RESUMEN

The Transport and Transformation of Ammonia (TRANS2Am) airborne field campaign occurred over northeastern Colorado during the summers of 2021 and 2022. A subset of the TRANS2Am flights investigated easterly wind conditions capable of moving agricultural emissions of ammonia (NH3) through urban areas and into the Rocky Mountains. TRANS2Am captured 6 of these events, unveiling important commonalities. (1) NH3 enhancements are present over the mountains on summer afternoons when easterly winds are present in the foothills region. (2) The abundance of gas-phase NH3 is 1 and 2 orders of magnitude higher than particle-phase NH4+ over the mountains and major agricultural sources, respectively. (3) During thermally driven circulation periods, emissions from animal husbandry sources closer to the mountains likely contribute more to the NH3 observed over the mountains than sources located further east. (4) Transport of plumes from major animal husbandry sources in northeastern Colorado westward across the foothills requires ∼5 h. (5) Winds drive variability in the transport of NH3 into nearby mountain ecosystems, producing both direct plume transport and recirculation. A similar campaign in other seasons, including spring and autumn, when synoptic scale events can produce sustained upslope transport, would place these results in context.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to examine the association between antipsychotic drug use and hepatobiliary health based on serum markers and ultrasound observations on a sample of patients with schizophrenia compared to age and gender matched healthy controls. METHODS: The 120 patients with schizophrenia and 60 control subjects had their blood drawn to measure liver function tests and underwent hepatobiliary ultrasonography to determine hepatobiliary lesions. Liver function tests included total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST). Standardized cross-sectional images of the liver and kidneys were obtained from patients and controls, and analyses were stratified by length of taking psychotropic medication among those with schizophrenia. Liver echo attenuation coefficients, liver-kidney ratios, and liver fat content were determined. RESULTS: Psychotropic drug use was associated with greater liver burden and liver lesions in patients with schizophrenia compared to controls. The levels of TC, TG, ALT and AST in patients with schizophrenia were also all significantly higher among patients with schizophrenia. Long-term psychotropic medication was associated with increased levels of fatty liver in patients compared with controls. Levels of TC, TG, ALT and AST were all significantly higher in the long-term psychotropic medication use group than in the short-term group. Liver echo attenuation coefficient, liver-kidney ratio, and liver fat content were also higher in the long-term medication use group compared to the short-term group. CONCLUSION: Antipsychotic drug use, particularly long-term use, is associated with increased liver burden in patients with schizophrenia, impaired lipid metabolism, increased liver lesions and fat content.

PURPOSE: To track body size and proportions, arm dimensions and grip strength in children, adolescents, and adults resident in an indigenous community in Oaxaca who were measured on two or three occasions across surveys in 1968, 1978, and 2000. METHODS: The three cross-sectional surveys included measures of height, weight, sitting height, arm circumference, triceps skinfold, and grip strength in surveys of schoolchildren in 1968 and of schoolchildren, adolescents and adults in 1978 and 2000. Cross-checks of surnames, forenames and ages/dates of birth of participants in the three surveys identified three samples of individuals measured on two occasions (1968-1978, two age groups in 1978-2000) and a subsample of individuals measured in the three surveys. Partial correlations controlling for age at each observation were calculated for each variable in the three sex-specific samples measured on two occasions, and for the subsamples of males and females measured on three occasions. RESULTS: Allowing for variation in age among subsamples, inter-age correlations were moderate to high for stature, moderate for sitting height and estimated leg length, and low to moderate for weight, BMI, arm and estimated arm muscle circumference, triceps skinfold, and grip strength. CONCLUSION: Allowing for the relatively broad chronological age intervals, the inter-age correlations for height, weight and BMI were at the low end, while those for grip strength and for strength per unit body weight for males (though not females) were generally in the range of correlations noted in studies of European samples. Likely associated with improved health, nutritional, and sanitation conditions, obesity and overweight were emerging among adults by 2000. Obesity and overweight in adults paralleled the introduction of mechanized agriculture that reduced routine physical work. Among children, the association of obesity and overweight is likely with increased nutritional availability, but poor choices in diet.

