RESUMEN

Complex elbow fractures featuring a comminuted coronoid process are infrequent and pose considerable treatment challenges. The optimal strategy for maximizing recovery of elbow function through osteosynthesis remains a subject of ongoing debate among surgeons. We applied the principle of internal fixation by implementing intra-osteal fixation with a mini plate, which facilitated the successful restoration of exceptional elbow function in the patient. This approach adeptly managed the complexity of the coronoid process fracture, encompassing its fragmentation and associated injuries, thereby demonstrating its feasibility and efficacy in achieving favorable clinical outcomes. This article investigates the viability of this surgical technique for managing such complex fractures.

To evaluate the efficacy of yellow light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation at 590 nm, alone or in combination with anti-inflammatory active substances against ultraviolet (UV)-induced inflammation in keratinocytes. HaCaT keratinocytes were pretreated with LED yellow light (590 nm) alone or in combination with an antiinflammatory active substance such as glycerophosphoinositol choline (GC), extract of grains of paradise (Aframomum melegueta Schum, AM), or a bisabolol and ginger root extract mixture (Bb-GE) before UVB irradiation. Following each treatment, we measured the levels of inflammatory mediators secreted by keratinocytes. HaCaT keratinocytes treated with UVB (300 mJ cm-²) and then cultured for 24 h exhibited significantly upregulated expression of proinflammatory factors, including interleukin (IL)-1α, prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), and IL-8. After pretreatment with 590 nm LED, UVB-induced inflammatory responses were significantly inhibited. Co-pretreatment with 590 nm LED irradiation and GC further inhibited the expression of IL-1α and IL-8. IL-8 expression was inhibited by co-pretreatment with 590 nm LED irradiation and AM, whereas PGE2 expression was inhibited by co-pretreatment with 590 nm LED irradiation and Bb-GE. Co-treatment with 590 nm LED irradiation and various active substances modulated UVB-induced inflammation in keratinocytes, suggesting the potential application of this approach to prevent damage caused by voluntary sun exposure in daily life.

Achieving a narrow emission bandwidth is long pursued for display applications. Among all primary colors, obtaining pure red emission with high visual perception is the most challenging. In this work, CsPbI3 halide perovskite nanoplatelets (NPLs) with rigorously controlled 2D  [PbI6]4- octahedron layer number (n) are demonstrated. A perovskite core-PbSO4 shell structure is designed to prevent aggregation and fusion between NPLs, enabling consistent thickness and quantum confinement strength for each NPL. Consequently, exact n = 4 CsPbI3 NPLs are demonstrated, exhibiting emission peaks around 630 nm, with very narrow spectral bandwidths of <24 nm and high absolute photoluminescence quantum yields up to 85%. The emission of n = 4 NPLs falls exactly within the pure-red region, closely aligning with the International Telecommunication Union Recommendation BT.2020  standard. Measurements suggest predominant stability and color homogeneity compared to traditional red-emitting CsPbIxBr3- x nanocrystals. Finally, proof-of-concept pure-red emissive light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are demonstrated by integrating n = 4 CsPbI3 NPLs films with a blue LED chip, showing an excellent external quantum efficiency of 18.3% and high brightness exceeding 3 × 106 nits. Stringent requirements for future display technologies, are satisfied based on the high color purity, stability, and brightness of CsPbI3 NPLs.

