Introduction: the persistence of microorganisms in root canals is one of the main factors of endodontic failure. Therefore, the importance of knowing the antimicrobial properties of the different types of sealants. Objective: to make a comparison based on the available evidence on the antimicrobial activity of the different endodontics sealers. Material and methods: the information was collected from PubMed and Google Academic databases in English and Spanish, published in the period 2014-2023. Results: a large number of microorganisms are present in the different types of infections of endodontic origin, more than 500 microbiological species have been identified, including bacteria, fungi, archaea and viruses. Sealer cements can be classified according to their chemical composition, into cements based on zinc oxide-eugenol, calcium hydroxide, based on glass ionomer, silicone, resin and bioceramics. Conclusion: sealer cements that showed the highest antimicrobial activity against persistent microorganisms were zinc oxide-eugenol, resin, and bioceramic-based cements. However, it was identified that each author used different methods and times, therefore, it is not possible to accurately define which sealer cement has the best antimicrobial capacity (AU)

Objective: To evaluate the degree of apical filtration with diaphanization technique, using two bioceramic sealers and single cone technique with taper, ex vivo. Materials and methods: 60 extracted single-root human mandibular premolars were used. The instrumentation was carried out with primary file 25/.07 (WaveOne Gold, Dentsply Maillefer), according to the manufacturer's protocol. Irrigation was done with 2.5% NaOCl and 17% EDTAC. For obturation, the sample was randomly divided in 4 groups (n=15). Group 1: Single cone and Bio C Sealer. Group 2: Single cone and MTA Fillapex. Negative control group: it was not obturated. Positive control group: Single cone and AH Plus. In all samples, two layers of nail polish were applied to the entire tooth surface with exception of apical third and the positive control group, which was completely glazed. Filtration medium: black Chinese ink by passive diffusion. It was diaphanized with Robertson technique. AutoCad 2022 program was used to measure filtration in linear millimeters. Data were analyzed using Kruskal-Wallis test, followed by post hoc comparisons using Conover method (p < 0.05, significant). Results: Filtration with Bio C Sealer, MTA Fillapex, negative control and positive control had a mean (minimum-maximum) of 0 (0-2), 1 (0-3), 6 (2-12) and 0 (0-0); no significant differences between Bio C Sealer and MTA Fillapex (p > 0.05), nor between Bio C Sealer and positive control (p > 0.05); but with significant differences between MTA Fillapex and positive control (p < 0.05), and between negative control and any of the other three groups (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Obturation with Bio C Sealer would achieve a level of sealing similar to obtained with the positive control; while obturation with MTA Fillapex would produce a slightly less effective seal than the positive control. However, filtration would not vary substantially between fillings with Bio C Sealer and MTA Fillapex (AU)

