SUMMARY: The purposes of the present study were first to evaluate the association between anthropometric dimensions of the thorax and trunk with spirometric indices, second, to fit a prediction equation with anthropometric dimensions of the trunk, and third, to compare our predictive model with two diagnostic equations. Fifty-nine university students between 20 and 40 years old, of both sexes and non-smokers were recruited. Variables considered were age, sex, weight, height, chest transverse diameter, chest anteroposterior diameter, chest perimeter, chest height, trunk height, maximum expiratory flow (PEF), forced expiratory volume in the first second (FEV1) and forced vital capacity (FVC). Multiple regression analysis was used to estimate spirometric values based on demographic and anthropometric variables. FVC and FEV1 have a direct linear association with chest transverse diameter, chest height, chest circumference, and trunk height. A multiple linear regression equation was fitted, indicating that it is possible to estimate FVC and FEV1 as a function of trunk height and chest girth for both sexes. These variables can explain 74% of the FVC values and 68% of the FEV1 values. Comparing the values obtained by our predictive equations with the national reference equations, we observe that our results are closer to those of Quanjer et al. (2012) than to those of Knudson et al. (1983). Trunk height and chest circumference have a direct association with FEV1 and FVC and are good predictors of FEV1 and FVC in university students. Our estimated values are closer to Quanjer et al. (2012) than Knudson et al. (1983) prediction equations.

SUMMARY: The Puma concolor is one of the largest carnivores present in Chile, although its size varies according to the geographical area in which it is found. It is increasingly common to find them outside their habitat and more in our environment. Its ecological, reproductive and nutritional aspects are known, but very little is known about its anatomy, which creates a challenge in the veterinary morphological area that needs strengthening. The present study consisted of an anatomical description of the appendicular skeleton of three adult specimens of Puma concolor (3 males) in the veterinary anatomy laboratory of the Universidad San Sebastián, headquarters of Patagonia Puerto Montt, which allowed a detailed study of the conformation of the skeleton of each structure present in the thoracic appendicular skeleton of these specimens. This allowed us to achieve results of morphological interest and delve into the anatomy of this species.

RESUMO

The systematics of Megalopodidae is not adequately known, in spite of it being a relatively small group of phytophagous beetles. The first phylogenetic analysis of Megalopodidae with a comprehensive generic representation (25 genera of 30 described, 10 subgenera and 77 species) is undertaken. A parsimony analysis under equal and implied weights was carried out based on 147 adult and larval morphological characters. Subfamilies Palophaginae and Zeugophorinae were recovered as monophyletic, by contrast with Megalopodinae, which proved to be paraphyletic. Atelederinae are proposed as a new subfamily. Also, three tribes and three subtribes within Megalopodinae are proposed: Leucasteini trib.n., Sphondyliini trib.n. and Megalopodini, the latter including Macrolophina subtrib.n., Temnaspidina subtrib.n. and Megalopodina. The genera Macrolopha, Kuilua, Poecilomorpha, Temnaspis, Antonaria, Agathomerus, Megalopus and Bothromegalopus were recovered as non-monophyletic. New delimitations of the polyphyletic genera Poecilomorpha and Macrolopha are proposed, Clythraxeloma is resurrected, and the subgenera of Agathomerus are suppressed. The following new combinations are proposed: Kuilua apicata (Fairmaire), K. nyassae (Jacoby), Poecilomorpha cribricollis (Pic), P. minuta (Pic), Clythraxeloma assamensis (Jacoby), C. bipartita (Lacordaeri), C. discolineata (Pic), C. downesii (Baly), C. gerstaeckeri (Westwood), C. laosensis (Pic), C. maculata (Pic), C. mouhoti (Baly), C. nigrocyanea (Motschulsky), C. pretiosa (Reineck), Temnaspis tricoloripes (Pic) and Barticaria faciatus (Dalman). Clythraxeloma cyanipennis Kraatz is a restored combination. Distribution patterns of Megalopodidae largely conform to the breakup of Gondwanaland, with its main clades having particular distributions: Andean-Australian (Palophaginae), Ethiopian (Leucasteini, Sphondyliini, and Macrolophina), Neotropical (Ateledrinae and Megalopodina) and Ethiopian-Oriental-Palaearctic (Temnaspidina the result of a secondary expansion. Zeugophorinae present a worldwide distribution, except for the Neotropical and Andean regions, which may be the result of geodispersal. The findings of the present study also shed light on groups with taxonomic issues, where phylogenetic analyses are strongly needed.

