Objectives: The study aimed to explore the spectrum and trend of causative microbial agents and to identify management challenges and the risk factors for poor outcomes in patients with confirmed otogenic skull base osteomyelitis. Methods: A retrospective observational study was conducted at a tertiary-care academic center from 1999 through 2019 and included 28 adult patients with confirmed otogenic skull base osteomyelitis. Relevant data was extracted from electronic and hard patient medical files. The microbial spectrum of involved microbes was identified and correlated to management options. Deterioration risk factors were investigated using suitable statistical analysis tests. Results: Twenty-eight patients with confirmed skull base osteomyelitis were included; most were males (78.6%) and Saudis (78.6%). All patients were ≥50 years of age (mean ± SD is 69.0±10.2.4). Of 41 identified microbial isolates, 56% were bacterial, 44% were fungal. 32.1% of patients had polymicrobial infections, most patients (92.8%) had received ≥2 systemic antibiotics, 57.1% received systemic antibiotic combinations, and 32.1% underwent surgical interventions. The mean antibiotic and antifungal therapy duration was 58.3 and 45.8 days, respectively. The identified risk factors of deterioration were advanced age and concomitant cardiac failure, with P-values of .006 and .034, respectively. Conclusions: The study findings highlight the microbiological spectrum and trend of otogenic skull base osteomyelitis-causative microbes over two decades, present the management challenges, identify deterioration risk factors, and suggest tissue biopsy as the golden standard for accurately identifying causative microbes.

BACKGROUND: Pediatric Sleep Questionnaire (PSQ) is a valid, reliable tool for screening for sleep-related breathing disorders (SRBDs) translated into several languages since 2000. The diagnostic accuracy of an Arabic version of the PSQ has never been tested. Our aim was to translate the original version of PSQ into Arabic (Arabic-PSQ), validate it as a reliable screening tool, and compare it to the gold standard diagnostic method for SRBDs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a prospective longitudinal study of 54 children (2-14 years) who were to undergo polysomnography (PSG). SRBD was assessed by administering the Arabic version of PSQ to the parents of these children. The validity and reliability of the Arabic-PSQ were assessed. Data were analyzed using Stata 16. Correlation between with polysomnographic indices and PSQ scores, as well as measurement of the diagnostic accuracy were determined. Receiver operating characteristic analysis between the mean PSQ scores and binary PSG results was done and the area under curve (AUC) value was calculated. RESULTS: Thirty-four (63%) children were diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea by PSG (Apnea-Hypopnea Index [AHI] ≥1), 26 of whom were accurately identified with the Arabic-PSQ (76.5%). Arabic-PSQ showed comparable validity and reliability. Using a cutoff of 0.33, the score showed a significant correlation with AHI: Rs: 0.30 (P = 0.029). The sensitivity was 76.5%, the specificity was 50%, the positive predictive was 72.2%, the negative predictive value was 55.6%, the positive likelihood ratio was 1.63, and the negative likelihood ratio was 0.37. CONCLUSIONS: The Arabic-PSQ is a valid tool for the screening of Arabic-speaking populations for SRBD. It is valuable for directing the diagnostic approach in a timely and cost-effective manner.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory distress and failure is a complication of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and tracheostomy may be necessary in cases of prolonged intubation in order to reduce mechanical ventilation duration. However, according to the Canadian Society of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery guidelines, which our institution applies, patients should not undergo tracheostomy unless cleared of the virus to reduce its spread among healthcare workers because tracheostomy is an aerosolized procedure. This study aimed to identify the outcomes of prolonged intubation in patients with and without COVID-19 who underwent tracheostomy and to determine the morbidity and mortality rates in both groups. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included adult patients admitted to the intensive care unit of King Fahad Hospital of the University, Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia, between March 1 and October 31, 2020. This study compared and analyzed the outcomes of delayed tracheostomy in patients with and without COVID-19 in terms of complication, morbidity, and mortality rates. RESULTS: Of the 228 study participants, 111 (48.68%) had COVID-19. The mean age of the study participants was 58.67 years (SD = 17.36, max.=93, min.=20), and the majority were males (n = 149, 65.35%). Regarding tracheostomy in patients with COVID-19, 11 (9.91%) patients underwent tracheostomy; however, four (36.36%) of them had prolonged intubation. The mean intensive care unit admission length of stay for tracheostomy patients was 37.17 days, while it was 12.09 days for patients without tracheostomy (t(226)=-9.32, p < 0.001). Regarding prolonged intubation among patients with COVID-19 (n = 7, 6.31%), the complications were as follows: six people (85.71%) had dysphonia, one (14.29%) had vocal cord granuloma, and two (28.57%) had subglottic tracheal stenosis. The mortality rate among our study participants was 51.32%, and the risk was significantly higher in older people (Odds ratio = 1.04, 95% Confidence Interval [CI] = 1.02-1.06) and in delayed tracheostomy cases (OR = 2.95, 95% CI = 1.31-6.63). However, COVID-19 status was not significantly related to the risk of mortality. CONCLUSIONS: Delaying tracheostomy increases the risk of mortality. Therefore, we recommend weighing the risks and benefits for each patient to benefit both healthcare workers and patients with COVID-19.