Objective: To compare low- vs high-power HoLEP effects on coagulation in patients on antiplatelet (AP) therapy via thromboelastography (TEG). Methods: 210 patients was retrospectively analyzed and stratificated into three discrete groups, specifically: Group A (AP therapy, high-power HoLEP, n = 72); Group B (AP therapy, low-power HoLEP, n=73); Group C (no AP therapy, low-power HoLEP, n = 65). Baseline characteristics and coagulation profiles via TEG were compared. Univariate and multivariate analyses were conducted to identify independent risk factors associated with hematuria. Furthermore, parameters such as IPSS, Qmax, post-void residual volume V2 and PSA levels were recorded during 1year follow-up. Results: No differences in terms of baseline characteristics across all groups. Significant differences were observed in the duration of enucleation, morcellation, bladder irrigation, post-operative catheterization, length of hospital stay and the extent of hemoglobin reduction (F = 54.06, 8.54, 6.68, 9.24, 17.06, 5.97, p < 0.05). No differences were noted in postoperative hematuria, urine retention, transfusion rates, and SUI (x1 2 = 1.082 ; x2 2 = 0.197,; x3 2 = 3.981;x4 2 = 0.816, p > 0.05). Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that prostate volume emerged as an independent risk factor for hematuria (OR 1.080, 95% CI: 1.007-1.158, p = 0.031). Clinical outcomes including Qmax, IPSS, V2, and PSA demonstrated significant enhancement during 1 year follow-up. Conclusion: Compared to HP-HoLEP, LP-HoLEP effectively reduces surgical and subsequent processing times, decreases hospital stay duration, and diminishes hemoglobin decline, offering a viable option without discontinuing AP therapy.

Introduction: C. psittaci pneumonia has atypical clinical manifestations and is often ignored by clinicians. This study analyzed the clinical characteristics, explored the risk factors for composite outcome and established a prediction model for early prediction of composite outcome among C. psittaci pneumonia patients. Methods: A multicenter, retrospective, observational cohort study was conducted in ten Chinese tertiary hospitals. Patients diagnosed with C. psittaci pneumonia were included, and their clinical data were collected and analyzed. The composite outcome of C. psittaci pneumonia included death during hospitalization, ICU admission, and mechanical ventilation. Univariate and multivariable logistic regression analyses were conducted to determine the significant variables. A ten-fold cross-validation was performed to internally validate the model. The model performance was evaluated using various methods, including receiver operating characteristics (ROC), C-index, sensitivity, specificity, positive/negative predictive value (PPV/NPV), decision curve analysis (DCA), and clinical impact curve analysis (CICA). Results: In total, 83 patients comprised training cohorts and 36 patients comprised validation cohorts. CURB-65 was used to establish predictive Model 1. Multivariate logistic regression analysis identified three independent prognostic factors, including serum albumin, CURB-65, and white blood cells. These factors were employed to construct model 2. Model 2 had acceptable discrimination (AUC of 0.898 and 0.825 for the training and validation sets, respectively) and robust internal validity. The specificity, sensitivity, NPV, and PPV for predicting composite outcome in the nomogram model were 91.7%, 84.5%, 50.0%, and 98.4% in the training sets, and 100.0%, 64.7%, 14.2%, and 100.0% in the validation sets. DCA and CICA showed that the nomogram model was clinically practical. Conclusion: This study constructs a refined nomogram model for predicting the composite outcome in C. psittaci pneumonia patients. This nomogram model enables early and accurate C. psittaci pneumonia patients' evaluation, which may improve clinical outcomes.

OBJECTIVES: To establish a nomogram for differentiating malignant and benign focal liver lesions (FLLs) using ultrasomics features derived from contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS). METHODS: 527 patients were retrospectively enrolled. On the training cohort, ultrasomics features were extracted from CEUS and b-mode ultrasound (BUS). Automatic feature selection and model development were performed using the Ultrasomics-Platform software, outputting the corresponding ultrasomics scores. A nomogram based on the ultrasomics scores from artery phase (AP), portal venous phase (PVP) and delayed phase (DP) of CEUS, and clinical factors were established. On the validation cohort, the diagnostic performance of the nomogram was assessed and compared with seniorexpert and resident radiologists. RESULTS: In the training cohort, the AP, PVP and DP scores exhibited better differential performance than BUS score, with area under the curve (AUC) of 84.1-85.1% compared with the BUS (74.6%, P < 0.05). In the validation cohort, the AUC of combined nomogram and expert was significantly higher than that of the resident (91.4% vs. 89.5% vs. 79.3%, P < 0.05). The combined nomogram had a comparable sensitivity with the expert and resident (95.2% vs. 98.4% vs. 97.6%), while the expert had a higher specificity than the nomogram and the resident (80.6% vs. 72.2% vs. 61.1%, P = 0.205). CONCLUSIONS: A CEUS ultrasomics based nomogram had an expert level performance in FLL characterization.

