliability of the Apple Watch's VO2max estimation is crucial for determining its suitability as an alternative to laboratory testing. The findings of this study will apprise researchers, physical training professionals, and end users of wearable technology, thereby enhancing the knowledge base and practical application of such devices in assessing cardiorespiratory fitness parameters.

Blood properties influence aerobic exercise performance. While vascular volumes and hemoglobin mass (Hbmass) are elevated in trained individuals, evidence of sex differences in vascular volumes is equivocal due to inadequate matching of aerobic fitness between males and females. This cross-sectional study aimed to compare hematological values normalized to body mass (BM) and fat-free mass (FFM) between males (n = 45) and females (n = 34) matched for aerobic fitness (V̇O2max) normalized to FFM (mL∙kg FFM-1∙min- 1). Data included body composition measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), V̇O2max from an incremental test, and hematological values derived from a CO rebreathe test. Fat mass was unrelated to blood volume (BV; R2 = 0.02, P = 0.26) and Hbmass (R2 = 0.03, P = 0.16), while FFM was the strongest predictor of both (R2 = 0.75 and R2 = 0.83, respectively, P < 0.001). Females exhibited higher FFM-normalized BV (+4%, P < 0.05) and plasma volume (PV) (+14%, P < 0.001) and lower red blood cell volume (RBCV) (-8%, P < 0.001) and Hbmass (-8%, P < 0.001) compared to males. Positive correlations between aerobic fitness and relative Hbmass and BV were observed in both sexes when normalized to BM and FFM (0.48 < r < 0.71; P < 0.003). Stepwise multiple regression models, including FFM, V̇O2max, height, and [Hb], provided accurate predictions of Hbmass (R2 = 0.91) and BV (R2 = 0.85). Overall, sex differences persist in relative Hbmass, BV, PV, and RBCV after matching of aerobic fitness, though relative BV and PV were greater in females. These findings suggest sex-specific strategies in oxygen delivery and/or extraction, and they underscore the importance of carefully selecting normalization practices when assessing sex-based differences in hematological variables.

Improving peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak) and maximal strength are key objectives of rehabilitation for patients with unspecific musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). Although high-intensity training yield superior outcomes for these factors, patients with MSDs may not tolerate high-intensity due to pain and fear. Therefore, we examined the effect and feasibility of incorporating aerobic high-intensity intervals (HIITs) and maximal strength training (MST) in a standard clinical rehabilitation program for patients with unspecific MSDs. 73 patients (45 ± 10 years) with MSDs partaking in a standard, public, and 4-week rehabilitation program were randomized to high-intensity training (HG: 4 × 4 minutes intervals at ∼90% of maximal heart rate; HRmax, and 4 × 4 repetitions leg press at ∼90% of 1 repetition maximum; 1RM, with maximal intended velocity) or keep todays treatment of low-to moderate-intensity training (MG: various cycling, walking, and/or running activities at ∼70%-80% of HRmax and 3 × 8 - 10 repetitions leg press at ∼75% of 1RM without maximal intended velocity). HG improved V̇O2peak (12 ± 7%) and leg press 1RM (43 ± 34%) more than moderate-intensity group (V̇O2peak; 5 ± 6%, 1RM; 19 ± 18%, both p < 0.001). We observed that no adverse events and no between-group differences in dropout rate or self-reported quality of life (both p > 0.05). There were positive correlations between improved V̇O2peak and improved physical (p = 0.024) and emotional (0.016) role functioning. We conclude that both high-intensity interval training and MST are feasible and improve V̇O2peak and maximal strength more than standard low-to moderate-intensity treatment of patients with unspecific MSDs. Our findings suggest that high-intensity training should be implemented as a part of standard clinical care of this patient population.

