Seventy-five samples were collected from 15 beehives in the central highlands of Ecuador (Tungurahua-Chimborazo) to assess Africanization in managed bee populations using wing geometric morphometric and mitochondrial DNA analyses. The results indicated that when grouping the apiaries based on altitudinal floors into 2600-2800, 2801-3000, and 3001-3274 m above sea level, differences (p < 0.001) were observed. The morphotypes were similar in the first two floors, but the third indicated that altitude plays a crucial role in the differentiation of populations. When comparing with the pure subspecies, we found differences (p < 0.001); the nearest Mahalanobis distance was for Apis mellifera scutellata (D2 = 3.51), with 95.8% Africanization via father in the area. The maternal origin of all patterns belonged to lineage A (A. m. scutellata), with seven haplotypes. The most frequent haplotypes were A26 and A1; however, the A1q haplotype was not detected at the national level or in nearby countries. The identified haplotypes do not coincide with A4, which is predominant in South Africa and Brazil. The results indicate a double origin due to their presence in North Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. The formation of specific morphological groups within ecoregions is suggested.

PREMISE: Bracken (Pteridium, Dennstaedtiaceae) is a cosmopolitan genus of aggressive disturbance colonizers that are toxic to agricultural livestock. The taxonomy of Pteridium has been treated in multiple schemes, ranging from one to six species worldwide, with numerous subspecies and varieties. Recent work has focused on the worldwide distribution and systematics of the bracken fern, but South America has been poorly represented. We present the first continent-wide sampling and analysis of Pteridium esculentum, a Southern Hemisphere diploid species. METHODS: Within South America, P. esculentum has several morphotypes, distinguished into subspecies by variation in indument and lamina architecture. We used double digest restriction site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADSeq) to assess the phylogenetic relationships of P. esculentum subspecies. RESULTS: We found a striking genetic homogeneity in the species, being able to support only two morphotypes from molecular data: P. e. arachnoideum and P. e. campestre. We had high confidence for shallow and deep phylogenetic relationships, but less support for relationships among crown groups. CONCLUSIONS: We describe an east-west geographic pattern that would explain the relationships between populations; and, in contrast to previous studies, we detected differences with P. esculentum from Australia. These results will lay the foundations for studying variations in this species' behavior as a weed, as well as its impact on the production of agricultural livestock in South America.

BACKGROUND: Key functions of Ca2+ signaling in rodent microglia include monitoring the brain state as well as the surrounding neuronal activity and sensing the danger or damage in their vicinity. Microglial Ca2+ dyshomeostasis is a disease hallmark in many mouse models of neurological disorders but the Ca2+ signal properties of human microglia remain unknown. METHODS: We developed a novel genetically-encoded ratiometric Ca2+ indicator, targeting microglial cells in the freshly resected human tissue, organotypically cultured tissue slices and analyzed in situ ongoing Ca2+ signaling of decades-old microglia dwelling in their native microenvironment. RESULTS: The data revealed marked compartmentalization of Ca2+ signals, with signal properties differing across the compartments and resident morphotypes. The basal Ca2+ levels were low in ramified and high in ameboid microglia. The fraction of cells with ongoing Ca2+ signaling, the fraction and the amplitude of process Ca2+ signals and the duration of somatic Ca2+ signals decreased when moving from ramified via hypertrophic to ameboid microglia. In contrast, the size of active compartments, the fraction and amplitude of somatic Ca2+ signals and the duration of process Ca2+ signals increased along this pathway.

This study discusses the micro-level structural details of Cichorieae pollen sources elucidated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and explains their symmetry and morphometry. The in-depth knowledge from the electron ultrastructure of Asteraceae pollen has provided insights into enhanced pollen morphology, and the antimicrobial significance of species under study presents novel avenues for their natural defense mechanisms in the development of antimicrobial agents. In this research, both quantitative and qualitative features of pollen were examined. The pollen grains are prolate-spheroidal and oblate-spheroidal in shape, characterized by a maximum polar diameter of 55.6-61.0 µm and a maximum equatorial distance of 68.3-74.4 µm. SEM reveals various configurations such as echinate perforate-tectate, psilate, and echino-lophate perforate. The Cichorieae species have significant antimicrobial efficacy and are promising sources for the development of novel antimicrobial drugs with potential implications in pharmaceutical and healthcare industries. SEM analysis of Cichorieae pollens has provided remarkable insights into their unique structures, revealing diverse shapes and surface ornamentations, which can be used for accurate Asteraceae species identification. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: SEM provides unique pollen surface structures and patterns of Chicory pollen grains. Chemical composition of Chicory botanical sources provides valuable information on their potential as antimicrobial agents. SEM imaging reveals specialized fenestrate grain structures of taxonomic importance.

Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab) infection can be deadly in patients with chronic lung diseases like cystic fibrosis (CF). In vitro and in vivo, Mab may adopt a smooth (S) or rough (R) morphotype, the latter linked to more severe disease conditions. In vitro studies revealed differences in pathogenicity and immune response to S and R morphotypes. We propose that in vivo both morphotypes exist and may transiently switch depending on the environment, having important pathogenic and immunologic consequences. This can be modeled by morphotypic S and R variants of Mab selected based on in vitro growth conditions. Here, we report the first analysis of early transcriptional events in mouse bone marrow derived macrophages (BMDMs) upon infection with media-selected interchangeable Mab-S and Mab-R morphotypes. The early transcriptional events after infection with both morphotypes showed considerable overlap of the pro-inflammatory genes that were differentially regulated compared to the uninfected macrophages. We also observed signature genes significantly differentially regulated in macrophages during infection of media-selected morphotypic Mab-S and Mab-R variants. In conclusion, media-selected Mab-S and Mab-R behave in a similar fashion to stable S and R types with respect to pathogenesis and immune response, serving as a useful model for environmentally influenced morphotype selection.

Abies pindrow, commonly known as the West-Himalayan Fir, holds great ecological importance as a native tree species in the Himalayas. Beyond its value as a fuel and timber source, it serves as a keystone species within the ecosystem. However, over recent years, extensive degradation and deforestation have afflicted A. pindrow forests. Utilizing ectomycorrhizal fungal symbionts of A. pindrow could prove pivotal in restoring these deteriorated forests. This study aimed to evaluate the diversity and composition of the ectomycorrhizal fungal community associated with A. pindrow. We employed ectomycorrhizal root tip morphotyping, sporocarp sampling, and Illumina MiSeq metabarcoding of the ITS region of fungal nrDNA. The ectomycorrhizal root tips were categorized into 10 morphotypes based on their morphological characteristics, exhibiting an average colonization rate of 74%. Sporocarp sampling revealed 22 species across 10 genera, with Russula being the most prevalent. The metabarcoding yielded 285,148 raw sequences, identifying 326 operational taxonomic units (OTUs) belonging to 193 genera, 114 families, 45 orders, 22 classes, and 6 divisions. Of these, 36 OTUs across 20 genera were ectomycorrhizal, constituting 63.1% of the fungal community. Notably, Tuber was the most abundant, representing 37.42% of the fungal population, followed by Russula at 21.06%. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of mycorrhizal symbionts of A. pindrow. The findings hold significant implications for utilizing dominant ectomycorrhizal fungi in reforestation endeavors aimed at restoring this important Himalayan conifer.

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic impacts on freshwater habitats are causing a recent biodiversity decline far greater than that documented for most terrestrial ecosystems. However, knowledge and description of freshwater biodiversity is still limited, especially targeting all size classes to uncover the distribution of biodiversity between different trophic levels. We assessed the biodiversity of the Lower Rhine and associated water bodies in the river's flood plain including the river's main channel, oxbows and gravel-pit lakes, spanning from the level of protists up to the level of larger invertebrate predators and herbivores organized in size classes (nano-, micro, meio- and macrofauna). Morphological diversity was determined by morphotypes, while the molecular diversity (amplicon sequencing variants, ASVs) was assessed through eDNA samples with metabarcoding targeting the V9 region of the 18S rDNA. RESULTS: Considering all four investigated size classes, the percentage of shared taxa between both approaches eDNA (ASVs with 80-100% sequence similarity to reference sequences) and morphology (morphotypes), was always below 15% (5.4 ± 3.9%). Even with a more stringent filtering of ASVs (98-100% similarity), the overlap of taxa could only reach up to 43% (18.3 ± 12%). We observed low taxonomic resolution of reference sequences from freshwater organisms in public databases for all size classes, especially for nano-, micro-, and meiofauna, furthermore lacking metainformation if species occur in freshwater, marine or terrestrial ecosystems. CONCLUSIONS: In our study, we provide a combination of morphotype detection and metabarcoding that particularly reveals the diversity in the smaller size classes and furthermore highlights the lack of genetic resources in reference databases for this diversity. Especially for protists (nano- and microfauna), a combination of molecular and morphological approaches is needed to gain the highest possible community resolution. The assessment of freshwater biodiversity needs to account for its sub-structuring in different ecological size classes and across compartments in order to reveal the ecological dimension of diversity and its distribution.

