RESUMO

Background: Diminished ovarian reserve (DOR) refers to a decrease in the number or quality of oocytes in the ovarian cortex, which is a degenerative disease of the reproductive system, and can further develop into premature ovarian failure. There are few studies on acupuncture and moxibustion for DOR, which are still in the exploratory stage. Methods/design: This study was a real-world case registry study. According to whether the subjects received conception vessel acupuncture or not, they were divided into the basic treatment combined with conception vessel acupuncture group and the basic treatment group. A total of 1221 patients with DOR were enrolled and treated for 12 weeks. The percentage of patients with ≥30% improvement in anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH) was evaluated at the end of week 12. Secondary outcomes included Antral follicle count (AFC), modified Kupperman scale, basal FSH level, LH level, FSH/LH ratio, positive pregnancy, clinical pregnancy, early spontaneous abortion, ongoing pregnancy, and ectopic pregnancy. Discussion: This study provides clinical evidence and theoretical support for the treatment of DOR with conception vessel acupuncture and moxibustion, so as to guide and improve the efficacy of acupuncture and moxibustion. Trial registration: Acupuncture-Moxibustion Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2400080471. Registered on 30 January 2024.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Urinary incontinence is a common complication following a stroke. No specific drugs are available in Western medicine, and surgical treatment is highly traumatic, limiting its clinical application. This study aimed to observe the clinical efficacy of electroacupuncture at the "Sacral Four Points" combined with moxibustion at the "Abdominal Three Points" on post-stroke urinary incontinence, exploring its impact on urodynamics and quality of life. METHODS: Patients with post-stroke urinary incontinence treated at our Hospital from January 2021 to December 2023 were recruited. The study included 117 patients: 57 in the electroacupuncture group and 60 in the combined group. Urodynamic parameters were measured, and scores from the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Urinary Incontinence Short Form (ICIQ-UI SF) and the Incontinence Quality of Life Questionnaire (I-QOL) were recorded before, and after the first and third courses of treatment. Clinical efficacy and adverse reactions were evaluated post-treatment. RESULTS: The study found no significant differences in clinical characteristics between the groups (p > 0.05), providing a baseline for comparison. Both groups showed substantial decreases in leakage volume after one course of treatment (p < 0.05), with a reduction in the ICIQ-UI SF score (p < 0.05) and an increase in the I-QOL score (p < 0.05). After three courses of treatment, the leakage volume of patients in both groups significantly decreased (p < 0.05), the ICIQ-UI SF score decreased (p < 0.05), and the I-QOL score increased (p < 0.05). The combined group showed a lower leakage volume compared to the electroacupuncture group (p < 0.05), with lower ICIQ-UI SF scores (p = 0.027) and higher I-QOL scores (p = 0.048). Importantly, the total effective rate was significantly higher in the combined group (88.33% vs 64.91%, p = 0.037), demonstrating the safety and efficacy of the treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Electroacupuncture at the "Sacral Four Points" combined with moxibustion at the "Abdominal Three Points" improves the clinical symptoms and enhances the quality of life for patients with post-stroke urinary incontinence, showing superior results compared to electroacupuncture alone.