While regular physical activity is a cornerstone of health, wellness, and vitality, the impact of endurance exercise training on molecular signaling within and across tissues remains to be delineated. The Molecular Transducers of Physical Activity Consortium (MoTrPAC) was established to characterize molecular networks underlying the adaptive response to exercise. Here, we describe the endurance exercise training studies undertaken by the Preclinical Animal Sites Studies component of MoTrPAC, in which we sought to develop and implement a standardized endurance exercise protocol in a large cohort of rats. To this end, Adult (6-mo) and Aged (18-mo) female (n = 151) and male (n = 143) Fischer 344 rats were subjected to progressive treadmill training (5 d/wk, ∼70%-75% VO2max) for 1, 2, 4, or 8 wk; sedentary rats were studied as the control group. A total of 18 solid tissues, as well as blood, plasma, and feces, were collected to establish a publicly accessible biorepository and for extensive omics-based analyses by MoTrPAC. Treadmill training was highly effective, with robust improvements in skeletal muscle citrate synthase activity in as little as 1-2 wk and improvements in maximum run speed and maximal oxygen uptake by 4-8 wk. For body mass and composition, notable age- and sex-dependent responses were observed. This work in mature, treadmill-trained rats represents the most comprehensive and publicly accessible tissue biorepository, to date, and provides an unprecedented resource for studying temporal-, sex-, and age-specific responses to endurance exercise training in a preclinical rat model.

Background: Health-related fitness directly depends on the level of physical activity of the individual. Inactivity contributes to around 3.3% of all deaths, making the lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyles among the young generation a current source of concern. There is a paucity of research on the association between PA and health-related physical fitness among young people. In the perspective of this, the objective of this research was to find out the effect of PA levels on physical fitness in healthy adults. Methodology: A total of 419 students between the ages of 18 and 25 participated in this cross-sectional survey. The "Global Physical Activity Questionnaire (GPAQ)" was used to evaluate the PA. Their body fat percentage was measured using a skin fold caliper, followed by measurement of VO2max using a gas analyzer and hand grip strength and endurance assessment with the help of a computerized dynamometer. For statistical analysis, Karl Pearson's correlation coefficients and the ANOVA test were utilized. Results: PA was positively correlated with VO2 max (r=0.429), and handgrip strength (r=0.408) while negatively correlated with body fat % (r=-.315). VO2 max, body fat, and hand grip strength differ significantly amongst participants having different physical activity levels. (p-value =<0.05). Conclusion: This research concludes that PA is associated with physical fitness. PA will lead to a definite improvement in overall physical fitness. With the help of the results of this study, young adults can be motivated for physical fitness.

BACKGROUND: Testing and evaluating athletes is necessary and should include performance, body composition, and nutrition. The purpose of this study was to report assessments of dietary intake, V˙O2max, and body composition in D1 collegiate athletes and examine relationships between these assessments. METHODS: Dietary intake was assessed with 3-day recalls and compared to recommendations, and body composition was assessed via bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) (n = 48). V˙O2max was evaluated using a graded exercise test (GXT) with a verification bout (n = 35). Reliability between "true" V˙O2max and verification was determined. Correlations and regressions were performed. RESULTS: Energy, carbohydrate, and micronutrient intake was lower than recommendations. Mean V˙O2max was 47.3 and 47.4 mL·kg-1·min-1 for GXT and verification, respectively. While correlations were apparent among dietary intake, V˙O2max, and body composition, percent fat-free mass (%FFM) predicted 36% of V˙O2max. CONCLUSIONS: Collegiate athletes are not meeting energy and carbohydrate recommendations and exceed fat recommendations. Vitamin D and magnesium were low in all sports, and iron and calcium were low in females. V˙O2max ranged from 35.6 to 63.0 mL·kg-1·min-1, with females below average and males meeting typical values for their designated sport. Assessing D1 athletes can provide guidance for sports dietitians, coaches, and strength and conditioning specialists to track and monitor nutrition in athletes.