Ucp1 promoter-driven Cre transgenic mice are useful in the manipulation of gene expression specifically in thermogenic adipose tissues. However, the wildly used Ucp1-Cre line was generated by random insertion into the genome and showed ectopic activity in some tissues beyond adipose tissues. Here we characterized a knockin mouse line Ucp1-iCre generated by targeting IRES-Cre cassette immediately downstream the stop codon of the Ucp1 gene. The Cre insertion had little to no effect on UCP1 protein levels in brown adipose tissue. Ucp1-iCre mice of both genders exhibited normal thermogenesis and cold tolerance. When crossed with Rosa-tdTomato reporter mice, Ucp1-iCre mice showed robust Cre activity in thermogenic adipose tissues. Additionally, limited Cre activity was sparsely present in the hypothalamus (VMH), choroid plexus, kidney, adrenal glands, ovary, and testis in Ucp1-iCre mice, albeit to a much lesser extent and with reduced intensity compared to the conventional Ucp1-Cre line. Single-cell transcriptome analysis revealed UCP1 mRNA expression in male spermatocytes. Moreover, male Ucp1-iCre mice displayed a high frequency of Cre-mediated recombination in the germline, whereas no such effect was observed in female Ucp1-iCre mice. These findings suggest that Ucp1-iCre mice offer promising utility in the context of conditional gene manipulation in thermogenic adipose tissues, while also highlighting the need for caution in mouse mating and genotyping procedures.

The degradation of proteasomes or lysosomes is emerging as a principal determinant of programmed death ligand 1 (PDL1) expression, which affects the efficacy of immunotherapy in various malignancies. Intracellular cholesterol plays a central role in maintaining the expression of membrane receptors; however, the specific effect of cholesterol on PDL1 expression in cancer cells remains poorly understood. Cholesterol starvation and stimulation were used to modulate the cellular cholesterol levels. Immunohistochemistry and western blotting were used to analyze the protein levels in the samples and cells. Quantitative real-time PCR, co-immunoprecipitation, and confocal co-localization assays were used for mechanistic investigation. A xenograft tumor model was constructed to verify these results in vivo. Our results showed that cholesterol suppressed the ubiquitination and degradation of PDL1 in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) cells. Further mechanistic studies revealed that the autocrine motility factor receptor (AMFR) is an E3 ligase that mediated the ubiquitination and degradation of PDL1, which was regulated by the cholesterol/p38 mitogenic activated protein kinase axis. Moreover, lowering cholesterol levels using statins improved the efficacy of programmed death 1 (PD1) inhibition in vivo. Our findings indicate that cholesterol serves as a signal to inhibit AMFR-mediated ubiquitination and degradation of PDL1 and suggest that lowering cholesterol by statins may be a promising combination strategy to improve the efficiency of PD1 inhibition in HCC.

Escalating energy demands of self-independent on-skin/wearable electronics impose challenges on corresponding power sources to offer greater power density, permeability, and stretchability. Here, a high-efficient breathable and stretchable monolithic hybrid triboelectric-piezoelectric-electromagnetic nanogenerator-based electronic skin (TPEG-skin) is reported via sandwiching a liquid metal mesh with two-layer topological insulator-piezoelectric polymer composite nanofibers. TPEG-skin concurrently extracts biomechanical energy (from body motions) and electromagnetic radiations (from adjacent appliances), operating as epidermal power sources and whole-body self-powered sensors. Topological insulators with conductive surface states supply notably enhanced triboelectric and piezoelectric effects, endowing TPEG-skin with a 288 V output voltage (10 N, 4 Hz), ∼3 times that of state-of-the-art devices. Liquid metal meshes serve as breathable electrodes and extract ambient electromagnetic pollution (±60 V, ±1.6 µA cm-2). TPEG-skin implements self-powered physiological and body motion monitoring and system-level human-machine interactions. This study provides compatible energy strategies for on-skin/wearable electronics with high power density, monolithic device integration, and multifunctionality.

