RESUMEN

A new method for in situ measurement of the thickness of the carbon contamination layer on the surface of an extreme ultraviolet (EUV) mirror is proposed. This measurement is important in order to determine the most effective timing with which the mirror should be cleaned. The method we propose uses a Y-type optical fiber to measure the reflectivity profile over the wavelength range from 200 nm to 800 nm from the surface of the mirror; the reflectivity profile is normalized by the reflectivity at 800 nm wavelength. This is because the change in reflectivity is more sensitive to the carbon layer thickness in the short wavelength region rather than in the long wavelength region. The method was demonstrated using carbon/ruthenium bilayer samples deposited on commercial Si wafers. The results show that the proposed method can successfully estimate the thickness of the carbon layer and thus has the potential to measure the thickness of a thin carbon layer on an EUV mirror.

RESUMEN

We have developed a soft x-ray laser (SXRL) beamline equipped with an intensity monitor dedicated to ablation study such as surface processing and damage formation. The SXRL beam having a wavelength of 13.9 nm, pulse width of 7 ps, and pulse energy of around 200 nJ is generated from Ag plasma mediums using an oscillator-amplifier configuration. The SXRL beam is focused onto the sample surface by the Mo/Si multilayer coated spherical mirror. To get the correct irradiation energy/fluence, an intensity monitor composed of a Mo/Si multilayer beam splitter and an x-ray charge-coupled device camera has been installed in the beamline. The Mo/Si multilayer beam splitter has a large polarization dependence in the reflectivity around the incident angle of 45°. However, by evaluating the relationship between reflectivity and transmittance of the beam splitter appropriately, the irradiation energy onto the sample surface can be derived from the energy acquired by the intensity monitor. This SXRL beamline is available to not only the ablation phenomena but also the performance evaluation of soft x-ray optics and resists.

RESUMEN

An experimental demonstration of a wide-range narrowband multilayer mirror for selecting a single-order high-harmonic (HH) beam from multiple-order harmonics in the photon energy range between 40 eV and 70 eV was carried out. This extreme ultraviolet (XUV) mirror, based on a pair of Zr and Al0.7Si0.3 multilayers, has a reflectivity of 20-35% and contrast of more than 7 with respect to neighboring HHs at angles of incidence from 10 to 56.9 degrees, assuming HHs pumped at 1.55 eV. Thus, specific single-order harmonic beams can be arbitrarily selected from multiple-order harmonics in this photo energy range. In addition, the dispersion for input pulses of the order of 1 fs is negligible. This simple-to-align optical component is useful for the many various applications in physics, chemistry and biology that use ultrafast monochromatic HH beams.

RESUMEN

We describe the design and fabrication of a ruthenium beam separator used to simultaneously attenuate infrared light and reflect soft x rays. Measurements in the infrared and soft x-ray regions showed the beam separator to have a reflectivity of 50%-85% in the wavelength region from 6 to 10 nm at a grazing incidence angle of 7.5 deg and 4.3% at 800 nm and the same angle of grazing incidence, indicating that the amount of attenuation is 0.05-0.09. These results show that this beam separator could provide an effective means for separating IR light from soft x rays in light generated by high-order harmonic generation sources.

RESUMEN

We propose a new type of collecting mirror assembly (CMA) for x rays, which will enable us to build a powerful optical system for collecting x rays from large divergence sources. The CMA consists of several mirror sections connected in series. The angle of each section is designed so that the x rays reflected from it are parallel to the x rays directly incident on the following sections. A simplified CMA structure is designed and applied to the Al-Kα emission line. It is estimated that by using the CMA the number of x rays detected could be increased by a factor of about 2.5.

RESUMEN

The experimental procedure for obtaining the point spread function (PSF) of a focusing beam generated using an X-ray multilayer zone plate (MZP) with a narrow annular aperture has been developed. It was possible to reconstruct the PSF by applying the tomographic process to the measured dataset consisting of line spread functions (LSFs) in every radial direction on the focal plane. The LSFs were measured by a knife-edge scanning method of detecting scattered intensity. In the experimental work, quasi-monochromatic undulator radiation with a first harmonic energy of 20 keV was directly focused without a monochromator by the MZP, and the PSF was measured using this procedure. As a result, a near diffraction-limited focused beam size of 46 nm full width at half-maximum was obtained.

RESUMEN

A circular multilayer zone plate (MZP) was fabricated and its focusing performance was evaluated using 20-keV x-rays. MoSi(2) and Si layers were alternately deposited by DC magnetron sputtering on a wire core; all the interfaces satisfied the Fresnel zone condition. The measured line spread function was converted to a point spread function by tomographic reconstruction. The results suggest that the MZP has the potential to realize the diffraction-limited resolving power, which is calculated to be 35 nm using the diffraction integral. Furthermore, scanning transmission microscopy using the MZP could resolve a 50-nm line-and-space pattern.

