RESUMO

Background: The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is the largest canid in South America and the only representative of its genus. The scientific literature presents studies referring to the management and anaesthesia of the species but is scarce in case of emergency procedures, and to date, there are no reports of anaesthesia for emergency procedures in a neonatal maned wolf. Thus, this study aimed to report xenotransfusion and emergency anaesthesia for thoracic limb amputation in an approximately 8-days-old maned wolf pup. Case: A maned wolf pup, approximately 8-day-old, with a history of an accident with an agricultural machine, was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Paraná - Palotina Sector (HVP - UFPR) with a grade III open fracture of left radius and ulna. At the physical evaluation, bullous rales were observed in the right caudal lobe on pulmonary auscultation, hypoglycemia and severe dehydration, the latter being determined by the occurrence of enophthalmos, increased capillary refill time and skin turgor (3 s). The hemogram revealed regenerative hypochromic macrocytic anaemia, thrombocytopenia and leukopenia, and the chest radiograph showed alveolar pattern opacification, associated with the presence of air bronchograms in the caudal lobes, more evident on the right side, suggestive of pulmonary contusion. Considering the laboratory alterations and the need for amputation of the thoracic limb, xenotransfusion was chosen before the anaesthetic procedure. The animal was pre-medicated with methadone 0.2 mg/kg and anaesthetic induction was performed with propofol titrated to effect, requiring 10 mg/kg. This was followed by endotracheal intubation and anaesthetic maintenance using the partial intravenous technique with an infusion of 5 µg/kg/h of remifentanil and Isoflurane vaporised through a non-rebreathing system in oxygen at 0.6. Anaesthetic monitoring included heart rate and electrocardiogram tracing, respiratory rate, oxyhemoglobin saturation, end-tidal partial pressure of carbon dioxide, systemic blood pressure by the oscillometric method, and oesophageal body temperature. Although the blood tests after the transfusion showed an increase in hematocrit, changes suggestive of a delayed hemolytic reaction because of the transfusion were also noticed. Discussion: Preanesthetic stabilisation is critical, as anaesthesia of unstable patients may result in a higher risk of anaesthetic complications. Critically ill patients may present systemic imbalances that can trigger pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic changes of anaesthetics and analgesics. Neonates have several marked physiological differences, since some organs are still immature, have a high body volume of water, and present a reduced amount of total fat and concentrations of circulating proteins, making it necessary to adjust protocols and doses used for these patients. Blood transfusion between the same species is always the best option, though xenotransfusion becomes an option when there is no homologous donor available. However, it can present a great risk to life, as there is a lack of studies regarding the blood typing of the species and blood compatibility tests. We concluded that there was an increase in hematocrit after 24 h of xenotransfusion and, even with signs of delayed hemolytic reaction observed in the blood test, the patient did not show specific clinical signs of transfusion reaction. The pup was sensitive to methadone but required a high dose of propofol for anaesthetic induction. The use of methadone as a pre-anaesthetic agent and the infusion of remifentanil provided adequate analgesia based on the parameters evaluated.

RESUMO

This study aimed to describe successful cryopreservation of sperm from maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Three ejaculates from 2 maned wolves were collected by digital manipulation of the penis and evaluated subjectively, centrifuged and frozen in BotuCrio® (Botupharma, Botucatu, Brazil) or Tris-yolk egg extender. Spermatozoa were thawed at 37ºC/30s or 70ºC/4s and evaluated for kinetics, morphology, plasma and acrosome membrane integrity, mitochondrial potential, hydrogen peroxide, superoxide anion and lipid peroxidation. From 5 thawed samples, two had sperm total motility >55% (56.0% and 64.0%) and progressive motility ~35% (35% and 40%), both frozen with Tris-yolk egg. Plasma and acrosome membrane integrity decreased and percentage of sperm defects increased post-thawing. We concluded that is possible to freeze spermatozoa from maned wolves using semen collection and processing methods applied for domestic dogs.

