RESUMO

Manganism has captured the imagination of neurologists for more than a century because of its similarities to Parkinson disease and its indirect but seminal role in the "l-dopa miracle." We present unpublished footage of the original case series reported in Neurology® in 1967 by Mena and Cotzias depicting the typical neurologic signs of manganism in 4 Chilean miners and their response to high doses of l-dopa.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: Analyzing the 20th century Colombian legal framework from the point of view of labor law, social security and public health for identifying concepts regarding occupational health and professional risk and trying to establish convergence and differences between such foci and whether they fulfilled a complementary view. METHOD: This work involved documentary research by means of thematic categorical analysis of the laws and statutes promulgated in 20th century Colombia, considering the main element or entity which should have regulated that related to professional risk or occupational health. RESULTS: The development of the 20th century Colombian legal framework regarding health at work was periodized, revealing the predominance of a view of social law focused on protecting dependent workers' work-related risks, as part of a tendency extending to the Colombian Sistema General de Riesgos Laborales. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed stages used for organizing the legal framework concerning social security regarding professional risk and occupational health facilitated some important elements being recognized concerning the social, legal and institutional context from which workers' health laws emerged. Tension was noted concerning statutes orientated towards redress and compensation regarding accidents at work and legislation emphasizing prevention.

This article, utilizing medical histories and municipal public health reports, focuses on tubercular men, women, and children of the working poor in Buenos Aires between 1885 and 1915. Crowded living conditions and an insanitary working environment increased the poor's susceptibility to tuberculosis. Both public health officials and physicians assumed that the living and working conditions and the immorality of the labouring class encouraged the spread of tuberculosis from their neighbourhoods to those of the elite. The Anti-Tuberculosis League and the efforts of doctors to bring about prevention and cures, which generally mirrored those of the United States and Europe, failed to decrease the death rate from tuberculosis in Buenos Aires between 1885 and 1915. Medical knowledge was limited, while public health officials had neither the time nor funding to change a system that was embedded in the working and living structures of the community. The tubercular poor chose to evade prevention policies and relied on the limited services of sanatoriums, clinics, and hospitals only as a last resort.
