Background: Selenium supply plays a major role in calf rearing, as a deficiency can lead to health problems, economic loss, and even death. Therefore, postnatal selenium injections are often administered as a preventive measure. Objective: In this study, we examined the serum selenium concentrations of healthy and sick calves within the first days of life. Further, serum concentrations after injection with selenium were determined. Animals and procedure: Serum selenium concentrations from 75 calves were measured until the 10th d of life and the differences between sick and healthy calves were investigated. The variations in selenium concentration were analyzed 3 and 6 d after subcutaneous injection of 5.5 mg sodium selenite in 32 calves.To compare serum concentrations between healthy and sick calves, an independent samples t-test was used. For unequal variances, the Satterthwaite method was used; and for equal variances, the pooled sample variance was used. To analyze the statistical differences between the concentrations at different time points, the data were log-transformed and the Bonferroni correction was used. Results: The mean initial selenium concentration was 46 ± 37 µg/L. There was no statistically significant difference (P = 0.60) between sick (46 ± 34 µg/L) and healthy (46 ± 47 µg/L) calves. Serum selenium concentrations 3 and 6 d after injection of calves over 3 samples were 62 ± 19 µg/L and 50 ± 13 µg/L, respectively. Calves with an initial serum concentration of ≥ 72 µg/L showed a decrease of serum selenium concentration despite the injection. Conclusion and clinical relevance: Newborn calves showed a high variation in selenium concentration that was not influenced by health status. A single injection of 5.5 mg of sodium selenite did increase the selenium concentration in calves with selenium undersupply. After injection, none of the calves showed serum concentrations above the reference range for adult cattle. Therefore, the indication for a selenium injection can be interpreted generously if selenium undersupply is suspected.


Concentrations sériques de sélénium chez les veaux nouveau-nés : influence de l'injection postnatale de sélénium et de l'état de santé. Contexte: L'apport en sélénium joue un rôle majeur dans l'élevage des veaux, car une carence peut entraîner des problèmes de santé, des pertes économiques et même la mort. Par conséquent, des injections postnatales de sélénium sont souvent administrées à titre préventif. Objectif: Dans cette étude, nous avons examiné les concentrations sériques de sélénium de veaux sains et malades au cours des premiers jours de vie. De plus, les concentrations sériques après injection de sélénium ont été déterminées. Animaux et procédure: Les concentrations sériques de sélénium de 75 veaux ont été mesurées jusqu'au 10e jour de vie et les différences entre les veaux malades et sains ont été étudiées. Les variations de concentration en sélénium ont été analysées 3 et 6 jours après l'injection sous-cutanée de 5,5 mg de sélénite de sodium chez 32 veaux.Pour comparer les concentrations sériques entre les veaux sains et malades, un test t sur échantillons indépendants a été utilisé. Pour les variances inégales, la méthode de Satterthwaite a été utilisée; et pour des variances égales, la variance de l'échantillon groupé a été utilisée. Pour analyser les différences statistiques entre les concentrations à différents moments, les données ont été transformées par logarithme et la correction de Bonferroni a été utilisée. Résultats: La concentration initiale moyenne en sélénium était de 46 ± 37 µg/L. Il n'y avait pas de différence statistiquement significative (P = 0,60) entre les veaux malades (46 ± 34 µg/L) et sains (46 ± 47 µg/L). Les concentrations sériques de sélénium 3 et 6 jours après l'injection des veaux sur 3 échantillons étaient respectivement de 62 ± 19 µg/L et de 50 ± 13 µg/L. Les veaux avec une concentration sérique initiale ≥ 72 µg/L ont montré une diminution de la concentration sérique en sélénium malgré l'injection. Conclusion et pertinence clinique: Les veaux nouveau-nés ont montré une forte variation de la concentration en sélénium qui n'était pas influencée par l'état de santé. Une injection unique de 5,5 mg de sélénite de sodium a augmenté la concentration de sélénium chez les veaux présentant un apport insuffisant en sélénium. Après l'injection, aucun veau n'a présenté de concentrations sériques supérieures à la plage de référence pour les bovins adultes. Par conséquent, l'indication d'une injection de sélénium peut être interprétée de manière généreuse si un apport insuffisant en sélénium est suspecté.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

