SUMMARY: In 2004, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, one of major species in commercial fisheries in Brazil was included in the list of brazilian overfished species and, in 2006, two cryptic species were identified in the Atlantic Ocean by molecular approaches: Xiphopenaeus sp. I and II. In 2019, Carvalho-Batista et al. described both Xiphopenaeus sp. I and Xiphopenaeus sp. II and these species were named X. kroyeri and X. dincao, respectively. This study aimed at performing morphometric analysis in order to identify potential fishing stocks of X. kroyeri sensu strictum along Brazilian coast. The results obtained separate Caravelas, Atafona and Balneário Camboriú from all the other populations studied and showed three groups: Ubatuba, Nova Almeida; Ubatuba, Cananéia; Ubatuba, Santos. These results indicate that the maritime limits practiced in closed seasons along Brazil are embracing the detected morphometric stock boundaries observed for Xiphopenaeus kroyeris.s.


RESUMEN: En 2004, Xiphopenaeus kroyeri, una de las principales especies de la pesca comercial en Brasil, fue incluida en la lista de especies brasileñas sobre explotadas y, en 2006, se identificaron dos especies crípticas en el Océano Atlántico mediante enfoques moleculares: Xiphopenaeus sp. I y II. En 2019, Carvalho-Batista et al. describieron tanto Xiphopenaeus sp. I y Xiphopenaeus sp. II y a estas especies denominaron X. kroyeri y X. dincao, respectivamente. Este estudio tuvo como objetivo realizar un análisis morfométrico con el fin de identificar posibles poblaciones de pesca de X. kroyeri sensu strictum a lo largo de la costa brasileña. Los resultados obtenidos en Caravelas, Atafona y Balneário Camboriú se separaron de todas las demás poblaciones estudiadas y mostraron tres grupos: Ubatuba, Nova Almeida; Ubatuba, Cananéia; Ubatuba, Santos. Estos resultados indican que los límites marítimos practicados en temporadas de veda a lo largo de Brasil están abarcando los límites de stock morfométricos observados para Xiphopenaeus kroyeris.s.

Farfantepenaeus brasiliensis and F. paulensis are the most exploited shrimps of SE-S Brazilian coast. Our aim was to verify if adjacent nursery areas with different environmental condition (Sepetiba and Guanabara bays, SE Brazil) influence on shrimp populations (eg, CPUE) and body shapes. Samplings were carried out during 12 months in those bays ca. 85 Km far from each other. Carapace length (CL), total body length (TL), wet weight, abdomen size and TL/CL ratio were used to analyze variations in shape through regressions. In general, F. brasiliensis was 4 to 6 times more abundant than F. paulensis. The sex ratio differed from 1:1 in F. brasiliensis in both bays, with dominance of females, largest catches occur in autumn. However, differences in size and morphology were found between bays, mainly regarding the TL/CL ratio. Shrimps in Sepetiba Bay have higher TL/CL showing a more "elongated shape" (larger abdomen) when compared to those from Guanabara Bay. Results suggest the existence of an estuary vs shrimp morphology relationship which results in differences in body shape even in spatially close areas. TL/CL ratio has proven useful for assessing shrimp populations differences and might be tested for tracking the origin of adult shrimps stocks at the coast.

