Introduction:Weight stigma, present among health professionals and students, harms the health and healthcare of people with overweight and obesity and must be combated. Objective:This article aims to report the results obtained through a test application of an educational course on weight stigma and healthcare. Methods:The test was carried out with 11 healthcare professionals and had a mixed design. In the quantitative component, statistical analysis was carried out on the initial and final results obtained using theAntifat Attitudes Scale (AFAT), with a paired t test (significance level of p ≤ 0.05). In the qualitative component, a thematic content analysis was carried out with data produced in a final dissertation activity about ideas that were highlighted from thecourse. Structured feedback regarding the quality of the material was completed. Results:Statistical analyzes did not identify changes between initial and final AFAT values (p >0.05), with an initial overall average score of 0.418 and final of 0.419. Five themes emerged from the content analysis, which demonstrate learning regarding the multifactorial nature of obesity; recognition of intersectional implications; understanding of impacts of stigma on health care; stimulation of critical thinking; and considerations about the course, overall, consistently well evaluated. Conclusion: The quantitative instrument did not indicate change, however, qualitative analysis indicated that the course promoted expanded understanding of the topics discussed, as well as reflection and self-criticism by professionals.

RESUMEN
The aim of this study was to understand how dietitians' body size influences perceived competence and warmth, based on the Stereotype Content Model (SCM). Online data were collected from 1,039 Brazilians, who were either laypeople, registered dietitians, or nutrition students. Participants rated the competence and warmth dimensions of three dietitians who differed in sex, body weight, and age. Participants also indicated how likelythey would consult or recommend each dietitian for nutritional advice, and indicated their attitudes toward people with obesity (PWO) [using The Antifat Attitudes Test (AFAT)]. Laypeople attributed less competence and warmth to all profiles compared to dietitians and students (p < 0.001). Three clusters occupied the SCM warmth-by-competence space. However, the clusters were different among groups (laypeople, dietitians, and students). For lay participants, the woman without overweight, the older woman, and the older man were located in the high competence/medium warmth cluster. Meanwhile, the woman with obesity was located in the medium competence/high warmth cluster. The dietitians and students map found the woman with obesity and the older woman in a high competence and warmth cluster. In general, the woman with obesity, the man without obesity, and the older man can be classified as ambivalent stereotypes, the woman being perceived as more warm than competent and the men more competent than warm. Participants with high AFAT scores were less likely to consult or recommend to a family member a dietitian with obesity. This study contributes to identifying ambivalent stereotypes for dietitians. Dietitians with obesity can be seen as warm but less competent. Also, although less intense than laypeople, dietitians, and students exhibited weight stigma. These findings can foster important discussions about weight stigma and emphasize the need to increase population awareness about the causes of obesity.
Abstract This paper describes and discusses how motherhood is practiced and represented in women's domestic cooking practices in Western Brazilian Amazon. A descriptive and qualitative study was conducted with 16 women cooks using in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed by identifying the regular, expressive and significant units of significance. These women, when childless, cooked to meet their individual needs and out-of-home work schedules. During pregnancy, but specially after birth, women modify their cooking practices, appropriating the preconceived hegemonic ideas on what it means to be a mother, focused on homemaking and greater investment of time and effort. Such changes reinforce the belief that mother-child relations should involve intensive motherhood.

Aim: We aimed to explore how a group of classical ballet dancers perceived their eating attitudes and their bodies, with special attention to the potential presence of eating disorders (EDs) symptoms and body image (dis)satisfaction. Methods: A cross-sectional, mixed-method study was conducted on fourteen trained classical ballet dancers (18-30 years old). Their experiences, perceptions, and feelings regarding eating attitudes and body image concerning classical ballet were acquired through qualitative focus groups. The presence of EDs symptoms and perception and (dis)satisfaction with body image was analyzed quantitatively through self-report questionnaires. Results: Participants reported concerning eating attitudes during the focus groups, such as the regular practice of several restrictive popular diets, constant restriction of foods considered "heavy" or "fatty," meal skipping and ignoring signs of hunger, presence of overeating episodes due to stress and anxiety, feeling guilty about breaking their usual diet, classifying foods as "good" and "bad" or "lean" and "fat," and excluding some of those foods from their usual diets. These reports were partially reflected in the questionnaires, with 50% of the ballerinas showing bulimic symptoms indicative of an unusual eating pattern (only two of them with a significant risk index), 7.1% showing symptoms of moderate binge eating, and 14.3% symptoms of EDs in general. Additionally, when considering their bodies in the context of everyday life, participants were satisfied; however, in the "classical ballet" context, they reported feeling dissatisfied with their shape. These findings were in line with results from the Stunkard's Scale, which revealed that 50% of the sample was dissatisfied with their current body shape and 57.1% indicated that their desired body shape was a leaner figure than one they considered healthy. Conclusions: The constant practice of restrictive diets and other weight-loss strategies to achieve a leaner body were associated with symptoms of EDs and body dissatisfaction in this sample. Importantly, the questionnaires used seemed to underestimate the presence of a disordered eating pattern reported by the participants during focus groups. These data could help to inform psychological and nutritional strategies aimed at improving performance, physical and psychological well-being, and quality of life of ballet dancers.
Abstract This study investigated how the socioeconomic status of mothers living in Cruzeiro do Sul, Acre relates to food access, focusing on the interactions between socioeconomic status and motivations in the process of food choice and food acquisition. Thus the methodological approach chosen to collect data were in-depth interviews and participant observation with 20 women, which were later classified into different socioeconomic status groups. Through a content analysis method, we identified four main factors that mothers considered in the food choice and food acquisition processes: Price, Variety, Convenience, and Strategies. Our results emphasize that socioeconomic inequality influences food access through enhancing some aspects above others in the food choice process, ensuing in different motivations and ways to purchase food. Therefore, on a local level, access to food stores and food acquisition is deeply influenced by socioeconomic status, hence the different socioeconomic status groups' eating practices contrasting very much polarized, such phenomenon is seen by the regional food valorization and the distinction of the regional food compared to the "outside" food.