Achillea millefolium L., commonly known as yarrow, is a versatile and widely distributed plant species with a rich history of ethnopharmacological significance. This study aimed to evaluate the comparative differences of A. millefolium inflorescence morphotypes. The phytochemical profile of white and pink inflorescence morphotypes was characterised by a complex of thirty-four phenolic and triterpene compounds. The species has distinct morphotypes of white and pink inflorescence. Phenolic and triterpenic profiles were determined, and individual compounds were quantified in inflorescence, leaf, and stem samples of two morphotypes tested. The antioxidant activity of plant extracts was evaluated by free radical scavenging (ABTS) and ferric-reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) assays. Caffeoylquinic acids predominated in all parts of the plant tested. Chlorogenic acid and 3,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid were the principal compounds in the phenolic profile. Betulin, betulinic acid, and α-amyrin were the prevailing triterpenic components in the triterpenic profiles of Achillea millefolium morphotypes. The predominant flavonoids in inflorescences were flavones, while in leaves, flavonols were the organ-specific compounds. The quantitative differences were observed between plant parts of morphotypes. Leaves consistently displayed the highest amounts of identified compounds and have been testified as the main source of antioxidant activity. Overall, white inflorescences accumulated a higher total amount of compounds compared to pink ones. The observed differences between morphotypes derived from the same population reflect the differences in specialised metabolites and their chemotypes. This study addresses gaps in knowledge, particularly in phenolic and triterpenic profiling of coloured inflorescence morphotypes, enhancing our understanding of chemotypes and morphotypes within the species.

In recent years, advances in analyses of the sperm morphology and genetics of Perumytilus purpuratus have allowed to two evolutionary scenarios for this mussel to be suggested: (1) the scenario of cryptic species and (2) the scenario of incipient or in progress speciation. For a better understanding of the evolutionary history of P. purpuratus, we performed extensive sampling along a latitudinal gradient of ca. 7180 km of coastline-from the Southern Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean-and we delved deeper into the sperm morphology of P. purpuratus, exploring its association with the phylogeny and population genetics to determine whether the variability in sperm traits between the northern and southern regions was a signal of cryptic or incipient species. Overall, our results showed that sperm sizes were strongly correlated with the genetic structure in males of P. purpuratus. We identified at 37° S on the Pacific coast a coincident break of both sperm size and genetic disruption that can be explained by historical events and postglacial recolonization as causal phenomena for the observed divergences. Furthermore, evidence of genetic admixture between lineages was found at 38° S, suggesting the presence of an introgressive hybridization zone and incomplete reproductive isolation in an in fraganti or incipient speciation process.

Microbial evolution within polymicrobial communities is a complex process. Here, we report within-species diversification within multispecies microbial communities during experimental evolution with the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. We describe morphological diversity in the target species Chryseobacterium gleum, which developed a novel colony morphotype in a small number of replicate communities. Alternate morphotypes coexisted with original morphotypes in communities, as well as in single-species experiments using evolved isolates. We found that the original and alternate morphotypes differed in motility and in spatial expansion in the presence of C. elegans. This study provides insight into the emergence and maintenance of intraspecies diversity in the context of microbial communities.

