ABSTRACT
In 49 consecutive autopsies on infants and children with and without manifest symptoms of protein malnutrition, the pancreatic changes were tabulated. Fibrosis and apparent increase in intercalated ducts were not seen except in patients with clinical signs of kwashiorkor and marasmus. Other findings however such as atrophy, loss of zymogen granules and widening of ducts were commonly seen in the control group. In the latter, 70 percent of cases who had fatty matamorphosis of the liver, also showed histopathological changes in the pancreas. The fat in this group, however showed no predilection for any part of the liver lobule, as contrasted to kwashiorkor, where this is a well documented feature. The possibility that these pancreatic changes, though not correlated with clinical signs of kwashiorkor, might still be related to undernutrition as evidenced by retardation in develoment (height and weight), is evaluated.(Summary)