This study aimed to evaluate the viability of supplementing two diets for the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei with Lactobacillus plantarum. One using fish meal as a protein source and another using soy protein concentrate, as well as the effect of these formulations on shrimp intestinal microbiota. To assay probiotic viability in the formulated diets, the number of CFU g-1 was observed weekly over the course of four weeks. The viability of Lactobacillus plantarum in relation to the physical parameters of the diets, including stability, buoyancy, and expansion, was quantified. The effect of the diets on microbiota and intestinal tract morphology was determined by performing a 2x2 factorial experiment (two diets, with or without supplementation) in triplicate, totaling 12 experimental units, with five animals per unit, fed with 3.5% of biomass for 17 days. The concentration of lactic acid bacteria decreased over time, irrespective of protein source. The diet with fishmeal as a protein source, independent of probiotic supplementation, presented good stability and did not disintegrate after four hours. In contrast, the diet with soy protein concentrate, supplemented or not, disintegrated between 2.5 and 3 hours, presenting low stability. All diets presented 0% buoyancy. The expansion rate was higher in diets with soy protein concentrate, but without the influence probiotic supplementation or interaction between the factors. In the in vivo assay, both supplemented diets showed greater total heterotrophic bacteria count than without probiotic; however, no difference in count was noted in diets with different protein source. Lactic acid bacteria were only observed in the shrimp fed diets supplemented with probiotic. Histology of the intestinal tract showed that all intestines had intact, well-developed and well-organized cells, irrespective of diet. Este trabalho objetivou avaliar viabilidade da suplementação de duas dietas ao camarão Litopenaeus vannamei com Lactobacillus plantarum. Uma usando farinha de peixe como fonte proteica e outra usando concentrado de proteico de soja, bem como o efeito destas formulações na microbiota intestinal de camarão. Para testar a viabilidade probiótica nas dietas, o número de UFC g-1 foi observado semanalmente ao longo de quatro semanas. A viabilidade de Lactobacillus plantarum em relação aos parâmetros físicos das dietas, incluindo estabilidade, flutuabilidade e expansão, foram testados. O efeito das dietas na microbiota e na morfologia do trato intestinal foi determinado por meio de um experimento fatorial 2x2 (duas dietas, com ou sem suplementação), em triplicata, totalizando 12 unidades experimentais, com cinco animais por unidade, alimentados com 3,5% de biomassa por 17 dias. A concentração de bactérias do ácido láctico diminuiu ao longo do tempo, independentemente da fonte de proteína. A dieta com farinha de peixe como fonte proteica, independente da suplementação probiótica, apresentou boa estabilidade e não se desintegrou após quatro horas. Although hypoxic aquatic environments cause negative effects on shrimp, these animals can withstand somewhat hypoxia, but the cellular mechanisms underlying this capacity are still poorly understood. In humans, mild hypoxia causes the induction of many proteins to allow cell survival. In contrast, apoptosis is induced during severe hypoxia leading to cell death. p53 is a key transcription factor that determines cells fate towards cell cycle arrest or induction of apoptosis in humans. The aim of this work was to study the role of p53 in cell cycle regulation and apoptosis in response to hypoxia in hepatopancreas of the white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. p53 was silenced by RNAi and afterwards the shrimp were exposed to hypoxia. Cdk-2 was used as indicator of cell cycle progression while caspase-3 expression and caspase activity were analyzed as indicators of apoptosis. p53 levels in hepatopancreas were significantly higher at 48 h after hypoxic treatment. Increased expression levels of Cdk-2 were found in p53-silenced shrimp after 24 and 48 h in the normoxic treatments as well as 48 h after hypoxia, indicating a possible role of p53 in cell cycle regulation. In response to hypoxia, unsilenced shrimp showed an increase in caspase-3 expression levels, however an increase was also observed in caspase activity at 24 h of normoxic conditions in p53-silenced shrimps. Taken together these results indicate the involvement of p53 in regulation of cell cycle and apoptosis in the white shrimp in response to hypoxia.

ABSTRACT This is the first study to evaluate in broad spatiotemporal scales the growth parameters and population structure of Rimapenaeus constrictus, a barely damaged species composing the bycatch from shrimp fishing in the Western Atlantic. The abundance and size-class frequency distribution, growth, longevity and sex ratio were evaluated from monthly samples obtained in the northern littoral of São Paulo state from Jan/1998 to Jun/2003. We measured 5,812 individuals in which the sex ratio was skewed toward females; this was more evident in size classes greater than 10 mm in CL (carapace length) (binomial test, p<0.05). We selected 16 growth cohorts of females, and 8 of males, the majority consisting of younger individual cohorts excluded from the fisheries closure period. Growth estimates resulted in a CL∞ of 17.42 mm, a growth coefficient of 0.008 and a longevity of 579 days (1.60 year) for females, as well as a CL∞ of 16.3 mm, a growth coefficient of 0.01 and a longevity of 425 days (1.17 year) for males. Our results provide information of incontestable relevance to our knowledge of fishing management. We therefore strongly recommend that the fisheries closure period be changed to protect this species' recruitment period and consequently its adult individuals.

