RESUMEN

New remains of a Taymyr mammoth, including bones, bone collagen, hairs, skin, and soft (muscle and fat) tissues were studied comprehensively by mineralogical, spectroscopic, chromatographic, and isotope-geochemical methods. The results were used to infer the mammoth's biological age and diet, paleoclimatic conditions, and the mechanisms and degree of fossilization of the remains.

Anatomy compromises the precision and accuracy of measurements made of the body length and head size of live snakes. Body measures (snout-vent length, SVL) incorporate many synovial intervertebral joints, each allowing flexion and limited extension and compression. Radiographs of the trunk in 14 phylogenetically diverse species in resting and stretched conditions combined with dissections and histological analysis of intervertebral joints show that the synovial nature of these joints underlies the variance in SVL measures. Similarly, the ubiquity and variety of viscoelastic tissues connecting mobile snout and jaw elements of alethinophidian snakes underlie variances in length and width measures of the head. For the overall size of the head and jaw apparatus, the part that can be most easily and relatively precisely measured for many snakes is the mandible because it has only one mobile joint. As to accuracy, the anatomy of intervertebral and cranial joints supports the hypothesis that in living snakes, the head and trunk have no exact size.

The heterogeneous micromechanical properties of biological tissues have profound implications across diverse medical and engineering domains. However, identifying full-field heterogeneous elastic properties of soft materials using traditional engineering approaches is fundamentally challenging due to difficulties in estimating local stress fields. Recently, there has been a growing interest in data-driven models for learning full-field mechanical responses, such as displacement and strain, from experimental or synthetic data. However, research studies on inferring full-field elastic properties of materials, a more challenging problem, are scarce, particularly for large deformation, hyperelastic materials. Here, a physics-informed machine learning approach is proposed to identify the elasticity map in nonlinear, large deformation hyperelastic materials. This study reports the prediction accuracies and computational efficiency of physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) in inferring the heterogeneous elasticity maps across materials with structural complexity that closely resemble real tissue microstructure, such as brain, tricuspid valve, and breast cancer tissues. Further, the improved architecture is applied to three hyperelastic constitutive models: Neo-Hookean, Mooney Rivlin, and Gent. The improved network architecture consistently produces accurate estimations of heterogeneous elasticity maps, even when there is up to 10% noise present in the training data.