Introduction: Photoaging-induced skin damage leads to appearance issues and dermatoma. Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) possess high antioxidant properties but are prone to inactivation. In this study, human serum albumin/SeNPs (HSA-SeNPs) were synthesized for enhanced stability. Methods: HSA-SeNPs were prepared by self-assembling denatured human serum albumin and inorganic selenite. The cytotoxicity of HSA-SeNPs was assessed using the MTT method. Cell survival and proliferation rates were tested to observe the protective effect of HSA-SeNPs on human skin keratinocytes against photoaging. Simultaneously, ICR mice were used for animal experiments. H&E and Masson trichromatic staining were employed to observe morphological changes in skin structure and collagen fiber disorders after UVB irradiation. Quantitative RT-PCR was utilized to measure changes in mRNA expression levels of factors related to collagen metabolism, inflammation, oxidative stress regulation, and senescence markers. Results: The HSA-SeNPs group exhibited significantly higher survival and proliferation rates of UVB-irradiated keratinocytes than the control group. Following UVB irradiation, the back skin of ICR mice displayed severe sunburn with disrupted collagen fibers. However, HSA-SeNPs demonstrated superior efficacy in alleviating these symptoms compared to SeNPs alone. In a UVB-irradiated mice model, mRNA expression of collagen type I and III was dysregulated while MMP1, inflammatory factors, and p21 mRNA expression were upregulated; concurrently Nrf2 and Gpx1 mRNA expression were downregulated. In contrast, HSA-SeNPs maintained the mRNA expression of those factors to be stable In addition, the level of SOD decreased, and MDA elevated significantly in the skin after UVB irradiation, but no significant differences in SOD and MDA levels between the HSA-SeNPs group with UVB irradiation and the UVB-free untreated group. Discussion: HSA-SeNPs have more anti-photoaging effects on the skin than SeNPs, including the protective effects on skin cell proliferation, cell survival, and structure under photoaging conditions. HSA-SeNPs can be used to protect skin from photoaging and repair skin injury caused by UVB exposure.

The association between dietary selenium intake and glaucoma remains unclear. Using data from the 2005 to 2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), this study aimed to investigate the relationship between glaucoma and dietary selenium intake. The study included subjects aged 40 years or older who participated in the NHANES dietary intake interview and vision health questionnaire. Diagnosis of glaucoma based on self-reporting or fundus imaging. To investigate the relationship between daily selenium consumption and glaucoma, logistic regression analyses were employed. The potential linear relationship was found using smooth curve fitting. Subgroup analyses were also used. We found higher dietary selenium intake was associated with an increased risk of glaucoma (odds ratio, 1.39; 95% confidence intervals,1.07-1.81) on multivariable analysis. A linear association was found between dietary selenium intake and the occurrence of glaucoma in this population (Pnon-linearity = 0.951). Subgroup analyses showed a stable correlation between dietary selenium intake and the occurrence of glaucoma (all P for interaction > .05).This is the first study to look at the connection between dietary selenium intake and glaucoma based on the data from the 2005 to 2008 NHANES. Our findings suggested that dietary selenium intake maybe positively correlated with the risk of glaucoma in adults older than 40 years old. To find out the potential relationship between dietary selenium intake and glaucoma, More longitudinal studies are required.