The scarcity of freshwater resources resulting in a significant yield loss presents a pressing challenge in agriculture. To address this issue, utilizing abundantly available saline water could offer a smart solution. In this study, we demonstrate that the genome sequence rhizosphere bacterium Tritonibacter mobilis AK171, a halophilic marine bacterium recognized for its ability to thrive in saline and waterlogged environments, isolated from mangroves, has the remarkable ability to enable plant growth using saline irrigation. AK171 is characterized as rod-shaped cells, displays agile movement in free-living conditions, and adopts a rosette arrangement in static media. Moreover, The qualitative evaluation of PGP traits showed that AK171 could produce siderophores and IAA but could not solubilize phosphate nor produce hydrolytic enzymes it exhibits a remarkable tolerance to high temperatures and salinity. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive genome sequence analysis of T. mobilis AK171 to unravel the genetic mechanisms underlying its plant growth-promoting abilities in such challenging conditions. Our analysis revealed diverse genes and pathways involved in the bacterium's adaptation to salinity and waterlogging stress. Notably, T. mobilis AK171 exhibited a high level of tolerance to salinity and waterlogging through the activation of stress-responsive genes and the production of specific enzymes and metabolites. Additionally, we identified genes associated with biofilm formation, indicating its potential role in establishing symbiotic relationships with host plants. Furthermore, our analysis unveiled the presence of genes responsible for synthesizing antimicrobial compounds, including tropodithietic acid (TDA), which can effectively control phytopathogens. This genomic insight into T. mobilis AK171 provides valuable information for understanding the molecular basis of plant-microbial interactions in saline and waterlogged environments. It offers potential applications for sustainable agriculture in challenging conditions.

Haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) is fundamental in monitoring glycaemic control during pregnancy. However, several conditions could affect this test's accuracy, including iron deficiency anaemia (IDA). Hence, this systematic review delves into the underexplored connection between IDA, iron replacement therapy (IRT), and haemoglobin A1C (HbA1c) during pregnancy. An electronic search of the Cochrane, MEDLINE, and Embase databases was conducted by six authors. From a comprehensive search strategy, 968 records were obtained. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, seven studies were included, comprising 365 women selected for analysis. Six studies indicated a positive correlation between IDA and HbA1c levels, while one found no correlation. The average HbA1c level of the included studies in pregnant women was 5.64%. In comparison, it was found that non-pregnant women had lower HbA1c levels. Among the included studies, the mean HbA1c levels decreased from 5.1% to 4.89% after treating pregnant women with IRT. The review emphasises the complexity of interpreting HbA1c levels in pregnant women with IDA, highlighting the influence of pregnancy-induced physiological changes. In addition, this suggests that HbA1c should not be the sole criterion for diabetes management in pregnant women with IDA. Future research should focus on alternative glycaemic monitoring methods unaffected by IDA.

