Wetlands play a crucial role in providing valuable ecosystem services, including the removal of various pollutants. In agricultural basins, wetlands are exposed to agrochemical loads. This study aims to assess the attenuation effect of the ubiquitous macrophyte Azolla spp. on the toxicity of lambda-cyhalothrin to sensitive aquatic organisms. An indoor mesocosm experiment was conducted to compare the concentration of lambda-cyhalothrin at different time points after pesticide application in vegetated and unvegetated treatments, including a control without pesticide addition. Toxicity tests were performed throughout the experiment on three organisms: a fish (Cnesterodon decemmaculatus), a macroinvertebrate (Hyalella curvispina), and an amphibian (Boana pulchella). The results demonstrated that lambda-cyhalothrin concentration and toxicity in water were significantly lower in the Azolla spp. treatment. Furthermore, the half-life of lambda-cyhalothrin decreased from 1.2 days in the unvegetated treatment to 0.4 days in the vegetated treatment. The vegetated treatment also resulted in a significantly lower mortality rate for both H. curvispina and C. decemmaculatus. However, no mortality was observed in B. pulchella for any of the treatments. Sublethal effects were observed in this organism, such as lateral bending of the tail and impairment of the ability to swim, which were attenuated in the vegetated treatment. We conclude that Azolla spp. can effectively reduce the concentration and toxicity of lambda-cyhalothrin, suggesting its potential use in farm-scale best management practices to mitigate the effects of pesticide loads from adjacent crops.

Sperm quality is defined as the sperm cell ability to successfully fertilize eggs and allow normal embryo development⁠. Few studies explore sperm quality using aquatic invertebrates. Parhyale hawaiensis is a marine amphipod with a circumtropical distribution and considered a model for evolution, development, and ecotoxicological studies. We aimed to develop a methodology to collect sperm cells of P. hawaiensis and evaluate their viability and DNA damage (comet assay). We directly exposed the sperm cells to different mutagenic agents to optimize/develop the protocols. Then, as a proof of concept, we exposed the males to mutagenic compounds (EMS, benzo[a]pyrene (BaP), azo and anthraquinone dyes) at non-lethal concentrations verified by the proposed viability test and analyzed their sperm cells for DNA damage (comet assay). Organisms exposed to EMS presented a clear concentration response in the DNA damage response. We also showed that BaP was able to induce a statistically significant increase in DNA damage of the sperm cells. For the two dyes, although DNA damage increased, statistically differences were not observed. We believe we successfully developed a test to detect genotoxicity of chemicals in sperm cells using an invertebrate model. The protocol for sperm cell viability needs to be further explored with different chemicals to verify its utility as a toxicity endpoint. The developed genotoxicity test has the advantages to employ organisms that are easily cultivated in reduced space, use simple laboratory resources and reduced amount of material and reagents. Positive responses with this model could be used to disclose new germ cell mutagen candidates which could be further confirmed in vertebrates' systems.

We investigated the distribution and effects of waterborne microplastic (MP) (polyethylene microspheres, 53-63 um) on the emergent model for ecotoxicology, the amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis, during 30 days of exposure. The following life-history traits were measured: (1) survival, (2) specific growth rate (SGR), (3) reproductive performance (precopulatory pairing behavior, fecundity, and time to release neonates), (4) molting frequency, (5) F1 newborn offspring survival and (6) MP bioaccumulation. No significant mortality or molt was seen in any of the treatments. MP caused a reduction in SGR, being more pronounced in females. The time for precopulatory pairing was 3-fold longer in amphipods exposed to MP. Fecundity decreased by 50 %, and the time to release juveniles was 6.7 days longer for amphipods exposed to MP. Finally, neonate survival decreased by 80 % after ten days of release. MP disrupts the reproductive mechanisms and triggers adverse effects on life history traits in P. hawaiensis.