Background: Due to their efficient insulation, lack of sweat glands, relatively quick metabolic rate, and heightened sensitivity to heat, the poultry industry faces a serious problem with heat stress. Combining vitamins has been demonstrated to be more effective than implementing a single vitamin in reducing the effects of heat stress. Aim: This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the multivitamin combination in feed on the growth performance, egg quality, and antioxidant enzymes in laying hens exposed to heat stress. Methods: A total of 28 Isa Brown strains aged 18 weeks were randomly designated into seven groups with four replications, i.e., (C-) normal temperature group, (C+) heat stress group, and the others with the administration of vitamin A and E (AE), vitamin K and C (KC), vitamin C and E (CE), vitamin E and selenium (ESE), and vitamin C and folic acid (CAF). Feed intake, feed efficiency, eggshell thickness, shape index, haugh unit (HU), yolk, and albumen index were evaluated at 22, 23, 24, and 25 weeks. Meanwhile, antioxidant enzymes were quantified at 22 and 25 weeks. Results: As a result, feed intake was reported a significant improvement in the AE and CE groups compared to the C+ group. Meanwhile, the feed efficiency was reported to be efficient in the CE and ESE groups. Based on egg quality evaluation, we reported significant shell thickness in the CE, ESE, and CAF groups compared to the C+; yolk index was reported slightly significant results in the AE and CAF groups; albumen index and HU were reported to increase significantly in the CAF group. Meanwhile, superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), and GPx activity were ameliorated significantly in the ESE and CAF groups. Conclusion: Combinations of multivitamins can thereby enhance feed intake, feed efficiency, egg quality, and antioxidant activity. The CE, ESE, and CAF groups were found to have made equivalent improvements in the eggshell thickness, shape index, HU, yolk, and albumen index.

While selenium is a cofactor of several antioxidant enzymes against cancer and is essential for human health, its excess intake may also be harmful. Though a safe intake of selenium has recently been recommended, it is not well understood in the Asian population. We aimed to determine the association between dietary intake of selenium and cancer risk in a case-control study of 3758 incident cancer cases (i.e., stomach, colon, rectum, lung cancers, and other sites) and 2929 control subjects in Vietnam. Daily intake of selenium was derived from a semiquantitative food frequency questionnaire. The unconditional logistic regression model was used to calculate the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the association between selenium intake and cancer risk. We observed a U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk. A safe intake ranged from 110.8 to 124.4 µg/day (mean 117.8 µg/day). Compared to individuals with the safe intake of selenium, individuals with the lowest intake (i.e., 27.8-77.2 µg/day) were associated with an increased risk of cancer (OR = 3.78, 95% CI 2.89-4.95) and those with the highest intake (169.1-331.7 µg/day) also had an increased cancer risk (OR = 1.86, 95% CI 1.45-2.39). A U-shaped pattern of association between selenium intake and cancer risk was stronger among participants with body mass index (BMI) < 23 kg/m2 and never smokers than BMI ≥ 23 kg/m2 and ever smokers (P'sheterogeneity = 0.003 and 0.021, respectively) but found in both never and ever-drinkers of alcohol (Pheterogeneity = 0.001). A U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk was seen in cancer sites of the stomach, colon, rectum, and lung cancers. In summary, we found a U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk and a safe selenium intake (mean: 117.8 µg/day) in the Vietnamese population. Further mechanistic investigation is warranted to understand better a U-shaped association between selenium intake and cancer risk.

The present study evaluated the use of green-synthesized selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs), using the microalgae Pediastrum boryanum as a diet additive in aquaculture to improve the growth performance, health, and immune response of Nile tilapia. Nile tilapia were fed different concentrations of green SeNPs (79.26 nm) as follows: 0, 0.75, and 1.5 mg/kg of SeNPs for 8 weeks. Following the trial, growth performance, biochemical indices, antioxidant and pro-inflammatory cytokine-related genes, and tissue histological examinations were performed. The study showed that SeNPs significantly improved (P < 0.05) growth performance and innate immune parameters (P < 0.001, IgM, and lysozyme) at both supplemented doses compared with the control. The protein profile and liver function enzymes were normal compared with those in the control group (P > 0.05). Serum malondialdehyde and superoxide dismutase levels were not significantly changed, while reduced glutathione and catalase were significantly enhanced (P < 0.01, P < 0.05) in the SeNPs 1.5 mg/kg compared to the control group. No inflammatory response was detected upon SeNP supplementation, as indicated by the absence of changes in the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokine genes. The earlier assays' results were histopathologically evidenced, where hepatic and splenic tissue architectures in SeNPs groups did not reveal any deviation from the control group. Our findings indicate that green selenium nanoparticles can potentially improve the growth and immunological response of Nile tilapia, offering opportunities for incorporating health benefits into functional foods and nutraceuticals, which corresponds to the increasing consumer interest in eco-friendly, environmentally sustainable dietary supplements.