BACKGROUND: Patients with schizophrenia suffer from physical health conditions, culminating in reduced physical functioning with enormous costs for patients and society. Although aerobic endurance and skeletal muscle strength, typically reduced in this population, relate to cognition and function, no study has explored their respective contributions to performance of functional skills and everyday tasks. METHODS: In a cross-sectional study, 48 outpatients (28/20 men/women; 35 ± 11(SD) years) with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (ICD-10; F20-25) were administered the UCSD Performance-based Skills Assessment-Brief (UPSA-B; functional skills), Specific Level of Functioning (SLOF; functional performance) and the Positive and Negative Syndrome (PANSS) scale. Peak oxygen uptake (V̇O2peak) was assessed along with leg press maximal muscle strength (1RM) and mechanical power. RESULTS: UPSA-B performance was associated with V̇O2peak (r = 0.28,p < 0.05), accounting for 8 % (p < 0.05) of shared variance, but was unrelated to 1RM and mechanical power. The SLOF physical functioning domain was associated with V̇O2peak (r = 0.30,p < 0.05) and 1RM (r = 0.24,p < 0.05), while SLOF personal care (r = 0.27,p < 0.05) and activities (r = 0.30,p < 0.05) were related only to V̇O2peak. Hierarchical regression analyses revealed that while V̇O2peak and age combined to account for 20 % (p < 0.05) of the variance in physical functioning, the contribution of 1RM was eliminated after adjusting for age. V̇O2peak and negative symptoms combined predicted 24 % and 35 % of the variance in personal care and activities, respectively. UPSA-B scores did not add to the prediction of SLOF scores. CONCLUSIONS: Although V̇O2peak and 1RM both relate to functional outcomes, the combination of V̇O2peak, age, and negative symptoms exert the greatest detrimental influence on functional performance beyond skills deficits.

This study investigated whether a heavy-intensity priming exercise precisely prescribed within the heavy-intensity domain would lead to a greater peak-power output (POpeak) and a longer maximal oxygen uptake (V̇o2max) plateau. Twelve recreationally active adults participated in this study. Two visits were required: 1) a step-ramp-step test [ramp-incremental (RI) control], and 2) an RI test preceded by a priming exercise within the heavy-intensity domain (RI primed). A piecewise equation was used to quantify the V̇o2 plateau duration (V̇o2plateau-time). The mean response time (MRT) was computed during the RI control condition. The delta (Δ) V̇o2 slope (S; mL·min-1·W-1) and V̇o2-Y intercept (Y; mL·min-1) within the moderate-intensity domain between conditions (RI primed minus RI control) were also assessed using a novel graphical analysis. V̇o2plateau-time (P = 0.001; d = 1.27) and POpeak (P = 0.003; d = 1.08) were all greater in the RI primed. MRT (P < 0.001; d = 2.45) was shorter in the RI primed compared with the RI control. A larger ΔV̇o2plateau-time was correlated with a larger ΔMRT between conditions (r = -0.79; P = 0.002). This study demonstrated that heavy-intensity priming exercise lengthened the V̇o2plateau-time and increased POpeak. The overall faster RI-V̇o2 responses seem to be responsible for the longer V̇o2plateau-time. Specifically, a shorter MRT, but not changes in RI-V̇o2-slopes, was associated with a longer V̇o2plateau-time following priming exercise.NEW & NOTEWORTHY It remains unclear whether priming exercise extends the maximal oxygen uptake (V̇o2max) plateau and increases peak-power output (POpeak) during ramp-incremental (RI) tests. This study demonstrates that a priming exercise, precisely prescribed within the heavy-intensity domain, extends the plateau at V̇o2max and leads to a greater POpeak. Specifically, the extended V̇o2max plateau was associated with accelerated RI-V̇o2 responses.

