RESUMEN

High-performance sensors capable of detecting multidirectional strains are indispensable to understand the complex motions involved in flexible electronics. Conventional isotropic strain sensors can only measure uniaxial deformations or single stimuli, hindering their practical application fields. The answer to such challenge resides in the construction of engineered anisotropic sensing structures. Herein, a hierarchically aligned carbon nanofiber (CNF)/polydimethylsiloxane nanocomposite strain sensor is developed by one-step 3D printing. The precisely controlled printing path and shear flow bring about highly aligned nanocomposite filaments at macroscale and orientated CNF network within each filament at microscale. The periodically orientated nanocomposite filaments along with the inner aligned CNF network successfully control the strain distribution and the appearance of microcracks, giving rise to anisotropic structural response to external deformations. The synergetic effect of the multiscale structural design leads to distinguishable gauge factors of 164 and 0.5 for applied loadings along and transverse to the alignment direction, leading to an exceptional selectivity of 3.77. The real-world applications of the hierarchically aligned sensors in multiaxial movement detector and posture-correction device are further demonstrated. The above findings propose new ideas for manufacturing nanocomposites with engineered anisotropic structure and properties, verifying promising applications in emerging wearable electronics and soft robotics.

Electrolysis of infinite seawater is a promising and sustainable approach for clean hydrogen production. However, it remains a big challenge to accomplish corrosion-resistant and chlorine-free seawater electrolysis at low power input. Herein, the bimetallic nickel-iron sulfide-based electrocatalytic nanoarrays are constructed by a facile hydrothermal sulfidation of redox-etched iron foam (IF), which manifests an effective and reliable strategy for the sulfion oxidation reaction (SOR) to assist alkaline seawater electrolysis for the achievement of energy-saving hydrogen production and value-added sulfion upcycling. The resulting NiFeSx/FeNi3/IF required 0.353 and 0.415 V vs RHE for SOR at current densities of 50 and 100 mA cm-2, which are considerably lower than the theoretical potential of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER, 1.23 V vs RHE). In situ spectroscopy analysis demonstrated efficient sulfion oxidation on the surface of NiFeSx/FeNi3/IF. Furthermore, the NiFeSx/FeNi3/IF-assembled electrolyzer delivered a greatly reduced cell voltage of 0.92 V at 50 mA cm-2 and maintains excellent durability for 30 h, achieving high Faradaic efficiency for both hydrogen production and sulfion degradation. In addition, under natural sunlight (660.4 W m-2), only a 0.947 V voltage of the solar panel smoothly powers the SOR-coupled seawater electrolysis for green hydrogen production and economic sulfur recovery.

Ecological security pattern is an important spatial way to maintain ecological processes and ensure the stability of ecosystem functions. As the implementation of landscape planning and decision-making, it is critically needed to consider the consistency of differentiated methods and their spatial outputs in the construction of ecological security patterns and the matching and applicability of research objects. From the perspective of integration, we combined the regional topography and landscape characteristics, integrated the morphological spatial pattern analysis and the importance evaluation results of ecosystem services to identify the ecological source, and constructed the ecological security pattern of the Ansai District of Yan'an City, the main implementation area of the Grain-for-Green Project on the Loess Plateau. The results showed that the structural and functional construction methods had low consistency in the identification of spatial protection priority. The integration-oriented method could complement each other and achieve the dual goals of structural connectivity and functional improvement. There were 202 ecological sources in the study area, with a total area of 391.58 km2, accounting for 13.3% of the total area of the study area. There were 110 ecological corridors in the study area, with a total length of 599 km, which were mainly distributed around the river channel, showing a distribution pattern of 'short and narrow dense in the north and south, long and wide in the middle'. The structure-function integration method provides new insights for ecological restoration planning of land space and promotes the research of landscape pattern, process and service.