RESUMO

The paper summarizes Professor JI Laixi's academic thought on acupuncture and moxibustion. Professor JI Laixi inherits and carries forward the theory and technical system of Shanxi "new nine needles", deepens its academic connotation, and promotes clinical practice. He advocates the integration of Chinese and western medicine, and the inclusion of multiple disciplines, e.g. acupuncture and moxibustion of Chinese medicine and modern anatomy. He takes the lead in proposing a new approach to the treatment of meridian diseases of limbs, "treating the neck region for the diseases of head, treating the abdominal region for the diseases of the lumbar region, and treating the lumbar region for the disease of knees". He proposes the acupoint prescription being standardized and simplified, explores the system of acupoint prescription and establishes the prescriptions for gastric diseases, intestinal diseases and antihypertension.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Managing infertility patients with poor ovarian response (POR) to ovarian stimulation remains unmet clinically. Besides economic burdens, patients with POR have a poor prognosis during in vitro fertilization and embryo transfer (IVF-ET). In this study, we assessed the efficacy and safety of Shen Que (RN8) moxibustion on reproductive outcomes in POSEIDON patients (Group 2a). METHODS: Women eligible for IVF were invited to participate in this randomized, open-label, superiority trial at an academic fertility center from January 2022 to December 2023. One hundred patients ≤ 44 years old equally divided between Shen Que moxibustion (SQM) and control groups were randomized. These patients must meet the POSEIDON criteria, Group 2a, which requires antral follicle count (AFC) ≥ 5 or anti-müllerian hormone (AMH) ≥ 1.2ng/ml, and a previous unexpected POR (< 4 oocytes). Twelve moxibustion sessions were conducted in the SQM group prior to oocyte retrieval, while only IVF treatment was performed in the control group. The primary outcome was the number of oocytes retrieved. RESULTS: As compared with the IVF treatment alone, the SQM + IVF treatment significantly increased the number of retrieved oocytes (4.7 vs. 5.8, p = 0.012), mature oocytes (3.0 vs. 5.0, p = 0.008), and available embryos (2.0 vs. 4.0, p = 0.014) in unexpected poor ovarian responders aged more than 35 years. In the SQM group, the cumulative live birth rate was 27.3% (9/33) in comparison to 13.3% (4/30) in the control group, whereas no statistical significance was detected (p = 0.172). During the study, no significant adverse effects were observed. CONCLUSIONS: Women with unexpected POR who meet POSEIDON Group 2a can benefit from Shen Que (RN8) moxibustion treatment. RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of Fu's subcutaneous needling combined with monkshood cake-separated moxibustion for primary dysmenorrhea with cold congealing and blood stasis. METHODS: Sixty patients with primary dysmenorrhea of cold congealing and blood stasis were randomly divided into an observation group (30 cases, 1 case dropped out) and a control group (30 cases, 2 cases dropped out). The control group received monkshood cake-separated moxibustion at Shenque (CV 8) and bilateral Zigong (EX-CA 1), while the observation group received Fu's subcutaneous needling based on the control group. The muscles were palpated and the affected muscles were determined. Needles were inserted 5-10 cm away from the affected muscles and reperfusion activity was performed simultaneously. All the treatment started on the first day of menstrual cycle pain, once a day, for 3 days, totaling for 3 menstrual cycles. The visual analogue scale (VAS) score, Cox menstrual symptom scale (CMSS) score, and traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome score in the two groups were observed before treatment, after 2 treatment courses and after 3 treatment courses. The serum prostaglandin F2α(PGF2α) levels before and after 3 treatment courses were measured, and the clinical efficacy of the two groups was evaluated. RESULTS: After 2 and 3 treatment courses, the VAS scores, CMSS scores, and TCM syndrome scores in the two groups were lower than those before treatment (P<0.05), and the scores in the observation group were lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). After 3 treatment courses, the PGF2α level in the observation group was decreased (P<0.05), and were lower than that in the control group (P<0.05). The total effective rate was 96.6% (28/29) in the observation group, which was higher than 64.3% (18/28) in the control group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Fu's subcutaneous needling combined with monkshood cake-separated moxibustion could effectively reduce the pain intensity, improve clinical symptoms of dysmenorrhea, and lower PGF2α level in patients with primary dysmenorrhea of cold congealing and blood stasis.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Moxibustion, a traditional Chinese medicine practice, employs Moxa Wool, derived from Artemisia argyi. Flavonoids, the key pharmacological constituents in Moxa Wool, are known for their anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties. The purity of Moxa Wool, particularly its flavonoid content, directly influences the efficacy of moxibustion treatments. However, quantifying these bioactive flavonoids accurately and non-destructively has been a challenge. PURPOSE: This study introduces terahertz spectroscopy as a non-destructive optical detection method for qualitative detection and quantitative analysis of flavonoids in Moxa Wool. By establishing a mathematical model between spectral signals and clinical efficacy, a reliable correlation between flavonoid concentration and the therapeutic effect of moxibustion can be established, providing a potential predictive model for the treatment outcomes of rheumatoid arthritis. STUDY DESIGN: We adopted terahertz spectroscopy technology and combined it with terahertz metamaterial biosensors to achieve rapid, efficient, and non-destructive testing of the quality of Moxa Wool. This method reduces the detection time from hours to minutes while lowering the sample detection limit, overcoming the limitations of traditional detection methods in pharmacological research. METHODS: Through terahertz metamaterial biosensors, rapid detection of the purity of Moxa Wool has been achieved. A combination of molecular simulation and terahertz spectroscopy was used to quantitatively analyze the flavonoid content in different purities of Moxa Wool. To ensure accuracy, the quantitative results of flavonoids obtained by terahertz spectroscopy were validated using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In addition, moxibustion treatment was performed on rats with rheumatoid arthritis using Moxa Wool, and medical indicator information was recorded. A mathematical analysis model was established to evaluate the correlation between flavonoid content and analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects. RESULTS: Terahertz spectroscopy analysis shows that there is a direct correlation between the flavonoid content in moxibustion and the absorption peak intensity. The maximum R2 in the model analysis is 0.98, indicating a high accuracy in predicting the purity of Moxa Wool. These results were also validated by HPLC. In a rat model, the purity of 30:1 Moxa Wool samples showed a 50 % decrease in TNF-α, IL-1ß, and IL-6 levels during treatment compared to low-purity samples, significantly reducing inflammation markers and pain symptoms. Meanwhile, The PLS prediction model established a correlation between terahertz-detected flavonoid levels and treatment outcomes (PWL and IL-1ß). The maximum R2 in the model is 0.91, indicating a high correlation between flavonoid levels and the anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects of moxibustion treatment. CONCLUSION: This study not only demonstrates the effectiveness of terahertz spectroscopy in the pharmacological quantification of bioactive compounds but also establishes a novel predictive model for the efficacy of moxibustion in rheumatoid arthritis treatment. It underscores the potential of integrating traditional medicine insights with advanced technology to enhance therapeutic strategies in pharmacology.

