BACKGROUND: Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS) has brought significant physical, psychological and economic burdens on the patients and their families due to its early onset, diagnostic and therapeutic challenges and increased recurrence risk. AIM: To explore the current research status and emerging hotspots of PJS. METHODS: Studies on PJS published during 1994-2023 were gathered based on Web of Science Core Collection. Additionally, a case of PJS-induced intestinal intussusception, successfully treated with endoscopic methods despite three laparotomies, was highlighted. Comprehensive bibliometric and visual analysis were conducted with VOSviewer, R and CiteSpace. RESULTS: Altogether 1760 studies were identified, indicating a steady increase in the publication number. The United States had the highest influence, whereas the University of Helsinki emerged as the leading institution, and Aaltonen LA from the University of Helsinki was the most prolific author. Cancer Research, Oncogene and Endoscopy were the top three journals based on H-index. Keyword burst direction analysis revealed that "cancer risk", "management", "surveillance" and "familial pancreatic cancer" were the potential hotspots for investigation. Additionally, "early detection", "capsule endoscopy", "clinical management", "double-balloon endoscopy", "familial pancreatic cancer" and "molecular genetic basis" were identified as the key clusters of co-cited references. Endoscopic polypectomy remained effective on resolving intestinal intussusception in patients who underwent three previous laparotomies. CONCLUSION: In the last three decades, global publications related to PJS show a steadily increasing trend in number. Endoscopic management is currently a research hotspot.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the effects and molecular mechanisms of inhibition of the Ras homolog gene (Rho)/Rho-associated coiled-coil forming protein kinase (ROCK) pathway on the proliferation and migration of airway smooth muscle cells involving myocardin (MYOCD). METHODS: Human airway smooth muscle cells were infected with the adenoviral vector Ad-ZsGreen-shRNA-hROCK1 in vitro. The cells were randomly divided into four groups: ROCK1 gene silencing control (shNC) group, shNC + arachidonic acid (AA, Rho/ROCK pathway activator) group, ROCK1 gene silencing (shROCK1) group, and shROCK1 + AA group (n=3 each). Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blot were used to detect the expression levels of ROCK1 and MYOCD mRNA and protein. ELISA was employed to measure the levels of globular actin and filamentous actin, while immunofluorescent staining and scratch assays were utilized to assess cell proliferation and migration. RESULTS: Compared to the shNC + AA group, the shROCK1 + AA group exhibited decreased levels of ROCK1 and MYOCD mRNA and protein expression, reduced expression levels of globular actin and filamentous actin, and diminished cell proliferation and migration capabilities (P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Inhibition of the Rho/ROCK pathway suppresses the proliferation and migration of airway smooth muscle cells, which may be associated with the downregulation of MYOCD.

Magnetic induction hyperthermia (MIH), is a technique that has developed rapidly in recent years in the field of tumor thermotherapy. It implants a magnetic heating medium (millimeter-sized heat seeds, micron-sized magnetic particles and nanometer-sized magnetic fluids, etc.) inside the tumor. The material heats up under the induction of an external alternating magnetic field (100-500 kHz), which causes a high temperature zone to rapidly form in the local biological tissues and induces apoptosis in tumor cells. Magnetic induction hyperthermia has the advantages of high safety, strong targeting, repeatable treatment, and the size of the incision during treatment is negligible compared to surgical resection, and is currently used in clinical treatment. However, the millimeter-scale heat seed heating that is typically used in treatments can result in uneven temperatures within the tissue. Common MIH heating devices are bulky and complex in design, and are not easy for medical staff to get their hands on, which are issues that limit the diffusion of MIH. In this view, this paper will discuss the basic theoretical research on MIH and the progress of MIH-related technologies, with a focus on the latest research and development results and research hotspots of nanoscale ferromagnetic media and magnetic heat therapy devices, as well as the validation results and therapeutic efficacy of the new MIH technology on animal experiments and