BACKGROUND: The efficacy of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines in preventing SARS-CoV-2 infection in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is not clear. METHODS: From January 2022 to October 2022, patients diagnosed with HCC in a prospective, multicenter, observational cohort were analyzed. RESULTS: One hundred and forty-one patients with (n = 107) or without COVID-19 vaccination (n = 34) were included. The number of patients with severe or very severe infection was relatively lower in the vaccinated group (3.7% vs. 11.8%, p = 0.096). Median infection-free survival in the vaccinated group (14.0 vs. 8.3 months, p = 0.010) was significantly longer than that in the unvaccinated group. COVID-19 vaccination (hazard ratio (HR) HR = 0.47), European Cooperative Oncology Group performance score = 0 (HR = 2.06), and extrahepatic spread (HR = 0.28) were found to be the independent predictive factors for infection-free survival. CONCLUSION: COVID-19 vaccines could effectively reduce the SARS-Cov-2 infection in patients with HCC.

Cloud products from geostationary satellites are the main alternative to surface synoptic cloud observations (SYNOP), and have become the baseline products for the development and construction of the Quality Management System (QMS) of integrated meteorological observation in China. This study addresses the needs of the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) for such an operational reform, and it is carried out using real-time observations obtained from the Fengyun-2E (FY-2E) geostationary satellite in 2012 to derive cloud total amount and classification using two different methods. Compared to surface SYNOP observations, the cloud total amount estimated by FY-2E is generally significantly lower (about 30% lower on average). The cloud classification resulting from the two methods used in this study is also significantly different from the classification obtained from surface observations (difference between 22 and 32%). The difference is smaller for the classification method, which uses additional auxiliary temperature profiles.

AIMS: Timely identification of neurological deterioration in patients with spinal disorders, through spinal motor assessment, is paramount in achieving early intervention to reduce the risk of permanent deficits. This project was initiated to meet the requirement for safe, timely spinal motor assessment through establishing and addressing clinician's educational needs. DESIGN: Mixed methods study conducted through online survey and concurrent focus groups June 2022-April 2023. METHODS: Pre-intervention online survey and focus groups identified insufficient provision of education targeted at identifying changes in motor function and as a result, clinicians lacked confidence and competence in completing assessments and caring for patients with spinal disorders. An e-learning package was created and shared widely along with additional interventions to support assessment completion. To establish the success of the project a post-intervention online survey was distributed. RESULTS: Survey respondents reported that the e-learning package has influenced their practice to either some extent or to a great extent with 91% reporting increased confidence in completing a spinal motor assessment. Post-intervention results also demonstrated an increase in confidence in caring for spinal surgery patients. CONCLUSION: Through engaging with clinicians to establish and address educational needs, this quality improvement project has successfully increased competence and confidence in this area of spinal care. IMPLICATIONS FOR THE PROFESSION AND/OR PATIENT CARE: This study highlights the importance of targeted education to ensure that clinicians are appropriately skilled to identify neurological deterioration and demonstrates the effectiveness of digital education in providing this. IMPACT: This study addressed concerns around timely identification of deterioration of spinal patients. Study findings were the success in utilizing digital education to increase clinician's confidence and competence and thus enhance patient safety. This research will have an impact on clinical areas caring for patients with spinal disorders. REPORTING METHOD: SQUIRE guidelines. PATIENT OR PUBLIC CONTRIBUTION: No patient or public contribution.

We conducted an experiment of planting a dead cow and a metal-framed cage with cameras on the 1629 m deep sea floor off the southeast coast of Hainan Island in the northwestern South China Sea, using ROV diving and setting up a video camera on the cage to observe animals who came to eat the bait. The deep-sea cameras captured footage of eight Pacific sleeper sharks (Somniosus pacificus) swimming and feeding around the dead cow. To our knowledge, this is the first time the occurrence of such a shark species has been reported in the South China Sea. Eight individuals were differentiated based on the characteristic differences displayed in the images, with lengths of 1.9 to 5.1 m estimated. The video camera also recorded the predators' behavior of tearing at the dead cow on the seabed. It was discovered that Pacific sleeper sharks are not strictly solitary and exhibit queue-feeding behavior. This study is significant as it documents a record of a data-scarce shark species, for which little information is available in the literature. It also documents an expansion of the species' known habitat from the north Pacific Ocean into the South China Sea. Such sharks diving into the deep sea to predate on dead animals also suggests that occurrences of large chunks of dead organic bodies falling onto the deep sea might have been more frequent than we previously thought in the South China Sea. The findings have implications for understanding the geographic connectivity of large swimming animals between the South China Sea and the Pacific Ocean and provide scientific evidence for formulating conservation and management strategies for sharks and other large animals in the oceans.