Upconversion nanoparticles are popular as imaging probes due to their advantages in photostability and controllable emission dimensions. However, upconversion polarization remains largely uncharted with previous reports limited to microstructures. In this work, we report the observation of polarized upconversion emissions from ß-NaYF4 single nanostructures below 100 nm. At the sub-100 nm scale, nanorods, nanodiscs, and nanoplates exhibit distinctive polarization degrees despite the same doping concentrations of lanthanides. We find this varied polarization degree results from the crystallographic orientation of nanostructure in relation to the light field and can be linked to the distinctive emission spectrum profile with varied Stark splitting transition ratios from Er3+. Our findings provide a comprehensive understanding of the polarization properties of upconversion nanoparticles, revealing a previously unexplored aspect of light emission. This discovery expands our knowledge of upconversion nanoparticles and also opens new possibilities for their use in future imaging and sensing applications, where polarization sensitivity is crucial.

BACKGROUND: Woven coronary artery (WCA) is a rare and underdiagnosed congenital anomaly that involves multiple thin and tortuous epicardial arterial conduits reassembling distally into a single lumen. Recanalized thrombus may present as woven-like coronary arteries, appearing similar to WCA on angiographic images. CASE PRESENTATION: A 58-year-old female patient with intermittent chest pain for 5 years and polycythaemia vera (PV) for 8 years. The left anterior descending artery was presented like WCA on coronary angiography and finally confirmed as recanalized thrombus by optical coherence tomography(OCT), which might have been caused by PV. Given the patient's high thrombotic risk of PV and thrombotic changes in the left circumflex artery (LCX), we ultimately chose a conservative treatment without stenting. CONCLUSIONS: OCT would be needed for the diagnosis and differential diagnosis of woven-like coronary arteries. And physicians should take an appropriate treatment in a personalized way in patients with PV.

Fluorine owing to its inherently high electronegativity exhibits charge delocalization and ion dissociation capabilities; as a result, there has been an influx of research studies focused on the utilization of fluorides to optimize solid electrolyte interfaces and provide dynamic protection of electrodes to regulate the reaction and function performance of batteries. Nonetheless, the shuttle effect and the sluggish redox reaction kinetics emphasize the potential bottlenecks of lithium-sulfur batteries. Whether fluorine modulation regulate the reaction process of Li-S chemistry? Here, the TiOF/Ti3C2 MXene nanoribbons with a tailored F distribution were constructed via an NH4F fluorinated method. Relying on in situ characterizations and electrochemical analysis, the F activates the catalysis function of Ti metal atoms in the consecutive redox reaction. The positive charge of Ti metal sites is increased due to the formation of O-Ti-F bonds based on the Lewis acid-base mechanism, which contributes to the adsorption of polysulfides, provides more nucleation sites and promotes the cleavage of S-S bonds. This facilitates the deposition of Li2S at lower overpotentials. Additionally, fluorine has the capacity to capture electrons originating from Li2S dissolution due to charge compensation mechanisms. The fluorine modulation strategy holds the promise of guiding the construction of fluorine-based catalysts and facilitating the seamless integration of multiple consecutive heterogeneous catalytic processes.

Nitrite is a common nitrogen-containing compound that possesses high biological toxicity, thereby posing a serious threat to aquatic organisms. Therefore, it is imperative to develop a rapid and quantitative determination approach for nitrite. In this study, the aim was to prepare a novel electrochemical sensor to determine nitrite. This was achieved by synthesizing Au/Zn dendritic complexes on a carbon cloth self-supported electrode after plasma treated by a stepwise strategy of electrodeposition and in-situ corrosion. In accordance with the optimal experimental conditions, the electrode exhibited remarkable catalytic activity for the electrooxidation of nitrite ions (pH = 8.0), accompanied by a considerable enhancement in peak anodic current in comparison to the unmodified electrode. The sensor exhibited a wide linear range (1-833 µM, 833-8330 µM), high sensitivity (3506 µA mM-1 cm-2, 538 µA mM-1 cm-2), a low detection limit (0.43 µM), and excellent selectivity, reproducibility, and stability for the determination of nitrite. Furthermore, the prepared sensor was successfully applied to the detection of nitrite in tap water, fish holding pond water and duck pond water, demonstrating good recovery and no significant difference from the spectrophotometric results. The results suggest that the electrochemical sensor developed in this study represents a straightforward yet efficacious approach to the development of advanced portable sensors for aquaculture applications.