RESUMO

The Dragon Gate Stone Inscription prescriptions are the earliest surviving stone inscriptions of medical formulas in China, covering various departments such as internal medicine, surgery, gynecology, pediatrics and ophthalmology. By reviewing 28 moxibustion prescriptions recorded in the Dragon Gate Stone Inscriptions, the following application characteristics are summarized: moxibustion mainly treats acute diseases such as mania, deficiency-cold syndrome, and jaundice; in terms of point selection, specific points such as the thirteen ghost points, eight influential points, and front-mu points are used, emphasizing the extraordinary meridians such as governor vessel and conception vessel, as well as specific single acupoints with unique therapeutic effects; in clinical application, it follows the principle of treating according to syndrome differentiation, uses multiple acupoints simultaneously, employs food-medicine homology, and adjusts the moxibustion dosage according to individual conditions. The Dragon Gate Stone Inscription prescriptions reflect that the application of moxibustion therapy during the Northern Wei to Tang Dynasty period had already reached a relatively mature level, indicating a high level of proficiency in moxibustion techniques during that time.

RESUMO

The effect of reinforcing and reducing techniques of moxibustion depends on types of moxibustion, operation methods and characteristics of acupoints. According to the ups and downs of pathogenic factors and healthy qi during the occurrence and development of prostate cancer, three stages are divided, namely, the stage of initial accumulation of cancer toxicity, the stage of the deficiency of healthy qi and toxin retention, and the stage of yang deficiency and cold stagnation. In the stage of initial accumulation of cancer toxicity, zangfu function is impaired and the dampness, heat and stasis toxin are accumulated in the body; due to which, the reducing technique of moxibustion should be dominant and the healthy qi be supported in combination. In treatment, the wheat-grain sized cone moxibustion, suppurative moxibustion and garlic-isolated moxibustion are applicable. The reducing purpose of moxibustion is obtained by delivering an appropriate increased number of moxa cones, large dosage and strong stimulation at acupoints. In the stage of the deficiency of healthy qi and toxin retention, qi movement is weakened and cancer toxin consumes yin; the reinforcing healthy qi and removing pathogenic factors should be operated simultaneously. In treatment, mild moxibustion and suppurative moxibustion can be used. The reduced number of moxa cones, moderate dosage of moxibustion and mild stimulation at acupoints should be considered to gently adjust the conditions of deficiency and excess. In the stage of yang deficiency and cold stagnation, spleen and kidney yang is deficient, and the meridians are blocked by cold and damp pathogens. In treatment, the reinforcing technique of moxibustion should be used specially and eliminating pathogenic factors be combined. Monkshood cake-insulated moxibustion, salt-insulated moxibustion and wheat-grain sized cone moxibustion can be adopted. The less number of moxa cones, small dosage and appropriately increased frequency of treatment should be considered to produce the gentle and sustained stimulation at acupoints so as to excite the healthy qi and promote the transformation of qi and blood.

