The aim of this study was to determine the differences in arch length, inter-canine distance, inter-premolar distance, intermolar distance and arch shape between dental discrepancies (crowding and spacing) in a sample of dental casts from the Afro-Colombian population of San Basilio de Palenque. An analytical, cross-sectional study was conducted on a convenience sample of 63 subjects aged 11 to 57years, of Afro-Colombian origin, with full dentition from first molar to first molar, without extensive caries or restorations, and excluding casts with defects due to loss. The differences between arch (upper and lower) variables were analyzed according to dental discrepancies. Plaster models digitalized with a TR1OS3 Mono scanner with exactitude (6.9 ± 0.9 pm) and precision (4.5 ± 0.9 pm) were analyzed with Orthonalyzer software. Statistical analyses were done on SPSS software (Version 20 for Windows) and Real Statistics. Spacing discrepancy of68.25% was found for upper arch and 66.66% for lower arch; crowding discrepancy of 19.04% for upper arch and 20.63% for lower arch, and an adequate ratio of 12.69% for both arches. No statistically significant difference (p>0.05) was found between arch parameters except for inter-premolar distance on the lower arch. The most frequent arch shape in the population was oval for both upper arch, with 76.19%, and lower arch, with 71.42%. Tooth size was larger in males than females but the difference was not statistically significant.


El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar las diferencias en longitud de arco, distancia intercanina, interpremolar, intermolar y la forma de arco entre discrepancias dentales (apiñamiento y espaciamiento), en una muestra de modelos dentales de la población afrocolombiana de San Basilio de Palenque. Se realizó un estudio analítico transversal, en una muestra por conveniencia de 63 sujetos con un rango de edad entre 11 y 57 años, de origen afrocolombiano, quienes tuvieron dentición completa de primer molar a primer molar, sin caries extensas, ni restauraciones; se excluyeron los modelos con defectos por el vaciado. Se analizaron las diferencias entre las variables de los maxilares (superior e inferior) con las discrepancias dentales. Se utilizaron modelos de yeso que fueron digitalizados con el escánerTR1OS3 Mono con una exactitud de (6.9 ± 0.9 pm) y una precisión de (4.5 ± 0.9 pm)y analizados con el software Orthonalyzer. Los análisis estadísticos se llevaron a cabo utilizando el software SPSS (Versión 20 para Windows) y Real Statistics. Se encontró una discrepancia de espaciamiento de un 68,25% para el arco superior y 66,66% en el arco inferior; y una discrepancia de apiñamiento en el arco superior de 19,04% e inferior de 20,63% y una relación adecuada de 12,69% para los dos arcos. No se encontraron diferencias estadísticamente significativas (p>0.05) en los parámetros de arco a excepción de la distancia interpremolar del arco inferior. La forma de arco más frecuente en la población fue ovalada tanto en el arco superior con un 76,19% como en el arco inferior con un 71,42%. En cuanto al tamaño dental, se presentó mayor tamaño en los hombres que en las mujeres, pero este no fue estadísticamente significativo.

Introdução: O localizador apical eletrônico é uma ferramenta que facilita o tratamento endodôntico. O objetivo do presente estudo foi avaliar, in vitro, a precisão de dois localizadores apicais usados de duas maneiras distintas. Material e métodos: As medidas reais de 20 molares inferiores extraídos de humanos foram determinadas, posicionando-se os instrumentos até o forame, auxiliados por um microscópio clínico com 20x de aumento. As medidas foram realizadas com um paquímetro. Feito isso, os dentes foram montados em uma plataforma de polietileno, posicionada dentro de uma cuba plástica contendo gelatina preparada com soro fisiológico e, então, as medidas eram realizadas com os localizadores Novapex e Root ZX, posicionando os instrumentos na posição zero ou passando com o instrumento além do zero e voltando a essa posição. Para a análise dos resultados foi usada a diferença das duas medidas (real do dente e obtida pelo aparelho). Resultados: Os dados das raízes distais e mesiais foram submetidos à análise estatística. Na raiz distal o teste Anova mostrou diferença significante entre os grupos (p<0,01) e o teste de Tukey demonstrou diferença entre os valores do Novapex passando e do Root ZX na posição zero. Na raiz mesial, o teste Anova não mostrou diferença significante entre os grupos (p>0,01). Conclusão: Conclui-se que quando se usou a técnica de ir até o zero, o aparelho Novapex mostrou-se mais preciso, porém na técnica de passar e retornar ao zero, o aparelho mais preciso foi o Root ZX (AU)