N-(1,3-dimethylbutyl)-N'-phenyl-p-phenylenediamine-quinone (6PPD-quinone), an oxidation product of the tire additive, 6PPD, has been associated with high mortality of salmonids (0.1 µg/L). The objective of this study was to determine the acute toxicity using neonates and mutagenicity (micronuclei in hemolymph of exposed adults) of 6PPD-quinone in the marine amphipod Parhyale hawaiensis. Also, we studied its mutagenicity in the Salmonella/microsome assay using five strains of Salmonella with and without metabolic system (rat liver S9, 5%). 6PPD-quinone did not present acute toxicity to P. hawaiensis from 31.25 to 500 µg/L. Micronuclei frequency increased after 96 h-exposure to 6PPD-quinone (250 and 500 µg/L) when compared to the negative control. 6PPD-quinone also showed a weak mutagenic effect for TA100 only in the presence of S9. We conclude that 6PPD-quinone is mutagenic to P. hawaiensis and weakly mutagenic to bacteria. Our work provides information for future risk assessment of the presence of 6PPD-quinone in the aquatic environment.

Arsenic (As) is a toxic metalloid present in high levels in diverse regions of Argentina. The aim of this study was to determine acute As-mediated toxicity in two different populations of autochthonous Hyalella curvispina amphipods from a reference site (LB) and an agricultural one (FO) within North Patagonia Argentina. Previously, both populations exhibited significant differences in pesticide susceptibility. Lab assays were performed to determine acute lethal concentrations, as well as some biochemical parameters. Lethal concentration (LC50) values obtained after 48 and 96 hr As exposure were not significantly different between these populations, although FO amphipods appeared slightly less susceptible. LC50-48 hr values were 3.33 and 3.92 mg/L As, while LC50-96 hr values were 1.76 and 2.14 mg/L As for LB and FO amphipods. The no observed effect concentration (NOEC) values were 0.5 mg/L As. Cholinesterase (ChE) activity was significantly diminished by As acute exposure (0.5-1.5 mg/L As), indicative of a significant neurotoxic action for this metalloid in both amphipod populations. Activities of catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) and levels of reduced glutathione (GSH) were differentially altered following As exposure. CAT activity was increased after 96 hr As exposure. GST activity and GSH levels were significantly elevated followed by either a decrease or a return to control values after 96 hr treatment. However, additional studies are necessary to understand the mechanisms underlying the As-mediated oxidative effects in H. curvispina. Our findings suggest that measurement of ChE activity in H. curvispina amphipods might serve as a useful biomarker of As exposure and effect.

Sperm quantity/quality are significant reproductive endpoints with clear links to population level dynamics. Amphipods are important model organisms in environmental toxicology. Despite this, field monitoring of male fertility in invertebrates has rarely been used in monitoring programs. The aim of this study was to compare sperm quality/quantity in an amphipod collected at six UK locations with differing water quality. Due to low sperm counts and an observed lack of relationship between sperm count and weight in amphipods collected from a nationally protected conservation area (Langstone Harbour, England), we also compared datasets from this site over a decade to determine the temporal significance of this finding. One collection to evaluate a female reproductive endpoint was also performed at this site. Interestingly, this harbour consistently presented some of the lowest sperm counts comparable to highly industrial sites and low eggs number from females. Amphipods collected from all the sites, except from Langstone Harbour, presented strong positive correlations between sperm count and weight. Given Langstone Harbour has several international and national protected statutes primarily for marine life and birds, our results indicate that E. marinus, one important food component for wading birds, might be impacted by unknown reproductive stressors. These unknown stressors maybe related to agricultural runoff, leachate from historical landfills and effluent from storm water overflows. This study highlights the importance of exploring new reproductive endpoints such as sperm quantity/quality in marine monitoring programs.

Sugarcane crops management in Brazil includes the use of pesticides, as well as alternative organic fertilizers such as vinasse obtained from waste of the ethanol industry. In order to assess the effects of the environmental contamination generated by such sugarcane practices, this study was aimed to investigate the effects of the pesticides 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and fipronil, as well as vinasse, on the survival, behavior, and reproduction of the native epibenthic macroinvertebrate Hyalella meinerti through in situ and laboratory experiments. In situ assays were conducted in mesocosms with six treatments, i.e. untreated control, 2,4-D, fipronil, and vinasse, the mixture of the two pesticides, and both pesticides mixed with vinasse. Survival, swimming behavior, and reproduction were evaluated over time post contamination, from 0-96 h (T1) and 7-14 days (T2) through in situ experiments and 30-44 days (T3) and 75-89 days (T4) post contamination by laboratory bioassays with mesocosm water. In the T1 period, survival of H. meinerti was registered only in controls and mesocosms treated with 2,4-D. In the T2 period, treatments containing fipronil and vinasse (isolated or in both mixture treatments) still caused 100 % of mortality. Survival was recorded only in 2,4-D and control treatments, whereas reproduction only occurred in the control. In the T3 period, no survival occurred to fipronil and both mixture treatments. Vinasse and 2,4-D decreased total reproduction in comparison to control. In the T4 period, amphipods survival was detected when exposed to fipronil and its mixture with 2,4-D. However, these same treatments decreased the amplexus rates and total reproduction, with synergism denoted for the pesticide mixture. The swimming activity of males, females, and couples was decreased in surviving organisms exposed to 2,4-D, fipronil, vinasse, and the mixture of pesticides along all experimental periods. Our study showed that the application of fipronil, 2,4-D, and vinasse isolated or mixed at realistic concentrations of actual sugarcane management practices may negatively impact functional responses of indigenous amphipods in natural aquatic systems.

