Mares, which make up 90% of animals requiring reproductive assistance in commercial equine production systems, are subjected to strong breeding and reproductive efficiency pressure throughout their lives, but the effects of aging on overall and reproductive systems in particular; it often means that we are forcing the natural homeostasis mechanisms under pressure over time. The objective of this brief communication is to summarize some concepts related to the role and importance of equine endometrium, particularly in old mares, the most challenged category to achieve productive and efficiency goals established by humans. Endometritis is one of the most frequent and recurrent pathologies in equine gynecology and is responsible for enormous economic losses in the industry. Alterations of the microbiota, molecular signals and uterine endocrine microenvironment can lead to infertility, but degenerative phenomena associated with age and parity can lead to endometriosis altering maternal recognition of pregnancy and pregnancy maintenance. Maintaining horses in an adequate nutrition status and environment is essential to achieve pregnancy but also to obtain healthy offspring.(AU)

The aim of this research was to evaluate the effect of recombinant bovine somatotropin (bST) on pregnancy per artificial insemination (P/AI), cellular composition of the corpus luteum (CL) and endometrial gland morphometry. In Experiment 1, Nelore cows (n = 587) received a fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) protocol and, at insemination, received 0, 250 or 500 mg of bST subcutaneously (SC). In Experiment 2, Nelore cows (n = 243) received 0 or 500 mg of bST, SC, on D7 (D0 = day of FTAI). Blood samples were collected on D7 and D16 to measure progesterone (P4) concentrations. In Experiments 1 and 2, pregnancy diagnosis was performed 30 days after FTAI. In Experiment 3, Nelore heifers (n = 20) received a FTAI protocol, but were not inseminated, and on D0 (ovulation day), they received 0 (bST 0; n = 9) or 500 mg of bST (bST 500; n = 11), SC. The heifers were slaughtered on D15 (D0 = ovulation day), at which time the CL was evaluated for diameter, weight, a percentage of large (LLC) and small (SLC) luteal cells, and the concentration of progesterone in plasma measured. The number, perimeter and area of superficial and deep endometrial glands were evaluated. There was no difference in P/AI when bST was applied on D0 and D7. In Experiment 1, P/AI did not differ among treatments, with 59.28% (115/194), 58.38% (115/197) and 65.82% (129/196) for the bST 0, 250 and 500 treatments, respectively. In Experiment 2, P/AI did not differ between treatments, with 57.3% (71/124) and 60.5% (62/119) for the bST 0 and 500 treatments, respectively. Plasma progesterone concentrations on D16 was greater in the bST 500 (11.63 ±â€¯0.84 ng/mL) than bST 0 (9.83 ±â€¯0.88 ng/mL). In Experiment 3, there was no difference in ovarian diameter and weight, CL diameter, percentage of SLC, P4 concentrations and endometrial gland morphology. Heifers in the bST 500 treatment had heavier CL (3.11 ±â€¯0.32 vs. 2.25 ±â€¯0.20 g); however, the bST 0 treatment heifers had a greater percentage of LLC than did the bST 500 treatment (13.72 ±â€¯1.16% vs. 8.60 ±â€¯1.52). It was concluded that the doses of bST used in this study do not increase P/AI; however, they do cause changes in P4 concentration and the cellular composition of the CL.

Abstract Objective Different intrauterine environments may influence the maternal prepregnancy body weight (BW) variation up to 6 months postpartum. The objective of the present study was to verify the association of sociodemographic, obstetric, nutritional, and behavioral factors with weight variation in women divided into four groups: hypertensive (HM), diabetic (DM), smokers (SM), and control mothers (CM). Methods It was a convenience sample of 124 postpartum women recruited from 3 public hospitals in the city of Porto Alegre, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, between 2011 and 2016.Multiple linear regressions and generalized estimating equations (GEE) were conducted to identify the factors associated with maternal weight variation. For all GEE, the maternal weight measurements were adjusted for maternal height, parity, educational level, and the type of delivery, and 3 weight measurements (prepregnancy, preceding delivery, and 15 days postpartum) were fixed. Results A hierarchical model closely associated the maternal diagnosis of hypertension and a prepregnancy body mass index (BMI) classified as overweight with maternal weight gain measured up to the 6th month postpartum (the difference between the maternal weight at 6months postpartum and the prepregnancy weight). These results showed that the BW of the HM group and of overweight women increased ~ 5.2 kg 6 months postpartum, compared with the other groups. Additionally, women classified as overweight had a greater BW variation of 3.150 kg. Conclusion This evidence supports the need for specific nutritional guidelines for gestational hypertensive disorders, as well as great public attention for overweight women in the fertile age.