Rationale: Patients with hepatitis B virus-related acute-on-chronic liver failure (HBV-ACLF) have a high short-term mortality rate. Semaphorin-6B (SEMA6B) plays a crucial role in the pathogenesis of HBV-ACLF, but its molecular basis remains unclear. This study aimed to elucidate the mechanisms of SEMA6B in HBV-ACLF progression. Methods: A total of 321 subjects with HBV-ACLF, liver cirrhosis (LC), chronic hepatitis B (CHB), and normal controls (NC) from a prospective multicenter cohort were studied. 84 subjects (HBV-ACLF, n = 50; LC, n = 10; CHB, n = 10; NC, n = 14) among them underwent mRNA sequencing using peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) to clarify the mechanisms of SEMA6B in HBV-ACLF. These mechanisms were validated through in vitro studies with hepatocytes and macrophages, as well as in vivo using SEMA6B knockout mice and mice treated with synthetic SEMA6B siRNA. Results: Transcriptome analysis of PBMCs showed that SEMA6B was among the most differentially expressed genes when comparing patients with HBV-ACLF to those with LC, CHB, or NC. ROC analysis demonstrated the reliable diagnostic value of SEMA6B for HBV-ACLF in both the sequencing cohort and an external validation cohort (AUROC = 0.9788 and 0.9026, respectively). SEMA6B levels were significantly higher in the HBV-ACLF patients, especially in non-survivors, with high expression mainly observed in macrophages and hepatocytes in liver tissue. Genes significantly associated with highly expressed SEMA6B were enriched in inflammation and apoptosis pathways in HBV-ACLF non-survivors. Overexpression of SEMA6B in macrophages activated systemic inflammatory responses, while its overexpression in hepatocytes inhibited proliferation through G0/G1 cell cycle arrest and induced apoptosis. Knocking out SEMA6B rescued mice with liver failure by improving liver functions, reducing inflammatory responses, and decreasing hepatocyte apoptosis. Transcriptome analysis of liver tissue showed that SEMA6B knockout significantly ameliorated the liver failure signature, significantly downregulating inflammation-related pathways. Importantly, therapeutic delivery of synthetic SEMA6B siRNA also improved liver function, and reduced both inflammation and hepatocyte apoptosis in mice with liver failure. Conclusion: SEMA6B, a potential diagnostic biomarker for HBV-ACLF, exacerbates liver failure through macrophage-mediated systemic inflammation and hepatocyte apoptosis. These findings highlight SEMA6B as a promising early treatment target for HBV-ACLF patients.

Professionals and academics have recently placed a greater emphasis on comprehending the elements that go into improving students' psychological wellbeing. Students frequently face major obstacles as a result of the rigorous nature of academic life, which can result in problems like tension, depression and other psychological health concerns. These complications have a long-lasting influence on their future aspirations in addition to affecting their academic achievement. This study determined the effects of music learning on students' academic performance and psychological well-being. The mediating role of self-efficacy and self-esteem are also examined in this study. The data is collected from 326 students in Chinese universities and applied structural equation modeling for empirical analysis. The findings show that music education improves the students' psychological well-being, which in turn improves their academic performance. Additionally, psychological health is a major factor in improving the academic performance. There is significant mediating impact of self-efficacy and self-esteem in relationship between mental well-being and music education. To improve students' psychological health, it is suggested that policy makers should consider the integration of music education into academic settings.

Inserting an insulating layer between the charge transport layer (CTL) and quantum dot emitting layer (QDL) is widely used in improving the performance of quantum dot light-emitting diodes (QLEDs). However, the additional layer inevitably leads to energy loss and joule heat. Herein, a monolayer silane coupling agent is used to modify the said interfaces via the self-limiting adsorption effect. Because the ultrathin layers induce negligible series resistance to the device, they can partially passivate the interfacial defects on the electron transport side and help confine the electrons within the QDL on the hole transport side. These interfacial modifications can not only suppress the nonradiative recombination but also slow down the aging of the hole transport layer. The findings here underline a low-temperature adsorption-based strategy for effective interfacial modification which can be used in any layer-by-layer device structures.