Modern nano-engineered pesticides have great promise for agriculture due to their extended, low dose release profiles that are intended to increase effectiveness but reduce environmental harm. Whether nanopesticides, including copper (Cu) formulations, cause reduced levels of toxicity to non-target aquatic organisms is unclear but important to assess. Predicting how aquatic species respond to incidental exposure to Cu-based nanopesticides is challenging because of the expected very low concentrations in the environment, and the two forms of exposure that may occur, namely to Cu ions and Cu nanoparticles. We conducted Cu speciation, tissue uptake, and 7-day toxicity laboratory experiments to test how a model estuarine organism, the amphipod Leptocheirus plumulosus, responded to two popular Cu-based nanopesticides, CuPRO and Kocide, and conventional CuCl2. Exposure concentrations ranged from 0 to 2.5 ppm, which were similar to those found in estuarine water located downstream of agricultural fields. Cu dissolution rates were much slower for the nanopesticides than the ionic formula, and Cu body burden in amphipods increased approximately linearly with the nominal exposure concentration. Amphipod survival declined in a normal dose-response manner with no difference among Cu formulations. Growth and movement rates after 7 days revealed no difference among exposure levels when analyzed with conventional statistical methods. By contrast, analysis of respiration rates, inferred from biomass measurements, with a bioenergetic toxicodynamic model indicated potential for population-level effects of exposure to very low-levels of the two nanopesticides, as well as the control contaminant CuCl2. Our results indicate that toxicity assessment of environmental trace pollutant concentrations may go undetected with traditional ecotoxicological tests. We present a process integrating toxicity test results and toxicodynamic modeling that can improve our capacity to detect and predict environmental impacts of very low levels of nanomaterials released into the environment.

Pollution by microplastics has become a global threat affecting coastal habitats such as sandy beaches and their resident macrofauna. The goal of this study was to assess the influence of microplastics on the feeding behavior and growth rate of a widespread sandy beach amphipod, Orchestoidea tuberculata. These organisms were exposed to artificial food prepared with Poly(styrene-co-divinylbenzene) microspheres (8 µm particle size) at 3 different concentrations (0%, 5% and 10%). The amphipods consumed significantly more food when the concentration of microplastics was 0% and significantly less when the concentration was 10%, both in trials in which they had a choice (preference experiments) and those in which they did not have a food choice. In contrast to this, the amphipod's absorption efficiency and estimated growth rates were not significantly affected by the concentration of microplastics. Combined, these results indicate that high microplastics concentrations (e.g. 10%) cause a reduction in the amphipod's consumption rates and, indirectly, may affect the role of this species as a main consumer of stranded seaweeds in sandy beaches ecosystems.

The brown alga Sargassum furcatum and three families of amphipods (Ampithoidae, Caprellidae and Hyalidae) associated to that algae were evaluated as bioindicators of petroleum hydrocarbons input into the marine environment of São Sebastião Channel, in southeastern region of Brazil. The n-alkanes pattern were mainly associated with the natural composition of the macroalgae and amphipods, although some indicatives of petroleum hydrocarbons such as unresolved complex mixture and the no predominance of odd over even n-alkanes have been observed in some samples. Total PAHs ranged from 33.4 to 2010 ng g-1 dry weight with the predominance of low molecular weight PAHs, mostly of naphthalene and alkyl-naphthalenes, which also suggested petroleum input. Even in low concentration, Sargassum furcatum and amphipods species studied seems to be good indicators of the introduction of petroleum hydrocarbons.

The Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (RFL - Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil) is a highly polluted and eutrophic lacustrine system, which has been often used for the practice of aquatic sports, including during the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. This study proposes the evaluation of metal concentrations in surface sediments from the RFL before and after urban interventions performed for the 2016 Olympics, as well as their toxicity to the benthic amphipod Tiburonella viscana and embryos of the sea-urchin Echinometra lucunter. Metal concentrations determined in 2017 were significantly higher than those obtained in 2015 (especially Cu, Cd and Ni), suggesting that the interventions performed to fulfill the requirements of the Olympics increased metal contents in sediments. The sediments from the northern sector of the RFL were muddier, more organically enriched, exhibited higher metal concentrations and were more toxic to T. viscana when compared to the sediments collected in the southern sector. This fact is particularly important since the practice of sports, including during the 2016 Olympics, has been preferably performed in the northern sector. Metal distribution was strongly correlated with organic matter and mud contents. The toxicity to E. lucunter embryos was high for both northern and southern sediments; most of the samples led to 100% lack or abnormal embryonic development. The integration of physical, chemical and ecotoxicological data indicates that the mortality to T. viscana was correlated with metal contents, whereas the toxicity to E. lucunter was apparently related to the release of ammonia from the sediment to water column. Finally, high metal concentrations and the toxicity to aquatic organisms evidence the ecological risks to the biota from RFL.

Sublethal effects of water-accommodated fraction (WAF) from crude oil of Neuquén basin, Northern Patagonia-Argentina, were examined on both antioxidant and detoxification system of Hyalella curvispina adults collected in Los Barreales (LB) lake and in an oil-polluted stream (DS). The effects of WAF exposure during 6, 24 and 48 h were evaluated in the glutathione content (GSH) and glutathione S-transferase (GST), catalase (CAT) and cytochrome P450 (CYP450) activities. Populations from DS and LB showed not only different basal GSH content and enzyme activities but also different behavior to WAF exposure. LB population exposed to WAF showed a significant increase in GSH content, CAT and CYP450 activities, compared to control group. DS population presented high basal levels in CAT and CYP activity compared with LB population, but their response to WAF exposure was minor. Amphipods from DS, chronically exposed to hydrocarbons, were adapted to their environment.

Billings Complex is the largest water-storage reservoir in São Paulo, Brazil, and has been contaminated since the 1960s. Periodically, Billings sediments are subjected to currents causing resuspension and subsequent release of metals. A short-term (4-h) resuspension was simulated using sediment flux exposure chambers (SeFECs) to better understand the fate, bioavailability, and transport of iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn) during these events, as well as possible organism toxicity. Daphnia magna and Hyalella azteca were exposed during the 4-h resuspension, and were monitored after exposure for survival, growth, and reproduction. Resuspension rapidly deoxygenated the overlying water, decreased the pH, and resulted in elevated dissolved Zn above the US Environmental Protection Agency's (2002) criteria for acute toxicity (120 µg L-1 ). However, Zn was scavenged (after 20 h) from solution as new sorption sites formed. Dissolved Mn increased during and after resuspension, with maximum values at 20 h post exposure. An initial release of Fe occurred, likely associated with oxidation of acid-volatile sulfides, but decreased after 1 h of resuspension. The Fe decrease is likely due to precipitation as oxyhydroxides. No acute toxicity was observed during resuspension; however, mortality of D. magna and H. azteca occurred during the postexposure period. Daphnia magna also exhibited chronic toxicity, with decreased neonate production after exposure. This study aimed to evaluate the sediment quality in a Ramsar site located in the Southeast Brazil, by using several lines of evidence (LOEs). Chemical and sedimentological analyses, ecotoxicological tests, and whole-sediment Toxicity Identification Evaluation (TIE) were performed. The sediments were predominantly composed of fine sands and muds. Higher concentrations of metals in the sediments collected close to Iguape were observed; however according to the SEM/AVS analyses, most sediments should not be toxic and the potentially toxic samples could occur along the whole channel. In fact, sediments of most stations were toxic in at least one survey. The PCA revealed associations between mud, metals and toxicity. Acutely toxic sediments presented Pb concentrations above the threshold effect levels, while chronic toxicity seemed to be influenced also by SEM. The most contaminated and toxic areas are not necessarily those located close to the primary sources, but are actually those with finer sediments. Toxicity Identification and Evaluation (TIE) showed that metals and ammonia were responsible for the toxicity. The results suggest that metals from former mining areas located at the upper Ribeira de Iguape River are transported to the Cananéia Iguape Peruíbe Protected Area and accumulate in the sediments at potentially toxic levels. The location of muddy and more contaminated sediments appears to move along the estuary, accompanying the displacement of the maximum turbidity zone, which, in turn, depends on seasonal freshwater inputs. The results also showed that using several lines of evidences to asses contamination in a protected area provides reliable information to subsidise further actions to control the sources of contaminants.