Resumo Objetivo Diferentes ambientes intrauterinos podem influenciar a variação de peso corporal pré-gestacional materno até 6 meses pós-parto. O objetivo do presente estudo foi verificar a associação de fatores sociodemográficos, obstétricos, nutricionais e comportamentais com a variação de peso em mulheres divididas em quatro grupos: hipertensas (HM), diabéticas (DM), tabagistas (SM) e controles (CM). Métodos Amostra de conveniência de 124 puérperas recrutadas em 3 hospitais públicos da cidade de Porto Alegre, Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil, entre 2011 e 2016. Regressões lineares múltiplas e modelos de equações de estimativas generalizadas (GEE) foram realizados para identificar os fatores associados à variação do peso materno. Para todas as GEE, as medidas de peso materno foram ajustadas para a estatura materna, paridade, escolaridade e tipo de parto, e três medidas de peso (prégravidez, anterior ao parto e 15 dias pós-parto) foram fixadas. Resultados Um modelo hierárquico associou o diagnóstico materno de hipertensão e o índice de massa corporal (IMC) pré-gestacional de sobrepeso com ganho de peso materno medido até o 6° mês pós-parto (diferença entre o peso materno aos 6 meses pós-parto e o peso pré-gestacional). Estes resultados mostraram que o grupo HM e mulheres comsobrepeso aumentaram o peso corporal em ~ 5,2 kg 6 meses pós-parto, em comparação com os demais grupos. Além disso, as mulheres classificadas com sobrepeso tiveram uma variação maior de peso corporal, de 3,150 kg. Conclusão Evidenciou-se a necessidade de diretrizes nutricionais específicas para distúrbios hipertensivos gestacionais, bem como de maior atenção dos serviços de saúde públicos para mulheres com excesso de peso em idade fértil.

Abstract Objective Frozen section examination is a rapid method for identifying products of conception in endometrial curetting, yet its accuracy is inconclusive. The purposes of this study is to determine the accuracy of frozen section analysis of endometrial curetting in pregnancies of unknown location, and to verify the relation of β-human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) level and endometrial thickness to the assessed accuracy. Methods We reviewed data from January 2009 to December 2014 of diagnostic curettages from women with suspected ectopic pregnancies sent for frozen section examination at a medical center. A frozen section diagnosis was considered accurate if it concurred with the final pathologic diagnosis. Results Of 106 frozen section studies, the diagnosis was accurate in 94 (88.7%). Of 79 specimens interpreted as negative on frozen sections (no products of conception noted), 9 (11.4%) were positive on final pathologic review. Three of the 27 (11.1%) specimens interpreted as positive by a frozen section failed to demonstrate products of conception on a final pathologic section. The sensitivity of frozen sections in the diagnosis of ectopic pregnancy was 72.7%, specificity 95.9%, positive predictive value 88.9%, negative predictive value 88.6%, and accuracy 88.6%. A statically significant correlation was found between β-hCG level and high accuracy of the frozen section technique (p< 0.001). No correlation was found between endometrial thickness and the accuracy of the frozen section technique. Conclusion The accuracy of frozen section examination was high and was found to correlate with β-hCG level, but not with endometrial thickness.

Introducción: el endometrio es fundamental para el diagnóstico de entidades que constituyen problemas de salud para la población femenina. Resulta de vital importancia para el patólogo el hallazgo de diferencias entre la morfología del endometrio de la hiperplasia endometrial y el adenocarcinoma endometrioide que le permitan realizar el diagnóstico diferencial ente estas dos entidades. Objetivo: determinar las diferencias morfométricas para el diagnóstico histopatológico diferencial entre la hiperplasia endometrial compleja, el adenocarcinoma endometrioide y en el endometrio proliferativo normal. Materiales y métodos: se realizó un estudio observacional descriptivo de corte transversal y se aplicó morfometría a una muestra de 30 biopsias endometriales, con el objetivo de determinar las diferencias morfométricas para el diagnóstico histopatológico diferencial entre la hiperplasia endometrial compleja, el adenocarcinoma endometrioide y en el endometrio proliferativo normal. Se utilizó sistema morfométrico IMAGEN J 1.44p, se estudiaron las glándulas endometriales a las que se les halló la altura del epitelio glandular. Resultados: la altura del epitelio en las glándulas de tamaño menor, intermedio y mayor, expresaron estrechas diferencias entre la hiperplasia endometrial compleja, el adenocarcinoma endometrioide y en el endometrio proliferativo normal y que existen diferencias entre la hiperplasia endometrial y el adenocarcinoma endometrioide cuando se estudian variables que tiene en cuenta la morfología glandular. Conclusiones: se concluyó que existen diferencias entre la hiperplasia endometrial y el adenocarcinoma endometrioide cuando se estudian variables que tiene en cuenta la morfología glandular (AU).


