RESUMEN

This is the first in a series of three articles looking at school health data collection from identification of data points to utilizing data to share your story and submitting your data to contribute to the National School Health Data Set: Every Student Counts! Many school nurses cringe at the mention of data collection. However, everything we do as school nurses is data driven. Every documented assessment, observation, and conversation provides the school nurse with data. The barriers often noted to participating in formal data collection efforts are time, workload, access to an electronic health record, and not understanding the WHY, WHAT, and HOW. The key to data collection is identifying the data already being collected and starting where you are. Data collection is not something new that you need to find a way to fit into your already busy schedule. WHAT do you currently collect? WHY are you collecting the data you have? HOW do you collect it? WHAT do you do with the data? These are all very important questions, but let's take a closer look at the WHY, WHAT, and HOW behind data collection.

RESUMEN

Rural and minority populations often experience disparities in health care, which can include access to timely and affordable school sports physicals. To address this challenge and encourage an active lifestyle, faculty at a rural campus of the University of Nebraska Medical Center College of Nursing collaborated with local school nurses to initiate an innovative free sports/school physicals program. During the first 3 years of the program, 186 mostly middle and high school students received free physicals. Physicals included a medical history; assessment of students' vision, height, weight, body composition, blood pressure, and glucose level; a physical exam; and referral for follow-up care when appropriate. This article shares results of the program including the concerning findings of the percentage of participating students with overweight/obesity and hypertension. Overall, families have expressed appreciation for the program. Holding the event after school and into the evening enables families with working parents to participate, and providing services without cost relieves the financial burden for those with lower incomes. This collaborative, free sports physicals program demonstrates one approach to improve health care access and equity that can be expanded to other communities.

RESUMEN

The effect on students from the COVID-19 pandemic, violence related to racism, and loss of customary school routines may cause loss of both school connection and a sense of belonging. School nurses can positively influence student belonging and school connection as they encounter students throughout in-person school and virtual school environments. School nurses build connections with students whom they know and outreach to students whom they identify as vulnerable in the areas of belonging and school connectedness. With a mind-set of the Framework for 21st Century School Nursing Practice and in collaboration with a school team implementing a multitiered system of support, school nurses intentionally outreach and cultural sensitivity to grow positive school climate that benefits students.

RESUMEN

Annually, the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) sets advocacy goals. The goals include legislative and policy priorities. The COVID-19 pandemic brought attention to the need to heighten advocacy efforts, specifically to provide for additional school nurses and supplies necessary to meet the challenge of safely returning students to school. While advocating at the national level, NASN also encouraged advocacy at the state and local levels. This article provides a brief summary of NASN's advocacy efforts as well as providing examples from two different state associations demonstrating the importance of collaboration in advocacy efforts in areas related to the pandemic and in general areas related to school nursing.

RESUMEN

The paucity of scientifically rigorous school nursing clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) presents barriers to evidence-based care of students with special health-care needs. A Model for Developing Evidence-Based Clinical Practice Guidelines for School Nursing (School Nursing CPG Model) was developed under the auspices of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) to address this need. To test and validate this School Nursing CPG Model, a trial CPG development project was conducted to (1) identify structure and process gaps and areas for improvement within the School Nursing CPG Model and (2) develop an evidence-based CPG for school nursing practice that addresses a priority student health condition: seizures and epilepsy. The School Nursing CPG Model was validated through a trial CPG project which followed the systematic, standardized process of the School Nursing CPG Model while responsively implementing quality improvement measures through the Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle. Both specific aims were accomplished.

RESUMEN

Asthma imposes tremendous burden on children, families, and society. Successful management requires coordinated care among children, families, health providers, and schools. Building Bridges for Asthma Care Program, a school-centered program to coordinate care for successful asthma management, was developed, implemented, and evaluated. The program consists of five steps: (1) identify students with asthma; (2) assess asthma risk/control; (3) engage the family and student at risk; (4) provide case management and care coordination, including engagement of health-care providers; and (5) prepare for next school year. Implementation occurred in 28 schools from two large urban school districts in Colorado and Connecticut. Significant improvements were noted in the proportions of students with completed School Asthma Care Plans, a quick-relief inhaler at school, Home Asthma Action/Treatment Plans and inhaler technique (p < .01 for all variables). Building Bridges for Asthma Care was successfully implemented extending asthma care to at-risk children with asthma through engagement of schools, health providers, and families.

RESUMEN

Medication errors occur in the school setting as they do in other healthcare settings. In this article, three accounts of school nurse medication errors are presented. School nurses often undergo emotional trauma after a mistake is made. Other fields of healthcare are incorporating the second victim phenomena in their responses to errors, with the patient as the first victim and the caregiver who made the mistake as the second. Researchers have identified six stages of the second victim's journey. School nurses and administrators would benefit from understanding and utilizing this model.

RESUMEN

This is the second of two articles outlining the professional school nurse's role in the special education process for students with disabilities. The Individuals with Disabilities in Education Improvement Act of 2004 mandates the special education process: identification, full and individual evaluation, eligibility determination, and development of the individual education program (IEP), including special education placement. Part 1 focused on the importance of the school nurse's role in student identification, response to intervention, and the full and individual evaluation. Part 2 highlights the school nurse's vital and unique contribution to the subsequent special education steps of eligibility determination, IEP development, and special education services placement and minutes.

RESUMEN

There are many stakeholders for school health data. Each one has a stake in the quality and accuracy of the health data collected and reported in schools. The joint NASN and NASSNC national school nurse data set initiative, Step Up & Be Counted!, heightens the need to assure accurate and precise data. The use of a standardized terminology allows the data on school health care delivered in local schools to be aggregated for use at the local, state, and national levels. The use of uniform terminology demands that data elements be defined and that accurate and reliable data are entered into the database. Barriers to accurate data are misunderstanding of accurate data needs, student caseloads that exceed the national recommendations, lack of electronic student health records, and electronic student health records that do not collect the indicators using the standardized terminology or definitions. The quality of the data that school nurses report and share has an impact at the personal, district, state, and national levels and influences the confidence and quality of the decisions made using that data.

RESUMEN

Step Up & Be Counted! (Step Up!) is a joint project of the National Association of School Nurses (NASN) and the National Association of State School Nurse Consultants (NASSNC). The goal of the initiative is to develop a National School Nurse Standardized Data Set that will be used by nurses across the country to uniformly collect data the same way. The data will be used to determine the health of children and youth, the care that is delivered in schools, and the impact of school nurses on academic success and well-being. This article focuses on the role of the Designated State Data Champion in the initiative.

RESUMEN

Nurses are increasingly being called upon to lead changes within health care. How do nurses and, in particular, school nurses become leaders? School nurses lead daily in their work but often do not recognize themselves as leaders. The "Five C's of Leadership"-character, commitment, connectedness, compassion, and confidence-identified by Kowalski and Yoder-Wise are foundational to the development of leadership and are particularly relevant to school nurses and their role. Two additional attributes found in the literature-courage and capacity-also undergird school nursing practice. In this article, we describe how school nurses already embody these leadership qualities. Each leadership attribute is reviewed in light of the literature, followed by specific examples to demonstrate how school nurses provide leadership. Through these illustrations, school nurses can recognize and embrace their present leadership abilities. In addition, by using the "Seven C's" of leadership, school nurses can enhance their inherent leadership abilities.