OBJECTIVES: Selenium deficiency in patients with gastrointestinal diseases treated with long-term central venous nutrition is a clinical problem. Only injectable selenium is approved in Japan, and oral selenium preparations are prepared in hospitals from reagents, but their efficacy and safety are unknown. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study investigating the relationship between selenium administration and oral selenium formulations and adverse events. RESULTS: In this study, 239 selenium-treated cases and 220 selenium-untreated cases adjusted for patient background were selected as a reference group. The median (interquartile range, IQR) age was 1.3 (0.4-4.4) and 1.3 (0.3-4.5) years, respectively; gastrointestinal diseases were most common in 110 (46.0%) and 104 (47.3%) cases. The median (IQR) duration of treatment or observation with oral selenium was 446 (128-1157) and 414 (141-1064) days, respectively. The median (IQR) dose per body weight at the maintenance dose was 2.6 (1.7-3.9) µg/kg, and the median (IQR) serum selenium concentration at the maintenance dose was 8.5 (7.0-10.6) µg/mL within the upper tolerated dose limit and approximately the reference range. There was no difference in selenium dose, serum selenium concentration, or serum-selenium-concentration-to-dose ratio (C/D ratio) for adverse events. The incidence of adverse events was compared with that of patients not treated with selenium. CONCLUSIONS: An oral selenium preparation administered below the upper tolerated dose limit can be used effectively and safely in pediatric patients.

BACKGROUND: This research investigated the impact of selenium-nanoparticles (Se-NPs) supplemented in sunflower meal (SM)-based diets on digestibility, mineral absorption, and growth performance of Catla catla. Se-NPs were added to seven test meals in varying amounts (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and 3 mgkg- 1). A total of 315 fish were evenly allocated three replicate tanks, with 15 fish per tank, and given diets equivalent to (5%) of their wet biomass daily for a period of 90 days. RESULTS: The test diet (T-D) supplemented with 1.5 mgkg- 1 Se-NPs yielded remarkable results, including a significant increase in mean weight gain (14 g), an impressive average weight gain percentage (208%), a 100% survival rate, with no mortality observed and the highest specific growth rate (1.25). Moreover, 1.5 mgkg- 1 Se-NPs (T-D-IV) demonstrated superior nutritional digestibility (CP, 76%; CF, 79% and GE, 74%). Additionally, the diet 1.5 mgkg- 1 Se-NPs showed enhanced mineral absorption (K, P, Ca, Na, Zn, Cu and Fe) than other diets. CONCLUSION: It was practically proven that the growth indices, nutrient absorption, and mineral status of C. catla were significantly improved by Se-NPs supplemented SM-based diets, with the optimum level of supplementation being 1.5 mgkg- 1.

This study aimed to estimate the hepatic and immune ameliorating potential of extracted bovine lactoferrin (LF), Selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) or their combination (LF/SeNPs) against bleomycin (BLM) induced hepatic injury. Fifty adult male rats (160-200 g) were equally divided into five groups: (1) the saline control group, (2) BLM-injected (15 mg/kg twice a week, ip), and (3-5) groups treated orally with LF (200 mg/kg/day), SeNPs (0.0486 mg/kg/day) or LF/SeNPs combination (200.0486 mg/kg/day) for 6 weeks post BLM-intoxication. Blood and liver samples were subjected to biochemical, histopathological, and immunohistochemical analyses. The results revealed that BLM caused a significant increase in hepatic lipid peroxidation and nitric oxide, as well as serum markers of liver functions (AST, ALT and GGT activities), and levels of GM-CSF, CD4, TNF-α, IL-1ß, TGF-ß1, fibronectin, triglycerides, cholesterol and LDL-C. Additionally, hepatic glutathione, Na+/K+-ATPase, and glutathione peroxidase, as well as serum HDL-C, total protein and albumin levels were significantly reduced. Moreover, BLM injection resulted in marked histopathological alterations and severe expression of caspase 3. Post-treatment of BLM-intoxicated rats with LF, SeNPs or LF/SeNPs combination obviously improved the BLM-induced hepatic damages; this was achieved from the marked modulations in the mentioned parameters, besides improving the histopathological hepatic architecture. It is worth mentioning that LF/SeNPs exerted the greatest potency. In conclusion, the obtained results demonstrated that LF, SeNPs and LF/SeNPs succeeded in attenuating the BLM-induced hepatic dysfunction. Therefore, these supplements might be used to protect against drug-associated side effects.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element. Depending on concentration, Se can manifest both beneficial and harmful effects on the cell and can have both oxidative and antioxidant effects. Because the therapeutic index for Se is very narrow and it can depend on the form of Se used, we aimed to investigate the potential safety and side effects of inorganic Se on kidney function and structure in rats. After 8 days of treatment, no detectable signs of microscopic changes or oxidative stress in kidney tissue were observed. We detected a moderate increase in urea and creatinine levels in the blood as a sign of a slight decrease in kidney function. The most notable changes in our study were morphometric alterations in proximal tubules and glomeruli, both of which were considerably enlarged. The short-term application of inorganic Se to rats in a supratherapeutic dose induced mild functional and ultrastructural changes in the kidneys. The dose of inorganic Se used could be considered relatively safe for short-term application in situations where Se could be beneficial to the organism, such as the usage of known nephrotoxicants or high levels of oxidative stress in the body.