PURPOSE: The intraoperative detection of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leaks during endoscopic skull base surgery is critical to ensure watertight sealed defects. Intrathecal fluorescein (ITF) is a valuable adjunct to intraoperative investigation. Hence, our aim is to summarize the evidence of the efficacy of ITF as an accurate diagnostic modality and reconstruction guide for non-congenital skull base defects. METHODS: Using the Cochrane Central, MEDLINE, and Embase databases, we identified studies involving the use of ITF in non-congenital CSF leaks which were published until November 2023. The STATA 18 software was used for meta-analysis. RESULTS: Fourteen studies met the inclusion criteria, in which seven studies were included in the meta-analysis. ITF was used in 1898 (90.3%) of patients, with a detection rate of 88.1%. The overall detection rate of non-congenital CSF leaks among ITF concentrations of 5% and 10% had a statistically significant pooled effect size of 2.6 (95% CI = 2.25, 2.95), while when comparing the ITF to other alternative radiological tests, it was not statistically significant with a mean difference of 0.88 (95% CI = - 0.4, 2.16). Moreover, the pooled prevalence was statistically significant in regards of the complications associated with ITF with an effect size of 0.6 (95% CI = 0.39, 0.82), indicating that 60% of patients who underwent ITF would experience at least one of the measured complications. CONCLUSION: ITF is considered as an efficient tool in localizing skull base defects. However, there was no significant results when comparing the ITF to other alternative radiological tests. Accordingly, if the ITF intervention is indicated, patients should be carefully selected based on their clinical need.

BACKGROUND: Nowadays, especially after the COVID-19 pandemic, electronic learning (eLearning) has become a necessity in education. eLearning can be either synchronous, where classes are conducted in real-time, or asynchronous, where students can access the class material at any time. Student-instructor interaction has become essential to the educational process. In the literature, most studies have focused on the preferred methods of eLearning and the barriers to interaction in eLearning. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the factors that affect students' interactions during eLearning and their impacts on students' academic achievements. METHODS: A national cross-sectional study was conducted among clinical and pre-clinical medical students who were attending universities in five regions of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. Data were collected using a bespoke online self-administered questionnaire covering sociodemographic features, eLearning barriers, preferences, and the impact of eLearning on students' performance and understanding. RESULTS: This study involved 1371 medical students, of whom 52.37% were male and 51.13% were in their pre-clinical years of medical college. Of the participants, 59.88% (n = 821) preferred synchronous modalities of eLearning, and 33.33% (n = 457) avoided interaction during synchronous lectures. The main predictors of avoiding interaction during online lectures were being male in the clinical years of medical studies, being in a quiet atmosphere, having difficulties using the eLearning platform, having a poor internet connection, having a visual learning style, being insecure, and the presence of opposite-sex students and facilitators. In addition, 12.25% students (n = 168) reported a lower grade point average (GPA), whereas 11.96% (n = 164) reported an improved GPA after eLearning compared with in-person/onsite learning sessions. The GPA fluctuation was related to gender, personality type, learning style, interaction, and eLearning modality preference. Moreover, the students' understanding was enhanced by recorded lectures (n = 1,093, 79.72%) and supportive multimedia (n = 1,037, 75.64%), and the easy to use platform (n = 1037, 75.64%). CONCLUSION: The synchronous modality of eLearning was the preferred teaching method among the medical students. However, multiple individual, technical, and environmental factors affected their interaction, performance, and understanding during these sessions. Hence, future interventional research is recommended to overcome interaction barriers and enhance student performance and understanding of eLearning.