BACKGROUND:  Athletes' physical prowess plays a crucial role in their ability to succeed in any sporting endeavor. Each athlete on the field must have an exceptional aerobic capacity to withstand fierce competition and stringent regulatory guidelines. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2 max) is a quantitative measure of aerobic capacity and is regarded as one of the most reliable indicators of cardiorespiratory and overall physical fitness of an individual by sports physiologists. The study aims to evaluate the VO2 max of athletes in comparison with nonathletes during treadmill and lower limb cycle ergometry exercises as assessed in the Sports Physiology Laboratory of a rural medical college. Treadmill exercise and bicycle ergometer exercise are the most common to perform as indoor aerobic exercises to assess one's physical fitness. Both these tests are equally useful in eliciting cardiac and vascular responses, so both these modalities were used to assess aerobic fitness. METHODS:  This cross-sectional study, which examined participants aged 17-25, included 30 athletes (cases) and 120 age- and sex-matched controls. The VO2 max was evaluated using the Metabolic Module of Lab Chart Software, which was investigated through the PowerLab data acquisition system, AD Instruments (Bella Vista, NSW, Australia). RESULTS:  The mean age of male athletes was 20.51 ± 2.69 years and of female athletes was 20.53 ± 1.62 years. The mean and standard deviation of VO2 max on the treadmill for male cases was 52.37 ± 8.78 mL/kg/min and for female cases was 40.96 ± 4.06 mL/kg/min, and on a cycle ergometer for male cases was 45.21 ± 9.43 mL/kg/min and for female cases was 34.32 ± 5.12 mL/kg/min. For the control group, the mean age of control males was 21.2 ± 2.62 years and of control females was 20.36 ± 1.5 years. The mean and standard deviation of VO2 max on the treadmill for control males was 33.35 ± 3.77 mL/kg/min and for control females was 25.09 ± 7.07 mL/kg/min, and on the cycle ergometer for control males was 34.17 ± 2.75 mL/kg/min and for control females was 24.15 ± 5.35 mL/kg/min. CONCLUSION: This study showed significantly (p < 0.001) higher VO2 max levels in athletes of both genders compared to their age- and sex-matched controls upon exercise on the treadmill and cycle ergometer. This study underscores the significance of better cardiorespiratory fitness in athletes than nonathletes, giving pertinent insights about their aerobic capacity, which is precisely measured and expressed in terms of VO2.

Objectives: To test the hypothesis that 'live high-base train high-interval train low' (HiHiLo) altitude training, compared to 'live low-train high' (LoHi), yields greater benefits on performance and physiological adaptations. Methods: Sixteen young male middle-distance runners (age, 17.0 ± 1.5 y; body mass, 58.8 ± 4.9 kg; body height, 176.3 ± 4.3 cm; training years, 3-5 y; training distance per week, 30-60 km.wk-1) with a peak oxygen uptake averaging ~65 ml.min-1.kg-1 trained in a normobaric hypoxia chamber (simulated altitude of ~2,500 m, monitored by heart rate ~170 bpm; thrice weekly) for 3 weeks. During this period, the HiHiLo group (n = 8) stayed in normobaric hypoxia (at ~2,800 m; 10 h.day-1), while the LoHi group (n = 8) resided near sea level. Before and immediately after the intervention, peak oxygen uptake and exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia responses (incremental cycle test) as well as running performance and time-domain heart rate variability (5-km time trial) were assessed. Hematological variables were monitored at baseline and on days 1, 7, 14 and 21 during the intervention. Results: Peak oxygen uptake and running performance did not differ before and after the intervention in either group (all P > 0.05). Exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia responses, measured both at submaximal (240 W) and maximal loads during the incremental test, and log-transformed root mean square of successive R-R intervals during the 4-min post-run recovery period, did not change (all P > 0.05). Hematocrit, mean reticulocyte absolute count and reticulocyte percentage increased above baseline levels on day 21 of the intervention (all P < 0.001), irrespective of group. Conclusions: Well-trained runners undertaking base training at moderate simulated altitude for 3 weeks, with or without hypoxic residence, showed no performance improvement, also with unchanged time-domain heart rate variability and exercise-induced arterial hypoxemia responses.