RESUMO

To explore the research hotspot, development trend and existing problem of artificial intelligence (AI) application in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion by using bibliometric method. Relevant articles of AI application in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion published in CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed and Web of Science from the database establishment to September 17, 2023 were searched. Excel 2019, CiteSpace 6.2.R4 and VOSviewer 1.6.19 were used to draw visual map of the number of publication, authors, research institutions and keywords, and further analyzed the research hotspot and trend. A total of 443 Chinese articles and 68 English articles were included. The number of annual publication of Chinese articles showed an overall increasing trend, while the number of publication of English articles was less, with a growing trend from 2020. Keywords analysis showed that "Machine learning", "neural network", "deep learning", "data mining", "robot" and other AI technologies were developing around acupuncture and moxibustion diagnosis and treatment of disease, efficacy prediction, teaching and intelligent equipment development. However, the research on the application of AI in the field of acupuncture and moxibustion is in the preliminary stage of development, and in the future, it is necessary to strengthen the communication and cooperation among the teams, to further explore the AI system in line with the characteristics of acupuncture and moxibustion diagnosis and treatment, and to promote the development of the digitalisation, intellectualisation and industrialisation of acupuncture and moxibustion.

RESUMO

Importance: We compile and analyze ancient literature related to Baihui (GV20) moxibustion and summarize the development of its ancient clinical application. Observations: The Chinese Medical Classic (5th edition) was used as the search source to screen and organize articles related to Baihui moxibustion to establish a database. We created indexing norms according to study characteristics and indexed books, dynasties, literary styles, disease key words, matching acupoints, combinations, moxibustion amounts, and moxa cone sizes. SPSS version 24.0 software was used to calculate the index results. A total of 320 articles that met the requirements were finally included and were attributed to 99 ancient books, spanning from the Western Han Dynasty to the Qing Dynasty. A total of 45 keywords were used for disease evidence: the most frequent occurrences were internal medicine (primary category), limb meridians (secondary category), and head diseases (specific patterns). Conclusions and Relevance: Baihui moxibustion has been updated and developed in the literature over the ages, and the method of Baihui moxibustion is diverse. The main treatment rule of Baihui moxibustion considers the whole body and close treatment of partial diseases. Baihui moxibustion also has the rule of following meridian indications, with treatment based on syndrome differentiation and compatible application. Baihui moxibustion alone has a relatively strong effect of raising yang and lifting the sunken, which can treat the sinking of qi and deficiency.