The growing global energy demand and heightened environmental consciousness have contributed to the increasing interest in green energy sources, including hydrogen production. However, the efficacy of this technology is contingent upon the efficient separation of charges, high absorption of sunlight, rapid charge transfer rate, abundant active sites and resistance to photodegradation. The utilization of photocatalytic heterostructures coupling two materials has proved to be effective in tackling the aforementioned challenges and delivering exceptional performance in the production of hydrogen. The present article provides a comprehensive overview of operational principles of photocatalysis and the combination of photocatalytic and piezo-catalytic applications with heterostructures, including the transfer behavior and mechanisms of photoexcited non-equilibrium carriers between the materials. Furthermore, the effects of recent advances and state-of-the-art designs of heterostructures on hydrogen production are discussed, offering practical approaches to form heterostructures for efficient hydrogen production.

Tailoring the surface ligands of metal nanoclusters is important for engineering unique configurations of metal nanoclusters. Thiacalix[4]arene has found extensive applications in the construction of metal nanoclusters. In this investigation, we present the synthesis and characterization of the first all-calixarene-protected silver nanoclusters, [Ag(CH3CN)4]2[Ag44(BTCA)6] (Ag44, H4BTCA = p-tert-butylthiacalix[4]arene). Single-crystal X-ray structural analysis reveals that all silver atoms are in a face-centered cubic (fcc) arrangement. The formation of such an fcc structure is attributed to the selectively passivation on {100} facets by BTCA4-. Thiacalixarene substantially facilitates the stability of Ag44 due to its multiple coordination sites and bulkiness. Mass spectrometry and theoretical calculations reveal that Ag44 is a superatomic silver nanocluster with 22 free electrons in the following configuration: 1S21P61D61F22S21D4. This work not only elucidates the impact of macrocyclic ligands on the stabilization of silver clusters but also furnishes an approach for assembling atomically precise fcc nanoclusters.

A multi-stimuli responsive fluorophore, named NBDNI, was developed by constructing a 1,8-naphthalimide derivative in which a rotatable electron-donating N,N-dimethylaniline group attached to its 4-position. This molecular structure endowed NBDNI with aggregate-induced emission (AIE) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) properties, enabling remarkable fluorescence changes in response to multiple external stimuli: (i) sensitivity to polarity in various solvent systems and polymer matrix; (ii) significant fluorescence response and excellent linearity towards temperature changes in solution; (iii) distinct switch of fluorescence color upon acid and base treatments; (iv) reversible mechanochromism behavior in the solid state. Moreover, the mechanisms underlying the aforementioned stimuli-responsive phenomena have been proposed based on comprehensive systematic measurements. Furthermore, preliminary applications such as fluorescence thermometry and acid/base test paper have been demonstrated. This research will bring about new opportunities for the development of novel stimuli-responsive luminescent materials.