BACKGROUND: Large scale population norms for peak oxygen uptake (VO2peak) during cycle ergometry (CE) have been published for men and women across a wide range of ages. Although upper body functional capacity has an important role in activities of daily living far less is known regarding the effect of age and sex on upper body functional capacity (i.e. arm crank ergometry; ACE). The aim of this review was to determine the effect of age and sex on VO2peak obtained during ACE and CE in the same participants. METHOD: The review was pre-registered with PROSEPERO (Ref: CRD42022349566). A database search using Academic Search Complete including CINAHL complete, CINHAL Ultimate, Medline, PubMed, SPORTDiscus was undertaken. RESULTS: The initial search yielded 460 articles which was reduced to 243 articles following removal of duplicates. Twenty-five articles were subsequently excluded based on title resulting in 218 articles considered for retrieval. Following review of the abstracts, 78 further articles were excluded leaving 140 to be assessed for eligibility. Eighty-five articles were subsequently excluded, resulting in 55 articles being included. The decrease in VO2peak with age during CE was consistent with previous studies. Decreases in VO2peak during ACE with age, although paralleling those of CE, appeared to be of greater functional importance. When changes in VO2peak were considered below the age of 50 years little change was observed for absolute VO2peak during ACE and CE. In contrast, relative VO2peak demonstrated decreases in VO2peak for both ACE and CE likely reflecting increases in body mass and body fat percentage with age. After 50 years of age absolute and relative VO2peak demonstrated more similar and subtle responses. Heterogeneity across studies for both absolute and relative VO2peak between ACE and CE was large. Although strict inclusion criteria were applied, the inter-individual variation in sample populations was likely the main source of heterogeneity. There was a considerable lack data sets available for ages above 40 years of age. CONCLUSIONS: These responses suggest that upper body VO2peak decreases in line with that of the lower body but, due to the lower peak values achieved during ACE, decreases in VO2peak may have more profound functional impact compared to that for the lower body. Using absolute and relative measures of VO2peak results in different age-related profiles when considered below 50 years of age. To further our understanding of whole body ageing more data is required for participants in mid and later life. The association between VO2peak and underlying physiological factors with age needs to be studied further, particularly in conjunction with activities of daily living and independent living.

Adults who have had an amputation face barriers to having an active lifestyle which attenuates cardiorespiratory fitness. Prior studies in amputees typically involve treadmill walking or arm ergometry, yet physiological responses to bilateral leg cycling are less understood. This study assessed the hemodynamic and metabolic responses to moderate and vigorous cycle ergometry in men who have had a transtibial amputation (TTA). Five men who had had a unilateral TTA (age = 39 ± 15 yr) and six controls (CONs) without an amputation (age = 31 ± 11 yr) performed two 20 min bouts of cycling differing in intensity. Cardiac output (CO), stroke volume (SV), and oxygen consumption (VO2) were measured during moderate intensity continuous exercise (MICE) and high intensity interval exercise (HIIE) using thoracic impedance and indirect calorimetry. In response to MICE and HIIE, the HR and VO2 levels were similar (p > 0.05) between groups. Stroke volume and CO were higher (p < 0.05) in the CONs, which was attributed to their higher body mass. In men with TTAs, HIIE elicited a peak HR = 88%HRmax and substantial blood lactate accumulation, representing vigorous exercise intensity. No adverse events were exhibited in the men with TTAs. The men with TTAs show similar responses to MICE and HIIE versus the CONs.