Introduction: The electronic apex locator is a tool that facilitates endodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro the accuracy of two apex locators used in two different ways. Methods: Real measurements of 20 lower molars extracted from human were determined by positioning the instruments until the foramen aided by a 20x clinical microscope. The measurements were taken with a caliper. After this, the teeth were mounted on a polyethylene platform, positioned inside a plastic tub containing gelatin prepared with saline and the measures were carried out with the locators Novapex and Root ZX positioning instruments in zero or passing with the instrument beyond zero and returning to this position. The difference between the two measurements (real tooth and obtained by the device) were used for results analysis. Results: Data from the distal and mesial roots were subjected to statistical analysis. In the distal root, ANOVA showed significant difference between groups (p <0.01) and Tukey's test showed difference between the Novapex values ​when passing and Root ZX in zero. At the mesial root, ANOVA showed no significant difference between groups (p> 0.01). Conclusion: It was concluded that when using the technique positioning instruments in zero the Novapex was more accurate, however when the technique was to pass and to return to zero, the most accurate device was the Root ZX (AU)

INTRODUCTION: This in vivo study assessed accuracy and reliability of tooth length measurements obtained from conventional panoramic radiographs and CBCT panoramic reconstructions to that of a digital caliper (gold standard). METHODS: The sample consisted of subjects who had CBCT and conventional panoramic radiographic imaging and who required maxillary premolar extraction for routine orthodontic treatment. A total of 48 teeth extracted from 26 subjects were measured directly with digital calipers. Radiographic images were scanned and digitally measured in Dolphin 3D software. Accuracy of tooth length measurements made by CBCT panoramic reconstructions, conventional panoramic radiographs and digital caliper (gold standard) were compared to each other by repeated measures one-way ANOVA with Bonferroni correction and by single measures intraclass correlation coefficient. RESULTS: Repeated root length measures with digital calipers, panoramic radiographs and CBCT constructed panoramic-like images were all individually highly reliable. Compared to the caliper (gold standard), tooth measurements obtained from conventional panoramic radiographs were on average 6.3 mm (SD = 2.0 mm) longer, while tooth measurements from CBCT panoramic reconstructions were an average of 1.7 mm (SD = 1.2 mm) shorter. CONCLUSIONS: In comparison to actual tooth lengths, conventional panoramic radiographs were relatively inaccurate, overestimating the lengths by 29%, while CBCT panoramic reconstructions underestimated the lengths by 4%. .