In the present study, the northwest coast of India, bordering the Arabian Sea, was selected to evaluate the microplastic (MP) abundance. This is the first study to emphasize the effects of different seasons on MP distribution. The collected MPs were dried, segregated, and evaluated based on their morphotype, size, color, and polymer type. A total of 1756.6, 7326.6, and 202 particles/kg of sand were estimated in the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively, with a dominance of polypropylene (PP) type of plastic in the pre-monsoon and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. HDPE and PP collected MPs during the monsoon season were further characterized for associated contaminants. Metal absorbance was detected using SEM-EDX mapping and ICP-MS. The presence of organic compounds (OCs) was analyzed using GC-MS. MPs exhibit distinct associations with metals, among which the HDPE pellet morphotype exhibits a higher range of metal adsorption. Total 61 different OCs were associated with MPs. The HDPE pellets contained the highest amounts of hydrophobic organic compounds. PP pellets were found to contain triglycerides, fatty aldehydes, and alkaloids, along with HOCs. Among morphotypes, pellet forms of MPs were found to adsorb more contaminants. These co-contaminants infiltrate the study area through sewage runoff and shoreline debris deposition, subsequently interacting with MPs. Furthermore, the MP diversity was studied by employing the MP diversity integrated index, which suggests that most of the MP diversity was observed in the pre-monsoon period. The pollution load index employed an MP risk assessment, which presented a low degree of MP contamination. In contrast, the polymer hazard index was calculated as 21650.3 in post-monsoon, placing the area under the extreme danger category. It is evident from the data that the types of MP is more important than their number. Thus, MP morphotypes have importance in the adsorption of co-contaminants.

Fungicides reduce the risk of mycopathologies and reduce the content of mycotoxins in commercial grain. The effect of fungicides on the structural and functional status of the root system of grain crops has not been studied enough. In this regard, we studied the phytocytotoxic effects tebuconazole (TEB) and epoxiconazole (EPO) and azoxystrobin (AZO) in the roots of Triticum aestivum seedlings in hydroponic culture. In the presence of EPO and AZO (but not TEB) inhibition of the root growth was accompanied by a dose-dependent increase in the content of malondialdehyde, carbonylated proteins, and proline in roots. TEB was characterized by a dose-dependent decrease in the total amount of border cells (BCs) and the protein content in root extracellular trap (RET). For EPO and AZO, the dose curves of changes in the total number of BCs were bell-shaped. AZO did not affect the protein content in RET. The protein content in RET significantly decreased by 3 times for an EPO concentration of 1 µg/mL. The obtained results reveal that the BC-RET system is one of the functional targets of fungicides in the root system of wheat seedlings. Studied fungicides induce oxidative stress and structural and functional alterations in the BC-RET system that can affect their toxicity to the root system of crops.

Mycobacterium abscessus is a non-tuberculous mycobacterium, causing lung infections in cystic fibrosis patients. During pulmonary infection, M. abscessus switches from smooth (Mabs-S) to rough (Mabs-R) morphotypes, the latter being hyper-virulent. Previously, we isolated the lsr2 gene as differentially expressed during S-to-R transition. lsr2 encodes a pleiotropic transcription factor that falls under the superfamily of nucleoid-associated proteins. Here, we used two functional genomic methods, RNA-seq and chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing (ChIP-seq), to elucidate the molecular role of Lsr2 in the pathobiology of M. abscessus. Transcriptomic analysis shows that Lsr2 differentially regulates gene expression across both morphotypes, most of which are involved in several key cellular processes of M. abscessus, including host adaptation and antibiotic resistance. These results were confirmed through quantitative real-time PCR, as well as by minimum inhibitory concentration tests and infection tests on macrophages in the presence of antibiotics. ChIP-seq analysis revealed that Lsr2 extensively binds the M. abscessus genome at AT-rich sequences and appears to form long domains that participate in the repression of its target genes. Unexpectedly, the genomic distribution of Lsr2 revealed no distinctions between Mabs-S and Mabs-R, implying more intricate mechanisms at play for achieving target selectivity.IMPORTANCELsr2 is a crucial transcription factor and chromosome organizer involved in intracellular growth and virulence in the smooth and rough morphotypes of Mycobacterium abscessus. Using RNA-seq and chromatin immunoprecipitation-sequencing (ChIP-seq), we investigated the molecular role of Lsr2 in gene expression regulation along with its distribution on M. abscessus genome. Our study demonstrates the pleiotropic regulatory role of Lsr2, regulating the expression of many genes coordinating essential cellular and molecular processes in both morphotypes. In addition, we have elucidated the role of Lsr2 in antibiotic resistance both in vitro and in vivo, where lsr2 mutant strains display heightened sensitivity to antibiotics. Through ChIP-seq, we reported the widespread distribution of Lsr2 on M. abscessus genome, revealing a direct repressive effect due to its extensive binding on promoters or coding sequences of its targets. This study unveils the significant regulatory role of Lsr2, intricately intertwined with its function in shaping the organization of the M. abscessus genome.