Purpose: Broad evidence points out that women workers in Saudi Arabia face a range of inequitable work practices despite continued efforts for gender equality. The study aims to assess the satisfaction of Saudi women working in the health sector among certain factors in the work environment, factors that enable them to gain opportunities and benefits and make decisions. Patients and Methods: This is a cross-sectional study, which involved the use of closed-ended surveys on 261 Saudi women working in the healthcare sector. Results: Most of the females were aged between 25 and 34 years (59%) and more than half of them worked in the governmental sector (53%). Fifty-eight percent of the females hold clinical jobs, 25% of the administrative jobs were 37% of them have more than 19 years of working experience. The finding showed a significant association between female workers in health sector satisfaction with factors related to the workplace environment, training, and development, and their involvement in decision-making. Conclusion: Most women felt empowered when they received equitable tasks and were able to reach managerial-level positions in their organizations. Establishing a positive work environment characterized by opportunities has the potential to enhance women workers' satisfaction.

Aim To examine unexplored knowledge of cardiovascular highrisk medications and perception thereof among practising nurses and students in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods The multicentre cross-sectional quantitative study used an online survey dichotomised into a knowledge test (true/false and multiple choice questions) and a perception assessment (closed-ended questions). Four hundred and eighteen nurses participated in the study. Results In the knowledge test, 19 (4.5%) participants scored high (≥71%), while 83 (19.8%) and 316 (75.5%) demonstrated moderate (score ≥51-70%) and poor performance (score ≤50%), respectively. In a comparative analysis, the knowledge level of staff nurses was significantly higher than the students but not the other nurses' cohort. Nurses' specialty and region of KSA were strongly associated with the knowledge level. Emergency room nurses and those belonging to the eastern region of KSA exhibited higher knowledge levels than other subgroups. A vast majority of nurses, 128 (30.6 %), rated their knowledge of medicines as somewhat sufficient, while quoting insufficient knowledge 226 (54.1%) as the major cause of medication errors. Three hundred and sixteen (75%) nurses expressed interest in undergoing specialised training in high-alert medication-based therapy preferably in a classroom setting by 279 (66.7%). Conclusion This study revealed a marked knowledge deficit in high-risk cardiovascular drugs among nurses. The pharmacological curriculum in nursing schools should be tailored to be clinically oriented and reinforced with problem-based learning. Continued pharmacology education focusing on high-risk drugs should be implemented among nurses to safeguard patient lives by mitigating the risks of medication error.

BACKGROUND: Several studies have reported that iron-deficiency anemia (IDA) and its treatment might lead to a distorted reading of glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c) value. Hence, this review aims to systematically investigate the effect of iron replacement therapy (IRT) on HbA1c levels, as the literature is deficient in assessing this clinical phenomenon. METHODS: An electronic search of the Cochrane, MEDLINE, and Embase databases was conducted by four independent authors. RESULTS: Among the 8332 articles identified using the search strategy, 10 records (with a total of 2113 participants) met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. In nine of the studies, IRT was found to decrease HbA1c levels; in the remaining study, IRT was found to increase HbA1c levels. The effect size of the pooled standardized mean difference in HbA1c levels between the treatment and control groups with IDA was 1.8 (95% CI = -0.5, 2.31). Heterogeneity was assessed using the I2 and χ2 tests, and the resultant values were 98.46% and p = 0.09, respectively. Additionally, the mean difference between the HbA1c levels (pre-IRT and post-IRT) showed a drop in the HbA1c levels which ranged from 1.20 to 0.43 mg/dL. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that IRT decreases HbA1c levels, and it is helpful in treating IDA patients with poor glycemic control. Accordingly, the results provide an added perspective on antidiabetic medication dosing and physicians' interpretation of initially elevated HbA1c values.

Isoptericola sp. AK164 is a Gram-positive, aerobic bacterial genus from the family Promicromonosporaceae, isolated from the root rhizosphere of Avicennia marina. AK164 significantly enhanced the growth of the Arabidopsis thaliana plant under normal and saline conditions. These bacteria can produce ACC deaminase and several enzymes playing a role in carbohydrate hydrolyses, such as cellulose, hemicellulose, and chitin degradation, which may contribute to plant growth, salt tolerance, and stress elevation. The genome sequence AK164 has a single circular chromosome of approximately 3.57 Mbp with a GC content of 73.53%. A whole genome sequence comparison of AK164 with type strains from the same genus, using digital DNA-DNA hybridization and average nucleotide identity calculations, revealed that AK164 might potentially belong to a new species of Isoptericola. Genome data and biochemical analyses indicate that AK164 could be a potential biostimulant for improving agriculture in submerged saline land.