clinical trials. In this paper, it is found that induction heating using magnetic nanoparticles improves the uniformity of the temperature field, and the magneto-thermal properties of nanoscale ferromagnetic materials are significantly improved. The heating device was miniaturized to simplify the operation steps, while the focusing of the magnetic field was locally enhanced. However, there are fewer studies on the biotoxicity aspects of nanomedicines, and the localized alternating magnetic field uniformity used for heating and the safety of the alternating magnetic field after irradiation of the human body have not been sufficiently discussed. Ultimately, the purpose of this paper is to advance research related to magnetic induction thermotherapy that can be applied in clinical treatment.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of Sophora japonica extract on alveolar bone mass in ovariectomized osteoporosis mice. METHODS: Six-week-old female non-pregnant wild-type C57BL/6J mice were randomly divided into sham operation group, ovariectomy(OVX) group and OVX+Sophora japonica extract group. Ovaries of the mice in the OVX group and the OVX+Sophora japonica extract group were removed, and the mice in the OVX+Sophora japonica extract group were treated by Sophora japonica extract at a dose of 150 mg/kg, three times a week for 4 weeks; while mice of the other two groups were given an equal volume of normal saline at the same time. Body weight was measured 3 times a week, and the micro-parameters of alveolar bone were detected by Micro-CT after 4 weeks. The data were analyzed by GraphPad Prism 9 software. RESULTS: Compared with the sham-operated group, the trabecular bone parameters of the alveolar bone in the OVX group were significantly decreased 1 month after operation (P<0.05). One month after intervention with Sophora japonica extract, alveolar bone mineral density (BMD), trabecular number (Tb.N) and trabecular separation(Tb.Sp) in OVX mice was significantly rescued, with no significant difference compared to the sham surgery group(P>0.05); but bone volume fraction(BV/TV) and trabecular thickness (Tb.Th) had not completely recovered to the levels of the sham-operated group(P<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Sophora japonica extract can effectively increase the alveolar bone mass reduced by estrogen deficiency and may be used as one of the potential drugs for the treatment of menopausal alveolar bone osteoporosis.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to investigate the function of novel circular RNA hsa_circ_0036683 (circ-36683) in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). METHODS: RNA sequencing was used to screen out differentially expressed miRNAs. Expression levels of miR-4664-3p and circ-36683 were evaluated in lung carcinoma cells and tissues by quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). The effects of miR-4664-3p and circ-36683 on proliferation and migration were assessed using cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), wound healing and transwell migration assays and xenograft experiments. The targeting relationship of circ-36683/miR-4664-3p/CDK2AP2 was assessed by luciferase reporter assays, western blot, qRT-PCR and argonaute2-RNA immunoprecipitation (AGO2 RIP). Co-immunoprecipitation (Co-IP), 5-ethynyl-2'-deoxyuridine (EdU) staining and CCK-8 were used to validate the indispensable role of CDK2AP2 in suppressing cell proliferation as a result of CDK2AP1 overexpression. RESULTS: By RNA sequencing, miR-4664-3p was screened out as an abnormally elevated miRNA in NSCLC tissues. Transfection of miR-4664-3p could promote cell proliferation, migration and xenograft tumor growth. As a target of miR-4664-3p, CDK2AP2 expression was downregulated by miR-4664-3p transfection and CDK2AP2 overexpression could abolish the proliferation promotion resulting from miR-4664-3p elevation. Circ-36683, derived from back splicing of ABHD2 pre-mRNA, was attenuated in NSCLC tissue and identified as a sponge of miR-4664-3p. The functional study revealed that circ-36683 overexpression suppressed cell proliferation, migration and resulted in G0/G1 phase arrest. More importantly, the antioncogenic function of circ-36683 was largely dependent on the miR-4664-3p/CDK2AP2 axis, through which circ-36683 could upregulate the expression of p53/p21/p27 and downregulate the expression of CDK2/cyclin E1. CONCLUSION: The present study revealed the antioncogenic role of circ-36683 in suppressing cell proliferation and migration and highlighted that targeting the circ-36683/miR-4664-3p/CDK2AP2 axis is a promising strategy for the intervention of NSCLC.