RESUMO

Pericopina is divided into 36 genera, with the greatest diversity recorded in the Neotropics. Studies on the taxonomy and systematics of pericopines are scarce, and one of the few phylogenetic hypotheses available in the literature places some Afro-Indo-Malayan lineages among the Neotropical representatives. Through a survey of adult morphological characters, we analyzed the phylogenetic relationships in Pericopina including Nyctemera and other Afro-Indo-Malayan genera as putative members of this subtribe. Additionally, we tested the monophyly of Dysschema, a key genus to understanding the evolutionary patterns of the extreme sexual dimorphism and polychromatism in Pericopina. Our cladistic analysis, based on 162 morphological characters, suggests that Pericopina is a polyphyletic group. Xenosoma is the only genus among the Neotropical pericopines related to the Afro-Indo-Malayan species; Scearctia is closely related to Lithosiini, and Pteroodes shows morphological similarities with Phaegopterina. Additionally, Seileria is a new junior subjective synonym of Thyrgis. The monophyly of Dysschema is supported only if the monotypic genera Myserla and Are are included. These are herein designated new synonyms of Dysschema. Our findings suggest that intersexual polychromatism and intersexual polymorphism for wing characters have arisen multiple times in the evolutionary history of Pericopina. Intersexual polychromatism is also widely distributed within Dysschema, perhaps representing a derived feature with multiple origins in the genus.

RESUMO

SUMMARY: The pudu (Pudu puda) is classified as an artiodactyl of the Cervidae family. It is a native species found in Argentina and Chile. It is estimated that its population has been substantially reduced due to several causes, such as loss of forests, predation, hunting, and vehicle accident. Therefore, this species is protected due to its vulnerable conservation status. The extrinsic muscles of the thoracic limb have great importance in the biomechanical functionality of the suspension of the limb, neck, and head, as well as participating in the movement of the thoracic wall and thoracic limb. The objective of the present study is to describe the extrinsic musculature of the thoracic limb of a specimen of pudu, comparing the results with those described for domestic ruminants in the classical anatomical bibliography. Basic procedures: All extrinsic muscles were analyzed, describing shape, distribution, origin, and insertion. The results indicate that the pudu specimen has anatomical characteristics similar to domestic ruminants; however, some differences should be considered. Main findings: The brachiocephalicus muscle has an evident clavicular intersection that separates it into cleidobrachialis, cervicalis, and mastoideus pars. The pectoralis superficialis muscle has two distinct and independent pars, and the pectoralis profundus muscle has a partial fusion with the latissimus dorsi and cutaneous trunci muscles. The subclavius muscle is small and has an elongated shape and goes deep into the cephalic vein, just at the point it is a tributary of the external jugular vein. The results of this study present specific anatomical features of Pudu puda providing novel reference information and expanding scientific knowledge of this scarcely studied wild species.

Thoracic Radiology is a diagnostic technique used to study several aberrations, including cardiac abnormalities, which can be determined by VHS (vertebral heart size). The heart length and width are measured, and the CTR (cardiothoracic ratio) is calculated, by comparing the heart width to the thoracic diameter. This study aimed at measuring the cardiac silhouette of non-human primates (PNH) belonging to the genus Sapajus sp., and the Alouatta guariba species through VHS and CTR. From among the eight animals assessed, it was evident that in both the Sapajus sp. and the Alouatta guariba, the highest HSV change index was observed, depending upon the age of the animal. However, although the individuals of the Alouatta guariba species are bigger in size and heavier, the animals of the genus Sapajus sp. have a larger heart size in proportion to their body.(AU)