Oxygen uptake (V˙ O2) was measured during a non-exhaustive high-intensity intermittent cross-exercise (HIICE) protocol consisting of four alternating bouts of 20 â€‹s running (R) and three bouts of bicycle exercise (BE) at ∼160% and ∼170% maximal oxygen uptake (V˙ O2max), respectively, with 10 â€‹s between-bout rests (sequence R-BE-R-BE-R-BE-R). The V˙ O2 during the last BE ([52.2 â€‹± â€‹5.0] mL·kg-1·min-1) was significantly higher than the V˙ O2max of the BE ([48.0 â€‹± â€‹5.4] mL·kg-1·min-1, n â€‹= â€‹30) and similar to that of running. For clarifying the underlying mechanisms, a corresponding HIICE-protocol with BE and arm cranking ergometer exercise (AC) was used (sequence AC-AC-BE-AC-BE-AC-AC-BE). In some experiments, thigh blood flow was occluded by a cuff around the upper thigh. Without occlusion, the V˙ O2 during the AC ([39.2 â€‹± â€‹7.1] mL·kg-1·min-1 [6th bout]) was significantly higher than the V˙ O2max of AC ([30.2 â€‹± â€‹4.4] mL·kg-1·min-1, n â€‹= â€‹7). With occlusion, the corresponding V˙ O2 ([29.8 â€‹± â€‹3.9] mL·kg-1·min-1) was reduced to that of the V˙ O2max of AC and significantly less than the V˙ O2 without occlusion. These findings suggest that during the last bouts of HIICE may exceed the of the specific exercise, probably because it is a summation of the V˙ O2 for the ongoing exercise plus excess post-oxygen consumption (EPOC) produced by the previous exercise with a higher V˙ O2max.

Purpose: High-intensity interval training (HIIT) may induce training-specific physiological adaptations such as improved respiratory and cardiovascular adjustments before and after the onset of high-intensity exercise, leading to improved exercise performance during high-intensity exercise. The present study investigated the effects of HIIT on time-dependent cardiorespiratory adjustment during maximal exercise and before and after initiation of high-intensity exercise, as well as on maximal exercise performance. Methods: 21 healthy male college students were randomly assigned to HIIT group (n = 11) or control group (n = 10). HIIT group performed training on a cycle ergometer once a week for 8 weeks. The training consisted of three bouts of exercise at 95% maximal work rate (WRmax) until exhaustion. Before and after the HIIT program, dynamic cardiorespiratory function was investigated by ramp and step exercise tests, and HIIT-induced cardiac morphological changes were assessed using echocardiography. Results: HIIT significantly improved not only maximal oxygen uptake and minute ventilation, but also maximal heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and time to exhaustion in both exercise tests (p < 0.05). Time-dependent increases in minute ventilation (VE) and HR before and at the start of exercise were significantly enhanced after HIIT. During high-intensity exercise, there was a strong correlation between percent change (from before to after HIIT program) in time to exhaustion and percent change in HRmax (r = 0.932, p < 0.001). Furthermore, HIIT-induced cardiac morphological changes such as ventricular wall hypertrophy was observed (p < 0.001). Conclusion: We have demonstrated that HIIT at 95% WRmax induces training-specific adaptations such as improved cardiorespiratory adjustments, not only during maximal exercise but also before and after the onset of high-intensity exercise, improvement of exercise performance mainly associated with circulatory systems.

This study investigated the effectiveness of supplementing regular preseason soccer training with a supramaximal intermittent shuttle-run training (ISRT) model prescribed from Carminatti's Test peak speed (PST-CAR) in aerobic performance-related indices and sprinting speed in male junior soccer players. Twenty-three national-level soccer players (mean ± SD; age 18.07 ± 0.9 y, body height 1.76 ± 0.65 m, body mass 71.9 ± 8.7 kg) were assigned to either an experimental group (EG; n = 13) performing ISRT + soccer training or a control group (CG; n = 10) that followed regular preseason soccer training alone. The following tests were applied before and after the eight-week training intervention: (i) incremental treadmill tests (VO2max and lactate minimum speed - LMS); (ii) linear 30-m sprint test and Carminatti's Test (PST-CAR). Results indicated larger gains for the EG in LMS (Δ = 9.53% vs. 2.82%) and PST-CAR (Δ = 5.50% vs. 2.10%) than in the CG. Furthermore, changes in VO2max produced higher effect size (d) values for the EG (Δ = 6.67%; d = 0.59) than the CG (Δ = 1.88%; d = 0.18). Both groups improved (p = 0.002) their flying 20-m sprint speed (EG: Δ = 1.01%; CG: Δ = 1.56%). However, small decreases were observed for 10-m sprint speed in the CG (Δ = -2.19%; d = -0.44), while only trivial changes were noticed for the EG (Δ = -0.50%; d = -0.16). Our data support that additional supramaximal ISRT is an effective training stimulus to enhance aerobic performance-related indices and promote small improvements in maximal running speed without impairing the soccer players' acceleration capacity. This study also shows that PST-CAR can be useful for individualizing running intensity in supramaximal ISRT modes.