Burkholderia pseudomallei is intrinsically resistant to many antibiotics. This study aimed to assess bacterial colony morphotypes and the validity of using disk diffusion method (DD) to determine antibiotic resistance in Malaysian clinical B. pseudomallei isolates for ceftazidime (CAZ), meropenem (MEM), amoxicillin-clavulanate (AMC) and doxycycline (DOX). DD produced good categorical agreements exhibiting concordance of 100% with reference method, broth microdilution for CAZ and DOX, 98.6% for MEM and 97.2% for AMC. Smooth-centred colonies were most frequently observed. EUCAST DD interpretative criterion is suitable to interpret B. pseudomallei CAZ, MEM, AMC and DOX resistance. Increasing AMC MIC in B. pseudomallei is a concern.

PURPOSE: The "normal" cervical spine may be non-lordotic shapes and the cervical spine alignment targets are less well established. So, the study was to propose novel classification for cervical spine morphologies with Chinese asymptomatic subjects, and to address cervical balance status based on the classification. METHOD: An overall 632 asymptomatic individuals on cervical spine were selected from January 2020 to December 2022, with six age groups from 20-30 year to 70 plus group. Cervical alignment contained C2-7 cervical lordosis (C2-7 CL) and T1 slope (T1S), together with C1-2 CL, C2-4 CL, C5-7 CL, C2S, cervical sagittal vertical axis (CSVA), thoracic inlet angle (TIA) and neck tilt (NT). C2-7 cervical lordosis was regarded as primary outcomes. To identify groups with similar cervical alignment parameters, a 2-step cluster analysis was performed. RESULTS: C2-7 CL, T1S, CSVA, TIA and NT increased by age and mean value of them were larger in male than female group. Four unique clusters of female lordotic cluster, female kyphotic cluster, male lordotic cluster and male kyphotic cluster were classified mainly based on gender and C2-C7 CL. T1S was the independent influencing factor for C2-7 CL in all individuals and C2-7 CL = -28.65 + 0.57 × TIA, which varied from clusters. Although interactions among cervical parameters, it showed the alignment was more coordinated in lordotic groups. CONCLUSIONS: The cervical sagittal profile varied with age and gender. Four clusters were naturally classified based on C2-7 CL and gender. The cervical balance status was addressed by C2-7 CL = - 28.65 + 0.57 × TIA.

An important feature of ruminal ciliates is their phenotypic plasticity, which makes their identification difficult. The common manifestation of the phenotypic plasticity in rumen ciliates is a change in their cell size and caudal spination. We analyzed various morphotypes of Epidinium with five caudal processes (spines) taken from the rumen of European bison (Bison bonasus). In the study, the cluster analysis and K-means analysis of morphometric data could not distinguish very similar morphotypes of Epidinium with five caudal processes. However, the morphotype of E. parvicaudatum prevailed (70%). The DNA of four individual E. parvicaudatum was isolated successfully from formaldehyde-preserved samples. The partial 18S rDNA gene sequences (about 350-400 bp) were identical to Epidinium sequences in GenBank (E. caudatum, a one-spine morphotype, and E. cattanei, a five-spine morphotype). It can be assumed that these short sequences cannot distinguish the differences between the Epidinium morphospecies. Complete gene sequences from various hosts and various molecular markers are necessary to reveal the validity of the Epidinium five-spine species. In conclusion, classical morphology should be supplemented with molecular data when more morphotypes of the rumen ciliate species are present in samples.