Subfertility is a multifactorial disorder that affects the rabbit production industry. However, subfertility may be treated by using a simple intervention such as vitamin supplementation. Vitamin E and selenium (Se) are potent antioxidants that protect the male reproductive system. The aim of this study is to determine the effects of vitamin E and Se on testicular size, semen quality and freezability, antioxidant activity, testosterone levels, and fertility in subfertile rabbits. Twenty-one New Zealand rabbits were classified as subfertile rabbits based on their semen characteristics and fertility records. The rabbits were randomly allocated into 3 equal groups (G1: control; G2: injected with Vit E 100 IU/head + Se 0.1 mg/kg b.w.; G3: injected with Vit E 200 IU/head + Se 0.2 mg/kg b.w. once weekly for 8 weeks).Once weekly for 8 W, blood samples were collected to measure serum testosterone level and total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and semen samples were collected by artificial vagina to assess the quality of fresh and frozen semen. At the 8th week of the study, 150 multiparous does were artificially inseminated with fresh semen to assess the fertility of rabbits after treatment; 50 does for each group. At the end of the study, rabbits were slaughtered to assess testicular morphometry. Fresh and post-thaw semen quality parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in G3in comparison with G2and G1, respectively. Also, testosterone level was significantly (p < 0.05) increased at the 2nd week in G3in comparison with other groups. Conception and kindling rates were significantly (p < 0.05) higher in does which were inseminated with semen fromG3. In conclusion, injection of vitamin E and selenium at a higher dose (G3) improved the testicular morphology, quality of fresh and post-thaw semen, and most importantly, the fertility of subfertile rabbits.

Selenium (Se) deficiency is associated with the development of Keshan disease, a cardiomyopathy associated with massive cardiac immune cell infiltration that can lead to heart failure (HF). The purpose of this study was to determine whether high Se diet can attenuate systolic overload-induced cardiopulmonary inflammation and HF. Briefly, transverse aortic constriction (TAC)-induced cardiopulmonary oxidative stress, inflammation, left ventricular (LV) dysfunction, and pulmonary remodeling were determined in male mice fed with either high Se diet or normal Se diet. High Se diet had no detectable effect on LV structure and function in mice under control conditions, but high Se diet significantly protected mice from TAC-induced LV hypertrophy, dysfunction, increase of lung weight, and right ventricular hypertrophy. As compared with mice treated with normal Se diet, high Se diet also reduced TAC-induced LV cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, fibrosis, leukocyte infiltration, pulmonary inflammation, pulmonary fibrosis, and pulmonary micro-vessel muscularization. In addition, high Se diet significantly ameliorated TAC-induced accumulation and activation of pulmonary F4/80+ macrophages, and activation of dendritic cells. Interestingly, high Se diet also significantly attenuated TAC-induced activation of pulmonary CD4+ and CD8+ T cells. Moreover, we found that TAC caused a significant increase in cardiac and pulmonary ROS production, increases of 4-hydroxynonenal (4-HNE) and 3-nitrotyrosine (3-NT), as well as a compensatory increases of LV glutathione peroxidase 1 (GPX1) and 4 (GPX4) in mice fed with normal Se diet. Above changes were diminished in mice fed with high Se diet. Collectively, these data demonstrated that high Se diet significantly attenuated systolic pressure overload-induced cardiac oxidative stress, inflammation, HF development, and consequent pulmonary inflammation and remodeling.