Introduction: the endometrium is fundamental for the diagnosis of entities that are a health problem for female population. It is very important for the pathologist to find differences between the morphology of the endometrium of the endometrial hyperplasia and the endometrial adenocarcinoma allowing to perform the differential diagnosis between these two entities. Objective: to determine the morphometric differences for the differential histopathological diagnosis between the complex endometrial hyperplasia, the endometrial adenocarcinoma and the normal proliferative endometrium. Materials and methods: a cross-sectional, descriptive, observational study was applied and the morphometry was applied to a sample of 30 endometrial biopsies, with the objective of determining the morphometric differences for the histopathological differential diagnosis among complex endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial adenocarcinoma and normal proliferative endometrium. The morphometric system IMAGEN J 1.44p was used and the endometrial glands were studied and the height of their glandular epithelium was calculated. Results: the minor, intermediate and higher height of the epithelium in the glands expressed tight differences among complex endometrial hyperplasia, endometrial adenocarcinoma and normal proliferative endometrium, and showed that there are differences between endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial adenocarcinoma when the studied variables take into account the glandular morphology. Conclusions: there are differences between endometrial hyperplasia and endometrial adenocarcinoma when there are studied variables taking into account the glandular morphology (AU).

Uterine acute post-breeding inflammation is a physiological tissue response to the entry of exogenous elements, with persistent endometritis being the main pathology responsible for subfertility in the mare (Equus ferus caballus; Linnaeus, 1758). Mares can be classified as susceptible or resistant to endometritis according to their ability to remove intrauterine fluid within 48 hr after experimental inoculation. Endometrial biopsy is a technique that is commonly used to establish the degree of lesions that can affect the fertility of the mare. Endometrial histomorphometry is an objective and highly precise diagnostic method. The aim of this study was to compare, during oestrus, the endometrial histomorphometry of mares previously classified as susceptible (SM) or resistant (RM) to endometritis. Endometrial biopsies from 24 mares at the oestrus phase of the cycle were obtained. For the histomorphometric analysis, samples were histologically processed and subjected to routine Haematoxylin-Eosin staining. For the evaluation, the variables were considered as follows: 1-Height of the lining and glandular epithelia (Lining SM = 15.9 µm vs. RM = 13.3 µm; Glandular SM = 15.0 µm vs. RM = 13.0 µm); 2-Perpendicular diameters of endometrial glands (SM = 51.3 µm vs. RM = 44.8 µm); 3-Number of endometrial glands per field (SM = 24.8 glands/field vs. RM = 20.5 glands/field). The results from this study suggest the existence of a relationship between the studied characteristics and the susceptibility/resistance to post-breeding endometritis in mares. Thus, increased epithelial height, greater glandular density and greater development of the glands during oestrus would be related to a higher susceptibility to endometritis.

The objectives of this study were to determine: a) the agreement between postmortem endometrial cytology, uterine biopsy and presence of intrauterine fluid in apparently normal genital tracts collected from culled dairy cows; b) the agreement between results obtained from paired uterine horns using the different diagnosis methods; and c) the microorganisms isolated from uteri with cytological endometritis. One hundred grossly normal genital tracts from Holstein cows were collected at a local slaughterhouse. Samples for cytology, histopathology and bacteriology were obtained from both uterine horns, and presence of any intrauterine content was determined after opening the tracts. Cut-off values used for positive cytology were ≥5% PMN (polymorphonuclear neutrophils). Data were analyzed by ROC curve analysis, Cohens Kappa method and Chi-square tests. Presence of inflammatory infiltrate and its endometrial distribution were the only histological parameters significantly correlated with cytology results (AUC: 0.780 and 0.694, respectively). Agreement between histology and cytology was moderately high for presence of infiltrate (kappa = 0.55) and low for infiltrate distribution (kappa = 0.33). Other histological parameters (status of endometrial epithelium, endometrial glands or fibrosis), intrauterine content or bacteriology were not correlated with cytology. Presence of intrauterine content was significantly (P = 0.036) related with biopsy results. Moderately high agreement was observed between paired uterine horns for cytology (kappa = 0.65) and biopsy (kappa = 0.74). Bacteriology was not related with cytology or biopsy, but different bacteria were isolated from cytology negative or positive uteri. It was concluded that endometrial cytology, although less sensitive than biopsy, is a useful tool for diagnosing subclinical endometrial inflammation.(AU)

