RESUMO

Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo é fornecer ao cirurgião-dentista conhecimento sobre aspectos gerais da zircônia e abordar a introdução das diferentes gerações. Materiais e métodos: Foi realizada uma pesquisa eletrônica da literatura atual em inglês, incluindo artigos científicos publicados até 2019. Resultados: De acordo com os artigos selecionados, diferenças importantes foram encontradas em relação as novas composições da zircônia, sua microestrutura, diferenças no conteúdo da fase cúbica, e de ítria na fase tetragonal, levando a diferentes propriedades ópticas, mecânicas e de resistência ao envelhecimento. Conclusão: A zircônia é o material mais resistente disponível entre as cerâmicas, com diferenças mecânicas e ópticas entre os materiais disponíveis. A introdução das coroas monolíticas resolveu o problema de lascamento da porcelana de cobertura, mas foram necessárias modificações estruturais para fornecer adequada translucidez.


Purpose: This study aims to provide knowledge to clinicians about general aspects of zirconia and to approach the introduction of different zirconia generations. Methods:An electronic search of the English current literature was conducted including scientific articles published up to 2019. Results: According to the selected articles, important differences were found in terms of the novel compositions of zirconia, microstructures among the materials, differences in cubic phase content and yttria in the tetragonal phase, leading to different optical, mechanical and aging resistance properties. Conclusion: Zirconia is the most resistant material available among ceramics with mechanical and optical differences on available materials. The introduction of the monolithic crowns solving the veneering delamination but struc-tural modifications were necessary to provide adequate translucency

Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate chemical and topographical changes in the intaglio zirconia surface induced by chemical conditioning solutions using FTIR and SEM analysis. Material and method: twelve plates for each FTIR and SEM tests from each zirconia materials (UPCERA HT White, BruxZir® Solid Zirconia, and Copran® Multilayer), milled by a Yenadent CAD/CAM system, sintered and divided randomly into a three groups. A different surface conditioning was applied to the intaglio surface of each group: 30% hydrogen peroxide, 30% citric acid and control group. Result and discussion: by using of the FTIR spectroscopy, an evidence of new bands formation appeared at 1637cm-1 and 3352cm-1 due to the high oxidizing effect of hydrogen peroxide, and at 630cm-1 and 1663cm-1 due to the chelating action of citric acid, and simultaneously, SEM assessment of the surface topography took place, to identify lines, scratches, or surface dissociation that appeared on the intaglio zirconia surface after conditioning. Conclusion: such analysis provides an enhancement of new convenient, less expensive, reliable trials to improve micro-bond strength of luting cement to Y-TZP ceramics.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the fatigue limits of three-unit monolithic zirconia fixed dental prosthesis (FDPs) before and after grinding of the gingival areas of connectors with diamond burs. MATERIAL AND METHODS: FDPs were milled from pre-sintered blocks of zirconia simulating the absence of the first mandibular molar. Half of the specimens were subjected to grinding, simulating clinical adjustment, and all of them were subjected to glazing procedure. Additional specimens were manufactured for roughness analysis. FDPs were adhesively cemented onto glass-fiber reinforced epoxy resin abutments. Fatigue limits and standard deviations were obtained using a staircase fatigue method (n=20, 100,000 loading cycles/5Hz). The initial test load was 70% of the mean load-to-fracture (n=3) and load increments were 5% of the initial test load for both the control and ground specimens. Data were compared by Student's T-test (α≤0.05). RESULTS: Both the control and ground groups exhibited similar values of load-to-fracture and fatigue limits. Neither the surface treatments nor ageing affected the surface roughness of the specimens. CONCLUSIONS: The damage induced by grinding with fine-grit diamond bur in the gingival area of the connectors did not decrease the fatigue limit of the three-unit monolithic zirconia FDP.

The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of intra-oral aging on the tetragonal-to-monoclinic (t→m) phase transformation of two Y-TZP dental ceramics - Lava Frame (Frame) and Lava Plus (Plus) - and determine the impact of this response on their microstructures and mechanical properties: flexural strength, Young's modulus, microhardness and fracture toughness. Standardized ceramic specimens were analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). After the baseline analysis, the specimens were attached to personalized intra-oral resin appliances and exposed to the oral cavity of 20 subjects for 60 days and then analyzed again. Specimens produced for mechanical properties evaluation were also analyzed before and after the 60-day intra-oral aging. The data were analyzed using two-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD's post hoc test (α=0.05). Weibull analysis was used to evaluate the strength reliability. Both Y-TZP ceramics suffered t→m phase transformation after 60-day intra-oral aging (Plus=4.7%/Frame=7.7%). SEM and AFM analyses showed dislodgement of ZrO2 grains and a significant increase in roughness after intra-oral aging for both ceramics. Both Y-TZP ceramics suffered a decrease on flexural strength, Young's modulus and fracture toughness after intra-oral aging (p<0.05). Only Plus presented a decrease of microhardness after intra-oral aging (p<0.05). Intra-oral aging for 60 days produced t→m phase transformation, changed the microstructure and decreased the mechanical properties of two Y-TZP dental ceramics.