Keymessage The study revealed the major biological processes occurred at three developmental stages and identified candidate genes involved in primary vein development of birch plants. Vascular tissues usually mirror the surrounding leaf shape and its development plays a fundamental role in plant performance. However, the information of vascular development in birch trees, especially primary vein development, remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted the anatomical observation on primary veins from leaves at different development stages in Betula pendula 'Dalecarlica'. With the development of primary vein, dynamic changes in mechanical tissue thickness and primary vein diameter were consistent with each other, and the sum of phloem, xylem and cambium thickness was significantly varied. Transcriptome analysis indicated that primary vein development could be divided into three stages, namely Stage I, II and III, which were in aggreement with anatomical observation. Expression of marker genes associated with vascular tissues revealed that pro-vasculature development occurred at Stage I and II, and phloem development occurred at Stage III. GO enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) showed that shared DEGs at Stage II were mainly engaged in cell division and cell cycle, and shared DEGs at Stage III were mainly engaged in phosphorylation. Decreased cell division and cell cycle as well as activation of lignin biosynthesis might contribute to primary vein development. Combining phenotypic traits, we performed weighted gene co-expression network analysis and identified a cytochrome P450 84A (CYP84A) family gene (BpF5H1). Based on analyses of gene families, expression patterns and yeast-two hybrid assay results, we proposed a potential electron transfer pathway involving BpF5H1 and three cytochrome b5 proteins during primary vein development in B. pendula 'Dalecarlica'. These results could shed some light on which biological processes occurred during primary vein formation and provide some valuable clues for vascular morphogenesis in woody plants.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Union Physio-Psycho-Social Assessment Questionnaire (UPPSAQ-70) among general hospital psychiatric outpatients. METHODS: A total of 2000 participants responded to the survey. Factor analyses were used to test the construct validity of the scale. Convergent validity was evaluated by the correlation between UPPSAQ-70 and symptoms measured using the Chinese versions of Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS), Patient Health Questionnaire-15 (PHQ-15), Somatic Symptom Disorder - B Criteria Scale (SSD-12) and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). RESULTS: The nine-factor model was supported (χ2 = 8816.395, df = 2309, χ2/df = 3.818, RMSEA = 0.053, CFI = 0.929). The UPPSAQ-70 showed significant correlation with the SAS (r = 0.396, P < .001), SDS (r = 0.451, P < .001), PHQ-15 (r = 0.381, P < .001), SSD-12 (r = 0.324, P < .001) and PSQI (r = 0.220, P < .001). UPPSAQ-70 and its subscales showed good internal consistency with Cronbach's alpha coefficients ranging from 0.79 to 0.96. CONCLUSIONS: The UPPSAQ-70 was a rating scale with good construct validity and reliability, which can measure overall health in the biological, psychological, and social domains for Chinese psychiatric outpatients, but its convergent validity still requires further empirical research.

In this study, we redefine the diagnostic landscape of diabetic ulcers (DUs), a major diabetes complication. Our research uncovers new biomarkers linked to immunogenic cell death (ICD) in DUs by utilizing RNA-sequencing data of Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) analysis combined with a comprehensive database interrogation. Employing a random forest algorithm, we have developed a diagnostic model that demonstrates improved accuracy in distinguishing DUs from normal tissue, with satisfactory results from ROC analysis. Beyond mere diagnosis, our model categorizes DUs into novel molecular classifications, which may enhance our comprehension of their underlying pathophysiology. This study bridges the gap between molecular insights and clinical practice. It sets the stage for transformative strategies in DUs management, marking a significant step forward in personalized medicine for diabetic patients.

BACKGROUND: Keratoconus (KC) is a corneal ectasia disease in which the vision of some patients cannot achieve satisfaction by spectacle corrections. However, not everyone can embrace contact lenses to achieve better vision. Perceptual learning (PL) is a potential treatment for vision improvement in such patients. PURPOSE: To investigate the effectiveness and maintenance of PL on vision improvement in KC patients corrected with spectacles. DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Thirty-five non-progressive KC patients aged 9 years or older with unsatisfied spectacle-corrected vision were enrolled. METHODS: Non-progressive KC patients with best spectacle-corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) of 0 to 1.0 logMAR (Snellen equivalent range 20/20 to 20/200) and contact lenses intolerant were enrolled. Eligible subjects were randomized into PL and control groups to receive PL and placebo training for 3 months, respectively. Spectacle-corrected visual acuity, contrast sensitivity function (CSF), stereoacuity, and visual functioning and quality of life questionnaires were measured at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months of follow-up. Statistics were analyzed following the intention-to-treat (ITT) principle. RESULTS: After 3 months of training, the CDVA of patients in the PL group improved as compared to the placebo group (0.17 ± 0.15 logMAR vs. 0.02 ± 0.06 logMAR; P = 0.0006). Eight out of seventeen (47.06 %) patients in the PL group reached CDVA improvement ≥ 2 lines (P=0.0010). This improvement persisted for at least 6 months (from baseline) as compared to the placebo group (0.17 ± 0.17 logMAR vs. 0.01 ± 0.07 logMAR; P = 0.0011). The increase of CSF in the PL group mainly was found for moderate spatial frequency (0.11 ± 0.17 log units at 3 cpd; 0.12 ± 0.19 log units at 6 cpd). Linear regression indicated that patients with worse initial CDVA achieved better gains in CDVA after PL (P = 0.009). No side effects were observed and no subjects quit because of training difficulties. CONCLUSION: Three-month perceptual learning improved vision in KC patients and the improvement maintained after 3 months of treatment cessation. The results indicate that perceptual learning may be a promising therapy for KC patients with unsatisfied spectacle-corrected visual acuity.

