In recent years, the occurrence of high-voltage cable buffer layer ablation faults has become frequent, posing a serious threat to the safe and stable operation of cables. Failure to promptly detect and address such faults may lead to cable breakdowns, impacting the normal operation of the power system. To overcome the limitations of existing methods for identifying buffer layer ablation faults in high-voltage cables, a method for identifying buffer layer ablation faults based on frequency domain impedance spectroscopy and artificial intelligence is proposed. Firstly, based on the cable distributed parameter model and frequency domain impedance spectroscopy, a mathematical model of the input impedance of a cable containing buffer layer ablation faults is derived. Through a simulation, the input impedance spectroscopy at the first end of the cables under normal conditions, buffer layer ablation, local aging, and inductive faults is performed, enabling the identification of inductive and capacitive faults through a comparative analysis. Secondly, the frequency domain amplitude spectroscopy of the buffer layer ablation and local aging faults are used as datasets and are input into a neural network model for training and validation to identify buffer layer ablation and local aging faults. Finally, using multiple evaluation metrics to assess the neural network model validates the superiority of the MLP neural network in cable fault identification models and experimentally confirms the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Due to the potential of the Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), they began to be increasingly used in various fields such as: environment, leisure, health, military, transport, etc. Along with increasing battery storage capacity, the UAVs began to be propulsion by Brushless DC (BLDC) motors. Failure of BLDC motors can lead to loss of control, which can cause accidents. In these conditions, it is necessary to devise methods that can find the defects of the BLDC motors in the UAVs. In this article, the authors propose a novel method to predict BLDC motor defects using machine learning. To maximize the method results, the performance of three machine learning models, K-Nearest Neighbor (KNN), Support Vector Machine (SVM) and Bayesian Network (BN) in predicting the flaws of BLDC motors, have been compared.

In this work, we consider the design of power-constrained networked control systems (NCSs) and a differential entropy-based fault-detection mechanism. For the NCS design of the control loop, we consider faults in the plant gain and unstable plant pole locations, either due to natural causes or malicious intent. Since the power-constrained approach utilized in the NCS design is a stationary approach, we then discuss the finite-time approximation of the power constraints for the relevant control loop signals. The network under study is formed by two additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN) channels located on the direct and feedback paths of the closed control loop. The finite-time approximation of the controller output signal allows us to estimate its differential entropy, which is used in our proposed fault-detection mechanism. After fault detection, we propose a fault-identification mechanism that is capable of correctly discriminating faults. Finally, we discuss the extension of the contributions developed here to future research directions, such as fault recovery and control resilience.

Oil-immersed transformers are mostly installed equipment in electrical power networks. Thus, ensuring the reliability of these equipment is paramount. Fault identification is one of the measures taken to ensure the reliability. Concerning fault identification mechanisms, several methods exist; one of which is the dissolved gas analysis (DGA) tool that has been widely used purposefully for oil-immersed transformers. The tool is used to capture and analyze the gases dissolved in the oil. Studies have proposed various fault identification methods based on this tool such as the Dornenburg, key gas, and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standards methods using DGA data. However, the accuracy of these methods seems to be limited by the context, such as the type and number of parameters used. In this study, the novel hybrid fault identification method based on multilayer neural networks (MLANN) and expert knowledge is proposed to improve the accuracy fault identification process by considering the specific characteristic parameters extracted from the historical DGA dataset. The proposed hybrid method improves accuracy by 14.46% when compared to 12 benchmark methods. This improvement portrays that our method can be integrated into a scheduling platform for maintenance decision support in an electrical power network with accuracy. Furthermore, the promising accuracy in transformer fault identification is expected to increase safety and power reliability.

Railway infrastructure maintenance is critical for ensuring safe and efficient transportation networks. Railway track surface defects such as cracks, flakings, joints, spallings, shellings, squats, grooves pose substantial challenges to the integrity and longevity of the tracks. To address these challenges and facilitate further research, a novel dataset of railway track surface faults has been presented in this paper. It is collected using the EKENH9R cameras mounted on a railway inspection vehicle. This dataset represents a valuable resource for the railway maintenance and computer vision related scientific communities. This dataset includes a diverse range of real-world track surface faults under various environmental conditions and lighting scenarios. This makes it an important asset for the development and evaluation of Machine Learning (ML), Deep Learning (DL), and image processing algorithms. This paper also provides detailed annotations and metadata for each image class, enabling precise fault classification and severity assessment of the defects. Furthermore, this paper discusses the data collection process, highlights the significance of railway track maintenance, emphasizes the potential applications of this dataset in fault identification and predictive maintenance, and development of automated inspection systems. We encourage the research community to utilize this dataset for advancing the state-of-the-art research related to railway track surface condition monitoring.