The design of highly active catalysts is a main theme in organic chemistry, but it still relies heavily on expert experience. Herein, powered by machine-learning global structure exploration, we forge a Metal-Phosphine Catalyst Database (MPCD) with a meticulously designed ligand replacement energy metric, a key descriptor to describe the metal-ligand interactions. It pushes the rational design of organometallic catalysts to a quantitative era, where a ±10 kJ mol-1 window of relative ligand binding strength, a so-called active ligand space (ALS), is identified for highly effective catalyst screening. We highlight the chemistry interpretability and effectiveness of ALS for various C-N, C-C and C-S cross-coupling reactions via a Sabatier-principle-based volcano plot and demonstrate its predictive power in discovering low-cost ligands in catalyzing Suzuki cross-coupling involving aryl chloride. The advent of the MPCD provides a data-driven new route for speeding up organometallic catalysis and other applications.

Introduction: We previously reported that ATP1A3 c.823G>C (p.Ala275Pro) mutant causes varying phenotypes of alternative hemiplegia of childhood and rapid-onset dystonia-parkinsonism in the same family. This study aims to investigate the function of ATP1A3 c.823G>C (p.Ala275Pro) mutant at the cellular and zebrafish models. Methods: ATP1A3 wild-type and mutant Hela cell lines were constructed, and ATP1A3 mRNA expression, ATP1A3 protein expression and localization, and Na+-K+-ATPase activity in each group of cells were detected. Additionally, we also constructed zebrafish models with ATP1A3 wild-type overexpression (WT) and p.Ala275Pro mutant overexpression (MUT). Subsequently, we detected the mRNA expression of dopamine signaling pathway-associated genes, Parkinson's disease-associated genes, and apoptosisassociated genes in each group of zebrafish, and observed the growth, development, and movement behavior of zebrafish. Results: Cells carrying the p.Ala275Pro mutation exhibited lower levels of ATP1A3 mRNA, reduced ATP1A3 protein expression, and decreased Na+-K+-ATPase activity compared to wild-type cells. Immunofluorescence analysis revealed that ATP1A3 was primarily localized in the cytoplasm, but there was no significant difference in ATP1A3 protein localization before and after the mutation. In the zebrafish model, both WT and MUT groups showed lower brain and body length, dopamine neuron fluorescence intensity, escape ability, swimming distance, and average swimming speed compared to the control group. Moreover, overexpression of both wild-type and mutant ATP1A3 led to abnormal mRNA expression of genes associated with the dopamine signaling pathway and Parkinson's disease in zebrafish, and significantly upregulated transcription levels of bad and caspase-3 in the apoptosis signaling pathway, while reducing the transcriptional level of bcl-2 and the bcl-2/bax ratio. Conclusion: This study reveals that the p.Ala275Pro mutant decreases ATP1A3 protein expression and Na+/K+-ATPase activity. Abnormal expression of either wild-type or mutant ATP1A3 genes impairs growth, development, and movement behavior in zebrafish.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN) is one of the most common complications of diabetes. Our previous study showed that CD38 knockout (CD38KO) mice had protective effects on many diseases. However, the roles and mechanisms of CD38 in DN remain unknown. Here, DN mice were generated by HFD feeding plus streptozotocin (STZ) injection in male CD38KO and CD38flox mice. Mesangial cells (SV40 MES 13 cells) were used to mimic the injury of DN with palmitic acid (PA) treatment in vitro. Our results showed that CD38 expression was significantly increased in kidney of diabetic CD38flox mice and SV40 MES 13 cells treated with PA. CD38KO mice were significantly resistant to diabetes-induced renal injury. Moreover, CD38 deficiency markedly decreased HFD/STZ-induced lipid accumulation, fibrosis and oxidative stress in kidney tissue. In contrast, overexpression of CD38 aggravated PA-induced lipid accumulation and oxidative stress. CD38 deficiency increased expression of SIRT3, while overexpression of CD38 decreased its expression. More importantly, 3-TYP, an inhibitor of SIRT3, significantly enhanced PA-induced lipid accumulation and oxidative stress in CD38 overexpressing cell lines. In conclusion, our results demonstrated that CD38 deficiency prevented DN by inhibiting lipid accumulation and oxidative stress through activation of the SIRT3 pathway.

