RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Improving the health of older individuals is the primary approach to dealing with the challenges of an aging population. Experiences during childhood can have a continual influence on individual health conditions. Consequently, understanding whether foster care experiences during childhood influence an individual's health during older age is relevant. METHOD: Data from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study, 2014, were collected. The influence of foster care experiences during childhood on health during older age was analyzed using the least-squares method. The mediating effects of childhood health status, education opportunities, and nutritional level were analyzed using the Karlson-Holm-Breen (KHB) method. RESULTS: Foster care experience during childhood was associated with reduced self-rated health status during older age due to adverse effects on (a) childhood health status, (b) childhood education opportunities, and (c) childhood nutritional level. CONCLUSIONS: The influences of early life factors on the health status of older adults should be analyzed from the perspective of the lifecycle to provide positive interventions for health improvement. The outcomes from such a study could help to improve the health condition of elderly citizens. (PsycInfo Database Record (c) 2024 APA, all rights reserved).

RESUMEN

This study proposed a scheme for improving people's health from the perspective of digital infrastructure construction. We used the China Family Panel Studies conducted between 2010 and 2020 and the digital infrastructure construction marked by the Broadband China policy between 2014 and 2016 as a quasi-natural experiment. We adopted the multi-time difference-in-differences method to identify the causal relationship between digital infrastructure and people's health. We found that digital infrastructure construction significantly improved people's health, and the effect was more prominent among young and middle-aged residents and those with less than a university education. Moreover, digital infrastructure construction improved the utilization of medical services, helped residents develop healthy lifestyles, and increased people's health investments. Additionally, digital infrastructure reduced health inequality among people and promoted health equity. The findings could guide future policies to improve people's health and well-being.

RESUMEN

Sea buckthorn peel is the by-product of the sea buckthorn processing, which contains many bioactive compounds. In this paper, sea buckthorn high methoxyl pectin (SBHMP) was obtained, with a yield of 8% and a light-colored. The SBHMP was a high methoxyl with a degree of esterification of 57.75% and uronic acid content of 65.35%. The structural and morphological characterization of SBHMP were analyzed by high-performance liquid chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Results showed that SBHMP presented a sheet and layered stacked morphological, and was mainly composed of galacturonic acid, arabinose, galactose, rhamnose, and mannose, which indicated that SBHMP mainly consisted of homogalacturonan (HG) and rhamnogalacturonan-I (RG-I) type pectin polysaccharides. In addition, SBHMP also presented significant gel, thickening, and emulsifying properties. The results exhibited that SBHMP could form jelly-like gels under acid and high sucrose conditions, presenting a shear-thinning behavior and increasing apparent viscosity with the enhancement of pectin and sucrose contents. Besides, SBHMP could form oil-in-water emulsions with pectin concentrations of 1.0-3.0%. When the SBHMP concentrations were 2.0 and 3.0%, the emulsions were stable during 7 days of storage. Findings in this paper demonstrated the potential of SBHMP to be a food thickener and emulsifier and support the in-depth utilization of sea buckthorn by-products.

RESUMEN

Sea buckthorn proanthocyanidins (SBP) are the most important antioxidant components of sea buckthorn, which are widely used in functional foods and cosmetics. Studies have shown that SBP have significant protective effects on macrophages against oxidative stress induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). However, the mechanism remains uncertain. In the present study, we explored the effects of SBP on mitochondrial function and the mechanism of their protective effects against oxidative stress in cells. Our results showed that SBP could increase mitochondrial membrane potential, inhibit mPTP opening, reduce mitochondrial swelling, and enhance mitochondrial synthesis and metabolism. Thus, they alleviated oxidative damage and protected the cells against mitochondrial function. Western blot analysis showed that SBP had a protective effect on RAW264.7 cells by activating the AMPK-PGC1α-Nrf2 pathway. These results showed that SBP alleviated mitochondrial damage and dysfunction caused by oxidative stress. This study revealed the mechanism of SBP in reducing oxidative damage and provided a theoretical basis for further research on natural bioactive compounds to exert antioxidant activity and prevent arteriosclerosis and other diseases.

RESUMEN

After extraction from jujube pomace and purification by two columns (DEAE-Sepharose Fast Flow and Sepharcyl S-300), the structure of SAZMP4 was investigated by HPGPC, GC, FI-IR, GC-MS, NMR, SEM, and AFM. Analysis determined that SAZMP4 (Mw = 28.94 kDa) was a pectic polysaccharide mainly containing 1,4-linked GalA (93.48%) with side chains of 1,2,4-linked Rha and 1,3,5-linked Ara and terminals of 1-linked Rha and 1-linked Ara, which might be the homogalacturonan (HG) type with side chains of the RG-I type, corresponding to the results of NMR. In AFM and SEM images, self-assembly and aggregation of SAZMP4 were respectively observed indicating its structural features. The antioxidant activity of SAZMP4 against H2O2-induced oxidative stress in Caco-2 cells was determined by activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) as well as malondialdehyde (MDA) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels, indicating SAZMP4 can be a natural antioxidant. Also, a better water retention capacity and thermal stability of SAZMP4 was observed based on DSC analysis, which could be applied in food industry as an additive.