RESUMO

Objective: An investigation into whether Thunder-Fire Moxibustion improves Meibomian Gland Dysfunction by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ)-related signaling pathway. Methods: C57BL/6 mice were randomly divided into a Control Group (CG), model group (MG), Experimental Group (EG), Treatment Group (TG), and GW9662 (GW), with 10 mice in each group. The obstruction of the meibomian gland opening, tear film rupture time, and corneal fluorescein sodium staining were observed. The morphology of the meibomian gland was observed by HE staining. Observations of oil red staining were made on the meibomian gland to determine its oil content. The expression levels of PPARγ, NF-κB p65, Phospho-NF-κB p65 (p-NF-κB), and IL-6 in the meibomian gland were detected by Western blot. The expression of PPARγ, NF-κB p65, p-NF-κB p65, and IL-6 in the meibomian gland was examined by immunofluorescence staining. Results: The results showed that compared to the Control Group, the Model Group mice exhibited an increased Meibomian Gland Orifices Score (MGOS) (P < .01), an increased MG corneal staining (P < .01), a shorter tear film break-up time (P < .01), eyelid atrophy, disordered arrangement of meibomian gland cells, the presence of a large number of immature adipocytes, varying degrees of cellular inflammation and infiltration, a significant reduction in meibomian gland tissue lipids, decreased expressions of MGPPARγ and NF-κB (P < .01), and elevated expressions of phosphorylated NF-κB and IL-6 (P < .01). However, Western medicine, antagonists, and thunder-fire moxibustion were all able to reverse these phenomena observed in the Model Group mice (P < .01), with thunder-fire moxibustion exhibiting the most significant effect (P < .01). Conclusion: The thunder-fire moxibustion can induce the differentiation of meibomian gland cells, thereby improving the inflammation response.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinical effect of magnetic stimulation combined with moxibustion on mild to moderate overactive bladder (OAB) and sexual function in women. METHODS: We enrolled 80 female patients with mild to moderate OAB in this study and equally randomized them into a control and an experimental group, the former treated by magnetic stimulation and the latter by magnetic stimulation combined with moxibustion, both for 8 weeks. We obtained from the patients their OAB syndrome scores (OABSS), 72-hour urination diary (72-h UD) scores, International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire - Overactive Bladder (ICIQ-OAB) scores and female sexual function indexes (FSFI), and compared them between the two groups before and after intervention. RESULTS: A total of 77 patients completed the study, 37 in the control and 40 in the experimental group. There were no statistically significant differences in the baseline data between the two groups (P > 0.05). Compared with the baseline, the experimental group showed significant improvement after treatment in the OABSS (7.54±1.12 vs 4.46±0.96), 72-h urine volume (ï¼»126.40±46.04ï¼½ vs ï¼»216.63±38.26ï¼½ ml), urination frequency (15.55±3.21 vs 8.03±1.40), ICIQ-OAB score (10.25±1.15 vs 6.32±1.07) and FSFI (20.00±12.40 vs 33.30±21.00) (all P < 0.05), even more significantly than in the control group (OABSS: 4.46±0.96 vs 5.59±0.90; 72-h urine volume: ï¼»216.63±38.26ï¼½ vs ï¼»173.41±15.55ï¼½ ml; urination frequency: 8.03±1.40 vs 9.90±1.49; ICIQ-OAB score: 6.32±1.07 vs 7.89±0.77; FSFI: 33.30±21.00 vs 30.40±10.40) (all P < 0.01). CONCLUSION: Magnetic stimulation combined with moxibustion can improve the symptoms of mild to moderate overactive bladder and improve sexual function in females.