BACKGROUND: The precise function of Tolloid Like 2 (TLL2) remains uncertain within the context of Lung Adenocarcinoma (LUAD). OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this investigation was to conduct a thorough analysis. METHODS: To assess its diagnostic utility, data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database were used to assess TLL2 expression in pan-cancer and LUAD. The study has also investigated the correlation between TLL2 expression levels and LUAD symptoms and prognosis. Furthermore, the study has explored possible regulatory networks involving TLL2, including its association with immune infiltration, tumor stemness index (mRNAsi), and drug sensitivity in LUAD. We have explored TLL2 expression in single-cell sequencing of LUAD and the genomic variation and clinical significance of TLL2 in LUAD. The expression of TLL2 has been validated in GSE87340 and cell lines by quantitative Real-time PCR (qRT-PCR). RESULTS: An abnormal expression of TLL2 has been found in pan-cancer and LUAD. In LUAD patients, elevated levels of TLL2 were significantly related to the T stage (p = 0.046) and the pathological stage (p = 0.016). The expression of TLL2 in patients with LUAD was significantly associated with poorer Overall Survival (OS) (p < 0.001). The expression of TLL2 was determined to be an independent predictor of poorer OS (p = 0.042). TLL2 was associated with ribosome, neuroactive ligand-receptor interaction, allograft rejection, ECM receptor interaction, asthma, porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, focal adhesion, pentose and glucuronate inter-conversions, and ascorbate and aldarate metabolism. The expression of TLL2 in LUAD was correlated with immune infiltration and mRNAsi. The expression of TLL2 was significantly and negatively correlated with TAK-715, XMD13-2, STF-62247, OSI-930, and EHT-1864 in LUAD. The TLL2 gene was up- -regulated in multiple individual LUAD cells. LUAD patients with altered TLL2 had a shorter PFS as opposed to those with unaltered TLL2. The expression of TLL2 was significantly increased in LUAD cells. CONCLUSION: For patients with LUAD, TLL2 may serve as an immunotherapeutic target and a useful prognosis biomarker.

The dose-response of intravenous lidocaine in preventing postoperative vomiting (POV) in children remains unclear. This study investigated whether intravenous lidocaine dose-dependently decreased POV risk within 24 h postoperatively in children undergoing tonsillectomy (with or without adenoidectomy) without severe complications. Patients aged 3-12 years (American Society of Anesthesiologists grade I-II) scheduled for elective tonsillectomy (with or without adenoidectomy) were enroled from December 2021 to March 2022. They were randomly grouped according to the lidocaine dose (A [0 mg kg-1], B [1 mg kg-1], C [1.5 mg kg-1], and D [2 mg kg-1]) and were administered the same induction protocol (sufentanil, propofol, and suxamethonium chloride). Anaesthesia was maintained with sevoflurane. The incidence of POV within 24 h postoperatively was 46, 40, 36, and 20% in groups A, B, C, and D, respectively, with significant differences between groups D and A. Postoperative analgesic rescues in groups A, B, C, and D were 62, 36, 34, and 16%, respectively, with significant differences between groups D and B, C and A, and D and A. No severe adverse events were reported. Intravenous lidocaine has a dose-dependent effect on reducing the risk of POV in children undergoing tonsillectomy (with or without adenoidectomy) without serious adverse events.Trial registration: Chinese Clinical Trial Registry, ChiCTR2100053006.

Liquid porosimetry experiments reveal a peculiar trend of the intrusion pressure of water in hydrophobic Cu2(3,3',5,5'-tetraethyl-4,4'-bipyrazolate) MOF. At lower temperature (T) range, the intrusion pressure (Pi) increases with T. For higher T values, Pi first reaches a maximum and then decreases. This is at odds with the Young-Laplace law, which for systems showing a continuous decrease of contact angle with T predicts a corresponding reduction of the intrusion pressure. Though the Young-Laplace law is not expected to provide quantitative predictions at the subnanoscale of Cu2(tebpz) pores, the physical intuition suggests that to a reduction of their hydrophobicity corresponds a reduction of the Pi. Molecular dynamics simulations and sychrothron experiments allowed to clarify the mechanism of the peculiar trend of Pi with T. At increasing temperatures the vapor density within the MOF' pores grows significantly, bringing the corresponding partial pressure to ≈5 MPa. This pressure, which is consistent with the shift of Pi observed in liquid porosimetry, represents a threshold to be overcame before intrusion takes place. Beyond some value of temperature, the phenomenon of reduction of hydrophobicity (and water surface tension) dominated over the opposite effect of increase of vapor pressure and Pi inverts its trend with T.