In this study it was determined the progression of uterine gland development from late gestation to puberty in domestic felids. Cell proliferation patterns for luminal (LE), glandular epithelium (GE) as well as stroma (S) were also described. Twenty-four uteri from female kittens: 45 and 65 days of gestation and 1 to 5, 8, 12, 16, 20 and 24 weeks postnatally were obtained. Uterine cross-sections were submitted for routine histological and immunohistochemical quantification of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) techniques. Although prenatal uteri presented no indication of adenogenesis, 1 week old uteri revealed an incipient budding of the LE. During the second week budding increased and a mild degree of tubulogenesis of the GE into the stroma was detected. From the third to fifth weeks coiling, branching and cross-sections of glands appeared. These latter findings were more evident in week 8 when GE began to penetrate through much of the S to week 24. PCNA immunostaining revealed that DNA synthesis decreased throughout the study in the 3 cell compartments; (P < 0.01). Luminal proliferation began prenatally, it maintained up to postnatal week 8 to markedly decrease to puberty (P < 0.01). From postnatal week 3 up to week 8, GE mitotic activity was elevated becoming low thereafter (P < 0.01). Stroma actively proliferated prenatally (P < 0.01), diminishing up to week 8 (P < 0.01) and again during the last weeks (P < 0.01) of the study. It was concluded that, in domestic felids, proliferation of LE begins prenatally, histological uterine adenogenesis commenced during the first postnatal week and both events concluded by postnatal weeks 5-8.

This article describes the effects of MPA use on the canine uterus using stereological methods. Entire reproductive tracts were removed from normal healthy canine bitches (Canis lupus familiaris) and grouped as: nulliparous (n = 11), multiparous (n = 11) and MPA-treated (n = 11; nulliparous; two treatments; 5 mg/kg). 1 cm samples were cut from the corpus, horn and uterine tube and fixed in 10% formaldehyde. Sections of each were mounted on slides and stained with hematoxylin-eosin. We assessed the fraction area for components of endometrium and myometrium and VV (volume density) and SV (surface density) of the gland and stroma using the M36 test system provided by the STEPanizer Stereological Tool. No gross histological differences were observed between study groups in the uterine tube, uterine corpus and horn. The wall of the uterine corpus and horn in MPA-treated bitches was characterized as being thicker than in the other groups. A cross-section of the uterine corpus revealed no differences between components of uterine wall in the corpus and horn; however, differences were observed in the volume density [VV; %] in variables such as: VV[str.vasc/uterus] (nulliparous vs. multiparous; p = 0.0019) and VV[str.supravasc/uterus] (multiparous vs. nulliparous and MPA; p = 0.0035). In the endometrial gland, differences were detected in SV[gland/endom] (multiparous vs. MPA, p = 0.0442). In the uterine horn, differences were only observed in the variable VV[lumen.gland/endom] (multiparous vs. MPA; p = 0.0019). This study shows quantitative changes in the architecture of the endometrium and myometrium in all the uterine segments, mainly morphological endometrial gland changes of the uterine corpus, increasing the surface area per unit of volume; however, these changes usually do not differ quantitatively from those observed in the uterus of multiparous bitches.

Morphological information on the reproductive system allows the understanding of ecological and behavioural aspects of different species as well as supports the development of conservational strategies. Unfortunately, for many species, not enough relevant and precise information is available. In the present study, we describe for the first time the macroscopic and histological aspects of female genital organs and external female genitalia of Saimiri macrodon, Saimiri cassiquiarensis and Saimiri vanzolinii. We perform a comparison between these three peripatric species and investigate the possibility of their reproductive morphology to act as a factor of reproductive isolation. We have found that these species share many similarities in most of the analysed organs. Although some important differences were identified that may play an important role in the evolution of the components of the reproductive system of these species, those differences are not enough to compose a mechanism of reproductive isolation for these three species of Saimiri. The results of this study may be used to support the development of biotechnological approaches of reproduction and strategies for conservation programmes and management of threatened species of this genus, particularly S. vanzolinii, considered to be a vulnerable species to extinction.