ß-Branched chiral amines with contiguous stereocenters are valuable building blocks for preparing various biologically active molecules. However, their asymmetric synthesis remains challenging. Herein, we report a highly diastereo- and enantioselective biocatalytic approach for preparing a broad range of ß-branched chiral amines starting from their corresponding racemic ketones. This involves a dynamic kinetic resolution-asymmetric reductive amination process catalyzed using only an imine reductase. Four rounds of protein engineering endowed wild-type PocIRED with higher reactivity, better stereoselectivity, and a broader substrate scope. Using the engineered enzyme, various chiral amine products were synthesized with up to >99.9% ee, >99:1 dr, and >99% conversion. The practicability of the developed biocatalytic method was confirmed by producing a key intermediate of tofacitinib in 74% yield, >99.9% ee, and 98:2 dr at a challenging substrate loading of 110 g L-1. Our study provides a highly capable imine reductase and a protocol for developing an efficient biocatalytic dynamic kinetic resolution-asymmetric reductive amination reaction system.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare the gender differences in isolated mitral regurgitation (MR) repair. METHODS: Of 381 adults aged 54.8 ± 12.3 years undergoing mitral valve repair (MVP) for isolated MR from January 2019 to December 2022, the baseline and operative data, and outcomes were compared between 161 women (42.3%) and 220 men (57.7%). RESULTS: Women tended to be nonsmokers (98.1 vs. 45%, p < 0.001), and have more cerebrovascular accidents (38.5% vs. 24.1%, p = 0.004) and isolated annular dilatation (19.3 vs. 9.1%, p = 0.010), lower creatinine (70.0 ± 19.5 vs. 86.3 ± 19.9 µmol/dL, p < 0.001), and smaller left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD; 54.4 ± 6.7 vs. 57.8 ± 6.6 mm, p < 0.001). One female died of stroke at 2 days (0.3%). Another female (0.3%) underwent mitral valve replacement for failed repair. Stroke occurred in 4 (1.0%). Two underwent reexploration for bleeding (0.5%). Women were more likely to have less 24-hour drainage (290 ± 143 vs. 385 ± 196 mL, p < 0.001). Over a mean follow-up of 2.1 ± 1.1 years (100% complete), 1 woman died and 1 man underwent a reoperation; 28 had moderate MR, and 9 had severe MR. Neither did early and late mortality and reoperation, nor freedom from late moderate or severe MR (71.6 vs. 71.4% at 5 years; p = 0.992) differ significantly between the two genders. Predictors for late moderate or severe MR were anterior leaflet prolapse (hazard ratio [HR] 4.45; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.18-16.72; p = 0.027) and isolated annular dilation (HR 5.47, 95% CI 1.29-23.25; p = 0.021). CONCLUSION: In this series of patients undergoing isolated MR repair, despite significant differences in smoking, cerebrovascular accidents, creatinine, LVEDD, and isolated annular dilatation at baseline, and 24-hour drainage postoperatively, women and men did not show significant differences in early and late survival, reoperation, and freedom from late moderate or severe MR.