RESUMO

To explore the effects of Du Meridian moxibustion combined with ear acupuncture on clinical symptoms and serum neurotransmitters in patients with coronary heart disease and insomnia. This study is a retrospective study. From June 2021 to May 2023, 116 patients with coronary heart disease and insomnia treated at our hospital were selected as subjects. They were divided into 2 groups according to the treatment. The control group received treatment with alprazolam, while the experimental group received Du Meridian moxibustion combined with ear acupuncture in addition to alprazolam treatment. The efficacy of the 2 groups was compared, and the levels of cardiac function indicators, serum melatonin, leptin, and neurotransmitters were measured. The total effectiveness rate in the experimental group was 93.10% (with a cure rate of 36.21%, a significant improvement rate of 41.38%, and an effective rate of 15.52%), which was significantly higher than the 79.31% in the control group (with a cure rate of 24.14%, a significant improvement rate of 32.76%, and an effective rate of 22.41%) (P < .05). Both groups exhibited an increase in left ventricular ejection fraction, stroke volume, and cardiac output after treatment compared to before treatment. Additionally, left ventricular end-systolic diameter decreased after treatment compared to before treatment, but the cardiac function was compared between the 2 groups after treatment (P > .05). In both groups, serum melatonin and serotonin (5-HT) levels increased after treatment compared to before treatment, while serum leptin, dopamine, and glutamate levels decreased after treatment compared to before treatment. Furthermore, the experimental group had higher serum melatonin, 5-HT, and gamma-aminobutyric acid levels compared to the control group, and lower serum leptin, dopamine, and glutamate levels compared to the control group (P < .05). The serum traditional Chinese medicine syndrome score and Pittsburgh sleep quality index score of the 2 groups decreased after treatment, and the experimental group was lower than the conventional group (P < .05). The combination of Du Meridian acupuncture with ear acupuncture in the treatment of insomnia in coronary heart disease can regulate the expression of serum melatonin, leptin, and neurotransmitters, alleviate symptoms, and improve therapeutic efficacy.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To observe the clinical efficacy of acupoint massage, acupoint sticking combined with moxibustion at Shuidao (ST 28) for postpartum urinary retention. METHODS: A total of 120 patients with postpartum urinary retention were randomly divided a triple-combination group, a double-combination group, and a massage group, with 40 patients in each group. All groups received standard postpartum care to stimulate urination. The patients in the massage group received rapid acupoint massage at the bilateral Shuidao (ST 28); the patients in the double-combination group additionally received acupoint sticking of self-made Tongquan powder at bilateral Shuidao (ST 28); the patients in the triple-combination group further received moxibustion at bilateral Shuidao (ST 28). The treatment was given once in all three groups. After 5 hours of treatment completion, bladder residual volume was measured; the time and volume of first urination as well as total urination volume after 5 hours of treatment completion were recorded; the patients' sensation of urination smoothness, satisfaction rate, length of hospital stay, and hospital costs were evaluated. RESULTS: The triple-combination group showed significantly lower residual urine volumes (P<0.05), earlier first urination time (P<0.05, P<0.001), and higher first urination volumes and total urination volumes after 5 hours of treatment completion compared to the other two groups (P<0.05, P<0.001). The sensation of urination smoothness and patient satisfaction were also significantly better in the triple-combination group (P<0.001, P<0.05). The double-combination group had higher volume of first urination and total urination volume after 5 hours of treatment completion than the massage group (P<0.05), and better sensation of urination smoothness and patient satisfaction (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the length of hospital stay and costs among the three groups (P>0.05). The total effective rates were 100.0% (40/40) for the triple-combination group, 90.0% (36/40) for the double-combination group, and 70.0% (28/40) for the massage group, with the triple-combination group significantly outperforming the other two groups (P<0.05, P<0.001), and double-combination group outperforming the massage group (P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Acupoint massage, acupoint sticking combined with moxibustion at Shuidao (ST 28) could effectively improve urination in patients with postpartum urinary retention, and enhance patient satisfaction.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: The impact of acupuncture and moxibustion on postoperative complications and adverse events (AEs) of chemotherapy in patients with gastric cancer (GC) has been investigated. Through a meta-analysis of existing randomized controlled trials (RCTs), this study sought to strengthen the evidentiary basis to help investigators further understand the effects of moxibustion and acupuncture on postoperative complications and AEs of chemotherapy among GC patients. METHODS: Embase, Web of Science, PubMed, The Cochrane Library, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Database, and VIP Database for Chinese Technical Periodicals were searched to collect RCTs on effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on gastrointestinal function and AEs among GC patients undergoing surgery and chemotherapy. Outcome measures included postoperative gastrointestinal recovery (bowel sound recovery time, time to first flatus/defecation/feeding), the incidence of AEs (nausea and vomiting, abdominal distension, and diarrhea), myelosuppression (white blood cells, hemoglobin, and platelet), and immune function indicators (CD3+ and CD4+). To assess quality, the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool was utilized. Review Manager 5.4 was implemented to do the meta-analysis. RESULTS: Fifteen eligible RCTs involved 1259 patients. Meta-analysis results showed that the experimental group had a significantly shorter bowel sound recovery time (MD = - 14.57, 95% CI = [- 18.97, - 10.18], P < 0.00001), time to first flatus (MD = - 17.56, 95% CI = [- 22.23, - 12.88], P < 0.00001), time to first defecation (MD = - 17.05, 95% CI = [- 21.02, - 13.09], P < 0.00001), and time to first feeding (MD = - 23.49, 95% CI = [- 28.81, - 18.17], P < 0.00001) than the control group. There were significant decreases in the incidence of nausea and vomiting (RR = 0.46, 95% CI = [0.21, 1.02], P = 0.05) and abdominal distension (RR = 0.45, 95% CI = [0.27, 0.75], P = 0.002) observed in the experimental group in comparison with the control group. The experimental group demonstrated a significant increase in white blood cell counts in comparison with to the control group (MD = 0.89, 95% CI = [0.23, 1.55], P = 0.008). The experimental group showed significantly higher levels of CD3+ (MD = 7.30, 95% CI = [1.86, 12.74], P = 0.009) and CD4+ (MD = 2.75, 95% CI = [1.61, 3.90], P < 0.00001) than the control group. CONCLUSION: Among GC patients, acupuncture and moxibustion can aid in gastrointestinal function recovery, reduce the incidence of AEs of surgery and chemotherapy, and improve immune function.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This systematic review of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of moxibustion as a complementary or alternative treatment for asthma. METHODS: Seven databases were searched up to June 23, 2024, to identify RCTs assessing moxibustion for bronchial asthma. The outcomes of interest included response to treatment, asthma control, quality of life, lung function, immunological indicators, and incidence of adverse events (AEs). The treatment effects were measured by proportional odds ratios or mean differences with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: Thirty-seven RCTs (n = 2,879) were included. Moderate- to very low-quality evidence showed that compared with anti-asthmatic drugs alone, moxibustion plus anti-asthmatic drugs led to a significantly better response and greater increases in lung function, asthma control, and IgE levels. However, the combination therapy had no effect on children's quality of life. In the active comparisons, moxibustion resulted in a superior response to treatment and a greater improvement in asthma control and had comparable effects on lung function, quality of life, and IgE levels compared with anti-asthmatic drugs. The effects of moxibustion on the proportions of CD4 + and CD8 + T cells and the eosinophil count were inconsistent between the add-on and active comparisons. All reported AEs related to moxibustion were mild. CONCLUSIONS: Moxibustion, as an adjunctive treatment or used alone, may improve the response to treatment, lung function, asthma control, and IgE levels in patients with asthma with good safety. Its effects on children's quality of life and immune cell levels remain uncertain.