Induction motor driven pumps are a staple in many sectors of industry, and crucial equipment in naval ships. Such machines can suffer from a wide variety of issues, which may cause it to not perform its function. This can either be due to degradation of components over time, or due to incorrect installation or usage. Unexpected failure of the machine causes downtime and lowers the availability. In some cases, it can even lead to collateral damage. To prevent collateral damage and optimise the availability, many asset owners apply condition monitoring, measuring the dynamic response of the system while in operation. Two high-frequency measurement methods are widely accepted for the detection of faults in rotating machinery at an early stage: vibration measurements, and motor current and voltage measurements. These methods can also distinguish between different failure mechanisms and severities. The dataset described in this article presents experimental data of two centrifugal pumps, driven by induction motors through a variable frequency drive. Besides measurements of behaviour that is considered healthy (new bearings, well aligned), the machines have also been subjected to a variety of (simulated) faults. These faults include bearing defects, loose foot, impeller damage, stator winding short, broken rotor bar, soft foot, misalignment, unbalance, coupling degradation, cavitation and bent shaft. Most faults were implemented at multiple levels of severity for multiple motor speeds. Both vibration measurements, and current and voltage measurements were recorded for all cases. The dataset holds value for a wide range of engineers and researchers working on the development and validation of methods for damage detection, identification and diagnostics. Due to the extensive documentation of the presented data, labelling of the data is close to perfect, which makes the data particularly suitable for developing and training machine learning and other AI algorithms.

Motivated by applications to root-cause identification of faults in high-dimensional data streams that may have very limited samples after faults are detected, we consider multiple testing in models for multivariate statistical process control (SPC). With quick fault detection, only small portion of data streams being out-of-control (OC) can be assumed. It is a long standing problem to identify those OC data streams while controlling the number of false discoveries. It is challenging due to the limited number of OC samples after the termination of the process when faults are detected. Although several false discovery rate (FDR) controlling methods have been proposed, people may prefer other methods for quick detection. With a recently developed method called Knockoff filtering, we propose a knockoff procedure that can combine with other fault detection methods in the sense that the knockoff procedure does not change the stopping time, but may identify another set of faults to control FDR. A theorem for the FDR control of the proposed procedure is provided. Simulation studies show that the proposed procedure can control FDR while maintaining high power. We also illustrate the performance in an application to semiconductor manufacturing processes that motivated this development.

An escalator is an essential large-scale public transport equipment; once it fails, this inevitably affects the operation of the escalator and even leads to safety concerns, or perhaps accidents. As an important structural part of the escalator, the foundation of the main engine can cause the operation of the escalator to become abnormal when its fixing bolts become loose. Aiming to reduce the difficulty of extracting the fault features of the footing bolt when it loosens, a fault feature extraction method is proposed in this paper based on empirical wavelet transform (EWT) and the gray-gradient co-occurrence matrix (GGCM). Firstly, the Teager energy operator and multi-scale peak determination are used to improve the spectral partitioning ability of EWT, and the improved EWT is used to decompose the original foundation vibration signal into a series of empirical mode functions (EMFs). Then, the gray-gradient co-occurrence matrix of each EMF is constructed, and six texture features of the gray-gradient co-occurrence matrix are calculated as the fault feature vectors of this EMF. Finally, the fault features of all EMFs are fused, and the degree of the loosening of the escalator foundation bolt is identified using the fused multi-scale feature vector and BiLSTM. The experimental results show that the proposed method based on EWT and GGCM feature extraction can diagnose the loosening degree of foundation bolts more effectively and has a certain engineering application value.