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate over time the bond strength to dentin of different resin composites (RBCs) associated with the universal adhesive system applied with self-etching or total-etching strategies. METHODS: 60 human third molars were obtained, randomly divided into experimental groups (n= 10) according to RBCs: methacrylate-based nanofilled (Z350 XT); low-viscosity Ormocer-based bulk-fill (Admira Fusion X-base Universal); or high-viscosity Ormocer-based bulk-fill composite (Admira Fusion X-tra). The adhesion procedure was performed using a universal adhesive (Futurabond U) applied in self-etching or total-etching mode. Occlusal preparations (Class I) were made, measuring 4 mm in mesiodistal length, 4 mm in depth, and 3 mm in buccolingual height. The cavities were restored considering the RBCs and adhesive strategies, and the light curing was performed using a LED unit (BluePhase) as recommended by the manufacturers. For this, the nanofilled RBCs were inserted by the oblique incremental technique while the bulk-fill RBCs were inserted in single increments. The samples were stored in water for 24 hours in an oven; to be sectioned, the sticks were randomly separated, stored in distilled water for 24 hours (immediate) or 12 months (long-term), and taken to the universal machine for a microtensile test (MPa). The fractured sticks were examined to classify the type of fracture. The results were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey's test (α= 0.05). RESULTS: The MPa values of methacrylate-based nanofilled or high-viscosity Ormocer-based RBC were not affected by the strategy used to apply the universal adhesive system (P> 0.05). However, for the low-viscosity Ormocer-based RBC, higher values were obtained when the total-etching strategy was used compared to the self-etching mode (P< 0.05). After 12 months, when using the total-etching strategy low-viscosity Ormocer-based RBC, higher MPa values were obtained compared to the other materials (P< 0.05). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Regardless of the adhesive strategy used, the high-viscosity RBCs, whether based on methacrylate or Ormocer, showed similar adhesive behavior. Low-viscosity Ormocer-based RBC showed greater long-term bond strength associated with the universal adhesive applied in the total-etching strategy.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To evaluate the clinical longevity of bulk-fill resins and ormocer composites compared to conventional nanofill and nanohybrid resins in posterior permanent teeth. METHODS: PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, Cochrane Library, and Scielo were electronically searched for randomized clinical trials, without language restrictions. The extracted data were analyzed using Review Manager, comparing the clinical behavior of bulk fill or ormocer restorations with nanofill or nanohybrid resins. Statistical analysis was performed with a significance level of 5% for all analyses (P= 0.05). The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane assessment tool. RESULTS: 11 randomized clinical trials were included, with an average follow-up time of 40.36 months. A total of 812 restorations were evaluated and 58 failures were analyzed: 18 of the 253 bulk-fill restorations (7.11%), 21 of the 173 (12.3%) ormocer restorations, and 20 of the 386 (5.18%) control group (nanofill or nanohybrid composites) restorations failed. In the meta-analysis, there was no significant difference between the bulk-fill and the control group (statistical power = 24.38%; P= 0.206; IC = 95%); whereas, when comparing between ormocer and control group, the control group exhibited better performance (statistical power = 81.62%; P= 0.0042; IC = 95%). CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Conventional nanofill and nanohybrid resins exhibited better clinical longevity than ormocer composites in posterior restorations, but when compared to bulk fill, they had similar performance.

RESUMO

Objective: The present study compared the effect of whitening mouthrinses (WM) on the color change of stained resin composites (RC). Material and Methods: Cylindrical specimens (6mm-diameter and 1mm-thickness) were prepared with the following RC (n=60/group): Filtek Z350XT (Z350- methacrylate-based), Admira Fusion (AD- ormocer-based), TPH3 (TPH- methacrylate-based), and Beautifil II (BII- giomer/methacrylate-based). The initial color was assessed with reflectance spectrophotometer using CIE L*a*b* system. The specimens were immersed in staining broth during 14 days, submitted to color evaluation (ΔE1) and randomly allocated in 4 subgroups (n=15), according to WM adopted: Listerine Whitening (LW-2% hydrogen peroxide), Plax Whitening (PW-1.5% hydrogen peroxide), Bromelain/papain (BP-experimental solution), and Deionized water (DW-negative control). The whitening cycle consisted of RC immersion in WM for 1 min and in artificial saliva for 30 min, simulating 12 weeks, and final color assessment was performed (ΔE2). Color change data were analysed by ANOVA and Tukey's tests (α=5%). Results: After staining, TPH showed the lowest ΔE1 values and Z350 showed the highest color change (p=0.001). The whitening effect promoted by LW was significantly higher than color alteration obtained with PW (ΔE2), and BII showed the highest color change values (ΔE2) after whitening cycle. Conclusion: LW exhibited the greatest whitening potential on stained RC, mainly with the Giomer (Beautifill II) and the Ormocer-based (Admira Fusion) materials. Bromelain/papain solution showed no whitening effect on stained RC. (AU)

