RESUMEN

Seven autopsies and one clinical case of a syndrome known as the Vomiting Sickness of Jamaica are described. In these cases hypoglycaemia was associated with fatty metamorphosis of the liver and other organs, tissue oedema, and ailmentary lymphoid hyperplasia. During the acute phase biopsies and post mortem material show a depletion of liver glycogen. Evidence is presented that restoration can take place by intravenous glucose therapy. The mechanism of the change is discussed and it is suggested that the defect may be one of deficient gluconeogenesis. (AU)

RESUMEN

In 49 consecutive autopsies on infants and children with and without manifest symptoms of protein malnutrition, the pancreatic changes were tabulated. Fibrosis and apparent increase in intercalated ducts were not seen except in patients with clinical signs of kwashiorkor and marasmus. Other findings however such as atrophy, loss of zymogen granules and widening of ducts were commonly seen in the control group. In the latter, 70 percent of cases who had fatty matamorphosis of the liver, also showed histopathological changes in the pancreas. The fat in this group, however showed no predilection for any part of the liver lobule, as contrasted to kwashiorkor, where this is a well documented feature. The possibility that these pancreatic changes, though not correlated with clinical signs of kwashiorkor, might still be related to undernutrition as evidenced by retardation in develoment (height and weight), is evaluated.(Summary)

RESUMEN

Four more cases of chromomycosis in Jamaica are described. One case exhibited the classical picture of verrucous nodules, plaques and cauliflower growths. Two other cases showed a pseudo-epitheliomatous picture. The fourth case showed the not uncommon 'mossy foot' appearance. The pleomorphism of the clinical picture is emphasized and treatment by surgery with skin grafting is recommended. The opinion is expressed that the disease is not as uncommon in Jamaica as was once thought (AU)

RESUMEN

The case of abdominal actinomycosis is, as far as we are aware, the first to be recorded from Jamaica. In addition, no reports on the occurrence of gangrene of the scrotum are known from this island. The presence of a member of the family, Pseudomonadaceae, which is at present under study is intriguing. Its possible role as the cause of the gangrene is discussed (AU)