Background Many physiological, psychological, and environmental stressors can be experienced by pilots throughout their careers, which may affect their mental and psychological health and their performance consequently. Stressing factors of aviation and commercial operations can result in pilots' burnout, which is a description of the response to chronic emotional exhaustion and loss of motivation. Objective The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of burnout and compare the effects of different coping strategies on burnout levels among commercial pilots in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, 2023 Methods The study was a cross-sectional survey utilizing an online form of a validated questionnaire administered to pilots of Saudi commercial airlines in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The study targeted on-duty Saudi commercial pilots, excluding retired and in-training pilots, with an estimated population of around 2000. A sample size of 311 was determined using an equation considering a 5% margin of error, 95% confidence level, and a 60.3% burnout prevalence rate. Non-probability snowball sampling method was used to achieve sample size. Results A total of 321 pilots were included, mostly Saudis. The participants had a median age of 47, and the majority were married with one to two children. BMI classifications showed high percentages of overweight and obese individuals. The study found that most pilots experienced medium levels of burnout (70.1%). Nationality, marital status, and shorter sleeping duration were significantly associated with higher burnout levels. Common challenges included long duties (79.4%), irregular working hours (72.3%), and time away from home (55.5%). Coping strategies included rest and sleep (81%), exercise (59.2%), and relaxation behaviors (50.5%). Stressors such as long duties, irregular working hours, and work conflicts were significantly associated with higher burnout levels. However, no significant associations were found between coping strategies and burnout levels. Conclusion The study found that most pilots experienced medium levels of burnout. In addition, common challenges included long duties, irregular working hours, and time away from home. The study emphasizes the need to address work-related stressors, implement interventions, and support pilots' mental health. Promoting healthy coping strategies and understanding individual resilience is important. Further research and organizational efforts are required to mitigate burnout and enhance the quality of life for aviation professionals, benefiting both individuals and the industry.

Background: According to the World Health Organization, by the end of 2020, an estimated 7.8 million people was living with breast cancer diagnosed between 2015 and 2020; in Saudi Arabia, more than fifty percent of cancer cases are detected in late stages, which results in increased mortality rates and reduces the chances of remission. Breast cancer screening using mammography in women fifty years and older worldwide and in women forty years and older in Saudi Arabia shows a significant decrease in morbidity and mortality. However, screening rates are not satisfactory and require further investigation. Methods: This cross-sectional study included women aged 40 years and older. Data was collected through an online survey distributed via social media platforms to all regions of Saudi Arabia. Chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were used to examine the difference in the distribution of study variables among women who had received breast screening and those who had not. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the risk of not having breast cancer screening. Results: A total of 973 participants completed the survey. Among respondents, 476 (48.9%) had been screened at least once in their lifetime. The main motivators for screening were: receiving an advice from a physician (41.8%), interest in early detection (39.8%), and receiving free mammography (29.7%). On the other hand, the main barriers to receiving breast cancer screening were: finding screening unnecessary (24.2%), believing screening to be painful (22.1%), and fearing abnormal results (18.6%). Conclusion: We found that nearly half of the targeted screening group had never received mammography screening. These results warrant urgent attention, as early detection is key to better outcomes. Our study's results aid in better understanding the public's points of view and inform interventions to improve breast cancer.