RESUMEN

We briefly report on the performance and stability of periodic multilayer mirrors containing Y(2)O(3) and Al layers designed for normal incidence reflection at the He-II emission line (30.4 nm). We found that Y(2)O(3)∕Al multilayer coatings had higher reflectivity (24.9%) at 30.4 nm and significantly lower reflectivity (1.3%) at 58.4 nm than the conventional coatings such as Mo∕Si. Furthermore, we investigated the temporal stability of the Y(2)O(3)∕Al multilayer coatings. Our sample was kept under vacuum, dry N(2) purge, and normal atmosphere for over three months, and there were no measurable changes in the reflectivity. These results suggest that we can use Y(2)O(3)∕Al multilayer coatings as standard mirrors for the He-II radiation.

RESUMEN

The present study was undertaken to examine the effect of rosiglitazone, a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor (PPAR)-gamma agonist, using different administration methods, on rat myocardial infarct size induced by 30 min of ischemia followed by 4 h of reperfusion. The infarct size was significantly reduced by the continuous infusion of rosiglitazone (0.5 mg/kg/h) from 30 min before occlusion for 2 h. On the other hand, limitation of the infarct size was shown by a bolus injection of 0.75 mg/kg at 5 min before reperfusion, but not by a bolus injection of 1 mg at 30 min before occlusion. The protective effect of rosiglitazone by the bolus injection before occlusion was obtained when an antioxidant, N-acetylcysteine, was concomitantly administered. The cardioprotection by rosiglitazone was associated with the inhibition of increased myeloperoxidase activity, tumor necrosis factor-alpha content and phosphorylation of inhibitor kappaB in the myocardium. The present study demonstrated that the protective effect of rosiglitazone on myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury occurred most likely by inhibition of the nuclear factor-kappaB pathway through PPAR-gamma activation. However, acute treatment with rosiglitazone is harmful if its concentration is high during ischemia.

RESUMEN

Reactive oxygen species have been known as important contributors to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Studies on the beneficial effect of N-acetylcysteine (NAC), a potent antioxidant, on limiting infarct size induced by I/R yielded contrasting results. The present study was undertaken to compare the effect of NAC by different administration methods on infarct size in a rat myocardial I/R model. Rats underwent 30 min of left coronary occlusion followed by 4 h of reperfusion. Treatment with continuous infusion of NAC (150 mg/kg per hour) from 30 min before occlusion for 2 h (until 1 h after the start of reperfusion) produced a significant limitation of the infarct size as a percentage of the ischemic area (8%) compared to the non-treated control (60%). However, bolus injection of 150 mg/kg at 30 min prior to occlusion and 5 min prior to reperfusion failed to reduce it (56%) although the total dose is the same. The decreased total glutathione content and glutathione peroxidase activity in the ischemic region were recovered in the continuous infusion group, but not in the bolus injection group. The increased myeloperoxidase activity and phosphorylation of inhibitor kappaB after I/R were inhibited by the continuous treatment. These results indicate that the protective effect of NAC on myocardial infarction induced by I/R was different depending on the administration method. It is necessary to maintain blood concentration during the early period of reperfusion to obtain the beneficial effect of NAC.

RESUMEN

Reflection measurements in the 25-35 nm region were made for Mg/SiC and Mg/Y2O3 multilayers kept in a low-humidity atmosphere for 4 or 5 years. Aged Mg/SiC multilayers keep their reflectances, and the reflectance value at 31.2 nm is 0.44 at 10 degrees of the normal angle of incidence. Aged Mg/Y2O3 multilayers change reflectance as top layer materials, and the best value at 30.1 nm is 0.40 at 10 degrees. Reflection measurements are also made for Mg-based multilayers that are annealed from room temperature to 400 degrees C at 50 degrees C intervals. Both multilayers keep their reflectance at annealing temperatures of 200 degrees C. These results suggest that both Mg-based multilayers can be applied to practical optics.

RESUMEN

A hard-x-ray telescope is successfully produced for balloon observations by making use of depth-graded multilayers, or so-called supermirrors, with platinum-carbon (Pt/C) layer pairs. It consists of four quadrant units assembled in an optical configuration with a diameter of 40 cm and a focal length of 8 m. Each quadrant is made of 510 pieces of coaxially and confocally aligned supermirrors that significantly enhance the sensitivity in an energy range of 20-40 keV. The configuration of the telescope is similar to the x-ray telescope onboard Astro-E, but with a longer focal length. The reflectivity of supermirrors is of the order of 40% in the energy range concerned at a grazing angle of 0.2 deg. The effective area of a fully assembled telescope is 50 cm2 at 30 keV. The angular resolution is 2.37 arc min at half-power diameter 8.0 keV. The field of view is 12.6 arc min in the hard-x-ray region, depending somewhat on x-ray energies. We discuss these characteristics, taking into account the figure errors of reflectors and their optical alignment in the telescope assembly. This hard-x-ray telescope is unanimously afforded in the International Focusing Optics Collaboration for muCrab Sensitivity balloon experiment.