On release into surface waters, engineered silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) tend to settle to sediments and, consequently, epibenthic fauna will be exposed to them through diet. We established Ag uptake and accumulation profiles over time in the hemolymph of a marine amphipod fed with a formulated feed containing AgNPs or AgCl. Silver bioavailability was higher in organisms exposed to AgNPs, indicating that the nanoparticles pose a higher risk of toxicity compared to similar concentrations of AgCl. Chemical and toxicological crude oil analysis was performed on water-accommodated fraction of oil (WAF). This study characterized the chemical composition of WAF and its dissipation over a period of 192 h. Acute (96 h) and chronic (14 d) toxicity of WAF were evaluated on Hyalella curvispina from both reference (Los Barreales lake, LB) and hydrocarbon-contaminated (Durán stream, DS) sites. The total hydrocarbon (TPHs) concentration in WAF was 2.18 mg L-1. The dissipation rates of hydrocarbons in WAF showed a first-order kinetics, with half-lives ranging between 65 h-200 h. Amphipods from LB showed acute and chronic LC50 values of 0.33 and 0.018 mg L-1, respectively. Amphipods from DS exposed to pure WAF showed no mortality in either acute or chronic assays. Further biochemical and molecular research is required to determine the mechanisms underlying the resistance to WAF exposure on DS amphipods.

Two anthelmintic macrocyclic lactones-ivermectin and moxidectin-have revolutionized parasite control in cattle. These drugs are only partly metabolized by livestock, and the main route of excretion is via feces. In seasonally inundated floodplains, cattle feces come into direct contact with surface water. Important differences in pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics between these drugs may bear on their ecotoxicology in aquatic ecosystems. Moxidectin strongly binds to organic matter and thereby may be consumed in aquatic food webs, but there is a scarcity of data on toxicity to freshwater invertebrates. The objectives of this work were to determine the effect of moxidectin spiked in cattle dung on survival and growth of three representative aquatic invertebrates: the zooplankton Ceriodaphnia dubia, the amphipod Hyalella curvispina, and the snail Pomacea canaliculata. Moxidectin-laced dung was added in microcosms and concentrations were measured in water, sediment + dung, roots of the aquatic plant Salvinia biloba, and the aforementioned invertebrates. The influence of moxidectin on nutrient concentrations was also evaluated. Dung was spiked with moxidectin to attain concentrations of 750, 375 and 250 µg kg-1 dung fresh weight, approximating those found in cattle dung at days 2, 3, and 5 following subcutaneous injection. Concentrations of moxidectin in dung during the first week of excretion were lethally toxic for the tested invertebrate taxa. The persistence of moxidectin in the sediment + dung and the uptake of the drug in roots of S. biloba increase its potential exposure to aquatic food webs. Moxidectin also reduced the rate of release of soluble reactive phosphorus to the water.