Aim: To explore nurses' readiness to prescribe medications under supervision and identify associations between prescribing practices under supervision and demographic characteristics in Saudi Arabia. Design: A cross-sectional study. Methods: Using convenience sampling, this study used a 32-item survey to collect data on nurses prescribing medications under supervision between December 2022 and March 2023. Results: A total of 379 nurses were recruited from different regions in Saudi Arabia. Approximately 7% (n = 30) of the participants were prescribing medications independently, and 70% (n = 267) expressed their likelihood of becoming prescribers. The highest motivating factors to become prescribers were improvement of patient care (52.2%) and contribution to the multidisciplinary team (52.0%). Most participants (60%-81%) agreed that prescribing medications under supervision would improve potential outcomes at the system, nurse, and patient levels. Availability of appropriate mentors or supervisors (72.9%) was the highest rated facilitating factor, followed by support of nursing colleagues (72%). Based on demographic characteristics, findings revealed significant differences in the: a) likelihood and motivators of becoming prescribers; b) required minimum qualification, years of experience, and continuing professional education hours to become prescribers; and c) type of organizations delivering educational programs for nurse prescribing. Conclusion: Majority of nurses in Saudi Arabia favored becoming prescribers, and motivating factors were mostly relevant to optimizing patient care outcomes. Having the proper supervision was rated as the most facilitating factor for nurse prescribing. Nurses' views on potential outcomes, facilitating factors, and possible motivators varied based on nurses' demographical characteristics. Implications for the professional and/or patient care: Nurses favored prescribing under supervision to improve patient care outcomes, which is an opportunity to expand the benefits of health services, including easy access to healthcare. Impact: Results revealed that nurses support the implementation of prescribing practice under supervision. Thus, the findings may inform practice change in Saudi Arabia to allow prescribing under supervision, which was perceived to have a positive impact on patient care outcomes. RESUMEN

Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have created a global climate crisis which requires immediate interventions to mitigate the negative effects on all aspects of life on this planet. As current agriculture and land use contributes up to 25% of total GHG emissions, plant scientists take center stage in finding possible solutions for a transition to sustainable agriculture and land use. In this article, the PlantACT! (Plants for climate ACTion!) initiative of plant scientists lays out a road map of how and in which areas plant scientists can contribute to finding immediate, mid-term, and long-term solutions, and what changes are necessary to implement these solutions at the personal, institutional, and funding levels.

Background: The burden of sickle cell disease (SCD) is high in Saudi Arabia, with a significant impact on patients' quality of life (QoL). This study aimed to assess the health-related quality of life (HRQoL) among adults with SCD. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among adults with SCD attending hematology clinics at Qatif Central Hospital in the Eastern Province of Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire included subsections to collect information from participants, including sociodemographic attributes, SCD characteristics, HRQoL based on SF-36, and opinions regarding barriers to service. Results: Among 272 SCD patients, the highest mean score of HRQoL was observed in the social functioning (SF) domain (65.0±23.4), whereas the lowest score was observed in the role limitations due to physical health (RP) domain (47.2±40.4). The mean score for participants' opinions regarding service provision was 19.27±4.68 (min-max:10-30), and only 24.6% had a positive opinion regarding the accessibility of service provision. A total of 38.6% of the respondents acknowledged shortcomings in the services offered by healthcare staff, and 43% identified weaknesses in communication with healthcare staff. Moreover, 40.1% agreed about feeling stigmatized about their condition. SCD patients who were <40 years old, males, had a university degree, had health insurance, waited <15 minutes before receiving health care, and had positive opinions regarding service provision were more likely to have better HRQoL scores. Conclusion: Adults with SCD exhibited low HRQoL in general, and different factors were related to low HRQoL scores. Counselling, empowerment, and improvement of doctor-patient communication are important strategies to improve healthcare provision, and consequently, HRQoL among adults with SCD.