Selenium (Se), a trace element, is vital for the maintenance of cellular redox balance, thyroid hormone metabolism, inflammation, and immunity. Aeromonas hydrophila (A. hydrophila) is a common Gram-negative conditional pathogenic bacterium in fish culture, posing a serious threat to intensive aquaculture. Our study investigated the influence of dietary Se on the intestinal immune function of grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) and the related regulatory mechanisms. The 2160 healthy juvenile grass carp (9.76 ± 0.005 g) were randomly assigned to 6 test groups of 6 replicates each, and fed graded selenomethionine (0.05, 0.20, 0.40, 0.61, 0.77, 0.98 mg Se/kg diet) for 70 days and then injected with A. hydrophila for a 6-day attack test. The results indicated that appropriate Se levels (0.40 mg/kg diet) alleviated intestinal damage caused by A. hydrophila and increased intestinal immune substances C3 and C4 levels as well as the activity of acid phosphatase (ACP) and lysozyme (LZ) (P > 0.05). Appropriate levels of Se (0.40 mg/kg-0.61 mg/kg diet) decreased intestinal pro-inflammatory cytokines (IFN-γ2, IL-6, IL-12p35, IL-17 A F and IL-17D) mRNA levels (P > 0.05) and increased intestinal anti-inflammatory factors (TGF-ß1, IL-4/13A, IL-4/13B, IL-10 and IL-22) mRNA levels (P > 0.05) in juvenile grass carp. Further studies revealed that Se (0.40 mg/kg-0.61 mg/kg diet) inhibited intestinal endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS)-related signaling pathway. Furthermore, we found that appropriate levels of Se (0.40 mg/kg-0.61 mg/kg diet) inhibited intestinal autophagy in juvenile grass carp, which may be related to ULK1, Beclin 1, ATG5, ATG12, LC3, and P62. In conclusion, appropriate levels of Se can alleviate intestinal inflammation and inhibit ERS and autophagy in juvenile grass carp. A quadratic regression analysis of intestinal ACP and LZ also indicated that the Se requirements of juvenile grass carp were 0.59 and 0.51 mg/kg, respectively.

The current study explored the influence of dietary supplementation of Chlorella vulgaris dried powder (CV) with zinc-oxide-nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs), and/or selenium-nanoparticles (Se-NPs) on broilers' growth, antioxidant capacity, immune status, histological responses, and gene expression of some related genes. Several 200 one-day-old Cobb-500 male chicks were distributed into 5 groups with four replicates each. In the 1st group, birds were fed the basal diet (BD). In the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th groups, birds received the BD supplemented with CV only, CV + ZnO-NPs, CV + Se-NPs, and CV + ZnO-NPs + Se-NPs, respectively. The CV dried powder, ZnO-NPs, and Se-NPs were added to the BD at a rate of 1 g, 40 mg, and 0.3 mg/kg diet, respectively. After 6 weeks of feeding, increases in final body weights (P < 0.05), body weight gain (P < 0.05), and feed intake (P < 0.05) were linked with improvements in FCR (P < 0.05) and intestinal morphometric indices (P < 0.05), and marked up-regulations of MYOS (P < 0.05), GHR (P < 0.05), and IGF (P < 0.05) genes were established. Additionally, distinct increases in antioxidant enzyme activities of SOD (P < 0.05), and GPX (P < 0.05) with increases in the mRNA copies of their genes were measured. Moreover, slight improvement in immunity indices, WBCs count (P > 0.05), and phagocytic and lysozyme activities (P > 0.05) were found. However, distinct increases in phagocytic index (P < 0.05) and up-regulations of IL-1ß and TNF, and down-regulation of IL-10 mRNA levels were reported (P < 0.05). These findings were prominent in the case of the separate supplementation of CV with ZnO-NPs or Se-NPs confirming the synergistic mechanisms of CV with ZnO-NPs or Se-NPs. Thus, the synergetic supplementation of CV with ZnO-NPs, or Se-NPs in the broiler's diet could augment their growth and antioxidant response.