To perform apexification technique in one appointment, clinically and radiographically evaluating the formation of apical hard barrier, with follow-up at nine months, when using bioceramic material in young permanent teeth. Materials and methods: 30 permanent upper incisors with open apex and history of trauma were treated, in patients of both genders and 18-40 years of ages. The teeth (n=30) were divided into two groups (n=15). Experimental group: apexification treatment was performed with EndoSequence Root Repair Material (EERR), control group: treatment with apical impression. Frequency distributions and descriptive statistics were determined for each variable according to scale of measurement and distribution. 95% CI, Chi-square test with calculation of adjusted standardized residuals and Fisher's test were performed. The level of significance p=0.05 was set. The differences in preoperative and postoperative manifestations according to group were not statistically significant (Fisher's p = 0.9140) and (Fisher's p = 0.992), respectively. No differences were found between proportions of preoperative radiological findings according to group. Measured quarterly, there were no significant differences between proportions of teeth with bone cortical continuity and with postoperative periapical radiolucency according to group, (p Fisher = 0.7780) and (p Fisher = 0.7909), respectively. Due to the small number of works that report its use for this technique, is necessary to carry out new clinical trials with larger sample sizes, to compare it with other materials and techniques, and determine if its success rate in the long term is greater than that of currently used materials and techniques (AU)

Aim: Ex vivo, tridimensional evaluation with cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), of the presence of voids, the obturation volume and adaption to the root canal walls with simulated internal root resorption, using injected gutta-percha or bioceramic sealer with single gutta-percha cone. Materials and methods: Ten maxillary extracted central human incisors were used and artificial internal root resorption was created in each one. For the root canal obturation, each tooth was subjected to two different experimental conditions successively, conforming two matched groups: Group I: EQ-V Master injected thermo plasticized gutta-percha system. Group II: gutta- percha point plus BioRoot RCS bioceramic sealer. First, the root canals were filled with injected gutta-percha and then, with the bioceramic sealer. Then the teeth were scanned with CBCT and subsequently a digital three-dimensional reconstruction was performed. The presence of voids, obturation volumne and the dentin wall surface covered by the filling material was quantitative analyzed through a software; at the coronal, middle (blister) and apical thirds. The data was analyzed by using Wilcoxon test (P<0.05). Results: The filling material volume and the dentin wall surface covered by it, was similar in both root canal obturation techniques. There was no significant difference between both groups (P>0.05). Conclusion: Although voids were observed in both groups (when the injected thermo plasticized gutta-percha system was used the voids were at the external surface and when BioRoot RCS + gutta-percha cone was used the voids were into the filling material), the obturation of simulated root canal resorption cavities was similar with both obturation techniques (AU)

The objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical and microbiological behavior of the ceramics based on lithium disilicate with extrinsic characterization. For this, 160 discs were made, divided into two large groups, with extrinsec characterization and without, after which each was divided into four groups (n = 20): Control, Wear, Biodegradation and Biodegradation with Wear. Fifteen samples from each group were submitted to the flexural strength test and 5 submitted to the microbiological adherence test. Prior to the destructive test of flexural strength, the representative samples of each group underwent complementary tests for surface characterization. The results were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis (mean and standard deviation) and inferential, using the parametric analysis of variance (ANOVA) two way and Tukey test ( = 0,05). The extrinsec characterization factor influenced the mechanical behavior of the ceramic, presenting statistical significance (p = 0.000), as well as the interaction between the type of experimental condition and the extrinsec characterization (p = 0.020). However, in the microbiological adherence, it was the experimental condition that influenced the microbiological behavior (p = 0.000), as well as the interaction between the experimental condition and the extrinsec characterization (p = 0.000). It was concluded that the makeup influenced the mechanical behavior of the ceramic, and the experimental condition influenced the microbiological adherence. The interaction between the factors influenced both the mechanical behavior and the microbiological adherence(AU)