RESUMO

Background: Calcium is essential for the healthy development of animals, especially regarding bone formation. Diversefactors influence calcium metabolism, and failure in any of these points may result in metabolic bone diseases. Ricketsis an uncommon disease of growing bones occurring exclusively in young animals, it is characterized by the failure ofosteoid to calcify and can be a result of lack of vitamin D, imbalance of calcium and phosphorus or hereditary conditions.Nutritional origin is more frequent in veterinary medicine, but it has become rarer after the availability of balanced commercial rations. This report describes the diagnosis and treatment of rickets in a crab-eating fox puppy.Case: A 3-month-old male crab-eating fox was presented with ataxia and angular deviation of the tibia and radius/ulnawith suspected osteometabolic disease. It was part of a group of three orphan siblings hand-raised. The other two siblingsdid not present any clinical signs. All three animals presented pale mucous membranes and were infected by ancylostoma, coccidia, toxocara, and sarcocystis. Radiographic findings of the affected animal showed generalized osteopenia of theentire skeleton associated with widening radiolucent distal physeal plates and cupping of the metaphysis, changes classical of rickets. The other two siblings presented no skeletal alterations and complete blood count and biochemistry of allthree animals were taken for comparison, including serum vitamin D and PTH. All three animals presented lymphopenia(5.4-9.3 x 103/uL, reference range 10.3-16.5 x 103/uL), hypoproteinemia (5.1-5.3 g/dL, reference range 5.9-8.2 g/dL),low levels of creatinine (0.4-0.6 mg/dL, reference range 0.7-1.2 mg/dL), increased ALP (181-285 U/L, reference range209.7-267 U/L) and CK (421-500 U/L, reference range for domestic dogs 16-140 U/L). The affected fox presented ionizedcalcium (10.9 mg/dL, reference range for domestic dogs 9.3-11.5 mg/dL) and vitamin...(AU)

RESUMO

Cerdocyon thous is the South American canid with great geographic distribution. To the south of Ecuador, two isolated populations have been identified, living in different average temperatures and food availability. The objective was to measure the length, width, thickness and volume of the kidneys, length of renal vessels, and verify the renal skeletopy in two populations of C. thous. Kidneys and renal vessels were measured from 34 cadavers collected on highways in the Brazilian territory. From the Atlantic Forest biome (latitude 22º), 14 specimens (seven males and seven female) were analyzed, and from the Pampa biome (latitude 29º), 20 specimens (eight males and twelve female). On average, in the right antimere the kidneys measured 49.9 ´ 25.2 ´ 24.4 mm, had a volume of 16.5 cm3, the renal artery measured 21.3 mm and the renal vein 19.4 mm. In the left antimere, the kidneys measured 49.3 ´ 24.4 ´ 22.8 mm, with a  volume of 14.6 cm3 and the artery and vein measured 21.0 mm and 28.4 mm, respectively. The right kidney was always cranial and predominantly positioned ventrally to vertebrae L1L3, while the left one was positioned ventrally to vertebrae L2L4. There was no difference in the comparison between sexes or antimeres. Most renal dimensions were significantly higher in the specimens from the Pampa biome, possibly due to the body size and type of diet.(AU)

RESUMO

The maned wolf is a threatened canid species native to South America. Previous studies have suggested the species exhibits induced ovulation. In captive breeding facilities, reproductive success is low while rates of neonatal mortality are high. Females that are not recommended for breeding are frequently housed together. However there has never been a systematic study of the reproductive consequences of co-housing females. This study was conducted for three purposes, to: (1) corroborate the presence of induced ovulation, (2) determine whether elevated cortisol is implicated in neonatal pup mortality, and (3) evaluate the endocrine correlates of group housed females. Using fecal hormone monitoring for estrogen, progesterone, and cortisol, 43 cycles from 33 female maned wolves were studied from 2002 to 2015. Females were categorized by their reproductive status: pregnant and successfully raised pups (PR; n = 11), pregnant with neonatal pup demise within 3 days (PL; n = 7), housed with a male but no signs of breeding or pregnancy (PP; n = 10), housed singly (S; n = 8), or housed with related females (F; n = 7). Estrogen and progestagen remained at baseline for all females not housed with a male (S, F), while elevations consistent with ovulation were seen in females housed with a male (PP, PL, PR). Compared to PR females, PL individuals showed similar cortisol levels throughout the cycle and slightly lower progesterone levels during gestation. As for the effect of co-housing related females, F females showed estrogen and progesterone levels lower even than S females while cortisol levels were elevated compared to all other groups. These findings support the previous evidence of induced ovulation in the maned wolf. Although elevated cortisol does not seem to be implicated in pup loss, a non-significant trend towards lower progesterone during gestation could be implicated. Future studies should assess depressed progesterone levels as a correlate to neonatal pup mortality. Female maned wolves housed with related females experience suppressed reproductive hormones and elevated adrenal hormones. Therefore, a more systematic study of hormonal and behavioral correlates to co-housing with related females is warranted.