Both copper and zinc are known to be important for maintaining health, but most research has focused on deficiencies of these elements. Recent studies have shown that high levels of Cu can be toxic, especially to the cardiovascular (CV) system. However, little research has been done on the effects of higher levels of Zn on the CV system. In this study, male Wistar rats aged 12 months were given a diet with twice the recommended daily allowance of zinc (31.8 mg/kg of diet) and compared to a control group (15.9 mg/kg of diet) after 8 weeks. Blood plasma and internal organs of both groups were examined for levels of copper, zinc, selenium and iron, as well as several key enzymes. Aortic rings from both groups were also examined to determine vascular functioning. There were very few changes in the vascular system functioning after chronic exposure to zinc, and only one enzyme, heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) was elevated, whereas vascular contraction to noradrenaline decreased with no changes in vasodilation to acetylcholine. Of the micronutrients, zinc and selenium were elevated in the blood plasma, while copper decreased. Meanwhile, the total antioxidant status increased. These were not observed in the liver. Therefore, it is proposed that there is a mechanism in place within the vascular system to protect against the overproduction of heme, caused by chronic zinc exposure.

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of dietary supplementation of nanoparticles of Selenium (Nano-Se) on productive performance, nutrient digestibility, carcass criteria, selenium retention, blood biochemistry, and histopathological examination of broiler chicken. A total of 192 1-day-old male broiler chickens (Cobb 500) were randomly assigned to one of four treatment diets, with each diet given to six replicates of eight chicks. The birds were randomly assigned to one of four treatment groups, each of which included Nano-Se at levels of 0, 0.2, 0.3, or 0.4 mg/kg. The feeding experiment lasted 35 days. Nano-Se addition to broiler diets at 0.2 and 0.3 mg/kg enhanced body weight and body weight gain linearly compared to the control diet and 0.4 mg/kg. The apparent digestibility coefficient of ether extracts linearly increased with increasing Nano-Se levels up to 0.4 mg/kg. Increasing Nano-Se decreased serum cholesterol, triglycerides, alanine aminotransaminase, aspartate aminotransaminase, and creatinine in broiler chickens. Also, serum antioxidants showed a significant increase with increasing Nano-Se levels. As Nano-Se levels were supplemented, improvements in cooking loss, water-holding capacity, and antioxidants were observed as compared to the control. Additionally, a noticeable improvement in meat quality was observed regarding the obtained meat characters. It was preferred to use low doses of Nano-Se (0.3 mg/kg), as tissue retention of Se for both meat and liver was more comparable to the control. In conclusion, nutritional supplementation with Nano-Se increased growth performance, nutrient digestibility, selenium retention, meat quality, blood biochemistry, histological indices, and antioxidant activity of broiler chickens. Overall, the best performance of broilers was observed with Nano-Se supplementation at 0.3 mg/kg, highlighting its potential as a novel supplement for broiler diets.

The important trace elements, copper and selenium, have diverse effects on human health. As well as other important roles in living tissues, these trace elements are toxic at high levels but are key constituents of various enzymes and proteins essential for maintaining physiological health. However, links between dietary intakes of these elements, particularly copper, and bone mineral density (BMD) in humans remain uncertain. This study aimed to investigate whether dietary intakes of copper and selenium are associated with BMD in women. Dietary intakes of copper and selenium were assessed for 575 women in the Geelong Osteoporosis Study, using a detailed semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire in conjunction with nutrition composition databases. Participants taking oral multivitamin preparations were excluded from analyses; 522 participants (ages 20-88 y) met the eligibility criteria. BMD at multiple skeletal sites was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (Lunar DPX-L). Separate multivariable regression models were developed to identify associations between copper and selenium intakes and BMD, after adjustments for age, anthropometry, other dietary factors, medication use, and lifestyle factors. Median (interquartile range) daily intake for copper was 1.5 mg (1.2-1.9) and for selenium, 72 µg (57-90). Low intakes (lowest tertile versus pooled upper tertiles) of copper and selenium were consistently associated with lower BMD at multiple skeletal sites. Fully adjusted models identified small but statistically significant differences in BMD, ranging from 1.8% to 4.0% for low copper intakes and 1.4% to 4.0% for low selenium intakes. Low dietary intakes of copper and selenium were both independently associated with lower BMD, at least in this sample of women. The results contribute to the evidence base for informing dietary recommendations for these trace elements with respect to their contributions to optimal bone health.