The safety assessment of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) requires tremendous effort, as the complexity of cyber-physical systems is increasing. A well-known approach for the safety assessment of CPSs is fault injection (FI). The goal of fault injection is to find a catastrophic fault that can cause the system to fail by injecting faults into it. These catastrophic faults are less likely to occur, and finding them requires tremendous labor and cost. In this study, we propose a reinforcement learning (RL)-based method to automatically configure faults in the system under test and to find catastrophic faults in the early stage of system development at the model level. The proposed method provides a guideline to utilize high-level domain knowledge about a system model for constructing the reinforcement learning agent and fault injection setup. In this study, we used the system (safety) specification to shape the reward function in the reinforcement learning agent. The reinforcement learning agent dynamically interacted with the model under test to identify catastrophic faults. We compared the proposed method with random-based fault injection in two case studies using MATLAB/Simulink. Our proposed method outperformed random-based fault injection in terms of the severity and number of faults found.

Using an adaptive noise canceling technique (ANCT) and distance ratio principal component analysis (DRPCA), this paper proposes a new fault diagnostic model for multi-degree tooth-cut failures (MTCF) in a gearbox operating at inconsistent speeds. To account for background and disturbance noise in the vibration characteristics of gear failures, the proposed approach employs ANCT in the first stage to optimize vibration signals. The ANCT applies an adaptive denoising technique to each basic frequency segment in the whole frequency response of vibrations. Following that, a novel DRPCA is used to extract the discriminating low-dimensional features. The DRPCA initially determines each feature's relative proximity to fault categories by computing the average Euclidian distance ratio between similar and dissimilar classes. The most discriminatory features with the lowest dimensions are selected, as determined by principal component analysis (PCA). The new DRPCA is created by combining distance ratio-based feature inspection with PCA. The optimal feature set containing the most discriminative features is then fed to the support vector machine classifier to identify multiple failure categories. The experimental results indicate that the proposed model outperforms the state-of-art approaches and offers the highest identification accuracy.

The shafting systems of hydropower units work as the core component for the conversion of water energy to electric energy and have been running for a long time in the hostile hydraulic-mechanical-electrical-coupled environment-their vibration faults are frequent. How to quickly and accurately identify vibration faults to improve the reliability of the unit is a key issue. This study proposes a novel shafting vibration fault identification framework, which is divided into three coordinated stages: nonlinear modeling, signal denoising, and holographic identification. A nonlinear dynamical model of bending-torsion coupling vibration induced by multiple excitation vibration sources of the shafting system is established in the first stage. The multi-stage signal denoising method combines Savitzky-Golay (SG) smoothing filtering, singular value decomposition (SVD), and variational mode decomposition (VMD). SG-SVD-VMD is used for the guide bearing the vibration signals in the second stage. Further, the holospectrum theory is innovatively introduced to obtain the holospectra of the simulated and measured signals, and the shafting vibration faults of the real unit are identified by comparing the holospectrum of the measured signal with the simulated signal. These results show that the shafting nonlinear model can effectively reflect the vibration characteristics of the coupled vibration source and reveal the influence and fault characteristics of each external excitation on the shafting vibration. The shafting vibration faults of operating units can be identified by analyzing the holospectra of the shafting simulation signals and measuring the noise reduction signals. Thus, this framework can guide the safe and stable operation of hydropower units.

The frequent occurrence of single-phase grounding faults affects the reliable operation of power systems. When a single-phase grounding fault occurs, it is difficult to accurately identify the fault type because of the weak characterization and subtle distinction between different fault types. Therefore, this paper proposes a single-phase grounding fault type identification method based on the multi-feature transformation and fusion. Firstly, the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT) was used to preprocess the fault recorded wave data to highlight the characteristics between different fault types. Secondly, the deep learning model ResNet18 and the long short-term memory (LSTM) are designed to extract the complex abstract features and time-series correlation features from the preprocessed data set separately. Finally, it designs a fusion model to combine the advantages of heterogeneous models to identify the type of single-phase grounding fault. Experiments validate that the method is good at fully mining the characteristics of the fault types contained in the fault recorded wave data, so it can identify multiple types of faults with strong robustness and provide a reliable basis for the subsequent formulation of targeted fault-handling measures.

