ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to verify the effect of massage or pseudo massage on vertical jump performance. Fifteen participants were randomly subjected to three experimental conditions: massage, pseudo massage and rest. The massage condition required three unipodal vertical jumps followed by two minutes of manual massage on plantar flexor muscles and, before performing another three jumps, the Total Quality Recover Scale (TQR) was applied. The two following conditions were structured with the same procedures, although participants were submitted either at pseudo massage (single-blinded) or two minutes of rest. Results showed no statistical differences on jump height between pre and post analysis nor between experimental conditions (massage 18.7 ± 4.1 vs 18.2 ± 4.1; pseudo massage 19.1 ± 4.0 vs 8.3 ± 3.8; rest 19.0 ± 4.0 vs 18.7 ± 3.9 cm). There were also no statistical differences in the TQR results between experimental conditions (massage 16.2 ± 4.3; pseudo massage 16.4 ± 3.9; rest 15.9 ± 2.6 ua). Both massage and pseudo massage did not affect performance on vertical jump and TQR.

RESUMO

Monteiro, ER, Costa, PB, Corrêa Neto, VG, Hoogenboom, BJ, Steele, J, and da Silva Novaes, J. Posterior thigh foam rolling increases knee extension fatigue and passive shoulder range-of-motion. J Strength Cond Res 33(4): 987-994, 2019-The purpose of this study was to analyze the acute effects of different foam rolling (FR) volumes on knee extensors fatigue and shoulder passive range-of-motion (PROM). Twelve recreationally active women were recruited for participation in 2 experiments separated by 3 weeks, and the same subjects performed all procedures in each experiment. In experiment 1, subjects performed 3 sets of knee extensions using a predetermined 10 repetition maximum load to momentary concentric failure: control condition (CG) with passive rest and 2 FR conditions for the hamstrings using 2 volumes (60 and 120 seconds; FR60 and FR120, respectively). Experiment 2 consisted of 2 shoulder flexion and extension baseline PROM tests. Following baseline measures, subjects performed a single 60-second bout of FR on the hamstrings. Outcome PROM measures were measured through manual goniometry immediately (post-0), 10 minutes (post-10), 20 minutes (post-20), 30 minutes (post-30), 24 hours (post-24), and 48 hours (post-48) after the intervention to assess the effects on PROM over an extended period. Fatigue index indicated significantly greater fatigue resistance for CG when compared with FR60 (p = 0.035; [INCREMENT]% = 6.49) and FR120 (p = 0.002; [INCREMENT]% = 9.27), and there were no significant differences between FR60 and FR120 (p = 0.513; [INCREMENT]% = 2.78). Shoulder flexion PROM increased in post-0 as compared to baseline 1 (p = 0.002; d = 1.58), baseline 2 (p < 0.001; d = 1.92), and baseline higher measurement (p < 0.001; d = 1.59) and remained increased for post-10 as compared to baseline 2 (p = 0.017; d = 1.55). Shoulder extension PROM increased in post-0 as compared to baseline 1 (p < 0.001; d = 2.61), baseline 2 (p < 0.001; d = 2.83), and baseline higher measurement (p < 0.001; d = 2.59) and remained increased for post-10 as compared to baseline 1 (p < 0.001; d = 1.93), baseline 2 (p < 0.001; d = 2.16), and baseline higher measurement (p < 0.001; d = 1.91) and post-20 as compared to baseline 1 (p = 0.008; d = 1.58), baseline 2 (p = 0.001; d = 1.85), and baseline higher measurement (p = 0.011; d = 1.55). Foam rolling volumes equal to or greater than 60 seconds are detrimental to the ability to continually produce force in the lower extremity and should not be applied to the hamstrings muscle group between sets of knee extensions. PROM results indicate that FR applied to the hamstrings demonstrates an increase in both shoulder flexion and extension PROM. This work may have important clinical (rehabilitation) implications, as it demonstrates global effects of FR on functional outcomes.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Over the past few years, noninvasive devices based on radiofrequency and/or lasers and light sources technologies are being used for the treatment of cellulite. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of an expedited treatment for cellulite and body measures. METHODS: Fifteen female subjects aged from 20 to 42 years were enrolled. All the subjects underwent three treatment sessions of 30 minutes for each area in three consecutive days. Subjects were evaluated at 7, 30, and 60 post treatment. Outcome measurements included Cellulite Severity Scale (CSS) grading, body mass index (BMI), and thigh circumferences were recorded. Celluqol(®) and a satisfaction questionnaire were also applied. RESULTS: At 2 months, improvements in at least one of the four CSS categories were found in 14 of the 15 subjects (93%) while 60% of patients showed improvement in both the number and depth of depressions at follow-up visits. Most of patients (93%) reported that they would get the treatment again. DISCUSSION: This was the first study to examine the effects of this device on cellulite performed over a shortened treatment period. The treatment proved to be safe and effective, representing a new treatment modality that is also time and cost-effective for physicians and patients.

RESUMO

Cellulite has a complex and multifactorial etiology. Synergistic action on treating cellulite has gained support in the treatment of cellulite. This study evaluated safety and efficacy of a bipolar radiofrequency, infrared, vacuum and mechanical massage device for cellulite treatment and reduction of body measures. This was a pilot study, which assessed 9 subjects who presented body mass index from 18 to 25 Kg/Kg and at least grade 6 in the Cellulite Severity Scale (CSS). All subjects underwent a 12-session treatment of posterior thighs and buttocks. There was a significant reduction of the hip circumference (p = 0.001), however, no changes in thigh circumferences were observed (p = 0.4). CSS has improved specifically on both buttocks [p = 0.002 (left side) and p = 0.038 (right side)], and no changes were observed on thighs. The studied device demonstrated efficacy in the reduction of cellulite severity and body circumference measures in the buttocks.