OBJECTIVES: To examine whether endometrial thickness and the presence of endometrioma are independent predictors of clinical pregnancy rate or simply associated with poor ovarian response (POR). METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study assessing the first cycle of all women undergoing in-vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) in a university hospital in Brazil between January 2011 and December 2012. Only the first cycle of each woman within the study period was considered. Women over 40 years of age and those who used clomiphene citrate during controlled ovarian stimulation (COS) or did not undergo embryo transfer were excluded from analysis. POR was defined as ≤ three oocytes retrieved and a thin endometrium was defined as endometrial thickness ≤ 7.0 mm on the day of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration. We performed a multiple regression analysis to identify which of the following parameters were independent predictors of clinical pregnancy: age, number of oocytes retrieved, endometrial thickness or the presence of endometrioma. RESULTS: Within the study period, 787 women began COS, but 270 were excluded from analysis. Among the 517 women analyzed, those who achieved pregnancy were younger and yielded more oocytes. The proportion of POR was higher in women with a thin endometrium (17/57 (29.8%) vs 80/460 (17.4%); P = 0.03) and in women with endometrioma (15/39 (38.5%) vs 82/478 (17.2%); P = 0.002). The results of regression analysis showed that only age and the number of oocytes retrieved were independent predictors of pregnancy. Additionally, we observed higher clinical pregnancy rates in women with a thin endometrium from whom ≥ seven oocytes were retrieved (11/25 (44.0%)) compared to women with normal endometrial thickness (99/241 (41.1%)). Considering only women from whom ≥ four oocytes were retrieved, we observed reasonable pregnancy rates in those with a thin endometrium (14/40 (35.0%)) and in those with endometrioma (9/24 (37.5%)). CONCLUSION: Both a thin endometrium and the presence of endometrioma are associated with POR but are not important independent predictors of clinical pregnancy. Good pregnancy rates can be observed when these conditions are present in women with a good ovarian response.

Forest destruction has progressively hampered the survival of many species, and this is why it is so important to study of the lives of primates in captivity. This study aimed to describe the morphological aspects of the female reproductive tract of Sapajus apella. We used five animals obtained from the National Primate Center, Ananindeua - PA. The ovaries were paired, compact and symmetrical and had a smooth surface. The uterine tubes were bilateral and convoluted in adult animals and straight in young individuals. The uterus was simple and located in the pelvic region. The vagina was a long structure due to the position of the uterus. The external genitalia were located in the urogenital perineum and consisted of dark pigmented labia majora and labia minora, a vaginal vestibule as long as the vagina and a well-developed clitoris. The results showed that the genitals of S. apella resemble those of other Neotropical primates.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether soybean extracts and estrogens present additive effects on adult rat uterus. METHODS: Fifty ovariectomized rats were randomly divided into five equal groups of ten animals: Control, treated with vehicle; SE46 and SE120, treated with 46 and 120 mg/kg soybean concentrated extract (SE), respectively; EE, treated with conjugated equine estrogens (CE) 50 µg/kg; SE120 + EE, treated with 50 µg/kg (CE) plus 120 mg/kg SE. The substances were administered daily by gavage for 21 consecutive days. Thereafter the animals were weighed and killed by decapitation; trunk blood was collected for hormone determinations. Uteri were removed immediately and fixed in 10% formaldehyde, followed by dehydration, embedding in paraffin and 6-m sections staining with hematoxylin and eosin for histomorphometric analyses of myometrium and endometrium. After ANOVA analysis of the data, the study was complemented with the Tukey-Kramer test for multiple comparisons. RESULTS: The concentrated extract of soybean at high concentration (SE 120 kg/mg) and estrogens proved to have a trophic effect on the uterus (endometrium and myometrium) of castrated rats. In groups SE120, EE and SE120 + EE, all morphometric parameters examined (number of glands, eosinophils, blood vessels and the glandular area) were increased. No significant addictive effects of soybean extract plus estrogens were detected in the SE120 + EE group. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that soy extract has a trophic effect on rat uterine structures. Treatment of ovariectomized rats with a concentrated soy extract in combination with conjugated estrogens had no addictive effect on the uterine response.

