RESUMEN

Introduction: The SERQUAL model is a model that measures quality by comparing the level of expectations and perceptions of service recipients to identify gaps. Since students are the main recipients of services in universities, this study was conducted with the aim of the measurement of educational services from the viewpoint of medical students of Semnan University of Medical Sciences based on the SERQUAL model. Materials and Methods: The present study was based on a cross-sectional study, and its statistical population included 180 medical students. The SERQUAL questionnaire has two parts; the first part has demographic information including gender and age, and the second part has 24 questions with two parts (including the performance part and the importance part) about the quality of educational services in the form of a 5-item Likert rating list. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS-24 software. Results: In all five evaluated areas, the scores of the male group were significantly higher than the scores of the female group (P < 0.05). In all five evaluated areas, the scores of the age group less than 25 years old were significantly higher than the scores of the 25-30-year-old group (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The results of the present study showed that in general, according to the points of view of students of all different educational levels, there is a gap between the student's perception and their expectations of quality in all five dimensions of educational services. Based on this issue, it seems that educational services need to be revised and reviewed in all studied courses and in all dimensions.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Examine the association between sociodemographic factors and Individualized Education Program (IEP) establishment. DESIGN: Retrospective cohort study. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. METHODS: Participants included deaf or hard-of-hearing children who were eligible for an IEP with "deafness" or "hard of hearing" as a primary or secondary disability. Primary outcome measures were time intervals between initial referral for services and parental consent; parental consent to determination of eligibility; and initial referral to eligibility (the sum of the previous 2 intervals). Student's t tests and linear regression were used to examine the association between sociodemographic factors and the primary outcome variables. RESULTS: Of the 88 participants, 51 (58%) were male, 45 (51%) were from underrepresented minority (URM) groups, 35 (40%) spoke a primary language other than English, and 53 (60%) utilized public insurance. IEP establishment was significantly delayed in participants who required an English-language interpreter. Most of the delay occurred in the time between the initial referral and parental consent (mean: 115 vs 37 days, P = .02). There were also significant delays from the time of referral for services to eligibility in URM participants (mean: 159 vs 85 days, P = .04). Significant delays were also associated with Minority Status and Language within social vulnerability index percentile rankings. CONCLUSION: This study found that IEP establishment was delayed in both URM participants and those who required an English-language interpreter. These results highlight the importance of clear communication between the school system and caregivers in the IEP establishment process, particularly with families who require an English-language interpreter or identify as URM.