Although food insecurity configures a public health issue in developing countries going through nutrition transition, there is still lack of evidence on how it is affected by social determinants and its relationship with ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption. Using qualitative methods, we investigated the experience of food (in)security among mothers living in the Brazilian Amazon area, identifying aspects of food insecurity promoting UPF consumption. In-depth interviews were performed with 40 women and inductive content analysis was used. Signs of food insecurity included difficulties in food affordability and irregular access to food. Strategies to deal with lack of food quantity took place during food production (growing foods and raising animals), acquisition (gaining food, shopping incentives and food substitutions) and preparation (creativity in cooking). Not being able to afford staple foods was the main aspect of food insecurity promoting UPF consumption, as fresh foods were substituted by UFP options. Our study contributes to the current literature by presenting explanatory insights about the inconclusive quantitative results on the relationship between food insecurity and UPF consumption. Additionally, it supports the need of policies and interventions focused on promoting sustainable food systems and the regional food culture, which may approach food insecurity through an intersectional perspective.

This article describes and explore eating practices and food preferences among gay men who call themselves bears in São Paulo, Brazil, and their relation with their life history, masculinities representations, and sexuality. It is a qualitative and quantitative research within an ethnographic perspective. A purposive sample of thirty-five self-declared gay bears. The data were analyzed identifying the regular, expressive and meaningful significance units collected through the interviews. We identified that the self-declared bears in São Paulo, Brazil, build a solid relation between food preferences, eating practices, masculinity, and group belonging. From the bear's perspective, meat, especially bovine, is related to masculinity and extensively understood as a strong common bond within the community, leveraging their sexuality. For these persons, eating meat as well as drinking beer can build the ideal mannish and unfeminine body that is overvalue. Being gay and "eating like a man," as well as exposing a "macho" body while disdaining other body types constructions could represent a strategy to avoid discrimination, shame and humiliation. On the other way, this community does not just linearly imitate heterosexual men although their conducts can reproduce patriarchal representations and meanings through eating practices. These findings could be used to understand the complexity of alimentary practices, particularly food preferences as well as commensalities, among specific communities or membership groups.

This study investigates the processes of acculturation, interculturality and interactions in the eating habits of Syrian refugees who had a Syrian food venue in the city of São Paulo, Brazil. We conducted a qualitative study, with an ethnographical design, with ten participants, using semi-structured interviews and participant and non-participant observation. There were changes in the preparation of consumed and served food products. These changes were accompanied by tensions, connected to the acculturation strategies and intercultural relations. Even with these changes, consuming Syrian food allowed our participants to maintain connections with their original country, despite the sudden temporal and spatial separation.

Abstract We investigated fat women's perceptions of their own bodies and their experiences with weight-related discriminations, and how these situations affected their well-being. Thirty-nine obese women were interviewed, and three axes of analysis were identified: (1) repercussions of being fat, (2) living with a fat body, and (3) am I a person or just a fat body? These axes were composed of eight themes which had similar meaning or complemented each other. The results showed our participants had mechanisms to diminish the magnitude of their stigmatized bodies (e.g., attempting to lose weight and changing their current food choices). Participants also reported being fat had physical and psychological consequences for them. Most notably, their larger bodies influenced their self-evaluation, making them feel devalued, unlovable, incapable, and incomplete. They reported stigmatizing experiences in familiar situations, at the workplace and in public spaces, and reported being stigmatized by both close and unknown individuals, including healthcare professionals. These professionals were reported to treat patients disrespectfully, which urges attention to health care inequalities for obese people. Our results stress stigmatizing attitudes towards fat people and their own considerations about themselves have negative consequences in their physical and mental well-being.

