RESUMEN

This study is focused on the high-temperature corrosion evaluation of selected thermally sprayed coatings. NiCoCrAlYHfSi, NiCoCrAlY, NiCoCrAlTaReY, and CoCrAlYTaCSi coatings were sprayed on the base material 1.4923. This material is used as a cost-efficient construction material for components of power equipment. All evaluated coatings were sprayed using HP/HVOF (High-Pressure/High-Velocity Oxygen Fuel) technology. High-temperature corrosion testing was performed in a molten salt environment typical for coal-fired boilers. All coatings were exposed to the environment of 75% Na2SO4 and 25% NaCl at the temperature of 800 °C under cyclic conditions. Each cycle consisted of 1 h heating in a silicon carbide tube furnace followed by 20 min of cooling. The weight change measurement was performed after each cycle to establish the corrosion kinetics. Optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and elemental analysis (EDS) were used to analyze the corrosion mechanism. The CoCrAlYTaCSi coating showed the best corrosion resistance of all the evaluated coatings, followed by NiCoCrAlTaReY and NiCoCrAlY. All the evaluated coatings performed better in this environment than the reference P91 and H800 steels.

The effects of surface pretreatments on the cerium-based conversion coating applied on an AA5083 aluminum alloy were investigated using a combination of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), polarization testing, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Two steps of pretreatments containing acidic or alkaline solutions were applied to the surface to study the effects of surface pretreatments. Among the pretreated samples, the sample prepared by the pretreatment of the alkaline solution then acid washing presented higher corrosion protection (~3 orders of magnitude higher than the sample without pretreatment). This pretreatment provided a more active surface for the deposition of the cerium layer and provided a more suitable substrate for film formation, and made a more uniform film. The surface morphology of samples confirmed that the best surface coverage was presented by alkaline solution then acid washing pretreatment. The presence of cerium in the (EDS) analysis demonstrated that pretreatment with the alkaline solution then acid washing resulted in a higher deposition of the cerium layer on the aluminum surface. After selecting the best surface pretreatment, various deposition times of cerium baths were investigated. The best deposition time was achieved at 10 min, and after this critical time, a cracked film formed on the surface that could not be protective. The corrosion resistance of cerium-based conversion coatings obtained by electrochemical tests were used for training three computational techniques (artificial neural network (ANN), adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system (ANFIS), and support vector machine regression (SVMR)) based on Pretreatment-1 (acidic or alkaline cleaning: pH (1)), Pretreatment-2 (acidic or alkaline cleaning: pH (2)), and deposition time in the cerium bath as an input. Various statistical criteria showed that the ANFIS model (R2 = 0.99, MSE = 48.83, and MAE = 3.49) could forecast the corrosion behavior of a cerium-based conversion coating more accurately than other models. Finally, due to the robust performance of ANFIS in modeling, the effect of each parameter was studied.

Within the cocoa market (Theobroma cacao L.), quality and prices are often determined by geographical origin, making traceability indispensable. Therefore, to investigate possibilities of tracing by analytical methods, 48 carefully selected cocoa samples from 20 countries have been profiled using a combination of stable isotope-ratio mass spectrometry (IRMS) and proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR). Chemometric analysis of combined data sets from both, stable isotope data (δ13C, δ15N, δ18O, δ2H, %C, %N, %O, %H) and 1H NMR fingerprints, achieved good separation with increased classification rates compared to classification with data of the isolated methods. IRMS contributed primarily to discrimination between countries, while 1H NMR significantly contributed to separation of varieties, but also the regions within individual countries. This study thus demonstrates that combination of two analytical methods is an effective tool to enhance both, accuracy and precision, in authenticity testing of cocoa.

Increasing evidence is showing that the non-neuronal cholinergic system plays an important role in the pathology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Choline transport into the cell is the rate-limiting step for the synthesis of acetylcholine (ACh), which can be released directly or in vesicles from the cell. However, in the human joint little is known about choline import or the release of ACh from the cell. Thus, we analyze the expression of members of the organic cation transporter (OCT), of the newly discovered choline transporter-like (CTL) family and of classical neuronal components such as the high-affinity choline transporter (CHT1) and the vesicular ACh transporter (VAChT) in the synovium and cartilage of the human hip joint from patients with osteoarthritis (OA) and RA. OCT1, OCT3 and OCTN1 and all members of the CTL family were expressed in synovial and cartilage samples. The expression of CTL1 and CTL2 was localized in synovial macrophages and fibroblasts. CHT1 mRNA expression was detectable only in the synovium, whereas VAChT was completely absent in all samples. Therefore, in the human joint, choline transport into the cell and the release of ACh seems to be mediated mainly by members of the OCT and CTL family. Expression of transporters appears not to be influenced by the pathological state, as no differences have been detected between joints from OA or RA patients. Importantly, however, all necessary components for choline import and the release of non-neuronal ACh are present in the human joint.

AIMS: As the stimulation of the α7-nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (nAChR), which is present in the synovium of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), leads to a decrease in pro-inflammatory cytokines, the α7-nAChR is being discussed as a new therapeutic target. On this background we addressed the question whether α7-nAChR mRNA was differentially expressed in RA compared to osteoarthritis (OA) synovial samples and whether other components of the non-neuronal cholinergic system were also present and differentially expressed in the synovium of patients with RA in comparison to OA. MAIN METHODS: The expression of nicotinic and muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (mAChRs), choline and acetylcholine transporters, synthesising and degrading enzymes was determined in human samples of synovial tissue from patients with RA and OA using RT-PCR and immunofluorescence labelling. KEY FINDINGS: Compared to OA, patients with RA showed increased expression of nAChR subunit ß4 while a decline in subunits α2 and α4 as well as in mAChR M1R was observed. For all other nAChR subunits and mAChRs however there was no significant difference between RA and OA patients. With regard to the ACh transporters and enzymes no expressional changes were observed between OA and RA patients, except for the choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) which was only detected in OA but not in RA synovium. SIGNIFICANCE: Our results indicate that besides α7-nAChR other components of the non-neuronal cholinergic system are present and differentially expressed in the synovium of RA and OA patients, which makes them interesting alternative targets in the development of new strategies for RA therapy.