RESUMO

This study aimed to assess joint angle values in the forelimbs and hind limbs of crab-eating foxes ( Cerdocyon thous) using a conventional manual goniometer. Nine captive crab-eating foxes, aged over 1 yr old, weighing from 5.9 to 7.5 kg were used. The maximum flexion and maximum extension of the shoulder, elbow, carpal, hip, stifle, and tarsal joints were measured. The range of motion was determined through the difference between the maximum flexion and the maximum extension. There was no significant difference between the right and left sides in the goniometric measurements. The mean values of the range of motion for shoulder, elbow, carpal, hip, stifle, and tarsal joints were respectively 108°, 99°, 131°, 79°, 103°, and 86°. The goniometric values of the crab-eating foxes can be used as means of comparison with other animals from the same species for diagnostic purposes, research documentation, and evaluation of therapeutic procedures.

RESUMO

A captive 12-year-old female maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus), previously diagnosed with visceral leishmaniasis, developed severe myiasis in the right ear, followed by prostration and death. A firm solid nodule, measuring 1 x 3cm, was grossly observed in the pancreas. Histologically, there was neoplastic proliferation in the pancreas and pancreatic lymph node. Neoplastic cells had a neuroendocrine pattern, and were positive for gastrin and pancreatic polypeptide by immunohistochemistry. The wolf had also ulcerative gastritis. To the best of our knowledge is the first reported case gastrinoma in this species.(AU)

This study describes the osteology and radiology of the pelvic limb in maned wolves. Ten (five live and five dead) maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus), five males and five females, aged from 2 to 7 years old were used. Digital radiographs were taken and recorded for both pelvic limbs in all animals. Osteology was correlated with the radiographic images. The pelvis had a rectangular shape, and the obturator foramen (foramen obturatum) was oval. The femoral neck (collum femoris) was short and thick. The greater trochanter (trochanter major) extended proximally to near the dorsum of the femoral head (caput ossis femoris). The lateral femoral condyle (condylus lateralis) was larger than the medial condyle (condylus medialis), and the intercondylar fossa (fossa intercondylaris) had a slightly oblique orientation. The proximal tibia displayed medial and lateral condyles with the medial larger. The femur was slightly shorter than the tibia. Seven tarsal bones (ossa tarsi) were present, four long metatarsal bones (ossa metatarsalia II - V) and a short first metatarsal bone (os metatarsal I).

The objective of this study was to compare two methods of hormone concentration assessment(chemiluminescence and radioimmunoassay) in lyophilized fecal extracts from bush dogs (Speothos venaticus) toverify which gives more accurate in results. One hundred and sixty-six fecal samples from two females (femaleA, n = 80 and female B, n = 86) at Ilha Solteira Zoo – SP, were collected from March through December 2005.Samples were lyophilized before fecal metabolite hormonal extraction. Estradiol and progesteroneconcentrations were assessed using commercially available kits for human hormone analyses. Both methodsresults were compared by (test statistics). According to Pearson and Tukey tests, the methods had comparableresults (P > 0,05). There was no significant difference between methods, showing the non-invasive monitoring offecal metabolite hormonal contribued to the determination of metabolites concentrations for each female in thisstudy. It demonstrates the suitability and similarity of chemiluminescence and radioimmunoassay forquantification of estradiol and progesterone fecal metabolites in Speothos venaticus species.