Abstract:The pink shrimp, Farfantepenaeus duorarum is an important commercial species in the Gulf of Mexico, which supports significant commercial fisheries near Dry Tortugas, in Southern Florida and in Campeche Sound, Southern Gulf of Mexico. There is information about the nictemeral behavior of the pink shrimp related to sunset, what is crucial to more accurate estimation of shrimp population biomass, and to assess the potential of this resource and its proper management. To contribute to the knowledge and the population dynamics of the species, shrimp surveys were conducted in a nursery area near "El Cayo" in the Northeastern part of Terminos Lagoon, Mexico during October 2010. Three sampling sites with substrate covered by submerged vegetation were chosen; two set of samples were collected at each site, one in the morning and the other just after sunset. Three trawls were performed per sampling site using a small otter trawl. A total of 1 418 shrimp (between 5.5 to 28.8 mm Carapace Length (CL)) were collected during the study; 1 416 F. duorarum and only two individuals of Litopenaeus setiferus. Shrimps CL and Total Length (TL) were measured in mm and individuals were weighted to the nearest 0.01 g. In general, shrimp biomass and density were significantly higher in all sites during dusk (biomass= 46.36 g.100 m-2, n= 1 344), than daylight samples (biomass= 2.78 g.100 m-2, n= 72). The One-way ANOVA and the Tukey test performed to evaluate variability in CL found significant differences between sites (CL= 14.12 mm, 12.46 mm and 15.13 mm, for site 1, 2 and 3 respectively, F= 64.92, P < 0.001) which might be related to the substrate type. The length-weight relationships reflected positive allometric growth for juveniles but isometric for subadults and two nonlinear power functions were estimated (W= 0.0004CL3.157 for juveniles, and W= 0.0009CL2.902 for subadults). The results of the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test indicated that the Total Length - Carapace Length (TL-CL) relationships were significantly different between juveniles and subadults, and two linear equations (TL= 2.615 + 4.476CL and TL= 8.931 + 4.062CL for juveniles and subadults respectively) were fitted. It is important that population assessment takes into account the day or night period as a bias factor when sampling the abundance of the juveniles of F. duorarum in this important nursery ground of the Campeche Sound. ResumenEl camarón rosado Farfantepenaeus duorarum es una especie de importancia comercial en el Golfo de México, mantiene pesquerías comerciales relevantes cerca de Dry Tortugas en el Sureste de la Florida y en la Sonda de Campeche, Sureste del Golfo de México. Existe información acerca de la conducta nictemeral del camarón rosado relacionada con la puesta del sol, lo cual resulta crucial para una estimación más precisa de las poblaciones y de la biomasa así como para evaluar el potencial del recurso y de su adecuado manejo. Para contribuir con el conocimiento de la dinámica de poblaciones de esta especie de camarón, se realizó un estudio en una zona de cría cerca de "El Cayo", área del Noreste de la Laguna de Términos, México, durante octubre 2010. Se seleccionaron tres sitios de muestreo cubiertos con vegetación sumergida. En cada sitio se tomó una muestra en la mañana y otra justamente después de la puesta del sol. Se realizaron tres arrastres por sitio de muestreo usando una pequeña red de arrastre. Durante el estudio fueron recolectados un total de 1 418 camarones (entre 5.5 y 28.8 mm longitud del carapacho (LC)); 1 416 Farfantepenaeus duorarum y dos individuos de Litopenaeus setiferus. Se midió la LC y la longitud total (LT) de los camarones (mm) y se pesaron con una precisión de 0.01g. En general, la biomasa y la densidad fueron significativamente mayores en todos los sitios durante el anochecer (biomasa= 446.36 g.100 m-2, n= 1 344) que durante el día (biomasa= 2.78 g.100 m-2, n= 72). El ANOVA y la prueba Tukey realizada para evaluar la variación en LC en los diferentes sitios, mostraron diferencias significativas (LC= 14.12 mm, 12.46 mm, 15.13 mm, para los sitios 1, 2 and 3 respectivamente, F= 64.92, P < 0.001), lo cual puede estar relacionado con el tipo de sustrato. La relación de la longitud con el peso refleja un crecimiento alométrico positivo para los juveniles pero no para los subadultos por lo que se estimaron dos funciones no lineales (Peso= 0.0004LC3.157 para juveniles and Peso= 0.0009LC2.902 para subadultos). Los resultados del ANCOVA realizados indicaron que la relación Largo Total-Longitud del Carapacho (LT-LC) fue significativamente diferente entre juveniles y subadultos y se ajustaron a dos ecuaciones lineales (LT= 2.615 + 4.476LC y LT= 8.931 + 4.062 LC, para juveniles y subadultos respectivamente). Para la evaluación de la población es importante que se considere el momento del muestreo como un factor que afecta la estimación de la abundancia de juveniles de F. duorarum en esta importante zona de cría de la Sonda de Campeche.