This paper describes the design and implementation of intelligent dynamic models for fault detection and isolation of V94.2(5)/MGT-70(2) single-axis heavy-duty gas turbine system. The series-parallel structure of nonlinear autoregressive exogenous (NARX) models are used for fault detection, which initiate greater robustness and stability against uncertainties and perturbations. Moreover, to improve the fault detection robustness against uncertainties, the Monte Carlo technique is used in the proposed fault detection structure to select the best threshold. The analysis of fault detectability and fault detection sensitivity are accomplished to analyze the performance of the suggested technique. The fault isolation process is also achieved by using the residual classification approach. The results show the feasibly, robustness, and performance of the presented approach for fault diagnosis of nonlinear systems in the presence of uncertainties.

A novel framework of model-based fault detection and identification (MFDI) for induction motor (IM)-driven rotating machinery (RM) is proposed in this study. A data-driven subspace identification (SID) algorithm is employed to obtain the IM state-space model from the voltage and current signals in a quasi-steady-state condition. This study aims to improve the frequency-domain fault detection and identification (FDI) by replacing the current signal with a residual signal where a thresholding method is applied to the residual signal. Through the residual spectrum and threshold comparison, a binary decision is made to find fault signatures in the spectrum. The statistical Q-function is used to generate the fault frequency band to distinguish between the fault signature and the noise signature. The experiment in this study is performed on a wastewater pump in an existing industrial facility to verify the proposed FDI. Two faulty conditions with mathematically known and mathematically unknown faulty signatures are experimented with and diagnosed. The study results present that the residual spectrum demonstrated to be more sensitive to fault signatures compare to the current spectrum. The proposed FDI has successfully shown to identify the fault signatures even for the mathematically unknown faulty signatures.

Rolling bearings act as key parts in many items of mechanical equipment and any abnormality will affect the normal operation of the entire apparatus. To diagnose the faults of rolling bearings effectively, a novel fault identification method is proposed by merging variational mode decomposition (VMD), average refined composite multiscale dispersion entropy (ARCMDE) and support vector machine (SVM) optimized by multistrategy enhanced swarm optimization in this paper. Firstly, the vibration signals are decomposed into different series of intrinsic mode functions (IMFs) based on VMD with the center frequency observation method. Subsequently, the proposed ARCMDE, fusing the superiorities of DE and average refined composite multiscale procedure, is employed to enhance the ability of the multiscale fault-feature extraction from the IMFs. Afterwards, grey wolf optimization (GWO), enhanced by multistrategy including levy flight, cosine factor and polynomial mutation strategies (LCPGWO), is proposed to optimize the penalty factor C and kernel parameter g of SVM. Then, the optimized SVM model is trained to identify the fault type of samples based on features extracted by ARCMDE. Finally, the application experiment and contrastive analysis verify the effectiveness of the proposed VMD-ARCMDE-LCPGWO-SVM method.

This work investigates the efficacy of deep learning (DL) for classifying C100 superconducting radio-frequency (SRF) cavity faults in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab. CEBAF is a large, high-power continuous wave recirculating linac that utilizes 418 SRF cavities to accelerate electrons up to 12 GeV. Recent upgrades to CEBAF include installation of 11 new cryomodules (88 cavities) equipped with a low-level RF system that records RF time-series data from each cavity at the onset of an RF failure. Typically, subject matter experts (SME) analyze this data to determine the fault type and identify the cavity of origin. This information is subsequently utilized to identify failure trends and to implement corrective measures on the offending cavity. Manual inspection of large-scale, time-series data, generated by frequent system failures is tedious and time consuming, and thereby motivates the use of machine learning (ML) to automate the task. This study extends work on a previously developed system based on traditional ML methods (Tennant and Carpenter and Powers and Shabalina Solopova and Vidyaratne and Iftekharuddin, Phys. Rev. Accel. Beams, 2020, 23, 114601), and investigates the effectiveness of deep learning approaches. The transition to a DL model is driven by the goal of developing a system with sufficiently fast inference that it could be used to predict a fault event and take actionable information before the onset (on the order of a few hundred milliseconds). Because features are learned, rather than explicitly computed, DL offers a potential advantage over traditional ML. Specifically, two seminal DL architecture types are explored: deep recurrent neural networks (RNN) and deep convolutional neural networks (CNN). We provide a detailed analysis on the performance of individual models using an RF waveform dataset built from past operational runs of CEBAF. In particular, the performance of RNN models incorporating long short-term memory (LSTM) are analyzed along with the CNN performance. Furthermore, comparing these DL models with a state-of-the-art fault ML model shows that DL architectures obtain similar performance for cavity identification, do not perform quite as well for fault classification, but provide an advantage in inference speed.