INTRODUÇÃO: este estudo in vivo avaliou a precisão e a confiabilidade de medições do comprimento dentário realizadas em radiografias panorâmicas convencionais e em reconstruções panorâmicas de tomografias computadorizadas de feixe cônico (TCFC), comparando-as com medições feitas com um paquímetro digital, consideradas o padrão-ouro. MÉTODOS: a amostra incluiu indivíduos que já tivessem realizado tanto exames imaginológicos de TCFC quanto radiografias panorâmicas, e cujo tratamento ortodôntico exigisse a extração de pré-molar superior. No total, 48 dentes extraídos, de 26 pacientes, foram mensurados diretamente com paquímetros digitais. As radiografias foram escaneadas e digitalmente avaliadas com a ajuda do software Dolphin 3D. Por meio da análise de variância simples com correção de Bonferroni e Coeficiente de Correlação Intraclasse simples, comparou-se a precisão das medições de comprimento dentário realizadas em reconstruções panorâmicas de TCFC, em radiografias panorâmicas convencionais e com paquímetro digital. RESULTADOS: medições repetidas de comprimento dentário feitas com o paquímetro digital, radiografias panorâmicas e reconstruções panorâmicas de TCFC foram todas consideradas, individualmente, altamente confiáveis. Em comparação ao paquímetro, as medidas obtidas por meio de radiografias panorâmicas convencionais foram, em média, 6,3 ± 2,0mm mais longas, enquanto as medidas obtidas por meio das reconstruções panorâmicas de TCFC foram, em média, 1,7 ± 1,2mm mais curtas. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the reliability and reproducibility of a simplified method for analysis of dental angulation using digital photos of plaster dental casts. METHODS: Digital and standardized photographs of plaster casts were performed and posteriorly imported to an angle reading graphic program in order to have measurements obtained. Such procedures were repeated to evaluate the random error and to analyze reproducibility through intraclass correlation. The sample consisted of 12 individuals (6 male and 6 female) with full permanent dentition and not orthodontically treated. The analyses were bilaterally carried out, and generated 24 measurements. RESULTS: The random error showed variation of 0.77 to 2.55 degrees for teeth angulation. The statistical analysis revealed that the method presents excellent reproducibility (p < 0.0001) for all teeth, except for the upper premolars. In spite of that, it is still considered statistically significant (p < 0.001). CONCLUSION: The proposed method presents enough reliability that justifies its use in the development of scientific research as well as in clinical practice.

Objetivo: analisar a confiabilidade e reprodutibilidade de um método simplificado para análise da angulação dentária que faz uso de fotografias digitalizadas de modelos de gesso. Métodos: foram realizadas fotografias digitalizadas e padronizadas de modelos de gesso, posteriormente transportadas para um programa gráfico de leitura de ângulos, para a obtenção das medidas. Tais procedimentos foram repetidos para avaliação do erro do método casual e para a análise da reprodutibilidade por meio da Correlação Intraclasse. A amostra constituiu-se de 12 indivíduos com dentição permanente completa e não tratados ortodonticamente, sendo seis do sexo masculino e seis do feminino. As análises foram feitas bilateralmente, gerando 24 medidas. Resultados: o erro casual mostrou uma variação de 0,77 a 2,55º para a angulação dos dentes. A análise estatística revelou que o método apresenta uma excelente reprodutibilidade (r = 0,65 - 0,91; p < 0,0001) para todos os dentes, exceto para os pré-molares superiores, mas ainda assim estatisticamente significativa (p < 0,001). Conclusão: o método proposto apresenta confiabilidade suficiente para justificar seu uso no desenvolvimento de pesquisas científicas, bem como na prática clínica. .

INTRODUCTION: Estimating the mesiodistal widths of the mandibular permanent canines and premolars is an essential aspect of mixed dentition analysis. A method is proposed to predict the sum of the mandibular permanent canine and premolar widths based on the sum of the mandibular permanent first molars and incisors. In this study, we aimed to test the applicability and reliability of this method in a population in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, Brazil. The methods of Moyers and of Tanaka and Johnston were also tested. METHODS: The sample consisted of 200 orthodontic study models, obtained from white Brazilian patients (123 female, 77 male). The mesiodistal widths of the teeth were measured with an analog caliper. Paired Student t tests with a significance level of 5% were used to compare the actual and predicted values. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found between the predicted and actual values of the sum of the mandibular permanent canine and premolar widths when using the new method. The differences were 0.6 mm for the male sample, 0.5 mm for the female sample, and 0.6 mm for the total sample; the standard deviations were 1.9, 2.1, and 2.2 mm, respectively. However, overestimated predicted values with differences of 1.4 and 1.9 mm (male and female) in the Moyers method and 1.9 and 3.3 mm (male and female) in the Tanaka and Johnston method were found. CONCLUSIONS: The new method is consistent and applicable to the population of Belo Horizonte. The other 2 methods tended to overestimate the actual values of the permanent canines and premolars.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the presence of the golden proportion (GP) in the facial view tooth-to-tooth width proportion of the six maxillary anterior teeth and to evaluate the width/height (W/H) ratios of the incisors of patients with maxillary lateral incisor (LI) agenesis treated either with implants or orthodontically (by moving canines into the position of the laterals, recontouring them, and placing composite restorations over the repositioned teeth). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty-eight patients with LI agenesis were divided into four experimental groups: unilateral recontouring group (N = 10), bilateral recontouring group (BRG, N = 18), unilateral implant group (UIG, N = 10), bilateral implant group (N = 10), and a control group (CG, N = 25) of patients without agenesis. GP ratios were determined on patients' dental casts placed over Levin's grids, whereas W/H ratios were measured directly on the casts and a millimeter ruler to determine these distances. Statistical analysis was performed with Shapiro-Wilk, Kruskal-Wallis, Mann-Whitney, Friedman, and Wilcoxon tests (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The incidence of GP in the tooth-to-tooth width proportions was significantly different between groups and more commonly found between centrals and laterals than between laterals and canines. The GP was more likely to be observed in the BRG, UIG, and CG. The results demonstrated that the GP was not found to be present in the majority of the cases treated with maxillary agenesis, regardless of the method of treatment. The mean W/H ratios of the laterals ranged between 0.75 and 0.90. CONCLUSION: Although the GP may be a useful diagnostic guide, it was not observed in the majority of esthetic outcomes of patients treated with maxillary LI agenesis in this study. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The assessment of the golden proportion and width/height ratio of upper anterior teeth in patients with upper lateral incisor agenesis treated with either implants or tooth re-contouring may assist dentists and patients in deciding the best treatment option based on the peculiarities of each case.