RESUMO

Abstract The endodontic retreatment is a feasible solution when post-operative apical periodontitis persists or develops. The complete removal of the filling materials is important in order to ensure the unobstructed contact of the intracanal disinfectants with the microbes. As a new generation of bioceramic endodontic sealers has emerged, their removal efficacy from the root canal system during retreatment is a matter of concern among clinicians. The aim of this article is to provide a comprehensive review of the current literature on the retreatability of these novel obturating materials. A significant amount of bioceramic sealer remnants in the root canal walls was observed in all studies. Even though canal cleanliness could not be obtained at an ideal level, the re-establishment of the working length and patency can be considered manageable and comparable to other endodontic sealers.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of whitening toothpastes over the wear and surface roughness of ormocer and methacrylate composites. METHODS: Cylindrical specimens (n=120) were prepared using methacrylate-based composites (Filtek Z350 XT, TPH3 and GrandioSO) and a pure-ormocer composite (Admira Fusion). Brushing abrasion (100,000 strokes) was performed using whitening toothpastes containing different abrasives: alumina (Colgate Ultrawhite), perlite (CloseUp Whitening) and sodium bicarbonate (Kin Progressive Whitening). Wear and roughness alteration were evaluated. Additional analyses of microhardness, degree of conversion and scanning electron microscopy were also performed. RESULTS: Data were separately analyzed with Kruskal-Wallis and ANOVA tests. Statistically significant differences were found for the composites and whitening toothpastes (P<0.05). For all toothpastes, GrandioSO showed lower wear than Z350 XT and Admira Fusion, although non-significant differences in relation to TPH3 were observed. For perlite and bicarbonate-based toothpastes, Z350 XT, Admira Fusion and TPH3 did not present significant differences among them for wear. For alumina-based toothpaste, Z350 XT showed higher wear than TPH3, while Admira Fusion showed intermediate values. Higher wear and roughness alteration were observed after using alumina-containing toothpaste. All composites tested showed increased roughness after brushing. Z350 XT presented the lowest roughness alteration, while Admira Fusion the highest. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The alumina-containing whitening toothpaste significantly increased the wear and roughness of composites in relation to the other abrasives tested. However, using the ADA standards, the wear promoted by all whitening toothpastes tested would be considered clinically acceptable for all materials. The type of organic matrix in a composite is not the main factor that determines the wear rate, but also its interaction with the inorganic fillers and the filler content. The composite GrandioSO showed the lowest overall wear values, while Z350 XT resulted in the smoothest surfaces.