INTRODUCTION: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a complex pathophysiological process, and increasing attention has been paid to the important role of post-synaptic density (PSD) proteins, such as glutamate receptors. Our previous study showed that a PSD protein Arc/Arg3.1 (Arc) regulates endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and neuronal necroptosis in traumatic injury in vitro. AIM: In this study, we investigated the expression, regulation and biological function of Arc in both in vivo and in vitro experimental TBI models. RESULTS: Traumatic neuronal injury (TNI) induced a temporal upregulation of Arc in cortical neurons, while TBI resulted in sustained increase in Arc expression up to 24 h in rats. The increased expression of Arc was mediated by the activity of metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGluR5), but not dependent on the intracellular calcium (Ca2+) release. By using inhibitors and antagonists, we found that TNI regulates Arc expression via Gq protein and protein turnover. In addition, overexpression of Arc protects against TBI-induced neuronal injury and motor dysfunction both in vivo and in vitro, whereas the long-term cognitive function was not altered. To determine the role of Arc in mGluR5-induced protection, lentivirus-mediated short hairpin RNA (shRNA) transfection was performed to knockdown Arc expression. The mGluR5 agonist (RS)-2-chloro-5-hydroxyphenylglycine (CHPG)-induced protection against TBI was partially prevented by Arc knockdown. Furthermore, the CHPG-induced attenuation of Ca2+ influx after TNI was dependent on Arc activation and followed regulation of AMPAR subunits. The results of Co-IP and Ca2+ imaging showed that the Arc-Homer1 interaction contributes to the CHPG-induced regulation of intracellular Ca2+ release. CONCLUSION: In summary, the present data indicate that the mGluR5-mediated Arc activation is a protective mechanism that attenuates neurotoxicity following TBI through the regulation of intracellular Ca2+ hemostasis. The AMPAR-associated Ca2+ influx and ER Ca2+ release induced by Homer1-IP3R pathway might be involved in this protection.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: High-density lipoprotein (HDL) might lose atheroprotective functions in the presence of diabetes. We sought to examine associations of HDL cholesterol (HDL-C) and HDL particle (HDL-P) subclasses with risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) stratified by diabetes. METHODS: We included 393,516 participants (20,691 diabetics and 372,825 nondiabetics) from the UK Biobank. Restricted cubic splines cooperated with Cox model were used to estimate associations of HDL with CHD. RESULTS: During a median follow-up of 13.0 years, 3398 (16.4 %) and 24,772 (6.6 %) incident CHD events occurred among diabetics and nondiabetics, respectively. HDL-C showed inverse associations with CHD among nondiabetics, whereas U-shaped associations among diabetics. Compared to individuals with normal HDL-C (40th - 60th percentile, 1.32-1.51 mmol/L), those in the top percentile (95th, >2.16 mmol/L) had lower CHD risks among nondiabetics (Hazard Ratio, 0.79; 95 % confidence interval, 0.73-0.86), but higher risks among diabetics (1.38, 1.02-1.88). As for HDL-P, there were inverted U-shaped associations of very large HDL-P and linearly negative associations of large HDL-P with CHD among nondiabetics; however, linearly positive associations of very large HDL-P and null associations of large HDL were observed among diabetics. L-shaped associations of medium and small HDL-P were found both in diabetics and nondiabetics. CONCLUSIONS: Very high HDL-C levels were associated with lower CHD risks in nondiabetics, but higher risks in diabetics. Smaller HDL-P was negatively, whereas very large HDL-P was positively associated with CHD risk in diabetics. These data advance our knowledge about the interactions between HDL and diabetes.

Background: About 20% of on-treatment patients with chronic hepatitis B (CHB) experienced low-level viraemia (LLV), which is associated with persistent low-grade inflammation, fibrosis progression, and increased risk of hepatocellular carcinoma. We aimed to investigate the high-risk factors related to LLV. Methods: In this retrospective study, patients receiving entecavir (ETV) treatment from January 2018 to January 2023 were enrolled, and were divided into a LLV (HBV DNA 20-2000 IU/mL) cohort and a complete virological response (CVR) (HBV DNA < 20 IU/mL) cohort according to the virological response at week 48 posttreatment. Treatment baseline characteristics were retrieved from electronic medical records. Multivariate logistic regression was performed. Results: Totally, 1653 patients were enrolled, male patients accounted for 73.0%; the median age was 44 years; the mean HBV DNA level was 5.9 Log10 IU/ml. Among them, 472 (28.6%) experienced LLV. Multivariate analysis showed that HBeAg positivity (OR = 2.650, 95% CI: 2.000-3.511, p < 0.001), HBV DNA ≥ 6.0 Log10 IU/mL (OR = 1.370, 95% CI: 1.054-1.780, p = 0.019), qHBsAg ≥ 9000 IU/mL (OR = 4.472, 95% CI: 3.410-5.866, p < 0.001), cirrhosis (OR = 1.650, 95% CI: 1.234-2.207, P = 0.001), LSM ≥ 13.0 kPa (OR = 1.644, 95% CI: 1.203-2.246, p = 0.002), and PLT < 100×109/L (OR = 1.450, 95% CI: 1.094-1.922, p = 0.010) at baseline were related to the development of LLV. Conclusions: High HBV DNA/HBsAg quantification/LSM, low PLT, HBeAg positivity, and liver cirrhosis were high-risk factors associated with LLV in patients receiving entecavir treatment.