During the last years, a carbaryl insecticide was extensively applied in the valley of Río Negro and Neuquén, North Patagonia Argentina, to manage codling moths (Cydia pomonella), the main pest of pear and apple trees. In this study carbaryl susceptibility and B-esterase activity from both insecticide-exposed and non-exposed field populations of amphipods Hyalella curvispina were studied. Two subpopulations, one susceptible to carbaryl (LC50=213±7.5µg/L carbaryl) and one resistant to it (LC50=14,663±2379µg/L carbaryl), were found in the agricultural area selected in this study. Both populations were, in turn, more resistant to carbaryl than the population from a pristine area (LC50=11.31±2.27µg/L carbaryl). The in vivo 48h-IC50 values for cholinesterase (ChE) were close to the corresponding 48h-LC50 values as determined for the non-exposed population (IC50=7.16±0.86µg/L carbaryl) and for the susceptible subpopulation from the insecticide-exposed site (IC50=193±99µg/L carbaryl). Carbaryl exposure of the amphipods from the agricultural area mentioned above produced a significant decrease of carboxylesterase (CabE) activity, at a sublethal concentration (10µg/L) that was not able to significantly inhibit ChE, thereby showing a protective role of CabE and its usefulness as early biomarker. However, at lethal concentrations the inhibition of ChE activity was higher than that of CabE. On the other hand, CabE of amphipods from the pristine site was less sensitive to carbaryl than ChE, suggesting a different participation of CabE in ChE protection in the susceptible population of H. curvispina. Pulse exposure to carbaryl for 2h caused a significant inhibition of ChE in amphipods from both populations, with a fast recovery as expected for a carbamate insecticide. In conclusion, we proved that amphipods from the said agricultural area have developed resistance to carbaryl and showed the presence of two subpopulations with a different response to the insecticide. Moreover, these results reinforce the use of ChE together with CabE inhibition as indicators of carbamate exposure in H. curvispina.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the biological hazard of a pharmaceutical effluent before and after treatment. For the former, the determined 96h-LC50 value was 1.2%. The photo-Fenton treatment catalyzed with an iron-pillared clay reduced this parameter by 341.7%. Statistically significant increases with respect to the control group (P<0.05) were observed at 12, 24, 48 and 72h in HPC (50.2, 30.4, 66.9 and 43.3%), LPX (22, 83.2, 62.7 and 59.5%) and PCC (14.6, 23.6, 24.4 and 25.6%) and antioxidant enzymes SOD (29.4, 38.5, 32.7 and 49.5%) and CAT (48.4, 50.3, 38.8 and 46.1%) in Hyalella azteca before treatment. Also increases in damage index were observed before treatment of 53.1, 59.9, 66.6 and 72.1% at 12, 24, 48 and 72h, respectively. After treatment the same biomarkers of oxidative stress decreased with respect to before treatment being to HPC (29.3, 22.5, 41.6 and 31.7%); LPX (14.2, 43.1, 30.7 and 35.5%); PCC (12.6, 21.3, 24.2 and 23.9%); SOD (39.2, 33.9, 49.5 and 37.9%) and CAT (28.6, 35.8, 33.7 and 31.7) at 12, 24, 48 and 72h, respectively (P<0.05). The damage index were decreased at 12, 24, 48 and 72h in 48.9, 57.8, 67.3 and 72.1%, respectively. In conclusion, the obtained results demonstrate the need of performing bioassays in order to characterize an effluent before discharge and not base such a decision only upon current normativity. In addition, it was also concluded that the heterogeneous photo-Fenton process decreases the presence of PCT, oxidative stress, genotoxic damage and LC50 in Hyalella azteca.

The utility of early effect endpoints as biomarkers of ecotoxicity of natural sediments in water-sediment static system was investigated. The particular goal was to evaluate the ecotoxicity of the sediment samples from La Choza stream, located in upper basin of the Reconquista river, the second most polluted river of Argentina. Native juveniles Hyalella curvispina were used as test organisms evaluating survival, growth, oxidative stress parameters (SOD; CAT, TBARS) and the electron transport system (ETS) activity as early toxic effect. This study used methodologies and techniques that allow the assessment of sediment pollution with a native species as test organism and provided data to discuss the viability of sublethal endpoints as tools for freshwater sediment assessment. In spring and in summer two ten-day series of whole-sediment assays were conducted simultaneously: (a) standard assays and (b) biomarkers assays. A control sediment was ran simultaneously in which no--effect on survival was measured. In summer there was a significant increase in length and biomass in both exposed and control groups. In spring an inhibitory effect on growth and an increase in oxidative damage with a concomitant rise in antioxidant defenses, was observed in animals exposed to La Choza sediment. ETS measurement indicated a significant depression of metabolic activity of amphipods exposed to contaminated sediments. The measured biomarkers represent the first record for juvenile H. curvispina exposed to polluted natural sediments under standardized laboratory conditions. The used bioanalytical tools demonstrated higher sensitivity and a more accurate assessment of the effects than those obtained by the standard tests of survival and growth. We propose their adoption in biomonitoring of freshwater sediment toxicity.