This study aimed to assess consumers' uses of and opinions on the current Brazilian food label and their reaction to the introduction of a front-of-package warning label. We conducted 12 focus groups among a diverse sample of adult consumers, to broadly assess: (1) uses of and perceptions about the current food label, and (2) opinions about implementing a front-of-package warning label to guide food purchases. Data was analyzed with a triangulation of researchers using an exploratory content analysis, which allowed codes to emerge from the data. The frequency of codes across focus groups was compared by gender and socioeconomic status to explore differences by these sociodemographic factors. Codes were divided into six main themes: (1) "Reasons for using food labels"; (2) "Barriers to using food labels"; (3) "Requirements for a new label"; (4) "Perceived influence on consumption behaviors"; (5) "Perceived influence on child behaviors"; and (6) "Perceptions of the food manufacturers using of warning labels". Participants used food labels to check nutrient content and ingredient information but the format of these labels and the technicality of the content displayed often made the information inaccessible, particularly for those with low socioeconomic status. Most participants were supportive of the display of front-of-package warning labels on products and considered them useful to inform purchases. Women believed that they and their children would reduce the consumption of foods with front-of-package warning labels, while men reported more polarity in their intentions. For men and their children, front-of-package warning labels would result in either stopping food intake entirely or continued consumption without changes to the amount. The study results highlight the potential of front-of-package warning labels to support healthier behaviors in both consumers and their children.

The civil war in Syria began in 2011 and there is currently no prospect of resolution. This has led to an intensive forced migration. Due to the agile Brazilian policy of issuing visas, the Syrians became the largest group of refugees living in Brazil. Although migration might have a significant effect on eating practices, there are no studies analyzing eating practices, including the sociocultural representations of these practices to Syrian refugees. Thus, we aimed to analyze the representations of what is Syrian food for Syrian refugees who have Syrian food-based enterprises in the city of São Paulo. We conducted a qualitative study, with ethnographic design, using semi-structured interviews and participant and non-participant observation. The ten participants were of Syrian nationality; have taken refuge in Brazil since 2011 and had some type of enterprise with Syrian food in the city of São Paulo. We obtained seven themes that encompassed the native and meaningful category of Syrian food: 1) variety; 2) the hand that makes the food had to be Syrian; 3) ingredients; 4) the food presentation; 5) social preference for omnivorism; 6) labor and; 7) connection with the nuclear and extended family. In Brazil, as refugees, the Syrian food made them 'feel at home' and seemed to become a point of reference and a bridge, allowing them to continue perceiving and recognizing themselves as Syrians.

Introduction: The "Health at Every Size®" (HAES®) approach is being more and more used to the care of people with obesity. Objective: To understand the effects of a new interdisciplinary intervention based on the HAES® approach, especially regarding food choice processes. Methods: This was a prospective, seven-month, randomized, controlled, mixed-method, clinical trial. Fifty-eight obese women composed the sample and were randomly allocated into the intervention (I-HAES®) or control (CTRL) groups. The I-HAES® intervention consisted of a new proposal of care based on the HAES® approach, comprising physical activity classes three times a week, biweekly individual nutritional sessions, and five philosophical workshops. The CTRL intervention consisted of a traditional intervention based on this approach, comprising bimonthly lectures. Both groups were assessed at the beginning and after the intervention for blood tests, aerobic condition, body weight and waist and hip circumferences, muscle function, in addition to the filling of scales and questionnaires self-administered. Two semi-structured individual interviews and two focus groups were conducted with all participants. The qualitative data were analyzed using the content analysis technique, whereas the quantitative data were analyzed using the statistical software SAS and SPSS. Results: Although both groups reported improvements in food quality, they were more expressive in the I-HAES® group. It seems that this improvement was related to this group higher engagement with culinary experiences and the increase in food planning. Other strategies that positively impacted on the food choices of this group were eating mindfully, deliberately, and in response to hunger and satiety cues. Initially, participants of both groups reported that their bodies had negative physical and psychological consequences, impacted their self-assessment, and were subject to stigmatization. After the intervention, most of the I-HAES® group reported that although weight loss was still an expectation, they were satisfied with other gains they had, no longer placed weight loss as central to their happiness and understood that the changes would take place in the long term. Body weight, body mass index, and waist and hip circumferences did not differ significantly within or between groups (p > 0.05). I-HAES® showed increased peak oxygen uptake and improved performance in the timed-stand test (P = 0.004 and P = 0.004, between-group comparisons). No significant within- or between-group differences were observed for objectively measured physical activity levels, although most participants in the I-HAES® group reported that they were engaged in or had plans to include physical activities in their routines. Both groups presented improvements related to quality of life, but in the I-HAES® group these were more expressive. Conclusions: A new intervention based on the HAES® approach seemed superior to a traditional intervention. Although no changes were observed in body weight and physical activity levels, this new intervention improved participants' food choices, eating attitudes and practices, their perception of body image, physical capacity and quality of life