The advancement of the aviation sector has made the temperature measurement technology for aero-engine turbine blades essential for maintaining the engine's safe and steady performance. The non-contact temperature measurement technology is a trending research focus in turbine blade temperature measurement due to its benefits of not requiring direct touch with the object being measured and its suitability for high-temperature and high-speed conditions. This paper provides a concise overview of various key non-contact temperature measurement methods for aero-engines, such as fluorescence temperature measurement, fiber-optic temperature measurement, and radiation temperature measurement. It discusses the temperature measurement principle, technical characteristics, and the current research status both domestically and internationally. Based on this, this Review further discusses the main challenges faced by the non-contact temperature measurement technology and the development trend of the future.

One challenge for gas sensors is humidity interference, as dynamic humidity conditions can cause unpredictable fluctuations in the response signal to analytes, increasing quantitative detection errors. Here, we introduce a concept: Select humidity sensors from a pool to compensate for the humidity signal for each gas sensor. In contrast to traditional methods that extremely suppress the humidity response, the sensor pool allows for more accurate gas quantification across a broader range of application scenarios by supplying customized, high-dimensional humidity response data as extrinsic compensation. As a proof-of-concept, mitigation of humidity interference in colorimetric gas quantification was achieved in three steps. First, across a ten-dimensional variable space, an algorithm-driven high-throughput experimental robot discovered multiple local optimum regions where colorimetric humidity sensing formulations exhibited high evaluations on sensitivity, reversibility, response time, and color change extent for 10-90% relative humidity (RH) in room temperature (25 °C). Second, from the local optimum regions, 91 sensing formulations with diverse variables were selected to construct a parent colorimetric humidity sensor array as the sensor pool for humidity signal compensation. Third, the quasi-optimal sensor subarrays were identified as customized humidity signal compensation solutions for different gas sensing scenarios across an approximately full dynamic range of humidity (10-90% RH) using an ingenious combination optimization strategy, and two accurate quantitative detections were attained: one with a mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) reduction from 4.4 to 0.75% and the other from 5.48 to 1.37%. Moreover, the parent sensor array's excellent humidity selectivity was validated against 10 gases. This work demonstrates the feasibility and superiority of robot-assisted construction of a customizable parent colorimetric sensor array to mitigate humidity interference in gas quantification.

Blastocystis is a common intestinal protist in humans and animals. Currently, Blastocystis infection in bar-headed geese is unknown. To understand the prevalence and distribution of Blastocystis subtypes in bar-headed geese, fecal samples were collected from 358 bar-headed geese in three regions. The total infection rate of Blastocystis in bar-headed in China was 5.9% (21/358), with 5.0% (6/120) in Aba (Ngawa) Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefect, Sichuan province, 11.8% (14/119) in Maqu county, Gansu province, and 0.8% (1/119) in Caohai, Wei ning county, Guizhou province. The differences in prevalence rates by region were statistically significant. Sequences analyses showed that one known subtype (ST7, n = 16) and one potentially novel ST (n = 5) in bar-headed geese were detected in this study. This is the first report on the prevalence and subtype distribution of Blastocystis in bar-headed geese, which will improve our understanding of the epidemiology and public health implications of Blastocystis infection in wild migratory birds.

Anti-interferon-γ autoantibodies (AIGAs) syndrome is susceptible to disseminated opportunistic infections due to increased AIGAs, but its clinical immunological characteristics remain unrecognized. We conducted a prospective cohort study between January 2021 and December 2023, recruiting patients with opportunistic infections who were categorized into AIGAs-positive and AIGAs-negative groups. Clinical immunological data and outcomes were documented. A subset of AIGAs-positive patients received glucocorticoid treatment, and its effectiveness was evaluated. A total of 238 patients were enrolled, with 135 AIGAs-positive and 103 AIGAs-negative patients. AIGAs-positive patients showed higher rates of multiple pathogen dissemination, shorter progression-free survival (PFS), and increased exacerbation frequency. They also showed elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), globulin (GLB), immunoglobulin (Ig)G, IgE, and IgG4 levels. Among the 70 AIGAs-positive patients monitored for at least six months, three subtypes were identified: high AIGAs titer with immune damage, high AIGAs titer without immune damage, and low AIGAs titer without immune damage. Of the 55 patients followed for 1 year, decreasing AIGAs titer and immune indices (GLB, IgG, IgE, IgG4) were observed. Among the 31 patients with high AIGAs titer and immune damage treated with low-dose glucocorticoids at the stable phase, reductions were observed in immune indices and AIGAs titer in 67.74% of cases. In summary, AIGAs-positive patients exhibit infectious and immunological characteristics. Elevated AIGAs, IgG, IgG4, and IgE indicate abnormal immune damages. AIGAs titer generally decrease over time. Stable-phase AIGAs-positive patients can be categorized into three subtypes, with those having high AIGAs titer and increased immune indices potentially benefitting from glucocorticoid treatment.