The pink shrimp, Farfantepenaeus duorarum is an important commercial species in the Gulf of Mexico, which supports significant commercial fisheries near Dry Tortugas, in Southern Florida and in Campeche Sound, Southern Gulf of Mexico. There is information about the nictemeral behavior of the pink shrimp related to sunset, what is crucial to more accurate estimation of shrimp population biomass, and to assess the potential of this resource and its proper management. To contribute to the knowledge and the population dynamics of the species, shrimp surveys were conducted in a nursery area near "El Cayo" in the Northeastern part of Terminos Lagoon, Mexico during October 2010. Three sampling sites with substrate covered by submerged vegetation were chosen; two set of samples were collected at each site, one in the morning and the other just after sunset. Three trawls were performed per sampling site using a small otter trawl. A total of 1 418 shrimp (between 5.5 to 28.8 mm Carapace Length (CL)) were collected during the study; 1 416 F. duorarum and only two individuals of Litopenaeus setiferus. Shrimps CL and Total Length (TL) were measured in mm and individuals were weighted to the nearest 0.01 g. In general, shrimp biomass and density were significantly higher in all sites during dusk (biomass = 46.36 g.100 m-2, n = 1 344), than daylight samples (biomass = 2.78 g.100 m-2, n = 72). The One-way ANOVA and the Tukey test performed to evaluate variability in CL found significant differences between sites (CL = 14.12 mm, 12.46 mm and 15.13 mm, for site 1, 2 and 3 respectively, F = 64.92, P < 0.001) which might be related to the substrate type. The length-weight relationships reflected positive allometric growth for juveniles but isometric for subadults and two nonlinear power functions were estimated (W = 0.0004CL3.157 for juveniles, and W = 0.0009CL2.902 for subadults). The results of the analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) test indicated that the Total Length - Carapace Length (TL-CL) relationships were significantly different between juveniles and subadults, and two linear equations (TL = 2.615 + 4.476CL and TL = 8.931 + 4.062CL for juveniles and subadults respectively) were fitted. It is important that population assessment takes into account the day or night period as a bias factor when sampling the abundance of the juveniles of F. duorarum in this important nursery ground of the Campeche Sound.

The fishery on Penaeidae shrimp is done all over the Brazilian coast, especially the seabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri). It is captured in large quantities in the Southeast and Southern Brazil. In order to study the population structure of X. kroyeri from Anchieta Municipality, Espيrito Santo State, during the period from January to December 2008, monthly samplings with one-hour-long were conducted to verify the number of individuals, biomass, sex, total length and gonad maturity stage. The specimens had total length ranging from 2.96 to 9.96 cm, and females were larger than males. It is suggested that the population of X. kroyeri presents patterns of recruitment and reproduction similar to those of the Northeast region. The estimated size of first gonadal maturation was 4.5 and 6.9 cm for males and females, respectively. The fishing operates on a stock composed of predominantly adult males and juveniles and adult females. The mesh size of the nets and the high plant biomass in the fishing areas may be contributing to the increased catch of juveniles, undermining the recruitment of X. kroyeri.(AU)