RESUMEN

The purpose of the current study was to examine the influence of individuals' help-seeking preference (HSP) and their collective perception of the organizational climate in school on teachers' mental health. Previous studies demonstrated that HSP was negatively associated with risk of burnout, suggesting that teachers who hesitate to seek help from their colleagues are more likely to have mental health problems. Thus, the current study hypothesized that a collegial organizational climate would be negatively associated with burnout. To test this hypothesis, we developed a scale to measure schoolteachers' collective perception of their organizational climate (Study 1), and the newly developed scale was used to assess its relationship with HSP and teachers' burnout risk (Study 2). The results demonstrated that younger teachers, a low level of help-seeking, and a less collaborative climate increased the risk of burnout. The results also showed a significant interaction effect, indicating that HSP was less closely associated with teachers' burnout risk if their organization was perceived as having a collegial climate. These findings clearly show how the social environment of a school's organizational climate can affect schoolteachers' mental health in Japan.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: At present, the SERVQUAL model is one of the most significant tools for measuring customers' expectations and perceptions in organizations. Determination of expectations and perceptions of students who are the main university customers from educational services can provide valuable information to the programmers to improve the condition of educational services. Therefore, this study aims to measure the quality of education services from the viewpoint of postgraduate students at Kermanshah Medical Sciences University using the SERVQUAL model in 2019. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study. The population under the study consisted of 162 students at the postgraduate education section (Master's degree and Ph.D.) studying in the second semester of the academic year of 2019 at Kermanshah Medical Sciences University. The standard SERVQUAL questionnaire was used for data collection, which included five dimensions of the quality of educational services, and the random-stratified sampling method was employed. The data were analyzed using the SPSS Statistics software (version 23.0, SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL, USA), and descriptive and other statistical tests, including the Pearson correlation coefficient, and paired and independent t-tests were performed. RESULTS: Based on the students' perspective in the provision of service there was quality gap existed in all services, and the largest gap was in the reliability dimension (-0.37), and after that, empathy (-0.37), guaranty (0.27), and responsiveness (-0.24) dimensions, respectively, and the lowest one was in the tangible dimension (0.15). There was a statistically significant observed difference between the quality gap in different educational dimensions (P > 0.001). CONCLUSION: Research findings showed that students were not meeting their expectations from the presented educational services. Hence, holding a training workshop is suggested in the field of how to serve and enhance communication skills for employees and teachers.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this scoping review is to evaluate the extent of library or librarian involvement in informatics education in the health domain. METHODS: We searched eight databases from their inception to 2019 for reports of informatics educational activities for health professionals or health professions students that involved library staff or resources. Two reviewers independently screened all titles/abstracts (n=2,196) and resolved inclusion decisions by consensus. From the full text of the 36 papers that met the inclusion criteria, we extracted data on 41 educational activities. RESULTS: The most frequent coded purposes of activities were "teaching clinical tools" (n=19, 46.3%) and "technology" (n=17; 41.5%). Medical students were the most frequent primary audience (34.1%), though 41.5% of activities had multiple audiences. Evaluation was reported for 24 activities (58.5%), only a few of which assessed short or post-activity impact on attitudes, knowledge, or skills. The most common long-term outcome was applying skills in other courses or clinical experiences. Thematic analysis yielded three areas of outcomes and issues for the library and organizational partners: expanded opportunities, technology and resource issues, and value demonstration. CONCLUSIONS: Limited published examples of health informatics educational activities provide models for library roles in informatics education. More librarians should report on their informatics educational activities and provide sufficient details on the interventions and their evaluation. This would strengthen the evidence base about the potential impact of libraries within informatics education.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to estimate the prevalence of hearing loss among noise-exposed U.S. workers within the Services sector. METHODS: Audiograms for 1.9 million workers (158,436 within Services) from 2006 to 2015 were examined. Prevalence and adjusted risk for hearing loss as compared with a reference industry were estimated for the Services sector/sub-sectors, and all industries combined. RESULTS: The prevalence of hearing loss within Services was 17 compared to 16% for all industries combined. However, many sub-sectors greatly exceeded the overall prevalence (10-33% higher) and/or had adjusted risks significantly higher than the reference industry. Workers in Administration of Urban Planning and Community and Rural Development had the highest prevalence (50%), and workers in Solid Waste Combustors and Incinerators had more than double the risk, the highest of any sub-sector. Some sub-sectors traditionally viewed as 'low-risk' also had high prevalences and risks. CONCLUSIONS: Large numbers of workers within Services have an elevated risk of hearing loss and need immediate hearing conservation efforts. Additional research and surveillance are needed for sub-sectors for which there is low awareness of hearing hazards or a lack of hearing data.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Responsibility in the higher educational system requires the universities to be sensitive on students' needs and expectations. The purpose of the present study was to examine the educational service quality among health information technology (HIT) students in Isfahan University of Medical Science based on the SERVQUAL model. METHODS: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study and carried out at the Management and Medical Information Sciences faculty of IUMS in 2018. Sixty-eight undergraduate and postgraduate students of HIT participated in this study. For collecting data, the standard SERVQUAL questionnaire was used. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS version 20 software in descriptive level. RESULTS: Findings showed that there was a positive gap in overall dimensions of educational services quality (mean discrepancy of expectations and perceives). Most mean of service gap was contributed to responsiveness dimension 1.06 (0.98 standard deviation [SD]), following that empathy 1.04 (0.97 SD), assurance 1.00 (0.83 SD), reliability 0.83 (0.76 SD), and the least gap was seen intangibles 0.61 (1.02 SD). CONCLUSION: According to the current gaps in all quality dimensions, as well as high amount of expectations in comparison with students' perception, it is required to evaluate higher education quality through implementing students' knowledge skill and creative abilities. Therefore, to improve the quality of educational services at the Faculty of Management and Medical Information, all dimensions, especially the responsiveness dimension, should be considered.