The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of plant- versus animal-based food intake before exercise on arterial function and subsequent aerobic exercise capacity. Eleven healthy adult males (mean age, 22.6 ± 1.8 years) participated in this study. A plant- or animal-based randomized meal type crossover comparison was conducted on separate days with a uniform protein, fat, and carbohydrate balance. Both carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (cfPWV), femoral-ankle pulse wave velocity (faPWV), and brachial artery flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) were measured as indexes of aortic and peripheral arterial stiffness and vascular endothelial function, respectively, before and at 120 min after the meal. After these measurements, maximal oxygen uptake was assessed using a graded power test on an electronically braked cycle ergometer. The results revealed that cfPWV was significantly lower, whereas FMD was significantly higher, at 120 min after compared with before the plant-based meal (p = 0.01 and 0.02, respectively). By contrast, cfPWV and FMD did not change at 120 min after compared with before the animal-based meal. In addition, faPWV did not change at 120 min after compared with before the meal for either meal type. Maximal oxygen uptake was higher in the plant- than in the animal-based meal type (p = 0.02). These results suggest that pre-exercise plant-based food intake may improve central arterial stiffness and vascular endothelial function, which may have favorable implications for aerobic exercise capacity.

The aim of this study was to examine the acute effects of a non-caloric energy drink (C4E) compared to a traditional sugar-containing energy drink (MED) and non-caloric placebo (PLA) on exercise performance and cardiovascular safety. Thirty healthy, physically active males (25 ± 4 y) completed three experimental visits under semi-fasted conditions (5-10 h) and in randomized order, during which they consumed C4E, MED, or PLA matched for volume, appearance, taste, and mouthfeel. One hour after drink consumption, participants completed a maximal, graded exercise test (GXT) with measurement of pulmonary gases, an isometric leg extension fatigue test (ISOFTG), and had their cardiac electrical activity (ECG), leg blood flow (LBF), and blood pressure (BP) measured throughout the visit. Neither MED nor C4E had an ergogenic effect on maximal oxygen consumption, time to exhaustion, or peak power during the GXT (p > 0.05). Compared to PLA, MED reduced fat oxidation (respiratory exchange ratio (RER) +0.030 ± 0.01; p = 0.026) during the GXT and did not influence ISOFTG performance. Compared to PLA, C4E did not alter RER (p = 0.94) and improved impulse during the ISOFTG (+0.658 ± 0.25 V·s; p = 0.032). Relative to MED, C4E did not significantly improve gas exchange threshold (p = 0.05-0.07). Both MED and C4E increased systolic BP at rest (+7.1 ± 1.2 mmHg; p < 0.001 and + 5.7 ± 1.0 mmHg; p < 0.001, respectively), C4E increased SBP post-GXT (+13.3 ± 3.8 mmHg; p < 0.001), and MED increased SBP during recovery (+3.2 ± 1.1 mmHg; p < 0.001). Neither MED nor C4E influenced ECG measures (p ≥ 0.08) or LBF (p = 0.37) compared to PLA. C4E may be more efficacious for improving performance in resistance-type tasks without altering fat oxidation under semi-fasted conditions during fatiguing exercise bouts, but promotes similar changes in BP and HR to MED.