Many citizen scientists are highly motivated to help address the current extinction crisis. Their work is making valuable contributions to protecting species by raising awareness, identifying species occurrences, assessing population trends, and informing direct management actions, such as captive breeding. However, clear guidance is lacking about how to use existing citizen science data sets and how to design effective citizen science programs that directly inform extinction risk assessments and resulting conservation actions based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. This may be because of a mismatch between what citizen science can deliver to address extinction risk and the reality of what is needed to inform threatened species listing based on IUCN criteria. To overcome this problem, we examined each IUCN Red List criterion (A-E) relative to the five major types of citizen science outputs relevant to IUCN assessments (occurrence data, presence-absence observations, structured surveys, physical samples, and narratives) to recommend which outputs are most suited to use when applying the IUCN extinction risk assessment process. We explored real-world examples of citizen science projects on amphibians and fungi that have delivered valuable data and knowledge for IUCN assessments. We found that although occurrence data are routinely used in the assessment process, simply adding more observations of occurrence from citizen science information may not be as valuable as inclusion of more nuanced data types, such as presence-absence data or information on threats from structured surveys. We then explored the characteristics of citizen science projects that have already delivered valuable data to support assessments. These projects were led by recognized experts who champion and validate citizen science data, thereby giving greater confidence in its accuracy. We urge increased recognition of the value of citizen science data within the assessment process.


Integración de la ciencia ciudadana a las evaluaciones de la Lista Roja de la UICN Resumen Existe mucha motivación entre los ciudadanos científicos para ayudar a enfrentar la actual crisis de extinción. Sus contribuciones son valiosas para la protección de las especies mediante la concientización, la detección de especies, la evaluación de las tendencias poblacionales y la información sobre acciones directas de gestión, como la cría en cautiverio. Sin embargo, faltan directrices claras sobre cómo utilizar los conjuntos de datos de ciencia ciudadana existentes y cómo diseñar programas de ciencia ciudadana eficaces que informen directamente las evaluaciones del riesgo de extinción y las acciones de conservación resultantes basadas en los criterios de la Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza (UICN). HXI on ASO-S and STIX onboard Solar Orbiter are the first simultaneously operating solar hard X-ray imaging spectrometers. ASO-S's low Earth orbit and Solar Orbiter's periodic displacement from the Sun-Earth line enables multi-viewpoint solar hard X-ray spectroscopic imaging analysis for the first time. Here, we demonstrate the potential of this new capability by reporting the first results of 3D triangulation of hard X-ray sources in the SOL2023-12-31T21:55 X5 flare. HXI and STIX observed the flare near the east limb with an observer separation angle of 18°. We triangulated the brightest regions within each source, which enabled us to characterise the large-scale hard X-ray geometry of the flare. The footpoints were found to be in the chromosphere within uncertainty, as expected, while the thermal looptop source was centred at an altitude of 15.1 ± 1 Mm. Given the footpoint separation, this implies a more elongated magnetic-loop structure than predicted by a semi-circular model. These results show the strong diagnostic power of joint HXI and STIX observations for understanding the 3D geometry of solar flares. We conclude by discussing the next steps required to fully exploit their potential.

Estuaries are among the most sensitive systems to climate change. Previous studies have suggested that the Sado Estuary (Portugal) has decreasing trends for water temperature, which is uncommon in a global warming scenario. However, no long-term analysis regarding water column conditions has been conducted on this estuary to date. Therefore, the main aim of this study is to understand if and how the properties of this estuary have changed, considering a 34-year trend analysis and an assessment of their main drivers. Water temperature significantly decreased (up to 0.04 °C/year) along with chlorophyll a. Salinity increased and nutrients displayed an overall decrease. These trends were potentially driven by higher influence of upwelled water combined with a reduction of the river flow. Sado appears to have a lower vulnerability to climate change than other estuaries as it does not show a high sensitivity to changes in its water column physicochemical properties.