RESUMO

In recent years, osteoarthritis of the knee, a common degenerative joint disease, often occurs in the elderly population. This disease has a significant impact on the quality of life of patients. For treating knee osteoarthritis, physical therapy is highly regarded as a very effective treatment method. This article delves deeply into commonly used physical therapy methods and analyzes their therapeutic effects, cost-effectiveness, and applicability, aiming to find treatments with broader applicability and better cost-effectiveness. The goal is to help a large number of patients effectively alleviate the discomfort caused by knee osteoarthritis, enhance the clinical therapeutic effects, and introduce home treatment methods to reduce financial burdens. The article also compares various physical therapy methods and finds that moxibustion and electrotherapy are more suitable for home use. Other treatment methods provide a reliable scientific basis for patient treatment.

RESUMO

Neutropenia, a common side effect of chemotherapy for ovarian cancer, was observed in a 47-year-old female patient undergoing a six-cycle chemotherapy regimen. She experienced recurrent neutropenia and leukopenia but refused granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (G-CSF) due to severe bone pain and high costs. Moxibustion combined with guasha therapy (MGT) was administered each time neutropenia occurred. The treatment involved guasha therapy on the bladder meridian (BL) and the governor vessel (GV), followed by moxibustion at Zhongwan (CV 12), Guanyuan (CV 4), and Shenzhu (GV 12) points over 2-3 days. This approach led to the recovery of neutrophil and leukocyte counts, enabling the patient to complete six chemotherapy cycles without G-CSF. These findings suggest that MGT may enhance neutrophil and leukocyte counts in patients with chemotherapy-induced myelosuppression, presenting a potential alternative for those intolerant to G-CSF. However, further high-quality research is needed to confirm its efficacy.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Our previous studies showed that laser moxibustion may be effective in alleviating the symptoms of knee osteoarthritis. However, the therapeutic effect in patients with different Kellgren-Lawrence (KL) grades is still unclear. We aimed to compare the efficacy of laser moxibustion in the treatment of knee osteoarthritis with different KL grades. METHODS: A total of 392 symptomatic KOA patients with different KL grades were randomly assigned to the laser treatment or sham laser control group (1:1). The patients received laser moxibustion treatment or sham treatment 3 times a week for 4 weeks. Outcomes were measured using the Western Ontario and McMaster Universities Arthritis Index (WOMAC) scores and Visual Analog Scale (VAS) scores, and the primary outcome measurement was the change in WOMAC pain scores from baseline to week 4. RESULTS: Among 392 randomized participants, 364 (92.86%) completed the trial. Participants with KL grades 2, 3, and 4 had significantly higher pain, functional, and total WOMAC scores than those with KL grade 1. Spearman correlation test results showed a positive correlation between KL grade and WOMAC pain, function, stiffness scores, and WOMAC total scores. That is, the higher the KL grade, the higher the WOMAC pain, function, stiffness, and WOMAC total scores. After 4 weeks of treatment, patients with KL grades 2 and 3 had significantly higher improvement scores in pain, function, and total scores than those with KL grade 1, whereas those with KL grade 2 had significantly higher improvement scores in stiffness than those with KL grade 1. Patients with KL grade 4 showed no significant effects after laser moxibustion treatment. CONCLUSION: Laser moxibustion is effective for pain reduction and functional improvement in the treatment of KOA with KL grades 2 and 3.