According to Pearson and Tukey tests, the methods had comparableresults (P > 0,05). There was no significant difference between methods, showing the non-invasive monitoring offecal metabolite hormonal contribued to the determination of metabolites concentrations for each female in thisstudy. It demonstrates the suitability and similarity of chemiluminescence and radioimmunoassay forquantification of estradiol and progesterone fecal metabolites in Speothos venaticus species.(AU)

The aim of this study was to describe the topography of the lumbar intumescence and medullary conus in the spinal cord of thepampas fox (Lycalopex gymnocercus), in order to establish anatomical basis for epidural anesthesia procedures in this species,as well as to give data for neuroanatomical comparative studies in animals. For this purpose, five specimens, four males andone female, collected dead from road kills at the southwest region of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, were embalmed and conservedin formaldehyde solution. Macrodissections and digital radiographs revealed that lumbar intumescence has an average lengthof 31.40 ± 5,09 mm, lies over L4 and L5 vertebrae and appears relatively shorter in comparison to other carnivore species. Themedullary conus has an elongated dimension which seemed to be typical for smaller canids and an average length of 68.28 ± 8,36mm. Its skeletopy exhibited a basis over L5 and an apices over S3 vertebrae in four specimens; in one individual the basis wasover L6 and the apices over Cd1. The findings suggest that needle puncture for epidural anesthesia in Lycalopex gymnocercus issafer if done at the sacrocaudal space.(AU)

RESUMO

In this study we measured excreted fecal corticoid metabolites (FCM) in maned wolves (Chrysocyon brachyurus) living within a protected reserve, on farmlands or in a boundary zone between the two habitats, and determined the impacts of season and reproductive status on adrenal activity. Feces were collected within a national park (n=191 samples), a park boundary zone (n=39) and on nearby farmlands (n=27), processed and analyzed by enzyme immunoassay. FCM amounts from samples collected on farmlands were higher (P<0.05) than in those collected inside the reserve and from the boundary zone. In relation to seasonality, FCM were elevated (P<0.05) in spring (September-November) when wolf pairs were raising young. We then divided the samples collected during breeding season (March-August) into cycling females and male/non-cycling females based on fecal progesterone: fecal testosterone ratio. FCM concentrations of the former collected inside the park were higher than (P<0.05) than the latter group. However, there were no differences in FCM levels between the two groups for samples collected in the boundary zone and on farmlands. Furthermore, FCM concentrations of male/non-cycling females samples collected on farmlands were 2- to 5-fold higher (P<0.05) than in counterparts collected inside the park. The consistently high FCM concentrations in samples collected on farmlands indicate that, in addition to seasonality, gender and reproductive status, anthropogenic pressures also contribute to elevating adrenal steroid for individuals living in altered habitat.

RESUMO

The importance of studies with hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values of Crab-eating Fox (Cerdocyon thous) is based on the need for health care and maintenance of those populations. This paper has the objective to investigate hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary physiological parameters of the Crab-eating fox, comparing gender and age differences. Blood samples were collected in 2003 from 52 animals of different Zoos in São Paulo state, Brazil; 7mL of blood was used to obtain a complete blood cell count (CBC) and the profile of the serum biochemistry. Moreover, 5mL of urine were collected for analysis. There was no difference in values for male and female animals, as for the CBC and serum biochemistry. Some hematological and serum biochemical parameters were influenced by age, showing significant differences. Urinalysis results were just demonstrated in a descriptive form. The studied values were, RBC 4.35±0.73 x 10(6) /µL, WBC 7.72±3.66 x 10³ /µL (predominance of segmented neutrophils), platelets 227.06±111.58 x 10³ /µL, urea 43.06±14.28mg/dL and creatinine 1.03±0.24mg/dL. Hematological, serum biochemistry and urinary values obtained in this study can be used as physiological values of the captive Crab-eating Fox. It is possible to conclude that wild species need their own reference values, differentiating animals in captivity from free-ranging animals.