RESUMO

The aim of this study was to determine the degradation resistance of three new formulations-silorane-, Ormocer- and dimer-acid-based materials-and compare them to the traditional dimethacrylate-based materials. One silorane- (Filtek P90, P90), one Ormocer- (Ceram-X, CX), one dimer-acid- (N'Durance, ND) and two dimethacrylate-based (Filtek P60, P60; Tetric Ceram, TC) materials were investigated. Water sorption (Wsp) and solubility (Wsl) were determined after the materials were immersed in water for 28 days. Knoop hardness (KH) was determined before and after 24 h immersion in pure ethanol. The flexural-strength (FS) was determined by the bending test after one-week storage in a dry environment or after one-week immersion in pure ethanol. Data were submitted to analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's test (95%). The three new formulations showed lower Wsp than the dimethacrylate-based formulation. CX (0.50 ± 0.17%) and ND (0.72 ± 0.19%) exhibited the lowest Wsp, whereas P90 (0.02 ± 0.03%) and P60 (0.04 ± 0.03%) showed the lowest Wsl. All resins showed reduced Knoop hardness number (KHN) after ethanol immersion. P60 presented the lowest decrease in KH value (19 ± 5%). TC (48 ± 3%) and P90 (39 ± 9%) showed the highest KHN decrease after ethanol storage. The FS of CX, ND and TC were affected by ethanol storage. The new formulations did not improve the degradation resistance, as compared with the traditional methacrylate-based materials.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of simulated disinfections (2% glutaraldehyde, 1% sodium hypochlorite, and microwave energy) on the surface hardness of Trilux, Biocler, Biotone, New Ace, and Magister commercial artificial teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens (n = 10) were made with the teeth included individually in circular blocks of acrylic resin, leaving the labial surface exposed. Cycles of simulated chemical disinfection were accomplished with the specimens immersed in the solutions at room temperature for 10 minutes, followed by tap water washing for 30 seconds and storage in distilled water at room temperature for 7 days until the next disinfection. Simulated disinfection by microwave energy was carried out in a domestic oven with 1300 W at a potency of 50% for 3 minutes with the specimens individually immersed in 150 ml of distilled water. Control (no disinfection) and the experimental groups (first and third disinfection cycles) were submitted to Knoop hardness measurements with indentations at the center of the labial tooth surface. Data were submitted to repeated measure two-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Biocler, Magister, and Trilux showed lower surface microhardness when submitted to microwave. Lower microhardness for Biotone was promoted by hypochlorite, while no significant difference was shown for New Ace. The third disinfection cycle significantly decreased the tooth surface hardness only for microwave. CONCLUSIONS: Different disinfection methods promoted different effects on the microhardness of different types of artificial teeth. Surface microhardness of the teeth was less affected by the simulated chemical disinfections when compared to microwaved specimens.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To verify the influence of repeated microwave disinfections on the shear bond strength of two commercial types of teeth to acrylic resin, when the ridge lap surfaces were unmodified, bur abraded, bur grooved or etched by monomer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Eighty specimens (n = 10) were adhered to the tooth ridge lap surface, polymerised in a water bath at 74°C for 9 h. Microwaved specimens were individually immersed in 150 ml of water and submitted to five simulated disinfections in a microwave oven calibrated at 650 W for 3 min. Control specimens were not microwave treated. Shear bond strength tests were performed in an Instron machine with a cross-speed of 1 mm/min. The fracture load values were transformed into shear bond strength as a function of the bonding area (0.28 cm(2)). Data were submitted to ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Fractured areas were classified as adhesive, cohesive (resin or tooth) or mixed failures. RESULTS: Repeated microwave disinfections increased the shear strength of the tooth/resin bond. Mechanical retention in microwaved and non-microwaved procedures improved the shear bond strength. CONCLUSIONS: The different commercial types of teeth influenced shear bond strength values, with Biotone teeth showing the lower values.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the influence of matrix and filler content on degradation resistance of an experimental pure-ormocer and an dimethacrylate-based composite derived from a commercially available material. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A dimethacrylate- Grandio (GR) and a model pure ormocer-based-matrix ORMOCER (ORM) were used. Each material had three different types according to their filler content (% w/w): regular (87% and 86%), flowable (80% and 79%) and fissure sealer (70% and 69%) for GR and ORM respectively. Disc-shaped (1 mm thickness×10 mm diameter) samples were prepared for each material (n=6). Water sorption and solubility tests were adapted from ISO4049. To evaluate porosity, specimens were scanned at a resolution of 19.4 µm and 3D reconstructions were made. The volume ratio of pores in the specimens were calculated and expressed as percentages. The results were submitted to 2-way ANOVA (factors: matrix and filler content) and Tukey post-hoc statistic test (p=0.05). RESULTS: Filler content influenced the water sorption for the ormocer-matrix and the water solubility for the dimethacrylates. ORMOCER regular was a less porous material compared to flowable and sealer formulations. On the other hand, the filler content had no effect on porosity for Grandio. CONCLUSION: Modifications made in the pure ormocer-matrix formulation were not significantly important to produce a more water-stable material compared to the dimethacrylate-matrix composite materials.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: To assess the elastic modulus (EM), volumetric shrinkage (VS), and polymerization shrinkage stress (PSS) of experimental highly filled nanohybrid composites as a function of matrix composition, filler distribution, and density. METHODS: One regular viscosity nanohybrid composite (Grandio, VOCO, Germany) and one flowable nanohybrid composite (Grandio Flow, VOCO) were tested as references along with six highly filled experimental nanohybrid composites (four Bis-GMA-based, one UDMA-based, and one Ormocer®-based). The experimental composites varied in filler size and density. EM values were obtained from the "three-point bending" load-displacement curve. VS was calculated with Archimedes' buoyancy principle. PSS was determined in 1-mm thick specimens placed between two (poly)methyl methacrylate rods (Ø=6mm) attached to an universal testing machine. Data were analyzed using oneway ANOVA, Tukey's test (α=0.05), and linear regression analyses. RESULTS: The flowable composite exhibited the highest VS and PSS but lowest EM. The PSS was significantly lower with Ormocer. The EM was significantly higher among experimental composites with highest filler levels. No significant differences were found between all other experimental composites regarding VS and PSS. Filler density and size did not influence EM, VS, or PSS. SIGNIFICANCE: Neither the filler configuration nor matrix composition in the investigated materials significantly influenced composite shrinkage and mechanical properties. The highest filled experimental composite seemed to increase EM by keeping VS and PSS low; however, matrix composition seemed to be the determinant factor for shrinkage and stress development. The Ormocer, with reduced PSS, deserves further investigation. Filler size and density did not influence the tested parameters.