A large majority of pregnancy loss in cattle occus during the firt three weeks afeer conception particularly during the pperi-implantation period. This review integrantes established and new information on the biological role of ovarian progesterone (P4), prostaglandina (PGs) and interferon tau (IFNT) in endometrial function and conceptus elongation during the peri-implantation period of pregnancy in ruminants. Progesterone is secreted by the ovarian corpus luteum (CL) and is the u nequivocal hormone of pregnancy. Prostaglandins are produced from both the endometrium as well as conceptus trophectoderm during early pregnancy. Interferon tau is produced solely by the conceptus trophectoderm and is the maternal recognition of pregnancy signal that inhibits production of luteolytic pulses of PG F2α by the endometrium to maintain the CL and thus production of P4. Conceptus endometrial interactions in ruminants are complex and involve carefully orchestrated temporal and spatial alterations in endometrial gene expression during pregnancy. Available results support the idea that the individual, interactive, and coordinated actions of P4, PGs, and IFNT regulate uterine receptivity to conceptus implantation by controlling expression of genes in t he endometrium and that their actions are essential for conceptus elongation. One outcome of gene expression changes in the endometrial epithelia is alterations in lumenal secretions that govern conceptus elongation via effects on the trophectoderm. An increased knowledge of conceptus endometrial interactions during early pregnancy in ruminants is necessary to understand and elucidate the causes of infertility and recurrent pregnancy loss and to provide a basis for new strategies to improve fertility, pregnancy outcomes and thus reproductive efficiency.(AU)

Uno de los factores que incide en la capacidad reproductiva de los ovinos es la presencia de receptores de estrógeno en el tracto genital, donde regulan la expresión de numerosos genes comprometidos en su desarrollo morfológico y funcional. Posiblemente el desempeño reproductivo de diferentes razas de ovejas podría estar determinado por la expresión diferencial de estos receptores. En el presente estudio, se evaluó comparativamente el nivel de expresión del receptor de estrógeno en tejido endometrial de ovejas prepúberes de alta prolificidad (raza Texel) y de prolificidad estándar (raza Araucana) mediante análisis inmunohistoquímico. Se concluye que el nivel de expresión del receptor de estrógeno en tejido estromal, epitelial, de revestimiento y glandular del endometrio de ovejas de raza Texel es significativamente mayor que en ovejas de raza Araucana. Esta diferencia en el nivel de expresión de estos receptores podría estar relacionado con la diferencia de prolificidad entre estas razas...


A factor that affects the reproductive capacity of sheep is the presence of estrogen receptors in the genital tract, where they regulate the expression of numerous genes involved in morphological and functional development. Possibly the reproductive performance of different breeds of sheep could be determined by the differential expression of these receptors. In the present study, we evaluated comparatively level of estrogen receptor expression in endometrial tissue ewe lambs high prolificacy (Texel) and standard prolificacy (Araucana) by immunohistochemical analysis. It is concluded that the level of estrogen receptor expression in stromal tissue, epithelial lining and endometrial glandular Texel Sheep is of greater intensity than in ewes Araucana, this difference in the expression level of these receptors could be related to the increased prolificacy of Texel breed...

BACKGROUND: Cervical and endometrial measurement in the gynecological and obstetric patients is of vital importance. There is no consensus for the correct way in which should be made the measurement, more than anything is for an opinion of some experts. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether there are differences in measurement of endometrial or sagittal cross section of the uterus and cervix in the measurement of fractional linear fashion or along the cervical canal. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using a transvaginal ultrasound, was measured in a transverse and longitudinal endometrial lining. And by fractional measuring along the cervical canal and a linear manner from the internal to the external. RESULTS: We studied a total of 63 patients. The mean endometrial transversal measurement in a cross was 7.1. mm (SD +/- 3.3) The mean endometrial longitudinally measured were: 7.9 mm (SD +/- 3.4). The mean cervical measurement was fractionally 3.3 cm (SD +/- 0.4) Mean cervical linear measurement was 3.9 cm (SD +/- 0.4). Using student's t test where the value of p in the endometrial measurement was 0.0871 and p value in cervical measurement was 0.009, the latter being statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: With respect to the measurement of the endometrial lining, there is no significant difference do any of the two different techniques. However, measurement of the cervix, another significant difference (p = 0.009), so it should be further investigated which of these two techniques is the right way to establish more accurate diagnoses.