BACKGROUND: The global discourse on future health care emphasises that learning to collaborate across professions is crucial to assure patient safety and meet the changing demands of health care. The research on interprofessional education (IPE) is diverse but with gaps in curricula design and how IPE is enacted in practice. PURPOSE AND AIMS: This research project will identify. 1) how IPE in clinical placements emerges, evolves, and is enacted by students when embedded in local health care practices, 2) factors critical for the design of IPE for students at clinical placements across the four countries. METHODS: A study involving four countries (Sweden, Norway, Australia and New Zealand) using the theory of practice architectures will be undertaken between 2023 and 2027. The project is designed as an international, collaborative multiple-case ethnographic study, using the theoretical framework of practice architectures (TPA). It will include four ethnographic case studies of IPE, one in each country. Data will be collected in the following sequence: (1) participant observation of students during interprofessional placements, (2) interviews with students at clinical placement and stakeholders/professionals, (3) Non-clinical documents may be used to support the analysis, and collection of photos may be use as memory aids for documenting context. An analysis of "sayings, doings and relatings" will address features of the cultural- discursive, material-economic, social-political elements making up the three key dimensions of TPA. Each of the four international cases will be analysed separately. A cross case analysis will be undertaken to establish common learning and critical IPE design elements across the four collaborating universities. DISCUSSION: The use of TPA framework and methodology in the analysis of data will make it possible to identify comparable dimensions across the four research sites, enabling core questions to be addressed critical for the design of IPE. The ethnographic field studies will generate detailed descriptions that take account of country-specific cultural and practice contexts. The study will also generate new knowledge as to how IPE can be collaboratively researched.

Many local agencies in the United States and other countries are tasked to install air pollution monitoring systems of highly accurate sensors that have high acquisition, operating, and maintenance costs. The need for expanded coverage of air quality measurements across Salt Lake County (SLCO), Utah is being met by mounting air quality and temperature sensors on an expanding fleet of battery electric buses (BEBs). Monitoring air quality from a mobile sensor network provides real-time insights into air pollution patterns at high temporal and spatial resolution. Mobile measurements contribute to assessing residents' exposure to air pollution, facilitating the implementation of cost-effective public health policies and highlighting disparities. The Electric Bus Air Quality Observation Project was launched in SLCO during July 2021 and has collected millions of observations to date. A BEB traveling at typical traffic speeds (~10 m s-1) can provide multiple measurements along city block lengths of up to ~200 m. With careful analysis that factors in the time response of the differing sensors, variability from block-to-block may be attributed to fine-scale factors (e.g., pollution and heat sources, tree shading and urban vegetation, etc.). Preliminary findings showcase the value of increased coverage and resolution. During an extreme heat event in July 2023, both the morning and afternoon temperature readings showed differences of over 6.5 °C (12 °F), primarily as an east-west gradient with similar gradients in ozone. We conclude that temperature and pollutant concentration readings, at fine spatial and temporal resolutions, will facilitate future health studies and equitable policy and mitigation strategies. Our study demonstrates that our partnerships established with governmental, non-profit, and transit agencies facilitate the successful transfer of research and development to operational real-time mobile air quality monitoring.

This study analyzes H2O and HDO vertical profiles in the Venus mesosphere using Venus Express/Solar Occultation in the InfraRed data. The findings show increasing H2O and HDO volume mixing ratios with altitude, with the D/H ratio rising significantly from 0.025 at ~70 km to 0.24 at ~108 km. This indicates an increase from 162 to 1,519 times the Earth's ratio within 40 km. The study explores two hypotheses for these results: isotopic fractionation from photolysis of H2O over HDO or from phase change processes. The latter, involving condensation and evaporation of sulfuric acid aerosols, as suggested by previous authors [X. Zhang et al., Nat. Geosci. 3, 834-837 (2010)], aligns more closely with the rapid changes observed. Vertical transport computations for H2O, HDO, and aerosols show water vapor downwelling and aerosols upwelling. We propose a mechanism where aerosols form in the lower mesosphere due to temperatures below the water condensation threshold, leading to deuterium-enriched aerosols. These aerosols ascend, evaporate at higher temperatures, and release more HDO than H2O, which are then transported downward. Moreover, this cycle may explain the SO2 increase in the upper mesosphere observed above 80 km. The study highlights two crucial implications. First, altitude variation is critical to determining the Venus deuterium and hydrogen reservoirs. Second, the altitude-dependent increase of the D/H ratio affects H and D escape rates. The photolysis of H2O and HDO at higher altitudes releases more D, influencing long-term D/H evolution. These findings suggest that evolutionary models should incorporate altitude-dependent processes for accurate D/H fractionation predictions.