AIM: To report on a novel digital superimposition workflow that enables measuring the supra-crestal peri-implant soft tissue dimensions all along implant treatment and afterwards. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A preoperative CBCT and intra-oral scans (IOS) are successively taken before surgery, at the end of the healing period, at prosthesis delivery, and over time; they are digitally superposed on a dedicated software. Then, the stereolithography files (STL) of the healing abutment, of the prosthetic abutment and the crown are successively merged into the superposition set of IOSs. RESULT: The workflow protocol of merging successively the STL of each item into the superposition set of IOSs enables capturing the dimensions of the height and width of the supra-crestal soft tissues, at every level of the healing abutment, the prosthetic abutment and the crown. In addition, it allows measuring the vertical distance that the crown exerts pressure on the gingiva and the thickness of the papillae at every level of the abutment. CONCLUSION: This novel digital superimposition workflow provides a straightforward method of measuring the vertical and horizontal dimensions of the supra-crestal peri-implant soft tissues, including the papillae, at each stage of the implant treatment process. It allows investigating a certain number of soft tissue variables that were previously inaccessible to clinical research. It should help enhancing our comprehension of the peri-implant soft tissue dynamics.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study is to evaluate elastography in a wide spectrum of soft tissue superficial lesions by correlating the elastographic characteristics of these lesions with the elastographic score (ES) system established by Asteria. METHODS: Forty patients with different superficial lesions of the soft tissues were studied, including lipomas, schwannomas, neuromas, epidermal inclusion cysts, "in transit" melanoma metastasis, arterio-venous malformation, and giant-cell tumor. An ultrasound examination was performed combined with color-Doppler and elastographic module. The B-mode criteria were echogenicity, margins, and structural homogeneity of the lesion. The color-Doppler criterion was irregular and mainly intra-nodular vascularization. ES 1-4 was attributed, in relation with the increasing tissue stiffness, according to the classification of Asteria adapted for soft tissues. Subsequently, we added to each single B-mode and color-Doppler criterion the ES 3 and 4, thus crossing two parameters of malignancy. All the presumptive diagnoses formulated were confirmed with the clinical data or with the histopathological result. RESULTS: The hypoechoic appearance had the best diagnostic performance. Sensitivity was 87%, specificity 71%, positive predictive value (PPV) 80%, negative predictive value (NPV) 80%, and diagnostic accuracy 80%. There was a good correlation with the clinical and biopsy data, the irregularity of margins the worst performance, the inhomogeneity an intermediate. Color-Doppler had sensitivity 74%, specificity 82%, PPV 85%, NPV 70% and diagnostic accuracy 77.5%. Elastography had sensitivity 87%, specificity 94%, PPV 95%, NPV 84%, and diagnostic accuracy 90%. The combination hypoechoic appearance + ES3/ES4 showed sensitivity 83%, specificity 100%, PPV 100%, NPV 81%,and diagnostic accuracy of 90%. The combination of irregularity of margins + ES3/ES4 showed sensitivity 43%, specificity 100%, PPV 100%, NPV 59%, and diagnostic accuracy of 67.5%. The combination of inhomogeneity of the lesion + ES3/ES4 showed sensitivity 65%, specificity 94%, PPV 94%, NPV 68%, and diagnostic accuracy of 78%. The combination of the color-Doppler with the ES3/ES4 showed sensitivity 69.5%, specificity 100%, PPV 100%, NPV 71%, and diagnostic accuracy of 82.5%.In the combined evaluation, there was a significant increase in specificity, allowing healthy subjects to be categorized as correctly negative, with a reduction in false positives which also translates into an increase in PPV. CONCLUSIONS: Elastography alone is not sufficient for a correct diagnostic classification and must be considered as an additional parameter in the study of soft-tissue lesions. Although there was a good agreement between B-mode malignancy criteria and ES3/ES4, there is no significant improvement in sensitivity. Ultrasound assessment, especially of superficial lesions, cannot be separated from an integrated approach that foresees the additional and routine use of the elastographic examination.

Background Renal cancer metastasis to oral region is very rare. Studies have been published analyzing the cases of metastatic tumors to the oral cavity by many researchers. Very few research studies have been conducted till date to analyze the renal cancer metastasis as the sole primary source to the oral soft tissues. The goal of this study was to examine the published cases of oral soft tissue metastasis from renal cell carcinoma as the only primary source from 1911 to 2022. Materials and Methods An electronic search of the published literature was performed without publication year limitation in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Embase, and Research Gate databases, using mesh keywords like ("Renal cancer," or "Renal carcinoma" or "Renal cell cancer" or "Renal cell carcinoma"), and ("Metastasis" or "Metastases"), and ("Oral soft tissues" or "Tongue" or "Palate" or "Tonsil" or "Buccal mucosa" or "Salivary glands"). We also searched related journals manually and the reference lists. Results Our research revealed a total of 226 relevant articles with 250 patients. Parotid glands and tongue were the most common sites of metastasis. 23% patients died with a survival time of 10 days to 4 years. Conclusions Oral soft tissue metastasis from renal cell carcinoma has a bad prognosis. More cases need to be published in order to raise awareness of these lesions.

Case: We present a case report on the management and outcome of a periprosthetic tibial shaft fracture treated with intramedullary nailing. The patient, a 78-year-old female, presented with a history of having undergone total knee arthroplasty ten years ago due to osteoarthritis. She sustained a periprosthetic fracture of the tibial shaft with compromised soft tissues surrounding the fracture site following a motor vehicle accident. Plain radiographs revealed a displaced tibial shaft fracture with a flipped large spiral wedge fragment located distal to the total knee prosthesis. Due to the poor soft tissue condition and the risk of complications in wound healing, as well as the desire to avoid prolonged bed rest and immobilization, intramedullary nailing was chosen as the primary treatment modality. Despite the challenging circumstances, the patient achieved satisfactory healing and recovered her pre-injury ambulation status with no significant complications at the six-month follow-up. Conclusion: Managing periprosthetic tibial shaft fractures in the presence of compromised soft tissues presents significant challenges for orthopedic surgeons. In this case, intramedullary nailing proved to be a suitable treatment option, minimizing soft tissue trauma and providing stable fixation to facilitate early mobilization and weight bearing.