The aim of this study was to assess the applicability of gray scale inversion in performing digital linear endodontic measurements. Standardized digital images were taken of 40 extracted human permanent single-rooted teeth with K-files size 15 placed at different lengths in the root canal, using the CDR Wireless(®) digital system. All images were treated with Positive, a digital tool that inverts the grayscale value. Eight radiologists measured the distance between the lower limit of the rubber stop and the tip of the file on both original and positive images. After 15 days, they repeated this procedure in 50% of the image samples. The intra- and inter-examiner agreement was analyzed by intraclass correlation test, and the comparison between the two image groups and the actual lengths by the Student's t-test (α=0.05). Intra- and inter-examiner evaluation showed high reproducibility (r>0.95) of both original and positive images. No statistically significant differences (p>0.05) were found between measurements performed on original and positive images, but both differed significantly from the actual lengths (p<0.05). Gray scale inversion has low applicability in measuring endodontic files, since it did not improve the accuracy of measurements.

O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar a aplicabilidade da inversão da escala de cinza na realização de mensurações endodônticas lineares digitais. Quarenta dentes unirradiculares humanos extraídos foram radiografados com limas K tamanho 15 posicionadas no canal radicular em diferentes comprimentos, usando o sistema digital CDR Wireless®. Todas as imagens foram tratadas com Positive, uma ferramenta digital que inverte os valores da escala de cinza. Oito radiologistas mediram a distância entre o limite inferior do stop de borracha e a ponta da lima endodôntica nas imagens originais e positivas. Após quinze dias, eles repetiram esse procedimento em 50% da amostra. A concordância intra- e interobservador foi analisada pelo teste de correlação intraclasse e a comparação entre os dois grupos de imagem e os valores reais, pelo teste t-Student (α=0,05). A análise intra- e interobservador apresentou elevada reprodutibilidade (r>0,95) das imagens original e Positive. Não foi encontrada diferença (p>0,05) entre as medidas realizadas nas imagens original e positiva, mas ambas diferiram dos valores reais (p<0,05). A inversão da escala de cinza tem baixa aplicabilidade na realização de mensuração endodôntica, considerando que as medidas não se apresentaram mais acuradas.

OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this study were to assess the accuracy of working length determination using 3 electronic apex locators and direct digital radiography and to compare the results with those obtained using the visual method (control measurement). STUDY DESIGN: Twenty extracted human maxillary premolars were selected: 17 two-rooted and 3 single-rooted (total of 37 canals). Working length was measured using electronic apex locators Elements Diagnostic, Root ZX, and Just II. Subsequently, teeth were positioned in the alveolar bone of a dry skull and submitted to direct digital radiography. A variation of ±1 mm was considered as acceptable. Results were analyzed using the Wilcoxon and the χ(2) tests. RESULTS: Results presented an accuracy of 94.6% for Elements Diagnostic, 91.9% for Root ZX, 73.0% for Just II, and 64.9% for direct digital radiography when considering the margin of ±1 mm in relation to the control measurement. Comparisons with the actual control measurements resulted in accuracy results of 13.51%, 13.51%, 10.10%, and 2.70%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Root ZX and Elements Diagnostic are more accurate in determining working length when compared with Just II and Schick direct digital radiography.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to compare skeletal, dentoalveolar and soft tissue characteristics in white and black Brazilian subjects presenting normal occlusions. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The sample comprised the lateral cephalograms of 106 untreated Brazilian subjects with normal occlusion, divided into two groups: Group 1- 50 white subjects (25 of each gender), at a mean age of 13.17 years (standard deviation 1.07); and Group 2- 56 black subjects (28 of each gender), at a mean age of 13.24 years (standard deviation 0.56). Variables studied were obtained from several cephalometric analyses. Independent t tests were used for intergroup comparison and to determine sexual dimorphism. RESULTS: black subjects presented a more protruded maxilla and mandible, a smaller chin prominence and a greater maxillomandibular discrepancy than white subjects. Blacks presented a more horizontal craniofacial growth pattern than whites. Maxillary and mandibular incisors presented more protruded and proclined in black subjects. The nasolabial angle was larger in whites. Upper and lower lips were more protruded in blacks than in whites. CONCLUSIONS: The present study found a bimaxillary skeletal, dentoalveolar and soft tissue protrusion in black Brazilian subjects compared to white Brazilian subjects, both groups with normal occlusion. Upper and lower lips showed to be more protruded in blacks, but lip thickness was similar in both groups.

AIM: To determine whether there is sexual dimorphism regarding Bolton ratios within four ethnic groups and to compare them against Bolton standards. METHODS: The sample consisted of 140 dental study casts of untreated normal occlusion subjects, derived from four racial groups: black, white, Afro-Mediterranean, and Japanese. Anterior and overall Bolton ratios were calculated for each cast. The Kolmogorov-Smirnov test, t test, and one-way ANOVA were used. RESULTS: No statistically significant sexual dimorphism in anterior or total tooth-size ratios were found within any group. Only the Japanese anterior ratio (75.09) was statistically less than the Bolton standard (77.2; P<.001). CONCLUSION: The Bolton ratio can be applied to the investigated ethnic groups except for the anterior ratio in Japanese patients.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate ex vivo the accuracy an electronic apex locator during root canal length determination in primary molars. METHODS: One calibrated examiner determined the root canal length in 15 primary molars (total=34 root canals) with different stages of root resorption. Root canal length was measured both visually with the placement of a K-file 1 mm short of the apical foramen or the apical resorption bevel, and electronically using an electronic apex locator (Digital Signal Processing). Data were analyzed statistically using the intraclass correlation (ICC) test. RESULTS: Comparing the actual and electronic root canal length measurements in the primary teeth showed a high correlation (ICC=0.95). CONCLUSIONS: The Digital Signal Processing apex locator is useful and accurate for apex foramen location during root canal length measurement in primary molars.

PURPOSE: There is a consensus in the community of dental research that the selection of undersized artificial maxillary anterior teeth offers an unnatural appearance to the denture. Several methods to select the adequate width of these teeth are of questionable validity, and many dentures have an obviously artificial appearance. This article assessed the relationship between the individual and the combined width of maxillary anterior teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Impressions were made of the anterior dentition of 69 dentate undergraduate students with rubber impression silicon, and casts were formed. The individual widths of the maxillary anterior teeth were measured by using a digital caliper (SC-6 digital caliper, Mitutoyo Corporation, Tokyo, Japan), and the combined width was registered by both adding the individual width and using a flexible millimeter ruler. RESULTS: Student's t-test showed significant differences between the analogous teeth and different sides of the maxillary dental arch (p = 0.001), with the exception of the central incisor (p = 0.984). Pearson's product moment correlation coefficient showed significant positive correlation between all the measurements compared (p = 0.000). Linear regression analysis concluded three mathematical equations to obtain the individual tooth width after measuring the combined width of the six maxillary anterior teeth by using a flexible millimeter ruler. CONCLUSIONS: The individual tooth width can be determined if the combined width of the maxillary anterior teeth is obtained by using a flexible millimeter ruler.