Favourable outcomes with CPX-351 versus conventional 7 + 3 were demonstrated in the pivotal phase III trial in adults aged 60-75 years with newly diagnosed, highrisk/secondary acute myeloid leukaemia (AML). As a complement to the clinical trial and to address important data gaps, the CPX-351 Real-World Effectiveness and SafeTy (CREST-UK; NCT05169307) study evaluated the use of CPX-351 in routine clinical practice in the UK, in 147 patients with newly diagnosed therapy-related AML or AML with myelodysplasia-related changes. Best response of complete remission or complete remission with incomplete platelet or neutrophil recovery was achieved by 53% of evaluable patients. Kaplan-Meier median overall survival (OS) was 12.8 months (95% confidence interval 9.2-15.3). Fifty (34%) patients proceeded to haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT); median OS landmarked from the HCT date was not reached. There were no new safety concerns with CPX-351 identified in CREST-UK. Patients treated with CPX-351 in the outpatient setting spent an average of 24.4, 16.7, 28.2, and 27.7 fewer days on the ward compared with inpatients during first induction, second induction, first consolidation, and second consolidation, respectively. The results from CREST-UK provide valuable insights into the effectiveness, safety, and outpatient delivery of CPX-351 in routine clinical practice in the UK.

BACKGROUND: The 'FAST-forward', study published in April 2020, demonstrated the effectiveness of an extremely hypofractionated radiotherapy schedule, delivering the total radiation dose in five sessions over the course of 1 week. We share our department's experience regarding patients treated with this regimen in real-world clinical settings, detailing outcomes related to short-term toxicity and efficacy. METHODS: A descriptive observational study was conducted on 160 patients diagnosed with breast cancer. Between July 2020 and December 2021, patients underwent conservative surgery followed by a regimen of 26 Gy administered in five daily fractions. RESULTS: The median age was 64 years (range: 43-83), with 82 patients (51.3%) treated for left-sided breast cancer, 77 patients (48.1%) for right-sided breast cancer, and 1 instance (0.6%) of bilateral breast cancer. Of these, 66 patients had pT1c (41.3%), 70.6% were infiltrative ductal carcinomas, and 11.3% were ductal carcinoma in situ. Most tumours exhibited intermediate grade (41.9%), were hormone receptor positive (81.3%), had low Ki-67 (Ki-67 < 20%; 51.9%) and were Her 2 negative (85%). The majority of surgical margins were negative (99.4%). Among the patients, 72.5% received hormonotherapy, and 23.8% received chemotherapy. Additionally, 26 patients (16.3%) received an additional tumour boost following whole breast irradiation (WHBI) of 10 Gy administered in five sessions of 2 Gy over a week. The median planning target volume (PTV) was 899 cm3 (range: 110-2509 cm3). Early toxicity was primarily grade I radiodermatitis, affecting 117 patients (73.1%). During a median follow-up of 15 months (range: 3.9-28.77), only one patient experienced a local relapse, which required mastectomy. CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of this highly hypofractionated regimen in early-stage breast cancer appears feasible and demonstrates minimal early toxicity. However, a more extended follow-up duration would be required to evaluate long-term toxicity and efficacy accurately.