BACKGROUND: The use of ceramic-coated patient-specific CAD/CAM titanium abutments represents a therapeutic option for the rehabilitation of single tooth. The utilization of highly customized abutments enables the accurate three-dimensional positioning of the prosthetic emergence. This study evaluates the clinical performance of implant-prosthetic rehabilitations carried out using ceramic-coated CAD/CAM titanium abutments. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty implants were placed in thirty patients and rehabilitated with thirty single crowns attached to CAD/CAM titanium abutments. A conventional procedure was applied, with implant placement after post-extraction socket healing and prosthetic restoration after implant healing. Implants of lengths ranging from 6-15 mm and widths of 3.6, 4.2, and 4.8 mm were used in this study. At the time of prosthesis delivery (T0), after two years (T1), and after five years (T2), plaque (PI) and bleeding (BoP) indices, probing depths (PPD), marginal bone levels (MBL), and PES/WES were evaluated for each implant. RESULTS: No patient dropped out of the study during the follow-up period. All thirty implants were clinically successful at five years post-prosthesis delivery (survival rate: 100%) and showed no signs of peri-implant infection. Peri-implant soft tissues were in good health (BoP at T2: 0% in 73% of patients; 25% in 13% of patients; 50% in 10% of patients; and 75% in 3% of patients). The mean PPD was 2.05±0.56 mm at T0, 1.992±0.6 mm at T1, and 1.867±0.439 mm at T2. The mean MBL at T0 was 0.413±0.440 mm, at T1 was 0.306±0.388 mm, and at T2 was 0.263±0.368 mm. The mean PES, WES, and PES/WES indices, 7.43±1.04, 7.57±0.82, and 15.00±1.17, respectively, indicate good integration of soft tissues, satisfactory aesthetics, and an overall positive outcome. CONCLUSIONS: The success rates, maintenance of marginal bone levels, and periodontal and aesthetic indices suggest the validity of implant-prosthetic rehabilitations with CAD/CAM abutments in cases of single crowns.

BACKGROUND: Within the spectrum of melanocytic-differentiated tumors, the challenge faced by pathologists is discerning accurate diagnoses, with clear cell sarcoma of soft tissues standing out as a rare and aggressive neoplasm originating from the neural crest. Accounting for 1% of all soft tissue sarcomas, clear cell sarcoma of soft tissues poses diagnostic complexities, often misidentified owing to its phenotypic resemblance to malignant melanoma. This chapter delves into the intricacies of clear cell sarcoma of soft tissues, its epidemiology, characteristic manifestations, and the imperative need for a comprehensive diagnostic approach involving immunohistochemical and molecular analyses. CASE PRESENTATION: A compelling case unfolds as a 25-year-old male from Morocco, initially misdiagnosed with malignant melanoma, experiences tumor recurrence on the second toe. With no history of trauma or familial neoplasia, the patient's clinical journey is explored, emphasizing the importance of detailed clinical examinations and radiological assessments. The chapter elucidates the histopathological findings, immunohistochemical spectrum, and the correlation between clinical parameters and diagnostic inference, ultimately leading to metatarsal amputation. This clinical vignette highlights the multidimensional diagnostic process in soft tissue neoplasms, emphasizing the synergistic role of clinical, radiological, and histopathological insights. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic challenges inherent in melanocytic-differentiated tumors, exemplified by the rarity of soft tissue clear cell sarcoma, underscore the essential role of an integrated diagnostic approach. This concluding chapter emphasizes the perpetual collaboration required across pathology, clinical medicine, and radiology for nuanced diagnostic precision and tailored therapeutic strategies. The rarity of these soft tissue malignancies necessitates ongoing interdisciplinary engagement, ensuring the optimization of prognosis and treatment modalities through a comprehensive understanding of the diagnostic intricacies presented by clear cell sarcoma of soft tissues.