RESUMEN

This study follows 70 children determined to have Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) before age three (Time 1). Parents filled out questionnaires and standardized measures about their child when he/she was school-aged (Time 2), including information about their children's preschool, kindergarten, and grade school educational settings. At Time 2, the researchers placed children in three diagnostic groups of No ASD, ASD-Higher Functioning, and ASD-Lower Functioning. Retrospective results showed that most children were receiving intensive services at the preschool level. In kindergarten, there was some divergence among the three groups, with more intensive services continuing for the ASD groups. At school age, classroom placement and services reflected service patterns that were consistent with these three levels of disability.

RESUMEN

Social support is an important resource for reducing the risks of stress and burnout at work. It seems to be particularly helpful for educational and social professionals. The constant and intense relationships with users that characterize this kind of service can be very demanding, increasing stress and leading to burnout. While significant attention has been paid to supervisors and colleagues in the literature, users have rarely been considered as possible sources of social support. The only exception is the Zimmermann et al.'s (2011) research, focused on customer support as a resource for workers' well-being. This paper proposes the validation of the customer-initiated support scale developed by Zimmermann et al. (2011), translated into Italian and focused on educational services users (children's parents), to measure the user support perceived by workers: the User-Initiated Support Scale (UISS). In Study 1 (105 teachers), which specifically involved educators and kindergarten teachers, the items and scale properties were preliminarily examined using descriptive analyses and exploratory factor analysis (EFA). In Study 2 (304 teachers), the construct and criterion validity and scale dimensionality were analyzed using confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). In Study 3 (304 teachers from Study 2 and 296 educators), measurement invariance (MI) was tested. The EFA results from Study 1 showed a one-factor solution (explained variance, 67.2%). The scale showed good internal coherence (alpha = 0.88). The CFA in Study 2 validated the one-factor solution (comparative fit index = 0.987; standardized root mean square residual = 0.054). Bivariate correlations confirmed construct validity; the UISS was positively associated (convergent) with user gratitude, and not associated (divergent) with disproportionate customer expectations. Regarding the criterion validity test, the UISS was strongly correlated with burnout and job satisfaction. The analysis of MI performed on the Study 3 data confirmed the equality of the parameters of the covariance structure model between the two samples of kindergarten teachers and educators. This research study offers a useful version of a tool for measuring a crucial, but often ignored, protective resource for all professionals working directly with people (patients, students, and service users) that can represent important sources of well-being, directly or indirectly lessening the negative impacts of job demands.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Websites as one of the initial steps towards an e-government adoption do facilitate delivery of online and customer-oriented services. In this study we intended to investigate the role of the websites of medical universities in providing educational and research services following the E-government maturity model in the Iranian universities. METHODS: This descriptive and cross- sectional study was conducted through content analysis and benchmarking the websites in 2012. The research population included the entire medical university website (37). Delivery of educational and research services through these university websites including information, interaction, transaction, and Integration were investigated using a checklist. The data were then analyzed by means of descriptive statistics and using SPSS software. RESULTS: Level of educational and research services by websites of the medical universities type I and II was evaluated medium as 1.99 and 1.89, respectively. All the universities gained a mean score of 1 out of 3 in terms of integration of educational and research services. CONCLUSIONS: Results of the study indicated that Iranian universities have passed information and interaction stages, but they have not made much progress in transaction and integration stages. Failure to adapt to e-government in Iranian medical universities in which limiting factors such as users' e-literacy, access to the internet and ICT infrastructure are not so crucial as in other organizations, suggest that e-government realization goes beyond technical challenges.

INTRODUCTION: Universities provide different facilities for talented students. The aim of this research was to comparatively examine the rate of satisfaction among the talented students with the services offered to them at different Iranian universities. METHODS: This was a survey study in which a researcher-made questionnaire was used to collect the data. The statistical population of this research consisted of all the talented students at four universities who had been admitted at these universities from 2003 to 2009. Using the formula, the total number of samples was estimated to be approximately 328. RESULTS: The research findings indicated that the talented students did not have satisfaction with the educational situation, and no statistically significant difference was observed among the different universities with regard to this issue. CONCLUSION: According to the findings it is suggested that universities offer more financial facilities for research, and attending conferences, and provide rich-content and valuable classes, and active and creative teaching methods. It is also proposed that educational workshops on detecting talented students and the manner of dealing with them be convened for faculty members.