Background: Zoos use environmental enrichments, including scents, which may have applications to improve breeding success for taxa, such as lemurs, which rely heavily on olfactory communication. We aimed to develop novel, biologically-relevant scent enrichments to trigger mating behaviours of zoo-housed lemur species, which are critically endangered in the wild and show a low success rate in captive breeding programmes. Methods: We examined anogenital odour secretions, released by female gentle ( Hapalemur alaotrensis) and ruffed ( Varecia variegata) lemurs, using solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry techniques. We identified the key compounds distinguishing the volatile chemical profile of female lemurs during the breeding season and used them to develop species-specific scent enrichments. We then tested the scent enrichments, made up of synthesized mixtures conveying information about female lemur fertility, on unsuccessful breeding pairs of lemurs hosted in European zoos. We evaluated the effects of the newly designed scent enrichments on their target species by combining behavioural observations with faecal endocrinology. Results: We identified and reproduced fertility-specific signals associated with female scents. These scent mixtures triggered male sexual behaviours, including mating, during and after the enrichment condition. We also found effects on faecal testosterone levels, with increased levels after the enrichment condition albeit not statistically significant. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that biologically-relevant scent enrichments may trigger natural species-specific behaviours, with potential implications for conservation breeding of zoo-based endangered lemur species, and highlight that combining more assessment methods may assist with evaluating the impact of environmental enrichments.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a growing concern for public health. OBJECTIVE: We sought to explore the challenges associated with development and implementation of a complex intervention designed to improve AMS in hospitals. METHODS: We conducted a qualitative evaluation of a complex AMS intervention with educational, behavioral, and technological components in 5 wards of an English hospital. At 2 weeks and 7 weeks after initiating the intervention, we interviewed 25 users of the intervention, including senior and junior prescribers, a senior nurse, a pharmacist, and a microbiologist. Topics discussed included perceived impacts of different elements of the intervention and facilitators and barriers to effective use. Interviews were supplemented by 2 observations of ward rounds to gain insights into AMS practices. Data were audio-recorded, transcribed, and inductively and deductively analyzed thematically using NVivo12. RESULTS: Tracing the adoption and impact of the various components of the intervention was difficult, as it had been introduced into a setting with competing pressures. These particularly affected behavioral and educational components (eg, training, awareness-building activities), which were often delivered ad hoc. We found that the participatory intervention design had addressed typical use cases but had not catered for edge cases that only became visible when the intervention was delivered in real-world settings (eg, variations in prescribing workflows across different specialties and conditions). CONCLUSIONS: Effective user-focused design of complex interventions to promote AMS can support acceptance and use. However, not all requirements and potential barriers to use can be fully anticipated or tested in advance of full implementation in real-world settings.

Pioneering road markings for motorcyclists, designed as Perceptual Rider Information for Maximising Expertise and Enjoyment (PRIMEs) were installed on approach to demanding bends at 22 trial sites and two comparison sites across the West Highlands of Scotland. The markings provided a series of 'gateways' to encourage safer riding. With 32,213 motorcyclists observed, the following statistically significant results were observed: speed reductions at 10 trial sites; positive changes in lateral position at the final PRIME gateway marking at 15 trial sites and positive changes in lateral position at the apex of the bend at 13 trial sites; reductions in braking at nine trial sites; increases use of PRIME road markings across 18 of the 22 trial sites. No statistically significant effects were observed at the comparison sites. These findings are discussed in relation to the 'Road Safety Framework to 2030' and the 'Safe System' approach to reducing motorcycle casualties.


This world-first research presents the largest investigation of rider behaviour involving 32,213 motorcyclists. Pioneering road markings for motorcyclists produced statistically significant positive behavioural changes in speed, lateral lane position and braking. This work identifies important behavioural factors that support the 'Safe System' approach to motorcycle casualty reduction.

Nitrate (NO3-) has been identified as a key component of particulate matter (PM2.5) in China. However, there is still a lack of understanding regarding its sources and how it forms, especially in the context of high-frequency and long-term data. In this study, NO3- levels were observed on an hourly basis over an almost three-year period at an urban site in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region, China, from January 2019 to December 2021. The results reveal an average daily NO3- concentration ranging from 0.08 µg m-3 to 61.69 µg m-3, constituting 11.9 ± 12.5 % of PM2.5. This percentage rose to as high as 57 % during pollution episodes, highlighting NO3-'s significant role in pollution formation. The ammonia-rich environment was found to be the most important factor in promoting NO3- formation. Positive Matrix Factorization (PMF) analysis indicates that the primary sources of NO3- in the PRD region were vehicle emissions (43.8 ± 21.2 %) and coal combustion (39.1 ± 21.5 %), with shipping emissions, sea salt, soil dust and industrial emissions + biomass burning following in importance. Regarding source areas, the primary contributor of vehicle emissions was predominantly from the PRD region, whereas the coal combustion, aside from local contributions, also originates from the northern region. From a long-term perspective, NO3- pollution has remained relatively stable since the summer of 2020. Concurrently, coal combustion source has shown a localization trend. These insights derived from the extensive, high-frequency observation presented in this study serve as a valuable reference for devising strategies to control NO3- and PM2.5 in the PRD region and China.