PURPOSE: There is currently a strong trend in developing RF coils that are high-density, lightweight, and highly flexible. In addition to the resonator structure of the RF coil itself, the balun or cable trap circuit serves as another essential element in the functionality and sensitivity of RF coils. This study explores the development and application of reproducible highly miniaturized baluns in RF coil design. METHODS: We introduce a novel approach to producing Bazooka baluns with printed coaxial capacitors, enabling the achievement of significant capacitance per unit length. Rigorous electromagnetic simulations and thorough hardware fabrication validate the efficacy of the proposed design across various magnetic field strengths, including 1.5 T, 3 T, and 7 T MRI systems. RESULTS: Bench testing reveals that the proposed balun can achieve an acceptable common-mode rejection ratio even when it is highly miniaturized. The use of printed capacitors allows for a notable reduction in balun length and ensures high reproducibility. Findings demonstrate that the proposed balun exhibits no RF field distortion even when placed close to the sample, making it suitable for flexible coils, wearable coils, and high-density coils, particularly in high-field MRI. CONCLUSION: The reproducibility inherent in the manufacturing process of printed coaxial capacitors allows for simple fabrication and ensures consistency in production. These advancements pave the way for the development of flexible coils, wearable coils, and high-density coils.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) is a prevalent and aggressive malignancy, with metastasis being the leading cause of death in patients. Unfortunately, therapeutic options for metastatic OSCC remain limited. Peptidylarginine deiminases (PADI) are implicated in various tumorigenesis and metastasis processes across multiple cancers. However, the role of PADI2, a type of PADI, in OSCC is not well understood. This study aimed to explore the impact of PADI2 on epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT), angiogenesis, and OSCC metastasis. The effect of PADI2 on EMT was evaluated using cell lines by Western blot analysis with shRNA targeting PADI2. In addition, the selective PADI2 inhibitor AFM32a was used to assess the effect of PADI2 on cancer metastasis and angiogenesis in animal models. Our findings indicated that PADI2 expression correlated with EMT changes, and PADI2 knockdown reversed these changes, reducing cell proliferation, cell migration, and invasion. PADI2 inhibition also diminished tube formation in HUVECs and decreased secretion of angiogenesis-related chemokines CCL3, CCL5 and CCL20. In a mouse model, AFM32a markedly reduced lung metastasis and production of CCL3 and CCL5. Our in vitro and in vivo studies suggested inhibiting PADI2 could prevent OSCC metastasis by impeding EMT and angiogenesis via AKT/mTOR signaling pathway. These results highlight PADI2 as a potential therapeutic target for combating OSCC metastasis.

Accumulating observational studies have linked particulate air pollutants to neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs). However, the causal links and the direction of their associations remain unclear. Therefore, we adopted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (TSMR) design using the GWAS-based genetic instruments of particulate air pollutants (PM2.5 and PM10) from the UK Biobank to explore their causal influence on four common neurodegenerative diseases. Estimates of causative relationships were generated by the Inverse variance weighted (IVW) method with multiple sensitive analyses. The heterogeneity and pleiotropy tests were additionally performed to verify whether our findings were robust. Genetically predicted PM2.5 and PM10 could elevate the occurrence of AD (odds ratio [OR] = 2.22, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.53-3.22, PIVW = 2.85×10-5, PFalsediscovery rate[FDR]= 2.85×10-4 and OR = 2.41, 95 % CI: 1.26-4.60, PIVW = 0.008, PFDR=0.039, respectively). The results were robust in sensitive analysis. However, no evidence of causality was found for other NDDs. Our present study suggests that PM2.5 and PM10 have a detrimental effect on AD, which indicates that improving air quality to prevent AD may have pivotal public health implications.

BACKGROUND: Gastric cancer (GC) is a common cancer worldwide; however, its molecular and pathogenic mechanisms remain unclear. MicroRNAs (miRNAs), which target key genes in GC, are associated with tumor promotion or suppression. Therefore, identifying new miRNA mechanisms could improve the novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for patients with GC. METHODS: To explore the biological functions of miR-135b-5p in GC, bioinformatic analysis and in vitro functional assays, including colony formation, wound healing, Transwell, and EdU assays, were used to assess the proliferative, invasive, and migratory capacities of GC cells. Target genes were predicted using RNA-seq and online databases. Dual-luciferase reporter assay, fluorescence in situ hybridization and western blotting were used to confirm the regulatory relationship between miR-135b-5p and CLIP4. The role of CLIP4 in tumor progression was assessed using clinical samples and both in vitro and in vivo assays. The tumor-suppressive mechanism of CLIP4 in GC was elucidated using rescue assays. RESULTS: Our study identified that miR-135b-5p as one of the top three over-expressed miRNAs in GC tissues, with RT-qPCR confirming its upregulation. Functional analysis showed that upregulated miR-135b-5p promoted malignant phenotypes in GC cells. Mechanistic research indicated that miR-135b-5p acts as a cancer promoter by targeting CLIP4. Moreover, our study suggested that CLIP4 exerts its tumor-suppressive function by inhibiting the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway. CONCLUSION: This study reveals a novel mechanism by which miR-135b-5p exerts its tumor-promoting functions by targeting CLIP4. The tumor-suppressive function of CLIP4 by inactivating the JAK2/STAT3 pathway is also elucidated. Regulatory mechanism of CLIP4 by miR-135b-5p provides a promising novel therapeutic strategy for GC patients.