Mepraia spinolai, M. gajardoi and M. parapatrica occur in distinct regions in Chile. The females of the three species are micropterous. The males of M. gajardoi are brachypterous, those of M. parapatrica can be brachypterous or macropterous and those of M. spinolai can be micropterous, brachypterous or macropterous. Morphological studies were carried out by scanning electron microscopy of female specimens collected in the wild. Head, thorax and abdomen characters of the three species there were not previously studied by SEM allowed a clear distinction amongst the three species.

RESUMO

It was aimed to determine the anatomical structures in thoracic cavity by computed tomography imaging (CT) and compare the cross sectional images in the same specimens which were plastinated after CT imaging. It was also aimed to obtain 3 dimensional (3D) reconstructions of thoracic anatomical structures. Thoracic organs of 3 adult cats were CT imaged and then plastinated in this study. Specimens were plastinated in the same body position in the CT imaging process. CT images and corresponding plastinated cross sections were compared to each other. Anatomical structures of the thoracic cavity in plastinates were in accordance with CT images. Beside the bony structures, other organs such as esophagus, trachea, heart with related vessels, lungs and thoracic muscles were well defined in CT images and plastinates. Moreover, 3D reconstructed images of anatomical structures of thoracic cavity were acquired well. This study is thought to be beneficial for veterinary surgery and radiology fields as well as veterinary anatomy educations.

The aim of the present investigation was to determine the reliability level of the anthropometric measurements related to the thorax performed by an undergraduate student in kinesiology (ELK) comparing them with those of an expert anthropometrist (AE). The process consisted of the staging of competencies divided into three stages: i) development of theoretical and practical skills, ii) Determine the idea of research and construction of its theoretical framework and iii) acquisition of reliability, the ELK carried out this exercise in relation to the AE International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry (ISAK) II. For this point, five participants were recruited, which were randomized and measured by both evaluators. The diameters, perimeters and folds related to the thorax were recorded using the ISAK protocols, to calculate the technical error of the measurement (ETM) and the correlation coefficient of Lin's concordance (CCC). The ETM was accepted for diameters, perimeters and folds, except for the bicipital fold value, which showed a 5.60 %. The relationship strength was moderate to substantial in perimeters and folds and poor in the diameters between the ELK and the AE. In conclusion, the ETM was found within the permitted ranges except for the bicipital fold. However, ELK showed a moderate to substantial level of agreement in perimeters and folds and poor in chest diameters in relation to AE.

SUMMARY: The aim of the following study was to determine if chest measurements cause changes in the predictive equations of inspiratory capacity (IC) and peak expiratory flow (PEF). Twenty- four male subjects between 18 and 26 years old, all sedentary students of the Universidad Catolica del Maule, Chile, were evaluated. They were subjected to basic body anthropometry (weight and body size) and chest specificity, anteroposterior diameter (APD) and transverse (TTD) of the thorax and mesosternal perimeter (MSP). After this, the ventilatory function was evaluated through body plethysmography. To estimate the linear regression equations, the least squares method were used, relating IC and PEF. The comparison between the established predicted value and our proposal was compared using the student t-test or Mann-Whitney U test as appropriate, considering a level of statistical significance of p <0.05. The results indicate that the TTD and MSP were considered for the proposal of the PEF equation, achieving significant differences with the values o f Knudson et al. Therefore, it is concluded that measurements of TTD to RV and MSP to TPC influenced the predictive equation of PEF in sedentary students.