A pesca de camarُes Penaeidae é realizada em todo o litoral brasileiro, com destaque para o sete-barbas (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri) capturado em grande quantidade nas regiُes Sudeste e Sul do Brasil. Com o objetivo de estudar a estrutura populacional de X. kroyeri de Anchieta, Estado do Espيrito Santo, durante o perيodo de janeiro a dezembro de 2008 foram realizadas coletas mensais com 1h de duraçمo. Foram registrados o nْmero de indivيduos, a biomassa, o sexo, o comprimento total e o estلdio de maturaçمo gonadal. Os exemplares amostrados apresentaram comprimento total que varia entre 2,96 a 9,96 cm sendo as fêmeas maiores que os machos. Sugere-se que a populaçمo de X. kroyeri estudada apresente reproduçمo e recrutamento semelhantes ao da regiمo Nordeste. O tamanho estimado de primeira maturaçمo gonadal foi de 4,5 cm para machos e 6,9 cm para fêmeas, sendo que a pesca atua sobre um estoque composto por machos predominantemente adultos e por fêmeas juvenis e adultas. O tamanho de malha das redes e a elevada biomassa vegetal presente nas لreas de pesca podem estar contribuindo para o aumento da captura de juvenis, comprometendo o recrutamento de X. kroyeri.(AU)

An intracellular lipase present in the whiteleg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei was detected in pleopods. The lipase from pleopods was purified and characterized by biochemical and kinetic parameters. Purified intracellular lipase has a molecular mass of 196kDa, the polypeptide is assembled by two monomers, 95.26 and 63.36kDa. The enzyme lacks glycosylation, and it has an isoelectric point of 5.0. The enzyme showed the highest activity at a temperature range of 30-40°C at pH 8.0-10.0. Activity was completely inhibited by tetrahydrolipstatin and diethyl p-nitrophenyl phosphate, suggesting that the intracellular lipase is a serine lipase. The lipase hydrolyzes short and long-chain triacylglycerides, as well as naphthol derivatives at comparable rates in contrast to other sources of lipases. Specific activity of 930U mg(-1) and 416.56U mg(-1) was measured using triolein and tristearin at pH 8.0 at 30°C as substrates, respectively. The lipase showed a K(M,app) of 41.03mM and k(cat)/K(M,app) ratio of 4.88 using MUF-butyrate as the substrate. The intracellular lipase described for shrimp has a potential role in hydrolysis of triacylglycerides stored as fat body, as has been shown in humans.

The objective of the present study was to analyze diel variation in the abundance and size of the seabob shrimp Xiphopenaeus kroyeri in the Ubatuba region, state of São Paulo, during the year 2000. In each season of the year, collections were made in the day and at night on 9 transects at depths ranging from 2 to 40 m. The estimated shrimp amount was of 28,878 individuals. Although the catch rate was higher during the day (15,853 shrimp), this did not differ significantly from the catch at night (13,025). The catch rate was higher in daytime on most transects, but was higher at night at locations where fine and very fine sand predominated. The majority of juveniles were caught during the day. The mean size (CL) was 14.43 +/- 4.02 mm for day and 14.82 +/- 4.28 mm for night samples, and the difference was significant (Student's t-test, df = 2, 429, t = 2.27, p = 0.02). The largest individuals were caught during the night. None of the three models that have been proposed in the literature to account for differences in the diurnal catch pattern of penaeid species can be applied to X. kroyeri. Our results provide evidence that sediment type not only influenced the catch rate in the analyzed periods, but also determined which models might fit the behavior of this species.

O objetivo do presente estudo foi analisar a variação diuturna na abundância e no tamanho do camarão sete-barbas Xiphopenaeus kroyeri na região de Ubatuba/São Paulo, durante o ano 2000. Em cada estação do ano, as coletas foram realizadas no período diurno e noturno, em 9 transectos localizados nas profundidades de 2 a 40 m. Um total de 28.878 camarões foi obtido e apesar da maior taxa de captura observada durante o dia (15.853 camarões), não houve diferença significativa em relação ao período noturno (13.025). Na maioria dos tran-sectos houve também uma maior taxa de captura de camarões durante o dia, no entanto, verificou-se que em locais com sedimentos com predominância de areia fina e muito fina, houve uma captura no período noturno. Já em relação aos juvenis, a maioria dos indivíduos foi amostrada durante o dia. Em consideração ao tamanho (CC) médio, obteve-se o valor de 14,43 ± 4,02 mm durante o dia e 14,82 ± 4,28 mm durante a noite, com significativa diferença (Student's t-test, df = 2.429, t = 2,27, p = 0,02). Verificou-se também que os maiores indivíduos foram capturados no período noturno. Um único modelo dos três propostos na literatura para as espécies de peneídeos quanto ao padrão de captura diuturna não pode ser aplicado ao X. kroyeri. Nossos resultados evidenciaram que tipo de sedimento não somente influenciou na taxa de captura entre os períodos analisados como determinou os modelos em que esta pode ser incluída.