Accurate postoperative assessment of varying mechanical properties is crucial for customizing patient-specific treatments and optimizing rehabilitation strategies following Achilles tendon (AT) rupture and reconstruction surgery. This study introduces a wireless, chip-less, and immune-tolerant in vivo strain-sensing suture designed to continuously monitor mechanical stiffness variations in the reconstructed AT throughout the healing process. This innovative sensing suture integrates a standard medical suturing thread with a wireless fiber strain-sensing system, which incorporates a fiber strain sensor and a double-layered inductive coil for wireless readout. The winding design of Au nanoparticle-based fiber electrodes and a hollow core contribute to the fiber strain sensor's high sensitivity (factor of 6.2 and 15.1 pF for revised sensitivity), negligible hysteresis, and durability over 10,000 stretching cycles. To ensure biocompatibility and immune tolerance during extended in vivo periods, an antibiofouling lubricant layer was applied to the sensing suture. Using this sensing system, we successfully monitored the strain responses of the reconstructed AT in an in vivo porcine model. This facilitated the postoperative assessment of mechanical stiffness variations through a well-established analytical model during the healing period.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the role of high-resolution ultrasound (HR-US) in the initial and differential diagnosis of the Odontogenic Cutaneous Sinus Tract (OCST) in a multicentric setting. METHODS: Skin HR-US examinations of OCSTs performed between January 2019 and June 2023 at different Institutions were retrospectively reviewed. Epidemiological and clinical data (age, gender, location of the skin lesion, causative tooth, and the clinical suspicion) as well as HR-US imaging findings (morphology and length of the sinus tract, Doppler signal, and cortical bone interruption of maxilla or mandible) were collected. US examinations were performed by expert radiologists using a high-performance US scanner, employing a high-frequency linear probe (15 MHz or higher frequencies). In only one patient the HR-US exam was integrated with strain elastography (SE). RESULTS: Sixteen patients were enrolled with a median age of 37.6 years (range 16-70 years). The most frequent clinical suspicion was epidermal cyst, while OCST was suspected in only two cases. In all cases, HR-US depicted the sinus tract as a nodular, triangular or "champignon-shaped" lesion in the subcutaneous layer, which continued with a slightly tortuous band structure, up to the focally interrupted cortical bone plate. Furthermore, color Doppler evaluation showed color signals around and/or within the lesion, expression of inflammation. On SE, the sinus tract showed a hard pattern, due to fibrous and granulomatous tissue. CONCLUSIONS: HR-US, thanks to its high spatial resolution, allows the evaluation of OCST, and play a crucial diagnostic role, mainly when the clinical suspicious is different.

Background Breast cancer is one of the most lethal neoplasms causing death. Oral cavity is the rare site of distant metastasis from breast cancer. Very little research has been conducted to date to analyze breast cancer as the sole primary source of metastasis to the oral soft tissues. The goal of this study was to examine the published cases of oral soft tissue metastasis from breast cancer as the only primary source to date. Methods An electronic search of the published literature was performed without publication year limitation in PubMed/Medline, Scopus, Google Scholar, Web of Science, Science Direct, Embase, and Research Gate databases, using mesh keywords like ("Breast cancer", OR "Breast carcinoma") AND ("Metastasis" OR "Metastases"), And ("Oral soft tissues" OR "Tongue" OR "Palate" OR "Tonsil" OR "Buccal mucosa" OR "Floor of mouth" OR "Vestibule" OR "Salivary glands"). We also searched all related journals manually. The reference list of all articles was also checked. Results Our research revealed 88 relevant papers (September 1967-September 2023) with 96 patients in total. The most predominant oral soft tissues involved were salivary glands followed by the gingiva, tonsils, tongue, and buccal mucosa. A total of 23% of patients died with an average survival time of 1 to 15 months. Conclusions Oral soft tissue metastasis from breast cancer is a rare event and has a bad prognosis. More cases need to be published to raise awareness of these lesions.

This paper examines the impact of delayed diagnosis and treatment on the prognosis of patients with leiomyosarcomas (LMS). We present a case study highlighting the consequences of neglected LMS, focusing on vascular involvement and metastatic potential. Our findings underscore the importance of early detection and intervention in improving patient outcomes. Additionally, we discuss the challenges associated with diagnosing rare skin LMS and the implications of limited access to medical screening. Through a comprehensive analysis of the literature, we elucidate the critical role of routine surveillance in detecting these malignancies at an earlier stage, thus facilitating timely intervention and potentially curative treatment. This study underscores the urgency of raising awareness among both healthcare providers and the general population about the significance of early detection and prompt management in mitigating the adverse outcomes associated with neglected LMS.