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal polyps, which are characterized by a high recurrence rate, represent preneoplastic conditions of the intestine. Due to unclear mechanisms of pathogenesis, first-line therapies for non-hereditary recurrent colorectal polyps are limited to endoscopic resection. Although recent studies suggest a mechanistic link between intestinal dysbiosis and polyps, the exact compositions and roles of bacteria in the mucosa around the lesions, rather than feces, remain unsettled. AIM: To clarify the composition and diversity of bacteria in the mucosa surrounding or 10 cm distal to recurrent intestinal polyps. METHODS: Mucosal samples were collected from four patients consistently with adenomatous polyps (Ade), seven consistently with non-Ade (Pol), ten with current Pol but previous Ade, and six healthy individuals, and bacterial patterns were evaluated by 16S rDNA sequencing. Linear discriminant analysis and Student's t-tests were used to identify the genus-level bacteria differences between groups with different colorectal polyp phenotypes. Pearson's correlation coefficients were used to evaluate the correlation between intestinal bacteria at the genus level and clinical indicators. RESULTS: The results confirmed a decreased level of probiotics and an enrichment of pathogenic bacteria in patients with all types of polyps compared to healthy individuals. These changes were not restricted to the mucosa within 0.5 cm adjacent to the polyps, but also existed in histologically normal tissue 10 cm distal from the lesions. Significant differences in bacterial diversity were observed in the mucosa from individuals with normal conditions, Pol, and Ade. Increased abundance of Gram-negative bacteria, including Klebsiella, Plesiomonas, and Cronobacter, was observed in Pol group and Ade group, suggesting that resistance to antibiotics may be one risk factor for bacterium-related harmful environment. Meanwhile, age and gender were linked to bacteria changes, indicating the potential involvement of sex hormones. CONCLUSION: These preliminary results support intestinal dysbiosis as an important risk factor for recurrent polyps, especially adenoma. Targeting specific pathogenic bacteria may attenuate the recurrence of polyps.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate physicians' awareness and knowledge towards pediatric nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and their attitude toward change in nomenclature from NAFLD to metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) or metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) in China. METHODS: The questionnaire survey contained five parts (characteristics of the participants, epidemiology, diagnosis, management of NAFLD, and attitudes toward the nomenclature of MAFLD/MASLD). The participants included 53 hepatologists, 88 gastroenterologists (GEs), 74 endocrinologists (ENDOs), 61 primary care physicians (PCPs), and 157 pediatricians across 31 municipalities, provinces and autonomous regions of China's mainland. RESULTS: Hepatologists saw the largest number of pediatric NAFLD patients annually (median 9 [range 1-20]), with the lowest number by PCPs (even notwithstanding one patient annually). The primary sources of pediatric NAFLD knowledge were acquired via guidelines. Hepatologists had the highest total knowledge score among all five types of physicians. Approximately one-third of nonspecialists (ENDOs and PCPs) considered liver biopsy necessary for pediatric NAFLD patients, and this percentage increased to half in specialists (hepatologists and GEs). For nonspecialists, the major barriers to the management of pediatric NAFLD were poor patient adherence to lifestyle modifications and lacking confidence in managing NAFLD. Above 90% physicians agreed to change the nomenclature NAFLD to MAFLD; however, they were not sure whether it could reduce the economic burden. CONCLUSIONS: Despite the epidemic of pediatric NAFLD in China, a significant knowledge gap remains in the identification, diagnosis, and treatment of pediatric NAFLD, particularly among frontline workers such as pediatricians and PCPs. More education programs should be carried out in the future.