What is already known about this topic?: Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and ozone (O3) are prevalent pollutants in the atmosphere, which threaten human health, especially the respiratory system. Typically, people are exposed to a mixture of various pollutants in the environment. Thus, the single and combined effects of both pollutants need to be investigated. What is added by this report?: PM2.5 and O3 increase the risk of death from lung cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and respiratory diseases, with their lagged and cumulative effects analyzed, indicating an acute effect. In addition, combined exposure to both pollutants can significantly affect disease deaths. What are the implications for public health practice?: This study provides further evidence of the single and combined effects of PM2.5 and O3 on respiratory diseases, emphasizing the need for sustained efforts in air pollution control, with greater attention to the synergistic management of air pollutants.

DNA methylation (DNAm) has been implicated in acute coronary syndrome (ACS), but the causality remains unclear in cross-sectional studies. Here, we conduct a prospective epigenome-wide association study of incident ACS in two Chinese cohorts (discovery: 751 nested case-control pairs; replication: 476 nested case-control pairs). We identified and validated 26 differentially methylated positions (DMPs, false discovery rate [FDR] <0.05), including three mapped to known cardiovascular disease genes (PRKCZ, PRDM16, EHBP1L1) and four with causal evidence from Mendelian randomization (PRKCZ, TRIM27, EMC2, EHBP1L1). Two hypomethylated DMPs were negatively correlated with the expression in blood of their mapped genes (PIGG and EHBP1L1), which were further found to overexpress in leukocytes and/or atheroma plaques. Finally, our DMPs could substantially improve the prediction of ACS over traditional risk factors and polygenic scores. These findings demonstrate the importance of DNAm in the pathogenesis of ACS and highlight DNAm as potential predictive biomarkers and treatment targets.

Background: This study presents real-world evidence on the clinical outcomes of the Alberta Complementary Health Integration Project (ABCHIP), which utilized acupuncture to address pain and mental health issues in two vulnerable populations in Alberta: youth (aged 24 and below) and elderly (aged 55 and above). Methods: Over 282 days, a total of 606 patients received 5,424 acupuncture treatments. Tailored to each patients' specific pain and mental health concerns, an individualized treatment plan was selected, following a standard treatment protocol lasting 1 to 3 months. Patients were evaluated at least twice: initially and upon completing therapy. Primary treatment outcomes were assessed using various measures, including the Brief Pain Inventory (BPI), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), Patient Health Questionnaire 9 (PHQ9), PROMIS Anxiety 8a and its pediatric form PROMIS Anxiety-Pediatric, PROMIS Short Form v1.0 Fatigue 8a and its pediatric counterpart PROMIS Pediatric Short Form v2.0 Fatigue 10a, PROMIS Short Form v1.1 Anger 5a and its version PROMIS SF v2.0 5a, and EQ-5D-5L. These measures gauged pain reduction, improved sleep quality, reduced depression, anxiety, fatigue, anger, and quality of life, respectively. Results: Analysis of data from 500 patients who received at least 6 acupuncture sessions through ABCHIP showed statistically significant improvements in clinical outcomes. Among this group, the subgroup of 235 patients who received at least 12 sessions demonstrated the most favorable treatment outcomes, including an 75.5% reduction in pain severity, a 53.1% improvement in sleep quality, a 78.4% drop in depression, a 41.1% decline in anxiety, a 43.7% decrease in fatigue, a 38.2% decrease in anger, and a 42.6% improvement in overall quality of life. Conclusion: Integrating acupuncture with usual care demonstrates promise in enhancing mental health, alleviating chronic and general pain, and improving overall quality of life. The findings suggest that integrative programs, such as ABCHIP, present an effective approach to addressing pain and mental health concerns in vulnerable populations, providing valuable insights for future healthcare interventions.