Introduction: Soft tissue sarcomas (STS) are low-incidence tumors whose clinical and histopathological factors are associated with adverse oncological outcomes. This study evaluated prognostic factors (PF) associated with tumor recurrence and overall survival (OS) in patients diagnosed with STS of the extremities, treated at the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología (INC), Bogotá, Colombia. Materials and Methods: An analytical observational study of a historical cohort was carried out, including patients diagnosed with STS and managed surgically in the Functional Unit for Breast and Soft Tissue Tumors of the INC from January 2008 to December 2018. Results: A total of 227 patients were included; 74.5% had tumors greater than 5 cm. Most patients (29.1%) were in stage IIIB at diagnosis. Age was associated with higher mortality (HR = 1.01; CI95%: 1-1.02; p = 0.048). Tumor persistence at admission to the INC (HR = 2.34; CI95%: 1.25-4.35; p = 0.007) and histologic grade III (HR = 5.36; CI95%: 2.29-12.56; p = <0.001) showed statistical significance in the multivariate analysis for recurrence of any type, as did the PFs associated with a higher risk of local recurrence (HR = 2.85; CI95%: 1.23-6.57; p = 0.014 and HR = 6.09; CI95%: 2.03-18.2; p = 0.001), respectively. Tumor size (HR = 1.03; CI95%: 1-1.06; p = 0.015) and histologic grade III (HR = 4.53; CI95%: 1.42-14.49; p = 0.011) were associated with a higher risk of distant recurrence. Conclusions: This cohort showed that in addition to histologic grade and tumor size, tumor persistence at the time of admission has an impact on disease recurrence, so STS should be managed by a multidisciplinary team with experience in this pathology in high-volume reference centers.

Background: In recent years, the use of conometric systems to connect dental implant abutments and prosthetic caps has been advocated because they seem to eliminate the side effects reported when using screw- and cement-connected prosthetic restorations. Objectives: The present case study is focused on conometric connection characterization and its performance in terms of the microarchitecture of peri-implant soft tissues by using a cross-linked approach based on optical microscopy and three-dimensional imaging. Methods: Two dental implants were characterized using micro-CT and another identical one was implanted into a patient; the latter was retrieved 45 days later due to changes in prosthetic needs. Afterward, the peri-implant soft tissues were investigated using synchrotron-based phase contrast imaging, histology, and polarized light microscopy. Results: Micro-CT analysis showed perfect adhesion between the abutment and prosthetic cap; histology and polarized light microscopy showed that connective tissue was richly present around the abutment retrieved from the patient. Moreover, the quantitative evaluation of connective tissues using synchrotron imaging, supported by artificial intelligence, revealed that this tissue was rich in mature collagen, with longitudinal and transverse collagen bundles intertwined. The number and connectivity of transverse bundles were consistently greater than those of the longitudinal bundles. Conclusion: It was found that the peri-implant soft tissue was already mature and well organized after only 45 days of implantation, supporting the hypothesis that conometric connections contribute to the significant stabilization of peri-implant soft tissues.

In various medical fields, a change of soft tissue stiffness is associated with its physio-pathological evolution. While elastography is extensively employed to assess soft tissue stiffness in vivo, its application requires a complex and expensive technology. The aim of this study is to determine whether an easy-to-use method based on impact analysis can be employed to determine the concentration of agar-based soft tissue mimicking phantoms. Impact analysis was performed on soft tissue mimicking phantoms made of agar gel with a mass concentration ranging from 1% to 5%. An indicator Δt is derived from the temporal variation of the impact force signal between the hammer and a small beam in contact with the sample. The results show a non-linear decrease of Δt as a function of the agar concentration (and thus of the sample stiffness). The value of Δt provides an estimation of the agar concentration with an error of 0.11%. This sensitivity of the impact analysis based method to the agar concentration is of the same order of magnitude than results obtained with elastography techniques. This study opens new paths towards the development of impact analysis for a fast, easy and relatively inexpensive clinical evaluation of soft tissue elastic properties.