Studies on the crustacean nervous system have been responsible for advances in neuroscience and continue to play an important role in comparative neurobiology. The organization of crustacean brains provides clues about their phylogeny and might also offer some hints regarding their lifestyles. In this study, we compared the organization of specific brain regions of three species of marine shrimp with two species of freshwater prawns, making possible the identification of a pathway issuing from the periphery and cluster 9, which was not previously identified in freshwater prawns and shrimp. Although the brains of the species studied show the same general organization of other crustaceans, variations in the structural organization of the olfactory lobe, evidenced by different immuno-markers, were observed between shrimp species and prawns. In contrast to shrimp, the more well-defined organization of the olfactory lobe in freshwater prawns might reflect greater integration in the processing of olfactory information. Also, in freshwater prawns we described fibers organized as a tract similar to the deutocerebral commissure.

Mating behavior has been described for very few species of penaeoid shrimps. We describe some of the environmental conditions under which mating of Litopenaeus vannamei took place in the ocean, as inferred by the presence of attached spermatophores on the thelycum of females, combined with the presence of mature males with empty ampulla terminalis, both evidence of recent copulation. Out of a total of twelve 24 hr samplings on board the research vessel B/O "EL PUMA", one was selected to examine mating. There were four periods of observation. The highest frequency of females with attached spermatophores were found during the daytime whilst the lowest was registered during the night. Females with attached spermatophore were mostly at stages IV and V of ovarian maturity and fell within the 30-50 mm of C.L. range. Copulating male size ranged between 30 and 40 mm of C.L. and there was a close relation between the percentage of mating females and males. Male to female ratio varied throughout the sampling period but it was never 1:1. The female mean size was, in all cases, bigger than the male mean size. Among the environmental factors, salinity and oxygen varied very slightly throughout the sampling period; temperature variation was more pronounced and those changes were attributed to the tidal oscillation.

We rated some reproductive characteristics of white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei (Boone, 1931) males using 46 farmed individuals (weighing 21.42 +/- 0.56 g) and 40 wild individuals (weighing 36.10 +/- 0.72 g). In farmed shrimps, spermatophore mean weight was 8.94 +/- 0.51 mg; total mean sperm count was 3.90 +/- 0.27 x 10(6) in each spermatophore; and mean percentage of normal sperm was 86.9 +/- 0.37%. In wild individuals, the respective values were 30.68 +/- 2.32 mg; 6.22 +/- 1.09 x 10(6); and 62.1 +/- 3.56%. In both groups, the differences between right and left spermatophore were not significant (p < 0.01). There were significant differences in spermatophore weight and percentage of normal sperm between farmed and wild shrimps; sperm counts differences, however, were not significant (p < 0.01). The relationship between spermatophore weight (Ws) and individual weight (Wo) was Ws (mg)=1.23 (Wo)-17.34 (r2=0.89), in farmed shrimps; and Ws (mg) = 2.57 (Wo)-60.04 (r2 = 0.64), in wild ones. In cultivated organisms, the relationship between sperm counts (Cs) and individual weight (Wo) was Cs (x 10(6)) = 1.13 * 10(-4*) (Wo) 3.361 (r2 = 0.85); and versus spermatophores weight was Cs (x 10(6)) = 0.439* (Ws) 0.984 (r2 = 0.90). In wild organisms, there was no correlation. The proportion of normal sperm ranged from 79.8 to 95.2 % (86.9 +/- 0.37%) and from 14.0 to 91.5% (62.1 +/- 2.52%), in farmed and wild shrimps, respectively. The most frequent abnormalities in both farm and wild animals were sperm without spike (49.3% and 76.6%, respectively) and irregular shape (35.8 % and 17.7 %). The less frequent occurrences were those of bent (10.2 % and 4.29%) and double spike (4.7% and 1.41%).