RESUMO

The crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) is a wild canid distributed throughout South America. It is one of the wild canids reported being hit by vehicles and injured in snares, thus inducing trauma or injury to the musculoskeletal system, possibly occurring in the brachial region. The main objective of this research was to provide an anatomic description of the crab-eating fox's intrinsic brachial muscles including shape, origin, insertion, innervation and arterial blood supply, compared with that of the domestic dog. We dissected from superficial to deep two thoracic limbs of seven dead specimens donated to the University of Caldas by CORPOCALDAS. These muscles presented anatomic characteristics similar to those reported in the domestic dog (Canis lupus familiaris) but with a variant in arterial blood supply, allowing us to suggest that surgical procedures that need the knowledge of intrinsic brachial muscles in the crab-eating fox may be homologous to the domestic dog. However, one should consider its variant arterial distribution by part of the collateral radial artery and deep brachial artery to prevent incorrect incisions that may damage these arteries.

RESUMO

Morphological characters can be used to distinguish the vast majority of triatomine species, but the existence of high levels of phenotypic plasticity and recently diverged species can lead to erroneous determinations. To approach this problem, we analyzed the male and female morphologies of the scutella of Triatoma barberi, T. dimidiata, T. lecticularia, T. mexicana, T. recurva, T. rubida, and two sub-species, T. protracta protracta and T. protracta nahuatlae. Scutellum samples were observed by scanning electron microscopy and subjected to morphological analysis and morphometric investigation using a canonical discriminant analysis. The results revealed differences primarily in central depression shape, posterior process, and vestiture. We observed clear dimension-based differences in scutellum morphometry in all the taxa under study, providing sound evidence for species and subspecies differentiation. On the other hand, there is no difference between sexes in T. lecticularia, T. protracta protracta, and T. protracta nahuatlae. Our methodology can be implemented to differentiate species of the genus Triatoma.

RESUMO

Rhodnius amazonicus Almeida et al. (1973) is a triatomine of rare occurrence. This species was found for the third time in Breves city, Pará state, Brazil. Morphometric and morphological studies were carried out on one male and one female. Lent and Wygodzinsky (1979) considered this species as a synonym of R. pictipes, until its revalidation after 23 years by Bérenger and Pluot-Sigwalt (2002). Considering the synonym mentioned above, a comparative study between these two species was performed in order to report the third encounter of this species, and increase the number of morphological characters that distinguish R. amazonicus from R. pictipes. The dorsal side of the head, the dorsal and ventral portions of the thorax, the dorsal, ventral and posterior sides of the female genitalia, eggs and the median process of the pygophore were examined by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). The head, thorax, abdomen and egg parameters of these two species were also measured. The identification of characters on the head, stridulatory sulcus, mesosternum, metasternum, scutellum, process of urotergite I, external female genitalia, pygophore and eggs made the distinction between R. amazonicus and R. pictipes possible. This study has shown the new characters recorded and described for the first time for R. amazonicus and R. pictipes by SEM here made it possible to confirm the morphological separation between these two species. The morphometric analysis also confirmed that the above two taxa are different at specific level.

The main point of this study is to determine the dimensions of the thorax and its relation to the ventilatory function of a group of swimmers members of the swimming team at Universidad Católica del Maule. 42 male subjects, whose age vary between 18 and 26 years old, were evaluated. 18 subjects were on the swimming team and 24 were sedentary students, all of them study in Universidad Católica del Maule. They were performed a basic bodily anthropometry assessment (weight and body size) and they were also performed a specific anthropometric assessment of the thorax, as well as one of the anteroposterior diameter (ATD) and the transverse diameter (TDT), thorax and the mesosternal perimeter (MP). Finally, they were performed an evaluation of the ventilatory function trough body plethysmography. For the statistical analysis the normality of the data was determined, then came the use of t of student or U of Mann-Whitney and Pearson or Spearman, depending of the case, whether it was to determine the statistical significance or correlation, respectably. A level of statistical significance of p> 0,05 was considered. A significant increase of the body mass index (BMI) was observed, bigger thorax dimensions, PDA to full pulmonary capacity (FPC) and PME to FPC and residual volume. In the ventilatory function there was a significant increase of maximal expiratory pressure (MEP), maximal inspiratory pressure (MIP), inspiratory capacity (IC) and FPC. There were also correlations that vary from good to excellent between the diameter and perimeter of the thorax and IC and FMP, among the swimmers. Thus, it is concluded that relations exist between the anthropometrical of the thorax and the ventilatory function in swimmers of the Universidad Católica del Maule, Talca, Chile.

