PIP: This article reports on the use of an age sex register at the Barbados Ministry of Health, U.W.I. General Practice Unit. The register is valuable in relation to the practice of family medicine by providing information on the practice population and the identification of special groups by age and sex. After 16 months of registration, analysis of the card files reveals that more females (64.1%) than males (35.9%) use this holistic medicine practice; levels of use for different health services are calculated; immunization status of children and accuracy of records is screened; the age sex profile is compared to the national population; and the incidence of specific diseases (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity) and types of procedures are calculated. This data will provide guidance in practice management of services and record keeping, and better surveillance of at risk groups (e.g. children). Computerization of the register is suggested to overcome the problem of time and effort needed to extract information by hand. Widespread use of this register in Caribbean Family Practice has research potential which will benefit patient and practitioner.^ieng