Abstract This study aimed to present the cross-cultural adaptation of the State and Trait Food Cravings Questionnaires (FCQ-S and FCQ-T) into Portuguese. Tools were translated and back-translated, field experts evaluated the conceptual, operational and item-based equivalence and a sample of students assessed tools, evaluating the level of understanding and analyzing internal consistency through Cronbach's coefficient. In addition, the semantic equivalence was assessed though the intraclass correlation coefficient between the bilingual scores in each question of both versions (English and Portuguese). Tools were considered easy to understand (experts scored 95.4% and 97% for the FCQ-T and FCQ-S, respectively, and 81.8% of students considered them easy to understand), and showed satisfactory internal consistency values (FCQ-T ranged from 0.6 to 0.8 and FCQ-S ranged from 0.5 to 0.8). From the cross-cultural adaptation process, the satisfactory results enable the recommendation of the Brazilian version of FCQs.
RESUMEN
This study explored the effects of Health at Every Size(®)-based intervention on obese women by qualitatively evaluating participants' perception toward the program and quantitatively evaluating changes related to psychological, behavioral, and body composition assessments. A prospective 1-year quasi-experimental mixed-method trial was conducted. The mixed-method design was characterized by a spiral method, and quantitative and qualitative findings were combined during the interpretation phase. The qualitative data involved three focus groups; and quantitative data comprised physiological, psychological, and behavioral assessments. Initially, 30 participants were recruited; 14 concluded the intervention. From the focus groups, the following interpretative axes were constructed: the intervention as a period of discoveries; shifting parameters: psychological, physical, and behavioral changes; eating changes, and; redefining success. Body weight, body mass index, total body fat mass, and body fat percentage were significantly decreased after the intervention (-3.6, -3.2, -13.0, and -11.1%, respectively; p ≤ 0.05, within-time effect). Participants reported to be more physically active and perceiving better their bodies. Eating-wise, participants reported that the hunger and satiety cues and the consumption of more frequent meals facilitated their eating changes. Finally, participants reported that they could identify feelings with eating choices and refrain from the restrained behavior. These qualitative improvements were accompanied by modest but significant improvements in quantitative assessments. Clinicaltrials.gov registration: NCT02102061.
RESUMEN
A population-based cross-sectional study was conducted with mothers living in the city of Santos, Brazil, in order to investigate their eating practices, and the interface between those practices and the concept of habitus. From a cluster analysis of the scores for dietary pattern and for food preparation and consumption, the mothers were categorised into five clusters of eating practices: practical mothers (19.8%), symbiotic mothers (3.2%), health-conscious hedonists (17.3%), traditionalists (34.6%), and family cooks (25.1%). To access the habitus of the eating-practice clusters, the following variables were compared: location of residence, profession, socioeconomic status, weight-loss practices, risk behaviours for eating disorders, disordered eating attitudes, body dissatisfaction, and cultural and technological consumption. For all the groups, the observed eating practices were permeated by responsibility for the family's diet, but with different manifestations. For symbiotic mothers, practical mothers, and family cooks, the primary function of their relation with food was to nourish their families, with little expression of their own tastes and preferences. The traditionalists and the health-conscious hedonists, on the other hand, manifested their role as mothers by providing food considered 'nutritionally proper' to their family members. Furthermore, aspects of contemporary lifestyles, such as little time for food, individualisation of meals, and consumption of processed foods, were found to coexist with the valorisation and maintenance of the traditional meals within some groups. The variety of eating practices could not be understood as a linear association between economic and cultural capitals; however, eating practices seemed to interact with those capitals, composing a habitus.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to analyze qualitatively how women, who have recovered from anorexia nervosa, perceive and describe their current eating practices, as well as the ones developed during the eating disorder period. METHODS: Seven women were interviewed individually with the objective of investigating their eating practices, transition phases and all relevant aspects that somewhat contributed to the habit-forming; experiences, feelings and perceptions related to mealtime and the influence that food has had over the present subjects' life. The interviews were analyzed by the discourse of the collective subject method. RESULTS: The results brought up the following topics: a) control; b) concerns and feelings; c) deprivation d) beauty dictatorship; e) eating competence; f) importance of food; g) food cacophony. CONCLUSIONS: What stands out is a multiplicity of eating practices, which during the eating disorder were similar to and characterized by restriction; however, after recovery, part of the subjects seem to have developed a higher eating competence, whereas others show a practice similar to the one acquired during the anorexia nervosa, such as the difficulty in realizing when they are satisfied and a feeling of discomfort when facing social interactions.