Perception sensors such as camera, radar, and lidar have gained considerable popularity in the automotive industry in recent years. In order to reach the next step towards automated driving it is necessary to implement fault diagnosis systems together with suitable mitigation solutions in automotive perception sensors. This is a crucial prerequisite, since the quality of an automated driving function strongly depends on the reliability of the perception data, especially under adverse conditions. This publication presents a systematic review on faults and suitable detection and recovery methods for automotive perception sensors and suggests a corresponding classification schema. A systematic literature analysis has been performed with focus on lidar in order to review the state-of-the-art and identify promising research opportunities. Faults related to adverse weather conditions have been studied the most, but often without providing suitable recovery methods. Issues related to sensor attachment and mechanical damage of the sensor cover were studied very little and provide opportunities for future research. Algorithms, which use the data stream of a single sensor, proofed to be a viable solution for both fault detection and recovery.

Rolling bearings are the widely used parts in most of the industrial automation systems. As a result, intelligent fault identification of rolling bearing is important to ensure the stable operation of the industrial automation systems. However, a major problem in intelligent fault identification is that it needs a large number of labeled samples to obtain a well-trained model. Aiming at this problem, the paper proposes a semi-supervised multi-scale convolutional generative adversarial network for bearing fault identification which uses partially labeled samples and sufficient unlabeled samples for training. The network adopts a one-dimensional multi-scale convolutional neural network as the discriminator and a multi-scale deconvolutional neural network as the generator and the model is trained through an adversarial process. Because of the full use of unlabeled samples, the proposed semi-supervised model can detect the faults in bearings with limited labeled samples. The proposed method is tested on three datasets and the average classification accuracy arrived at of 100%, 99.28% and 96.58% respectively Results indicate that the proposed semi-supervised convolutional generative adversarial network achieves satisfactory performance in bearing fault identification when the labeled data are insufficient.

Crack and shaft misalignment are two common types of fault in a rotor system, both of which have very similar dynamic response characteristics, and the vibration signals are vulnerable to noise contamination because of the interaction among different components of rotating machinery in the actual industrial environment, resulting in great difficulties in fault identification of a rotor system based on vibration signals. A method for identification of faults in the form of crack and shaft misalignments is proposed in this paper, which combines variational mode decomposition (VMD) and probabilistic principal component analysis (PPCA) to denoise the collected vibration signals from a test rig and then achieve signal feature extraction and fault classification with convolutional artificial neural network (CNN). The key parameters of the CNN are optimized and determined by genetic algorithm (GA) firstly, and the domain adaptability of the trained network is verified by the signals with different signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) values; then, the noisy vibration signals are decomposed into multiple band-limited intrinsic modal functions by VMD, and further data dimension reduction is performed by PPCA to realize the separation of the useful signals from noise; finally, the crack and shaft misalignment of the rotor system are identified by the optimized CNN. The results show that the proposed method can effectively remove the interference noise and extract the intrinsic features of the vibration signals, and the recognition rates of crack and shaft misalignment faults for the rotor system with different SNR values are more than 99%, which is considered to be very effective and useful.

The problem of fault propagation which exists in the deeply integrated GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System)/INS (Inertial Navigation System) system makes it difficult to identify faults. Once a fault occurs, system performance will be degraded due to the inability to identify and isolate the fault accurately. After analyzing the causes of fault propagation and the difficulty of fault identification, maintaining correct navigation solution is found to be the key to prevent fault propagation from occurring. In order to solve the problem, a novel robust algorithm based on convolutional neural network (CNN) is proposed. The optimal expansion factor of the robust algorithm is obtained adaptively by utilizing CNN, thus the adverse effect of fault on navigation solution can be reduced as much as possible. At last, the fault identification ability is verified by two types of experiments: artificial fault injection and outdoor occlusion. Experiment results show that the proposed robust algorithm which can successfully suppress the fault propagation is an effective solution. The accuracy of fault identification is increased by more than 20% compared with that before improvement, and the robustness of deep GNSS/INS integration is also improved.