The purpose of this study was to compare the accuracy of Root ZX II to locate the apical constriction with the display meter set at "0.5" and "1'"reading. Seventy single-rooted teeth were soaked in an alginate model and randomly distributed in 2 groups (n = 35). Measurements were taken following canal irrigation with 1% NaOCl. The length was established using a #20 K-file attached to the holder when the display indicator reached the marks "0.5" (group I) or "1" (group II), after the meter read "Apex." Then, the file was fixed in position and the teeth removed from the alginate. The apical portion of the root was shaved until the tip of the file could be seen, the distance to the apical constriction verified by means of a stereomicroscope and the measurements compared. Statistical analysis was performed by using Student t test with the null hypothesis set as 5%. The mean positions of the file tip relative to the apical constriction were -0.23 +/- 0.39 mm and -0.42 +/- 0.45 for groups I and II, respectively, with no statistical difference (P > .05). The accuracy was 90.5% and 83.78% for the Root ZX II "0.5" and "1" readings, respectively. It was concluded that the meter reading "1" of Root ZX II reduced the risk of working length overestimation.

The accuracy of four electronic apex locators (EALs) to locate the apical limit in teeth with simulated horizontal oblique root fractures was investigated. A horizontal oblique incomplete root fracture was simulated on 20 freshly extracted maxillary anterior teeth by means of a notch made on the vestibular root plane 8 mm from the anatomic apex. The EALs investigated were the ProPex (Dentsply Maillefer, Ballaigues, Switzerland), the NovApex (Forum Technologies, Rishon Le-Zion, Israel), the Root ZX (J. Morita Corp, Kyoto, Japan), and the Elements Apex Locator (SybronEndo, Orange CA). The electronic measurements were compared with the real "working length." The accuracy obtained was of 80% (n = 16) and 95% (n = 19) with the ProPex, 70% (n = 14) and 95% (n = 19) with the NovApex, 60% (n = 12) and 90% (n = 18) with the Root ZX, and 60% (n = 12) and 85% (n = 17) with the Elements Apex Locator when tolerances of 0.5-mm and 1.0-mm tolerance were, respectively, allowed. The analysis of variance (p > 0.05) and chi-square test (0.5 mm/p = 0.47 and 1.0 mm/p = 0.63 tolerances) showed no statistical significant differences between the EALs at either tolerance level.

The treatment of skeletal disharmonies presents better results when performed during the growth period. The physical changes that occur in every individual express growth, which is ruled by genetic, general and environmental factors. In order to identify such disharmonies and hence concentrate the clinical actions during treatment and influence facial growth, cephalometrics appears as a useful a diagnostic tool for identifying facial growth patterns or growth direction. Jarabak's cephalometric analysis is used to assess facial growth pattern of subjects with normal occlusion or malocclusions. The purpose of this study was to obtain mean values for cephalometric measurements from Jarabak's cephalometric analyses of black Brazilian subjects resident in the city of Piracicaba, São Paulo state, Brazil and vicinities, who presented Class I molar relationship with normal overjet and overbite, mild or no tooth crowding or spacing, and no history of orthodontic treatment. A sample of 37 stone plaster casts and 37 lateral teleradiographs from both male and female individuals aged 10 to 14 years was evaluated. Data were analyzed statistically by Student's t-test at 5% significance level. There was no significant differences between genders. The cephalometric measurements obtained in this study were similar to the Jarabak's standards, except for S-N mean value in females (66.50 mm +/- 3.16), which was significantly lower than the standard.