The objective of this study was to describe the intrinsic muscles of the thoracic limb of the African lion (Panthera leo). For this purpose a fixed and preserved female specimen donated by the Metropolitan Zoo in Santiago, Chile, was used. The dissection was carried out, from proximal to distal, considering the four topographical regions of that limb: Scapular girdle, arm, forearm and hand. Anatomical findings observed are discusses and compared to those described for the domestic cat and works by other authors in ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), puma (Puma concolor) and the species under study. The purpose of this work was to contribute to the knowledge of the anatomy of this exotic species, with medical and surgical projections.

RESUMO

Occurrence patterns are partly shaped by the affinity of species with habitat conditions. For winged organisms, flight-related attributes are vital for ecological performance. However, due to the different reproductive roles of each sex, we expect divergence in flight energy budget, and consequently different selection responses between sexes. We used tropical frugivorous butterflies as models to investigate coevolution between flight morphology, sex dimorphism and vertical stratification. We studied 94 species of Amazonian fruit-feeding butterflies sampled in seven sites across 3341 ha. We used wing-thorax ratio as a proxy for flight capacity and hierarchical Bayesian modelling to estimate stratum preference. We detected a strong phylogenetic signal in wing-thorax ratio in both sexes. Stouter fast-flying species preferred the canopy, whereas more slender slow-flying species preferred the understorey. However, this relationship was stronger in females than in males, suggesting that female phenotype associates more intimately with habitat conditions. Within species, males were stouter than females and sexual dimorphism was sharper in understorey species. Because trait-habitat relationships were independent from phylogeny, the matching between flight morphology and stratum preference is more likely to reflect adaptive radiation than shared ancestry. This study sheds light on the impact of flight and sexual dimorphism on the evolution and ecological adaptation of flying organisms.

RESUMO

We describe a new species of an ornithischian dinosaur, Isaberrysaura mollensis gen. et sp. nov. The specimen, consisting in an almost complete skull and incomplete postcranium was collected from the marine-deltaic deposits of the Los Molles Formation (Toarcian-Bajocian), being the first reported dinosaur for this unit, one of the oldest from Neuquén Basin, and the first neornithischian dinosaur known from the Jurassic of South America. Despite showing a general stegosaurian appearance, the extensive phylogenetic analysis carried out depicts Isaberrysaura mollensis gen. et sp. nov. as a basal ornithopod, suggesting that both Thyreophora and neornithischians could have achieved significant convergent features. The specimen was preserved articulated and with some of its gut content place in the middle-posterior part of the thoracic cavity. Such stomach content was identified as seeds, most of them belonging to the Cycadales group. This finding reveals a possible and unexpected role of this ornithischian species as seed-dispersal agent.

RESUMO

Among the Brazilian crocodilian, Caiman crocodilus crocodilus is widely distributed, given its adaptation to diverse habitats and their generalist diet. Information about the reproductive and ethological character of this species is abundant, whereas morphological data are still scarce. This study aimed to identify and report the muscles and their origin and the insertion into the pectoral and forelimb of C. crocodilus crocodilus. We used two male specimens, adults, belonging to the collection of the UFG Jataí. We performed usual procedures for dissection and further individualization, withdrawal of members, and observation of muscle origins and insertions. The musculature of C. crocodilus crocodilus generally conservative is similar to C. latirostris and A. mississippiensis. The muscles of the pectoral girdle showed little variation among crocodilians. In the forelimb, the triceps muscle has five distinct heads and biceps has only one. The extensor and flexor surface of the hand showed similar topography to A. mississippiensis. We described some differences in the origin and insertion of certain muscles, as well as the classification and topography of some flexor and extensor muscles in the forearm segment. The distal segments showed more variations, which probably reflects the variety of locomotor habits among crocodilians