BACKGROUND: Facial soft tissue analysis is becoming increasingly emphasized in orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. While traditional cephalometry primarily focuses on hard tissues, recent non-invasive imaging techniques offer the potential to comprehensively evaluate three-dimensional (3D) facial soft tissues. The aim of the study was to establish the geometrical 3D and cephalometric divergence between Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) derived images and scanned soft tissues. Crucial for enhancing orthodontic diagnosis, minimizing patient exposure to ionizing radiation and providing facial cephalometric parameters. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2020 to May 2023. CBCT and 3D facial scans were obtained simultaneously using a specialized imaging system. Reproducible landmark points were selected for both cephalometric and soft tissue analysis. Angular and linear measurements were recorded, and correlations between CT and facial scans were statistically assessed. RESULTS: Comparisons between 10 CBCT-derived and 10 facial scan-based soft tissue representations resulted into 1.8mm mean root median square (RMS). Angular measurements, such as ANB, right gonial angle, and left gonial angle, exhibited a 0.9° of difference with their respective soft tissue variables. In contrast, linear measurements of total anterior facial height showed a lower correlation coefficient, equal to 0.51. The correlation between soft tissues and underlying hard tissues was more pronounced for gonial angles. CONCLUSION: Facial soft tissue analysis using either 3D facial scans or CBCT-derived offers similar results for orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. These findings support the use of non-invasive diagnostic tools in orthodontics, although further investigations are needed to comprehensively understand the complexity of hard and soft tissue relationships.

The extraction of wisdom teeth with mandibular impact frequently results in complications including damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) and malformations of the bone. The objective of this research endeavour was to assess the efficacy of low-level laser therapy and concentrated growth factor (CGF) in facilitating nerve recovery and wound healing in such instances. A total of thirty-one patients (mean age 27.52 ± 5.79 years) who presented with IAN injury after extraction were randomly assigned to one of three groups: control group (which received oral mecobalamin), CGF group (which received CGF gel applied to the extraction sockets) and laser group (which received low-level lasers (808 nm, 30 mW, 10 J/cm2 )) at the extraction site. Patients' recovery from IAN paresthesia was evaluated seven times over the course of 14 days utilizing visual analogue scale (VAS) and the pinprick test (PP). At multiple intervals following surgery, periodontal probing and bone level measurements were utilized to assess the recovery of both soft and hard tissues. The findings revealed that, compared with the control group, both the CGF and laser treatment groups exhibited a markedly greater improvement in VAS scores and wound healing of soft tissues, as well as in PP results (p < 0.001), indicating enhanced wound healing processes. Despite these improvements, there was no significant difference in wound healing outcomes between the CGF and laser groups. Notably, the CGF group showed a statistically significant improvement in healing bone defects at 30 and 90 days post-treatment compared with the control group (p = 0.003 and p = 0.004, respectively), underscoring its effectiveness in bone healing as a critical aspect of the overall wound healing process. However, in terms of other wound healing comparisons, no significant differences were observed. CGF and laser therapy significantly enhanced the healing of wounds, including soft tissue and bone recovery, in addition to accelerating the recovery of IAN injuries following mandibular wisdom tooth extraction. Although both treatments were equally effective in nerve recovery, CGF notably excelled in promoting bone healing, suggesting its pivotal role in comprehensive wound healing. This highlights that both CGF and laser therapy are viable options for not only nerve recovery but also for overall wound healing in such dental procedures.

Advancements in systems for prevention and management of pressure ulcers require a more detailed understanding of the complex response of soft tissues to compressive loads. This study aimed at quantifying the progressive deformation of the buttock based on 3D measurements of soft tissue displacements from MR scans of 10 healthy subjects in a semi-recumbent position. Measurements were obtained using digital volume correlation (DVC) and released as a public dataset. A first parametric optimisation of the global registration step aimed at aligning skeletal elements showed acceptable values of Dice coefficient (around 80%). A second parametric optimisation on the deformable registration method showed errors of 0.99mm and 1.78mm against two simulated fields with magnitude 7.30±3.15mm and 19.37±9.58mm, respectively, generated with a finite element model of the buttock under sitting loads. Measurements allowed the quantification of the slide of the gluteus maximus away from the ischial tuberosity (IT, average 13.74 mm) that was only qualitatively identified in the literature, highlighting the importance of the ischial bursa in allowing sliding. Spatial evolution of the maximus shear strain on a path from the IT to the seating interface showed a peak of compression in the fat, close to the interface with the muscle. Obtained peak values were above the proposed damage threshold in the literature. Results in the study showed the complexity of the deformation of the soft tissues in the buttock and the need for further investigations aimed at isolating factors such as tissue geometry, duration and extent of load, sitting posture and tissue properties.