The development of high-performance organic photovoltaic materials is of crucial importance for the commercialization of organic solar cells (OSCs). Herein, two structurally simple donor-π-conjugated linker-acceptor (D-π-A)-configured small-molecule donors with methyl-substituted triphenylamine as D unit, 1,1-dicyanomethylene-3-indanone as A unit, and thiophene or furan as π-conjugated linker, named DTICPT and DTICPF, are developed. DTICPT and DTICPF are facilely prepared via a two-step synthetic process with simple procedures. DTICPF with a furan π-conjugated linker exhibits stronger and broader optical absorption, deeper highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) energy levels, and better charge transport, compared to its thiophene analog DTICPT. As a result, vacuum-deposited OSCs based on DTICPF: C70 show an impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 9.36% (certified 9.15%) with short-circuit current density (Jsc) up to 17.49 mA cm-2 (certified 17.56 mA cm-2), which is the highest Jsc reported so far for vacuum-deposited OSCs. Besides, devices based on DTICPT: C70 and DTICPF: C70 exhibit excellent long-term stability under different aging conditions. This work offers important insights into the rational design of D-π-A configured small-molecule donors for high efficient and stable vacuum-deposited OSCs.

BACKGROUND: The poor nutritional characteristics and potentially harmful molecules in ultraprocessed foods (UPFs) are risk factors for diabetic microvascular complications. However, the evidence regarding UPFs and diabetic microvascular complications remains limited. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate the associations between UPF consumption and risk of diabetic microvascular complications, to examine the underlying biological pathways (e.g., inflammation and lipid profile), and to identify whether the associations differ by type of UPF dietary patterns. METHODS: We included a prospective cohort of UK Biobank participants with type 2 diabetes (T2D) having at least one 24-h dietary recall (N = 5685). UPFs were defined using the Nova classification. Principal component analysis was used to derive UPF consumption patterns. Associations of UPFs and their consumption patterns with microvascular complications were assessed using Cox proportional hazards regression models. Mediation analyses were used to estimate the mediating effects of 22 biomarkers. RESULTS: During a median of 12.7 y of follow-up, 1243 composite microvascular complications events occurred (599 diabetic retinopathy, 237 diabetic neuropathy, and 662 diabetic kidney disease events). Five consumption patterns were identified (spread and bread, cereal prepared with liquids, dairy-based products, sugary beverage and snack, and mixed beverage and savory snack patterns). A 10% increment in the proportion of UPF was associated with higher hazards of the composite microvascular complications (hazard ratio [HR]: 1.08; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03, 1.13) and diabetic kidney disease (HR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.06, 1.20). Triglycerides, C-reactive protein, and body mass index collectively explained 22.0% (9.6%-43.0%) of the association between UPF intake and composite microvascular complications. Pattern high in mixed beverage and savory snack was associated with a higher risk of composite microvascular complications. CONCLUSIONS: Higher UPF consumption was associated with higher risks of diabetic microvascular complications, and the association was partly mediated through multiple potential ways.

ABSTRACT: Compounds isolated from Epimedium include the total flavonoids of Epimedium, icariin, and its metabolites (icaritin, icariside I, and icariside II), which have similar molecular structures. Modern pharmacological research and clinical practice have proved that Epimedium and its active components have a wide range of pharmacological effects, especially in improving sexual function, hormone regulation, anti-osteoporosis, immune function regulation, anti-oxidation, and anti-tumor activity. To date, we still need a comprehensive source of knowledge about the pharmacological effects of Epimedium and its bioactive compounds on the male reproductive system. However, their actions in other tissues have been reviewed in recent years. This review critically focuses on the Epimedium, its bioactive compounds, and the biochemical and molecular mechanisms that modulate vital pathways associated with the male reproductive system. Such intrinsic knowledge will significantly further studies on the Epimedium and its bioactive compounds that protect the male reproductive system and provide some guidances for clinical treatment of related male reproductive disorders.