Saprolegnia parasitica Coker, 1923 is a primary fish pathogen and one of the most common water molds in freshwater ecosystems. In our study, nineteen strains of S. parasitica were isolated, identified, and characterized using morphological and genetic markers. On the basis of the abundance of zoosporangia, gemmae, the formation of gemma chains, and the induction of zoospore release, three morphotypes were differentiated. A species-level molecular identification of isolates was performed using the ITS 1 and 2 regions. A total of six genotypes were distinguished based on partial DNA sequences of the genes RNA polymerase II subunit B (RPB2) and serine hydroxymethyltransferase (SHMT). In five settings of in vitro culture conditions differing in the mineral content and the temperature of water and in the presence of a host or bait, we found that the addition of fish skin extract boosted the formation of asexual reproductive and persistent vegetative structures in cultures, whereas an unfavorable environment did not support the formation of these structures in vitro.

PURPOSE: Bluegill sunfish (Lepomis macrochirus) are a North American sport fish that exhibit two different male morphotypes. Alpha-males are large, colorful, territorial, and have significant parental investment, while ß-males are small, drab, and have two reproductive phenotypes, neither of which involves parental investment. Due to the two different reproductive strategies, the level of interaction between congenerics varies, which may impact parasites that are spread via close contact, such as Monogenoidea that infect the gills. Monogeneans are ectoparasites on the gills and skin of fish hosts that may cause significant pathology in high numbers and be an indicator of host behavior and interaction between hosts. METHODS: In this study, 328 L. macrochirus (106 α-males, 92 ß-males, and 130 females) were necropsied from 8 lakes and ponds in northwestern Virginia to identify and enumerate monogenean parasites from the gills. RESULTS: Alpha-males had a significantly greater parasite abundance and species richness compared to ß-males. This may be due to the increased size and surface area of gills in α-males, increased interaction with females during mating, and stationary behavior when guarding nests, which enhanced the chances of α-males contracting the parasites. This also led to significant differences in the monogenean communities infecting the two morphotypes, which were also significantly influenced by the size of the hosts. CONCLUSIONS: It is important in future studies regarding parasitism that behavioral morphotypes within a sex, such as α-male and ß-male L. macrochirus in this study, be treated separately as behavioral and morphometric differences between them can potentially lead to differences in parasitism.

The morphological and molecular identification of Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes in the Black Sea remains unresolved and incomplete. The aim of current study was to provide a detailed morphological identification with rDNA whole ITS (ITS‒1, 5.8S subunit, ITS‒2) and mtDNA cox2 sequences data of Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes infecting four commonly edible marine fish species, including European anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus (L.), horse mackerel, Trachurus trachurus (L.), whiting, Merlangius merlangus (L.), and red mullet, Mullus barbatus ponticus (E.) in the Black Sea (FAO fishing area 37.4.2). Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes were morphologically classified, followed by whole ITS and cox2 sequencing. Four Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes, III, IV, VIII, and IX, are described based on morphological and molecular data. The present study provides the first study reporting whole ITS and cox2 sequences for Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes III, IV, VIII and III, IV, VIII, IX, respectively, in the Black Sea. Here, we offer a foundation for future research on the distribution, morphologic and molecular identification of Hysterothylacium larval morphotypes infecting edible some marine fish in the Black Sea.

Damming has been reported to give many short-term benefits for local people but also to result in long-term negative impacts on the aquatic ecosystem. The ecological impact of the Ba Lai dam was studied by investigating environmental differences and the response of associated aquatic nematode communities (structure and morphometric characteristics) in both downstream and upstream sections of its estuary in comparison to an adjacent dam-free estuary Ham Luong, both belonging to the Mekong delta in Vietnam. Depleted dissolved oxygen, elevated methane and sulfide concentrations and increased accumulation of contaminants, including total suspended solid, heavy metals, and nutrients in the dammed estuary and its upstream section, indicated an impact of the dam on the environment. The dammed estuary showed differences in the nematode communities inhabiting the subtidal sediments from the reference estuary such as a higher nematode individual biomass with smaller length/width ratio as a consequence of the larger body width. The absence of long/thin nematodes in the dammed estuary, but high abundance of a slender nematode morphotype, a group with a higher efficiency of obtaining dissolved oxygen as a consequence of their comparatively large surface/volume ratio, might represent an adaptation of those communities to live in poor oxygen condition. In the dammed estuary, the small L/W ratio of nematode communities was potentially driven by the interaction effects of enrichment of both total suspended solid and ammonium linked to dissolved oxygen depletion. These findings support the potential use of nematode communities as bioindicators in ecological quality assessment although plausible; it is not possible to ascertain if only the dam causes the changes in the nematode communities.