Background: Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a widespread respiratory condition characterized by chronic inflammation. Selenium, an essential trace element, possesses anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. However, the diet is often complex, and the absence of one nutrient may indicate a concurrent deficiency in others. Therefore, inadequate dietary selenium intake may suggest deficiencies in other elements. Despite its potential benefits, there is a scarcity of evidence regarding the association between dietary selenium intake and COPD. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the potential association between dietary selenium intake and COPD among American adults. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted in the United States from 1999 to 2018. Multivariate logistic regression, restricted cubic spline analyses, subgroup analysis, and sensitivity analysis were conducted to assess the correlation between dietary selenium intake and COPD. Results: A total of 39,654 participants were included in the study. The adjusted odds ratio (OR) for COPD in the highest selenium intake group (T3, > 122.0 µg/day) was 0.80 (95% CI: 0.71-0.91, p < 0.001) compared to the lowest intake group (T1, < 81.6 µg/day). Dietary selenium intake exhibited a linear negative correlation with COPD. Among participants reporting selenium supplementation, a similar negative association persisted. Conclusion: This study observed a negative correlation between dietary selenium intake and COPD among American adults, indicating a possible association between higher selenium intake and a lower risk of COPD.

Selenium is an essential micronutrient for ruminants, which participates in the optimal functioning of proteins and enzymes that can combat oxidative stress in the body; however, its toxicity is documented in different species. The objective of this work was to describe macroscopic and microscopic lesions in lambs intoxicated with selenium administered through intraruminal boluses. The main lesions at necropsy were pulmonary oedema; the myocardial surface presented multifocal pale areas; the thyroid and thymus glands were decreased in size, and areas of necrosis, haemorrhage and hyperkeratosis were observed in the reticulum and rumen. At the microscopic level, congestion, haemorrhage, oedema and hyaline membranes were observed in the lung; hepatic congestion, haemorrhage, degeneration and necrosis; degeneration and necrosis of the reticulum mucosa, as well as areas of hyperplasia and hyperkeratosis; myocardial degeneration, necrosis and fibrosis; congestion, haemorrhage, degeneration and renal tubular necrosis; thyroid follicular atrophy and thymic cortical atrophy. This study evidenced the main lesions related to selenium poisoning in lambs supplemented with the mineral through intraruminal boluses.

BACKGROUND: High doses of selenium are associated with heart disease prevalence in high-risk areas. Cardiac myosin light chain kinase (cMLCK) is an essential enzyme for normal function of heart tissue. Therefore, we studied the effect of high doses of selenium on the expression of cMLCK gene and its protein in normal heart tissue in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty male rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, Se 0.3mg/kg, Se 1.5mg/kg, and Se 3mg/kg. Sodium-selenite was administered orally into drinking water for 20 weeks. Se levels of heart tissue were measured by atomic absorption. Serum creatine phosphokinase (CPK) and total serum antioxidant capacity were measured. Moreover, the concentration of MLCK protein and the gene expression level of cMLCK in normal heart tissue were analyzed. RESULTS: Excess Se in dietary can significantly increase CPK. Se concentration of heart tissue in the Se 3mg/kg group was significantly higher than the control. cMLCK mRNA levels were decreased by 0.3mg/kg and 3mg/kg sodium selenite intake. There was no significant difference between the three groups for total antioxidant capacity and MLCK protein. CONCLUSION: High concentrations of selenium can probably effect on normal function of the heart tissue by changing the expression levels of cMLCK.