This study aims to chart and review the unexplored transgender research portfolio of Muslim countries using bibliometric method. Data retrieved from the Scopus database were analyzed using CiteSpace, VOSviewer, Biblioshiny, and ScientoPy software. It was found that barring Turkey and Iran, transgender research has been minimal in most Muslim countries. The collective productivity is gradually but surely rising. Around 84% of the publications have been collaborative efforts. The keyword analysis revealed that gender dysphoria, human immunodeficiency virus, LGBT, and vaginoplasty were the most frequently used keywords. The socio-economic circumstances of the transgender community are generally deplorable in most Muslim nations. Overall, there is a dire need for high-quality multifaceted transgender research in the Muslim world to raise general awareness. Resolving disputes on gender dysphoria or sex reassignment surgeries and reinstating the social rights of the transgender community should be the utmost priority of future research in Muslim countries.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) is a common occupational hazard and a major cause of deafness among airport workers. However, few studies have been conducted to investigate the various risk factors related to hearing loss. PURPOSE: the purpose of this study was to measure the prevalence and risk factors of NIHL among Muscat International Airport airside workers. METHOD: Their daily noise exposure level at the airport was measured, and the time-weighted average (TWA) was calculated for each airside department. A cross-sectional study design involving 312 workers from the eight departments of the airport was chosen and the prevalence of NIHL among workers was assessed. The study participants then completed a self-administered questionnaire that covered their socio-demographic characteristics, occupational exposure history and the health-related risk factors of NIHL. RESULTS: The TWA recorded for the workers was above the accepted limit in some departments, namely, cabin appearance, ramp, line maintenance and hangar. The prevalence of NIHL among participants was 21.79% (n = 68). Of these 68 participants with NIHL, 22.30% were exposed to job-related high noise levels. NIHL was common among participants aged 40 or above (57.35%, n = 39) and high school degree holders (29.60%, n = 29), as well as those who were exposed to higher noise levels (84.89%, n = 191) or who did not wear their hearing protection devices (HPDs) regularly (53.65%, n = 125). CONCLUSION: around a quarter of our study participants who were exposed to high noise levels suffer from NIHL.

AIM: The study aims to understand the role of tumor suppressor genes in colorectal cancer initiation and progression. BACKGROUND: Sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC) develops through distinct molecular events. Loss of the 18q chromosome is a conspicuous event in the progression of adenoma to carcinoma. There is limited information regarding the molecular effectors of this event. Earlier, we had reported ATP8B1 as a novel gene associated with CRC. ATP8B1 belongs to the family of P-type ATPases (P4 ATPase) that primarily function to facilitate the translocation of phospholipids. OBJECTIVE: In this study, we attempt to implicate the ATP8B1 gene located on chromosome 18q as a tumor suppressor gene. METHODS: Cells culture, Patient data analysis, Generation of stable ATP8B1 overexpressing SW480 cell line, Preparation of viral particles, Cell Transduction, Generation of stable ATP8B1 knockdown HT29 cell line with CRISPR/Cas9, Generation of stable ATP8B1 knockdown HT29 cell line with shRNA, Quantification of ATP8B1 gene expression, Real-time cell proliferation and migration assays, Cell proliferation assay, Cell migration assay, Protein isolation and western blotting, Endpoint cell viability assay, Uptake and efflux of sphingolipid, Statistical and computational analyses. RESULTS: We studied indigenous patient data and confirmed the reduced expression of ATP8B1 in tumor samples. CRC cell lines were engineered with reduced and enhanced levels of ATP8B1, which provided a tool to study its role in cancer progression. Forced reduction of ATP8B1 expression either by CRISPR/Cas9 or shRNA was associated with increased growth and proliferation of CRC cell line - HT29. In contrast, overexpression of ATP8B1 resulted in reduced growth and proliferation of SW480 cell lines. We generated a network of genes that are downstream of ATP8B1. Further, we provide the predicted effect of modulation of ATP8B1 levels on this network and the possible effect on fatty acid metabolism-related genes. CONCLUSION: Tumor suppressor gene (ATP8B1) located on chromosome 18q could be responsible in the progression of colorectal cancer. Knocking down of this gene causes an increased rate of cell proliferation and reduced cell death, suggesting its role as a tumor suppressor. Increasing the expression of this gene in colorectal cancer cells slowed down their growth and increased cell death. These evidences suggest the role of ATP8B1 as a tumor suppressor gene.