New titanium alloys have been developed with the aim of utilizing materials with better properties for application as biomaterials, and Ti-Zr system alloys are among the more promising of these. In this paper, the influence of zirconium concentrations on the structure, microstructure, and selected mechanical properties of Ti-Zr alloys is analyzed. After melting and swaging, the samples were characterized through chemical analysis, density measurements, X-ray diffraction, optical microscopy, Vickers microhardness, and elasticity modulus. In-vitro cytotoxicity tests were performed on cultured osteogenic cells. The results showed the formation essentially of the α' phase (with hcp structure) and microhardness values greater than cp-Ti. The elasticity modulus of the alloys was sensitive to the zirconium concentrations while remaining within the range of values of conventional titanium alloys. The alloys presented no cytotoxic effects on osteoblastic cells in the studied conditions.

Blue, green, and red emission was observed under infrared excitation in ZrO2:Yb3+ nanocrystals prepared by the sol-gel process. The structural characterization was performed by using XRD and HRTEM, suggesting that the crystalline phase of the nanoparticles is controlled by the active ion concentration being mainly tetragonal for 2 mol% of dopant and mainly monoclinic for 0.5 mol%. The blue emission was explained in terms of the cooperative deexcitation of an Yb-Yb pair, while the green and red bands were associated with the up-conversion of traces of Er ion. The number of photons involved in the luminescence process is analyzed in order to confirm that cooperative emission is produced by the interaction of an Yb pair and that the green and red emission are the results of energy transfer between Yb-Er ions. The high efficiency of all bands is explained in terms of the high surface area of the nanoparticles.

We present the results of the Vicker's hardness test and the use of near-infrared Raman spectroscopy (RS) to measure in vitro the degree of conversion (DC) of a bis(phenol)-A-glycidyl-dimethacrylate-based composite resin, photoactivated by both a halogen lamp (power density=478 mW/cm(2); 8-mm diameter spot) and an argon laser (power density=625 mW/cm(2); 7-mm diameter spot). The degree of conversion was estimated by analyzing the relative intensities between the aromatic C=C stretching Raman mode at 1610 cm(-1) and the methacrylate C=C stretching Raman mode (1640 cm(-1)) on top and bottom surfaces. For the hardness evaluation, the samples were embedded in polyester resin and three indentations with a 50-g load for 10 s were made on the top surface. The higher relative DC values achieved by the photoactivation of a composite resin by the argon laser suggest a better biocompatibility in the bottom surface. The correlation test showed that the higher Vicker's hardness number (VHN) values were associated with higher DC values. The derivative analysis showed a greater curing rate from 5 to 20 s of exposure. The comparison of VHN and DC values with both light sources at each curing time showed that a small change in conversion is related to a large change in hardness. Raman spectroscopy is more sensitive to changes in the first stages of curing reaction than later ones, and the Vicker's hardness assay is more sensitive to changes in the last stages.

The use of odontological or orthopedic metal implants requires the availability of techniques to estimate tissue response to the corrosion processes. In previous experimental studies we showed the deposition of corrosion products not only locally (Olmedo et al., Implant Dent 2003; 12: 75-80) but also systemically (Olmedo et al., J Mater Sci: Mater in Medic 2002; 13: 793-796) in organs such as liver, spleen and lung. The aim of the present study was to propose a method to quantitatively assess the tissue deposits of the corrosion products of the materials used to manufacture implants. The samples (liver and lung) were embedded in paraffin, and the histological sections were submitted to thickness standardization. The quantitative evaluation of the deposits was performed in an MPM-800 (Carl Zeiss)* microscope. The light microscopy images were digitalized and then analyzed employing the DNA-IBAS-Kontron software that allows for the identification and evaluation of cells loaded with corrosion products (objective 20x). The following end-points were assessed: total field area, number of deposits of corrosion products, partial and total area of the deposits, and the ratio between volume of the deposits and tissue volume. The method proposed serves to quantitatively evaluate, at light microscopy level, the deposition of corrosion products in tissues.
